Hannah Brown
former Stormtrooper who developed a conscience. He’s also British, and had some success in his native country before becoming internationally known. Reportedly, Abrams was a fan of the 2011 film “Attack the Block,” a sci-fi comedy in which Boyega co-starred. *** Is it true that Maggie Smith regrets working on “Downton Abbey” and the “Harry Potter” films? I can’t imagine that when they are such successful projects. — C.T. Smith, a highly respected Academy Award-winning actress, recently told the U.K.’s “Evening Standard” that she found her roles in “Downton Abbey” and “Harry Potter” to be “unsatisfying.” Upon further reading, though, I found that she was “deeply grateful” for the work, but that she didn’t really feel she was “acting.” Her role in the latter did help her bond with her five grandchildren, though, but her first love will always be theater. BEACON COMMUNICATIONS Thank you,
Hannah Brown was my favorite of all the Bachelorettes, and I was so happy to see her win “Dancing with the Stars.” Do you think she’ll end up doing something else in television, or will she go back to Alabama and lead a private life? — B.B. Brown was kind of an underdog when she was chosen to lead “The Bachelorette” on ABC last season. She didn’t even make it to the hometown dates when she was competing for Colton Underwood’s affections on his season of “The Bachelor,” but the producers saw something in her and selected her. They were right, because she’s become one of the most popular leads that franchise has had in a long time, and then she went on to further fame by winning the mirror ball trophy on “Dancing with the Stars.” Brown recently told E! News that while she admired her “Bachelorette” predecessors for capitalizing on their fame, she wasn’t going to become just an Instagram influencer. “I have definitely looked up to all the women before me, but I think there’ll be a different story for Hannah B., and I’m excited for that,” she said. Her aspirations reportedly include having her own talk show and writing books, both fiction and nonfiction. *** I’m behind on the “Star Wars” movies, having finally watched “The Force Awakens,” the first of the final trilogy. I was really amazed at how talented the actors who play Rey and Finn are, and I’d never seen them in anything before this. What was their prior acting experience? — D.P. Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, is a multitalented actress from England who is a classically trained in dance and also sings jazz. She had a few small roles in British television before joining the “Star Wars” franchise. According to “The Guardian,” when Ridley heard that the filmmakers of “The Force Awakens” were auditioning unknowns in addition to name actors, she asked her agent to get her a meeting. She ended up auditioning for producer JJ Abrams five times and got the part. John Boyega was the newcomer who made quite the impression as Finn, a

Social Security’s Ticket To Work Program: Celebrating 20 Years Of Career Development And Support (NAPS)—December 17 marks the 20th anniversary of theTicket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act—legislation that established the Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other incentives to increase access to employment for adults with disabilities who want to work. Since 1999, the Ticket program has helped over one million Social Security disability beneficiaries work for the first time or return to work and find their path to financial independence. Today, the Ticket program continues to serve people with disabilities ages 18 through 64 who receive SSI or SSDI. If you’re eligible, it can connect you with free employment services that help you prepare for, find and maintain employment. The program provides services such as career counseling, vocational rehabilitation, job development, placement and training from authorized providers (known as Employment Networks) and/or your State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency. If you are ready for work, don’t let the fear of losing your benefits stand in the way. As long as you continue to have a disability, you can explore work while maintaining access to some or all of your Social Security disability benefits, and Medicare and/or Medicaid coverage. Rules known as Work Incentives provide you with the support to enter, reenter or stay in the workforce by protecting your eligibility for benefit payments and/or healthcare until

By Jennifer Coates The moment you walk into a To The Pointe Dance Studio, you realize that this “world of dance” is different than any other. The reception area is open and bright with white walls that are decorated with photographs of the smiling faces of the studio’s beautiful dancers. You are greeted by TTP staff members who are friendly and welcoming. Music, accompanied by laughter and joyful voices, can be heard from afar. The hustle and bustle of the studio is ignited by positive energy and excitement. Dancers at To The Pointe maintain a healthy balance of working hard and being focused on becoming better dancers while enjoying themselves and having fun achieving their goals. They are extremely dedicated to both their craft and the performances that are produced by TTP. Senior dancers at TTP have been seen performing numbers from CATS, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE NUTCRACKER, The WOODEN SOLDIER DANCE & many more. They have also performed in Walt Disney World and on cruise ships multiple times. Being able to include fun into their learning process is enhanced by the fact that TTP dancers do not participate in competitions. Rather, they focus on the quality of their theatrical performances as an art form and the expression of their love of dance and of individuality. Dancers begin their journey as young as 18 months of age. “Mommy & Me” classes provide a safe and inviting environment for these budding ballerina hopefuls. Individuals of any age may begin dancing at any time in their lives. Dancers are encouraged to continue dancing right

