SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER
I love preparing a romantic dinner for Valentine’s Day. Cooking is one of the ways I show my love for my sweet husband, Michael. We’ve been married for 45 years, so I’ve had plenty of opportunities to create romantic meals, from breakfast in bed to latenight fireside suppers. What better time to prepare a hearthealthy meal than on the one day of the year that celebrates matters of the heart — Valentine’s Day? My recipe for Roasted Salmon with Pomegranate Butter Sauce is an elegant way to make a special day even more memorable and provides the gift of good health. While 80% of all the salmon sold is farmraised, wild salmon is the best choice. You can choose from a handful of different Pacific salmon, including Sockeye, Pink Coho and King (Chinook). Atlantic salmon also is an option. The U.S. prohibits fishing for it, so the ones you’ll find in American supermarkets are farm-raised. Eating two to three servings per week of foods rich in omega-3 is a healthy choice. A serving of salmon (about 3 to 4 ounces) is about 200 calories. Salmon is low in mercury and saturated fat. It’s a good source of protein, and one of the best sources of vitamin B12, potassium and other nutrients like iron and vitamin D. If you’ve never tried roasted salmon, get ready for a treat. The heat from the oven seals in the flavor of the
ROASTED SALMON WITH POMEGRANATE BUTTER SAUCE
The pomegranate butter sauce is a red variation of the classic French “beurre blanc,” which translated from French means “white butter.” One important tip: Slowly incorporate the butter over very low heat so it softens into a creamy emulsion with the acidic base. If the heat is too high, the butter will simply melt.

tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, chilled, cut into 8 equal portions 1. Heat oven to 400 F. Lightly oil a large rimmed baking sheet. 2. Run your fingers over the cut side of the salmon, feeling for any pin bones. If necessary, pull out the bones with sterilized tweezers. Season salmon on both sides with the salt and pepper. Place the salmon on the baking sheet, flesh side up. Cut the salmon vertically into 6 equal portions, but do not separate the pieces. (This makes the salmon easier to serve after cooking.) 3. Roast until the salmon shows just a hint of bright pink when prodded in the center of the fillet at one of the cuts with the tip of a knife, 12 to 15 minutes. 4. Meanwhile make the butter sauce. Bring the pomegranate juice, balsamic vinegar, orange juice, honey, shallots, rosemary, salt and the pepper to a boil in a non-reactive medium saucepan over high heat. Cook until the liquid is reduced to 1/4 cup, about 8 minutes. Reduce the heat to very low. 5. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in 1 tablespoon of the butter. Whisk until the butter softens into a creamy texture, occasionally returning the pan to the heat to keep it warm, but not hot. Repeat with the remaining butter, one tablespoon at a time. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Do not bother to try to keep the sauce piping hot; it will be heated by the warmth of the salmon. 6. Remove the skin and any fat from the salmon and discard. Serve the salmon on individual dinner plates and spoon the sauce on top. Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. salmon much better than moist-heat methods like poaching or steaming. The pomegranate butter sauce is what makes this dish so deliciously unique. Pomegranate juice is fairly easy to find in most grocery stores, and the flavor marries beautifully with the salmon. My recipe for roasted salmon is a delicious choice for a Valentine’s Day dinner and the perfect way to combine heartfelt sentiments with hearthealthy benefits.

