Family Caregivers Of Veterans Eligible For Free Professional Help

(NAPSI)—The Elizabeth Dole Foundation and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have launched an emergency respite care fund for the family caregivers of wounded, ill, and injured veterans. The program, Respite Relief for Military and Veteran Caregivers, will provide non-medical, no-cost, professional home care to veteran caregivers who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. CareLinx, a nationwide professional home care network, helped launch the fund with a donation of $1 million worth of services.

Even as states re-open, some of the most critically wounded or ill veterans and their caregivers will have a long journey back to the pre-pandemic world. These veterans often have vulnerable immune systems that require their caregivers to take every precaution against exposure.

Veterans and their families can get help at home to make daily living easier.

By asking family and friends to keep their distance, they are losing a vital source of daily support.

Warrior Project then contributed an additional $1 million to expand the pro gram. The Foundation expects to pro vide 75,000 hours of care to more than 3,000 veteran caregivers.

Wounded Warrior Project then contributed an additional $1 million to expand the program. The Foundation expects to provide 75,000 hours of care to more than 3,000 veteran caregivers.

“The lack of affordable, convenient, professional respite care has always taken a significant toll on the emotional and physical well-being of veteran care givers,” said Steve Schwab, CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. “Now, due to the increased health risks and limita tions created by the pandemic, we are seeing a spike in the need for short-term relief.”

“We are grateful to CareLinx and Wounded Warrior Project for helping us respond to this urgent need,” Schwab continued. “We hope other organizations also step up, so we can ensure every veteran caregiver suffering during COVID-19 receives the help they need.”

The program is rolling out in select regions and will expand nationwide over time. Eligible caregivers can request services that include companionship, grocery shopping, cooking, mobility assistance, transportation, bathing, and other activities of daily living. AARP and Bob Woodruff Foundation have also joined as key collaborators for this effort to help spread the word to military and veteran caregivers.

Changes for VA Small Businesses

If you hope to set up a business as a service-disabled veteran-owned small business (SDVOSB) or a vet eran-owned small business (VOSB), your verification will no longer be done by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Instead, as of the beginning of 2023, the Small Business Administra tion (SBA) will be in charge.

No new applications will be accept ed after Oct. 24, 2022, for either verification or reverification, due to the transition to the Small Business Administration. If you currently have a business and wonder about your next steps, go to vetbiz.va.gov and click on “See frequently asked questions con cerning this change.”

The Vets First Verification Program, using the Center for Verification and Evaluation (CVE), will be your go-to for all types of assistance, includ ing working through the initial steps: Intake, Assessment, Federal Review and Decision.

The benefits are worth the trouble to become VA-verified, if only for the set asides that are at the heart of how the VA helps small businesses — com petition is limited, which helps veter ans compete for federal contracts. At least 3% of those contracts are held for service-disabled veterans who own their businesses.

To be a SDVOSB or VOSB, a busi ness must be owned 51% or more by a veteran who did not receive a bad con duct or dishonorable discharge, and be controlled on a daily basis by a veteran who has the managerial experience to run the business. In addition, the vet eran has to be the highest paid person in the company, working full time and holding the highest position in the company. To qualify as a servicedisabled business, the veteran must meet all of the above qualifications and also have a disability rating letter from the VA confirming a serviceconnected disability.

If you’re ready to start a busi ness, check out www.va.gov/osdbu/ verification/index.asp and scroll to the guides and forms.

If you’re still at the thinking stage and need direction and help in becoming an entrepreneur, go to www.va.gov/ OSDBU/entrepreneur/index.asp for information on finding financial back ing, growing your business or doing business with federal agencies and more.

Easy Buttermilk Mashed Sweet Potatoes

are

the best part of a meal, and

are among the

contenders. Here’s a very simple take on that old

The buttermilk provides a hint of tang and the herbs add bright ness, making this a versatile dish that offsets a heavy winter meal yet pairs perfectly with lighter springtime or summer fare. Plus, California sweetpotatoes are a nice change of pace from regu lar mashed potatoes—and with more fiber.

