Here's how:
1. Paint the outside of the box green. Cut out a leaf shape to cover the lid using craft foam or colored paper. Draw details with markers and glue the leaf on top of the lid. Now create a stand-up figure with craft foam to look like the birthday child and glue it on the leaf using a glue gun. You might wish to glue a photo of the child's face onto the head of the figure. 2. Now comes the secret and rather clever part of your beanstalk greeting — the leaves and the stem! For the stem, cut a strip of construction paper 3/4 inch wide and about 24 inches long (tape a couple of lengths together if your paper isn't long enough). Fold the

Is there a birthday in your house? Make it special with this personalized "accordion card in a box" that spills out highlights of each year of the birthday boy or girl's life. The fun starts with rooting around the house for a small cardboard gift box. (Or, use a clean plastic deli or margarine tub with a lid that snaps on top.) Then, choose a character or theme to decorate the outside of the box. For example, if son Nick is turning 10, you might create a "Jack and the Beanstalk"-style card in a box and call it "Nick and the Beanstalk."

paper accordion-style to fit perfectly inside the box (each fold should be the dimension of the base of the box). Glue the top accordion fold to the inside of the lid, and glue the bottom fold to the inside base of the box. Let dry. 3. Cut out a leaf shape for each year of the child's life from construction paper. Make them a bit smaller than the inside of the box. Glue the leaf shapes in the sections between the folds. With a black marker, write one event or experience that stands out for each year of the child's life. For example, "Had a buzz cut done by Dad"; "Refused to eat vegetables"; "Won Pinewood Derby race"; etc. Gently fold the long beanstalk neatly in the box and replace the lid.

At the birthday celebration, watch the birthday kid smile when he lifts the lid to see the beanstalk grow with a delightful mix of memories. TIP: The accordion card in a box is terrific birthday gift greeting and treasured keepsake for grandparents, aunt and uncles, too. Simply make the beanstalk a little or a lot longer! *** Find more family fun at www.donnaerickson.com. Write to Donna at Info@ donnaerickson.com

The Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus: In the past, I have asked many favors. This time, I ask you this very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted no matter how impossible. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy.

Building Your Family Staying Healthy by JENNIFER L. EATON, MD, MSCI
At Women & Infants Fertility Center, we are here to help you build your family. There are many reasons that a couple or individual may seek fertility treatment. For heterosexual couples, infertility is defined as failure to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. We also provide care for single individuals and same-sex couples who require the use of donated eggs, sperm, or a surrogate. We consider it an honor to help all individuals and couples build their families, and we are here to
help you! We are proud to have the only laboratory in Rhode Island that can perform in vitro fertilization, or IVF. This state-of-the-art technology involves the fertilization of eggs outside the body and has the highest success rates of any fertility treatment options. Not all patients require IVF; some may conceive with the use of fertility medications or intrauterine insemination (IUI), in which sperm are placed in the uterus. For patients who require IVF, the process is more involved. First, an ultrasound is performed to visualize the ovaries and measure the number of antral follicles. These are tiny fluid sacs, each of which contains an immature egg. For the next one to two weeks, daily injectable medications are given to grow the follicles and cause the eggs to become mature. The eggs are then removed from the body with a small needle that is placed vaginally with ultrasound guidance. This procedure, called an egg retrieval, is done under anesthesia and is not painful. The number of eggs
obtained during each egg retrieval depends on many factors, including the patient’s age and underlying supply of eggs. The eggs are then fertilized, either by placing them with sperm or directly injecting one sperm into each egg under a microscope.
Once the eggs are fertilized, they start dividing and are called embryos. The embryos are grown in the lab over the course of three to five days, at which point one or more of them are placed into the uterus with a small catheter. Any extra embryos can be frozen and saved for future attempts at
pregnancy. They can be stored for many years and then thawed when needed. Success rates of IVF depend primarily on the age of the patient at the time that the eggs are retrieved. Although other factors also influence the chance of success, pregnancy rates decline with age due to reduced egg quantity and quality. Below age 35, the chance of pregnancy from just one round of IVF is approximately 50%. At age 40, the pregnancy rate is closer to 30% per attempt. Other factors that can influence IVF success include body mass index (BMI), tobacco use, and marijuana. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a well-balanced diet and regular exercise can help maximize the chances of success from IVF. Caffeine and even alcohol are acceptable in moderation, although your doctor may recommend minimizing these once you begin taking your IVF medications. The process of IVF can be incredibly stressful. Although stress does not directly impact
IVF success rates, it can take a toll on a patient’s overall wellbeing. I strongly recommend that all individuals or couples starting IVF consider speaking with a therapist. Most IVF clinics have social workers or psychologists who are experts in the field of fertility-related stress. I encourage my patients to take advantage of these resources early in the process. Ultimately, IVF is an incredible tool that has enabled many people to build their families. With that said, fertility treatment is a very personal choice. We at Women & Infants Fertility Center consider it our honor and privilege to help you navigate your options as they pertain to your family-building goals. We look forward to seeing you.

