Netflix has two seasons of “Heartland” being shown in worldwide markets, but has not released them in the USA. Can you investigate as to why the delay in the U.S.? — P.S. I think a lot of people are becoming impatient for another batch of Canadian “Heartland” episodes. Fortunately, there may finally be some good news. In the New and Popular section of Netflix, under the subsection of Coming Next Week, “Heartland” was one of the series listed. So although Netflix has not confirmed it as of this writing, it appears season 12 and perhaps season 13 will be available for streaming on Netflix in the U.S. starting Feb. 1. Season 14 recently premiered in Canada. Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@gmail.com, or write me at KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Mediterranean Diet Stands the Test of Time

In the early ‘70s, Goldie Hawn hosted a few specials. I seem to remember Laurence Olivier appearing on one where he sat on a staircase and recited something. I would love to know what it was. I hope I am remembering correctly. Any help you can give is appreciated. — B.J.S. I found four TV specials hosted by Goldie Hawn: “Pure Goldie” (1971), “The Goldie Hawn Special” (1978), “Goldie and Liza Together” (1980) and “Goldie and Kids” (1982). Unfortunately, I couldn’t find Sir Laurence Olivier as a guest on any of them, but my sources might be incomplete. I even checked YouTube.com for clips of Olivier on TV. There’s a wonderful one of him reciting Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116 (“Let me not to the marriage of true minds ...”) as a guest on “The Dick Cavett Show.” In Hawn’s specials listed above, Ruth Buzzy and Johnny Carson were guests on the first one; George Burns, Shaun Cassidy and John Ritter were guests on the second; Ron Field and Larry Grossman appeared with Goldie and Liza (Minnelli); and Barry Manilow is listed as the only adult guest on “Goldie and Kids.” If anyone else out there remembers Olivier reciting some kind of monologue on a staircase, please write me at newcelebrityextra@gmail.com, and we’ll get to the bottom of this mystery. *** Whatever happened to actress Stephanie March from “Law & Order”? She was married to one of the famous chefs on The Food Network, but I haven’t seen her in anything since “L&O.” — F.D. Stephanie March is best known as ADA Alexandra Cabot on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” She’s played the role on and off over the years and also in its short-lived spin-off, “Conviction.” She married chef Bobby Flay in 2005, but divorced him 10 years later. She remarried in 2017 to investor Dan Benton. You can see March in the upcoming Beyond the Headlines Lifetime TV

The Mediterranean diet is in the news again, not only because it’s the start of a new year, but also because it was named as one of the most popular and healthiest diets by several publications. The origins of the “Mediterranean diet” are lost in time because it’s based on the eating habits of the Middle Ages, in which the ancient Roman tradition — on the model of the Greeks — identified in bread, wine and oil products a symbol of rural culture and agriculture. These were supplemented by sheep cheese, vegetables (leeks, mallow, lettuce, chicory, mushrooms) and a little meat, and among Romans, a strong preference for fish and seafood. According to a National Center of Biotechnology Information article, the discovery of the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet is attributed to American scientist Ancel Keys, who researched the correlation between cardiovascular disease and diet for the first time. In the 1950s, Keys was struck by a phenomenon, for which he could not, at first, provide a full explanation. The poor population of small towns of southern Italy was, against all predictions, much healthier than the wealthier citizens of New York, many of whom had Italian ancestors who emigrated to the United States. Keys suggested that this depended on food, and tried to validate his original insight, focusing on foods that made up the diet of these populations. This study proved that populations that had adopted a diet based on the Mediterranean diet presented a very low rate of cholesterol in the blood

and, consequently, a minimum percentage of coronary heart disease. This was mainly due to the plentiful use of olive oil, bread, pasta, vegetables, herbs, garlic, red onions and other foods of vegetable origin, and a rather moderate use of meat. The modern Mediterranean diet is characterized by the emphasis on plant foods such as grains, vegetables and fruits. Olives, olive oil, nuts, beans, legumes, seeds and herbs/spices are also part of the Mediterranean eating style. The Mediterranean lifestyle also recognizes the importance of physical activity and social interaction at mealtimes. Grains should be mostly whole grains and can include whole-wheat breads, whole-wheat pasta, oats, brown rice, couscous, quinoa or barley.

