Approve #4: Transportation Infrastructure State Match To re-energize our state’s economy. Creating thousands of jobs in construction and beyond.

The pandemic has been devastating for Rhode Island. Tens of thousands out of work. Businesses struggling to stay afloat. And a severe shortage of tax revenues. An “Approve” vote on Question 4 will provide the $71.7 million Transportation Infrastructure State Match to secure an additional $286.8 million in federal funds. Enabling RIDOT to continue the RhodeWorks program to reconstruct RI’s deficient roads and bridges. While creating thousands of good-paying jobs.

$358 million in crucial improvements. APPROVE For 20 cents on the dollar. The federal government is willing to pick up 80% of the tab. But if the $71.7 million state match isn’t TRANSPORTATION BONDS approved, $286.8 million in federal funds will simply go to other states.

Infrastructure improvements boost the economy and support thousands of jobs.* First, through the direct employment of workers and suppliers in the construction trades. Second, by generating additional jobs when these workers and companies pump dollars into our local and state economies.

APPROVE

Vote “Approve” between now and March 2. Modern infrastructure is the road to economic prosperity. Be sure to vote Approve for Question 4 – by mail, via early voting or on March 2.

A Toast to Your Health One of the best things about writing a food and recipe column is the opportunity to introduce my family, friends and readers to something new. I also enjoy experimenting with new ingredients and products. Recently, I discovered a wonderful line of naturally sweetened, zero-calorie beverages called Zevia. It’s one of the first drink brands focused on healthy versions of sodas (14 different kinds), energy drinks (grapefruit, mango ginger, raspberry, lime and kola), sparking water (lime, blackberry, Mandarin orange and cucumber lemon), as well as a line of mixers, organic teas and Zevia Kidz. So, what is Zevia Kidz? It’s got the fizz of soda and the tangy sweet flavor of juice, but somehow it’s neither. It keeps all the good stuff and leaves out all the bad with zero sugar and nothing artificial. Zevia formulas also are certified non-GMO, vegan, kosher, color-free, gluten-free, keto and paleo-friendly. I served the Zevia Kidz to children ages 3 to 10, and they loved the taste and the colorful Disney characters on the cans. Zevia is the brainchild of founder and CEO Paddy Spence, a key figure in the natural food industry for more than 25 years. Paddy and his wife quit sugar 18 years ago, and since then he has completed in numerous triathlons and marathons. Zevia is the official soda of the CrossFit Games, an event that has banned bigger brands high in sugar content. You can find Zevia at thousands of grocery stores. While Zevia is a healthy and delicious drink, it’s also great as a nutritious, zero-calorie ingredient in drink recipes, snacks, main course dishes and desserts. Use it to create a light, crispy batter for the Zevia Orange Cauliflower Poppers, as the salad dressing base for the Quinoa Salad and to give a wonderful strawberry flavor and sweetness to the batter

ZEVIA ORANGE CAULIFLOWER POPPERS 1 quart oil 1 head cauliflower 1⅓ cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon thyme 1/4 teaspoon rosemary Dash cayenne pepper (optional) 3/4 cup Zevia Orange Soda 1/4 cup Zevia Tonic 2 egg yolks, beaten

1 cup fresh cilantro 1/2 avocado 1 teaspoon garlic Quinoa Salad 1 cup quinoa 1 orange, cut into pieces 1 grapefruit, cut into pieces 1 lime, juiced 1/2 avocado, diced 1/4 cup feta 1/4 cup diced red onion 1. Combine all salad dressing ingredients in a food processor and pulse until consistency is smooth. 2. Cook quinoa and let cool. 3. When cool, add to a bowl with remaining salad ingredients and top with Zevia Orange cilantro dressing. Makes 4 servings.

