A Patriotic Potato Dish

BOB GIBERTI

bobg@rhodybeat.com

rhodyprints.com

Do you love potatoes but think they’re fattening? Potatoes are good for you and have one of the highest nutritional values in the produce department. At just 25 cents per serving, a medium potato (5.3 ounces), eaten with its skin on, has just 110 calories. Potatoes provide nearly half your daily value of vitamin C and are one of the best sources of potassium, which helps to maintain normal blood pressure. Potatoes also are naturally fat- and sodium-free and contain many of the nutrients that are recommended as part of a healthy diet. To create a festive dish in honor of Flag Day, try using red, white and blue potatoes! Here’s some more information about these colorful tubers. RED POTATOES: Rosy-red skin and white flesh. Firm, smooth, moist texture; well-suited for salads, roasting, boiling and steaming. Round reds are often referred to as “new potatoes,” but the term “new” technically refers to any variety of potato that is harvested before reaching maturity. Tip: Roast Reds for Salads — Instead of boiling red potatoes for salads, try roasting them, whole or cut up, to intensify their flavor and bring out their sweetness. Then add vinaigrette or a mayo-based dressing. WHITE POTATOES: Round and long, whites are medium in starch level with a creamy texture. They hold their shape well after cooking. The ultra-versatile round white can be used in most potato preparations.

Tip: Potato Salads — To create signature potato salads, just toss cooked white potatoes with dressings and ingredients “borrowed” from other salads, e.g., Caesar dressing and grated Parmesan, or Ranch dressing, chopped egg and bacon crumbles. BLUE/PURPLE POTATOES: Blue/ purple potatoes originated in South America and have now become popular in the U.S. They have a subtle, nutty flavor and flesh ranging from dark blue or lavender to white. Microwaving best preserves color, but steaming and baking also are recommended. Tip: Red, White and Blues — Combine blue potatoes with whites and reds in salads or roasted medleys to make all three colors “pop.”

GRILLED POTATO KABOBS WITH LEMON-HERB DRIZZLE Red, white and blue potatoes add flavor and eye-appeal to these delicious kabobs. You also might substitute your favorite protein for the chicken sausage or try an all-vegetarian version of this dish. Lemon-Herb Drizzle: 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (such as basil, rosemary, marjoram and sage) 1/2 teaspoon sea salt Juice of 1 fresh lemon Freshly ground pepper to taste 12–16 wooden or metal skewers Potato Kabobs: 1 pound (total) red, white and blue potatoes, scrubbed 1 (12-ounce) package pre--

cooked chicken sausage, sliced 1/4-inch thick on the diagonal 2 ears fresh corn, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 zucchini, sliced 1/4-inch thick on the diagonal 1. If using wooden skewers, soak them in a pan of cold water for 30 minutes to prevent them from burning. Heat olive oil in a small saucepan until very hot; remove from heat and stir in garlic. Let cool, then stir in herbs, salt, lemon juice and pepper; set aside. 2. Place potatoes in a medium-size microwave-safe bowl and cover with a lid or plastic wrap. (Note: If using plastic wrap, make sure wrap is not touching any ingredients, and poke one small hole in cover to vent.) 3. Microwave on high for 10 to 12 minutes or until the potatoes are tender (cooking time may vary depending on microwave). Use oven mitts to carefully remove the potatoes from the microwave. 4. When cool enough to handle, cut the potatoes into large chunks. Thread potatoes, sausage and vegetables onto skewers. Wrap the exposed ends of the skewers with foil to prevent them from burning. 5. Grill over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes, turning frequently and brushing with a little of the herb mixture during the last few minutes of cooking. Remove from grill, discard the foil and place the skewers on a platter; drizzle with remaining herb mixture. Serves 6. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. “Unique” is a word that is often misused by collectors. It means one of a kind. There can never be a unique mass-produced chair but there can be a rare one. More than 20 years ago, the Kovels’ newspaper column wrote about a table with a top that was made to look like an American flag. A similar table is being sold by Woody Auction. The Kovel table had 23 stars on the flag. Maine was the 23rd state, added in 1820. The table being sold at Woody has 35 stars, suggesting it was made to honor the statehood of West Virginia in 1863.

