Eating Peanut Butter Cured Her Insomnia DEAR DR. ROACH: Several years ago, I attended a presentation about insomnia. A registered nurse discussed how, in her career as a nursing home nurse, she had many residents with insomnia. She stated that she had amazing success with these residents. The snack they gave them was crackers and cheese or peanut butter crackers. I was skeptical at first, then one night at 2 a.m., on my fourth night of insomnia, I tried eating 2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Bingo! I slept. Whenever my insomnia occurs, I eat 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and in less than 15 minutes I’m sleeping. I use a nothing-fancy store brand of peanut butter. Please pass this information on to other readers with an explanation. — B.J.T. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing to give another option for this common problem. One reason that some people think this may work is that the protein content in peanut butter is a source of tryptophan, which increases serotonin levels to help one relax. I also have read that this effect is so small as to be clinically meaningless, and that any sleep effect is due to placebo. I suspect the truth is a combination. Two tablespoons of peanut butter is almost 200 calories, so this is not a good choice for someone struggling with too much weight. I’m also not one for “fancy, but be sure to choose a peanut butter with no trans fats and no added sugars. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently

recovered from sigmoid colectomy surgery, and I would hate to repeat this, given that I am 75 years old. What are the possibilities of recurrence of diverticulitis for which the surgery was performed? It’s nothing I’d care to undergo again if it can be avoided! — C.K. ANSWER: Surgery for diverticulitis is generally reserved for people with multiple recurrences. The sigmoid colon tends to be the portion of the colon with the most diverticula (small pouches in the wall of the colon that may get inflamed or bleed). Surgery usually is curative, with only 15% of people developing new diverticula and only 2% to 11% needing further surgery. It’s not proven, but most authorities believe that reducing pressure in the colon with a high-fiber diet reduces risk of developing diverticula, either recurrent after surgery or in the first place. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of people whose hair turned white overnight due to some traumatic event. Is there any truth to that? — H.M. ANSWER: The sudden change of hair color is called canities subita. There was a review of literature published in 2013 with 44 well-documented cases of sudden color change, 21 of which were associated with an episode of emotional stress. Think Sir Thomas More or Marie Antoinette before their respective executions. However, while true, rapid, color change is certainly documented, it is exceedingly rare. What probably is more common is the sudden loss of pigmented hair in someone who already has some gray hair. Sudden loss of pigmented hair, in a condition called alopecia areata diffusa, can lead to an apparent color change. Hair lost during chemotherapy or radiation sometimes can come back with a different color or texture. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Potential Passive Income Streams

Home-rental service Popular sites like Vacation Rental By Owner (Vrbo®) and Airbnb put interested parties in touch with potential landlords. Vacation property owners or people who do not spend a lot of time at a primary residence may find this is a lucrative way to earn some extra money. Properties located in popular tourist areas may garner considerable income. Digital products Digital items, such as expert advice guides, books, informational articles, digital photography, digital artwork, and more can be sold online. The product only needs to be created once, and then it can be sold infinite more times to generate an ongoing revenue stream.

Jobs may be how many people earn their money, but there are other ways to generate income that may not require the level of effort of a nine-to-five gig. Passive income streams can be a great way to earn substantial amounts of money. Passive income can be earned through investing in stocks, money market funds, real estate, livestock, or savings bonds. Lending money also can provide passive income. Though such income streams are described as “passive,” they require an investment of time and/or money to get started. Passive income streams enable the average person to make some extra money without taking on a full-time job. Unlike active income, where the more you work the more you earn, passive income often generates a flat level of return over time without the same level of commitment. Passive revenue streams are continually evolving. Modern passive investments are varied, and can include the following ideas.

Peer-to-peer lending According to the financial wellness site MyMoneyWizard.com, peerto-peer lending (P2P) is the practice of lending money to borrowers who may not qualify for traditional loans. P2P is a growing market that removes large financial institutions from the lending process. Lenders serve as the “bank,” and the consumer pays interest on the principal. The loans can be handled through an intermediary like The Lending Club, which is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Real estate investment trusts Real estate investment trusts, or REITs, offer the benefits of being a landlord without the hassle of dealing with fixing broken pipes or handling rowdy tenants. REITs are like stocks in real estate market. You purchase a share in a company that owns, manages or invests in various real estate properties. The higher the dividend rates the higher the risk, so investors must weigh REIT considerations carefully. Passive income streams are another way to earn extra money and can be lucrative for those who take time to invest.