Depositphotos

Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, frozen or canned. The nutrients are similar between the three forms. Canned vegetables can have more sodium, so rinse before using or buy lower sodium options. Fruits and vegetables can be cooked or eaten raw. Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean eating style. Olive oil is the main source of fat and is used in cooking, as salad dressing, as a light drizzle on vegetables or as a dip for bread. Olive oil is higher in heart-healthy unsaturated fats and should replace saturated fats like butter or margarine. Nuts, beans, legumes and seeds are the main sources of protein, healthy fats and fiber. Common beans include chickpeas (garbanzo beans), cannellini beans, kidney beans, lentils and black beans. Nuts are good as a snack, on a salad or added to other dishes. Herbs and spices add flavor and aroma to foods. They reduce the need for salt and can be rich in health-promoting antioxidants.

This delicious baking-pan recipe for Salmon Roasted with Broccoli and Tomatoes is an effortless way to incorporate the Mediterranean diet eating plan into your lifestyle.

SALMON ROASTED WITH BROCCOLI AND TOMATOES 1

pound fresh or frozen skinless salmon fillet 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons Italian or poultry seasoning 1½ teaspoons salt 1½ teaspoons black pepper 2 cups grape or cherry tomatoes 2 cups broccoli florets 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 lemon 2 tablespoons snipped fresh basil and/or parsley 1 tablespoon honey 1. Line a 15-by-10-inch baking pan with parchment paper. Rinse salmon; pat dry. Place salmon in prepared pan. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of the oil and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of the Italian or poultry seasoning, and 1 teaspoon of the salt and the pepper. 2. In a medium bowl, combine tomatoes, broccoli, garlic and the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil, the Italian or poultry seasoning, and the salt and pepper; toss to coat. Place in pan with salmon. Roast 15 to 18 minutes or just until salmon flakes. 3. Meanwhile, remove 1 teaspoon zest/peel from the lemon (do not use the white flesh or pith) and squeeze 3 tablespoon juice from lemon. In a small bowl, combine lemon zest and juice, the basil and/or parsley, and the honey. Spoon the mixture over salmon and vegetables before serving. TIP: To thaw frozen fish, place in a sealed bag and submerge in a bowl of cold water for 30 minutes. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. The last year has been challenging for social butterflies, as the COVID-19 pandemic has limited opportunities to socialize in person with close friends and family members. Social distancing guidelines affected various holidays throughout 2020, but such guidelines were issued after Valentine’s Day 2020. Valentine’s Day may be the easiest holiday to celebrate while still adhering to social distancing restrictions. After all, Valentine’s Day is typically a day to spend time alone with the person you love. The following are seven socially distant Valentine’s Day celebration ideas. 1. Order a take-out dinner for two from a favorite local restaurant. It gives you the night off from cooking and helps support a small business. 2. Watch a romantic movie on your preferred streaming service. 3. Treat each other to a pair of cozy pajamas and spend the day under the covers catching up on cuddles and rest. 4. Bundle up and, if weather allows, take a hand-in-hand stroll through a park or favorite sightseeing spot. Just follow any protocols for remaining safe, such as wearing masks. 5. Those who reside in climates that are mild in February can rent a small boat and enjoy a few hours on the open water far away from others. 6. Purchase the ingredients to a recipe you both enjoy and prepare the meal together. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert. 7. Take turns giving one another back massages at home. These are just some of the ways Valentine’s Day can be enjoyed safely while adhering to pandemic-related safety guidelines.

Diet and heart health go hand in hand. The American Heart Association notes that a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight cardiovascular diseases, which the World Health Organization says kill more people across the globe each year than any other disease. Men and women do not need degrees in nutrition science to create heart-healthy diets for themselves and their families. In fact, the familiar calls to “eat your fruits and vegetables” many adults recall from childhood lessons or nights around the family dinner table still bear weight today. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is a hallmark of a healthy lifestyle. And supplementing such a diet with other heart-healthy foods is a great way to reduce one’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Fruits and vegetables The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that fruits and vegetables are healthy whether they’re fresh, frozen, canned, and/or dried. The AHA advises eating fruits and vegetables with every meal and snack, and that may require a little creativity as you sneak them into favorite dishes. For example, the AHA suggests replacing half the ground meat in recipes for burgers, meatloaf or meatballs with cooked chopped mushrooms. The mushrooms can be finely chopped with a knife or food processor, and then sautéed in some olive oil until they’re soft. They can then be mixed in with the lean meat, and the meal can be cooked as it normally would. At the breakfast table, add fruit to a bowl of cereal to make for a more flavorful morning meal. Dairy products When purchasing dairy products, the DHHS recommends sticking to fat-free or low-fat options. Replace whole milk with fat-free or 1 percent milk and buy only fat-free or low-fat cheese. When snacking, reach for fat-free or low-fat plain yogurt or cottage cheese. You can even add fruit or vegetables to such snacks to make snack time even more heart-healthy. Proteins Healthy proteins are another way people can

