• On April 20, 1841, Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” first appears in print. The tale, generally considered to be the first detective story, describes the methods used to solve a series of murders.

• On April 22, 1889, at precisely high noon, 50,000 to 60,000 would-be settlers make a mad dash into the newly opened Oklahoma Territory to claim cheap land.

Towns like Norman and Oklahoma City sprang up almost overnight.

• On April 18, 1906, in San Francisco, an earthquake registering 8.0 kills 3,000 people as 30,000 buildings are destroyed. Two days later, 20,000 refugees trapped by a massive fire were evacuated from the foot of Van Ness Avenue onto the USS Chicago.

• On April 21, 1930, a fire at an Ohio prison kills 320 inmates, some of whom burn to death when they are not unlocked from their cells. The prison, built to hold 1,500 people, had 4,300 prisoners.

• On April 23, 1945, two weeks after taking over as U.S. president, Harry Truman gives a tongue-lashing to Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov. Truman was determined to take a tougher postwar stance with the Soviets than his late predecessor, Franklin Roosevelt, had. Molotov, indignant, stormed out of the meeting with Truman.

• On April 24, 1953, Winston Churchill, the British leader who guided Great Britain and the Allies through the crisis of World War II, is knighted

by Queen Elizabeth II. He would win the Nobel Prize in literature later that same year.

• On April 19, 1993, near Waco, Texas, after a 51-day siege, the FBI launches a tear-gas assault on the compound of Branch Davidian leader David Koresh and his disciples as part of an investigation into illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

Mango-Glazed Ham The secret to this sweet glazed spiral-cut ham is mango chutney and mango nectar.

1 cup Major Grey’s mango chutney 1/3 cup mango nectar 2 cloves garlic, crushed with press 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon mustard powder Pepper 1 (7½ to 8 pound) fully cooked, spiral-sliced, smoked bone-in reduced-sodium half ham 1/4 cup (or up to 1/2 cup) boiling water Parsley springs, for garnish Mango slices, for garnish Pineapple slices, for garnish 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. In blender, combine chutney, nectar, garlic, honey, mustard powder and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper.

Blend until very smooth. (Chutney mixture can be made, covered and refrigerated up to 1 day ahead.)

2. Place ham in 13-by-9-inch roasting pan. Rub chutney mixture on skin sides of ham. Bake 1 hour 15 minutes or until golden brown crust forms and meat thermometer inserted horizontally in bottom portion of ham (not touching bone) reaches 140 F. 3. Transfer ham to serving platter.

Pour juices from pan into small bowl.

Whisk in 1/4 to 1/2 cup boiling water, until pan juices are desired consistency. Garnish platter with parsley sprigs and mango and pineapple slices.

Serve ham with pan juices. Serves 16.

Gently shake the bag of sand to coat the glue on the egg to reveal the design you made. Remove the egg with your fingers and slip it onto one of the wooden skewers through the hole in the shell, making sure the skewer doesn't go through the hole at the opposite end.

Here are three easy steps for an afternoon of fun: 1. BLOWING EGGS To empty an egg, poke a small hole with a straight pin at each end of a washed raw egg. Carefully wiggle a toothpick or wooden skewer into one of the holes to break the yolk. Place a drinking straw over the hole on top, and blow through the straw, collecting the contents of the egg in a small dish. Rinse out the empty shell and let dry. Store in an empty egg carton until ready to use.

2. SHAKE AND DECORATE First, poke wooden skewers into a chunk of floral foam. Set aside. Scoop several tablespoons of brightly colored sand (available at toy and craft stores) into a clear plastic sandwich bag. Squeeze household glue from a plastic bottle in a simple design, such as zigzags or an alphabet letter, onto a

This recipe can be prepared with such ease, you’ll be able to join in the Easter egg hunt and still have dinner on the table on time.

1 (9-inch) refrigerated unbaked piecrust 1 (4 serving) package sugarfree vanilla cook-and-serve pudding mix 1 (4 serving) package sugarfree lemon gelatin 1¼ cups water 1 (8 ounce) package fat-free cream cheese 1 cup reduced calorie whipped topping Sugar substitute to equal 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon coconut extract 2 tablespoons flaked coconut 1. Preheat oven to 450 F. Place piecrust in a 9-inch pie plate and flute edges. Prick bottom and sides with a fork. Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until crust is lightly browned. Place pie plate on wire rack and cool completely.

2. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, combine dry pudding mix, dry gelatin and water. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring often. Place saucepan on wire rack and let set 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. After both piecrust and filling have cooled, in a medium bowl, stir cream cheese with a spoon until soft. Stir in 1/2 cup whipped topping, sugar substitute and coconut extract. Spread cream cheese mixture evenly into piecrust.

4. Fold remaining 1/2 cup whipped topping into pudding mixture. Spread pudding mixture evenly over cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle coconut evenly over top. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Cut into 8 pieces.

Investing in volatile times—Like the lyrics in the song

by The Clash…should I stay or should I go?

Many people are pondering their course of action given the recent turmoil in geopolitical affairs where Russia has invaded Ukraine and the volatility of the stock market.

Which makes the most sense to you? Getting out of the stock market because there has been volatility, or staying the course and letting the market settle down before making emotional decisions that could be detrimental to your financial health?

Well, let’s take a walk down the memory lane of stock market gyrations. If we go back to 2000, the first of a 3-year decline in the stock market, that lost approximately 10% of value. Followed by 2001 with Jeffrey H. Massey a 13% loss, followed by 2003 with a 23% loss. Those were three tough Certified Financial Planner™ years to live through, especially if you were withdrawing cash to Massey and Associates, Inc. pay your bills in retirement. That 3-year loss of value was disconcerting, to say the least. However, if you bailed out of the market at the end of that third year, you would have missed the massive recovery that unfolded over the next four years.

Sadly, there was yet another period of large declines in the market that started in the fourth quarter of 2007 and ended in the “trough” as it is called (the bottom of a market decline before the market starts recovering) on March 6 of 2009. The S&P 500, at its low point, was 666.80, which again was a rough ride. The market finally recovered in 2013 from its high point in 2007.

At the end of 2021, the S&P 500 was listed as 4,766.18 from the low of 666.80.

That is an increase of over 700% in 12 years! So, no surprise that the market is slowing down a bit. (https://ycharts.com/indicators/sp_500_annual, n.d.)(See the chart below) What this history lesson teaches us is that it is far more important to have time IN the market, not TIMING the market. The typical advice is to stay the course and let the market forces trim some of this hyper-growth to position for future growth.

We call this type of market gyration the “adult” roller coaster, and we prefer to reduce the level of risk within our clients’ portfolios. We prefer to put them on the “kiddie” roller coaster of risk. Our bias is to help reduce risk.

Let’s look at a simple example, not saying this is right for everyone, it just makes the math easy here. If you were to put one half of your portfolio in the

stock market and the other half in a protected position, that cannot lose value when the market goes down, here is an example of what would happen. Let’s say the stock market is down 10%, but your portfolio is down 8%. Well, if one half of your money is down 8% and the other half isn’t down at all, then you are down 4% on your entire portfolio. Is a 4% downturn in value too much for you? If it is, simply put more money into protected positions. Ultimately, the amount that you want protected is up to you, after all, it is your money!

In our opinion, this type of strategy allows for half the money to be in the market for long-term growth while protecting the other half against market losses. We refer to this strategy as the “kiddie” roller coaster as we have a bias against too much stock market risk. https://ycharts.com/indicators/sp_500_annual

Slice that big ol' onion in half, then into half rings. Make these as thick or thin as you wish. The thinner they are, the faster they cook, but thicker slices come out sweeter.

2. In a heavy-bottomed skillet on medium heat, melt the butter and oil together. Add the onion and turn to coat; sprinkle with a pinch of sugar to help speed up caramelization. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 25-45 minutes or until delectably soft and golden brown.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Now, if I'm going to take the time to caramelize onions, I make at least a triple batch. They're great on EVERYTHING from burgers, sandwiches, steak, chicken and pork to salads, soups, pizza, casseroles and omelets — you name it! Keep some in the fridge or freezer to instantly upgrade practically everything you eat.

Splatter Ware It is not easy to identify antique and vintage ceramics, because many were made by small local potteries and not marked. Workmen often moved to another factory but continued to make the same type of wares and decoration.

