How to save up for your first home Home ownership is a dream for people across the globe. Many people save for years before buying their first homes, squirreling away every dollar they can with the hopes they can one day become homeowners. But thanks to factors beyond their control, even the most devoted savers can sometimes feel like their dream of home ownership may never come true. According to the Pew Research Center, American workers’ paychecks are larger than they were 40 years ago, but their purchasing power is essentially the same. Things aren’t much different in Canada, where analysis from Statistics Canada and the Bank of Canada has shown that, since 2015, wage growth in Canada has been weaker than in the United States. Various challenges can make it difficult to buy a home. However, some simple strategies can help prospective home buyers build their savings as they move closer to the day when they can call themselves “homeowners.” • Determine where your money is going. If you’re finding it hard to grow your savings, audit your monthly expenses to determine where your money is going. Using exclusively debit or credit cards can simplify this process, as all you need to do is log into your accounts and see how your money was spent over a given period. If you routinely use cash to pay for items, even just to buy coffee on the way to work, keep a notepad handy so
you can jot down each expense. Do this for a month and then examine how you spent your money. Chances are you will see various ways to save, and you can then redirect that money into your savings account. • Become a more savvy grocery shopper. Another great way to save more money is to alter something you already do each month: grocery shopping. If you haven’t already, sign up for discount clubs at your local grocer. This is a largely effortless way for shoppers, especially those buying food for families, to save considerable amounts of money. Shopping sales at competing grocery stores also can save money.
• Dine in more often. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that Americans spend, on average, 6 percent of their household budgets on food. However, the USDA also notes that Americans spend 5 percent of their disposable income on dining out. If these figures mirror your spending habits, you can nearly cut your food spending in half by dining out less frequently. That might be a sacrifice for foodies, but it can get you that much closer to buying your own home. Saving enough money to purchase your first home is a worthy effort that can be made easier by employing a few budget-friendly strategies.

Simple ways to prolong the life of poinsettias
Poinsettias and their rich red, white or variegated color schemes are the ideal backdrop for Christmas celebrations. In fact, poinsettias are among the most popular decorative flowers during the holiday season. According to the 2013 USDA Floriculture Statistics report, poinsettias accounted for about one-quarter (23 percent) of all flowering potted plant sales that year. Roughly 34 million poinsettia plants are sold in a given season. Indigenous to Central America, the plant was introduced to North America in the 1820s when Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, brought the red-and-green plant back with him from a trip abroad. While millions of poinsettias will be purchased for the holiday season, many mistakenly think their utility ends once New Year’s Day has come and gone. But with proper care poinsettia plants can continue to thrive and bring warmth and beauty to a home long after the holiday decorations have been tucked away. • Choose a hearty plant. Experts with the University of Vermont Extension Department of Plant and Soil Science say that many people mistake the plant’s leaves for its flowers. The red, white or pink bracts are actually modified leaves. The flowers of the plant are the yellow clustered buds in the center called “cyathia.” Choose poinsettia plants that have
buds which are, ideally, not yet open. • Keep the temperature consistent. Poinsettias prefer a room temperature between 60 and 68 F during the day and 10 degrees cooler at night. Humidity levels between 20 and 50 percent are ideal. Group plants on water-filled trays full of pebbles to help increase humidity levels. • Place near sunlight. The United Kingdom-based Perrywood floral company advises placing poinsettia plants near a bright windowsill but not in direct sunlight. Do not let a poinsettia touch cold window panes. • Avoid drafts. The plants are sensitive to drafts and changes in temperature. So it’s best to keep poinsettias away from drafty doors, windows, radiators, or fireplaces. • Don’t drown the roots. Wait until the surface of the compost dries out before watering the plant anew. Also, the decorative foil wrapper that covers pots can trap water and lead to root rot. Remove it or poke holes in the bottom to allow for drainage. • Cut back plants. Come mid-March, cut back the plant by half to encourage new shoots, suggests the University of Illinois Extension. The plants also can be placed outside in the spring after the risk of frost has passed. Bring poinsettias back in around mid-September to early October to force them to bloom again.

