• File this one under safety AND energy smarts: Clean the dryer vent after every load. Clean the dryer vent screen monthly with a gentle soap and water bath. Rinse well and dry thoroughly before inserting back into your dryer. • I used to struggle with plastic wrap every time I tried to use it. But now, it’s a breeze since I learned to do these two things: One, keep plastic wrap in the freezer. It unrolls evenly, not one side or the other. Two, use a serrated knife to cut it instead of relying on the metal strip down the side of the box. You lay it out on the counter, and just run the knife down the edge you want to cut. Works like magic, and it’s no longer frustrating. — G.S. in Georgia • Store an apple or two with your potatoes to keep them from sprouting. Be sure to check them often. • Cut cotton pads in half to double your supply. They are typically big enough for two uses, and you can always use two halves if you need a whole. • “Make a cream lipstick last longer and stay cleaner by using a makeup brush to apply. Your skin picks up more of the lipstick than necessary, one reason why we blot our lips afterward. But the brush uses only what you need. And there’s less bacteria transfer.” — Y.R. in Massachusetts • Studies have shown that you spend more and make worse decisions when grocery shopping at peak hours. The Ancient Art of Paper Cutting Scherenschnitte is a paper cutting art form. It was known to the ancient Chinese and others, and it became popular again in the early 1800s, especially in the Pennsylvania area. A group of the pictures were sold at folk art auctions in New England about 2011 to 2019. They often pictured a spread-wing eagle with lacy trim. Each was signed “G.B. French.” They were described as the work of an artist working in the early 1800s. Other folk art theorems and watercolors were part of his signed work. Most were mounted in frames about 15 inches by 22 inches with painted corner blocks. We were surprised to learn that the scherenschnitte was made in the 20th century. The earliest we have heard about was sold in 2013. There are contemporary artists making and selling pieces that are made of plain paper or are cut paper pictures with added paint. But we have not learned who G.B. French was. The old schnerenschnitte pictures sell for about $500 to $800, but the piece pictured here and identified as 20th century brought only $40 at a Hess Auction Group sale. *** I have a 45 rpm record by the Ink Spots that has been autographed by each member. Is it worth any money? The Ink Spots, an American jazz singing group, started performing under that name in 1933. The group recorded for Decca Records from 1939 to 1953. The members of the quartet changed several times as one person left and another replaced him. After the group disbanded in 1954, many other groups used the name. Vinyl records are collected, and many collectors want autographed albums. Some autographed albums sell for a few hundred dollars and some for several thousand dollars. The value depends on the condition, desirability, rarity of the album, the sing-

Check with a local store that sells used vinyl records to get an idea of rarity and value. Locating Pet’s Favorite Food May Be More Difficult - Here’s Some Alternatives Dear Paws: Lately it has been nearly impossible to find my dog’s favorite brand of dry food. He likes it, and it offers the kind of nutrition I want him to have, especially lots of protein. My supply at home is running low. Do you have any suggestions for supplementing my dog’s nutrition with something else until his favorite food is back in stock? — Casey H., Bar Harbor, Maine Dear Casey: Supplementing is the right choice to stretch his dry food supply. What I’d recommend first is to contact his veterinarian to talk about his current diet and figure out ways to continue providing the nutrients recommended to keep him healthy. Vets can offer advice on a good balance of pet foods to give him, as well as ways to entice your dog to eat if he turns his nose up at other dog food brands. Consider adding freshly cooked ingredients to his dinner dish, such as beef or boneless chicken thighs — baked or braised, with no savory elements added like onions or black pepper. Add calories and more nutrients by mixing in steamed rice, peas and carrots. Cool the food before putting it into his dish. Many pet owners will bulk-prepare fresh food once per week and freeze all but the first couple of days’ servings. Mix fresh ingredients with a half-portion of his favorite dry food, or place in separate bowls if he’s picky. Fresh pet food recipes are available online, too. The Dog Bakery (tinyurl. com/mrxbkrkc) has several easy, tasty recipes that add salmon, turkey, brown rice and more to the mix. Rover has a good, basic guide to safely feeding fresh foods to pets. Fall Prevention