This unusual, flag-topped table is handmade but not unique. Another almost identical table sold at an auction years ago. It had only 23 stars. This table has 35. Could there be others?

The 35-star table was marked by the maker: “Made & Designed by F. Wedin, Roxbury.” Recent research by the auction gallery suggests he was a piano maker from Massachusetts. Both tables were made of solid wood with inlaid stars and stripes. The wavy edges of the 35-star table make it look windblown. It has a drawer with carvings of dueling pistols, side supports like anchors, cross braces like rifles, legs like cannons and cannonball feet. It is estimated at $20,00 to $40,000. It is truly unique. *** I picked up what I think is a Currier & Ives print from a thrift store. I’m just trying to see if the name of the print is a legitimate

Q:

Currier & Ives print. It’s titled “A Mountain Home.” If the title matches a real print made by Currier & Ives, I’d like to know if it’s a reproduction. I bought it for $6, so even if it is a reproduction, I wouldn’t care since I like the print. Currier & Ives was in business in New York City from 1857 to 1907 and is famous for its American lithograph prints. Reproductions and fakes have been made. “A Mountain Home” is not one of the prints listed in books that catalog the original Currier & Ives prints. It’s often offered for sale online, identified as a Currier & Ives print from 1890, but one seller probably got it right when he said it is “after Currier & Ives,” which means it was done in the style of the famous printmakers. *** CURRENT PRICES Weller, coppertone, beaker-shaped, bright green mottled glaze, c. 1975, 6 inches, $125. Banjo clock, Federal, inlaid, mahogany, 8-day brass movement, pierced brass side arms, c. 1850, 29 1/4 x 10 inches, $250. Tramp art comb box, 3 tiers, mirror, Pure & Sweet cigar box drawer, porcelain buttons, c. 1900, 27 x 7 1/2 inches, $435. Map, Rocky Mountains, Oregon and North California, lithograph on paper, John Charles Freemont, 1845, 33 x 54 1/2 inches, $685. *** TIP: Permanent marker stains can be removed from most wood or textiles by wiping with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol. HOLLYWOOD — Superstar standup comic Sebastian Maniscalco, who made his film debut in the Oscar-winning picture “The Green Book” (as Johnny Venere) and then played “Crazy Joe” Gallo opposite Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci in Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” will now STAR opposite De Niro in “About My Father.” The script, written by Maniscalco and based on his relationship with his real father, starts shooting later this year. When Maniscalco asked his father who should play him, his answer was, “De Niro, who else?!” De Niro, picky about what he acts in, obviously loved the script because he immediately said “Yes.” *** Chris Rock, a huge fan of the “Saw” franchise, approached Lionsgate with his ideas on how to extend the franchise from “Jigsaw” (“Saw 8”) to a ninth film, which opened May 14 to favorable reviews. Rock had a dramatic role in 2020 in 10 episodes of “Fargo” (as Loy Cannon), and he enjoyed it so much that he wrote the starring role (with touches of comedy) in “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” for himself. With Rock on board, Lionsgate was able to sign Samuel L. Jackson and Max Minghella to join him. It started shooting July 2019 and wrapped that August. Originally scheduled for release in October 2020, it was rushed to release May 2020, then delayed due to the pandemic. A sequel, “Saw X,” is already in the works, along with a possible TV series. *** Sequels, sequels, sequels! “Knives Out 2” will again star Daniel Craig, as well as Edward Norton and Dave Bautista, when it begins shooting in Greece. Netflix has allotted $400 million, aiming at a December 2022 release for “KO2,” followed by “Knives Out 3,” being shot back-toback. And “Venom,” which grossed $855 million in 2018, has the sequel