DEAR DR. ROACH: After many years of various treatments, including allergy shots, food studies and an ear tube, I was recently diagnosed with “semicircular canal dehiscence. Can you explain what this is and the treatment (besides surgery) to relieve the symptoms of inner ear pressure, dizziness and pressure and pulsation in the head? Are there any medications? — J.D.W. ANSWER: Semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is an unusual cause of vertigo. Vertigo is sometimes referred to as dizziness, but “dizziness may refer to both unsteadiness (a feeling that you are going to pass out, which medically is referred to as “presyncope) or true vertigo (a sensation of movement when the person is actually still). The vertigo in semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is different from most other causes of vertigo because it can be provoked by loud noises, coughing or sneezing. It is caused by abnormally thin bone in the semicircular canals, part of the organ of balance in the inner ear. The diagnosis is confirmed by a CT scan of the temporal bone. The only treatment I have read that consistently is effective is surgery. An ear tube is sometimes tried in people who have symptoms with pressure changes. Medications used in some cases of vertigo, such as meclizine (Antivert), usually will make SCDS symptoms worse in the long term. Anti-nausea medications like ondansetron (Zofran) may help if nausea is severe, but have their own side effects. Vestibular rehabilitation by a specially trained physical or occupational therapist may have some benefit if surgery isn’t contemplated.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 72 years old. This year he was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. For now, the doctor has inserted a catheter. My question is: What process or what treatment is best at his age? We are in the Philippines. — M.M.C. ANSWER: Enlargement of the prostate gland is a common problem for men in their 70s and older. Sometimes it gets so bad that a man cannot urinate at all or the pressure in the bladder is at risk of damaging the kidney. In those cases, a catheter often is used as a temporizing measure. Unfortunately, a catheter causes inflammation, so it may actually worsen the prostate problem temporarily while still protecting the kidneys. Because of this, the catheter usually needs to be kept in only for about one to two weeks. During this time, medication usually is started to try to reduce prostate size. For most men, a benign (not cancerous) enlarged prostate can be treated with medication — an alpha blocker, like tamsulosin, sometimes with a second medicine, like finasteride. If that doesn’t work, there are several surgical options. His doctor needs to be sure that the enlarged prostate isn’t cancer. A physical exam and blood tests may answer that question; other times, a biopsy is needed. There is no best treatment for everyone. It depends on how large his prostate is, any other medical problems he may have and the expertise of the doctor treating him. In the United States, the options include a traditional surgery, called a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP); laser-based treatments; other heat-based treatments (microwave, water vapor ablation and radiowave); and even more newer treatments that are less well-studied. In general, medical therapy is worth a try for most men before considering surgery.

(NAPS)—With unemployment at a 50year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits. Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments…[and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www. choosework.ssa.gov.

Short Sale Versus Foreclosure
Shopping for real estate may require prospective buyers to learn a whole new language. Buyers may come across certain terms they don’t understand. Among the more common terms that first-time buyers may not fully understand are “short sale” and “foreclosure.” According to Realtor.com, short sales and foreclosure auctions are situations that occur when homeowners fall behind on payments and can no longer afford to live in a home. A short sale happens when a homeowner owes more on the mortgage balance than the market value of the property when the owner needs to sell. The homeowner can ask the mortgage lender to accept a lesser amount than the total mortgage owed — making the homeowner/seller “short” on paying the lender back. A foreclosure is a legal process that occurs when a borrower cannot make mortgage loan payments for a significant period of time. If the debt is not recouped, lenders will step in and take ownership of the property, putting it up for sale in a foreclosure auction. While these situations can be troublesome for the homeowner facing financial peril, distressed properties can be advantageous for buyers who oftentimes can buy homes at steep discounts. However, short sales and foreclosures are not without challenges. The real estate experts at Zillow say that foreclosures and short sales involve more layers than traditional transactions. Zillow offers that bank lenders historically can be slow at giving approval for mortgages to purchase short sale properties or even agreeing on an amount for the sale. As a result, buyers may miss out on other opportunities while waiting for short sales to move along. Foreclosures carry their own hurdles. Buyers may not get a chance to even see a foreclosure property, nor be eligible to have it inspected, as foreclosed homes are typically sold “as-is” and at auction. The real estate agency Re/Max says buying a foreclosure typically is faster than buying a short sale, and an investor can buy a foreclosed home for below market value. But foreclosures cannot be contingent on the sale of another home, so a buyer must have funds in place and be ready to move quickly. Short sales are often initiated by homeowners looking to avoid foreclosure. As a result, short sale properties may be in decent condition. This may not be the case with a foreclosure. The American Society of Home Inspectors says foreclosed homes may have been neglected by having utilities turned off and no maintenance done on the home. Other homes may have been purposefully vandalized by the former owner or by squatters. Short sales and foreclosure properties are options for buyers who want to get the best price possible on a home and are willing to take some risks in their pursuits.

