Thanksgiving Novena to

ST. JUDE

O Holy St. Jude Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ. Faithful intercessor of all who invoke this special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and three Glory Be’s. Publication must be promised. St Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. It helped me. Thank you St. Jude for answering my prayers.

• If you like taking baths, you can invest in a second rubber bathmat to drape over the side of the tub. The edge will be nonslip, so you can hold on for support, and your hands will not slide. • Before frosting a cake, brush both layers with apricot nectar. This will secure any crumbs and provide a smooth surface. — L.H. in Illinois • For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water. • If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, bring it back easily with extrafine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases. • For delicious baked potatoes, boil a pot of salted water, add whole potatoes with skin, remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Finish in oven for a sturdier skin. Start checking for doneness after 15 minutes in the oven. Baking time can be cut in half! — J.L. in Florida • Remove that musty smell from stored clothes by adding either vinegar or ammonia to the wash water. Be sure to check for smell removal BEFORE drying, as the dryer can bake the smell into clothes, making it more difficult to remove. Your Summer Library Card: Don't Leave Home Without It I'm not a financial analyst, but one thing I do know for sure is that cash is flying out of my billfold. Today's $75 tab to fill the tank in our family car and even more to fill the refrigerator were a clear sign that costs are rising before my eyes.

Remember to keep your library card handy this summer. But wait! There's one place where the sticker price stays the same: FREE. Grab your kids and jump on your bikes today to check out your neighborhood library, the best deal in town. Apply for free library cards to discover how you can fill the summer months with reading and motivating literacy-based activities. It's a deal you can't afford not to invest in, where the dividends count more than dollars and cents. This summer's theme at our local public library — "Look What's Cookin' at Your Library" — got me thinking of some of my favorite foodie-related children's books and literacy

ideas. Take a look at this menu of practical reading and writing activities you can stir up with your family this summer to keep minds sharp. And remember my tip — there's no tab! — Box-Top Reading: Start the day with some box-top reading and surprise each other with the new vocabulary words you pick up. Read ingredients and nutritional information listed on the side panels of cereal boxes, or the serving tips on the back of a frozen-waffle box. — Read on the Go: Pack a book between the sandwiches and chips in your picnic basket. When you read "The Most Perfect Spot" by Diane Goode, the ants and mosquitoes at your spot won't seem like such a nuisance.— Eat and Read: Who doesn't love savory spaghetti on Friday night and a platter of pancakes on Saturday morning? Prepare these family favorites with your young kids, and then wind down the day with classic picture-book titles such as "Strega Nona" by Tomie dePaola and "Pancakes, Pancakes!" by Eric Carle. — Play With Food Words: Enjoy word play around the dinner table. See how many expressions you can think of that use food themes and then talk about them. For example: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," "Go bananas," "Sour grapes," "Bring home the bacon," "Icing on the cake," "That's the way the cookie crumbles," etc.— Grandparent Connection Tip: Share memories of a family recipe with your grandchild. WRITE a grocery list for the ingredients and shop for them together; then READ the directions aloud as you prepare the dish.EXTRA TIP: Keep a basket near your door to corral library books and to store your library cards. *** Find more family fun at www.donnaerickson.com. Tony Award last month, as a producer of Broadway’s “A Strange Loop.” Hudson once confessed, “I got a dog and named him Oscar, and I won an Oscar. I got another dog and named him Grammy and won a Grammy. So, I thought I should get some dogs and name them Emmy and Tony.”

Jerry Seinfield in “23 Hours to Kill” Have you wondered where to go on that dream vacation or how to spend that $110,000 you socked away? Well, Disney is offering a dream vacation flying in a private Iceland Air Boeing 747 on a 24-day tour to 12 Disney parks around the world. The trip includes stops to see the Taj Mahal, the pyramids of Giza, the Eiffel Tower, the Lucasfilm campus and Walt Disney Studios. However, the price doesn’t include airfare to or from the point where the trip begins. But it does include three adventure guides, Disney VIPs, Imagineers, cultural experts, three staff members, a chef and a physician. But, you better hurry: It happens July 9-Aug. 1, 2023, and there are only 75 spots. Does that give me enough time to start up a GoFundMe?