Hilary Swank “Venom 2, Let There Be Carnage” already shooting with Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Reid Scott returning, adding Woody Harrelson and J.K. Simmons to the mix. *** Two-time Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank (best supporting actress for “Boys Don’t Cry” in 1999, and best actress for “Million Dollar Baby” in 2004) seemed to disappear during the pandemic, but she was in Australia in June 2019 making the sci-fi thriller “I Am Mother,” with Rose Byrne; the horror/thriller “The Hunt,” with Betty Gilpin, Amy Madigan and Emma Roberts (in New Orleans); as well as “Fatale,” with Michael Ealy and Mike Colter (shot in L.A.). She also starred in the Netflix series “Away.” But she’ll return in a blaze of glory playing racing pioneer Janet Guthrie, the first woman to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500, in “Speed Girl.” If that doesn’t get her career racing again, nothing will!

Motorcycles

Millions of motorists traverse the country’s roadways when the weather allows. An increasing number of those motorists are seeing the sights while riding motorcycles. Riding a motorcycle can be an awe-inspiring experience much different from riding inside a car or truck. According to the motorcycle information resource Biker Report, 1.5 million Americans owned a motorcycle in 2018. Even though motorcycle accidents have declined in recent years, a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, a nonprofit organization representing state highway safety offices, indicates that, when adjusting for miles traveled, motorcycle fatalities occur 28 times more frequently than fatalities involving passenger vehicles. Alcohol and drug impairment, distraction and an aging motorcycle population have contributed to the elevated accident risk among motorcycle riders. However, inexperience also plays a role. By adhering to certain safety measures, novice riders can avoid various risks and stay safe as they get more acclimated to their motorcycles. • Get your license. It is essential to ride with a license. In the United States, riders are required to have a motorcycle license or endorsement in addition to a driver’s license to legally ride a motorcycle. Depending on where riders live, a motorcycle safety course may be a prerequisite to getting a license and can help riders improve their skills on a motorcycle. • Enroll in a safety course. A safety course can teach riders various strategies, including emergency evasive maneuvers. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers courses for riders, who can check to see if any such courses are available in their areas. • Wear a helmet. Many states require motorcycle operators and riders to wear helmets when bikes are in operation. Helmets are required by law in Canada across all provinces and territories. The U.S. Department of Transportation also recommends a full-face helmet as an added safety option for novice motorcycle riders. Biker Report states that a helmet can reduce risks of brain injuries from a motorcycle accident by up to 67 percent.

• Wear protective clothing. In addition to helmets, jackets and other protective gear can reduce the risk of injury for riders involved in crashes. A 2011 study published in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention determined there was a significantly reduced risk of injury to the upper body when riders wore fitted body armor. • Practice in a closed environment. It is essential that motorcycle riders grow accustomed to riding the bike they will be taking out on the road. Doing so in a parking lot or a closed course enables riders to get a better feel for the throttle grip and brakes and steering. Riders can gradually increase their time on the motorcycle and skip long distance trips until they feel comfortable on their bikes. In addition to these tips, novice riders are urged to be as visible as possible while on the road. Bright or reflective items can make motorcycle riders stand out. With these safety measures in place, novice motorcycle riders can reduce their risk for accidents and injuries while on the road.

'Too Good to Be True' Slow-Cooker Beef Tacos It's finally time to share my family's favorite "Too Good to Be True Slow-Cooker Beef Tacos" recipe. Passed on by word of mouth from one neighbor to the other, it's a recipe that's so easy to remember that I've just never taken the time to write it down. Simply put: "Place pot roast sprinkled with taco seasoning in a slow cooker. Set on high and cook five to six hours. Spoon tender, shredded beef into warm soft taco shells and add favorite fillings." That's it! No-fail, no-fuss cooking that our busy lifestyles demand when we want to gather friends together for a robust and tasty evening meal.

