BUSINESSSpotlight ENDEAVORS & MORE
Endeavors & More Who wants to clean in the summer?
There are many words that come to mind when describing Endeavors & More, an inviting and cheerful gift shop in Coventry. Some might say the shop is magical, others might say it’s a sensory journey of sight, sound, scent, and feel. Some might say it is a captivating exhibition of creativity, imagination, and craftsmanship. But for Robin Gursky, the owner of Endeavors & More, there is only one word to describe it; that word is “inspired.” For as long as she can remember, Robin Gursky has loved handicrafts. In the back of her mind, the thought long-lingered that she could someday celebrate the work of her fellow crafters. Her husband Peter and sons Noah and Kyle were her biggest supporters when an opportunity
arose last spring to purchase the former business HD Tumblahs, and to run this special shop with her own sense of style. Robin took the matter to God, praying to know whether this endeavor was “meant to be.” When all the pieces fell into place, this was the inspired answer Robin was looking for. The decision was made. The idea of Endeavors & More took flight. Using good-old fashioned elbow grease and plenty of enthusiasm, Robin and her family, along with the invaluable help of her friend Lisa French, went to work. The store had been stripped bare, so the work started from top to bottom. New floors were laid, and walls were painted. Display shelves and clothing racks were assembled. In less than ten days, the Gurskys and friends had transformed
a blank slate into a visual feast! Today, Endeavors & More is both a crafter’s dream and a shopper’s dream! Crafters from across the region now have this neat and tidy space to display their work. Sunlight streams through the shop’s windows, illuminating a bright and welcoming room filled with the handiwork of talented artisans from every corner of the area. Each piece of artwork is unique and original, and each is conceived in a creative mind and heart. Artisans and crafters such as Jenny Christensen of Hopkinton, who is meeting with Robin for the first time today, are able to rent space in the shop. Jenny has brought in her beautiful suncatchers of sea glass & weathered driftwood ~ Robin has the perfect spot for her. Artists rent their space for four months, after which they can renew or end their contract (this is not a consignment shop). The variety and diversity of items sold here is endless ~ everything from jewelry and quilts to candles and baby blankets, from children’s sundresses to dog bandanas and

FROM KING FEATURES WEEKLY SERVICE, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803 CUSTOMER SERVICE: (800) 708-7311 EXT. 236/257 TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH #12345_20220718 FOR RELEASE JULY 18, 2022 EKG Test Result May Be By Dr. Keith Roach a Sign of Heart Block DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently an EKG that showed first degree had heart block and “inferior infarct, age undetermined.” What does that mean? What should I do to make sure it doesn’t get worse? I will be seeing in a few months to get aancardiologist exercise stress echo. What is that? — C.P. ANSWER: The EKG uses the elec trical activity in the heart to give information about the important structure and function of the heart. Although it is a very useful test, it isn’t perfect. “First degree heart block” just means the electrical impulse in the heart that is a little slow. By itself, it is not con cerning, but it does suggest there is a risk of other heart problems, such as second or third degree heart block. sometimes do need treatment These (a pacemaker). It’s something to keep eye on, but it’s possible to have first an degree heart block for decades without progression. An “infarct” is a heart attack. The EKG has characteristic findings of heart attack, which can be localized to a particular part of the heart. In your case, that is the bottom part of the heart, which is supplied by the right coronary artery. This type of heart is often complicated by first attack degree heart block, which may explain why you have that result. A stress test looks for damage to the heart, and especially looks to see if part of the heart is at risk for another heart attack. With a stress echocar-
diogram, the heart is “stressed” by exercise or by medication to speed it up, and the movement of the heart is carefully examined by sound waves. This test can help determine whether you really did have a heart attack and whether you need treatment to help prevent another one. Many people who have had a heart attack never knew it. Either they had no symptoms, or they thought it was something else, such as stomach upset (heart attacks in the inferior part of the heart often feel like stomach problems). But if you have had a heart attack, then certain medicines, such as aspirin, beta blockers and statin drugs, are very helpful in preventing another. If the stress echo is worrisome, the cardiologist may recommend an angiogram, which is the best test we have at identifying parts of the heart at risk for heart attack. It also allows the doctors sometimes to open up blockages in the arteries. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My cardiologist just started me on rosuvastatin (Crestor). What’s the best time of day to take this medicine? — J.M. ANSWER: The majority of cholesterol synthesis in the body happens at nighttime, so for statin drugs that don’t last very long in the body, it’s better to take them at night. This is particularly true with fluvastatin (Lescol), lovastatin (Mevacor) and simvastatin (Zocor). The other statin drugs last so long in the body, it doesn’t really matter what time of the day you take them, although it’s best to take them the same time every day. Many people take high blood pressure medicines along with a statin, and studies suggest improved outcomes taking blood pressure medicines at night, so it is better for many people to take all of their medicines at the same time for convenience. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. I’m really enjoying “The Boys” on Amazon Prime. Is Jack Quaid, who plays Hughie Campbell, related to Dennis Quaid or his brother, Randy? Also, where have I seen the actor who plays Billy Butcher? He looks familiar. — C.B. Jack Quaid is the son of actor Dennis Quaid and actress Meg Ryan. Randy Quaid is his uncle. He’s been acting in TV and films for the past decade. His first role was playing Marvel in “The Hunger Games” and its sequel “Catching Fire.” After multiple guest-starring television roles, he landed a regular voiceover gig in the animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” He also was cast in the latest chapter of the “Scream” movies. New Zealander Karl Urban plays Billy Butcher in “The Boys.” His first role was on a soap opera in his native country called “Shortland Street,” and he later appeared on several episodes of the hit syndicated series “Xena: Warrior Princess.” His biggest break came in 2002 as Éomer in two of “The Lord of the Rings” blockbuster films, and from there, his career has been on a continuous upper trajectory. You probably recognize his handsome mug from the Fox sci-fi/ crime series “Almost Human,” costarring Michael Ealy and Minka Kelly. “The Boys” has been a hit on Amazon and has already been picked up for a fourth season, which should be ready to stream in mid- to late 2023. *** We have been huge fans of “Heartland” on Netflix, having just finished watching season 14. We were shocked that Ty is no longer on the show. Why did the actor leave? — E.S. “Heartland” is based on the series of books by Lauren Brooke and set in the foothills of the Rockies in beautiful Alberta, Canada, starring Amber Marshall and, until recently, Graham Wardle. According to entertainment site Looper, actor Graham Wardle’s exit from the long-running show was of his own choosing. He apparently approached the show’s creator, Murray Shostak, two years ago, saying he wanted to focus on his non-acting endeavors, including his faith-based podcast “Time

Jack Quaid Has Come.” So far, he hasn’t returned to television, but I wouldn’t rule it out entirely. *** Whatever happened to Andy Garcia? I first saw him in “The Untouchables” years ago, but I haven’t come across him since. — R.E. Andy Garcia first gained attention back in 1987 when he played George Stone, a special agent on Eliot Ness’ (Kevin Costner) investigative team in “The Untouchables.” His career continued to soar in the ’90s with starring roles in movies like “Internal Affairs,” opposite Richard Gere, and “The Godfather Part III,” which earned him an Oscar nomination. He later co-starred in films like “Ocean’s Eleven” and its sequels, and most recently, he played the father in the third version of the classic film “Father of the Bride.” (Previous patriarchs were Spencer Tracy in 1950 and Steve Martin in 1991.) It’s a role he can certainly relate to, as two of his own daughters got married this summer. Homeowners must consider a variety of factors when putting their homes on the market. One of the more important things to remember is the benefits of making a strong first impression on prospective buyers. That’s why many homeowners rely on staging when selling their homes. Staging requires more than just clearing out clutter or baking a batch of cookies to create a welcoming aroma. Staging helps potential buyers visualize the potential of a home and see themselves owning and living in the property. While homeowners can effectively stage their own homes, sometimes it is well worth the investment to call in a professional designer or stager. Stagers often work their magic on vacant properties or those that have been sitting on the market awhile. A stager conducts careful research into the market of a particular area and learns about the neighborhood before deciding how to appeal to likely buyers. For example, when staging a coastal home, a stager may go with nautical themes and create the impression of a relaxing and laidback property for entertaining by the beach. Certain rules should be followed when staging a home. Furniture, decor and other amenities in the home should not detract from the house itself. Instead, such items should complement the architecture and feel of the space. Here are some additional staging suggestions. • Remove personal effects. Homeowners are urged to replace personal photographs with neutral artwork and remove other decorative items that reflect their personalities. As an example, an avid outdoorsman probably will want to remove hunting trophies. The goal is to help buyers see themselves in the home, and that can be difficult if existing residents’ personal effects are everywhere.
