It is with bittersweet and mixed feelings that I write this article. C&A Landscape Materials has had the great honor and privilege to be of service to the very best customers any company could wish for. Just about 25 years ago, this company was the dream child of my late husband, Al DiPrete. Sadly, in 2011 Al passed, but over the years it is a testament to that man that this place became what it is. Now we have decided to move on to new chapters in our lives, but we couldn’t do that without thanking you for being such a big part of our history. A very reputable company has opted to purchase C&A and continue to provide great service and quality materials. J&J Materials has an outstanding reputation in the landscape and hardscape industry. Their management has amazing plans for expanding product lines and providing the service and quality our customers have come to expect and deserve from us. The people at C&A want to thank each and every one of our customers (AKA friends) for their loyal and consistent support over these 25 years. We are only as good as our customers are. So that makes us great!!!! We sure will miss everyone and will always keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you very, very much.

Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted no matter how impossible. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy.

worse than no will? Q.What’sA poorly A. drafted one.
• On March 22, 1765, in an effort to raise funds to pay off debts, the British government passes the Stamp Act. It levied a direct tax on all materials printed for commercial and legal use in the colonies, from newspapers and pamphlets to playing cards and dice. • On March 21, 1804, the Napoleonic Code is approved in France. The Code strengthened the authority of men over their families, deprived women of any individual rights, and reduced the rights of illegitimate children. All male citizens also were granted equal rights under the law, but colonial slavery was reintroduced. • On March 17, 1834, Gottlieb Daimleris is born in Germany. In 1885, he and Wilhelm Maybach developed a new version of the four-stroke internal-combustion engine, which they attached to a wooden bicycle, creating the world’s first motorcycle. • On March 20, 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” is published. The novel was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.” • On March 16, 1903, Roy Bean, the self-proclaimed “law west of the Pecos,” dies in Langtry, Texas. Bean’s claim to fame rested on his often humorous and sometimes-bizarre rulings as a justice of the peace in western Texas during the late 19th century. • On March 18, 1933, American automaker Studebaker, then heavily in debt, goes into receivership. It eventually rebounded from its financial troubles, only to shut down the assembly line and transition out of the automobile business in 1966. • On March 19, 1957, Elvis Presley puts a down payment on a home for his parents, a southern Colonial mansion on a 13.8-acre wooded estate. With a $1,000 cash deposit against a sale price of $102,500, Elvis Presley agreed to purchase the home called Graceland.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Dorito” was hit by a car last year and left injured by the side of the road. A neighbor called me when he saw Dorito’s orange fur in the ditch, and I found him and rushed him to the vet. His treatment cost thousands of dollars, and he’ll never be the same healthy cat again. I’m angry that the person who hit him just drove on and never notified me, and I’m stuck with the bill. The police took a report, but nothing came of it. Why do people get away with running down animals with no repercussions? — Angry in New Hampshire DEAR ANGRY: I’m really sorry to hear about your cat, and I understand the anguish that you’ve suffered from watching him suffer so much. While laws vary by state, in New Hampshire there actually are repercussions for drivers who strike a dog and leave the scene without reporting the incident to police. A bill in the state legislature is being considered that will add cats to the current law. If the driver had stopped to try and aid Dorito or at least try to find his owner, that driver would likely have not faced any repercussions or even be held liable for striking your cat. That’s usually the case when a pet running loose — off leash or off the property -– is hit by a car. However, it would have been the decent thing to do for that driver to have stopped. I wish I had more to offer than words of sympathy. It’s difficult to see a pet in pain. Take good care of Dorito and help him to recover as much as he can. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

Eileen F. Hodge, 84, of West Greenwich, died February 12, 2020, at Brentwood Nursing Home in East Greenwich, RI, after a short illness. No services were held. Eileen was a well-known artist in Rhode Island. She could be found at the Scituate Art Festival in the fall every year. She was an active participant at the Wickford and Mystic art shows as well. Her art was displayed in art galleries through the state including Sheldon Fine Arts and Dryden Gallery. Her works featured all the historical buildings throughout the state and brought them to life. Many scenes of Roger Williams Park are among her works. All the lighthouses that adorn the shorelines of Rhode Island were painted by her. If she was to paint your pet, you would be assures the end results was “your” pet. Eileen enjoyed swimming. She could be seen every morning at McDermott Pool in Warwick for many years. She also enjoyed coloring at Coventry Senior Center. She was the wife of the late Richard Hodge and sister of the late Barbara. She leaves a son, Richard Hodge Jr. of Texas and two grandchildren. She was a humble and kind woman and her friends will miss her dearly. Peace Eileen!