HOLLYWOOD — Jerry Seinfeld will make his film directorial debut with a script he wrote, is producing and is starring in as well. The film’s set in 1963 Michigan, when Pop Tarts were invented by Kellogg’s. Seinfeld’s stand-up act had a routine about the creation of Pop Tarts. It’s available on YouTube (from 2010) and has been seen on The Tonight Show and in his Netflix special. For his film version, he’s enlisted some of the “who’s who” of comedy today: Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Bobby Moynihan, Jack McBrayer as well as Hugh Grant, James Marsden, Max Greenfield and Christian Slater. *** Last week, we told you Joaquin Phoenix is returning in a sequel to “Joker” called “Joker: Folie a Deux,” and guess what? It’s become a musical, with the casting of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. *** Not a sequel, but a prequel for “The Hunger Games” (the trilogy grossed $3 billion) will star Josh Andres Rivera (of Broadway’s “Hamilton” and Chino in Spielberg’s “West Side Story”), his co-star Rachel Zegler (Maria in “West Side Story”) and Tom Blyth (who will portray Coriolanus Snow, originally played by Donald Sutherland). The prequel’s called “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and opens Nov. 17, 2023. *** Jennifer Hudson became the 17th person and 5th woman to join the exclusive EGOT club. (In order to become a member, you must win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award.) Hudson won her Oscar for “Dreamgirls” (2007); two Grammys, one for “The Color Purple” (2017); a Daytime Emmy for “Baba Yaga” (2021); and a

For some people who are still trying to catch up on their spring cleaning, the prospect of summer cleaning is the last thing on their minds. Summer is a time to play and get out into the sunshine so it is not at all uncommon to find that our homes are the first things that get neglected and last things on our to-do lists at this time of year. Eventually, dust, pet hair, grime and residue build up and become inescapable reminders of chores left undone. Homeowners will be relieved to know that they don’t have to tackle these “undone chores” alone. They can call in the “ready and able” dream team. They can call in “The Clean Team”! The Clean Team is the “A” team when it comes to cleaning your home or your business. This West Warwick-based cleaning company was started by local resident Briana Kearns. Briana is hard-working, reliable, trustworthy, meticulous, detail-oriented, and extremely thorough. She takes her work, and your home, seriously. Every surface will be restored to its former shine. Every corner, every nook and cranny, will be swept clear of any nasty build-up. Every appliance, every bathroom fixture, every piece of furniture, every countertop will be given Briana’s top-rated attention. She will take your home and polish it so it is immaculate and sparkling-clean. The process begins with a free estimate of the service you are looking for. This free estimate will be

She will provide the necessary supplies and equipment unless you request otherwise. One extra thing to know about Briana is that she has worked in service-related industries her entire adult life, and this work has always demanded high expectations of her. These experiences have always put complete customer satisfaction as the end goal, and her work at The Clean Team is no exception. She aims to please, and she will always work hard for you.

A recent customer of Briana’s explains “I was always reluctant to hire a house cleaner, thinking I could do it all myself. When a visit by extended family was planned, I quickly realized I was in over my head. Briana came in and cleaned places of my house that I could never find the time to get to. She quite literally saved me! Because of her hard work, I was much more relaxed and much more present for my family. Thank you Briana!” If you need your home or business to be cleaned, call Briana Kearns of The Clean Team at 401-347-3460 to set up your free estimate. says about 9 percent of Americans have master’s degrees, but the degrees increased employability by less than 3 percent. Furthermore, the cost of a master’s degree nearly doubles the average debt held by people with bachelor’s degrees, according to the personal finance marketplace Credible. In addition, certain business owners may even pass up on applicants with advanced degrees because the students had been in school too long or tended to assume their degrees make them worth more, according to a report by Fox Business. That report indicates less than 10 percent of employers believe colleges do a good job of preparing students for the working world, and many employers value applicants who prioritize real-world experience over schooling. This is information students need to consider when thinking about pursuing advanced degrees.