by Jennifer Coates For some people, the new year may feel a bit like an unwelcome extension of 2020, but for others, 2021 is a time to reboot, refresh, re-energize and be re-vitalized! For some, a year of new resolutions can mean something as simple as sporting a brand-new, updated haircut, and for others, it might mean doing something more dramatic, like mixing things up with a bold new hair color. Sassy. Trendy. Subtle. Classic. The team at Fantastic Sam’s Cut & Color wants to be a part of your 2021 reformation! With their decades of combined experience, the stylists at this professional salon in Coventry can take a boring hairdo and create an eyecatching look that will beguile you and all your friends. They can also be depended upon to just recreate the look that you

have loved all along – as they say, “your wish is their command”! Though it may sound trite, Coventry’s own Fantastic Sam’s Cut & Color can truly be summed up in one word, “fantastic”! Clients who venture into this full-service salon are immediately drawn into a fantastically welcoming, sparkling-clean, sunny and contemporary space that is full of energy and activity. During the shutdown in the early months of 2020, the salon moved across the street into a newlyrefurbished space. The black, red, and white color theme, which is carried throughout the salon, is refreshing and bright. The stylists here at Fantastic Sam’s are all professionals. Some have been cutting, coloring, and styling hair for more than 30 years; all are trained in

Through ‘learning kits’ and virtual internships, students and educators adapt to pandemic’s challenges By DANIEL KITTREDGE and STEPHANIE BERNABA

Lindsey Bratter, a senior at Cranston High School West, has a clear vision for her professional life. She plans to become a child psychologist, with particular interest in working with young children and those with special needs. She intends to head to the Boston area this fall to study psychology – hopefully at Boston College, her top choice. Lindsey’s education in her chosen field, however, has already begun. Since her sophomore year, she has been part of the Educational Pathways Program at the Cranston Area Career & Technical Center, which is housed on the West campus. Her experience has included an internship last year at Meeting Street School in Providence – during which she worked with a teach-

er aide and a student with cerebral palsy – and time working one-on-one with students in the preschool at West. For participants in the Educational Pathways Program, Lindsey said, senior year is an exciting time – a chance for the students to take more direct control over their studies through internships they research and pick for themselves. “This year, which is like the big senior year thing that everybody gets excited for, you get to choose your own internship, she said. But Lindsey’s senior year has proven far from typical due to the pandemic. With social distancing protocols in place and most students taking part in virtual lessons for at least part of the week, the typical opportunities for in-person immersion in an internship have not been possible. That’s where Charlene Barbieri, Sarah Webster and Beth-

any Correia come in. The new director of the Cranston Public Schools Early Childhood Center, or ECC, Charlene spent the previous 18 years as a teacher in the Educational Pathways program. Heading into this year, she saw the challenges this year’s circumstances would pose for educators, senior interns and the district’s youngest learners – and she had some “innovative ideas to do something about it. First came a collaboration between the Educational Pathways students and ECC to create “learning kits for the young learners in the two preschool classrooms at Cranston West and other pre-K classrooms across the district. Charlene said those kits – which include books, materials and learning activities – are designed to help children and their families adjust to virtual lessons whenever full distance learning is needed, as was

the case from mid-December through early January. As Charlene put it, the kits are meant to “make virtual learning creative and give the students the supplies that they would need. Sarah Webster, the educational coordinator for the Early Childhood Center, played a key role in developing the kits, organizing their contents and distributing them throughout the district. Preschoolers are among the students who have typically done five-day in-person instruction under the district’s hybrid approach to school reopening, although Charlene noted: “We have students here in preschool that are both doing distance learning and in-person learning, just like the rest of the district. Bethany Correia, an educator in the Educational Pathways program, said her students also played a role in INNOVATION - PAGE 16

FOLLOWING HER PATHWAY: Lindsey Bratter, a senior at Cranston High School West, is completing a virtual internship this year through the Educational Pathways Program at the Cranston Area Career & Technical Center.

