The Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus: In the past, I have asked many favors. This time, I ask you this very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted no matter how impossible. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do Americans spend so much money on their pets? Couldn’t they save more money if they didn’t indulge their dog or cat with designer sweaters, booties, premium dog food and trendy grooming? — Caryn B., via email DEAR CARYN: It’s true that Americans spend more on their pets than anyone else in the world. According to the American Pet Products Association, spending in 2019 reached $95.7 billion. Owners spend most of their money on pet food and treats, totaling $36.9 billion last year. Another expensive item is veterinary care and related product sales (like medications), with $29.3 billion spent. Why do we spend so much money? Ask any owner, and they’ll give you roughly the same answer. Our pets are a part of our family. We are dedicated to them, just as they are dedicated to us. We don’t want to see them suffer, and like any beloved family member, we are willing to spend far more money on their health and comfort than we would on ourselves. Designer doggie sweaters aren’t just stylish, they protect our dogs from the elements, and the higher-priced sweaters tend to be more comfortable and better fitting. Booties prevent cuts to the pads on their paws when walking in the city or on icy pavement, minimizing pain and possible infections. High-quality dog food costs more, but the payoff is in better overall health and a longer life. And grooming, for the most part, plays a key part in keeping pets healthier and more comfortable. (With the exception of scrotum glitter. I’m not quite sure about that one.) So sure, we’re spending a lot of money. But Americans look for a balance of value for what we spend, and clearly, pet owners are finding great value in spending a bit more to keep their beloved pets healthy and happy. Paddy and the Pig Famous mascots, logos and characters from books and songs are being tossed aside in this modern, more politically correct world. The Aunt Jemima of today doesn’t resemble the original. Chief Wahoo of the Cleveland Indians baseball team made his last appearance at the end of the 2018 season. But has it gone too far? It has been suggested that the Fighting Irish Leprechaun, mascot of the University of Notre Dame sports teams, be dropped as not politically correct. Though derived from Irish folklore, some think he is a negative stereotype that is insulting to those of Irish background. As always, there are two sides to the argument, and so far, those who like their leprechaun are winning. This leprechaun probably was inspired by “Paddy and the Pig,” a caricature used by British political cartoonists since the 1840s to represent Ireland and the Irish people. Paddy was the ignorant peasant; the pig was the backward agricultural nation. Paddy wore breeches, a patched coat and a strange hat. Most of the political arguments were about Irish Home Rule, a hot topic in Victorian England politics. The comic Paddy was re-created as a toy. A version made by Lehmann, a German toy manufacturer, depicts Paddy trying to ride an uncooperative pig that moves back and forth while Paddy holds on for dear life. It sold at a Bertoia auction in New Jersey for $1,320. *** Is there an easy way to date an unused postcard? I know the amount of the postage stamp has often changed and there are lists of the prices and dates. But when were photographs rather than color pictures used? When was it called a “postal card”? Postcard collectors know and have listed the table of postage and postcard changes online, and they are in our book “Kovels’ Know Your Collectibles.” A postal card is an early card called “pioneer” with no picture used from 1893 to 1898. A government printed card had printed post-

Add half of the lamb, and brown on all sides, about 7 to 8 minutes total. Remove the lamb to a bowl and repeat with the remaining oil and lamb. Remove the second batch of lamb and add it to the bowl. 2. Add the onions to the pot and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the garlic, potatoes, carrots and the remaining teaspoon of salt and pepper. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Return the lamb to the pot with the barley. Stir to combine. 3. Add the water or chicken broth. Bring to a boil. Then, decrease heat to low, cover and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes or until the liquid is absorbed and the lamb and barley are tender. Add the parsley. Stew will be thick.