promote heart health with their daily diets. When choosing proteins at the grocery store, the AHA recommends choosing chicken and fish over red meats. That’s because red meats, which include beef and lamb, have more saturated fat than chicken and fish. Saturated fats increase blood cholesterol levels and can worsen heart disease, while the unsaturated fats in fish like salmon can actually reduce the risk for cardiovascular issues like heart failure and ischemic stroke. When preparing poultry, remove the skin, as most of the saturated fat in poultry is found just beneath the skin.

Grains When buying grains, the DHHS recommends reading the ingredients list on the package before purchasing. Make sure whole wheat or another whole grain is the first item listed in the ingredients list, and choose only those products that say 100 percent whole grain. Instead of preparing white rice as a side dish, serve brown or wild rice, quinoa or oats. A heart-healthy diet is easy to design and just as flavorful as less healthy alternatives.

The different types of bird feeders Birds are big business. That may come as a surprise to people who have never given much thought to the warm-blooded vertebrates who fly over their heads every day, but tens of millions of people have a passion for birds. A 2016 survey from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service found that more than 45 million people in the United States watch birds around their homes and away from home every year. While statistics aren’t as current in Canada as they are in the United States, past studies have indicated birding is wildly popular among Canadians, with roughly 30 percent going wildlife-viewing while on out-of-town trips of one or more nights. That positively affects the economy, contributing billions of dollars to the tourism industry in both the U.S. and Canada every year. While birding trips can help birdwatching enthusiasts see birds they otherwise may never see in person, bird feeders can be a great way to bring more birds into your own backyard. Choice of bird feeder can affect just which birds come to your back yard, and the following are some bird feeder options for birding enthusiasts to consider. • Window feeders: Small and easily attached to windows with suction cups, window feeders are easy to maintain and bring birds right to your window. Birds that visit window feeders stand in the seed while feeding, so they must be cleaned and refilled on a daily basis. • Tray or platform feeders: The online birding resource All About Birds (allaboutbirds.org) notes that tray feeders attract the widest variety of seed-eating feeder birds. That makes them ideal for birding enthusiasts who want to

attract a variety of birds to their properties. Tray feeders are simply platforms that hold seed and provide a place for birds to stand while they eat. All About Birds recommends tray feeders with screened, rather than solid, bottoms, as these trays promote complete drainage. Frequent cleaning is necessary with tray feeders, as bird droppings can quickly soil seed. • Hopper or house feeders: These feeders are enclosed and feed seed out through the bottom. Hopper feeders are great for people who don’t want to be bother with daily maintenance, as they can hold several pounds of food at one time, greatly reducing the number of times homeowners will need to refill them. In addition, hopper feeders don’t need to be cleaned as often as other feeders. However, All About Birds notes that hopper feeders, which need to be thoroughly cleaned roughly once per month, are harder to clean than other feeders. • Tube feeders: Tube feeders deliver seeds to birds through screens or ports. Small perches attract birds to tube feeders, making these ideal for small birds. Some tube feeders contain perches designed for birds that can feed upside down, potentially attracting a greater variety of birds to your backyard. But All About Birds notes that seed can collect on bottom-most feeding ports, providing a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. As a result, tube feeders should be inspected and cleaned regularly. Bird feeders can draw an array of birds to your backyard.

I miss the sparkle of it all, especially during these long, dark, winter days when I need an extra push to get outside for a charge of energy. While it will take many weeks to pick up more hours of daylight, I'm all for tricking my mind into thinking it's spring, even when it's not. If you are on the same mission, think "perky" with these easy tips and tricks