Many college grads are continuing their educations after earning bachelor’s degrees. Roughly 13.1 percent of American adults have an advanced degree, which is up from 8.6 percent in 2000, according to findings from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Eductional Attainment in the United States: 2018. As of 2016, 28.5 percent of Canadians had a bachelor’ s degree or higher, says Statistics Canada. The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center says enrollment in graduate programs continues to grow. It rose 3.6 percent in fall 2020 from a year earlier, and 4.4 percent during the spring 2021 semester, perhaps spurred on by the global pandemic and schools’ more flexible course offerings that cater to remote students. Despite their growing popularity, advanced degrees do not always translate into higher salaries or improved job prospects. The research site Educationdata.org

The Stock Market Has Tumbled,

Now What?

Jeffrey H. Massey Certified Financial Planner™ Massey and Associates, Inc.

Do you remember the old song “Pinball Wizard?” Here are some of the lyrics. Try to read this without the song going into your head! Ain’t got no distractions Can’t hear no buzzers and bells Don’t see no lights a-flashin’ Plays by sense of smell Always gets a replay Never seen him fall That deaf, dumb and blind kid Sure plays a mean pinball…

What does that have to do with your investment portfolio? Your retirement plan? Unlike the “deaf, dumb and blind kid” in the song, we, unfortunately have lots of “distractions… buzzers and bells” compliments of the media. If we collectively turned off our news programs for a couple of weeks, I feel as though everybody’s stress level will be down quite a bit. There is so much noise out there when it comes to the stock market, sometimes it’s hard for some to maintain composure. Have you watched the news only to feel a bit more anxious than you were before watching or listening to the news? Not surprised! So, this message is one of maintaining your calmness, ignoring or limiting your exposure to the media when it comes to the stock market. Downturns in the market are part of a market cycle. The stock market doesn’t just go up and stay up forever. Just like it hasn’t gone down and stayed down forever. Have we had some tougher times? Certainly, and we don’t have to go too far back in time. February/March of 2020 the stock market was down about 35%. The “financial crisis” started in the fourth quarter of 2007, continued through 2008 and into early March of 2009. Before that, we had three backto-back-to back drops in the market, 2000-2001-2002. After each of those bad episodes, the market, seemingly, heroically recovered and advanced from prior high points. (Yahoo Finance, n.d.) My point here is that the market will always be moving, up, down, or “sideways.” One of the most important points of this article is to impress upon you that as the market moves, you should not make any emotional moves about your investments. Of course, that assumes that you have a plan in place, preferably a long-term plan. If you are not working with a financial advisor, preferably a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) Professional, I suggest that this might be a good time

to start working with one. One of the primary jobs of the CFP® is to establish a long-term plan for you and your spouse, if married. Of course, “Significant Others” count, too! Another job is to keep you on track. In volatile times like these, it’s their job to help you see through the “noise” and focus on your long-term goals. As the old saying goes “this, too, shall

pass” and the market decline will lessen then turn to a positive direction. Obviously, no one knows exactly when that will be, but, historically, that is exactly what has happened after every other big downturn in the market. We have seen some softening of the gas prices. I expect that will trickle down to, hopefully, lowering food prices as the cost of transporting food-

