St. Jude’s Novena

May the sacred heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved, throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, help of the helpless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day and by the 8th day your prayer will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you St. Jude for answering my prayers. A.A.

HOLLYWOOD — When Tom Hanks came down with COVID while filming “Elvis” in Australia, production was shut down and he and his wife returned to the U.S. Once he recovered, he hit the ground running. “Moulin Rouge” director Baz Luhrmann reopened filming “Elvis” once it was safe to resume. Hanks and “Elvis” (Austin Butler) made up for lost time, and it’s now due June 24. Hanks then assumed the role of Geppetto for Robert Zemeckis’ live-action “Pinocchio,” with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the voice of Jiminy Cricket. Hanks and Zemeckis (now 70) won Oscars for “Forrest Gump” (1974) and collaborated on “Castaway” (2000) and “Polar Express” (2004). Hanks next reported to Wes Anderson for another of his all-star-cast films, “Asteroid City,” with Margot Robbie, Scarlet Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Maya Hawke, Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum, Liev Schreiber and Matt Dillon. As if he isn’t busy enough, Hanks is currently producing the war mini-series “Masters of the Air” (related to “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific”), with Steven Spielberg and his Amblin Entertainment for Apple+. Also working on a TV anthology series for Apple+ is Meryl Streep, who is starring in “Extrapolations,” along with Tobey Maguire, Marion Cotillard, Forest Whitaker, Sienna Miller, Kit Harrington, Matthew Rhys, Daveed Diggs and David Schwimmer. *** Last week we told you about Melissa Joan Hart’s two-year contract with Lifetime to produce, direct and star in made-for-Lifetime films, following her success in Hallmark’s “Mistletoe in Montana.” Hallmark has a stable of stars they use for most of their original productions. The undisputed queen of Hallmark could well be Lacey Chabert, who developed, executive produced and starred in the recent six-hour “Wedding Veil Trilogy.” Lacey first earned her stripes on the

Hallmark film star Lacey Chabert soap “All My Children” and in the TV films “Gypsy,” starring Bette Midler, “A Little Piece of Heaven,” opposite Cloris Leachman, and “What If God Were the Sun,” opposite Gena Rowlands. She began making Hallmark films in 2010 and has starred in 30 original films since then. As soon as word came out about Hart’s two-year deal, Hallmark also gave deals to Danica McKellar (“The Wonder Years”) and Jen Lilley, who went from the film “The Artist” (2011) to “General Hospital” (2011-2012) and “Days of Our Lives” (2013-2018), three Lifetime and 12 Hallmark movies from 2015-2022. Also signed was Trevor Donovan, a regular on “Days of Our Lives” (2007) and as Teddy in “Beverly Hills 90210” (2009-2013), followed by 12 original Hallmark films. Hallmark has a contract roster of players in the tradition of MGM, which in its heyday claimed to “Have more stars than in the heavens!” Guess you can say Hallmark has more stars than in their cards!

Prayer to the

BLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail). O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the sea, help me and show me here in, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times.) Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you. KAM

ST. JUDE’S NOVENA

O Holy St. Jude, apostle and martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need: To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition; in return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked, with publication promised. Say 3 Our Fathers, 3 Hail Marys, and 3 Glories for 3 days, and your petition will be granted. This novena has never been known to fail. It has helped me. HQT

Signs of

Snow-covered lawns can be pretty, but heavy snowfall can contribute to winter lawn damage.

M METRO

other Nature can be harsh on a lawn, and it’s up to homeowners to nurse their lawns back to health after they endure the elements. That’s often the case when winter ends and homeowners uncover signs of damage to their lawns. Homeowners cannot begin to repair winter lawn damage until they learn to identify it, and the following are some telltale signs that winter took a harsh toll on a landscape. • Wilted grass: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring

bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of deicing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass. • Brown patches: The National Association of Landscape Professionals

notes that brown patches in a lawn often develop after heavy snowfall. Such patches tend to develop where large piles of shoveled snow were deposited, so homeowners can inspect alongside driveways and walkways. The NALP advises homeowners to rake away part of the brown patches first. If green tissue is emerging beneath, then the lawn will likely be fine in due time. However, if the area beneath is not green and surrounding areas are already turning green, homeowners may need to rake up dead tissue before applying topsoil to the affected spots. Once topsoil is spread, some grass seed can be spread and the grass should regain its green glory. • Gray or pink grass: Another indicator of winter lawn damage linked to

snow is gray or pink grass. The NALP reports that this is a byproduct of snow mold caused by lingering snow. Action may be unnecessary, as the NALP notes these circular patterns often go away on their own. If not, raking the affected areas might be enough to get the lawn on the road to recovery. If the issue continues to linger after raking, a topsoil application and subsequent seeding may be necessary. These are three common signs of winter lawn damage in areas where snowfall is significant during the coldest months of the year. Homeowners concerned about their damaged lawns are urged to contact a local landscape professional to correct any issues that linger into spring. GT224832