to brighten your home and sweep away the "blahs." Find new uses for everyday items: You and your kids can create a bright arrangement on your kitchen counter or table. First, pick up a bouquet of the springiest of flowers, tulips! Let the kids trim the stems and arrange them in a bright container. How about a teapot? It doesn't have to sit on a stove all the time, after all. Think toys, too. A bright-yellow truck can haul a fresh new mini pot of growing ivy into the arrangement. Set a few packets of 2021 veggie seeds in the cab as a reminder of outdoor gardening fun on the horizon. Clear the clutter and move things around: Get rid of stuff that's no longer used or useful. Give away and recycle books, old and broken toys and furniture. While you are at it, rearrange beds, desks and bookcases together in your kids' rooms. What child doesn't love the feeling of waking up the next morning to a new look? It's also refreshing on the eyes to move living-room and family-room furniture. Do it while the kids are at school, and watch their eyes pop when they walk in the door. Wash windows: This one sounds like work, but it's worth it. Grab squeegees, newspaper and rags to scrub and wipe away the grime. It's amazing how looking through a clean window will brighten everyone's day! *** Find more family fun and recipes at www.donnaerickson.com. Animals, Not Men Suffer Irritable Male Syndrome DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there such a thing as irritable male syndrome, similar to PMS in women? If it is real, does it cycle yearly or monthly? My husband is negative and blames others for things at some times more than others. Also, is there a cure or ways to manage it? — Anon. ANSWER: The term “irritable male syndrome” was coined in 2002 in a review of animal behavior, among male animals with a strictly seasonal breeding pattern. After mating season in these animals, testosterone levels drop markedly, and the animals exhibited symptoms of nervousness and irrationality. In humans, low testosterone has a set of common symptoms, including low libido and low overall energy. Loss of body hair and decreased muscle mass happen after prolonged time without testosterone. Psychiatric symptoms, such as depressed mood and anxiety, are less strongly tied to low testosterone levels. Most experts do not believe that the findings in animals are analogous to what healthy men experience. While it is possible that your husband has low testosterone, and that this level may be causing a degree of irritability, it is much more likely that his behavior has a different underlying cause than loss of testosterone. By contrast, premenstrual syndrome, where there are dramatic shifts in hormones, is clearly associated with mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depression. As the hormone changes are cyclical, so the symptoms are cyclical as well. No such cycles exist in men for testosterone.

I have certainly known many irritable males, however, and anybody can be more irritable one day compared with another. I would note that, especially in men, irritability and being easily angered can be a sign of depression, among many other possibilities. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 73-year-old man who has always had a large prostate. Thirty years ago, my urologist described it more like the size of an orange rather than a walnut. Despite its size, it has never given me any problems — no UTIs, sudden urination, poor stream, waking me in the middle of the night, etc. Despite not having symptoms, about 10 years ago I was prescribed finasteride at a dose of 5 milligrams, and Rapaflo to “try to keep it in check.” In 2018 I had an ultrasound done of my prostate, and it was measured at 185 grams. It was measured again recently and is now 232 grams. My PSA is always in the 3.2-3.5 range. At what point does a prostate get too large? Should I be concerned even without having any symptoms? To his credit, my urologist discussed my surgical options, along with the related side effects. I am reluctant to do anything if it’s not necessary. — J.J. ANSWER: The normal prostate gland is about 20 grams, and only 4% of men will develop a prostate over 100 grams. Yours is well past that, though far short of the world record of 2,410 grams. It is striking that the size of the prostate does not well correlate with a man’s symptoms. Since you have no symptoms and a low PSA level (especially considering the size), there is no indication to do anything surgically. The risk of surgical complications is higher in men with very enlarged prostate glands, so I would certainly be cautious about considering surgery. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Affordable features to consider when revamping your kitchen Kitchens are popular gathering spots in many homes. That popularity is reflected in various ways, including how many homeowners choose to remodel their kitchens. A 2019 report from the home renovation and design resource Houzz found that kitchens were the most popular room to renovate in 2018. Homeowners considering kitchen remodels should know that the Houzz report also indicated that spending on kitchen remodels increased by 27 percent in 2018. Homeowners concerned by the cost of remodeling a kitchen should know that there are ways to give kitchens a whole new feel without breaking the bank. Appliances Consumer Reports notes that luxury home buyers expect high-end features, including professional ranges and built-in refrigerators that match the surrounding cabinetry. However, many mainstream brands offer “faux pro features that can equal more expensive alternatives. Consumer Reports even notes that many budget-friendly faux pro appliances outperformed their highend counterparts in terms of reliability. Countertops Countertops tend to capture the eye’s at-

