The Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus: In the past, I have asked many favors. This time, I ask you this very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine.

401-244-9044 120 Lambert Lind Highway geico.com/warwick-nickerson

Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted no matter how impossible. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy.

Kids can splash it, squirt it, sprinkle it, stir it, pour it or spray it. In fact, practically the only thing kids can't do with water is break it! That's why playing with water is so much fun, especially when the temperatures soar and the whole family needs to cool down. You don't have to live near a lake, community pool or ocean to let your kids explore the wonders of the wet. Here are some ideas for both entertaining and educational water fun at home using a wading pool or sprinkler. • Wading pools are like outdoor tubs, so it's fine for kids to bring favorite bath toys into the pool. Don't miss out on sharing some great water experiments with your kids and their friends by taking along items found in the kitchen, too. Bring a clean sponge for dipping, squeezing and sprinkling water on arms and legs. • Plastic containers or measuring cups are perfect to show kids the concepts of volume, quantity and measurement. Let them explore how water "changes shape" by pouring from one container into another. They can use a plastic funnel for the filling and the spilling. Plastic squeegee or pump spray bottles from dish detergent or window cleaner — emptied and cleaned, of course — make great out-

door water squirters. • For older kids, some landlubber games can become water games with the help of the sprinkler. Kids can play follow the leader by jumping through it. For extra fun, an adult can play music from a porch or deck for a variation on "musical chairs." When the music stops, whoever is under the sprinkler at the time is out. It's a water world. Letting kids make friends with water indoors and out gives them a chance to explore, learn and play. It also helps them gain a sense of control and confidence around water that will later prepare them for dips in big pools, lakes, rivers and oceans.

How to recruit and retain quality employees Great employees are the backbone of successful businesses. Savvy business owners recognize the important role workers play in helping a business meet its goals, and recruiting and retaining such employees is a high priority for the world’s most successful firms. According to the recruitment resource Betterteam, 68 percent of human resources professionals report problems filling positions — an increase of 50 percent since 2013. Forbes magazine puts the potential cost of a single bad hire between $25,000 and $50,000. New employees are investments and due diligence should be used to find the right ones. Recruiting top talent may require thinking creatively, and it almost always requires significant effort on the part of the business doing the hiring.

Use various job boards to advertise Many popular job boards, such as Indeed, Monster, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor, offer free advertising for job posters. BUSINESSSpotlight SPILL THE TEA

The perfect Tea Bar and Gathering Place in East Greenwich

4372 Post Road, East Greenwich Monday-Saturday 8am - 5pm & Sunday 8am - 4 pm

by Jennifer Coates An unknown author once penned the sentiment: “A cup of tea makes everything better!” For Madison Fitts and Talia Anzivino, no statement could be truer ~ for them, tea IS everything! When these two college students, who also happen to be stepsisters, best friends, and fellow entrepreneurial spirits, were sidelined last year during the pandemic, they went straight to work. These two like-minded fans of tea (and all things related to tea!) put their heads together and brewed up an idea which sprang to life, unsurprisingly, in the form of sweet tea! Together, they created East Greenwich’s cozy and welcoming Tea Bar & Gathering Space, aptly named “Spill the Tea.” Today, Madie and Talia have taken what has traditionally been a drink reserved for an “older crowd” and had made it more enticing to a new and “up and coming” generation. Tea has been reborn here at Spill the Tea where people of all ages and walks of life are invited to come and linger over a cup of hot tea, a tall glass of chilled iced tea and now, a mug of locally-roasted coffee! Spill the Tea is home to a large variety of locally-baked confections, hand-selected teas, richly blended coffees and even hand-crafted gifts (found in the recently configured “Emporium”, also the tea shop’s dining room). Everything in the tea bar holds an underlying theme and purpose and that is to support locally-owned, women-run businesses. Supporting other women in their efforts to become financially independent, fiscally strong and equally represented in the world of small business ownership is of paramount importance to Madie and Talia. Another guiding principle of these conscientious women is safeguarding the