• Put away nonessential items. Staging helps homeowners create dream spaces. Coffeemakers, backpacks hanging on the wall and dishes in the drainboard may be part of daily living, but they can make it hard for buyers to see a home’s potential. Store such items before holding an open house. • Maximize lighting. Whenever possible, take down or open window treatments to display architectural moldings and let in as much natural light as possible. • Opt for neutral colors and furnishings. Use neutral taupe and gray paint to keep homes prime for buyers. Homeowners who have more eclectic or colorful tastes can put their items in storage and rent neutral furnishings until the home sells. Staging can improve the chances that a house sells quickly. Staging helps potential buyers see themselves in the space without distractions from the previous owners’ decorating or belongings.

Remodel with universal design in mind FAMILY FEATURES
Local code ensures new construction homes and renovation projects reflect the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Universal design, on the other hand, does more than make living spaces more accessible for those with disabilities. It expands on regulations to create more user-friendly spaces regardless of abilities, resulting in more enjoyable, functional design. Often, when people think of universal design, they’re thinking of design that reflects the needs of seniors who wish to age in place. That’s not always the case; universal design can also benefit families with special needs or simply serve as a smart investment for the future. Principles of Universal Design To better understand universal design and how it might apply to your project, consider how the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) describes the seven principles of universal design: 1. Equitable use: The design is useful for people with diverse abilities. 2. Flexibility: A wide range of individual preferences and abilities are accommodated. 3. Simple and intuitive: The design is easy to understand regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills or current concentration level. 4. Perceptible information: Any necessary information is effectively communicated to the user. 5. Tolerance for error: Recognizing the possibility of accidents, the design minimizes potential hazards. 6. Low physical effort: The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with minimal fatigue. 7. Size and space: An appropriate size and space is provided and isn’t affected by the user’s body size, posture or mobility. Trends in Universal Design The line between practical universal design and convenience features

that drive up a room’s “cool factor” is growing increasingly blurry, according to Gary Grabowski, owner of Greater Home Services and a NARI Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP). One example is curbless showers, which eliminates a wheelchair barrier with an appealing design element. In fact, bathrooms are among the highest demand remodeling projects Grabowski sees, especially for people whose mobility is affected, either personally or for a loved one who visits the home. Other examples of on-trend universal design in the bathroom are floating, wall-hung vanities. Grabowski said the open floor space that design creates is enticing whether you need to be able to roll a wheelchair under
it or not. Other on-trend upgrades, such as motion-activated fixtures like fans, faucets and touch controls for showers, may feel like a bit of luxury in the short-term but could serve an accessibility role down the road. In other parts of the house, luxury vinyl plank flooring continues to grow in popularity. Not only is it practical and easy to clean, it’s appealing from a design standpoint and also offers a barrier-free advantage. Getting Started with Universal Design Because most homeowners only explore universal design when there’s a specific need, the world of options is largely unknown. That’s why
Grabowski recommends enlisting the help of a UDCP. “Knowing universal design and the features that enhance accessibility for all kinds of scenarios, I can suggest ideas that people have never thought of to make a living space easier to use,” he said. Grabowski also suggests starting at least a year out so you can make plans from a big picture perspective, including ancillary projects that could make your project even more successful. How to cut costs on home renovations METRO
Do you still have an avocado green kitchen? Is your living room dank and dark? Perhaps there is only one bathroom for a family of six? Answering yes to any of these questions could serve as the catalyst for a home renovation project. Home improvement projects come in all shapes and sizes — some with huge budgets and others that are more cost-conscious. Regardless of what homeowners hope to achieve with their renovations, a common goal across any price point is a desire to save as much money as possible. Home renovations can be expensive, but there are ways to cut costs. • Assess the merit of the project. Remodeling magazine annually publishes a “Cost vs. Value Report” that lists the average cost and return on investment homeowners can expect of various types of projects. If you’re planning to sell your home soon, it may be best to focus on repairs and renovations that will generate the most substantial ROI. • Hire a contractor. Even avid