W

ith declining temperatures and winter coming, it’s a good time to talk about fall prevention, especially when walking outdoors in winter conditions. According to the National Institutes of Health, almost 1.6 million older adults visit emergency rooms across the United States for fall-related injuries. The risk of falling increases with age, and with winter conditions. A fall can lead to injury, functional disability and even death in older adults; complications such as hip fracture, head injury or brain bleeding are of major concerns. These events lead to emergency room visits, surgery, prolonged rehabilitation and could even result in permanent disability. Prevention is the key. and there are actions we can take to reduce the risk of falling ourselves and older family members or loved ones while out and about this winter. Snow and ice present challenges for all ages, but particularly for older adults. For example, as we age, we experience vision changes, loss of balance, decreases in sensation in our feet, and take medications that can contribute to dizziness or unsteadiness. The good news is that there are ways to compensate for these risk factors and help us still get out and enjoy activities no matter the time of year. Examples include making sure to hydrate and keep your fluids up in case of medications that contribute to low blood pressure, changing positions slowly from sitting to standing then walking is another good tip to

avoid dizziness with position changes. Seeing your eye doctor and keeping glasses up to date and wearing comfortable and low-heeled shoes can help with vision and sensation changes. Finally, using adaptive equipment such as canes or walkers when prescribed by your doctor or physical therapist will also reduce the risk of falls. Regarding the seasonal risks, being aware and taking things slow and carefully in the winter can help prevent falls. It’s always a good idea to dress for the weather and to consider footwear carefully. Low, rubber soled shoes or boots will give better traction and

prevent falls. Additionally, taking things slow and allowing extra time is recommended. Clear walkways or hire someone to help maintain sidewalks and driveways, use sand or kitty litter to help with traction, and use handrails for extra support. When out for walks, have a phone or watch with calling function to obtain help, just in case. When not at home and out on errands take care getting out of the car and on sidewalks and walkways where there could be untreated areas. Avoid carrying too many things and not being able to see where you are stepping. It the conditions are poor or stormy consider using the now ubiquitous delivery services to bring in groceries, medications or other necessities to avoid being out and about in icy or snowy conditions. These commonsense tips apply to all of us, but particularly to older adults. Being at higher risk of falls doesn’t mean avoiding outdoor walks or activities, in fact staying active and mobile can help prevent falls, as can keeping up your exercise routines as the weather changes. Consider indoor exercises on stormy winter days and keep those outdoor walks going in the winter with the proper outerwear and footwear when roads and sidewalks are clear again. Staying flexible and being open to changing routines is key in the winter months to keeping active while staying safe!

All around her were the signs of her busy life ~ dust collecting on her dressers, food splattered on her kitchen appliances, toothpaste residue in her sink, cat hairs on her couches, who knows what on the carpets! Between her full-time job and raising her young family, keeping up with these necessary but often overwhelming chores adds another whole layer of work to Rebecca’s already overcrowded life! Jones, like so many others, needed help. Rebecca called in the reinforcements. She called in the “dream team” of “The Clean Team”! The Clean Team is the “A” team when it comes to cleaning your home or your business. This West Warwick-based cleaning company was started by local resident Briana Kearns. Briana is hard-working, reliable, trustworthy, meticulous, detail-oriented, and extremely thorough. She takes her work, and your home, seriously and will give it the “white glove treatment” every time. Every surface will be restored to its former shine. Every corner, every nook and cranny, will be swept clear of any nasty build-up. Every appliance, every bathroom fixture, every piece of furniture, every shelf, every countertop will be given Briana’s undivided attention. She will take your home and polish it so it is immaculate and sparkling-clean. There is no job too big or too small for Briana.

You can even see the progress she is making on those hardwood floors. Call 401-347-3460 to book your appointment. Briana will come into your home or business and clean it from top to bottom. The process begins with a free estimate of the service you are looking for. This free estimate will be followed by a visit of your determination – whether it is a one-time “deep cleaning,” a weekly or bi-weekly job or a monthly commitment. Briana always does her best to accommodate your schedule. She will provide the necessary supplies and equipment unless you request otherwise. With her confidence in Briana, Rebecca’s home now gleams every month, from top to bottom, after a deep clean by this dedicated worker. In her words: “There is such a weight off my shoulders knowing I can rely on Briana to care enough about her work to make my