• On Dec. 10, 1690, a near-mutiny forces the Massachusetts Bay Colony to issue the first paper currency in the Western Hemisphere. Soldiers were typically paid in coins, but shortages forced armies to temporarily issue IOUs — in one case, in the form of cut-up playing cards. • On Dec. 7, 1787, in Dover, Delaware, the U.S. Constitution is unanimously ratified by all 30 delegates to the Delaware Constitutional Convention, making Delaware the first state of the modern United States. Government under the U.S. Constitution took effect on March 4, 1789. • On Dec. 9, 1921, an engineer at General Motors discovers that when he added tetraethyl lead to gasoline, it eliminated the knocking sound of internal-combustion engines. In the 1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency phased out leaded gasoline due to health concerns. • On Dec. 8, 1941, Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress and a lifelong pacifist, casts the sole Congressional vote against the U.S. declaration of war on Japan. She also had voted against U.S. involvement in World War I. • On Dec. 11, 1978, a half dozen masked robbers raid the Lufthansa Airlines cargo building at JFK Airport in New York, making off with more than $5 million in cash ($20 million in today’s dollars) and almost $1 million in jewelry. • On Dec. 12, 1989, Leona Helmsley, nicknamed the “Queen of Mean,” is sentenced to four years in prison, 750 hours of community service and a $7.1 million tax-fraud fine in New York. Helmsley once quipped that “only the little people pay taxes.” • On Dec. 13, 2003, in Seattle, the iconic Hat ‘n’ Boots Tex Gas Station is hauled away from the spot where it had stood for almost 50 years. The 44-foot-wide Stetson hat had perched atop the filling station’s office, while the 22-foot-tall cowboy boots housed the men’s and the women’s restrooms.

10 tips for winter safety Winter begins on December 21, 2020, and extends to March 20, 2021, in the Northern Hemisphere. Those three months can be both beautiful to behold and difficult to endure. Winter has its share of safety hazards, and extra effort may be required to protect one’s health and well-being when the chill creeps in. In recognition of that, the National Safety Council and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these winter safety tips. 1. Winterize your home to keep interior temperatures comfortable and prevent weather-related damage. Winterizing includes insulating water lines that run along exterior walls, cleaning out gutters, installing weather stripping, and replenishing insulation. 2. Exercise in cold temperatures can put many people at risk of heart attack — especially those who are typically inactive. If you must exercise in cold weather, remember to stretch beforehand. Take breaks when shoveling or ask for help. 3. Check carbon monoxide alarms to see if they are working properly. Every year in the United States, more than 400 people die from and 50,000 are treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. Exhaust from improperly vented heating appliances can contribute to carbon monoxide sickness. 4. Prepare a winter emergency kit and
keep it in your car in case you are stranded in inclement weather. The kit can include food, water, blankets, first-aid supplies, flares, and booster cables, among other items. 5. Wear appropriate clothing for the temperature and precipitation. Layers can be added or removed as needed. 6. Sprinkle sand or cat litter on icy patches of walkways to improve traction. Sand or cat litter is easier on the environment than some chemical ice melt products. 7. Consider a whole-house generator as an emergency backup if the power goes out in winter. Generators can keep the heat running and the refrigerator humming along until power is restored. 8. Exercise caution with space heaters and other supplemental heating devices. Turn them off when you leave the room, and do not leave them on overnight while you are sleeping. 9. Slow down when driving in the snow. Black ice patches can be difficult to see, and snow itself can reduce tire traction. Leave extra time to get where you need to be. 10. Consider switching from gloves to mittens. With fingers touching each other inside mittens, they help generate more body heat than when they’re inside gloves. These are just a few safety tips to heed during winter.

• Five ways to keep yourself from turning up the thermostat this winter: Put on a sweater; have a nice bowl of soup or stew; wear slippers or thick nonskid socks, grab a comfy blanket; snuggle up with someone special. • “If you bathe in a tub, try rubbing on bath oil before getting in the tub. You will get greater coverage and more moisturizing power from your bath oil. And at this time of year, who doesn’t need that?â€? — M.E. in Washington • “Here’s a great way to use Christmas cards from last year: Trace a child’s hand on the back of the pictures. Cut them out and use them to make a wreath for the front door. Or, make small jigsaw puzzles for young children to play with. Any good, detailed artwork on a card front will do. Make squiggly lines in the fashion of a jigsaw puzzle, then cut out. It helps if the cardstock is good and thick.â€? — M.M. in Utah • “To keep light bulbs from sticking in the socket, apply petroleum jelly to the base of the bulb before screwing it into the fixture.â€? — B.D. in Virginia • Here’s an oldie but a goodie: Add a few drops of water to votive cups before adding a candle. The wax will float on the water, and when the candle burns down, it won’t get stuck in the votive glass. • “Burned rice? No problem. While it’s still hot, carefully remove to a new pot any rice not browned or blackened. Then top it with a single slice of white bread. Allow it to sit for several minutes under a tightly fitted lid. The burned smell is absorbed by the bread, and the rice is fit to eat.â€? — M.U. in Michigan Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