The real estate market will always have its ups and downs, but real estate is an oft-profitable investment. Real estate investors do their investing for various reasons. Some see a house as a place to hang their hats for years and years, while others look at properties as nothing more than investments. Buying a home with the intent to fix it up and resell it is called a “fix and flip.” In such situations, investors buy homes at below-market prices before refurbishing the homes with the goal of recouping their initial investment and then some when the homes are ultimately put back on the market. Flipping has become popular for both expert remodelers and novice investors. RealtyTrac®, the nation’s leading source for comprehensive housing data, noted in its “Year-End and Q4 2015 U.S. Home Flipping” report that 5.5 percent of all single family home and condo sales during the year were flipped properties. This marked an increase from the same time the previous year. Investing in a fixer-upper requires a leap of faith and a vision of what the home can look like in the future. Turning a real estate lemon into lemonade requires certain skills and a good measure of patience. The following are some guidelines to get anyone started. • Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Make an honest assessment of your abilities and which renovations, if any, you can handle. If you are unskilled or inexperienced working with your hands, then it can be easy for an investment property to quickly become a money pit. Before purchasing a property, hire a trained home inspector to tour the home with you and point out all of the areas that will need renovation. With this list, begin getting estimates on how much money the work will entail. Determine if this fits with your budget or not. You do not want to invest so much that it exceeds what you could feasibly recoup when it comes time to sell. • Overlook cosmetic things when visiting properties. Cosmetic issues include all of the easily replaceable items in a home, such as carpeting, appliances, interior paint colors and

cabinetry. Focus on the bones of the house — the architectural integrity and those little touches that you envision having a “wow” factor. • Seek the help of experts. Some flippers think they’ll save the most money by doing all of the work themselves. This isn’t always the case. Professional architects, designers and contractors may help you save money. Contractors have an intimate knowledge of where to buy materials and may be able to negotiate prices based on wholesale or trade costs. In addition, experts can help you avoid common pitfalls because they’ve already done this type of work time and again. It’s smart to rely on expert advice, even if it means investing a little bit more. • Save money by doing some work yourself. While the pros may tackle the more complex parts of a given project, such as rewiring electricity or changing the footprint of a home, you can still be involved. Ask to participate in demolition, such as taking down walls or removing old materials from the home. Such participation may be fun, and it can save you substantial amounts of money on labor. • Recognize that not everything must be completely redone. Realize that, in some instances, a coat of paint and some new accents may be all you need to transform a space. For example, if kitchen cabinets are in good condition, see if they can be refaced or painted instead of replaced entirely. Install new door pulls/handles to add visual interest. Look for some ready-made items, such as bookshelves, instead of installing custom carpentry. • Think about what the buyer wants and not what you want. Renovate with an eye toward prospective buyers’ needs. Keep things neutral and accommodating. Research the latest trends to understand what buyers might be seeking in a home. You want potential buyers to envision themselves moving right in. Renovating a fixer-upper takes time, but it can be a worthwhile project, and one that can help anyone turn a profit in a booming real estate market.

Anyone who refuses is fined. • The deluge of mail around the holidays has been an issue longer than you probably realize. The impression of used cars and trucks has changed dramatically in recent years. Now widely referred to as “preowned vehicles,” such automobiles are now the first choice of many buyers who want reliable vehicles without having to pay full sticker price. While buying preowned vehicles is less risky today than it might have been two decades ago, there is still some risk for buyers who purchase cars that are not brand new. The following tips can help motorists find preowned vehicles that suit their needs and budgets. • Do your homework. Drivers rarely buy brand new vehicles without first researching the makes and models they are considering. Whether they are checking a vehicle’s safety ratings, gas mileage or warranty terms, buyers know that such research is essential to making the most informed decisions. Preowned vehicle buyers should be just as diligent as new car buyers, researching the vehicle’s initial assessments and ordering a vehicle history report to determine if a vehicle they’re considering has been in any accidents and how many drivers have previously owned the car. Buyers also should research manufacturer warranty terms to determine whether the original warranty is still in place or if