home so fresh, clean and revived. These experiences have always put complete customer satisfaction as the end goal, and her work at The Clean Team is no exception. She will always work hard for you. If you need your home or business cleaned call Briana Kearns of The Clean Team to set up your free estimate. Briana can be reached at 401-347-3460 or by email at TheCleanTeam401@gmail.com. On Feb. 13, 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating Copernican theory, which holds that the Earth revolves around the Sun. The Copernican theory conflicted with the teachings of the powerful Roman Catholic Church. On Feb. 8, 1936, University of Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger, the first Heisman Trophy winner, is picked No. 1 overall in the NFL draft. However, Berwanger never played for any NFL team because he had too many demands, which teams refused to meet. Instead the college star became a foam rubber salesman. On Feb. 9, 1942, the largest and most luxurious ocean liner on the seas at that time, France’s Normandie, catches fire while in the process of being converted for military use by the United States. It was to become a troop transport but ended up at the bottom of New York Harbor. On Feb. 7, 1962, President John F. Kennedy issues an executive order broadening the United States’ restrictions on trade with Cuba. The embargo, which effectively restricts all trade between Cuba and the United States, has lapsed several times, notably under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. On Feb. 11, 1970, at the Kagoshima Space Center in Japan, the Ohsumi, Japan’s first satellite, is successfully launched into an orbit around Earth. The achievement made Japan the world’s fourth space power, after the Soviet Union in 1957, the United States in 1958, and France in 1965. On Feb. 10, 1996, after three hours, world chess champion Garry Kasparov loses the first game of a six-game match against Deep Blue, an IBM computer. Kasparov was ultimately victorious when he bested Deep Blue with three wins and two ties and took home the $400,000 prize. On Feb. 12, 2002, former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic goes on trial at The Hague, Netherlands, on charges of genocide and war crimes in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. The trial ended without a verdict when Milosevic was found dead from an apparent heart attack in his prison cell.

Q:

I’m enjoying the new sitcom “American Auto,” but it’s bugging me where I’ve seen the actress who plays the CEO before. She looks a lot like the actress who played Agatha in “WandaVision,” but I’m not convinced it’s her. — L.I. Ana Gasteyer, not Kathryn Hahn, stars in the new Detroitbased comedy series “American Auto.” To me she looks like a cross between Hahn and another talented comedic actress, Jennifer Coolidge (“Legally Blonde”), but I’m willing to bet you’ve seen Gasteyer before. She was a regular on “Saturday Night Live” from 1996 to 2002, and then played helicopter mom Sheila Shay on the sitcom “Suburgatory.” She followed that role with a federal judge on “The Good Wife” and returned to comedy as a drama teacher on “The Goldbergs.” “American Auto” is another workplace comedy created by Justin Spitzer, the same person who created the successful NBC comedy “Superstore.” The commercials for the new series keeping touting it as the next “The Office.” Perhaps they can safely make that assumption because Spitzer was a writer and producer on that acclaimed series earlier in his career. As for Hahn, the character of the delightfully devious Agatha was so well received on “WandaVision” that Disney+ is creating a spin-off series for her character titled “House of Harkness.” *** When is “Outlander” coming back? I hope it hasn’t been canceled. It’s been forever since I’ve seen a new episode. — K.I. In June 2021, the Starz network announced that the historical time travel series “Outlander” would return with new episodes in March 2022. That seemed like an eternity for its fans, but with 2021 in the rearview mirror, the season premiere is just around the corner. “Outlander” is based on a series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, with each new season adapted from a different book. The upcoming sixth season is based on Gabaldon’s “A Breath of Snow and Ashes,” once again featuring Claire (Caitriona Balfe), a time-traveling British nurse, and Jamie (Sam Heu-

Shakespearean actor Mark Lewis Jones joins the cast this season as a new settler named Tom, who first met Jamie in prison. You can catch the first four seasons of “Outlander” on Netflix. *** Whatever happened to 1980s heartthrob Aidan Quinn? I remember him in “Desperately Seeking Susan,” but not much else after that. He is still in the industry? — D.C. Yes, he’s accrued quite a list of acting credits since he starred opposite Madonna in “Desperately Seeking Susan,” but it’s mostly been on television. In 2004, he played Lt. Miller on for a season on “Third Watch,” an NBC series about first responders. He followed that with regular roles on the Showtime series “Weeds,” the American version of “Prime Suspect,” and his biggest role yet, an NYPD captain on “Elementary.” Next up for Quinn is a role in the film “Butterfly in the Typewriter,” about eccentric novelist John Kennedy Toole, who won a Pulitzer posthumously for his book “A Confederacy of Dunces.” Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@gmail.com, or write me at KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

The link between volunteering and academic performance

There are many reasons for parents to encourage children who express an interest in volunteering. Volunteering is a social activity that can help children develop their social and networking skills, and many parents credit volunteering with instilling a sense of perspective in their children that they might not have gained had they not been exposed to people from different backgrounds. Volunteering also has been linked to stronger academic per-

formance. The Corporation for National and Community Service reports that students who indicate they’re doing better in school are more likely to be volunteers than students who report doing less well. The broadened exposure to people and places that students may otherwise not encounter without volunteering also can benefit them in the classroom, helping them more readily identify with cultures and societies they’re studying. College applicants with volunteering experience also may set themselves apart in the increasingly competitive application process. Though a 2019 Pew Research study reported that most schools admit more than two-thirds of their applicants, that figure is significantly lower at many of the more highly rated institutions in the United States. For example, Stanford University (4.3 percent) and Harvard University (4.9 percent) recently reported acceptance rates below 5 percent. Though volunteering alone won’t help applicants gain acceptance to such competitive institutions, it can serve as a strong résumé builder and be even more effective if it also produces the previously noted improvements in academic performance.