SLOW-COOKER BEEF TACOS 2½– 3 pound boneless beef chuck pot roast, trimmed of fat 1 ounce package taco seasoning mix, such as Old El Paso brand 1 medium onion, peeled and sliced (optional) 12 flour tortillas Toppings according to taste: cilantro, chopped tomatoes, chili peppers and onions, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, squeeze of lime juice

1. Sprinkle both sides of meat with seasoning mix. Reduce the amount according to taste. Place meat in slow cooker. If using onion, spread slices evenly over the meat. No need to add water. 2. Cover, set on high and cook for five to six hours or until meat is tender and easily falls apart. Remove from slow cooker with a large slotted spoon. 3. Using two forks, shred the beef into a large bowl. Add onion and remaining warm juices from the slow cooker. Toss lightly to keep moist. 4. To serve, spoon meat into warm soft taco shells. Add favorite toppings. Makes 12 tacos.

TIP: For a spicy pot-roast dinner, follow above steps. After three and a half hours in the slow cooker, add six peeled and quartered potatoes and six medium carrots, halved crosswise and lengthwise, on top of the meat. Add pepper and 1/4 teaspoon salt. When meat and vegetables are tender, about two hours later, remove meat and vegetables with a slotted spoon and place on a serving platter. Spoon drippings over meat, and serve with a fresh green salad. Serves 6. Find more family fun at www.donnaerickson.com. Purposeful Ways to Style a Multi-Purpose Room

W FAMILY FEATURES

hether you call it a laundry room, mudroom or something else entirely, that multi-purpose space is likely a hub of activity in your home. For homeowners creating this utility space from scratch, the sky is the limit, but even if you’re updating an existing room, there are plenty of ways to add purposeful style and function. Homeowners are often looking for ways to use the rooms in their homes in multiple ways. With some thoughtful planning and the right materials, even a modest utility area can become a multi-functional space for the entire family. Take a utilitarian approach. When planning your space, put function front and center. There are plenty of clever ways to enhance the aesthetics, so focus first on how you want to use the space. It may be hard to conceive at first, but it’s possible to create a space that serves not only your basic laundry essentials, but also provides space for you to care for four-legged friends or enjoy a hobby. For example, you might add pet washing and grooming features, along with an oversized sink that doubles as a gardening and potting area. In a multi-use room, it’s also important to be conscious of details like lighting and cabinetry inserts that can help bring organization and order to the space. Puck lighting and LED strips illuminate select areas while dividers, sliding shelves and custom pull-out cabinets ensure your items are stored out of sight but within easy reach. Be color conscious. In a high-traffic space that sees a fair share of dirt and grime, color is an attractive way to cleverly disguise what lurks in between cleanings. Gray tones are at the core of many contemporary interior schemes, and a mid-tone gray color palette is ideal to hide dirt and hair while providing a crisp and clean foundation for a cohesive look. For example, Wellborn Cabinet’s Shaker-style Hanover door offers clean, fuss-free lines ideal for a utilitarian space. Choose maple and finish the cabinetry with Ash stain, a trending midtone gray that emphasizes the detail of the wood grain. You can also bring additional character and personality to the space with accent color. For example, earthy green walls and tiling that complements the paint and cabinetry offer a subtle blend of colors that enhance the overarching contemporary feel. Focus on ergonomics. A utility room is a place for working, so you’ll want to make accommodations to make those moments more enjoyable. For example, a raised large basin tile sink offers a spine-friendly alternative to bending over or squatting while washing a pet or potting plants. For a larger dog you can’t heft into a sink, you might consider a washing station with tiled steps, a frameless glass enclosure and lowmounted, hand-held showerhead. Pampered Pets With a pet-friendly multi-purpose room, you can make the less glamorous tasks of pet ownership more enjoyable while you shower your pooch with special attention. Built-in kennel: Using cabinetry, along with sturdy chicken wire mesh in place of panels on the door frames, you can build a stylish kennel right into the room. A simple drip tray protects the wood surface and makes cleanup easy. Toe-kick feeder: Maximize every inch of space with clever solutions like a feeder that hides away under the cabinets. With built-in wells for food and water dishes, this convenient unit appears with a gentle nudge then easily slides back under the cabinet to make the space clean and neat again. Pet feeding center: Organizing your pet supplies keeps the area extra tidy, so make use of hidden storage with a pullout cabinet that holds pet food and other accessories out of sight.