If you’re planning to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day holiday at home, you are part of growing number of Americans who like to commemorate the day with a family dinner. A national St. Patrick’s Day survey found that regardless of family roots or Irish heritage, the holiday is more about food and family than drinking. More than 30% of respondents said they celebrate at home or at friend or family member’s house. Less than 14% of those surveyed celebrated at a bar or local pub. This year, you may want to serve a traditional Irish dinner. The main course is an all-in-one-pot lamb stew with root vegetables and pearl barley with a side of Northern Irish potato bread. Here’s a little history about these Irish recipes. IRISH STEW: This dish originated from the old ways of cooking over an open fire. A good Irish stew should be thick and creamy, not swimming in juice. Adding potatoes and pearl barley gives the stew body and texture, and makes it a hardy, main-course meal. Carrots are typically added for extra color and interest. The authentic Irish recipe calls for mutton, which is usually an older lamb with a tougher texture of meat, which made it perfect for stewing. I suggest using lamb from Australia, which is readily available at most American grocery stores. Australian lamb is juicy, tender and raised to a specific size and weight producing a quality product that is slightly leaner than beef and less expensive than American domestic

lamb. Australian lamb is typically grass-fed and has a phenomenal flavor and texture. For more information about Australian lamb, beef and goat, or more Australian lamb recipes, go to www.trueaussiebeefandlamb.com. POTATO BREAD: Northern Ireland’s love of the potatoes is part of a rich legacy of dishes such as this recipe for potato bread (also called fadge or farls). Typically, this bread recipe incorporates leftover boiled potatoes, but leftover mashed potatoes will work just fine. The finished bread is like a flat bread in texture. Try these traditional Irish recipes and use Australian lamb to add a modern twist to your St. Patrick’s Day menu!

Learn the sequence of colors in the spectrum. My artist friends use the catchy name “Roy G Biv” to help children remember. The letters stand for Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. Then, discover the basic spectrum indoors on a sunny day. Pour water in a clear glass, tilt it sideways and move it slowly along the edge of the kitchen counter until you catch rays of sun shining through the water. A ribbon of rainbow colors will appear on a white floor or on a white sheet of paper placed on the floor. Look closely to see that the

Recycle clear plastic water bottles into artistic rainbow “Discovery Bottles,” each filled with items representing a conventional color of the spectrum. While I rarely purchase water in plastic bottles anymore, I purchased a 6-pack of Voss artesian water for this eye-catching activity. The labels peel off easily, and the lids are handsomely designed in gray. I used the six bottles for the basic colors, combining blue and indigo. Children over 4 years old will enjoy rooting through their craft supplies and toys for unbreakable items to drop and stuff into each bottle by color. We used pipe cleaners twisted in spirals, crayons, ribbon; tissue paper wadded into balls, buttons and wooden beads — which add the bonus of nice sound when shaking. Sort items in six piles by color, then fill each bottle. Drizzle glue around the outside mouth of bottles and screw on caps tightly. For play, name the colors, line them up in order of the spectrum, and describe contents by shape. Make up rainbow stories. Display your rainbow on a shelf. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. by Jennifer Coates It is an unusual sight to behold in today’s modern high school classroom ~ a room full of students who are completely, totally absorbed in their work. Here in the Advertising, Marketing & Design program at the Regional Career and Technical Center, a group of twenty students are working diligently on a computergenerated design assignment. Their work is self-paced and challenging, but for today’s tech-savvy pupil, it is also familiar and interesting work. Each student is positioned in front of high-end iMacs which are grant-funded, industry- licensed and top-of-the-line. Everything in this classroom is high-tech and current because the students here are preparing for “real lifeâ€?, and they need to know how to use the latest and best equipment and software in the industry. This class, like every class in the Career and Tech Center in Coventry High School, is designed to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s careers. On any given day, students, who range from freshman to seniors, can be found working on progressively more diďŹƒcult assignments here in the Advertising, Marketing & Design classroom. The program trains students to “use basic art media, digital design and graphics technology to design, produce and market printed media.â€? Students in this innovative program learn industry skills and content through “nationally accredited PrintEd curriculumâ€? and then apply these concepts of graphic design using multimedia formats. These skills prepare students for jobs in the ever-evolving and in-demand world of graphic design. The computer room is only part of the continuum of instruction provided here. In an adjacent room, instructor Crystal Violette and her assistant Liz guide more advanced students through a

state-of-the-art lab of industry-level machines which were all recommended by an advisory committee of industry experts. This equipment includes everything from silk screen printers and embroidery machines to vinyl cut & plot machines and 3D printers. The lab produces items that the students themselves have designed including such promotional products as coee mugs, apparel, business stationery, signage and more. The products here are often commissioned by local businesses or for community events ~ it is professional-quality work. All the students who participate in the diverse programs at the Career and Tech Center are learning real-life skills that will translate into real-life jobs. Knowing that these classes

can lead to meaningful careers gives these students an added incentive to perform at their highest level of ability. With the rising demand for skilled tradesmen and women in hundreds of occupations, classes such as this Advertising, Marketing & Design program make increasing sense for those who will soon enter today’s workforce. If you have a high school-aged student who would be interested in any of the Career Center’s programs or if you would like to know how your business can partner with the students here, contact its longtime director Lori Ferguson at 401-822-9499, ext. 287 or visit their website at www. coventrycareercenter.com for more information.