do-it-yourselfers can sometimes benefit from a contractor’s expertise, particularly for complex tasks. Don’t waste money by trying tough jobs yourself; rely on an experienced contractor who can get supplies for less money and will do the job right the first time. Compare bids from several different contractors and figure out the best value. • Refurbish existing features. Rather than a complete gut and rebuild, figure out where you can revitalize existing fixtures and more. For example, refinishing existing cabinets can save you up to 50 percent compared with the cost of new cabinetry, according to Angi (formerly Angie’s List), a cost comparison and business review resource. • Choose midgrade materials. Certain materials may be all the rage but they come with a higher price tag. Angi reports that granite counters could be $60 to $100 per square foot. However, a composite or laminate that looks like granite and wears well may be $10 to 40 per square foot. Figure out where you can choose middle-of-the-road materials for
Did you know? The National Association of Landscape Professionals notes that lawns can support a significant number of insects feeding on them because the grass grows much faster than the insects can damage it. But noticeable damage, such as brown patches in the grass, severed roots and grass that is easily pulled up, indicate that insect infestations are significant enough to require intervention. Lawn care professionals can work with homeowners to develop solutions to address insect infestations. Infestation prevention involves a handful of strategies, not the least of which is ensuring a lawn is properly cared for. Such care delivers nutrients to the lawn and reduces its risk of becoming undernourished. Undernourished lawns are more vulnerable to insect infestations and weeds. GT224827

maximum value. • Avoid peak seasons. You’ll pay more to install a deck or a pool right before the outdoor entertaining season. There also may be a premium to get work done right before a major holiday. Therefore, consult the calendar to find an off time for a renovation and book it then to save. • Do some prep work. You might be able to save by doing some of the demolition and preparatory work yourself. For example, you can tear up old carpeting before the installation of new tile floors. Perhaps you can mend and patch up walls before a paint job. • Buy a display item. Former showroom kitchens and baths often are sourced at a fraction of their recommended retail prices, according to Real Homes, a home remodel guide based in the United Kingdom. Retailers often update their displays and you may score existing showroom items at a discount. Renovations can be expensive, but there are many different ways to cut costs. SH222675

• On Aug. 4, 1753, George Washington, a young Virginia planter, becomes a Master Mason, the highest basic rank in Freemasonry. The ceremony was held at the Masonic Lodge No. 4 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Washington was 21 years old and would soon command his first military operation. Freemasons trace the origins of masonry back to the erecting of King Solomon’s Temple in biblical times. • On Aug. 6, 1911, Lucille Desiree Ball, one of America’s most famous redheads and beloved comic actresses, is born near Jamestown, New York. Ball starred with husband Ricky Ricardo on television’s “I Love Lucy” from 1951 to 1957. • On Aug. 2, 1939, Wes Craven, the man responsible for terrorizing millions of moviegoers with his “Nightmare on Elm Street” series, is born. Craven began his directing career with 1972’s “The Last House on the Left,” a violent teen horror film. • On Aug. 1, 1943, a Japanese destroyer rams an American PT (patrol torpedo) boat, No. 109, slicing it in two. The destruction is so massive, other American PT boats in the area assume the crew is dead. Two crewmen were, in fact, killed, but 11 survived, including Lt. John F. Meet Your New Favorite Summer Condiment Let's talk chimichurri. Its garlicky and tangy with a spicy little kick, filled with lovely fresh herbs. Light and summery, grassy, verdant and ridiculously flavorful. An essential element of Argentinean cuisine, a bowl of chimichurri can be found on every dinner table, and rightfully so. Once you make it, you'll put it on everything — no exaggeration! Chimichurri verde is an uncooked condiment made from parsley and cilantro, garlic, olive oil, red wine vinegar and red pepper flakes. A variation called chimichurri rojo adds red bell pepper and tomato. While mainly thought of as a condiment for grilled beef, it's beautiful on pork, chicken, shrimp and fish, too. But wait, there's more! It's amazing on tofu, eggs and lentils. Slather it on grilled or raw veggies or use it as salad dressing. Chimichurri can be used as a marinade or basted onto meat as it cooks, or onto cooked meat as it rests. Add it to sour cream or Greek yogurt to make a dip, or mayonnaise as an herbaceous sandwich spread. My family schmears it on bread and eats it with a spoon. Because it goes on everything! This is a perfect recipe when you have too many herbs in the garden or fridge and want to use them up and make them last longer than they would otherwise. Every time I make it, it comes out a bit differ-
ent because I use whatever I have on hand. Parsley is essential to this recipe but, sometimes I have more cilantro than parsley, or I might add other herbs. Sometimes I have shallots instead of green or purple onions. I've used lemon juice instead red wine vinegar. It's all delicious. If you're a purist, you'll want to sharpen your knife and bust out the mortar and pestle. I have nothing but respect for that. Personally, I let my food processor do the work for me, just don't overprocess this sauce. It's supposed to be a little chunky.