they will need to purchase a new one. • Develop a realistic budget. Budgets are important whether buyers are purchasing brand new or preowned vehicles. But while new car buyers can reasonably expect their maintenance costs to remain low for a few years, preowned vehicle buyers, especially those purchasing cars without warranties, should expect to deal with repairs sooner than they would if they were buying brand new cars. Leave some room in your budget for repairs and then look for vehicles that fit your budget. Maxing out your budget could prove disastrous if your car needs repairs sooner than expected, and if repairs are a long way off, you are still saving money. • Make sure you are getting the best price. Preowned vehicle prices may be more flexible than the prices of brand new cars, but it’s still up to buyers to ensure they’re getting the best price. Resources such as Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com) and the Edmunds.com True Market Value (TMV)® pricing tool can help buyers make the best buying decisions. Using such resources is quick and easy and can help buyers quell any concerns they might have about overpaying for preowned cars or trucks. • Insist on a pre-purchase inspection for vehicles not designated as certified preowned vehicles. Before making an offer on a preowned vehicle, buyers should insist on a pre-purchase inspection performed by their own mechanics. Such inspections are not necessary when buying certified preowned vehicles from dealerships because such certifications are only granted when manufacturers or other certifying authorities have inspected the vehicles before they were offered for sale. If private sellers or dealers selling uncertified preowned vehicles resist your efforts to get a pre-purchase inspection, walk away and continue your search elsewhere. Preowned vehicles no longer carry the stigma they once did, and savvy buyers can find great deals on reliable preowned automobiles.

How To Recognize Water Damage In A Home

Homes are potentially susceptible to a host of problems. While unforeseen problems can prove costly, homeowners who keep attentive eyes on their homes can oftentimes discover small problems before they escalate. Water damage is a potentially costly problem that can afflict any home. Old homes tend to be most susceptible to water damage, and that damage can manifest itself in various ways. The following are some telltale signs of water damage that should give prospective home buyers pause and compel current homeowners to seek professional assistance as soon as possible. STAINS Many prospective home buyers have been disappointed by the sight of water stains during an open house or home inspection. Water stains tend to be on ceilings and/or walls. Stains on ceilings tend to be round, while wall stains are straight lines down the wall that may or may not have forced paint to peel. Water stains are not necessarily indicative of a major problem, but homeowners should have the stains examined by a professional while potential buyers should direct their home inspector’s attention to the stains.

DETERIORATING WOOD Wood around windows or doors that is deteriorating may indicate water problems. The wood might be deteriorating because water is infiltrating the wood during storms. Baseboards and molding that is dilapidated or beginning to deteriorate may also indicate water damage. BUCKLED DRYWALL OR WOOD Drywall or wood that is buckled or beginning to buckle is another potential indicator of water damage. Drywall buckles when it gets wet, and that is often a sign that there is a leak behind the drywall. Severely buckled drywall will feel as if it has ridges. Wood also buckles when it is exposed to excess moisture, and this can usually be felt when walking on the wood barefoot or in socks. ODOR Sometimes water damage is best detected by the smell test. Homeowners who notice the smell of mold or mildew in rooms that previously never emanated such odors might have homes that are in the early stages of water problems. The water damage might be behind the walls, where mold is beginning to form thanks to water damage. Older homes tend to be musty, but call in a professional if you notice that mustiness if more pungent than usual. Water damage is a potentially costly problem, especially if it goes unnoticed for months or even years. Homeowners and prospective home buyers should be on the lookout for signs of water damage before problems escalate and require expensive repairs.

Replacing old windows is often a worthwhile investment for homeowners. Energy-efficient windows can prevent heating and cooling loss and keep homes more comfortable throughout the year. Such windows also can improve a home’s resale value, proving a good return on investment for homeowners who want to upgrade their homes before putting them on the market. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, homeowners might find it more cost-effective to replace very old and/or inefficient windows to improve their energy efficiency. Such an upgrade can save homeowners substantial amounts of money on heating and cooling costs. Window replacement projects can be costly, so it pays to get the job right the first time. Before beginning a window replacement project, homeowners should research which windows will meet their specific needs, learning the subtleties between finishes and features, as well as comparing prices for the windows and installation. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME OF YEAR The best time of year to plan window replacement is when the weather will be warm, ideally in the spring or early summer. However, homeowners do not want conditions to be too warm, as each room where new windows will be installed will temporarily be exposed to the elements. Furthermore, caulk adheres better in warmer weather and will dispense easily. CONSIDER AVAILABLE FEATURES When replacing windows, homeowners may want to install the same style windows they currently have. But the problems that led to the need to replace windows may still exist even when new windows are installed.