Specialized Orthopedic Injury Care Can Make Summer Healthier By Scott D. Allen, MD
With the calendar officially flipping to summer, many families are getting outside and back to their pre-pandemic activities. But while being more active offers a variety of health benefits, it also brings greater risk of injury. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, injuries associated with many sports like soccer, basketball, and football saw reductions of more than 60 percent during the pandemic in 2020. As these sports and other physical activities resume across Rhode Island, we should expect a substantial uptick in injuries, too. As new injuries occur in the coming summer months, it will be crucial to respond to them quickly, and to ensure that care is administered by expert providers who understand how best to opti-
mize recovery. To help adults and children who have suffered injuries to bones, joints, and muscles – including in accidents at work, at home, and at play – Ortho Rhode Island offers Ortho RI Express, an immediate orthopedic care service that treats acute orthopedic injuries such as sprains, strains, tears, and fractures. Ortho RI Express provides same- and next-day appointments with certified providers specially trained in treating orthopedic injuries. Not only does this specialized care improve the quality of treatment, it can help save patients time and hassle. Typically, emergency providers who treat an orthopedic injury will still recommend a follow-up appointment with an orthopedic specialist. Ortho RI Express eliminates this extra step by delivering immediate access to orthope-
Scott D. Allen, MD dic expertise from the start, ensuring that patients get the care they need when they need it, without the frustration of long waits with painful injuries. Their timely care also extends to evenings and Saturdays. Ortho RI Express is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at their centrally located Warwick campus, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
at their Providence and Wakefield offices. This convenience and ease of access are part of a commitment across all Ortho Rhode Island services to put the patient experience at the center of orthopedic care, from start to finish. To make a same- or next-day appointment, patients can simply call 401-777-7000 and choose option 1. Plus, Ortho RI Express accepts most major insurances, and a visit has the same co-pay as an appointment at the doctor’s office. And with their in-office advanced imaging technology like digital x-ray and MRI, along with their in-house physical therapy, patients can experience seamless care from diagnosis through rehabilitation. While Ortho RI Express offers a powerful solution for acute orthopedic injuries, it’s important to remember:
patients with life-threatening injuries, open fractures, excessive bleeding, head trauma, or spine injuries should go to the nearest emergency room immediately. Thankfully, these concerns are less common, and for the majority of injuries to bones, muscles, and joints that individuals may encounter this summer, Ortho RI Express represents a formidable first line of care. With sunny skies and warm weather here, it’s exciting for Rhode Islanders to return to the activities they enjoy the most. And while we can’t eliminate the risk of injury entirely, Ortho RI Express is a reliable resource for immediate access to timely, specialized orthopedic care that helps patients get back on their feet, and back to doing what they love.
The game of golf can benefit your health Golfers can rest assured that their time on the course is as healthy as it is fun. A recent experiment from Dr. Steve Otto, director of research and testing at The R&A, found that the average distance golfers walked during a round of 18 holes at the Royal County Down Golf Club in Northern Ireland was 6.6 miles. That’s great news, as walking has been linked to a host of health benefits, including improved cardiovascular fitness. TF218204

1. Which band originally called themselves The Young Aborigines? 2. What part did Meatloaf play in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” film? 3. Name the group that went through names such as Feedback and The Hype before settling on their final name. 4. Which Donna Summer song was used in the film “Thank God It’s Friday”? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Please lock me away, and don’t allow the day, Here inside where I hide with my loneliness.” Answers 1. The Beastie Boys. They once claimed that BEASTIE was an acronym for “Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence,” but later admitted they’d come up with that after they already had the Beastie name. 2. He played Eddie, the ex-delivery boy. 3. U2. Out of all names they considered, this was the one they disliked the least. U2 appeared on Rolling Stone magazine’s “The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time,” coming in at No. 22 on both the 2004 and 2011 lists. 4. “Last Dance,” in 1978. 5. “A World Without Love,” by Peter and Gordon, in 1964. The duo’s first single, taken from their debut album, was written by Paul McCartney when he was 16 years old.

This is not a bookshelf full of books. It is an antique tin box that held cookies (called biscuits) in England about 1905. Grocery stores in the past were very different. The use of automobiles, starting about 1910, changed the way folks shopped.

There are hundreds of different figural tin boxes that were made to hold the cookies by the English biscuit company Huntley & Palmer. They are often sold to be used as attractive boxes, but there are also serious collectors bidding for them at sales. This box sold for $270.