Now more than ever it’s more than just buying or selling a home! By DONNA DeLAURO

Now more than ever it’s more than just buying or selling a home! Whether you are thinking of buying, or selling a home, there are some important things to consider. Where do you begin? In the current real estate market, it is important to start with a team of professionals working on your behalf throughout your transaction. As a buyer, your team (Realtor, Lender, and Attorney), will work hard to help reach your goals. With little inventory out there, your Realtor will keep you on top of the market of available properties for sale and be sure you don’t miss an opportunity to purchase amongst the crowd. Popular listings will have limited time on the market and showings may be determined at the onset of the listing going active. Buyers need to be available for showings on specific days and times, and there may not be an opportunity for a second showing before making that important decision to make an offer. Strategic negotiations are critical in a multiple offer situation. Every transaction has its own unique set of circumstances, be it the seller’s situation, the property condition, location, timing constraints etc.Your Realtor will research the property history for any potential red flags or information that may have an impact the terms of your offer. Your Lender will be a vital resource and your first step to determining your buying power. Your Lender will qualify you utilizing the best loan products that will fit your financial situation as well as provide a basis for your qualification to the seller. In a multiple offer situation, the seller will review all offers analyzing not only the highest price, but the best terms as well. Buyer qualification is a key factor to successful negotiations. Depending on the loan type, the appraisal is also vital to getting to getting to the closing table. We are seeing all kinds of unusual offer terms in this competitive market. Buyers waiving inspections and appraisal conditions, offering incentives to sellers in hopes to have their offer accepted. Your Attorney will provide a title search to be sure your new home is clear of any liens or encumbrances and prepare the important details for your closing. Your Attorney will be representing the transaction for the lender and you as the buyer. Often the seller will have representation of their own. This will be most important if there are issues along the way and matters need legal assistance.

In both buyer and seller transactions, your Realtor will be your guide towards a successful closing. Your Realtor should be attentive, listening to your specific desires and goals and be always honest and upfront. How do you find a Realtor who will help you reach your goals? Many of you will know someone in the business, maybe a friend or relative. Is it wise to work with family? Will my Realtor friend be the best resource for me? Perhaps, if that person is the best one for the task at hand. Here are some questions to ask yourself… 1. Is the Realtor a full time, or part time worker? 2. How successful is that person? 3. Does that person have positive testimonials from past clients? Interview several to compare how well you interact with them. Ask questions that are pertinent to your specific needs and goals You should feel comfortable about your confidence in that person You will spend a good amount of time with your Realtor, it is important that you are comfortable talking about your personal situation. There are standard tasks that all Realtors should perform… For listings…provide a current market analysis to determine fair market

value for your property, advise how to prepare the property for sale, complete paperwork, take pictures, submit the listing in MLS and other real estate search sites, be available to show your home. For buyers…meeting the buyer for a consultation prior to starting, providing the financial, and procedure expectations. Setting up your specific search criteria so you receive email alerts when properties come available for you, and coordinate showings to visit. Assist in a strategy to making an offer on a property, and assisting, and coordinating the transaction to closing, communicating with your lender, attorney, and list agent. The exceptional realtor will provide their best contact information to all prospects and agents, answer requests immediately, show the property at the convenience of others, and

