The Benefits Of Preplanning Your Funeral Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving. To remove the burden and stress associated with funeral planning, many adults preplan their funerals. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral services were conducted in accordance to their own wishes. Preplanning a funeral may sound morbid, as few people want to think about their deaths or discuss dying with their families. But there are numerous benefits to preplanning funerals. • Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy. • Preplanning ensures your wishes are honored. Men and women who formalize their funeral plans will ensure their wishes are honored. That can give men and women peace of mind and will provide peace of mind to the loved ones they leave behind, who can attend funeral services knowing those services are being conducted in adherence to their loved one’s wishes. Even men and women who discuss their wishes for their funerals with loved ones may not have those wishes honored if they are not put in writing. • Preplanning can help control costs. Preplanning often includes men and women setting aside money for their funerals before they pass away. Knowing that a funeral, which can be expensive, is already paid for can provide additional peace of mind. Instead of worrying that their relatives will be forced to handle the burden of financing their funerals, men and women who preplan can rest easy knowing their insurance money and life’s savings will be going to their surviving loved ones and not toward paying for funeral expenses. • Preplanning protects families faced with sudden death. Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away. Preplanning a funeral may not be something to look forward to, but doing so can protect families and provide men and women with some peace of mind

• It was Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran who made the following sage observation: “I have learnt silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strange, I am ungrateful to these teachers.” • Those who study such things have determined that one out of every four alcoholic drinks consumed in the world has vodka in it. • Famed actor Clark Gable, dubbed the King of Hollywood, was once a hobo. • At some point you’ve almost certainly heard a coward described as “lily-livered,” but did you ever wonder where that expression came from? It was once believed that the seat of courage in the human body was the liver; therefore, someone who was timid presumably lacked blood in the liver, causing that organ to become white. • Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than for the U.S. Treasury. • There once was a law in Marshalltown, Iowa, stating that it was illegal for a horse to eat a fire hydrant. And in Oregon, it was at one time illegal for a dead person to serve on a jury. • Would the history of medicine be different if Sigmund Freud had gone into law instead of psychoanalysis? That was his original aspiration in life — to be a lawyer. • Karaoke and karate: Other than the fact that they are both from Japan, you wouldn’t think they have much in common. However, they both have the same root word, “kara,” which means empty. “Oke” means “voice” and “te” means “hand;” hence, “karaoke” is “empty voice,” and “karate” is “empty hand.” • Half of all Americans live within 50 miles of their birthplace. *** Thought for the Day: “He who buys what he does not need steals from himself.” — Swedish proverb

PICTURE

The one His love had given, And so on earth the body lies,

The cost of a DUI conviction depends on where the offense took place and the circumstances surrounding it, but men and women arrested for DUI can expect to spend thousands of dollars in fees, penalties and associated costs related to their DUI convictions. According to the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, first-time DUI offenders can expect to spend around $8,900 for their transgression, and the organization acknowledges that estimate is conservative. Fines and penalties, attorney’s fees, court costs, insurance premium increases, and restitution fund expenses are among the many factors the ADP considered when determining their estimate. And those costs might just be the upfront costs. The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles estimates that the average cost of a DUI for first-time offenders in that state is closer to $25,000. That estimate includes the cost of SR-22 insurance, which the Alaska DMV estimates at $2,000 per year for five years. SR-22 insurance is a vehicle liability insurance document required by motor vehicle agencies in many states. The document is necessary for high-risk insurance policies, such as those whose policy holders have been convicted for DUI.

His soul is safe in Heaven.