So, who won the fight between IGT and Twin River? You did. The numbers are big. The stakes are high. So it’s no wonder that competition for Rhode Island’s gaming business was intense. But as it dragged on, that competition evolved into something more powerful: collaboration. As we listened to state leaders, taxpayers and each other, we realized the true opportunity wasn’t in taking each other down, but in each of us stepping up. So that’s just what we’re doing. The jobs will stay—over 1,100 good-paying jobs. The investment will grow—$250 million committed to economic development including a bold expansion and reimagining of Twin River. The revenue will be protected—major upgrades to the gaming experience and back-end technology will ensure that the state can count on at least $300 million a year in gaming revenue for years to come. We are two ambitious companies. And while we both took some punches, it was all worth it to know that we will continue to support Rhode Island—the state we and our employees call home—for years to come.
Good Jobs. Great People. Better Deal.

Fiveyear old Natalie, bedecked in pink ballet slippers and a fluffy purple tutu, tugs on her mother’s sleeve and whispers with the awe of a star-struck teenager “There’s Mrs. Sheri! Young Natalie is pointing to Sheri Masiello, better known as “Mrs Sheri, the owner and artistic director of To the Pointe of Performing Arts’ three dance studios. Dancers like Natalie and many, many other ballerina-hopefuls, flock to these studios because of the encouraging and nurturing teaching style which Masiello embraces and expects of her team of instructors and staff. Whether you are five or fifty, in pointe shoes or tap shoes, tutus or leotards, you too can find a place to dance at one of To the Pointe’s three studios. Sheri Masiello has been a dancer since she was herself about 5 years old. Masiello started teaching dance when she was 17 years old and in 1999 parlayed her lifelong passion for dance into her flagship studio on Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston. To the Pointe of Performing Arts is a welcoming, bustling and happy place to be for dancers from ages 18 months through adulthood. To The Pointe offers classes broken down into appropriate age groups. A carefully planned curriculum is designed by TTP’s Director Sheri Masiello who has spent over 25 years cultivating a fun, professional and educational learning plan. This curriculum allows for each level to learn and grow into the dancers and individuals they are meant to become There are classes offered in traditional Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop,

Lyrical, Contemporary and Pointe, as well as Zumba classes. There is literally something for everyone on the full and varied schedule of classes. One of the things that sets To the Pointe of Performing Arts studios apart from its counterparts is that the dancers here do not participate in dance competitions. Instead of working for trophies, the goal here is to build self-confidence and to encourage hard work and dedication. While there is an exciting annual recital where the dancers adorn beautiful costumes and perform choreographed numbers, the emphasis here at To the Pointe of Performing Arts is to give expression to the passion to dance and to give students

Tips For Easy Snow Removal (NAPS)—It’s the heart of winter, which means plenty of snow removal is in your future. Poorly maintained equipment and using the wrong clearing techniques can make shoveling or blowing your driveway and walkways a chore. Follow the tips below to make snow removal as easy as possible. Start Early and Shovel Often It’s easier to shovel an inch or two of fresh snow than half a foot of snow that’s densely packed. Shovel first thing in the morning and, if it continues to snow, go out every couple of hours to clear a few inches at various points throughout the day. Maintain Your Equipment If you didn’t perform maintenance on your snowblower before the winter season, it’s not too late. On gasoline-powered machines, check the oil level before each use. Inspect and change damaged or worn spark plugs, belts and shave plates. On all snowblowers, be sure to maintain proper tire pressure. After you’ve finished for the day, run the machine for a minute or so to clear out snow. Shovel the Right Way Shoveling to remove snow can be hard work, so protect your body and make the job a bit easier by pushing the snow instead of lifting it. To prevent aches and pains, keep your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees, keep your back straight and avoid twisting your torso if you must lift the snow. Finally, spray WD-40 Multi-Use Product on the shovel blade to prevent snow from sticking to it for easier transfer of snow from sidewalks and driveways. Snow shoveling can be easier when you spray your blade to keep the snow from sticking.

