Thanksgiving Novena to

Law Office of

ST. JUDE

O Holy St. Jude Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ. Faithful intercessor of all who invoke this special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and three Glory Be’s. Publication must be promised. St Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. It helped me. Thank you St. Jude for answering my prayers.

Show your sweetheart how much you care with this delectably decadent but suprisingly fun sundae-inspired dessert bar — complete with whipped cream and a cherry on top. 18 (2½-inch) chocolate graham crackers 4 cups sugar- and fat-free vanilla ice cream 1 (4-serving) package sugarfree chocolate cook-and-serve pudding mix 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 cup water 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons reduced-calorie margarine 1/2 cup miniature marshmallows 3 tablespoons chopped pecans 1/2 cup reduced calorie whipped topping 4 maraschino cherries, halved 1. Arrange 9 graham crackers in a 9-by-9-inch cake pan. In large bowl, gently stir ice cream until slightly softened. Coarsely crush remaining 9 graham crackers and stir into softened ice cream. Spread mixture gently over graham crackers in cake pan. Cover and freeze while preparing topping. 2. In medium saucepan, combine dry pudding mix, dry milk powder and water. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract, margarine and marshmallows. Drizzle hot mixture evenly over ice-cream mixture. Sprinkle pecans evenly over top. Re-cover and continue to freeze for 2 hours or until firm. 3. Let set at room temperature for 10 minutes. Cut into 8 servings. To serve, top each with 1 tablespoon whipped topping and a maraschino cherry half. Makes 8 servings. • Each serving equals: 191 calories, 3g fat, 7g protein, 34g carb., 199mg sodium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Starch/Carb., 1/2 Fat.

• If you store nail polish in the fridge, it will dry more quickly and last longer. • “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” — G.G. in New York • As tax time draws ever closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all tax-related forms and receipts in the envelope as they come in. This way, when you are ready to start your taxes, all items will be together and easy to find. • “To help moisten really dry feet, slather on lotion, wrap feet in plastic wrap, then slip on some socks overnight — or for as long as you can stand it.” — B.H. in Michigan • “My no-iron tip: I toss the wrinkly garment into the dryer for about five to 10 minutes with a damp washcloth, and it steams most wrinkles out. It won’t look starched and pressed, but it’s good enough for casual wear or running-late mornings. I haven’t ironed in years.” — E.W. in Florida • Don’t forget to clean your washing machine every so often by running it on the highest-temperature cycle empty after adding a gallon of vinegar. This will clean out the hoses and get rid of stuck-on detergents. • To remove soot from your carpet, sprinkle it with salt, let sit and then vacuum. A “trick” to make your required minimum distribution tax free Jeffrey H. Massey Certified Financial Planner™ Massey and Associates, Inc.

As the year 2022 rolls out, it is important to review your IRA accounts and determine if they are structured to avoid potential pitfalls due to the Secure Act of 2020. Also, there are specific opportunities to help you lower your overall income tax based on IRA Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs). The first concern would be if you have named a trust as a beneficiary of your IRA accounts. If you have done so, please reach out to your financial advisor and/or the attorney that drafted your trust documents. Due to the IRA changes introduced by the Secure Act which mandates the entire balance of an IRA must be drained by the end of the 10th year starting the year after death of the account holder, using a trust may no longer suit your original estate plan. (https://www.forbes.com/ sites/juliejason/2021/12/14/confused-bythe-new-secure-acts--10-year-rule-forinherited-iras/?sh=4d7650fb5d04, n.d.) It is best to review this to ensure that you are helping maximize the benefits to your heirs. If you are, or will become, age 72 this year, this will be your first year of RMDs from your IRA account(s). A little side bar, IRA actually means Individual Retirement Arrangement. Many people think the “A” is for account, not so. Here is a tax planning suggestion. Please keep in mind that before taking any action you should discuss this with your CPA or CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional that focuses on tax planning opportunities, especially when dealing with IRA accounts. If you are charitably minded and have been taking your RMD then contributing to a charity, consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD is paid directly from the IRA account to the charity. The charity must be an official charity under the IRS tax code. Your charity will know if they are or are not, so check with them first. (The age rule for QCDs remains at 70 ½ even though the RMD age changed to 72.) (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/ how-the-cares-act-changes-deductingcharitable-contributions, n.d.) The beauty of using the QCD, especially in the early part of the tax year, is that the QCD satisfies a portion, or all, of your RMD for that tax year. Here is an example. Let’s say that your RMD is $20,000 for this tax year. You have been generous with your favorite charity by donating $10,000 throughout the tax year to them. By