through their adult years. To The Pointe offers classes broken down into appropriate age groups. A carefully planned curriculum is designed by TTP’s Director Sheri Masiello who has spent over 25 years cultivating a fun, professional and educational learning plan. This curriculum allows for each level to learn and grow into the dancers and individuals they are meant to become. A variety of dance classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Pointe, Lyrical, Contemporary and Hip Hop. Classes are offered to girls and boys, young and wise. To The Pointe has just completed its annual Holiday Spectacular Performances & Toy Drive, held at Sapinsley Hall on the Rhode Island College campus. Dancers continue their
learning progress of stage work and confidence-building as well as raise awareness about those who are in need. Over the past 20 years, TTP has donated over 10,000 toys to the needy and was successful in adding to that collection again this year! Six Quick Tips For Winter Driving (NAPS)—When it comes to winter car care, many motorists tend to think of antifreeze and batteries—but vehicles need extra attention in winter, especially when the temperatures drop. “Making sure your vehicle is properly prepared for all of winter’s elements will help you avoid the aggravation of an unplanned road emergency,” says Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. The non-profit Car Care Council offers six quick tips to help your vehicle perform at its best during cold weather months: 1. Keep the gas tank at least half full; this decreases the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. 2. Check the tire pressure, including the spare, as tires can lose pressure when temperatures drop. Consider special tires if snow and ice are a problem in your area. 3. Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed. 4. Allow your car a little more time to warm up when temperatures are below freezing, so that the oil in the engine and transmission circulate and get warm. 5. Change to low-viscosity oil in winter as it will flow more easily between moving parts when it is cold. Drivers in sub-zero temperatures should drop their oil weight from 10-W30 to 5-W30, as thickened oil can

make it hard to start the car. 6. Consider using cold weather washer fluid and special winter windshield blades if you live in a place with especially harsh winter conditions. Drivers should also stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication. In addition, the Car Care Council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician, as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. • On Jan. 5, 1643, in the first record of a legal divorce in the American colonies, Anne Clarke of the Massachusetts Bay Colony is granted a divorce from her absent and adulterous husband, Denis Clarke, by the Quarter Court of Boston. • On Jan. 1, 1818, “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” is published. The book by 20-year-old Mary Shelley is frequently called the world’s first science fiction novel. In Shelley’s tale, a scientist animates a creature constructed from dismembered corpses. • On Jan. 4, 1896, six years after Wilford Woodruff, president of the Mormon Church, issued his Manifesto reforming political, religious and economic life in Utah, the territory is admitted into the Union as the 45th state. Woodruff’s 1890 Manifesto included a renunciation of the traditional Mormon practice of polygamy. • On Dec. 30, 1922, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) is established, comprising a confederation of Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine and the Transcaucasian Federation. In 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolved following the collapse of its communist government. • On Jan. 3, 1961, President Dwight Eisenhower closes the American embassy in Havana and severs diplomatic relations between the United States and Fidel Castro’s government in Cuba. The action signaled that the U.S. was prepared to take extreme measures to oppose Castro’s regime. • On Jan. 2, 1974, President Richard Nixon signs the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, requiring states to limit highway speeds to 55 mph or lose federal highway funding. It was a result of fuel shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. • On Dec. 31, 1999, the United States officially hands over control of the Panama Canal, putting the strategic waterway into Panamanian hands for the first time. not apply, since the ovum (egg) you would be carrying would come from another woman and it is her age that determines the risk for the fetus. Older mothers also are more likely to carry twins (or more than two fetuses). Compared with younger mothers, older mothers have a higher risk for: high blood pressure during pregnancy (15% vs. 5%); pre-eclampsia, also called toxemia (6% vs. 2%); diabetes during pregnancy (18% vs. 4%); hemorrhage after delivery (26% vs. 15%); Caesarean section (78% vs. 33%); preterm delivery (22% vs. 8%); and admission of the baby to the intensive care unit (3% vs. less than 1%). Miscarriage rate (after 11 weeks) in women over 55 is estimated to be about 10%, compared with 1% in younger women. Maternal death is much more likely for older women than younger; however, that risk is small, less than 2 per 1,000 in a separate Swedish study of mothers over 45. Overall, these risks are not small. You should think through your risks before making a decision. I’m disappointed in the lack of advice you received. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: The 71-yearold woman from a recent column who finds sticking her finger to test her blood glucose too painful to be willing to do it likely was never told that while sticking her finger at the tip IS painful, sticking at the side of the end of the finger is barely painful, if at all. I find myself surprised that those who stick fingers for blood at the hospital don’t seem to know this either. Shame on them. — R.S. ANSWER: There are more nerve endings at the tip of the finger, so that is more painful for most. There often is better blood flow on the sides as well. Thank you for writing with this reminder. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu.

December 16, 2019
DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please comment on common or uncommon issues that might be expected in a pregnancy at age 57? I am overall very healthy, with no issues other than slightly elevated LDL. I have not gone through menopause. I had four full-term pregnancies, the last at age 35 (after which I had my tubes tied), and no miscarriages. I asked my doctor two years ago if I would have an issue being a surrogate and was told there was no reason I couldn’t be, but my current physician told me that it can be very dangerous at my age. I am concerned that the practice is just covering itself against any liability. I realize that this is my decision alone and I would not hold my doctors accountable, but I’d also like the real truth regarding any potential issues I would be likely to encounter. I appreciate your thoughts. — M.V. ANSWER: I admire your willingness to consider being a surrogate. However, the risks of pregnancy in a 57-year-old woman are significant. A study from the U.K. from 2016 quantified the risks pretty thoroughly; however, of the 233 women studied, only two of them were older than 57, so your risks are probably higher than the average risk for an older mother in the study (which was defined here as 48 years or older at the date of delivery). Before I go over the risks, let me point out that one major risk for older mothers, Down syndrome, may