While the kidnappings of Jan Broberg have been covered in the media before (a Netflix documentary titled “Abducted in Plain Sight” was a hot topic when it was released in 2017), Peacock has decided to adapt the true story into a miniseries starring Jake Lacy and Anna Paquin. Lacy portrays the perpetrator, Robert Berchtold, who nosed his way into the Broberg family with the intent of developing intimate relationships with not only the Broberg parents, but the children as well — spe cifically Jan, who was kidnapped by him two separate times in 1974 and in 1976. The series has been praised for its focus on the victims, rather than the abuser, which is no doubt influenced by Jan Broberg herself serving as exec utive producer for the show. Out now. (Peacock)

“Luckiest Girl Alive” (R) — Before Ani Fanelli was a 30-year-old hotshot writer living in New York, awaiting a grandiose wedding to the love of her life, she was a young girl named Tifani, who was just trying to find a place for herself in the world. Her first taste of luxury only came after she received a scholarship to a prestigious private school, the turning point that would alter the course of her life. The dark events that took place at the school would come to follow and haunt her to the current day, and until she turns around to face her trauma in the eye, Tifani cannot truly become Ani. Mila Kunis plays the (un)luck iest girl alive in this mystery thriller film out now. (Netflix)

Little does she know that as she accepts an invitation into his home, he has pulled her into a violent, deadly game of cat and mouse. Twenty years after running away from her home, an advertising executive named Laura reaches rock bottom in her struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. Upon receiving a call from her mother after Laura mysteriously survives an overdose, she decides to pay her first visit back to her mother. ROGERS

FOR RHODE ISLAND SENATE DISTRICT 21

Proud Foster Resident for over 50 years

I understand the struggles of our rural communities. I have spent the past 4 years at the State House fighting for our municipalities which often are an afterthought when it comes to State spending AFTER our Government funds Providence and surrounding urban communities.

As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I have been the leading voice to protect our SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS and the ongoing fight for the people who serve and protect our communities.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Agriculture, I have fought against the burdensome and radical goals of the Act on Climate/Green New Deal while simultaneously protecting our environment and our natural resourees.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Municipal Government, I engaged in the ongoing battle against the effort for developers to create preferential tax treatment for all renewable energy projects which were taxed lower than our other revenue generating commercial operations.

(NAPS)—Remodeling a kitchen can be a great idea— for most families it is the heart of the home and mostused room—and it can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these four suggestions.

Helpful Hints

1. Cabinet “magic”: Instead of going through the trouble and expense of installing new, custom cabinets, give your current ones a coat of paint, new pulls and knobs or perhaps new doors.

2. Light up your life: It can be a bright idea to improve the lighting. Make sure overhead lighting is concentrated in those areas where you work the most, such as over the stove and sink. Under-cabinet lighting can also be a good idea.

3. Be sink smart: You needn’t change every appliance if they’re working well but one thing that can give any kitchen a new look is to

change the sink, the mostused appliance. For example, BLANCO sinks save space on the counter and make everyday cleaning and prepping easy. Those made of SILGRANIT are impervious to scratches, chips and stains while the company’s newest stainless material, DURINOX, resists fingerprints and scratches. If you can, keep the plumbing in the same place it is now, to save time, trouble and money.

4. Clever, convenient accessories: A few little things can make a big difference. Sink accessories add functionality while letting you create your own personalized workstation. Custom stainless grids and elegant drain covers and strainers can make prep work more pleasing, cleanup less complicated, and entertaining an event reserved for graciously accepting compliments.

As one kitchen designer put

it: “Most clients are particular about aesthetics, but all clients insist on functionality. People want spaces that convey their personality, but most of all want their kitchen to make their lives easier.”

In response, Blanco came up with grids that float inside the sink to dry dishes, elevate pots or wash vegetables; colanders and cutting boards that can sit on top of the sink or on a specially engineered ledge to save counter space and make prep work a dream. You have to set the colander inside the sink anyway, while using the cutting board in the sink is a sneaky way to get in more counter space and make the job of prepping easier, too.

Myth #3: My family will take care of me.

In 2018, nursing home costs averaged more than $91,000 a year nationally.2 The majority of Americans would quickly deplete their retirement savings if they needed care for an extended peri od of time. Even if you can afford to cover long-term care services out-of-pocket, consider the bene fits of sharing the risk and costs using a long-term care planning solution such as insurance.

Myth #3: My family will take care of me.

The financial, physical, and emotional stress that full-time caregiving may place on families can be overwhelming. Sometimes the best way to take care of a loved one needing longterm care is to ensure they have access to professional care. With advances in home care services, many people needing long-term care are actually able to stay at home, with or near family, and still receive the professional care they need.

Myth #4: I can pay for my longterm care out-of-pocket.

and your loved ones, certain mis conceptions may prevent you from taking action.