tention when walking into a kitchen. Outdated and/or damaged countertops grab that attention for all the wrong reasons, while updated countertops made from today’s most popular materials provide that wow factor homeowners seek. If granite is a must-have, Consumer Reports notes that homeowners can save substantial amounts of money by choosing granite from remnants at the stone yard. If marble is your ideal countertop, save money by choosing a domestic product as opposed to one imported from overseas. Cabinets Custom-built cabinets may be a dream, but they tend to be a very expensive one. Such cabinets are designed to adhere to the dimensions of the kitchen, and Consumer Reports notes that they can cost tens of thousands of dollars. If that estimate would bust your budget, examine the current layout of the existing cabinets. If the layout is fine but the cabinets need work, you can give them a whole new look by refinishing them. If the cabinets must go, stock units or semi-custom cabinets can provide a new look without busting the budget. Kitchen remodels can be expensive. But there are many affordable ways to revamp a kitchen.

• On Feb. 20, 1792, President George Washington signs legislation renewing the United States Post Office as a cabinet department led by the postmaster general, guaranteeing inexpensive delivery of all newspapers, stipulating the right to privacy and granting Congress the ability to expand postal service to new areas. • On Feb. 21, 1885, the Washington Monument, built in honor of America’s revolutionary hero and first president, is dedicated in Washington, D.C. Three years later it was opened to the public, who could climb to the top of the monument by stairs or elevator. By District of Columbia law, it remains the tallest building in the nation’s capital. • On Feb. 18, 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces the winners of the first Academy Awards, which were printed on the back page of the academy’s newsletter. A few days later, Variety published the information — on page seven. • On Feb. 19, 1945, the U.S. Marines’ invasion of Iwo Jima is launched. When the American flag was finally raised atop Mount Suribachi, the image was captured in a famous photograph that later won the Pulitzer Prize. • On Feb. 15, 1965, in accordance with a formal proclamation by Queen Elizabeth II of England, a new Canadian national flag is raised in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The search for a new national flag began in 1925. • On Feb. 17, 1972, the 15,007,034th Volkswagen Beetle rolls off the assembly line, breaking a four-decade record held by the Ford Motor Company’s iconic Model T. The VW Beetle dates back to 1930s Germany. • On Feb. 16, 1984, Bill Johnson becomes the first American man to win an Olympic gold medal in downhill skiing, a sport long dominated by European athletes. Johnson quickly became a national hero, but never again competed in the Olympics.

Planning for an enjoyable retirement As we progress into the new year, now is a good time for new beginnings with the best of intentions. At this time of year, it’s often common to think about resolutions and ways for improvement. Losing weight and getting organized are surely popular themes, but some may involve getting your finances in order or more specifically planning for your retirement. Perhaps you’re like me. When I prepare to go shopping for groceries, I make a list and check each item off to ensure I get what I need. When I travel, I make a list of things I need and places I want to see, and I check each item off to make the most of my vacation. Checklists are often good reminders for us all and a retirement checklist may help you to stay on track and achieve your retirement goals. Why not be prepared as best you can for your retirement? After all, it’s a pretty important time of your life! One that you’ve worked so hard, for so many years to achieve – so why not plan for it and make your retirement one to enjoy! Retirement planning is a multi-step process that can start at the onset of your career and can evolve over time just as you, your career and your life evolve over time. However, sometimes life gets busy and retirement planning might not start as early as it could or should have. It’s never too late to get started, so let’s look at a quick retirement planning checklist to help you along the way. Lifestyle Expenses: We believe that one of the best ways to plan for retirement is to

start by determining your current lifestyle expense. A simple way to do this is to look at your current monthly lifestyle expenses, and depending on how many years you are from retirement, making adjustments and estimating how they may change in retirement. For example, will your house be paid off when you retire so your expenses will no longer include a mortgage payment? Have you factored expenses for future inflation? We offer a one-page Income Gap Assessment worksheet that can help you determine your annual lifestyle expense. Simply go to your monthly checking account statement and record on the Income Gap Assessment worksheet the total dollar amount of the checks you wrote that month. My bank includes all debit card usage in that total, if yours does not, just add it in the column for debit/credit cards. It is very important to take information from each month of the year. It is important to do a 12-month cycle to ensure capturing any annual expenses. Also, you should deduct any “one-time” expenses and we encourage clients to include annual travel/vacation amounts to help budget for an enjoyable retirement. Most of our clients tell us this takes about 15 to 20 minutes to accomplish; not bad to establish the foundation of your retirement plan. Determine how to take advantage of the many ways to save for retirement: There are many retirement savings vehicles to choose from to save for retirement. There are workplace retirement savings