planning the contents of each kit. Among the items included were “file folder games” – materials that are laminated for easy cleaning – and lesson plans for the virtual sessions. Scores of kits were created for distribution to all of the district’s preschool students. Then came then next step in the collaboration fostered by Charlene – new virtual internship opportunities for eight Educational Pathways program students, including Lindsey. “These students were looking to help the community, they were looking to get experience themselves, because that’s why they’re in the program,” Charlene said. “So [Sarah, Bethany and I]

developed some virtual internships.” As part of her internship, Lindsey is working with a teacher in a special needs classroom. She receives assignments from the teacher, helping to plan lessons and activities for the students. It’s a different kind of experience than what she’s done through the program in the past. During her junior year, for example, she led student activities, performed student observations and even took part in parent-teacher conferences. Her senior year internship involves weekly virtual sessions with the teacher, followed by self-directed work carrying out the various assignments. While there are

clear limitations to the arrangement, she said the experience has been valuable. It’s also one she has had a direct hand in shaping. As she put it: “I wanted something that was out of my comfort zone but something that would be very beneficial to me.” “It’s still giving me exposure to the field,” Lindsey said. “Even though it’s not one-on-one interactions with the kids like I would have gotten … it still is a really great experience.” She added: “I just love more exposure to the field and really seeing what a teacher does, because it’s so much more behind the scenes than what you see in the classroom. And I feel like that’s so important … There’s really so much effort and thought that goes into it.” Bethany reflected on the unique process that went into planning the virtual internships. There were a number of questions, and some concerns. Would the internships truly be valuable for the students? Would they be valuable for the professionals who took the interns on? As part of the typical research process the students go through in choosing their internship, Bethany said she urged the students to think about the ways in which they have been well positioned to adapt to the challenges of virtual learning. Professional email writing is typically part of the training for senior students in the Educational Pathways program, she said, and this year they used those messages to prospective mentors to highlight “how they have grown up utilizing virtual platforms for school work and their everyday life.” “[Sarah, Charlene and I were] thrilled that we were able to find enough professionals that could think outside the box and take them on,” Bethany said. “It’s always a job to take on an intern, but if you can do it in a way that’s effective, it’s a benefit to you because you can get some extra help, and then it’s a huge advantage to these kids because they’re getting real-life experience.” Bethany said any concerns

over how valuable the experience would be for this year’s internships were quickly eased. In fact, the response has been even more positive than expected. “I was concerned about how [the students] would feel about it, because they wait all this time to get to senior year, to be able to pick their internship. And I was really worried about the impact that would have on them,” she said. “But they’ve been doing their reflections, and they are just … I can’t even tell you how much they’re getting out of it – how much they’re connecting with the children and the professionals, how valuable they feel the experience is.” She added: “As always, they’re proving that they can handle just about any circumstance and make the best of it.” Bethany said almost all of the Educational Pathways students go on to four-year colleges and universities. The internship experience, she said, “gives them an advantage” as they prepare to make a major investment in their education – allowing them to gain a true sense of whether they are “heading in the right direction.” To Lindsey, the benefits of her internship go even deeper than validating a career

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A personal situation you thought would no longer present a problem could suddenly produce some surprises. Try to sort things out with the help of trusted colleagues. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An upcoming move holds both anticipation and anxiety for Leos and Leonas who have some big decisions to make. Advice is plentiful, but it’s up to you to decide which way you want to go. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone from a previous project could provide valuable guidance on how to handle a current problem, especially where it might involve a legal matter.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business situation presents some unexpected complications. But rather than try to handle them all at once, it would be best to deal with them one at a time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You just might get what you want, despite the odds against it. In any event, be sure to thank all those people involved who believed in you and went to bat for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Before you even hint at an accusation, remember that you’ll have to prove what you say. So be sure you have what you need to back up your comments. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A romantic situation takes an unexpected turn that favors some Sea Goats, but causes others to reassess how they’ve been handling the relationship. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A surprise turn of events could unsettle the Water Bearer. But it also might help open up an entirely different way of working out an important matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A smoothly running operation could bump up against an obstacle. This is where your ability to assess situations and make adjustments can restore things to normal. Make a Bedtime Nightlight

nightlight that your child can make and use. He can even switch it on and off without leaving his bed. Before your child begins making the bedtime friend, have him think about what he wants it to be. An angel? Ladybug? Goofy alien? Leprechaun? Or, maybe a puppy or bunny with felt ears that stick out in funny angles.

Just when it seems your young child has drifted off to sleep for the night, a plaintive voice echoes through the hallway. "Mom! I can't sleep. I think there's a monster in my closet!" So you check the closet carefully.