So—let’s dispel these seven common long-term care myths:

Myth #1: I’ll never need longterm care

Generally, it is best to plan for longterm care in your 40s or 50s when you are younger and more likely to be healthier and insurable (underwriting is required). Also: premiums are generally lower when you are younger. Your insurability can change any time and a need for care can arise at any age, so purchasing coverage earlier can be a wise decision.

Myth #6: Long-term care coverage is just too expensive.

According to the U.S. Depart ment of Health and Human Ser vices, almost 70 percent of Amer icans turning 65 today will need some type of long-term care in their remaining years.1

Long-term care coverage options have evolved to meet most any need, with some options starting at $100$150 per month per person. Plans can be personalized to suit your budget and discounts may be available to partners and spouses. Even a small policy can help reduce the financial and emotional burden of a long-term care event and provide access to valuable benefits.

Myth #7: Long-term care policies only cover nursing homes.

Long-term care solutions may offer valuable benefits that allow you to stay in your home for as long as possible. Some even reimburse family members for providing care. Long-term care solutions can also help cover the cost of adult day care centers, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes as care needs evolve.

Some of these misconceptions may have prevented you or a loved one from creating a plan to address future longterm care needs. It’s important to take a step back, consider your financial plan and desired future care, and how you want to address it with you and your loved ones in mind.

Drivers who aren’t fond of taking their vehicles in for routine oil changes may want to consider electric vehicles the next time they’re in the market for a new car or truck. According to Kia, electric vehicles, or EVs, do not require oil. Oil is necessary to lubricate the various moving parts in combustion engines. While synthetic oil and other advancements have increased the recommended oil change intervals from the once-standard 3,000 mile recommendation, manufacturers still advise drivers to get oil changes around every 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.

No such maintenance is required with EVs because they consume batteries while running on electric motors. EV drivers will have to monitor certain fluids, though. Coolant is necessary to prevent batteries from overheating, and that can be periodically checked at drivers’ discretion and during routine maintenance performed at an auto body shop.

Drivers also can monitor and refill windshield washer fluid as necessary. Brake fluid in EV cars also needs to be replaced periodically, and Kia notes that its EVs need fresh brake fluid after running about 25,000 miles.

Reverse the TOP 6 mistakes of chronic back pain

ANTICIPATING PAIN

MISTAKE #1

NOT ADDRESSING THE ALARM

When you have pain, it is because your 5 senses are communicating a message to your brain and your brain perceives this as threatening. In short, pain is an alarm system, no different than the one for your car. And just like your car alarm, you can’t just let it go off for hours as it will not only effect you but it will start to effect others in your life. Pushing through activities and not addressing the alarm of pain will only make things worse.

Pro Tip: Pause and ask yourself if your alarm is going off because of something minor (e.g. you accidentally bumped your keys) and you can shake it off, or is this something you actually need to stop to address (e.g. a broken window)

MISTAKE #2

RELYING ON PASSSIVE TOOLS

While medications may help reduce your pain, that is all they’ll ever do. Pain medications do not address the root cause of your problem and force you into a cycle of dependence and endless prescription refills, which ultimately hurt your wallet as well as your confidence.

ProTip: Become an active player in your recovery by empowering yourself with self management tools that you can use throughout your day. Often breaking aggravating activities into smaller more manageable parts is a great first step.

Just like thinking of a happy memory can fill you with feelings of joy, your brain also stores memories of negative experiences. The more frequently an activity leads to pain or a negative experience, the more sensitive your body becomes to it. What happens with chronic pain is that your body starts to anticipate this pain before you even attempt to do the activity that has previously produced pain. The thought alone can produce a pain response and as a result you begin to anticipate it well in advance spiraling the experience in a way that may feel out of your control.

Pro Tip: Reframe the narrative of your prior experience by pausing your negative thoughts and talking yourself through how you’d ideally want that activity to go. Get into details with it to make it more real to you (e.g. how did it feel, who were you with, what did you do after? Then keep repeating this to yourself when you need to... after all, thoughts become things.

MISTAKE #4

KEEPING THE SAME ROUTINE

So let’s review, you have back pain and feel like it isn’t going anywhere. Now let’s think about your daily routine. If you are always doing the same things, and having the same pain experiences, then perhaps it is time to try something new. If you took a test and filled out the same answers each time, you wouldn’t expect a different grade each time.

Pro tip: Diversify your activities – get out there and try something new. Worst case scenario you learn that the activity didn’t help you. One the positive side, you’ve learned more about. What you can and will do to help yourself.