Spatter ware is a pottery decorated with paint that is actually spattered on the plate by flicking a stick dipped in the paint. Very similar decorations were made by dabbing paint on with a sponge. Many collectors think spatter and sponge are the same, so you must check any written descriptions. Both are popular vintage collectibles.

Both types of folk pottery were made in the early 1800s in Scotland, Italy, Holland, France and the United States.

Similar dinnerware and other household dishes are still being made but with the help of machines, not often by hand. Tulips are often pictured either as part of a border or as a single flower in the center. Price is determined by the condition and the skill of the decorator.

Conestoga Auction Co. sold a collection of this type of pottery, with many early examples selling for hundreds of dollars. A plate with a border of green and blue spatter stripes and a center with two stylized tulips did not have a maker’s mark and sold for $224. *** After my mother died, we found a Pairpoint lamp in a box in the attic. It looks original except for the cord. There are two stamps under the shade dated July 9, 1901. It has puffy butterflies. The base has a diamond-shaped stamp underneath. Thomas J. Pairpoint founded the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1880. The company joined with nearby glassworks and made glass, lamps and silver-plated pieces. Homeowners know that all sorts of issues can affect a home. Issues can run the gamut from the merely annoying to the unsafe. Electrical issues fall into the latter category, posing a significant safety hazard if left unchecked.

According to the home safety experts at UL (formerly known as Underwriters Laboratories), learning to recognize warning signs of electrical wiring issues can greatly lower the risk of house fires. House fires pose a significant threat, as the Electrical Safety Foundation International notes that electrical malfunctions cause more than 50,000 house fires each year. UL indicates that the majority of those house fires can be prevented, and learning to recognize signs of a electrical problems in a home is a key component of home fire prevention.

• Dimming or flickering lights: The UL notes that light fixtures do not typically draw a substantial amount of power, so dimming or flickering lights is not often indicative of an issue with a fixture.

Dimming or flickering lights could indicate that the circuit the lights are on is overburdened, most likely by large appliances sharing the circuit with the lights. If dimming and flickering lights are a problem, homeowners can speak to an electrician about moving the fixtures to another circuit or installing a new line specifically for major appliances.

• Odors: Odor emanating from an outlet, fuse box or breaker panel should be reported to an electrician immediately.

The odor, which some homeowners indicate smells like fish, could be a result of an overheated circuit. Odor coming from an outlet, fuse box or breaker panel could indicate a significant electrical issue, so homeowners should not hesitate to report this problem to

an electrician. Odors can sometimes travel through HVAC systems as well, so homeowners should take note and call an electrician even if their outlets do not smell.

• Hot outlets/switch plates: Outlets and/or switch plates that are hot to the touch are another indicator of an electrical issue. UL notes that outlets that become hot even when nothing is plugged into them could be wired incorrectly. In such instances, an electrician will need to fix the issue, and in the meantime it may be best for homeowners to flip the breaker or remove the fuse for the outlet.

• Frequently blown fuses or tripped breakers: According to UL, circuit breakers and fuses have a built-in failsafe that is designed to prevent overloading. Sometimes a tripped breaker is a result of an aging appliance. One way to detect that is to plug in the product to more than one outlet in the house. If each breaker trips, then the appliance is likely to blame. However, if using the same outlet continues to trip the breaker regardless of what’s plugged into it, then the circuit requires the attention of an electrician.

Electrical issues increase the risk for home fires. Fortunately, such issues are generally preventable and often easily remedied by a qualified electrician.

If dogs could talk, this is how two regal German Shepherds named Ruby and Ralph would refer to their owner, Chris LaColle. Chris is their rock star, their protector, their “human”. Ruby is a two-year old shepherd and Ralph is LaColle’s recently-acquired six-month old shepherd. These two best friends have learned to share their owner with the many similarly adoring dogs who LaColle cares for and boards in his home. A cozy home. A welcoming home. A pet-loving home.

Chris LaColle has been an animal lover his entire life. He has been taking care of dogs, cats, chickens ~even a bearded dragon ~ since he was just a teenager. Eight years ago, Chris formalized his busy pet care business by creating Chris’ Canine Club, a home-based pet boarding service located in a peaceful residential neighborhood in Coventry. Today, he boards dogs of all breeds, ages, sizes, and disabilities.