contributing this way, you technically are claiming the entire $20,000 as taxable income, then taking a $10,000 deduction. One of the downsides of this is that your adjusted gross income is $10,000 higher than if you contributed

that $10,000 directly from your IRA to the charity via a Qualified Charitable Distribution. QCDs are income tax free distributions from your IRA account. Additionally, based on your entire

tax situation, if your itemized deductions are not greater than the standard deduction, you are losing out on some, or all, of that charitable donation. There is a charitable cash contribution that an individual can take, which is $300 and a married couple filing jointly can deduct $600 even while using the standard deduction. However, by utilizing the QCD, it serves to keep your adjusted income lower, which may have other benefits, such as avoiding the Medicare Part B surtax if your income reaches a certain level. In 2022 that income amount is $91,000 for a single tax filer and $182,000 for a married couple filing jointly. (https:// www.irs.gov/newsroom/how-the-caresact-changes-deducting-charitable-contributions, n.d.) If your income isn’t at that level, then there are other potential benefits of reducing your income via a QCD, such as potentially lowering the amount of your Social Security income that is taxable. Back to the RMD issue. If your RMD is $5,000 and you donate that $5,000 directly to a charity via the QCD, then your RMD, in essence, becomes tax free as the QCD dollars count towards the RMD. The QCD in this example must be paid to the charity prior to any other distribution. Here is an important rule to consider. According to the IRS rules, the first dollars out of your IRA go towards satisfying your RMD. Here is how NOT to do this. If you were to take $5,000 out of your IRA (assuming that is your RMD), then later in the year, you decide to use the QCD to contribute to your favorite charity, the initial $5,000 distribution is fully taxable as your RMD. You would have lost the opportunity to reduce your income tax while satisfying the RMD. I realize that this can be a bit confusing and technical. If you are unsure if these tax ideas are right for you, please call to meet with one of the advisors on our team, the meeting will be complimentary. Is it too late to reduce your Mortgage payment by refinancing?

StatePoint

Experts say that with mortgage rates beginning to rise, refinancing your home now might be your last best chance to lower your monthly mortgage payment, as rates remain near all-time lows. Those who refinanced early in 2021 have already reaped the benefits. Borrowers who refinanced their 30-year fixed rate mortgage into another 30year fixed rate mortgage during the first half of 2021 saved over $2,800 in mortgage payments on principal and interest annually, according to a recent Freddie Mac research report. But mortgage rates are rising. Indeed, in October 2021, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, which is the most common type of mortgage, rose to its highest point since April, surpassing 3.0%. Freddie Mac forecasts that mortgage rates will continue to rise, averaging 3.5% for the 30-year fixed in 2022. That’s up from an average of 3.0% in 2021. So is it time to refinance your home loan? To help you make an informed decision, Freddie Mac is offering answers to commonly asked questions about the refinancing process: • What does refinancing mean? When you refinance your mortgage, you’re applying for a new mortgage to replace your current one, which will result in a new rate, term and monthly payment. The most common type of

© Chris Ryan / iStock via Getty Images Plus

refinance is a no cash-out refinance, in which you’re refinancing the remaining balance on your mortgage. • When should I consider refinancing? Generally speaking, refinances make the most financial sense when average interest rates are at least half a percentage point lower than the interest rate on your current mortgage. Another reason to consider refinancing is if your financial situation has improved, allowing you to secure a loan with a shorter term and own your

home sooner. Finally, if you currently have an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) and it’s adjusting upward, you may wish to convert to a fixed-rate mortgage that provides you with the security of consistent payments. • Is refinancing free? Although refinancing your mortgage could save you money both in the long- and shortterm, it isn’t free. For the most part, refinancing costs are similar to what you paid when you purchased your home, including a loan origination fee. There

are required services involved, such as appraisals, and state and local fees that can vary significantly based on where you live. The average cost to refinance is almost $5,000, so you should carefully consider how long you plan to stay in your home to ensure the savings to outweigh the costs. • Who should handle my refinance? You don’t have to use your current lender to refinance your loan. In fact, it’s in your best interest to shop around and compare multiple lenders’ loan estimates in search of the best terms and cost. It may take more time, but even a difference as small as onequarter of a percentage point can save you thousands of dollars over the life of your home loan. The good news? Rates are often negotiable. In other words, you can ask lenders to match the rate quoted by another lender. There may be no time like the present to lock in the lowest possible rate and receive the highest monthly savings. To get a sense of what refinancing could save you, access Freddie Mac’s refinance calculator, along with additional homebuying and refinancing resources, at myhome.freddiemac.com. As with any big financial endeavor, you’ll want to do your homework, look carefully at your short- and longterm goals, and work closely with your lender to do a cost-benefit analysis.