MISTAKE #5 ACCEPTANCE

Believing in the fallacy that you’ll have to live with this back pain for the rest of your life or that you’ll have to do xyz exercises for the rest of your life to prevent that pain. Your body is a biological system, it is constantly healing and reorganizing itself based on the demands you put on it. The only thing you should accept is your responsibility in your recovery.

AMAZON BEST SELLER

Pro Tip: Pain is a normal part of life.

You’ve had pain before in other parts of your body and eventually it went away. This too shall pass. Stop convincing yourself nothing can be done. Start focusing on positive elements of your life and what you want to achieve then come up with a plan to achieve it. It is a journey of small steps.

MISTAKE #6

NOT GETTING HELP

You don’t have to go it alone, nor should you. There is no shame in needing help and ultimately it will get rid of your chronic back pain faster. Physical therapists are medical professionals trained specifically to help you with this very issue. Developing a relationship with a specialist PT can often get you feeling on the right track.

Pro Tip: Go see a specialist physical therapist that treats 1-on-1 and specializes in the management of chronic low back pain.

You’ve reached the end of our list of the top 6 mistakes people make with chronic back pain and our pro-tips on how to reverse them, that you can start RIGHT NOW. Remember, it’s just the top 6 - so there are more and there’s a good chance you have already made them or currently are. But if you follow the pro-tips you’ll develop solid fundamentals toward reversing your back pain and improving your quality of life.

Men and women alike come to see the specialists at Arancia Physical Therapy for the treatment and abatement of chronic pain as well as for pelvic health care ~ all are welcome.

How do you know if you are at high risk of breast cancer?

Should you be worried about it?

Many people think they have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, or are “High Risk” because they have breast cancer in their family. We know that as much as 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer sometime in their lifetime, and that someone’s personal risk may be higher if they have certain cancers in their family. But it’s often hard to tell how high that risk is, or when it’s significant enough that they need help to prevent it (or at least catch it as early as possible when it’s most curable.)

Breast cancer risk has changed a lot over the years as we learn more about it. Historically, we would tell every woman to start getting mammograms at 40 regardless of their risk,

but that’s not always the case now. Now we have all kinds of ways to estimate a person’s individual breast cancer risk, and can predict how that might change over time as they age. Most people don’t necessarily have a higher than average risk of breast cancer even if they do have it in their family, but it can certainly be anxiety provoking just to have it on your mind.

At the Breast Health Centers at Kent and Women & Infants, we now have specialized High Risk Programs designed to evaluate each person’s risk of developing breast cancer. It starts with a simple mammogram, which also gives you and your doctor a preliminary estimate of your breast cancer risk, and lets you know if you might want to consider high risk screening and/or genetic testing for breast cancer-associated genes, like BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2 or

Staying Healthy

many others. If you and your doctor decide a more detailed evaluation is needed, we have a High Risk Clinic just for that! We narrow down the best most accurate estimate of your risk, explain what it means, and create a personalized plan to take advantage of the best ways to help prevent it.

What about young women in their 20s or early 30’s? It

What’s my breast cancer risk?

can be difficult to know when you need to start taking an interest in your breast health, and it’s different for every person. Many professional medical societies recommend undergoing a breast cancer risk assessment (or evaluation) when a woman reaches 25 years of age. Although this sounds early and scary, all it actually means is that you sit down with your doctor and ask about your family history and other personal medical history, to see if there’s any reason to consider earlier options. Most women will not need to do anything until they’re 40-50 years old, but it all depends on what their risk factors are! By doing this early, you can form a plan of when you need to start mammograms or anything else that might be needed. Women who are found to be at very high risk, or our BRCA-gene carriers like Angelina Jolie,

may want to start a screening or prevention program at 25.

What about male breast cancer? Although it’s rare, breast cancer can affect men as well. Especially if it runs in their family or there are other cancers that tend to run with them, such as ovarian, pancreatic or some prostate cancers.

Breast cancer affects 12-13% of the population. So almost all of us are affected by someone we know, if we haven’t been personally affected ourselves.

If you think you or someone you care about may need a closer look at their breast cancer risk, speak with your health care provider who can help you determine if you should be concerned. The good news is that there are many options available for prevention, early detection and for cures. We’re here to help.