Jane, 7, shows off a bedtime nightlight that she made with a paper bag, craft supplies and a flashlight. "Nope, honey. No monsters." But it doesn't help much. More drama kicks in. "I want a glass of water ... I can't find my teddy bear ... Will you leave the light on, Mom, pleeeze?" Whether it's anxiety about school, monsters in the closet or navigating the change to daylight saving time, sometimes children need extra comfort to put closure on the day. Well, here's instructions for a very special

Here's what you'll need: — Standard-size brown or plain colored lunch bag — Craft supplies to create your character's face, such as construction or tissue paper, yarn, pipe cleaners, charms, ribbon, glitter, beads, etc. — Scissors — Household glue — Hole punch (optional) — An inexpensive standard-size, plastic, lightweight flashlight with batteries — Rubber band Here's the fun: 1. First, cut out craft foam sheets or poster board in eye, nose and mouth shapes. Cut holes in the middle of the eyes and mouth pieces to eventually allow light to shine through. Glue the features to the front of the bag. When dry, an adult may use small, sharp scissors to cut out the center of the eyes and mouth on the bag. 2. Then add details for personality. Glue on rickrack eyebrows, attach lightweight junk jewelry earrings or pipe-cleaner antennae, depending on what you are creating. Outline lips with shiny beads or glitter. And don't forget the hair — add braided yarn and fashion a style. It's also fun to use a hole punch to make additional features or patterns on the bag that will be revealed when the flashlight is turned on. 3. When complete, carefully slip it over the top of the flashlight and secure with a rubber band, just above the switch. The nightlight will be on and off bedtime duty when you say so! TIP: For older kids, it can be a simple whimsical glow to have on their bedstand in the evening. Or how about using it to light up a tent when camping this summer? Q:

I just watched “News of the World” with Tom Hanks, and he was great as always, but who was the little girl in the movie? How old is she in real life? She was really good, and I could see her being around on screen for years to come. — A.G. “News of the World,” which was released in theaters and via video-on-demand, is a post-Civil War era film directed by Paul Greenberg. Hanks’ character makes his money by reading the newspaper to townspeople as he travels throughout Texas. Along his journey, he finds an orphaned girl, played by Helena Zengel, and the two ride through treacherous territory, in more ways than one, to rehome her with her mother’s relatives. Zengel is 12 years old. She caught the attention of Greenberg with her lead performance in “System Crasher,” which earned her the German equivalent of a best actress Oscar. She speaks her native German, but had to learn the language of the Kiowa people in “News” since her character was raised by the Native American tribe after her parents were murdered. “News of the World” was filmed around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is based on the 2016 novel by Paulette Jiles. I suspect you’ll be seeing much more of Zengel in the years to come. She’s never had an acting class and really held her own against the seasoned Hanks and other strong actors in the film, including Mare Winningham (“The Affair”) and Elizabeth Marvel (“Law & Order: SVU”). *** What happened to teen singer Brandy? Is she still around? I never hear about her anymore. — F.A. In yet another confirmation of the cliche “time flies,” teen singer Brandy is 41 years old! She won a Grammy at age 19 for her duet “The Boy Is Mine” with singer Monica, and also became a TV star with her hit sitcom “Moesha” on the UPN channel. However, her fame had already been solidified when she attended Kobe Bryant’s high-school prom as his date.

Q: A:

Brandy has had her share of ups and downs. She was in a car accident in 2006 and has battled severe depression, but decided to seek help for the sake of her daughter, Sy’Rai, who is now 18. Brandy also has a new album out, her first in eight years, titled “B7.”

Q:

Is there going to be another season of “Riverdale” on Netflix? If so, when? I hope we don’t have to wait too long. — G.G. The new season of “Riverdale,” its fifth, premiered Jan. 20. The first three episodes were originally intended to cap the end of season four, but due to the pandemic, they weren’t able to complete last season’s scripted episodes. According to TVGuide.com, the new season will begin by wrapping up the teens’ senior year of high school, with their prom and graduation. After that, the writers have figured out a way for the group to return to town in a storyline that will launch the remainder of season five.