The Benefits To Joining Credit Unions Many people conduct their financial business with banks. But credit unions provide a host of benefits that consumers who have always worked with banks may be unaware of. Credit unions are similar to banks. Perhaps the biggest difference between credit unions and banks is that the former are nonprofit organizations. Credit unions tend to be smaller than banks, and membership may limited to certain people based on pre-established criteria. For example, some credit unions may offer membership only to people who live within a given postal code, people who belong to specific unions or trade groups, or students/employees of certain schools. According to statistics from the Credit Union National Association, 3.7 million people joined a credit union in 2015, and numbers are now at an all-time high. That’s likely because there are many perks to joining a credit union. Why choose to join a credit union? The financial resource Bankrate.com says that, since credit unions are not-for-profit entities, they can pass on extra money to their members through higher interest rates on savings accounts, CDs and other products. This also enables them to offer lower interest rates on loan products and credit cards. Another advantage to credit unions is that they are cooperatives owned and operated by their members. This gives members a say in institutional decisions, and credit unions typically provide exemplary customer service because members are part-owners. Credit unions typically charge fewer fees than national banks. Money Crashers says that many credit unions waive fees on checks, electronic transactions and withdrawals, and they do not require minimum balances. Overdraft fees, where applicable, tend to be lower than traditional banks. Can anyone join a credit union? Credit unions have limited eligibility by law. Customers cannot open an account in any credit union they choose; they must meet certain requirements. These imitations should not deter prospective customers, as many adult consumers can find credit unions they’re eligible to join. Individuals shopping around for a place to put their money may find that credit unions are just what they need.

Antique furnishings, decor, coins, and toys remain popular among consumers. Unlike the mass-produced merchandise of today, antiques have history, and their endurance through decades, if not centuries, is a testament to the quality craftsmanship and materials used to create these often timeless pieces. Antiques also might be more affordable than many shoppers think. Savvy shoppers may find mid-range “brown furniture,” which constitutes some antique wood pieces, more affordable than reproductions. Homeowners and apartment dwellers who want their rooms to stand apart often rely on antiques to provide a unique ambiance. Antique shopping also is a “green” endeavor. Antiquing is an eco-friendly practice, putting to use items that have been recycled and reused. Antiques also can be a good investment, as they generally retain their value while adding texture, contrast and personality to any room of the house. Understanding antiques can take time, but even the novice can develop an eye for pieces that strike their fancy. And thanks to the wealth of information about collectibles and antiques available online, shoppers have constant access to information about antiques at their fingertips. Shoppers may even be able to comparison shop on their mobile phones. Mid-range antiques can be particularly easy to buy thanks to the available inventory. Novices may want to begin by exploring mid-range antiques. As they gain more knowledge and expertise, shoppers who covet antiques can move on to high-end pieces that are more expensive. Some antiques are put in the same category as fine artwork and are considered just as valuable. Another reason to browse and shop antiques is to learn about the value of similar items homeowners may already own. For those looking to downsize a collection or simply liquidate an estate, antiquing is a great way to get hands-on experience. Rummaging through antique stores or markets can be a relaxing experience as well. And many antique enthusiasts find shopping for antiques is like a treasure hunt to find that coveted piece and unearth a bit of history in the process.

cut off blood supply, and this causes a heart attack if the plaques are lodged in the arteries of the heart, a stroke if in the brain and various problems if in other parts of the body. In people who have a history of stroke, it’s particularly important to take steps to reduce further risk. That means a discussion with your doctor about whether you are on the best treatment for atrial fibrillation and whether you have evidence of cholesterol plaques. Even if you don’t have any evidence of plaques, a healthy diet of mostly plants, with whole grains, nuts and seeds, some fatty fish if you enjoy that and sparse amounts of meats reduces many health risks. However, two or three steaks a year is not going to cause harm. The best data available shows that people who have 100 grams (just over 3 ounces) of red meat a week are at the lowest risk of developing blood vessel problems. It’s not clear that zero is better than that small amount. In any event, I am a firm believer that enjoying life is the goal. If having a steak a few times a year is truly enjoyable, the risk is small, and you should enjoy those meals without guilt. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the body’s rate of absorption for calcium? — A. ANSWER: The textbook answer is 20% to 40%, but in reality, the answer is very complicated, as it depends on total body and intracellular calcium, vitamin D levels, presence of phosphates in food and other factors. The short answer is that it’s usually exactly what it needs to be when things work properly. If the body is deficient in calcium, then absorption is maximal, but still most calcium in food is not absorbed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation a year ago. A week after that, I had an MRI that showed I’d had a ministroke and probably several others in the past. I love ribeye steak, and eat it maybe two or three times a year. Is this safe? — R.A. ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation is a rhythm problem of the heart. The natural rhythm is lost, so the heartbeat becomes irregular. Because of the lack of normal movement in the heart, the blood can pool and form clots in the left atrium; these clots can travel downstream to lodge in a blood vessel. Clots can cut off the blood supply to the area where they lodge. It’s most critical when it happens in the brain, since if brain cells die, function is lost. A stroke is just a focal area of cell death in the brain. The size and location of the area in the brain where cell death occurs determines how significant the stroke is. Strokes can range from unnoticeable to devastating to fatal. Most people with atrial fibrillation take medication to reduce the risk of stroke. Eating poorly can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, but most commonly this happens via a different mechanism. High amounts of saturated fat — such as in ribeye steak, which is fattier than many cuts of beef — increase the risk of damage to blood vessels through buildup of cholesterol plaques. These plaques