Parenting and caring for a special needs child The day a child is born is one of the happiest days in parents’ lives. New parents understand they have things to learn and that there will be challenges along the way. Those challenges could be more immediate for parents of special needs children. Active Parenting Publishers says “special needs” refers to a physical or mental health condition that occurs with development or as the result of an injury. Examples of special needs may include children with learning or behavioral conditions such as dyslexia or attention

deficit hyperactivity disorder. Children with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, multiple sclerosis, or paraplegia also may fall under the special needs umbrella. The National Center for Education Statistics says that, in the 2019-20 school year, 7.3 million public school students between the ages of three and 21 received special needs education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. One of the key challenges parents of special needs children may face is providing care and assistance

without making the child overly dependent on his or her parents. Another challenge may be carving out time to decompress from the role of caregiver. The following tips can help parents and other caregivers who provide for children with special needs. • Ask for help. Parents and caregivers should not hesitate to ask for help when raising special needs children. Caregivers must overcome any misconception that they will be a burden if they seek support. Seek help from friends, family members or support groups. • Release the bonding hormone. Researchers have found that the hormone oxytocin is released when

one person experiences empathy for another, creating a sense of well-being and trust between the two people, according to Active Parent Publishers. Empathize with your child and you can work together more successfully. • Build on strengths. Stimulate independence in your child while resisting the urge to reach in and do everything for him or her. This approach requires patience. Children — even special needs children — need to struggle to a point to develop certain skills and become as independent as possible. Celebrate all achievements, no matter how small. • Establish rules and routines. Rules and routines provide something the child can expect each day. This will encourage a sense of

security. • Make contingency plans. Life may be unpredictable, but have a few options in your back pocket. A contingency plan may include a list of go-to locations if you learn a venue isn’t wheelchair accessible or if a child is bothered by loud noises or lights. Planning is often key when parenting a child with special needs. Learning what works for others may help parents become more effective caregivers.

Giving back to one’s community can take many forms. Some may give back by supporting legislature to make communities more inclusive, while others may volunteer with their local fire departments. Parents of school-aged youngsters can typically find many opportunities to give back through their children’s schools. Parents who volunteer with their children’s schools often 11:33 AM

get a unique glimpse into their children’s life at school. Such parents may see how their children interact with educators and classmates and gain greater insight into the school community where kids spend so much of their time. Volunteering at school also can benefit kids, who may recognize the importance of education more readily if mom and/or dad are spending their free time on campus. That recognition can leave to improved performance in the classroom. Parent-teacher associations can be great resources for parents who want to volunteer with their children’s schools. Each year, students graduate and move on to new schools or colleges, and that means schools are in fresh need of parent volunteers each school year. Though each school has its own unique needs, the following are some roles parent volunteers may be able to play at their children’s schools.

• Tutor • Mentor • IT support: Parents with significant experience in tech or information technology can offer to lend a hand or provide advice or insight in support of a school’s IT staff • Organizer: Schools host many functions in a typical school year, and officials typically ask parents to pitch in so such events can be successful. For example, parents can help organize school fundraisers, dances and holiday bazaars. • Chaperone on field trips • Assistant coach: Many schools pay stipends to the head coaches of their athletic teams, but parents can serve as unpaid assistants or support staff during the season. For example, parents can volunteer to work as gameday staff, taking tickets at the gate or directing ticket holders where to park. • Club official: Extracurricular clubs also can benefit from parents willing to work as

volunteers. Parents can help students who want to start new clubs or serve as moderators or helpers in existing clubs. • Speaker: High schools may host periodic career days throughout the school year to help students on the cusp of applying to college uncover potential career paths. Parents with significant professional experience in a given field can offer to speak to students on career days, sharing information about their careers and industries and answering any questions students may have. • Administrative support: Parents also can pitch to help with behind-the-scenes administrative duties like letter-writing, grant proposals and other projects that play a vital role in securing funding for school programs and other services. Parents who want to give back to their communities can take an active role in their children’s schools.