A table has four legs and a flat top — except when it is designed by a clever cabinetmaker. Freeman’s Auction in Philadelphia sold an unusual rosewood table with two partial shelves built below the 20-inch square tabletop. It is decorated with carved dragons on the brackets and a spider and fly inlay of mixed metal and mother-of-pearl. The Anglo-Japanese inlaid rosewood table was made by A. and H. Lejambre of Philadelphia around 1880; the company produced work from 1865 to 1907. Similar tables are in several museums. The table sold at auction for $13,000. *** My parents bought a home in Florida and purchased the contents, including an interesting table used as a lamp table. The top flips to one side, doubling its surface, and can be raised for storage. Open, it measures 17 inches high by 34 inches square. A label reads “Williams-Kimp Furniture Co., Grand Rapids, Mich. Could you tell me more about this table and its value? Game tables were popular during the 18th and 19th centuries — first in England, and then in the United States. Cabinetmakers designed clever tables suitable for writing letters and for pastimes like playing cards, chess or backgammon. The tables looked like regular tables when not in use. Some had a hinged top that folded, swiveled or slid open to reveal a playing surface. Others had a game board inlaid on top. The Williams-Kimp Furniture Co. started in Grand Rapids in 1923. It was purchased by Baker Furniture in 1951. The company made reproductions of American Federal furniture including dining sets, secretaries, desks, chairs and pieces like your game table. Your table is worth about $175 to $225. *** I have 11 Imperial Glass Whirling Star Marigold Iridescent punch cups and have no idea how to price them. Can you help? Is Sofia Coppola still directing movies? Also, what about her father, the legendary Francis Ford Coppola? — M.D. Despite her family ties, Sofia Coppola did not have a good start in show business. She was slammed by critics and audiences alike back in 1991 when she was cast in her father’s disappointing “The Godfather: Part III” after actress Winona Ryder was ill, and her acting career never recovered. Fortunately, she seems to have inherited her father’s gift behind the lens. She both won and was nominated for an Oscar for writing and directing, respectively, for the motion picture “Lost in Translation” back in 2003. The dramatic film starred Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, and really turned her career around. A few years later, Sofia directed Kirsten Dunst in a retelling of historical figure “Marie Antoinette.” Her most recent project is the film “On the Rocks,” starring Murray once again. It’s available for streaming on AppleTV+. As for Francis Ford Coppola, he appears to have retired from filmmaking. I often wonder if he’ll attempt a fourth chapter of “The Godfather” saga, but at 81 years old, he’s likely very much enjoying his retirement. *** Is the show “Pose” coming back? — R.S. Yes, a third season of the Ryan Murphy (“American Horror Story”) produced Netflix show “Pose” is expected to premiere around June 2021, assuming that production resumes as planned. The Emmy-nominated series is set in the Latino and African American ball culture and stars Billy Porter, who himself won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2019. Production for the third season was stopped just a few days into filming because of the pandemic, so that’s set everything back, but the good news is that the show has indeed been renewed. *** A friend of mine was telling me there is a TV show that

stars rapper 50 Cent and that he’s actually quite good in it. Is it still on the air? — B.P. Your friend was talking about the ABC prison drama “For Life,” which is based on the true story of Isaac Wright Jr., who was falsely convicted of drug charges in 1991. While behind bars, he became a paralegal and helped turn around prison sentences of some of his fellow inmates, and eventually his own conviction. In the series adaptation, Wright’s story is told through a character named Aaron Wallace, played by actor Nicholas Pinnock. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson plays a violent inmate named Cassius. He not only acts in the drama, he’s an executive producer. Season two debuted this November and airs on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. In real life, after his release from prison, Isaac Wright Jr. went on to earn his law degree and still practices to this day.