Avoid Financial Peril After A Job Loss Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more. These strategies can help professionals who recently found themselves out of work avoid financial difficulties. • Get references. Leave on amicable terms and ask your former employer for a reference. You should not burn any bridges, as a good reference can be invaluable as you look for your next opportunity. • Live off of cash reserves first. Before cashing in investments or retirement accounts, tap your emergency fund first. If you have any tangible assets, like an unused car or a boat sitting idle, sell these items for cash to tide you over. • Contact your credit card company. Many companies have programs designed to help customers facing financial hardships. Reach out promptly to let them know you may be anticipating missed payments. It is better if you initiate contact rather than going into default. The same tactic can be used for mortgage or rent payments. • Assess your budget carefully. You naturally will have to make concessions that impact finances, particularly as it pertains to spending. Cut back on non-necessities like dining out, gym memberships, streaming subscriptions, and other luxuries. Avoid adding other new debt. • Apply for aid benefits. There may be government benefits, such as low-cost healthcare or food subsidies, that can help you get through financial difficulties until you get back on your feet. • Involve the entire family. It can be embarrassing to lose a job, but look to family for support. Children may not need to know every detail, but they can have a cursory awareness of family finances and understand they may have to cut back until Mom or Dad is working again. • Prioritize saving. Lightning may not strike twice, but plan ahead for another job loss by prioritizing savings in the future. A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.

Townhouse living is experiencing a resurgence, and many people may be surprised to find how this lifestyle choice fits with their home ownership goals. Townhouses are a great way to get the benefits of single-family living without all of the responsibility of having a detached property — typically at a more affordable price. Realtor.com® indicates that the median prices for townhomes and row homes in the United States in September 2016 was $198,000. Townhomes are now the fastest-growing segment of the single-family housing construction market, according to the National Association of Home Builders, a trade group based in Washington, D.C. According to the most recent data available, townhouse construction was up 17.8 percent between 2014 and 2015. Although various styles of homes and apartments have their pros and cons, townhouse communities have much to offer and can be the way to go for busy professionals or people who live active lifestyles. Here is a look at some of the benefits of living in a townhome. Ownership Unlike an apartment, townhome residents own their homes and the land they’re built on, according to the lifestyle resource The Nest. Spacious square footage Townhouse builders are masters at maximizing interior space through innovative design. Depending on where you live, a simple search on Trulia or Zillow can yield many townhomes that boast anywhere from 1,500- to 3,000-squarefoot townhomes with three or more bedrooms. Maintenance Townhouse communities often collect a maintenance or homeowner’s association fee each month that covers upkeep of the grounds. Depending on the area, this fee may cover the

cost of leaf and snow removal, landscaping and pool maintenance. That gives homeowners more time to relax on weekends. Amenities Many townhouse communities are now designed with lifestyle in mind. Modern townhouses may have tennis courts, resortstyle swimming pools, fitness centers, walking trails, and children’s playgrounds right on the premises. In addition to the parks and fitness areas, many of these communities have common areas and green spaces that enable residents to meet and socialize. This affords townhome residents ample opportunities to socialize. Proximity to town Whether they’re in the city or suburbs, townhouse communities tend to be built in booming areas that are close to trendy towns, shopping, metro hubs, and good schools. Townhomes boast many advantages and should be given ample consideration by prospective home buyers.