RhodyMoney The cost of waiting to save for retirement Patience is a virtue, but waiting can be costly in regard to saving for retirement. A 2019 report from the Economic Policy Institute found that nearly half of families have no retirement account savings at all. Individuals who have delayed saving for retirement could find themselves in difficult situations as they near retirement age. Assuming an 8 percent rate of return on money deposited into a retirement account like a 401(k), an individual who begins depositing $6,000 annually at age 20 will have roughly $1.7 million in that account in 40 years. By waiting until age 40 to begin making the same an-

nual contributions and assuming the same rate of return, an individual would end up with less than $300,000 in his or her retirement account at age 60. That’s a sizable disparity and one that could make the difference between a comfortable retirement and one plagued by financial difficulties. Catch-up contributions allowable by the Internal Revenue Service can help men and women over 50 build their retirement savings. However, the most effective way to save for retirement is to begin early and to continue doing so throughout adulthood.

The Gazelle furniture line springs from midcentury modern

Artist Dan Johnson (1918-1979) designed furniture for many companies with the midcentury modern look. He worked in Rome and California, and designed a number of lines of modern furniture, especially chairs and tables, for Danish and U.S. companies. Johnson often used thin, patinated metal, iron or aluminum for arms, legs and seats, and added caning or fabric upholstery. All of his designs looked lightweight, but a chair with a bronze or iron frame is heavy and hard to shove into place at a dining-room table. One of his most famous designs was the Gazelle line designed in Rome and then sold in the U.S. He used metal parts patinated “Pompeian Verde,” a green color that was inspired by the excavations at Pompeii. The pictured Gazelle bronze and cane chair, made in the 1950s, was estimated to be worth $4,000-$6,000 recently. Lines made for other companies were similar, including maple furniture made in 1947, Viscount made in the late 1950s of brass and ivory or nickel and walnut or other combinations, and Satyr made with thin shapely legs. They were made by Arch Industries, Selig and others. *** We were given a 10-inch sterling silver “Revere bowl” as a wedding gift in 1948. It’s in good condition with a liner (which I added). Can you tell me what it’s worth? Revere Silver bowls have been popular wedding gifts for years. The simple shape with slightly flared lip is based on the “Liberty Bowl,” which was made by Paul Revere at his silver shop in Boston in 1768. Revere bowls have been made in silver plate, sterling silver and pewter by many different makers. The value of your bowl depends on the silver content. Solid silver (sterling) is worth at least the price of the silver it contains, the meltdown value. Silver plate is worth less because it contains less silver. A well-known maker adds value. Recent

Lily James plays the legendary Pamela Anderson in “Pam & Tommy.” Jackass Forever (R) — This is exactly what you would expect from the “Jackass” franchise: exploding port-o-potties, vehicle jump stunts gone awry, failed attempts at bull riding and sucker punches to the gut (and worse), all perpetrated by dudes who are now pushing 50. And it’s way funnier than it should be. Something about Johnny Knoxville’s constant guffawing at his cohorts’ pain is totally infectious, making this sequel fun to watch. Steve-O, Chris Pontius and Wee Man also return, as they still haven’t learned to stay away from the pain. If you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough. (Paramount+) Suspicion (NR) — A thriller centering on the kidnapping of a media mogul’s son, “Suspicion” is an Apple original starring Uma Thurman as the grieving mother/mogul. Four British tourists, who seemingly have no connection to the teen or his mother, are arrested as prime suspects and must prove their innocence while simultaneously trying to deduce why they were targeted for arrest in the matter. With every conversation, suspicion of each other intensifies. (Apple TV+)