maintain communications with all parties. Once an offer is prepared, or received, then the important work begins. Your realtor has a lot of work to do to be sure the transaction goes smoothly, being present and available to everyone involved, communicating with all parties, coordinating and guiding you through step by step tasks driving you to the closing table, being informed and proactive so there are no surprises or disappointments. You can search for an agent online or hire one that has been recommended by someone who has had a positive experience. In any case I hope your purchase or sale is successful and stress free! Great employees are the backbone of successful businesses. Savvy business owners recognize the important role workers play in helping a business meet its goals, and recruiting and retaining such employees is a high priority for the world’s most successful firms. According to the recruitment resource Betterteam, 68 percent of human resources professionals report problems filling positions — an increase of 50 percent since 2013. Forbes magazine puts the potential cost of a single bad hire between $25,000 and $50,000. New employees are investments and due diligence should be used to find the right ones. Recruiting top talent may require thinking creatively, and it almost always requires significant effort on the part of the business doing the hiring. Write a well-crafted job ad The job advertisement is the first thing job seekers will see and it will be the initial tool to help whittle down the applicant pool. Use clear job titles that explain the job and be concise; avoid buzzwords like “wizard,” “rock star” or “ninja.” Candidates tend to skim job descriptions, so avoid wordy phrasing and confusing job roles. Break down responsibilities into job duties, and be sure to mention specific make-or-break skills applicants will need to have. While you still may get some unqualified individuals to apply, you may weed out others with specifics of the job.

Establish a list of traits you want new employees to possess An applicant’s skills, education and experience are important. However, this should not be the only factor to consider when mulling a potential hire. Seek employees who have the potential for growth and can get along with colleagues and existing and new clients. Use various job boards to advertise Many popular job boards, such as Indeed, Monster, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor, offer free advertising for job posters. They are good places to start because they generate lots of traffic. Social media also can work much in the same way as free job boards, according to Workable, a recruitment software company. If you don’t find success with free job boards, you may need to go elsewhere. Attend job fairs and utilize interns Building a community connection through local job fairs, networking with alumni organizations, and relationships with universities, trade schools and colleges can provide constant resources for new talent. Plus, applicants may feel more comfortable working for a company that has outreach in the local area. Follow up on references It may take time, but it’s important that refer-

ences are contacted and previous employment is confirmed. Due diligence with a candidate’s references ensures companies get a bigger picture of potential hires, according to Indeed. Ask questions like “What is it like to work with the candidate?” or “What are their biggest strengths and weaknesses?” Finding quality talent is an important task that’s vital to the success of businesses big and small.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love my two fluffy cats, “Jake” and “Manny,” even though I am allergic to the dander in their fur. Antihistamines help, but not completely. Would an air purifier help keep the air clear? — Jemma G. in Kansas City, Missouri DEAR JEMMA: An allergy to pet dander can be tough to keep under control — so much so that some pet owners give up their pets. I’m so glad you’ve kept your family together. Pet dander is generally underneath a dog or cat’s coat, near the skin. They shed fluffy bits of fur almost constantly, and dander is carried off with that fluff. Because dander can be tiny — 75 microns or smaller, which isn’t visible to the naked eye — it’s hard to isolate and get rid of. An air purifier may help, but only if it’s the right one to trap dander. Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter — one that can be changed easily. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters trap particles as small as 0.5 microns. Avoid “ionizing” air purifiers as these don’t trap as many dander particles; plus they can be expensive. The size depends on how much of your home you’d like the air purifier to work in; for example, desktop-sized units have a range of less than 200 square feet, which makes them ideal for desks or next to your bed. No single strategy will reduce dander or other allergens. Tackle the issue from multiple angles. Dusting and vacuuming the house frequently can reduce dander, and brushing your cats’ hair daily will reduce extra shedding. If these activities trigger allergies, consider wearing a filter mask and goggles to hopefully reduce the reaction. Send your comments, tips or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