How To Avoid and Repair Flat Tires

The Reminder

THE REMINDER

Nothing can delay road trips more suddenly than flat tires. Unfortunately, because tires are the only part of the vehicle constantly in contact with the road, wear and tear is to be expected. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that flat tires and blowouts are a leading cause of highway traffic accidents. Even though flats cannot be prevented, there are ways to make tires less vulnerable and make vehicles safer along the way. Flat tire avoidance Routine inspection and tire maintenance is essential to their performance. In addition, paying attention to road hazards and avoiding them when possible can prolong the life of tires. • Tire pressure: Tires should be maintained at the correct air pressure indicated on the sidewall or as advised by the manufacturer. Tires with too much air can be damaged by bumpy roads and potholes. Tires that are not inflated enough may increase friction on the roadway, resulting in a blowout. Check tire pressure routinely, and do so when the tires have rested for three hours. Many vehicles now monitor tire pressure automatically and alert drivers through a signal

on the dashboard. • Tire wear: The advisors at Select Auto Imports say that inspecting tires for uneven wear should be a routine part of maintenance. If tires show uneven wear, they may be more susceptible to flats or blowouts. Tire rotations can help alleviate uneven wear. The NHTSA recommends tires be rotated every 5,000 miles. • Tire treads: The Allstate Insurance company says to look for worn tire treads. Check for wear bar indicator marks located between the tread pattern of the tires. If the wear bar is level with the treads, it’s time for new tires. Otherwise, place a quarter between the grooves of the tire. If the tread doesn’t extend beyond the top of Washington’s head, it’s a good idea to replace the tires. • Construction sites: Drivers should try to avoid areas under construction. Rocks, nails, metal shards, glass, and divots in the roads can cause punctures and eventually flats. Flat tire repair When flats occur, having the right tools and understanding the procedure for fixing the flat is key. Drivers will need an inflated spare tire, a jack, a lug wrench, bracing material (to keep the vehicle from rolling, such as a brick or piece of wood), and the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Goodyear says it is essential to fix the flat in a safe area away from traffic and on a flat surface. • Use the owner’s manual to find the correct position to place the jack to lift the car. • Remove hubcaps or center covers to access the lug nuts. With the lug wrench, loosen lug nuts in a counterclockwise direction. • Take off the tire and put on the spare. Replace and tighten the lug nuts. Replace hubcaps or covers. • Slowly lower the vehicle and drive cautiously to ensure the spare is in working order. • Purchase a new tire or have a hole plugged or repaired at a tire center.

Relaxing at a spa each week may be a luxury reserved for celebrities and socialites. For many people, a day spa is a treat enjoyed on special occasions or while on vacation. However, home bathrooms can be designed to provide the same types of amenities offered at day spas right in the comfort of one’s home. The American Psychological Association says that money, work and the future of the country are particularly strong stressors today. Eighty percent of workers feel stress on the job and learning how to manage stress is a top concern, according to the American Institute of Stress. Creating a Zen-like retreat at home can help alleviate stress and improve health. Homeowners whose renovation plans include turning a bathroom into a spa oasis will need to choose which features they desire most. These suggestions can spur on more ideas to create the ideal retreat. • Soaker bathtub: There’s something to be said about a luxurious soak in a tub. Tubs come in different sizes and shapes, like the highly recognizable clawfoot tub and other freestanding units. These types of tubs, as well as corner tubs, can offer deep-seated luxury by way of a relaxing and restorative soak. Pair with scented bath bombs or salts for a true spa experience. • Steam shower: Steam showers are self-enclosed units that feature generators that deliver steam through steam heads. The steam fills the space and can help a person unwind before a refreshing shower or bath. According to the retailer Modern Bathroom®, modern steam showers come with digital controls, which makes it easy for users to activate the shower, adjust the length of time that the shower will operate and adjust temperature controls. Extra features like music, mood lighting and aromatherapy can be included as well. • Heated floors: Heated floors provide the utmost in comfort when stepping out of the bath or shower. They can warm the room and make using the space more comfortable in cold weather. • Vessel sinks: A vessel sink typically features a bowl or basin that looks like it was placed on top of the vanity. Vessel sinks can elevate the ambiance in spa bathrooms. • Plush towels and robes: In addition to fixtures and other functional components of the bath, linens are key. Soft-spun Egyptian or Turkish cotton towels and robes are a must-have luxury for the full spa experience. • Comfortable seat: A bench or chair nestled by a bathroom window is the perfect spot for pedicures or catching up on some light reading. • Natural light: Skylights or privacy-ensuring windows are a must to create a relaxing space close to nature. A spa bathroom at home is within reach. With a few touches, any bathroom can be transformed into a luxurious oasis.