by Jennifer Coates For many people who suer from chronic pain ~ either physical or mental, it often feels as though there will never be any relief, much less anything close to a “happy endingâ€?! For 28-year old Eva Lanoue, ďŹ nding a way to manage her pain following a serious accident became an all-consuming quest. She tried absolutely everything, including conventional medications whose side eects were more debilitating than the injury itself. Eva needed help, so she and her husband Michael embarked on a journey to ďŹ nd the answers they so desperately needed. Their deeply personal search led them to CBD. The Lanoues went to work researching everything they could ďŹ nd about CBD and the body’s endocannabinoid system. There was so much at stake in understanding how CBD-infused products worked. They learned that CBD is a naturally-occurring compound found in the ower of cannabis that helps restore the body to its natural state of homeostasis or equilibrium. It is a safe, non-addictive and completely legal substance ~ it is NOT psychoactive. CBD has been attributed to helping provide relief from everything from the anxiety and chronic pain that plagued Eva to stress, depression, migraines, PTSD, arthritis, ďŹ bromyalgia, and so much more. The use of CBD has found success with addressing the dangerous eects of inammation. Once the Lanoues discovered ďŹ rsthand the beneďŹ ts of CBD, their journey as a family took a dierent turn. It was no longer just a matter of ďŹ nding relief and respite from pain and anxiety, it was a matter of sharing their experience with a whole audience of fellow suerers. Thus was born The CBD Store.
Meet Eva Lanoue, seen here is a shocking before & after photo. The left photo is of Eva after trying seven different medications. The right is one taken after she discovered CBD-infused products ~ and she is now on no prescriptions! Visit The CBD Store in Warwick for more information.
In April of 2019, Michael opened this now busy store on Post Road. On any given day, there are streams of people coming in to learn more about CBD. Mike has become a fountain of knowledge. His extensive studies ~ compounded by years of witnessing the life-changing experience of his wife ~ make him a reliable and educated source. He has created a place where people can come to learn about CBD from a trusted source; a place that sold only the highest-grade, triple- tested products on the market. In fact, he even worked with professionals to develop his own brand of CBD products called CanameDÂŽ. For Mike, this is a personal mission.
If you want to know more about CBD, visit Mike at The CBD Store on 1845 Post Road in Warwick or call 401-360-7093. The store is open Mon. – Th., 10:00am – 6:00pm, Friday & Saturday, 10:00am – 7:00pm. Closed on Sundays. Read their extraordinary reviews on Facebook, Google and Yelp. For those who live in South County, there is no need to travel to Warwick. Come meet Eva Lanoue at The CBD Boutique in WakeďŹ eld. The store’s number is 401-515-7400 ~ check them out on Facebook! Come to The CBD Store for help. Come for answers. Make it personal.