When replacing windows, consider energy performance ratings based on the locations of the windows in the house. To make sure they make the most educated decision, homeowners can investigate the solar heat gain coefficient, U-factor, visible transmittance and light-tosolar gain. Explanations of these ratings are available at Energy.gov. DON’T IGNORE MAINTENANCE NEEDS Maintenance costs involved with cleaning, repairs and painting can add up. When shopping for windows, consider the amount of maintenance they will need. Wood-framed windows may require more upkeep than aluminum, fiberglass or vinyl. Also, consider if certain window types, such as double-hung windows, casement windows, awning windows, or slider windows, would be practical. KEEP HOME STYLE IN MIND A poor match between windows and the style of the home can produce unwanted changes in the appearance of the home. Replacement windows should match the style and appearance desired. EXPECT MINIMAL DISRUPTION When homeowners hire professionals who are good at their craft, window replacement projects should not be a terrible inconvenience. According to American Window Products, Inc., seasoned professionals will be able to complete a replacement window upgrade in a short amount of time depending on the size of the home and the number of windows being replaced. Replacing windows can be a costly task, but one that will provide a more energy efficient home that can help homeowners save money in the long run.

With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur. To avoid chimney fires and other risks, take these precautions, courtesy of CSIA, HomeAdvisor and Popular Mechanics. • Have chimneys inspected annually and properly cleaned by a professional chimney technician. • Make sure tree branches and other obstacles are cleared away from the top of the chimney. • Use seasoned hardwoods that have been split for several months to a year. “Green” wood creates more creosote. • The top-down method of building a fire produces less smoke. This means using larger pieces of wood on the bottom and the smallest twigs and kindling at the top. The fire will burn from the top and down, igniting the wood beneath as it goes. • Put a cap on the chimney to keep out rain, snow and small animals. • Keep fires small; otherwise, the intense heat may damage bricks and mortar in the chimney. Repair any damage promptly before lighting another fire. • Open the damper and fireplace doors so that air supply flows freely and can vent the smoke promptly, reducing residence time in the flue; otherwise, creosote can form. • Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms throughout the home and routinely check the batteries. Learn more about chimney maintenance and find a certified chimney sweep at www.csia.org.

King Features Weekly Service

As temperatures drop and thoughts once again turn to lighting fires and sitting down with a good book, it’s important to revisit chimney maintenance. Even though chimneys do not require daily upkeep, regular maintenance efforts help chimneys operate safely and prevent deaths and injuries while protecting homes from fire. Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents. Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector. The National Vital Statistics System says that, in 2015, 393 deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen. Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible.

• “Cabbage leaves go limp in freezer, making them easier to roll. This is especially helpful if you are making a big batch of cabbage rolls!” — V.W. in California • Clean and decorate a Pringles chip can to store a collection of colored pencils. Keep the lid on for portability. You can even roll up some plain paper to store inside for an on-the-go drawing kit. • Need to heat up two plates of leftovers? Form the food into a ring (which is better for even heating anyway), then set a microwave-safe glass or mug on the center of the plate. Set the second plate of leftovers on top. • If you can’t paint your dorm or rental apartment walls, here’s some ways to dress up your decor: Try removable stickers from home decor stores or online. Also you can hang a tapestry. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, and if the material is light enough, you can use removable hooks, like Command strips. Or, try creating a pattern with washi tape, which also is removable. • “If you thread a Slinky-type toy onto the pole of your bird feeder, the squirrels can’t get to it. You can usually find these at the dollar store in a plastic version, too.” — C.D. in Ohio • Common substitutions: Recipe call for buttermilk? Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice per cup of milk. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for this New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you.

changing a habit because that commitment helps you follow through. It takes at least 21 days to change a habit. Some things that will help you stay on target with making positive changes include writing down your goal and listing reasons why you want to meet that goal. Encouragement from others also helps us to reach our goals. Tell relatives and close friends about your goals so they can offer encouragement. It may take as little as 21 days to establish a new habit, but it can take much longer to assure that you will sustain it. Prepare yourself now for that time in late January or mid-February when your motivation wanes. When that happens, have a reward in mind for establishing your goal. Knowing there is a reward in sight can get you through rough times.

Depositphotos

Think about how it will be when you establish your goal. If it’s walking 30 minutes per day, think about how much more energy you’ll have and how much better you’ll feel consistently because you have been active. There are very few people who can say making these types of changes is easy. One very important thing to remember is that if the day comes when you have been unable to sustain your new habit, don’t count it as a failure. Just know some days are better than others and vow to re-establish your desired habit. If you’ve resolved to eat healthier, starting with breakfast, try this recipe for breakfast muffins, and have a happy and healthy 2020!