I just finished watching the first installment of “True Detective” with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. I’ve heard that the subsequent seasons with a different cast and mystery are not as good, so I might just skip those. Will there be a fourth season, and is there any chance that Harrelson and McConaughey will return for it? — E.O. When the anthology series “True Detective” premiered on HBO in 2014, I remember being surprised that two big movie stars were doing a TV series together. Nowadays, television and streaming services have so many quality projects, it’s easy to see why stars cross over often without a second thought. The third installment of “True Detective” did seem to win back fans and critics alike with lead actor Mahershala Ali taking home an Emmy. According to Deadline.com, a fourth season is in the works, with Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO/HBO Max, “working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take.” McConaughey seems to have shifted away from acting, at least for now. He taught a film production class at the University of Texas and recently expressed interest in running for governor of the Lone Star state. Harrelson will play Timothy Leary in an upcoming limited series “The Most Dangerous Man in America,” but it’s not known yet when or where that show will air. *** Is Jake Tapper the novelist the same man who is on CNN? — R.E. Yes, the multitalented Tapper hosts a weekday news program along with other onscreen duties at CNN. He has published both nonfiction and novels, and also is a political cartoonist. His latest book, “The Devil May Dance,” is set during the Rat Pack world of Hollywood in the early 1960s. Tapper, 52, has said in interviews he’s fascinated with that era. Right now he seems to be at ease juggling his many hats. Let’s hope it continues.

I saw a preview a while back for another musical by the man who created “Hamilton.” I thought it was going to be in movie theaters, but then the pandemic hit. Did they ever finish it? — S.T. You’re thinking of “In the Heights,” which Lin-Manuel Miranda created for the stage long before “Hamilton” became a Broadway sensation. The film adaptation was due out a year ago, but COVID-19 put a halt to that. Fortunately, it’ll be in theaters and available to stream on HBO Max beginning June 18. “In the Heights” the film is directed by Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians”) and stars Anthony Ramos and Leslie Grace. It’s set in the largely Dominican, Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. Ramos reprises his lead role of Usnavi, a bodega owner who dreams of winning the lottery and the heart of a young woman who works at a beauty salon. Jimmy Smits (“NYPD Blue”), Stephanie Beatriz (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and Lin-Manuel Miranda himself round out the talented cast. www.rhodeislandstrengthandconditioning.com by Jennifer Coates If you have ever dreamed of meeting a gladiator in real life, then head right to Rhode Island Strength and Conditioning on Cowesett Avenue to shake hands with Anthony Raymondo (but be prepared, gladiators have strong grips!) Anthony Raymondo, who opened this training gym this April, has a presence about him that could easily be mistaken for this medieval warrior, but the truth is, he is just an “ordinary guy” with a passion for fitness and self-discipline. Anthony Raymondo is a 46-year-old Navy veteran and longtime Martial Artist whose life took a sudden turn several ago when a serious car accident sidelined him from his regular job. Though he is an experienced and decorated Martial Artist who has been training others since 2006,

this accident and the corrective surgery that recently followed it quite literally changed the course of his life. Today, Anthony owns and operates this compact but fully equipped gym in West Warwick. It is here where he is able to share his lifelong love of physical fitness. Now, he invites you to join him. Rhode Island Strength and Conditioning is the perfect place for anyone who is looking to reclaim their bodies through personalized exercise programs or through self-directed workouts. When Anthony says that everyone is welcome at this gym, he means it. Whether you are a high school athlete seeking to stay at the top of your game off-season (or mid-season) or a middle-aged woman trying to work off some weight and gain some muscle tone, this is the place for

you. There are many options available at Rhode Island Strength and Conditioning, from the free “Sunday Funday” workouts to the classes led by Anthony (where participants follow a prescribed workout of repetitions and routines) to the one-on-one personal training that Anthony offers to the independence to come and go as you please. The gym is outfitted with the latest equipment including a 12” power lifter camber bar, a power cage, a cable tower, air bikes, a HUGE Bridgestone Tire (weighing in at a hefty 650 pounds) and a “Reverse Hyper Machine”. Using this equipment, along with kettle bells and Mace weights, among others, Anthony will create the perfect program for you and will guide you through your strength and conditioning goals. For those who are still developing those goals, Anthony is so much more than a personal trainer. He is also a talented motivator and coach. One of his mantras is “When you discipline yourself to do the hard stuff, it makes the hard stuff less hard!” He believes in the inherent power of the human body and its ability to overcome almost any