Why posture is important

many biomechanical conditions and limitations.. The autonomic functions of our brain and nervous system such as general mood and our visceral state, can be affected by misalignments of the neck, improper posture and poor sleeping habits. Dysfunction of the vertebral muscles and joints can occur subtly, over a long period of time and in an injury or causative episode. Symptoms can range from general neck discomfort and headache to vertigo/ dizziness, loss of balance, inability to concentrate, pain, numbness and weakness into the extremity (shoulder/

arm). Best biomechanical function is achieved when the skull and spine are maintained in a neutral position when performing all activities, especially more relaxed activities and postures requiring long maintained positions, including phone use, sleep posture, driving posture or with lifting and carrying objects. Long periods of poor posture and improper repetitive movements result in bad biomechanics which trigger muscle and joint dysfunction. Proper posture with all activities is vital to preserving musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. L’Europa has mastered the techniques that preserve our spine health and would like to continue to

share with the public the importance of proper posture and biomechanics. Dr. L’Europa has been treating and educating Rhode Islanders for over 34 years. As a Doctor of Chiropractic and Physical Therapist as well as the owner and clinical director of Spinetech in Cranston, Dr. L’Europa is able to offer a unique and proven effective approach to addressing neuromusculoskeletal issues. With tens of thousands of patients seen, Spinetech best equipped to address conditions of the neck and back. We also offer a comprehensive physical therapy rehabilitation department. Including chiropractic adjustments, spinal

traction and decompression, massage therapy, Aquatic Therapy/Swimex, dry needling, myofascial release and much more. Spinetech is dedicated to patient satisfaction. Meet the welcoming staff and leave with peace of mind and body.

Dr. L’Europa says, “when using your cell phone: Look straight ahead with your head pulled back so that your ears are directly over your shoulders, then tuck your chin so that the upper teeth are parallel (level) to the floor. Raise the phone screen up to the level of your chin. Your eyes will fall comfortably 15 degrees off the horizontal plane looking at your screen. Do not drop your chin into the chest.”

(NAPSI)—Each year, the average American family of four loses $1,500 to uneaten food— that’s about 1,160 pounds of food. At holiday or any time, it’s a good idea to think about how you can keep household food waste in check.

Thanksgiving may be different this year, but we can still have a special celebration with a few adjustments, while, at the same time, reducing food waste. As the USDA Food Loss and Waste Liaison, I would like to share with you a few tips that can help reduce food waste at our holiday meals and save you money.

Plan Your Holiday Meal

Before you go to the grocery store or order online, make a list to ensure that you only buy what you need. Making a written list helps you avoid impulse purchases, which may include foods they don’t need. For turkey, one rule of thumb is to plan for one pound per person, or a pound and a half if you want leftovers. For smaller gatherings, consider preparing only the favorite family side dishes. If you want to prepare all of your family’s traditional dishes, consider cutting recipes in half. And coordinate in advance if you have guests who want to bring a dish.

You might also want serve one type of your favorite rolls or dessert instead of several.

Save Scraps

Freeze such scraps as vegetable peelings and meat trimmings for future culinary creations. Use them in savory broths and hearty soups. Season potato peelings and bake them into chips. Sauté extra chopped onions for recipe-ready caramelized onions.

Place food in clear containers marked with the contents and date to increase the chances the leftovers will be remembered and eaten. If you have guests who want leftovers, let them choose their favorite dishes so that their take-away food containers match what they will really enjoy.

Be Creative

You can make great breakfast fritters with leftover mashed potatoes. Extra rolls and bread going stale can become bread pudding. Try making homemade turkey stock with the bones, or turkey chili with leftover meat. Whip extra buttermilk or cream into French toast batter. You could even start a new family tradition of serving a pot of turkey soup on the weekend after Thanksgiving.

A great tool that you can use in your home to reduce food waste is the FoodKeeper App, which provides guidance on storage (e.g., in a refrigerator or freezer) for more than 650 food and beverage items and helps you track storage times for different foods. For example, for freshness and quality, rotisserie chicken should be consumed within three to four days when stored in refrigerator or within four months if stored frozen.

This app also provides guidance on safe handling and preparation with helpful cooking tips, such as how to thaw and roast a turkey by weight. FoodKeeper is available free as a mobile application for Android and Apple devices, or via desktop at FoodSafety.gov.

Donate

If you have extra cans of pumpkin pie filling, green beans, or cranberry sauce, consider donating them to a food bank to help those in need. To find a food bank nearby, visit the Feeding America website or EPA’s Excess Food Opportunities Map.

Compost

Composting your food scraps can help your garden grow. Learn how to get started with composting resources from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Or, look into community compost or compost opportunities. Make sure you toss only organics in the collection container and keep out produce stickers and noncompostable plastic bags, service ware, or utensils.