Pam & Tommy (TV-MA) — I know what you’re thinking: “Why this? Why now?” It’s been over 25 years since Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s private honeymoon love tape was stolen by a disgruntled house worker and thrust upon the world. We all know how the story panned out, how the couple turned the tables on the thief and ultimately regained ownership AND the profits from its distribution. But what is not as wellknown is the chain of events from the perspective of the idiots who masterminded the heist. Seth Rogan and Nick Offerman star as those greedy fools, while Lily James and Sebastian Stan take on the title roles. (Hulu) The Legend of Vox Machina (NR) — An animated, adult-oriented, high-fantasy series based off a popular livestream game on Twitch (a gamer content platform) called “Critical Role.” The cast is made up of voice actors from various video games and other animation series, including Matthew Mercer and Ashley Johnson. This project, which originated with the voice actors playing “Dungeons & Dragons,” was the highest-grossing Kickstarter for an animated series in history, so anticipation for its release is stellar. The show is campy, funny and violent, but still heavy with character development. Twelve episodes in Season 1, and a second season has already been greenlit. (Prime Video) Cheer Season 2 (NR) — Currently trending is the return of the surprise hit of 2020 documenting the perennial national champion cheerleading squad from Navarro College. Coached by Monica Aldama (a “Dancing with the Stars” alum), the show takes an honest approach, addressing how the exposure and fame of Season 1 affected individual team members and the squad as a whole. Of unfortunate inclusion is the federal arrest of one team member on child pornography charges. Regrouping, Aldama

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Temper that Aries impatience. Demanding answers or results before they’re ready to be revealed could create more delays. Take time out for fun with family or friends. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Someone involved in your latest venture makes new demands that you find disturbing. While you dislike being a quitter, it might be best to drop this project and move on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A decision could involve more serious implications than you first thought. Get more information and seek the counsel of trusted friends before you sign or say anything. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good time to reconsider some of your plans, especially those involving major investments of money and/or time. Expect to hear from someone in your past. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Love continues to dominate for both single and paired Lions. In the workplace, deal with a co-worker’s thoughtless comments before they cause problems later on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might be angry enough to end

a friendship because of something you were told. But consider the source of the gossip before you act. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your career move seems to be stalled. Request a meeting to discuss the situation. It will be a learning experience for everyone involved. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That important relationship is about to move to a new level. Continue to be patient, and resist pushing it even further. It still needs time to blossom. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Paired Sagittarians do very well at this time. However, some challenges loom for single Archers who are considering stronger romantic commitments. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Be patient. A misunderstanding is close to being completely resolved, as new facts emerge that will help change those stubborn minds. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A change in a personal relationship reveals some long-hidden truths. Your challenge now is to use this new information wisely for all concerned. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Draw on your deep reserves of good Piscean common sense to avoid taking the lure from someone who thinks he or she can get the best of you. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a remarkable ability to make friends with strangers. This allows you to command an army of devoted admirers. © 2022 King Features Syndicate, Inc.

Training Your Dog for Hiking Season DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 1-year-old puppy, Corky, is an energetic mutt who loves to be outside. I started hiking last year, before I adopted Corky, and I plan to do lots more hiking trips when the weather gets warmer. I want to bring Corky along, but I’ve read mixed advice about dogs on trails and at campsites. What’s your take? — Ellen in Boulder, Colorado DEAR ELLEN: You can definitely take Corky along! Preparation is key: You must prepare Corky for the hike, and you need to research the trails before departing to find out important information, including: — Are dogs allowed on the trail? — What are other rules about pets on the trail? — How long is the hike you’re planning? — How far can Corky reasonably walk? — Is water available along the trail, or will you need to carry extra for your dog? — How good is Corky’s behavior training — will he come to you as soon as you call? When I’m on a hike, I follow Leave No Trace rules — which also apply to dogs, so be prepared to carry out his poop — and another set of rules I call “Annoy No Other Hikers.” Included in this personal set of rules are a few dog-specific ones: — Keep my dog on a leash during the hike, especially on popular trails. — Clean up after my dog. — Make sure to carry adequate water, food, first aid and safety gear (such as booties and vest). — Keep my dog under control when greeting oncoming hikers. Not everyone is thrilled by dogs, and a jumping, out-of-control dog does the community no favors. Find more training and hiking tips at the American Hiking Society (americanhiking.org/resources/hiking-with-dogs/). Pick up dog gear advice at Reckless Roaming (recklessroaming.com/howto-hike-with-your-dog/). And Chewy has some good all-around tips as well. See you on the trail!