Before 1900, grocery shopping was done at a street where farmers gathered to sell their produce. Then the markets moved into large buildings that rented space where farmers and customers bartered for food. Some farmers moved to residential suburbs and opened small grocery stores. They sold staples, like flour, sugar and tea, as well as fresh food. Clerks took the order and packed it. But in 1916, the first supermarket was built in Memphis, Tennessee, and customers were able to choose their items, put them in a cart and take it to a cashier. That led to branding with eye-catching packaging and the modern chains of grocery stores. Huntley & Palmer, an English bakery, created tin boxes by the 1850s to ship and sell their boxed cookies, called biscuits, so they wouldn’t get broken. They started making the figural — and now very collectible — tins

in 1894 and made hundreds of different shapes. The bookcase tin was made in 1905, and this top-quality example sold recently for $270. *** My mother bought an Autumn Leaf wall pocket for me. I think it was part of the reproduction’s resurgence and not the original 1930s to ‘40s Autumn Leaf. Can you tell me what it might be worth? Autumn Leaf pattern was made by several companies. It was made exclusively for the Jewel Tea Company, a home shopping service, by Hall China from 1933 to 1978. Some kitchenware and teapots were reintroduced in 1985 and sold in retail stores. The Autumn Leaf wall pocket was made by China Specialties, a company in Strongsville, Ohio, that began offering limited edition pieces of Autumn Leaf in new shapes in 1990. They were made in Asia and are marked “Genuine China Specialties.” They sell for under $30. *** CURRENT PRICES Cut glass powder jar & cover, clear, cut crosshatching, fans & diamonds, round, squat, stand-up rim, American Brilliant Period, 4 by 6 inches, $35. Candy container, Village Church, tin lithograph, stained glass window graphics, cross on top, 2 by 3 by 4 inches, $125. Lunchbox, Beatles, Yellow Submarine, scenes, Beatles caricatures, metal, 1968, Aladdin, $215. Mechanical bank, image of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck, place a coin on Donald’s tongue, push button, and coin is deposited into bank building, 1940s-50s, 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, $485. *** TIP: Coffee or tea stains can be removed from a cup by scrubbing with salt on a sponge. “Kovels’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide” — the new 2021 edition with more than 11,500 prices, 3,000 pictures and many helpful tips — is available in bookstores and online, or visit www.Kovels.com for a special offer.

Cats Shouldn’t Get a Free Pass to Poop DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Could you explain why cats can poop in my garden and the owners are not responsible for them? Cats kill birds and chipmunks, and they dig in my garden. Children’s sandboxes get fouled by cats. Cat poop is really unpleasant and can spread diseases. It seems unfair that cat owners should get all the enjoyment out of them, but not have to be responsible for their messes. Why do cat owners get a free pass? What can be done to keep the cats from killing birds and leaving messes in my yard? — Pat in Spokane DEAR PAT: You’re absolutely right. Cats can wreak havoc on the local environment as they don’t limit their hunting to mice: A 2013 study estimated that cats kill billions of songbirds per year in the U.S. alone (www.smithsonianmag.com and search for “The Moral Cost of Cats”). Yet owners who allow their cats outdoors often don’t think that their sweet, adorable Fluffy could be a neighborhood menace. That’s one reason I constantly ask owners to keep their cats indoors. It’s also for the cats’ personal safety; they’re at risk of being attacked by bigger wildlife or other cats. Right now, there are two things you can do. First, deter cats from coming onto your property. Scatter a mixture of used coffee grounds, lemon peels and vinegar around the perimeter of the yard (pans of vinegar also work). Cover exposed ground in garden beds with river rock to discourage digging. Second, raise awareness in the community. Spread the word about the damage cats do, and what owners can do to prevent it. Do this by talking with your neighbors and speaking at town or HOA meetings. Get the word out so the entire community can address the problem. At Ortho Rhode Island, the future of orthopedic care is built around you.
• On July 16, 1863, the draft riots enter their fourth day in New York City in response to the Enrollment Act. Although avoiding military service became much more difficult, wealthier citizens could still pay a $300 fee to stay home. • On July 14, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett kills Henry McCarty, known as Billy the Kid. Garrett had been tracking the Kid for three months after the gunslinger escaped from prison only days before his scheduled execution. At the trial, the judge had sentenced Billy the Kid to hang until “you are dead, dead, dead.” Billy reportedly responded, “And you can go to hell, hell, hell.” • On July 15, 1903, the newly formed Ford Motor Company takes its first order, an $850 two-cylinder Model A automobile with a backseat. The car, produced at Ford’s plant in Detroit, was delivered a week later. • On July 13, 1930, France defeats Mexico 4-1 and the U.S. blanks Belgium 3-0 in the first-ever World Cup football matches, played in Montevideo, Uruguay. The World Cup has since become the world’s mostwatched sporting event. • On July 18, 1940, Franklin Roosevelt, who first took office in 1933 as America’s 32nd president, is nominated for an unprecedented third term. He would eventually be elected to a record four terms. • On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opens on former orange groves in Anaheim, California. Due to counterfeit invitations, thousands showed up and the opening did not go well. Food and drink ran out, and the steamboat nearly capsized from too many passengers. • On July 12, 1979, disco music died at Chicago’s Comiskey Park when a “Disco Demolition” night is held. Organizers grossly underestimated the number of fans who would want to blow up their disco records: a sellout crowd inside the stadium and 40,000 outside who stormed the field and lit bonfires on the diamond.