you, as the symptoms you have are different from those reported. People with longstanding diabetes frequently develop a particular disease of the nerves, diabetic neuropathy. This almost always begins with sensation changes in the feet. I agree with your doctor that diabetes is the most likely cause. Seeing a podiatrist is absolutely a good idea. He or she can test you for this condition (usually a careful physical exam will make the diagnosis), in addition to looking carefully for any early signs or risk factors for injury or infection. You also should learn how to do a daily inspection of your feet and recognize the signs, so you can get to medical attention promptly should any damage to your feet occur. The podiatrist will make sure you have appropriate footwear. Many people with diabetes benefit from weight loss, but the important thing is to be sure your diabetes is under good control. This is achieved through good diet, regular exercise and medication, if needed, in addition to weight loss in people who are overweight. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to cancer, my prostate was removed about seven years ago. My PSA reading has increased since 2012 from 0.09 to 0.304. Should I be concerned? I am 78 years old and in relatively good health. — B.D. ANSWER: PSA readings can go up and down, but a threefold increase could mean that the cancer is coming back, and you should see the specialist taking care of your prostate cancer to discuss getting additional testing. Not having disease for seven years after treatment is a good sign, but the PSA test is pretty specific for cancer recurrence if two separate readings are above 0.2. You may need additional therapy, but only further investigation will show how concerned you need to be. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 63-year-old male diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. I am 5 feet, 11 inches and weigh 240 pounds. I have two stents and take Sprycel for the CML. My levels are good, and the coronary disease is under control. For a few years I’ve had what feels like “cotton balls under the skin in the area of the balls of my feet. Now it feels like it’s migrating to the arch. While not too uncomfortable, it is almost impossible to walk barefooted. Some type of foot covering is needed to keep from noticing the feeling. My doctor says it’s the diabetes, and to lose weight or see a podiatrist. Other than losing the weight, do you have any opinion about this? — N.M. ANSWER: Cotton-ball sensation is one way that many people describe the beginning of neuropathy, a general term for a variety of different conditions that affect the nerves of the body. In a person with cancer (like CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow) and a new symptom, it is always wise to consider whether it could be due to the cancer, the treatment for the cancer or from something else. In your case, usually CML is not associated with neuropathy. However, the medicine you are taking, dasatinib (Sprycel), has been associated with a severe kind of reversible neuropathy. I read the case reports of this condition carefully, and I doubt that is what is going on with

Salt & Pepper Shakers Looking for an inexpensive, amusing collection for a small display area in your house? Or perhaps an item to encourage your children to be collectors and go to antiques shows with you? Kids can learn a lot about prices, money and history without a cellphone. Salt and pepper shakers come in all sizes and prices, but the figural ceramic ones are the most fun for a beginner. Salt cakes into a lump in damp weather, so in the 1700s, salt was served in a small dish with a tiny spoon. Pepper was in a tall shaker or a caster. Most were made in thin pear shapes or cylinders. They usually were glass or silver.
I had a collection of fruit-shaped salt and pepper sets and kept them in a bowl where they looked like a salad. Next to the bowl was a cut-glass cruet for salad dressing.