Home improvement projects provide homeowners with a chance to put their own stamp on their homes. In addition, many such projects make homes safer and, in some instances, more eco-friendly. The opportunity to make a home more comfortable, safer and/or more ecofriendly entices many homeowners to open their wallets. In fact, the Home Improvement Research Institute estimates that the home improvement products market will grow by more than 5 percent in 2018. Homeowners might experience some sticker shock when researching home improvement projects or receiving estimates from contractors. But there are ways for budget-conscious homeowners to transform their homes and still make the most of their home improvement dollars. • Do your homework. Each year, Remodeling magazine publishes its “Cost vs. Value Report,” a comprehensive study of 21 popular remodeling projects in 149 United States markets. The report notes the value each project retains at resale in 100 markets across the country. Homeowners who want to get the strongest return on investment can access the “Cost vs. Value Report” (www.remodeling.how.net) to see which home improvement projects are best suited for them. • Do some of the labor yourself. Homeowners willing to swing a hammer also can stretch their home improvement dollars. For example, the home improvement resource This Old House® notes that homeowners willing to do their own demolition before the contractors arrive can save substantial amounts of money. A professional contractor may charge $1,000 to demo a 200-square-foot deck, but This Old House estimates that homeowners who demo their own decks may spend only $450 (for the dumpster rental and parking permit). • Hire a consultant. The DIY movement is incredibly popular, no doubt thanks to television channels such as HGTV and the DIY Network. Homeowners with DIY experience may be able to complete projects on their own with little consultation from professional contractors. Some contractors may not offer consulting services, however. The consultation route, which typically requires paying licensed contractors hourly fees to offer guidance, should only be considered by homeowners with legitimate DIY skills, for whom this option can be a great way to save money. • Schedule renovations during homeowner-friendly times of year. Summer and fall tend to be contractors’ busy seasons, and homeowners will likely pay more for projects during this time of year. If possible, delay starting projects until right after the new year, when contractors aren’t so busy and might be more flexible with pricing. Budget-conscious homeowners can employ various strategies to make the most of their home improvement dollars without sacrificing quality.

Expand Living Spaces With Clever Ideas

Homeowners looking to add more space to their homes do not necessarily need to make major renovations. They simply have to see the possibilities in outdoor living spaces. Outdoor living spaces are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable. A recent survey from the online home design and remodeling resource Houzz found that more than 4,500 users were planning a landscape update. In addition, 56 percent of homeowners surveyed were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. While the creation of outdoor living spaces can cost thousands of dollars depending on the renovation, homeowners have more budget-friendly options at their disposal as well. The following are some ways to create inviting spaces no matter how much square-footage is present. Revamp a garage or shed Rather than turning a storage area into a catch-all for items time forgot, clean out the space and put it to better use. For instance, kids may appreciate their own clubhouse away from the main living area. These spaces also can be handy bonus rooms for when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate and backyard guests need to seek shelter. Wall art, curtains, a pendant light, and some comfortable outdoorcompatible furniture can quickly transform a space.