programs such as 403bs (for non-profits), 457s (for state or municipal employees), and 401K’s (for public and private companies). One of the cornerstones of retirement planning is determining how much money to save and where to save it. Workplace retirement plans such as those listed above, allow elective deferral amounts for the 2021 tax year of $19,500, if you are under age 50 and $26,000 if you are age 50 or over. If you or your spouse don’t have a workplace retirement plan, you may open an Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) for each of you (even if only one is working) depending on income amounts and tax filing status. IRA contribution limits for 2021 are $6,000 if you are under age 50 and $7,000 if you are age 50 and over. Another very important item in your retirement planning is your healthcare coverage. Determine and evaluate your options for healthcare including individual and family needs, level of care you can afford and where it will come from. Whether it is Medicare at age 65, or spousal healthcare benefits, military – VA benefits, retirement packages and supplements that may cover healthcare until Medicare age may be available sources and very important in helping you decide when to retire. Often times, having to wait until age 65 when Medicare health insurance benefits are available is one of the more important determining factors as to when to retire. To help alleviate this crunch, it may be very helpful to fund Health Savings Accounts (HSA’s) (if available) over the preceding years before retirement to help bridge the health insurance gap until Medicare eligibility at age 65. HSA individual coverage contribution limits are $3,600 and family coverage contribution limits are $7,200 for 2021. There are specific requirements for eligibility for a Health Savings Account, so, check with your employer’s Human Resource manager for the details. This next topic is very important and can be very confusing. Maximize your Social Security Benefits – it’s important to know what your monthly social security retirement benefit amounts will be for you (and your spouse if applicable) at various ages. We recommend setting up an account on SSA.gov. It may take a little time to work through the challenge questions like knowing what bank financed your first automobile, etc., but once you get through - it’s worth it! Also, knowing that Social Security Administration is trying to protect your identity by asking these questions is commendable. You should obtain your social security retirement benefit estimates for age 62, your Full Retirement Age (FRA), and Age 70. The FRA of 66 is for those born in 1954 or before. The system adds 2 months for each year of birth starting in 1955 up to 1960. For those born in 1960 or after, your full retirement age is 67. These Social Security benefit amounts are estimates based on your earnings record over your work history that includes the highest 35 years of earnings projected out to the various retirement ages. If you do not have 35 years of earnings, you will have some zeros in your calculation which will reduce your benefit amounts. Social Security inflation adjusts your older annual amounts to today’s value then takes the highest 35 years of earnings to calculate your benefit amount. Your last year of reported earnings is assumed to be continued until your retirement ages; 62, 66-67, or age