But by the late 1800s, inexpensive novelty sets were popular, in shapes that did not match the dinnerware. Sports were popular, with ball and bat or mitt and glove sets. McCoy made a set from two different vegetables. There might be a Dutch girl and a windmill, or a pair of dogs. Animals and birds, fruit, miniature furniture, even toys or typewriters, movie stars and celebrities were inspirations for salt and pepper sets. You could tell which was the salt because it had at least five holes in the cap; the pepper had one or two. The salt often had a few grains of rice in the container to keep the salt dry. Glass sets were the rage in the 1930s.
You can find clear bottles with metal caps, McKee glass art deco square sets in amber, a green glass called jadeite, or ball-shaped ceramic sets to match Fiesta or Harlequin dinnerware. Enesco imported sets that look like mice or snails. Holt-Howard made pixies. Pick a theme and enjoy the hunt. Most sets cost less than $20. *** I have a dark purple Fenton glass candy dish with fluted or crimped sides. I was told it’s “Wistaria pattern and that Fenton intentionally spelled the word “wisteria incorrectly. Do you know why? There are two different Fenton patterns: “Wistaria and “Wisteria. However, your candy dish is Wisteria pattern. Wisteria is a stretch glass pattern made from 1921 to 1928. On the other hand, Wistaria is frosted glass with an acid-etched design, and it was made from 1937 to 1938. The design resembles stylized wisteria blossoms. Fenton may have called this pattern “Wistaria because it already had a “Wisteria pattern. *** CURRENT PRICES Pirkenhammer figurine, woman, kneeling, nude, arms on head, white, 1900s, 7 x 4 inches, $30. A taste for tradition: Celebrate St. Joseph’s Day in style by making your own zeppole By JAMES DIPASQUALE What could be more “Rhode Island” than zeppole on Saint Joseph’s Day? Being Italian, my family and I have always had zeppole on this holiday. A few years ago, I began making them for friends, family and my students, using online resources like YouTube to search for recipes. The big day is just a week away. Perhaps some readers would like to attempt to make their own zeppole this year! These pastries can be made at home if you’re willing to give it some time and patience. It’s never too early to start practicing – or too late to give it a shot – so I thought I would share my recipe with all of you! Zeppole di San Giuseppe 1 cup water 1 cup King Arthur all-purpose flour (if you want softer pastry shells, use pastry flour) 1 stick unsalted butter cut into 8 pieces 4 large eggs (you most likely will need to add 1-3 tbsp) ¼ tsp salt Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place the water, butter and ¼ tsp salt in a saucepan. Turn on the heat to high and stir the three ingredients until they melt. Then bring to boil. As soon as it starts to boil, turn off heat and add all the flour at once. Work quickly to stir over the hot element until it comes together. Then, turn the stove to medium (#5) and stir for three minutes. Get underneath the dough with the spoon, turn it over, and press down. Transfer the dough to a bowl. Use a hand mixer on low speed for two minutes to mix the dough and cool it down releasing the steam. Add one egg at a time, mixing with the hand mixer at low speed. Do this until you have incorporated the four eggs. Then add the additional egg (if you feel you need it) and mix at low speed until it’s a good consistency (glossy and thick and you can make a deep ridge with your finger that stays). Finish by mixing well at high speed just to be sure it’s incorporated! (Note: If you decide to use pastry or cake flour, this may change the amount of egg you will need – probably more.) Take the dough and spoon it into a pastry bag with a star tip attached. Use it to pipe the dough into thick circles onto a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Place in a 400-degree oven and bake for 2530 minutes. Do not open the door until the 22-minute mark when you check to see how brown they are and then decide how much longer they need. Leave them in longer for crispier shells. With five minutes left to go, open the oven and poke a hole in each one with a toothpick. Close the door and resume baking for the last five minutes. Then remove from the oven.
Wait about 30 minutes and then cut each pastry shell in half and add some crema pasticcera to both halves. Then re-assemble the pastries and decorate the top with more crema pasticcera with a pastry bag. Dust with powdered sugar and then top with a maraschino cherry. (Note: The shelf life of these pastries is short – serve within an hour or two after filling them.) Crema pasticcera 3 egg yolks ½ cup sugar 4 tbsp flour or cornstarch 2 cups milk 1 tsp vanilla Lemon and/or orange rinds Heat the milk on medium in a saucepan but do not boil. Meanwhile, in a bowl, whisk the sugar and eggs until pale and incorporated. Then add the flour to the bowl and whisk until incorporated. Add a ladle of the milk to the egg mixture in the bowl and mix well. For additional flavor, add lemon or orange rinds – or both – with the milk and keep them in during mixing. Slowly drizzle the rest of the milk into the bowl and mix well. Pour the entire mixture from the bowl back into the saucepan. Return to the burner and place on medium heat whisking constantly. Keep whisking until the mixture thickens well. Allow to heat to at least 180 degrees. (Once you see bubbles, let it go for a minute or so and take its temperature.) Once thick, remove from heat and add the vanilla and stir well. Allow to cool at room temperature and then place in the fridge four hours. James DiPasquale resides in North Providence and teaches at Burrillville High School. WHERE TO FIND ZEPPOLE Check out the following local bakeries for your St. Joseph’s Day treats: D. So, who won the fight between IGT and Twin River? You did. The numbers are big. The stakes are high. So it’s no wonder that competition for Rhode Island’s gaming business was intense. But as it dragged on, that competition evolved into something more powerful: collaboration. As we listened to state leaders, taxpayers and each other, we realized the true opportunity wasn’t in taking each other down, but in each of us stepping up. So that’s just what we’re doing. The jobs will stay—over 1,100 good-paying jobs. The investment will grow—$250 million committed to economic development including a bold expansion and reimagining of Twin River. The revenue will be protected—major upgrades to the gaming experience and back-end technology will ensure that the state can count on at least $300 million a year in gaming revenue for years to come. We are two ambitious companies. And while we both took some punches, it was all worth it to know that we will continue to support Rhode Island—the state we and our employees call home—for years to come.
Good Jobs. Great People. Better Deal.