CHIMICHURRI VERDE
and pepper flakes and process until combined. Let sit at least 10 minutes for flavors to meld. If making ahead of time, cover tightly (imagine that raw garlic and onion invading your fridge!) and chill until ready to use. Leftover sauce can be kept refrigerated for a week. Here's my favorite appetizer using chimichurri; roast beef crostini. Heat oven to 400 F. Slice a French bread loaf into thin slices, brush with olive oil and toast in oven. Top with slices of deli roast beef drizzled with chimichurri. Remember: Real friends tell you when you have parsley in your teeth. I am that kind of friend. Go check your teeth. *** Lifestyle expert Patti Diamond is the penny-pinching, party-planning, recipe developer and content creator of the website "Divas On A Dime — Where Frugal, Meets Fabulous!" Total Time: 15 minutes Servings: 1 1/2 cups total 2 cups flat-leaf parsley (or 1 cup each parsley and cilantro) 3 to 5 garlic cloves, peeled and coarsely chopped 1/4 cup chopped onion (I used a combo of purple and green onions) 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil © 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes Start by preparing the herbs. Measure 2 packed cups of the washed leaves and tender stems of parsley and/or cilantro. I love that you can use stems in this recipe. They're so flavorful and they're often discarded. In your food processor, www.JasonCoblentz.com process the garlic and onion until chopped. Add the Chimichurri highlights the fresh and flaherbs and process until vorful taste of summer by mixing herbs finely chopped. Animal footstools Footstools were used to elevate the feet of a person sitting in a chair as long ago as ancient Egypt. The stool was usually rectangular with four small feet. In the following centuries, footstools were made as long rectangles with four or more feet. Small stools were kept for use by small, seated children whose feet could not reach the floor. Footstools were often made to match the upholstered furniture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ambitious housewives covered footstools with their needlepoint work. In 1927, a man named Dimitri Omersa, who made luggage for the Liberty of London store, created a footstool shaped like a pig from leftover leather. He waxed and polished the leather. The store started to sell his footstools, and today there are 39 different Omersa & Company animal footstools sold by Liberty, Abercrombie & Fitch and other expensive stores. The footstools retail for about $3,000. *** I inherited my father’s antique bottles that he collected and traded in the late 1980s and ‘90s. They are mostly whiskeys, sodas, beer, tonics and cures. It’s a very extensive and valuable collection. I’d like it appraised for full or partial sale. I recently sold four boxes of sodas for $5,000. Any help is appreciated. You need an expert to look at your father’s bottle collection. Some of your father’s bottle-collecting friends may be able to give you an idea of value or suggest an appraiser. Remember, you will have to pay for an appraisal. Be sure to tell the appraiser that you want the retail value, not an appraisal for insurance purposes only. Contact the major glass auctions to see if they are interested in selling the collection. They will tell you what they think they can get for the bottles. Ask how the sale will be advertised and what the commission and other charges will be.

Make Pounded Pansy Pouches I don't know a young child who doesn't love a hammer. Watch when kids grab one tightly in both small hands, lift it high and pound. Thud! They see it do something. It might only be a nick on a board, or, if lucky, they'll hit a nail square on. Throughout the action, it's a thrilling feeling of control and an introduction to the adult world. Hammers can be the perfect tool for kids to make imprints of fragile flowers, too. When they tap, tap, tap a wax-paper-covered flower on fabric, they magically see the bloom's natural colors and shapes appear right before their eyes. No wonder families recently filled the benches at a craft booth at our local weekend farmer's market. Pounding natural designs of violet pansies onto fabric was the first step. Then the children learned to hand-sew pouches with simple stitches after the pounding. Even some preschoolers could sew handily with adult assistance. Here's how: 1. Cut two pieces of plain white cotton or muslin fabric 2 3/4 inch wide by 3 inches long with pinking shears. 2. Put one of the fabric pieces on a cutting board or a flat piece of wood. Carefully set a fresh pansy bloom in the middle of the fabric — front side
down and stem side up. Cover it with a sheet of wax paper and hammer over the wax-paper-covered flower until its color has been absorbed into the fabric. Remove the wax paper and pansy to reveal the natural, colorful floral design. 3. It's time to sew the two fabric pieces together to form the neck pouch. Thread a large needle with a 30-inch length of embroidery floss. Stack the fabric pieces with the floral print on top and, beginning at the top right corner, sew the sides and bottom together with a running stitch. Guide your child's hands when needed. When complete, remove the needle and knot the end of the floss to the starting corner of the pouch.
A mother places her son's crafty pansy pouch around his neck. Place the pouch around your child's neck and put a coin or some treasure inside.