The report also indicated that 40 percent of those first-time campers identified as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Rising utility costs

Much like the cost of a loaf of bread or a carton of eggs now costs consumers considerably more than it did a couple of years ago, the price to heat and cool a home has risen consid erably. Various factors, from climate-related events to sup ply chain issues to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, have been

cited as contributors to the rise in utility costs, which is not just a North American problem. Fol lowing pandemic-induced lows in 2020, natural gas prices have risen consistently, even during off-peak months, over the last year-plus. The cost of natural gas that’s delivered through pipes was up 24 percent in February

from the year prior. Electricity has gone up as well. According to Choose Energy, an energy re porting resource, electricity rates have risen across the 50 states in 2022 by anywhere from 1.7 per cent over 2021 (Alaska) to 46.1 percent (Maine). The national average increase is 11.3 percent. CBS News reported in 2019 that Americans are paying up to 30 percent more on water and wastewater bills in less than a decade. Water and sewer bills are rising faster than inflation rates, having increased for an eighth consecutive year in a study of the country’s 50 largest metropoli tan regions. People concerned with the rising costs of utilities may have to be creative. Run ning appliances during off-peak hours; turning off lights and unplugging devices when not in use; investigating solar power; and investing in water-saving faucets, shower heads and toilets can help individuals curtail their energy consumption

2.Health: Veterinarians have been touting the perils of processed dog foods and treats for years. Feeding dogs subpar treats using rendered leftover meat waste, sugar, sodium, BHA, food coloring, and additives made in potentially filthy conditions or processing plants can contribute to lower life expectancy, allergies, certain cancers and unnecessary weight gain.

3.Taste: A treat should be just that: a TREAT and not an

hourly occurrence or something sub-par and not worth it. Consider high-value treats the ice cream of options. The “mouth feel” that jerky-style high protein treats provide, and the quality, healthful ingredients and thoughtful, transparent production, åpet (and owner) can see that high-value dog treats put the “eats” in treats

(NAPSI)—With flu season in full swing and bivalent COVID-19 booster shots widely available, now is the time to act and assess your options for receiving these vaccines. Protect yourself and your fam ily from these common illnesses this fall and winter by staying up to date with your vaccines and taking other proac tive measures to support your general health and immune system. As it takes up to two weeks for your body to build protection against the flu, experts recommend getting your flu shot as soon as possible.

Don’t hesitate to get co-administered vaccines

According to the Cen ters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you can get any of the currently authorized COVID-19 vaccines at the same time as the flu vaccine, so don’t hesi tate to get your shots si multaneously.

“There is no impact to the effectiveness of any of the COVID-19 vaccines if you also re ceive a flu vaccine, as they are designed to help individually tack le their respective vi ruses when exposed,” explained Sandra Leal, PharmD, MPH, FAPhA, Vice President of Phar macy Practice Innova tion and Advocacy for CVS Health. “However, although it’s perfectly safe to get both vaccines at the same time, you

should not receive either if you currently have COVID-19, regardless of whether or not you have symptoms.”

Scheduling vaccines at CVS Pharmacy is easy and convenient

At CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic, you can conveniently schedule a flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine or booster in the same appointment. Flu vaccines are available there via digital sched uling (through CVS.com or the CVS Pharma cy app), and both offer walk-in appointments for people of all ages, seven days a week, with evening and weekend hours.

You can also sched ule an appointment for a bivalent COVID-19 booster at all CVS Phar macy locations and at select MinuteClinic lo

cations. For convenience of scheduling vaccines for your whole family, the pharmacy’s digi tal scheduling tool lets you schedule vaccines for multiple patients at once, which makes it easier for families and other groups to get vac cinated together.

Seniors have addi tional options when it comes to flu shots

Seniors are at a great er risk of developing se vere flu-related illnesses and have an increased need for vaccines. In addition to the standard Quadrivalent (QIV) flu vaccine, CVS Pharma cy and MinuteClinic offer two “senior dose” flu vaccines—Fluzone HD and Fluad—which are intended to create a stronger immune re sponse for patients over the age of 65.

Who is eligible for a COVID-19 booster?

According to the Food and Drug Admin istration (FDA) and the CDC, the bivalent COVID-19 booster may be administered no less than two months after a patient completes an initial primary series or two months after their most recent monovalent booster dose. If you ha ven’t yet received your primary series of the COVID-19 vaccine, you are not eligible for a bi valent booster shot. In addition, certain immu nizations have age and location restrictions.