I’m a certified believer in movie soundtracks. Music can not only trigger a great movie memory, but from where I sit, it just makes sense to have a playlist curated by an expert. Maybe it’s my age — I’m firmly Gen X, and movie soundtracks are the precursors to today’s Spotify playlists. The Recording Industry Association of America ranks songs, albums, etc., and the top 20 list agrees: The majority of bestselling soundtracks are movies in the 1980s and ‘90s. Here are some gems from the top 20, by decade. John Travolta starts us out with the phenomenon that was 1977’s “Saturday Night Fever.” Tony Manzano (Travolta) and friends live for the weekend disco, and the Bee Gees became the score of the late ‘70s with the title track, “More Than a Woman,” “Night Fever,” etc. Travolta follows it up alongside Olivia Newton-John with 1978’s “Grease.” The decade feel closes with Neil Diamond’s soundtrack to “The Jazz Singer,” where Diamond plays a young musician wresting himself from a traditional upbringing on a path to musical success. The 1980s feature some absolute iconic soundtracks that trigger instant recognition. Think about the biggies from this decade: “Flashdance,” “Footloose,” “The Big Chill,” “Top Gun.” But in the No. 3 spot of all time sits the soundtrack for “Purple Rain,” pitting The Kid (Prince, who performs with his band, The Revolution) in all his earnestness climbing the Minneapolis club scene, against a rival band, Morris Day and The Time. Another chart-topper features music from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘80s, but all highly associated with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in 1987’s “Dirty Dancing.” Then in 1989, a Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” bub-

bled up from the bottom of the ocean to soundtrack success. While the 1990s gave us tracks like “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina,” in which Madonna sang her way to the No. 18 spot for the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical “Evita,” you have absolutely “nothing, nothing, NOTHING,” if you don’t have the soundtrack to “The Bodyguard.” This masterpiece by Whitney Houston — where she plays an incredibly popular and talented singer who brings on a gruff bodyguard (Kevin Costner) and falls in love — sits as the queen of soundtracks, going platinum 18 times. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A heads-up alert to all free-spirited Ewes and Rams: Be wary of a deal that could result in compromising your independence. Check every detail before making a commitment. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) New facts emerge that help put an irksome workplace situation in perspective. Meanwhile, pay more attention to a family member who needs your wisdom and strength. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A slight setback in plans is nothing to worry about. Use this delay to deal with a number of matters you might have ignored for too long. Expect news from someone in your past. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’re entering a period of stability. Use it to straighten out any outstanding problems related to a very personal situation. Also, pay closer attention to financial matters. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you love being a social Lion, you might well benefit from staying out of the spotlight for a while. You need time to reflect on some upcoming decisions. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A difficult family situation improves, thanks to your timely intervention. You can now start to focus more of your attention on preparing for a possible career change.

Whitney Houston in “The Bodyguard” 1990s: George Strait’s “Pure Country” soundtrack, as well as albums for “The Lion King,” “Forrest Gump,” “Space Jam,” “City of Angels” and “Titanic” (carried almost exclusively by Celine Dion’s ubiquitous “My Heart Will Go On”). Rounding out the decade is 1995’s “Waiting to Exhale,” also populated by Whitney Houston songs. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An on-the-job change works to your benefit by offering new opportunities. It’s up to you to check them out. Meanwhile, a stalled romantic situation starts up again. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That flare-up of Scorpian temperament cools down, leaving you more receptive to suggestions about changes that might need to be made in your personal life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unusual period of indecisiveness is a mite frustrating. But things soon clear up, allowing the sage Sagittarian to make those wise pronouncements again. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might feel that you know best, but it’s not a good idea at this time to try to force your opinions on others. Best advice: Inspire change by example, not by intimidation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some setbacks could affect your plans to fortify your financial situation. But things start moving again by early next week. Meanwhile, enjoy your resurgent social life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show that often-hidden steely spine of yours as you once again stand up to an emotional bully. You’ve got the strength to do it, especially as friends rally to your side. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ruling planet, Mercury, endows you with a gift for writing.