Create a relaxing nook Whether there’s a ledge, overhang, small terrace, or porch off the house, turn it into a relaxing area for reading a book or sipping a beverage. Use a few outdoor pillows, pull up a small folding table and dress the area with hanging lights and potted plants for a quiet retreat. Add privacy to a porch If it’s privacy you covet, install curtain rods and hang lightweight mesh or another translucent material that obscures neighbors’ views without blocking out natural light. Invest in outdoor sofas and chaises to create an outdoor living room right on the porch. If your budget allows, consider closing in the porch as a true threeseason room so it can be used throughout fall, spring and summer. Outdoor living spaces are booming and highly achieveable, and many such spaces need not be expensive.

Decorations help make the holiday season a magical time of year. Stores are awash in color and twinkling lights, and similar imagery is on display in private homes. Designing holiday displays can be a great way for families to spend time together and kick off the celebration. In fact, according to Electrical Safety Foundation International, around 90 percent of Americans decorate their homes for the holidays. When trimming the tree and decorating this holiday season, families must keep safety in mind. A little planning and some precautionary measures can ensure displays are enjoyed all season long. Travelers Insurance offers the following holiday decorating safety tips. • Do not overload outlets. Plan displays according to the number and location of available outlets. • Never exceed the maximum number of light strands that can be attached together. • Use lights and products that have been tested for safety. Certification marks like UL, ETL and CSA are from nationally recognized laboratories. • LED lights should be used whenever possible. Such lights consume less energy and run cooler than other bulbs. • The ESFI says candles start almost 50 percent of all decoration fires. Minimize the risk by using candles only when they can be monitored. Artificial candles can be used in place of real candles. • Check for freshness in live trees. A fresh tree will last longer and is less of a fire hazard than an old tree. • Place Christmas trees at least three feet away from all heat sources, including fireplaces and heaters. • Use decorations that are non-combustible or made from flame-resistant materials. • Pay attention to the age recommendations of decorations to see if they can be used in homes with young children. Some items, however common, are choking or strangulation hazards. • Avoid putting small, “mouth-sized” decorations near the ground or on lower limbs of trees, where young children can easily reach them. • Exercise caution when hanging decorations at high heights. Make sure the ladder is secured and have a spotter who can hold the ladder and pass items up safely. • Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs. • Exercise caution when decorating near power lines that extend to the house. • Keep hung stockings far away from open flames so they do not catch any errant embers. These are just a few suggestions for decorating a safely for the holiday season.

Christmas trees are an iconic symbol of the holiday season. Whether they are personal trees nestled in the corner of a living room for families to enjoy or towering evergreens serving as the focal point of a town square, Christmas trees are a wonder to behold. Many people have fond memories of time spent around the Christmas tree sharing gifts and family traditions. Live trees and their pine-like aroma can be especially nostalgic trees to include in holiday plans. The National Christmas Tree Association says that approximately 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees are sold in the United States every year. North American trees hail from all 50 states and areas of Canada. While freshly cut trees can be particularly beautiful and aromatic additions to the season, they require a bit more work than artificial trees in order to remain beautiful and thrive throughout the holiday season. Maintenance can help keep Christmas trees as perfect as possible. • Even though it is tempting to buy a real tree as early as possible, their shelf life is limited even with the best care. Dural Christmas Tree Farm advises that, under the best conditions, a real tree should last up to four weeks before drying out. • Consider the needles when looking for a real tree. Pull your hand toward your body along the branches. If many needles fall off, the tree is past its peak. • Think about the room in which the tree