Salsa Adds Spice to Red Snapper If you’re looking for a way to change your favorite fish recipe, try adding salsa. The word “salsa” really just means “sauce” in Spanish. There are many different kinds of salsa. Salsa roja is a red sauce meant to be eaten warm, usually over enchiladas. Salsa verde is a green sauce made with tomatillos. Salsa ranchera means “ranch style” and is typically made of tomatoes and chilies cooked together. There’s also salsa cruda or salsa fresca. “Cruda” means “raw,” and “fresca” means “fresh.” You also can find commercially packaged salsas in a variety of flavors, including mango, peach and pineapple. The levels of heat of the salsas range from mild to fiery-hot. This simple recipe uses tomatoes, bell peppers and onions to create a salsa fresca topping for snapper. You also can use this delicious sauce on other types of firm-fleshed fish. Serve this spicy Salsa Snapper over angel-haired pasta, rice or cous cous. It’s also delicious served on thick slices of toast that have been rubbed with a clove of garlic and brushed with olive oil.

• Dill planted near tomatoes will draw caterpillars away from the fruits. And it’s delicious. • Potato salad will have more flavor if you whisk together all the dressing ingredients and add it to the potatoes when they are warm. The potatoes will absorb the ingredients better, and the flavor will develop even more during refrigeration. • “I love to grill, and when it’s nice out, we grill every weekend. I always put on extra and use the leftovers through the week. Chicken in salad, a nice flank steak for fajitas, etc. And it means less cooking for me!” — Y.L. in Maryland • Here’s a great recipe for an icy treat: Freeze orange juice or apple juice in ice trays. Throw a handful in the blender for a fruit slush that can’t be beat on a hot day. • “A lot of smoke was coming off our grill, and our patio doors were wide open. Long story short: It swamped the living room with smoke. The smell was a little overwhelming. After we closed the door, my neighbor doused a kitchen towel with white vinegar, wrung it out and waved it around the room. It cleared out the smoke smell right away, and the vinegar smell went away just as quickly. What a miracle!” — F.F. in South Carolina • Got poison ivy? School buses are safe modes of transportation for children. Statistics from Transport Canada indicate that transportation by school bus is safer than by passenger car. School buses are large and heavy vehicles that protect riders during collisions. School buses also help keep a greater number of passenger vehicles off of the roads during high-traffic school times. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that each year approximately 450,000 public school buses transport 23.5 million children to and from school and school-related activities around the United States. Although safety is enforced while students are on the bus, it is also vital for students to remain safe before they board. Ensuring a safe bus stop requires diligence. • Safety starts with students and parents. Students are under the authority of the bus driver while they are on the bus. But before they board the bus, students typically are not supervised. Chaperoned bus stops can help deter rowdy actions, particularly at crowded bus stops. Parents can rotate standing watch and keeping tabs on bus stop behavior. • Arrive early at the bus stop. Accidents can happen when people are rushing and not paying attention. NHTSA advises getting to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. • Stand at a safe distance. Children should remain no less than six feet away from the curb or roadway while waiting for the bus to arrive. Parents should routinely remind students not to run and play at the bus stop. • Lobby for safe bus stop locations. District transportation directors are often tasked with choosing school bus stop locations based