On the fence about holding an open house? Open houses are one way to gain the interest of potential buyers but they’re not right for everyone. To some, the possibility of a hoard of strangers wandering through their home is just too much to bear. Others view open houses as a fantastic opportunity to showcase their home to interested buyers en masse. If you’re on the fence, here are some pros and cons to consider in making your decision:

make sense but things like cameras and recording devices have specific rules. Always consult with your Realtor before employing specific security measures. Pro: Open houses aren’t just for buyers. Your agent can schedule an open house for brokers and agents so they can see firsthand, whether your home has the features that could interest one or more of their buyers.

Pro: Open houses offer a valuable opportunity to promote that your home is for sale. Even if a sale doesn’t occur directly, the resulting pre-promotion and word-of-mouth can help spread the word to potential buyers. Con: Many times, buyers begin their home search by visiting open houses. Those not quite ready to make a move may feel less pressure visiting an open house than scheduling private showings with a real estate agent. While these visits can sometimes be a direct route from “maybe I’ll start seeing what’s out there” to “I have to have this house,” the reality is, for these buyers, that’s not the norm. Pro: On the other hand, an upcoming open house can entice someone who has been actively looking and is on the fence about making an offer to make a move. The pressure of a looming open house can be the push needed to help them come to a decision, particularly in the current market where the supply of homes for sale is low

Con: Be aware that events beyond your control can render your scheduled open house useless. For example, despite careful planning and prepping, bad weather or road work could limit its success.

OPEN HOUSE and competition for available homes is fierce. Con: At an open house, anyone can walk through your home. They may or may not be financially qualified to buy it, they may just be nosy with no intention of buying at all, or worst of all, they may not be trustworthy, putting the security of your things, your home and your

agent in jeopardy. Minimize the risk by locking up or removing drugs, valuables and important items. Also, talk with your agent about the steps they take to minimize theft or damage and enhance security both at the open house and after it. (Open houses provide an opportunity for thieves to see what they may want to come back for at a later date.) Sign-in in sheets and accompanied tours obviously

Still on the fence? Talk to your Realtor. As members of the National Association of Realtors, they have access to plenty of information on best practices, security measures and protocols as well as avenues to promote your open house and home sale in general. Put their experience to work for you. And remember, the best odds of an open house resulting in a quick sale, is to be sure your home has great curb appeal, is sparkling clean and is priced right from the outset. Homeowners choose to work with real estate agents to facilitate the process of listing, showing and selling their homes.

How agents and sellers can work together Selling a home can be stressful. Despite this, 5.51 million existing U.S. homes were sold in 2017, according to data from the National Association of REALTORS®. In many cases, homeowners choose to work with real estate agents to facilitate the process of listing, showing and selling their homes. Real estate agents are valuable assets. Agents have neighborhood knowledge, are educated in pricing trends, can filter phone calls or emails from buyers who aren’t serious, and can organize all of the people necessary for a closing. Real estate agents provide many services that the average person may not have the time nor the experience to handle. When selecting an agent

to sell a home, homeowners may not understand that the terms real estate agent and REALTOR® are not interchangeable. Although both must be licensed to sell real estate, the main difference between a real estate agent and a REALTOR® is the latter is a member of the National Association of REALTORS®. NAR ensures that members subscribe to a certain code of ethics. There are many qualified agents, but an agent cannot do his or her job well without some help on the part of the homeowner. These tips can make the process of selling a home go smoothly. • Price the home correctly. Homeowners should trust the agent’s ability to price a home for the market. Everyone wants to get the