VINYL SIDING ROOFING
ment says the old meaning of antique is the legal rule, 100 years old. “Vintage” changes with the item; vintage wine is not the same age as vintage comic books. It is a word that stands for the years between antique and collectible. Several writers say “collectible” means something more than 25 years old. A big auction house recently said it was 20 years. And don’t forget “midcentury modern” goes earlier and later than 1950, sometimes from 1940 to 1975. The birth date of the artist is not a good indication of the age of the object. *** CURRENT PRICES Cut-glass compote, hob star, strawberry diamond and fan and geometrics, teardrop stem, signed, J. Valentine’s Day is an old holiday that started with a Christian martyr, St. Valentine, about A.D. 500, or the Roman fertility fest Lupercalia. In the 1860s, insulting comic valentines called “penny dreadfuls” were sold. A few commercial cards were made by the 1870s from homemade paper, lace and ribbons. By late Victorian times, there were “mechanical” cards with moving parts, embossed cards, cards with “honeycomb tissue” to make them three-dimensional and, by the 1900s, postcards. A beginning collector can find reasonably priced postcards and die-cut cards that were sold in dime stores. Teachers insisted every student receive a card so there would be no hard feelings. Sets sold for 29 cents for 25 cards plus a larger one for the teacher. Each 3-1/2-inch card was punched free of the stiff paper, signed on the back and put in the envelope provided. The cards featured a friendly comic drawing and a heart with a message that often was a pun. Collectors of postcards specialize and look for cards with out-of-town postmarks, city views, jobs, comics or current events or items that were typical of the year and will seem old in the future. Save the cards you get, and ask friends and older relatives for theirs to start a collection. *** Is there a new collecting vocabulary? I remember an “antique” had to be 100 years old, so that means it is anything made before 1919. “Vintage” meant anything too new to be antique but not young enough to be “collectible.” And “contemporary” meant something made recently or even today. We try to use the current vocabulary of the antiques collectors, dealers and even the art world. The Wall Street Journal recently said that “contemporary” art is something made by someone born after 1910. We have to decide what dates to use in Kovels’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide, so we list objects as contemporary if they are made after 1975. The govern-

If the license plate light is out or the plate is otherwise unreadable, drivers may be pulled over. In some states this includes clear or tinted plastic license plate covers. • Loud exhaust system. A defective exhaust system that is too loud, either because it’s been modified or because it needs repairs, can be cause for a ticket. What’s considered loud depends on the state. Many states also require periodic vehicle safety inspections. For an overview by state, visit https://drivinglaws.aaa.com/tag/safetyinspection/. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects favor sorting through your possessions, both at work and at home, to start giving away what you don’t use, don’t need or don’t like. Relax later with someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The issues are not quite as clear as they should be. That’s why you need to avoid getting involved in disputes between colleagues at work or between relatives or personal friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’ll get lots of support from others if you own up to your mistake quickly and include a full and honest explanation. Learn from this experience so that you don’t repeat it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some early confusion over a major move, whether it’s at work or at home. But once you get a full breakdown of what it entails, it should be easier to deal with. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Creating order out of chaos, even in the most untidy spaces, should be no problem for organized Virgos. So go ahead and do it, and then accept praise from impressed colleagues.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Whether it’s for business purposes or just for leisure, a trip might be just what you need right now. You would benefit both from a change of scenery and from meeting new people. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While things generally go well this week, a romantic situation seems to have stalled. But you can restart it if you want to. Then again, maybe this is a chance to reassess the situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A meeting that was promised quite a while back could finally happen. So be sure you’re prepared with everything you’ll need to make your case sound convincing and doable. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace blunder could create a problem down the line unless you deal with it right now to see how and why it happened. Don’t be surprised at what you might learn. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time to re-sort your priorities and see if adjustments are called for. Be honest with yourself as you decide what to keep, what to discard and what to change. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Letting yourself be bathed in the outpouring of love and support from those who care for you will help you get through a difficult period sooner rather than later. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an uncanny gift for reaching out to all people and creating bridges of understanding among them.

Spend Time Alone—It’s not uncommon for couples to struggle to find time to enjoy each other’s company. “Remember,” says Titus, “a couple must retain some degree of independence from their children to maintain an emotional bond.” Wow Her—Go the extra mile. For example, according to a survey conducted by Wakefield on behalf of 1-800-Flowers.com, of the 1,000 women surveyed, over 40 percent (42 percent) of respondents said they would be satisfied if their significant others cooked them a romantic dinner—provided they cleaned up the kitchen after they cooked. Little extras, such as having a thoughtful message engraved in a bracelet or ring, can also express your affection and turn a gift into a keepsake.