will be located. Leave at least 6 inches between the tip of the tree and the ceiling, accounting for the height of the tree stand as well. • If needle retention is a goal, the Scotch pine variety has the best needle retention and a high survival rate, lending to its popularity, offers Precision Tree and Landscape. Douglas fir and balsam fir are other durable trees. • If possible, buy a freshly cut tree from a reputable nursery or tree farm, advises The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Many precut trees sold elsewhere were likely cut weeks before and may not be fresh. • Cut the bottom of the tree trunk before bringing it home to facilitate the uptake of fresh water daily. Trees can absorb as much as a gallon of water in a day, so make sure the tree gets fresh water every day. • Keep trees away from as many heat sources as possible and away from direct sunlight to prolong longevity. • According to Karabin Farms in Connecticut, to make a Christmas tree last longer, boil a gallon of water and then dissolve one cup of sugar in the water. Allow to cool. After freshly cutting the trunk, pour in the warm sugar water. Continue to add fresh, cool, plain water to the tree stand afterward. Once needles begin to fall off with frequency, the tree is reaching its prime. Remove it so it does not become a fire hazard.

Poinsettias are synonymous with the holiday season. These colorful plants brighten up homes with their vibrant hues in variations of red, white and pink, making them a holiday decoration many people cannot live without. While they’re most visible during the often chilly holiday season, poinsettias prefer warm weather. Poinsettias are native to Central America and originally flourished in an area of southern Mexico. The Aztecs used the plant for decorative and medicinal purposes. The poinsettia may have remained a regional plant if not for the efforts of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was the first United States Ambassador to Mexico under President James Madison. Poinsett, who would later found the Smithsonian Institution, had a love of botany and became enamored with the brilliant red plants he saw in Mexico. Eventually, Poinsett began growing the plants at home in South Carolina, and friends and others soon coveted them. Poinsettias are beautiful and the bracts (modified leaves) can be vibrantly colored. That signature vibrancy is why many people would like to preserve their poinsettias to last beyond the New Year, which is possible with the right care. The following are some tips, courtesy of Mother Nature’s Network, Habersham Gardens, Oregon Live, and Phoenix Flower Shops, to keep poinsettias thriving past the holiday season. • Start with healthy plants that have full leaves, bracts

and deep colors. • Poinsettias do best when the temperature is between 65 and 75 F. Temperatures below that or drafts from cold windows can cause leaves to drop. • Position the plant in a room that gets indirect sunlight for at least six hours per day. If direct sunlight can’t be avoided, diffuse the light with a sheer curtain. • Poinsettias need well-drained soil. Overwatering or allowing roots to sit in wet soil can cause the leaves to fall off prematurely. Water thoroughly only when the pot looks dry. In households with temperatures around 70 F, the plant should be watered about once a week. • Fertilize the plant after the blooming season with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer. • Try placing poinsettias in or near a bathroom, as they prefer high humidity. It may be possible to get poinsettias to rebloom next season. Allow the poinsettias to dry out a little more in the spring. In May, cut about four inches from each stem to produce a lush, full plant during the winter. The plants can be moved outside in June and during the summer, but keep them away from direct sunlight. Return the poinsettias indoors beginning around October. Make sure the plants get at least 12 hours of darkness per day for around eight weeks in October and November. This will help them develop a deep hue and bloom on time for Christmas.

• On Dec. 13, 1577, English seaman Francis Drake sets out from Plymouth, England, with five ships and 164 men on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. Three years later, Drake’s return to Plymouth marked the first circumnavigation of the earth by a British explorer. • On Dec. 10, 1901, the first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and other explosives. It is believed that Nobel created the prizes out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war. • On Dec. 14, 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer to reach the South Pole, beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott, by more than a month. Amundsen used sleigh dogs, while Scott employed motor sledges, ponies and dogs. • On Dec. 15, 1945, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, as Supreme Commander of Allied Powers in the Pacific, brings an end to Shintoism as Japan’s established religion. The Shinto system included the belief that the emperor, in this case Hirohito, was divine. • On Dec. 11, 1961, the ferry carrier USNS Core arrives in Saigon with the first U.S. helicopter unit, including 33 helicopters and 400 air and ground crewmen. Their assignment was to airlift South Vietnamese Army troops into combat. • On Dec. 9, 1979, a commission of scientists declares that smallpox has been eradicated. In September I fell in the Walmart parking lot and a woman and a man got me on my feet and to my car. Two days later I had lunch at the Cracker Barrel and a stranger paid my bill. Another day I left my purse in a shopping cart in the Walmart parking lot. About an hour later, I went back to the store not really expecting to find it but some very kind person had turned it in. I’m so thankful for all of them. Anonymous