70, which may or may not be the case. It is important for you to know what your anticipated Social Security retirement monthly benefits will be to help you determine how much more you may need in your savings/ investment accounts in order to retire and cover your living expenses. In addition to your Social Security, you should total all expected income from all various sources including monthly pension benefits if available, annuity payments or investment income expected from all available sources. Determining a reasonable rate of drawdown is important for long term sustainability of your investments. We often discuss the importance of reducing risk in your investments as you get closer to retirement. It is important to understand the level of risk that is in your investment portfolio and understand how that level of risk may affect the value of your retirement portfolio given increasing and decreasing market conditions. Identifying the level of risk in a portfolio is a key part of any good retirement plan. There are various software programs that we use to determine your level of risk. If you would like to access a risk assessment tool, you can go to our web site and click on the “What’s your risk number” box. That will take you to the software, where in less than 5 minutes, working through the questions, you will get a risk score. That is a good starting point. The next step is to have your portfolio evaluated to determine the risk level of your portfolio. Then compare your score with the score of your portfolio to see how close they are. The closer the scores the better it is. If those two numbers are too far apart, then a portfolio adjustment would be prudent. Needless to say, this is a lot of information to absorb, so, consider working with a professional advisor, preferably a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional. You can find a local CFP® by going to www.cfp.net and click on the “find a CFP® professional” button in the upper right corner. Here’s what business owners need to know about Second Draw PPP Loans By Jeff CasCione Senior Vice President Commercial Lending Navigant Credit Union What’s old is new again. Just under a year after Congress unveiled the $349 billion Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) as part of the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a new version of the PPP is back in the headlines. Known as the Second Draw Paycheck Protection Program, this is a $284 billion initiative aimed at supporting small businesses that have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This new program could provide local small businesses with much-needed relief as they continue the long process of navigating and recovering from these unprecedented times. As the small business community starts exploring their options related to this program, here are a few frequently asked questions we are hearing from our members at Navigant Credit Union. Am I eligible for a Second Draw Paycheck Protection Program loan? The short answer: It depends. While the first wave of Paycheck Protection Program funding was made available to any small business that meets the SBA’s size standards, this next wave of funding is a bit more restrictive. In order to be eligible for Second Draw PPP loans, small businesses must: 1) have 300 employees or fewer on their payroll; 2) have already exhausted (or have plans to exhaust) their first PPP loan; and 3) be able to demonstrate a revenue loss of at least 25 percent between comparable quarters, or annually, in 2019 and 2020. The thought process behind these eligibility restrictions is to ensure businesses that have been hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic can access their share of the program. How large of a loan can my business secure? Second Draw PPP loans are capped at $2 million per borrower (for context: The original PPP loans were capped at $10 million), and – for most applicants – the loans are equal to 2.5X their average monthly payroll costs. For businesses operating in specific industries designated by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), the loans may increase to 3.5X average monthly payroll costs. How can I use my Second Draw PPP loan? Funds secured through this new installment of the PPP have similar restrictions as the original. In order to be eligible for full forgiveness, at least 60 percent of the total amount of the loan must be used to cover payroll costs, including paid sick leave and other benefits for employees. Borrowers may also use PPP funding to cover fixed operating costs such as mortgage, rent and utilities, or to purchase personal protective equipment, covered property damage costs, cleaning supplies or other items the business needs to reopen amid the pandemic.

Are nonprofit organizations eligible for Second Draw PPP funding? Yes – and the list doesn’t stop at nonprofits. Provided they meet the aforementioned eligibility requirements, Second Draw PPP loans may be available to self-employed individuals, independent contractors, sole proprietorships, housing cooperatives and many other organizations. How do I apply – and how quickly do I need to move? To apply for Second Draw PPP funding, eligible borrowers need to work through the processes implemented by their accredited lender or financial institution. For example, at Navigant Credit Union, our process is conducted virtually 100% online. Our goal is to make these applications as simple as possible so that our members can focus on what they do best. The application period for Second Draw PPP loans launched on January 13, and the deadline is currently set for March 31. As somebody who has been helping Navigant Credit Union members process these applications for the better part of a year, my best advice to local small business owners who are eligible for this round of funding is to start as early as possible. What documents do I need to provide? Stop me if you’ve heard this before… but, it depends. Businesses applying for loans of $150,000 or less can typically apply for funding with a simple, one-page certification document that details their size, their need and their current financial situation. When you’re applying for loans greater than $150,000, the list of required documentation gets longer, and can include profit/ loss statements, tax returns, articles of incorporation, payroll reports and photo IDs for anyone with a significant ownership stake in the organization. If I’m applying for $150,000 or less, should I gather all of my documents anyway? Yes, absolutely, and unequivocally, yes. Think about this process as if you were going to the DMV to get your license renewed. Do you really want to sit and wait only to be told to come back with the proper paperwork? Even if you don’t need a laundry list of financial documents to secure your PPP loan, it is likely you’ll need to provide them during the loan forgiveness process, which is still being developed in Washington. Plus, having these documents at the ready is simply a good habit for small business owners to pick up. Jeff Cascione is the senior vice president of commercial lending at Navigant Credit Union. Entertainment Tasty tidbits about pizza The calendar is dotted with various holidays that celebrate pizza. From National Pizza Pie Day in February to National Deep Dish Pizza Day in April to National Cheese Pizza Day in September, not to mention National Pizza Month in October, any time of year is the perfect opportunity to bite into a slice. For most people, the best part of pizza is eating it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still learn something about this alltime favorite food as well. The following are some tasty tidbits about pizza, courtesy of Fact City, Pizza Need and Facts Legend. • Pizza is tied to Greece. Greeks are credited with creating the first pizza-like food. The Greeks used to bake flat, round large breads that were then topped with vegetables, potatoes, spices, and olive oil. However, the first commercial pizza and pizzeria has been traced to the 19th century and the Italian city of Naples. • Not all pizza is flat. While crispy, low-profile pies may be classic, other varieties of pizza have their fans. “Deep dish” pizza originated in 1943 in the Chicago eatery Pizzeria Uno. Sfincione, or focaccia pizza, a type of pizza made in a sheet pan with thicker slices, was created in the mid-19th century in Sicily. It is popularly called Sicilian pizza. • Pizza is even more popular on certain days of the year. Pizza can be enjoyed any day of the year, but Super Bowl Sunday, New Year’s Eve, Halloween, Thanksgiving Eve, and New Year’s Day are the top five days for pizza sales. In addition, pizza accounts for more than 10 percent of all food service sales. • Pizza is booming. In the