most money possible, but listing the home for more than it’s worth may cause it to sit unnecessarily for several weeks or months, which could raise red flags among potential buyers. • Market the home. A real estate agent will list the home via a multiple listing service (MLS) on a private website, in newspapers, and wherever else he or she feels is pertinent. Homeowners can share the listing via social media and word of mouth to help increase the chances of selling the home. • Be available. Limiting the time an agent can show the house to potential buyers is in no one’s best interest. Sellers should be ready and willing to open their homes, which is the best way to make a sale. An agent may suggest a lock box so the home can be shown when homeowners are not on the property. • Make suggested renovations. Agents know which features can make or break a sale. Homeowners should be amenable to certain suggestions, such as neutral paint colors, removing personal effects and clearing clutter. • Give recommendations. Real estate is a commission-based industry. Agents often tirelessly put in hours and only reap rewards if the house is sold. A homeowner who was satisfied with an agent can then recommend that person to friends or family. By working with real estate professionals, homeowners can sell their homes quickly. METRO

When granite countertops or shiny, stainless steel appliances beckon homeowners from the display areas of home improvement stores, it’s tempting to gear remodeling thoughts toward the items that will add flair and decorative appeal to a home. Even though most improvements add some measure of value, deciding which are the best investments can be difficult. Return on investment, often referred to as “ROI, varies depending on the project. Frequently, the projects that seem like the best investments don’t bring the greatest rate of return, while those that seem like smaller projects bring substantial returns. Real estate professionals routinely weigh in with their expert advice, and homeowners can couple that advice with Remodeling magazine’s annual “Cost vs. Value Index to reap the greatest financial impact from their renovations. The following were some of the projects that garner the greatest ROI.

Open the door to improvement Installation of a new steel door on the front of a home can have a large impact on the resale value of a property. The ROI ranges

from 123 percent at the highest, to 86 percent at the lowest — which is still a considerable investment return for such a simple project. Match the door’s style with the style of the house for the best value. Turn up the kitchen heat An attractive kitchen can encourage buyers to overlook some of a home’s less attractive components. In the kitchen, replacement countertops, wall color changes, new cabinetry and flooring offer the biggest ROI. Dreaming of a new bedroom Remodeling magazine also points to creating an attic bedroom to increase home value. The ROI of an attic remodel that adheres to code can garner an 83 percent ROI. Home maintenance projects There’s little good to improving the aesthetic appeal and functionality of a home if there are existing structural or maintenance issues, warn experts. Many buyers have a strict budget for a house, and those buyers may be more likely to buy a house with little or no maintenance issues. Such buyers will then upgrade the kitchen or baths themselves, according to

For Effective Advertising Call 821-2216

The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for an open house. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps. De-personalize the home Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may

not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items. Improve the exterior HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows

and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary. Put things in storage Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms. Create a hotel experience Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty

washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents.

Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Disappointed about something that didn’t go your way? Cheer up. Look at the reasons it happened, and you could find a valuable lesson about what to do (or not do!) the next time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to do some reassessing of plans and goals — even how you considered redoing your bathroom. The point is to be open to change if change can improve things. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take some time to learn who is the right person (or persons) to approach and discuss your ideas with for your new project. Also, reserve time to prepare for an upcoming family event. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a demanding situation, as you recently did, could drain much of your own emotional reserves. Take time to relax and indulge yourself in some well-earned pampering. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The regal Lion might feel that she or he is above emotional displays. But showing your feelings can be both liberating for you and reassuring for someone who has been waiting for you to do so. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An emotionally needy person might make more demands than you can cope with. Best to ask for some breathing space NOW, before resentment sets in and makes communication difficult.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unexpected spate of mixed signals could cause serious schedule setbacks. Best to focus on straightening everything out as soon as possible and get everyone back on track. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be aware that someone in the workplace could try to use a disagreement with a colleague against you. If so, be prepared to offer your side of the story with the facts to back you up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected challenge to a previous decision can be unsettling. But your reservoir of self-confidence — plus your loyal supporters — should help carry the day for you. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While the idea of making some sort of major move in the near future continues to interest you, don’t overlook a new possibility that could be emerging closer to home. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful not to base an upcoming decision on gossip or anything you might hear if it can’t meet provable standards. That’s true regardless of whom the source might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to do some solid reassessing early in the week before you can close that sensitive situation. A new job-related opportunity could present itself later in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: You are extraordinarily sensitive to people’s feelings, and you’re always ready to offer comfort if necessary. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