stuffs should also go down as diesel costs lower over time. As a kid, I remembered diesel always being much less than gasoline. I don’t know why it is so much higher than gasoline at this point. This article was written just before the second quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers come out. Why is that important? Well, the economists use that number to determine if we have been in a recession. A recession can only be declared after two consecutive quarters of negative GDP figures. The first quarter GDP was negative 1.6%. (MarketWatch.com, n.d.) My guess, and it is only that, a guess, is that the second quarter GDP will be negative as well. That could confirm what most people already FEEL is going on: we have been in a recession thus far in 2022. If you are not currently working with a professional team that has developed a long-term retirement planning goal, now may be a good time to start! The market has “discounted” the value of most stocks and now may be a good time to reposition assets to take advantage of the recovery, when that occurs. Of course, it is important for you to know the current level of risk within your existing portfolio. I suggest learning that first. At our firm, we use software that analyzes your stock market investments and can quantify the level of risk you have in your current portfolio. This could be really important information for you to have. If you have questions about this article, or your investments, we are here to help. As the cost of food continues to rise, most families are looking for ways to save money on groceries. One way is to reduce the amount of meat you purchase. Here are some tips to serve less meat (chances are your family won't even notice). When you make your family's favorite meaty meals, use less meat than the recipe calls for and bulk up recipes with veggies. You can add beans to chili, zucchini to lasagna, and celery, onion and carrot to meatloaf. www.JasonCoblentz.com Serve dishes centered around familiar non-meat Serve dishes centered around familiar nonprotein, like bean and cheese meat protein, like bean and cheese enchiladas. enchiladas (recipe below), vegetable lasagna, macaroni and BEANY CHEESY ENCHILADAS cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches Yield: 4 servings Time: 25 minutes with tomato soup. DIVA PATTI'S ENCHILADA SAUCE This quick and easy recipe makes 3 cups of sauce for less than a dollar. Yield: 3 cups Time: 15 minutes What You'll Need: 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons chili powder 2 cups water 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce 1½ teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Here's How: Have everything measured before you start, as this goes fast and you don't want to burn your flour and oil once you start. In a 2-quart saucepan on medium, heat oil. Whisking constantly and vigorously, add flour and cook for 1 minute. Add chili powder and whisk quickly to incorporate. Add water slowly and whisk. Add remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. I'll end with my No. 1 tip — don't talk about it. Just make the changes and chances are they'll just happily eat what's on their plate. *** Lifestyle expert Patti Diamond is the penny-pinching, party-planning, recipe developer and content creator of the website "Divas On A Dime — Where Frugal, Meets Fabulous!" ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You dislike waiting for promises to be fulfilled and for commitments to be kept, but resist your headstrong tendency to push things along. Your patience will be rewarded. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect continuing opposition to your plans from die-hard detractors. However, your determination to see things through will carry the day. A Pisces has romantic ideas. A Cheat Sheet For Stretching Meat

loves pizza with lots of cheese and veggies. Fill calzones with tomato, spinach and mozzarella. Make pot pies or hand pies with vegetable-based fillings. Embrace the bean. Explore recipes that use garbanzos, black beans or lentils as the protein source. Beans don't have to look like beans when you make falafel or bean burgers. If meatless dinners don't work for you, go meatless for other meals, like oatmeal for breakfast or vegetable-based soups, salads, peanut butter or cheese sandwiches for lunch. Here's an easy recipe for a family favorite.

“Do You Need A New Roof?

If So, I Bet The Last Thing You Want To Do RIGHT NOW Is Spend $15,000-$25,000 Or More On A New Roof!” Call the Roof Assistance Hotline at 401-954-9012 to learn how you may qualify to replace your old roof for $5,000-$6,000 of your own personal funds, regardless of roof size. This is not a loan or a grant so there is no application to fill out and no home appraisal required. Qualifying is strictly based on a free assessment of your current roof. Who this program is for: 1. Homeowners with medium, large or extra-large roofs 2. This program is not based on financial hardship. In fact, many homeowners that we assist are considered somewhat affluent 3. Homeowners with a roof that is between 10-35 years old are ideal 1. 2. 3. 4.

Who this program is NOT for:

Homeowners with smaller than average roofs Homeowners that have replaced sections of their roof over the years, piece by piece Homeowners with roofs that are less than 10 years old Homeowners that a have a roof in absolutely terrible condition that probably needed to be replaced many, many years ago

“I received something indicating that it was possible to replace my roof for a fraction of the actual cost. Now, my roof was over 13 years old and I thought no way, but what the hell I’ll call and find out more. Best phone call I have ever made. These guys have a system that was a joy to watch. I could go on and on I mean these guys saved me $15,000. So do yourself a favor, if you need a new roof call them first.” Brian Bouthillier – North Kingstown, R.I.

Call the Hotline at 401-954-9012 for your free roof assessment or go to www.roofassistancehotline.com Reg#11374