on local policies and attendance. Only basic requirements may be addressed, such as distance between stops. Parents and community members might be able to offer feedback regarding roads with low traffic volume and spots that offer maximum visibility during all seasons. • Minimize street crossings. Parents can drop children off on the side of the road where the bus will stop so the kids do not have to cross roadways unattended. • Use traffic assistance whenever possible. Children who walk to bus stops are urged to walk in crosswalks and on sidewalks and obey traffic controls. Parents can work with their children to find the safest routes to the bus stop, such as on residential streets rather than high-traffic roadways. • Familiarize yourself with the route to the bus stop. Parents are urged to research the area and know where potential hazards on the route to the bus stop may lie. This includes potential human hazards. According to BusBoss, a school bus routing and tracking company, it’s important for parents to know where registered sex offenders live and ensure kids avoid these homes on the way to the bus stop. Other hazardous areas include spots where drug activity or other illegal behavior occurs. • Drive cautiously during school hours. Drivers should exercise extra caution and reduce speeds when schools are opening and closing. There will be lots of students on the roads between 8 and 9 a.m. and again between 2 and 4 p.m. Maintaining school bus safety is of the utmost importance. Students, parents and the school district can work together to make security a priority.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re not Sheepish when it comes to asserting your opinions on what you think is right or wrong. Be assured that you’re being heard, and something positive will follow. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your sense of justice makes it difficult not to speak up about a recurring matter involving a co-worker. But, once again, you need facts to back you up before you can act. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Romance is still dominant, and if Cupid misfired before, don’t worry. He’ll take better aim at someone new this time around. Expect favorable news about a financial matter. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The zodiac’s Moon Children can expect things to work out pretty much as planned. One negative note involves a minor relationship problem that suddenly turns serious. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re suddenly being asked to make choices between two practically equal offers. Which one to choose? Easy. The one most likely to gladden your Lion’s heart. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Once again, you’re confronted by a workplace problem you thought you’d already resolved. This time, you might need to go higher up to find a just resolution.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good for you: You’re determined to stick with your goals and ignore those naysayers who might try to discourage you. You’re on the right track. The challenge now is to stay on it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You’ll soon get news that is supposed to help you with a troublesome situation. Use your sharp Scorpion instincts to determine if the information is reliable. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) If you learn someone has betrayed your trust, don’t just accept it and walk away. You need to know why that person decided to do what he or she did. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A painful family relationship problem could finally begin to heal. Be prepared to show more flexibility than you might like. But it could be worth it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good idea to enhance your career skills so you’ll be prepared to accept a more responsible position when it’s offered. A friend returns a favor just when you need it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show that strong, steely backbone that you usually hide, and demand to be included in any family decision-making that could affect the well-being of a loved one. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be happy being alone at home. But you also love exploring the world outside and meeting new people and sharing new ideas.

• On July 30, 1619, in Jamestown, Virginia, the first elected legislative assembly in the New World — the House of Burgesses — convenes in the choir of the town’s church. Its first laws included prohibitions against gambling, drunkenness and idleness. Sabbath observance was made mandatory. • On July 31, 1937, Charles Martine, an Apache scout who played an important role in the surrender of Geronimo, dies on the Mescalero Reservation in New Mexico. • On July 26, 1948, President Harry Truman signs Executive Order 9981, banning discrimination in the military. It ended a long-standing practice of segregating Black soldiers and relegating them to more menial jobs. African Americans had been serving in the U.S. military since the Revolutionary War. • On July 29, 1967, a fire on the USS Forrestal stationed off the coast of Vietnam kills 134 service members. The deadly fire on the Navy carrier began with the accidental launch of an F-4 Phantom-jet rocket, which hit a parked A-4 Skyhawk jet. • On July 28, 1978, “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” a movie spoof about 1960s college fraternities, starring John Belushi, opens in U.S. theaters. “Animal House” became a huge box-office hit, spawned a slew of cinematic imitations and became part of pop-culture history. • On Aug. 1, 1981, “MTV: Music Television” goes on the air for the first time, with the words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star” was the first music video on the new cable TV channel. • On July 27, 1996, in Atlanta, the XXVI Summer Olympiad is disrupted by the explosion of a nail-laden pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park. Police were warned of the bombing in advance, it exploded before the anonymous caller said it would. Before Client: Sally M. Cranston RI Single family home Kitchen Renovation Completion Time: 4 months Michelle met with her client who expressed her desire to update her “non-functional kitchen”. Sally found it very difficult to clean her tiled countertops. She was also ready to say goodbye to her oak cabinets and hunter green wallpaper. Michelle met with her kitchen designer, contractor, tile installer/ painter, electrician and plumber, to go over the new layout for the renovation. The goal was to create a lighter brighter feel, more storage, and a peninsula large enough to for entertaining guests. They chose cream color cabinets. Subway tile and beautiful glass accent tile was installed behind the stove and at the coffee station. Her old tiled floor was removed and wood plank tile was added in designated spaces. Cambria countertops and funky glass overhead pendant lights were installed to complete the peninsula. The wall color is a soft green/gray (Pearl Gray by Sherwin Williams). The client requested that the project be completed by Christmas Eve. It was finished that afternoon! Just in the nick of time. For questions on your upcoming projects, call 401.954.2065 or email info@MichelleLeeDesigns.com. See more of Michelle’s work at www.michelleleedesigns.com