United States, the pizza industry makes up 17 percent of all restaurants and grosses more than $30 billion every year. The highest-grossing single-unit independent pizzeria in the United States is Moose’s Tooth Pub and Pizzeria in Anchorage, Alaska. Its annual sales are approximately $6 million. • Pizza is popular everywhere. Around the world, about three billion pizzas are sold each year. • Pizza is a weekend favorite. While Friday may be pizza night for many people, sales figures indicate that Saturday night is the most popular night to eat pizza. • Pizza has a symbiotic relationship with certain foods. The pizza industry has helped propel both the cheese and pepperoni industry. Around 251 million pounds of pepperoni are consumed each year in the United States. • Hawaiian pizza is popular, though not accurately named. Ham and pineapple are popular pizza toppings on the West coast of the United States, and this pizza is dubbed the Hawaiian pizza. However, it doesn’t have any connection to Hawaii.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Accept the fact that you are worthy of being loved, and you’ll find proof in what is revealed to you over the course of the week. Also accept a compliment offered with great sincerity.

This pizza actually was invented in Canada. Pizza is a perennial favorite and one of the most popular foods of all time.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) St. Valentine’s Day magic rules the entire week for romantic Rams and Ewes. Music, which is the food of love, is also strong. The weekend offers news both unexpected and anticipated. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your aspects favor the arts — which the Divine Bovine loves, loves, loves. Also, for those looking for romantic love, Cupid is available for requests. After all, his mother, Venus, rules your sign. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Loving commitments continue to grow stronger. Ditto budding relationships. A recent move to help start-up a new career-linked direction soon could begin to show signs of progress. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Single Moon Children might be eager to take that proverbial chance on love. But your more serious side will feel better if you take things slowly and give your moonstruck self more time. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a love fest for Leos and Leonas this week. Paired Cats might expect to be purr-fectly in sync. And with matchmaking friends, single Simbas searching for romance shouldn’t have too far to look. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) More understanding on both sides can work miracles in restoring ailing relationships to health. Make the first move, and you’ll be closer to your much-wanted reunion.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Planning to take a new direction in life is exciting. And so is a new awareness of someone’s special affection. Expect a slow and mostly steady development of the situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although you might still feel you weren’t treated quite right in a recent matter, all that will work out in time. Meanwhile, enjoy the week’s special qualities and potentials. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Deciding not to give up on a troubling romantic situation helps start the healing process. Expect to find some valuable insight into yourself as things move along. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The week is filled with positive potentials, but it’s up to you to make the right choices. The advice of someone who truly cares for you and your well-being can be priceless. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to make yourself available to possibilities of the romantic kind. Already paired? Good. In that case, be sure to reassure that special person of your feelings. BORN THIS WEEK: Your generosity gladdens the hearts of others, and you bask in their joy. © 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Did you know?

Flowers can have sentimental value, particularly those received as gifts or those that were part of momentous occasions, like weddings. Fresh flowers have finite life spans unless measures are taken to preserve the blooms. The flower experts at ProFlowers say pressing flowers can preserve them for years to come. While flower lovers can invest in a flower press, other heavy objects also can be effective at pressing flowers. Start by choosing flowers that are either still in bud form or are freshly bloomed. Dry the flowers out as quickly as possible to prevent browning. Place

the flower between two pieces of white, nontextured paper. Then place all within the pages of a book. Depending on the size of the book, you may be able to press more than one flower at a time. Place other books on top to weigh down the book with the flowers inside. Change the moisture blotting sheets every few days. After two to three weeks, the flowers will be completely dry and flat. Remove the flowers carefully using tweezers or fingertips. Store the fresh flowers in a cool, dry place or consider framing them in a shadow box.

(Never known to fail). O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the sea, help me and show me here in, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times.) Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you. Grateful Thanks. L.C.H.