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Put your restlessness to good use by indulging the Arian love of exploring new places and seeking new challenges. There also could be a new romance waiting to be “discovered.” TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise message from someone in your past could lead to a long-awaited reunion with a once-close friend. Also, look for a workplace problem to be resolved in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your self-confidence is rising, and that should be a significant factor in helping you adjust to a new social situation, as well as adjusting to a series of changes in the workplace. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Turnabout could be lots of fun when someone who previously accepted your tender, loving care without question now suggests that he or she wants to start taking care of you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Put the lessons you learned from past disappointments to work in planning your future. The way ahead opens to opportunities “purrfectly” suited to the adventurous Lion. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to renew contacts with family members and/ or old friends who somehow slipped off your personal viewing screen in recent years. Travel also is favored.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Most problems surrounding that recent personal situation have been resolved, and that means you should move on to other things that are important to you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Spend this weekend recharging your physical and spiritual energies. When you return to your workaday world, you’ll be ready to take on that new project. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful how you advise a troubled friend. Even your wise counsel could be misunderstood. Better to suggest that he or she seek professional help. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Family problems once again dominate and, once again, everyone seeks your guidance in these matters. Later, you can indulge in some much-needed relaxation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some mixed signals create confusion in the workplace. Best advice: Ask for explanations before you attempt to deal with any of these matters on your own. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A patch of roiling water in the workplace could be threatening, but stay the course and you’ll soon be clear of it. Then go out and have a great time with loved ones. BORN THIS WEEK: Your extraordinary leadership qualities mark you as someone people can turn to for guidance in difficult situations. © 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

4 popular colors for 2022 Home design trends come and go. The fleeting nature of such trends can make it hard for homeowners to commit to a particular style, especially if they want their home decor to stay as current as possible. Paint provides one way to stay current and refresh a home’s interior without investing in new furniture and home accessories. Paint trends change, but these colors are already making the rounds in 2022. • Very Peri: Very Peri is the Pantone® 2022 Color of the Year. A brand new shade of blue, Very Peri was designed to rekindle some of the qualities that the color blue represents while simultaneously complementing a modern perspective. The home design pros at HGTV recommend pairing Very Peri with neutrals like taupes and creams or deeper shades like navy or brown. • Evergreen Fog: The paint experts at Sherwin-Williams note that this shade of green is symbolic of nature and a color associated with revitalization and growth. Those characteristics make it great for

homeowners who are looking to create a new beginning with their home interiors, particularly in relaxing spaces like living rooms and bedrooms. • Breezeway: Breezeway from Behr® is another popular color that provides a soft look. Breezeway is the Behr® Color of the Year for 2022 and is described as a silvery green shade with cool undertones. Behr® touts the versatility of Breezeway, which the company indicates inspires awe in bedrooms, living rooms or hallways. Breezeway pairs well with creamy white, taupe, softened black, and nuanced pink. • Gilded Linen: Gilded Linen from Valspar® is ideal for homeowners who want a color to organize and connect spaces throughout their homes. Gilded Linen is a minimalist white that mixes well with natural elements like wood and greenery. The soft tone of Gilded Linen makes it suitable in a variety of rooms, which is one reason why it’s so popular in homes with open floor plans.

The Feeling is

Trees benefit a landscape by serving both aesthetic and utilitarian functions. A home surrounded by healthy green trees can be a sight to behold, and those same trees can benefit surrounding plants and wildlife at the same time. As appealing as trees are, not all trees and landscapes make for the perfect match. The Arbor Day Foundation notes the importance of planning when designing a landscape. Planning ensures the trees homeowners ultimately choose for their properties will grow well in the soil and moisture present in their yards. Careful consideration of a handful of variables can help homeowners determine which trees will make the best fit for their properties. • Height: Homeowners must consider the projected height of a tree before planting it. Avoid trees that will bump into anything when fully grown, as that can adversely affect surrounding greenery and pose a safety hazard. The ADF’s tree sizing guide can be accessed at https:// www.arborday.org/trees/rightTreeAndPlace/size.cfm and serves as an invaluable resource for homeowners who want to plant new trees around their properties. • Canopy spread: Trees grow out as well as up, so it’s important to consider their potential width at maturity as well. The ADF sizing guide can help homeowners get an idea of how wide a tree is likely to be at maturity. Trees that spread out quite a bit don’t necessarily need to be avoided, but it’s important that they’re planted far enough

apart so they don’t adversely affect surrounding plants. In addition, wide trees that are planted too close together can make the landscape appear crowded, taking something away from its aesthetic appeal. • Growth rate: Growth rate is an important variable because it can affect how quickly homeowners will see changes in their landscapes. Homeowners who want to plant for privacy can consider trees with quick growth rates or purchase more mature trees that are already near full growth. Those who are not in need of instant transformation can try trees with slower growth rates, which