Q:
Do you know if “The Orville” will be returning? We thoroughly enjoy this show and are looking for its return date. — N.M. The futuristic space comedy brought to you by Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”), who not only created the show but also stars in it, will be back for a third season, but not until late 2020. Sorry, a specific day or even month hasn’t been pinned down, but MacFarlane explained at the San Diego Comic-Con last summer that “the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise,” and that the delay between seasons would be “challenging for the network [Fox].” Hence, a deal was struck with Hulu to air the third season exclusively after a long hiatus. Hulu had been streaming “The Orville” after it aired on Fox, and apparently it was a big hit with its subscribers. According to Deadline.com, Craig Erwich, Hulu senior vice president of original programming, stated: “The Orville has a very loyal following on Hulu, so when there was an opportunity to bring a new season to our viewers, we jumped at it. I will see the first episode next week. We’ll monitor and evaluate the show as it goes.” *** Is it true that the Silver Surfer character will be in Marvel’s next Thor movie? — J.B. “Thor: Love and Thunder” isn’t set for release until fall of 2021, but the rumors are flying about which villains he’ll be up against. One is indeed the Silver Surfer, and it’s anyone’s guess who will play him, as the names Christian Bale, Keanu Reeves and Rami Malek all have been tossed around. Malek is reportedly being eyed to play the character in a DC film in which the Silver Surfer is the main character, not just a foe in the Thor project. As for “Love and Thunder,” Natalie Portman returns as Jane Foster alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, but in this fourth installment look for her character to take on a new persona as well. Comic book fans already know, but I won’t spoil it for you in case you don’t know.

Was the actress who plays Rosalind on “The Rookie” also on Nathan Fillion’s old series “Castle”? — D.E. Good memory! Yes, Annie Wersching has had regular and guest-starring roles on several primetime dramas and thrillers, including “Castle,” “Bosch,” “Timeless” and now ABC’s “The Rookie.” Her first speaking role on television was back in 2002 on “Star Trek: Enterprise,” but after that, like Fillion, she got a lot of experience memorizing dialogue on a daytime soap (she as Amelia on “General Hospital,” and Fillion was Joey on “One Life to Live”). Wersching is good at playing psychopaths. She played one on “GH,” and on “Castle” her character was a prison doctor who fell for a murderer and became his accomplice. On “The Rookie,” she plays a serial killer awaiting her fate on death row. Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@gmail.com, or write me at KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Change is still dominant for Rams and Ewes, both in the workplace and their private lives. This is also a good time to look at a possible relocation if that has been one of your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Doing things for others is what you do well. But don’t forget that Bovines thrive on the arts, so make some time for yourself to indulge your passion for music and artistic expressions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While the Romantic Twin considers where to go for his or her upcoming vacation, the Practical Twin will start making travel plans now to take advantage of some great bargains. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your sensitive nature helps you deal with a difficult emotional situation. Be patient and continue to show your sincere support wherever (and for whomever) it is needed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re making progress as you move through some unfamiliar territory. And while there might be a misstep or two along the way, overall you’re heading in the right direction. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some good news arrives — and just in time to remind you that you’re making progress. Perhaps things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d prefer, but they’re moving nevertheless.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to step back and assess the facts that have recently emerged to see where they can be used to your advantage. Also, don’t hesitate to make changes where necessary. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should begin to experience some support from those who now agree with your point of view. This should help counter the remaining objections from die-hard skeptics. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t let your aim be deflected by trivial matters as you try to resolve a confusing situation. Take time to find and thoroughly assess the facts before making any decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The possibility of moving to another location has come up. But before you dismiss it as unworkable, it’s worth checking out just in case it does have some merit after all. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New relationships — personal or work-related — show mixed signals. Best to assume nothing. Let things play themselves out until you have something substantive to work with. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your ability to make needed changes without causing too much, if any, negative ripple effect comes in handy when dealing with a sensitive matter either on the job or in the family. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you like things to go smoothly, you’re not shy about making waves when you believe the situation calls for it. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