Important ways music education benefits students Researchers increasingly are finding that “do-re-mi” may be just as essential to children’s development as “A-B-C.” Music education, which was once required in the classroom, is increasingly absent from school curriculums. However, proponents feel there should be a greater push for musical education as part of school curricula because of the many benefits students reap from music education. Taps into multiple skill sets Music participation goes beyond playing an instrument or singing notes from a page. Experts at Music Together, an early childhood music development program, say that participating in music education involves many different skills, including listening, vision, fine motor skills, problem solving, and utilizing large and small muscle groups. Transformative effects A growing body of research points to music for its transformative effects on youngsters. Participation in music education may help improve communication skills, foster better memory and help children focus their attention more effectively, according to the instrument retailer Zing Instruments. Music may provide the common ground to unite children in pursuit of a common goal. Improves language skills Neurobiologist Dr. Nina Kraus participated in “The Harmony Project,” which involved a

series of experiments among second and third graders. Dr. Kraus discovered conclusively that music enhanced sound processing and cognitive skills (memory and attention). Music helps students develop the left side of the brain, which is known for processing language. A 2014 study by Arete Music Academy found children who study music tend to have larger vocabularies and more advanced reading skills than those who do not participate in music education. More consistent attendance rates The National Association for Music Education determined that schools that offer music education have better attendance rates (93.3 percent) than those that don’t (84.9 percent). Higher grades A study in The Journal for Research in Music Education found that students who participated in excellent music programs scored higher on tests in mathematics and English/ language than students enrolled in lower-quality music programs or none at all. Researchers concluded there is a correlation between music education and better retention of material. Support from parents and teachers Both educators and parents strongly believe that music education has a positive impact on overall academic performance, indicates NAMM Foundation and Grunwald

Associates LLC. They also feel that budget cuts in music education or deficits in supplies and insufficient allocation of resources is detrimental to students. Increased IQ scores An experiment published in a 2004 issue of Psychological Science conducted by E. Glenn Schellenberg at The University of Toronto at Mississauga found that, over the course of nine months, six-year-old participants who were given piano and voice lessons tested on average three IQ points higher than those who had drama lessons only or no lessons at all. Music education plays an important role in the lives of students, paying dividends that might surprise even those devoted to ensuring school curriculums include it.

Music education plays an important role in childhood development and acquisition of skills in and out of the classroom.

HOLLYWOOD — “Joker” Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix has a Napoleon complex in his future — or at least it would help, since he’ll take on the emperor of France in “Kitbag,” reuniting him with “Gladiator” director Ridley Scott. His co-star is “Pieces of a Woman” Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby. Kirby stars in “The Son” with Anthony Hopkins, Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern and also will star opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the thriller “Suddenly.” Also taking on a famous persona is “Captain America” Chris Evans, who’ll portray MGM superstar Gene Kelly in an untitled film about a 12-year-old boy who works at MGM in 1952 and creates an imaginary friendship with Kelly. But first we’ll hear Evans as Buzz Lightyear in Disney’s “Lightyear,” due in theaters June 17, and see him in the Netflix $200 million action thriller, “The Gray Man,” with Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas. Taika Waititi, director of the soccer comedy, “Next Goal Wins” starring Michael Fassbender and Elizabeth Moss, had to replace Armie Hammer, due to his sex scandal. He cast Will Arnet in the role. Luckily for Hammer, he wasn’t replaced in “Death on the Nile” because of the pandemic, despite sexual assault charges. “Nile” was long out of production. The L.A. district attorney has hinted he may drop Hammer’s case, but the damage done is a publicity nightmare he may never recover from. Kevin Spacey, however, was not as lucky with “All The Money In The World” (2017) when he was replaced by Christopher Plummer because of Spacey’s sexual assault case. Michael Keaton finally revealed why he refused to play Batman again after his success in 1989’s “Batman” (with a $411.6 million gross) and “Batman Returns” (with a $267 million gross). The latter two films were

Michael Keaton preferred the darker, campy directorial style of Tim Burton. the late Joel Schumacher signed on to direct Keaton’s third “Batman” film, Keaton felt he “could no longer play Batman if the tone was moving away from Batman’s dark nature, it was always about Bruce Wayne to me.” It’s a whole new superhero ball game now. After re-creating Adrian Toomes/Vulture in “Spiderman: Homecoming,” and appearing in “Morbius” (January 29), toplined by Jared Ledo and Matt Smith, he’ll again become Batman/ Bruce Wayne in “The Flash” November 4, but here’s the catch, in this version Batman/Bruce Wayne hails from an alternate universe, while Ben Affleck plays Batman/Bruce Wayne from the timeline of “The Flash” and in the upcoming “Batgirl.” Alternate universes ... what? Do we really need two Batmen?