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be an unexpected change in plans for your upcoming holiday travels. But keep in mind that a little flexibility goes a long way in resolving any disappointments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new relationship might not be responding quite as quickly as you’d hoped. Could you be expecting too much too soon? Try to ease up and let things happen at their own pace. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As we approach the frenetic pace of pre-holiday planning, take time out now to reconnect with the wonderful people who share your life, especially the one who also shares your dreams. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A misunderstanding should be resolved before you get caught up in the flurry of holiday preparations. Set your pride aside and deal with it, regardless of who might have hurt whom first. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being told that a colleague might have been trying to undercut your effectiveness might or might not be true. Get all the facts before you even think about acting on this so-called information. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good idea to start your holiday preparation plans early in order to avoid a time crunch if an unresolved workplace situation causes a problem. That old friend might have some welcome news.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s actions continue to surprise you, but this time with positive results. Could be your wise counsel finally got through. It’s like having an early holiday gift, isn’t it? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your reluctance to act in a current situation could be traced to your inner self advising you to take more time to study its complexities before you attempt to deal with it. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Soothing hurt feelings before they can ignite an angry outburst is the wise thing to do. And, of course, when it comes to doing the “wisdom thing,” you do it so well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Budget your time so that you can handle both your workplace duties and your personal holiday planning — including travel arrangements — without burning out on either end. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might find that you still need to firm up one or two of those still-outstanding decisions so that you finally can move forward as you had planned. Weigh the facts, then act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You usually don’t carry grudges, but you might feel this is one time when you’re justified in doing so. But aren’t you spending too much energy holding onto it? Let it go and move on. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of using your quiet strength to persuade people to follow their better instincts and do the right thing.

Taverns and bars have served as popular gathering places for centuries, and nightspots remain a vital component of nights out today. According to data from the market research firm IBISWorld, in the United States alone, bars and nightclubs generated $27 billion in revenue in 2018. Information from IBISWorld indicates that average annual revenue for the same industry in Canada is $3 billion. Many people like to go out because they know local bars and nightclubs will keep them abreast of new trends. Here are a few things consumers can expect when hitting up a bar or nightclub in the near future. • Organic spirits: Many spirits manufacturers are helping to paint alcohol in a more positive, healthy light. Spirits made from organic cane sugar, non-GMO ingredients and gluten-free grain are just some of the products emerging from those efforts. • Rise of tequila and bourbon: Beer, vodka and wine will always have their place, but bourbon and quality tequila have seen a huge spike in popularity in recent years, states LitAPP, an event and nightlife information service. Another notable spirit is single malt whiskey, which was made popular in Scotland. Single malts are now produced all over the world, according to William Grant & Sons, a family-owned distillery. • Reusable products: Many bar and nightclub owners have transitioned to paper straws, while others are giving out straws only on request. Reusable coasters instead of paper napkins and bare tables (to cut down on linen laundering) also are becoming the norm. Businesses like Trash Tiki, which recycle discarded cocktail fruit into syrups, cordials and other drink ingredients, also are changing how bars and nightclubs handle their excess supplies. • Electric hookahs: Electric hookahs have been on display at the Nightclub & Bar Show in Las Vegas. Electric hookahs feature flavored vapors and give enthusiasts a chance for communal smoking as the law allows. • Charging stations: Running out of phone steam while at a club or bar may have people heading home. But charging stations are becoming the norm and keeping patrons inside. • Emergence of boxed wine: Boxed wine can keep vintages fresher longer, and many businesses are pouring from a box instead of a bottle to reduce waste and keep products fresh. • Multi-concept venues: Multi-concept venues appeal to younger generations who are always looking for new experiences on demand, according to the trends predictor Toast. Fine food, good music, digital entertainment, and more are edging out flashy cocktails and bottle services. Bars and nightclubs are keeping up with the times by offering new services.