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in order to avoid continuing misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.â€? You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor. Š 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

QUICK AND EASY EGG MUFFINS 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 cup onion, finely diced 2 cups fresh spinach 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 garlic clove, minced 6 eggs 1 tablespoon mild or medium salsa 3/4 cup reduced fat cheddar or pepper jack cheese (or a combination of both), shredded 3 slices turkey bacon, cooked and chopped 1. Heat oven to 350 F. In a saute pan, heat olive oil. Add onion and cook for about 2 minutes. Add spinach, 1 tablespoon of the poultry seasoning, and the salt and pepper, and cook until wilted, about 2-3 more minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Remove from the heat. 2. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, remaining poultry seasoning, salsa and cheese. Add the spinach mixture and the bacon, and stir until well-combined. 3. Either use a silicone muffin pan or spray a muffin tin with non-stick spray. Evenly distribute the egg mixture about 3/4 of the way in each muffin cup. If using a 12-cup muffin tin, fill the empty areas about 1/4 of the way with water. Bake for about 20 minutes or until the muffins have turned a light golden brown around the edges. 4. Store leftover muffins in the refrigerator in an airtight container. To reheat, place in the microwave for about 20 seconds. Makes 6 muffins. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. Her new cookbook is “The Kitchen Diva’s Diabetic Cookbook.â€? It’s that time of year when we think about changes we want to make in our lives. For many people, those resolutions include a vow to eat healthy, exercise and/or lose weight. Before you start thinking about how to make your change and assure it happens, you have to figure out what changes you want to make. Be realistic. People who set a specific goal (I will walk 30 minutes most days) have a much better chance at being successful than people who set a more general goal (I’m going to get in shape). People who make one or two changes at a time also are more likely to be successful than those who try to change everything all at once. Here are some suggestions for habits that can make a positive impact on your health: • Eat breakfast. • Drink three cups of low-fat or fatfree milk every day. • Decrease sodium to no more than 2,400 milligrams per day. • Decrease fat to no more than 30% of your total calories (around 67 milligrams). • Drink 6-8 cups of water per day. • Eliminate or decrease soda. New Year’s resolutions can be beneficial because the name itself sets a date for you to make a change. It’s good to have a date in mind for

A healthy person is born with 270 bones. As a body ages, certain bones fuse together and the average adult will have 206 bones throughout his or her body. More than half of those bones are located in the hands and feet. Bones give the human body its form and are essential to movement and keeping people upright. But bones are not impervious to fractures that can result from illness, age or injury. Surgery may be necessary to repair fractured bones, and orthopedic hardware or implants may be the best way to ensure everything heals as it should. What is orthopedic hardware? Orthopedic hardware or implants are substances that are placed inside or on the surface of the body. The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society states that, in the field of orthopedics, and particularly in regard to foot and ankle surgery, implants refer to hardware that is used to hold bones together, strengthen tendons and ligaments, or attach them to bone. Some implants replace the bone itself. The process of surgical implementation of implants for the purpose of repairing a bone is called internal fixation. Although this technology may seem futuristic, according to the book “Surgery, Science and Industry: A Revolution in Fracture Care, 1950s-1990s,” this type of surgery originated in the 19th century and has been evolving ever since. Common hardware types Implants may be biologic and nonbiologic. Biologic materials are similar to human tissue and strengthen areas. Many operations make use of nonbiologic materials, which can be comprised of titanium, stainless steel and plastics. Among the most common types of medical implants are pins, rods, screws, and plates used to anchor bones while they heal. Wires and nails may also make up an orthopedic surgeon’s catalog of hardware options. Depending on a person’s age and health status, bones can generally take anywhere from six to 12 weeks to heal to a significant degree, advises the Cleveland Clinic. Orthopedic hardware, in addition to casting, can help keep bones in place as they heal. Removal of hardware Orthopedic hardware was once routinely removed after the fracture had healed. Then physicians realized that it is not always easy to remove hardware. As a result, the decision of whether or not to remove implants is now one doctors and patients discuss. There are mixed opinions on whether or not it is necessary to undergo further surgery to have rods or pins removed. Typically, it is a case-by-case decision based on some key criteria: • Severe pain in the area where hardware is located. • Impaired function in the area the hardware helped repair. • Loss of mobility. • Infection in or around the hardware connection site. However, the AOFAS states there is no evidence that the current implants used in orthopedic surgery result in an increased risk of infection. Orthopedic hardware implants are frequently used to help fractures heal successfully.
