• On May 30, 1899, amateur bandit Pearl Hart and her boyfriend Joe Boot hold up an Arizona stagecoach. After taking $421 in cash from three passengers, Hart took pity on them and handed each back $1 so they could buy something to eat when they arrived in town. • On May 28, 1902, Owen Wister’s “The Virginian” is published. It was the first “serious” Western. The book became a sensation almost overnight, selling more than 1.5 million copies by 1938 and inspiring four movies and a Broadway play. • On May 26, 1927, Henry Ford and his son Edsel drive the 15 millionth Model T Ford out of their factory, marking the famous automobile’s official last day of production. The “Tin Lizzie” averaged about 17 mpg and could travel up to 45 mph. • On May 27, 1939, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees is turned away from Cuba. The ship sailed close to Florida, hoping to disembark there, but a State Department telegram stated that the asylum-seekers must first “await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for and obtain immigration visas.” After appeals to Canada also were denied, the ship was forced to sail back to Europe. • On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, become the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. News of their achievement broke on June 2, the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. • On May 31, 1962, in Israel, Nazi SS officer Adolf Eichmann is executed for his crimes against humanity during World War II. Following the war, Eichmann had fled to Argentina, where he was found by Mossad agents. • On May 25, 1977, Memorial Day weekend opens with an intergalactic bang as the first of George Lucas’ blockbuster “Star Wars” movies hits American theaters.

Clever ways to use leftovers The spread of COVID-19 has upended many people’s lives. As with other virulent health crises, the practice of social distancing has been recommended to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 outbreak. One way to socially distance oneself is to avoid unnecessary trips to places where the public may congregate, such as grocery stores. Some people visit supermarkets and other food stores every day, especially if they don’t meal plan or shop for the week. According to the Time Use Institute, the average shopping trip takes 41 minutes and people go food shopping an average of 1.5 times per week. Any additional time spent at the grocery store increase the likelihood of contact with others, potentially increasing shoppers’ risk of contracting coronavirus as well. Therefore, people taking steps to stay at home may have to rethink the way they purchase and use food. Being more mindful of food waste and putting leftovers and ingredients to use in new ways can help stretch food further and reduce the need to make frequent trips to the grocery store. Consider these ideas to make use of leftovers. • Save those vegetables. It’s easy to scrape a half-portion of uneaten vegetables into the trash thinking it can’t be used. Instead, combine it with other vegetables accumulated throughout the week. Many play well together and can be

mixed into casseroles, omelets, soups, and stirfry recipes. • Create new meals. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers. • Think beyond dinner. Leftovers can be collected at any time of day and used later on. Cold cuts can be chopped and used to make a stromboli with some refrigerated pizza dough. Save Belgian waffles from breakfast and top with breaded chicken fingers for a delicious

chicken-and-waffles meal for lunch or dinner. Leftover roasted potatoes and scraps of ham can be used in a breakfast hash. • Stuck on starches. Turn extra rice from dinner into arancini (rice balls) for a snack on another day. A leftover sweet potato or two can be mixed with butternut squash to make a sweet and healthy mashed side dish. Mashed potatoes can be transformed into potato croquettes or potato pancakes. Finding new ways to use leftovers means minimal waste and fewer trips to the supermarket. TF205952

It is hard to resist the beckoning big eyes, soft fur and lovable kisses of a puppy. When that tail begins wagging, it can be easy to forget how much attention and work puppies require. Puppies love to learn about the world and are naturally curious and energetic. Puppies also can become easily bored and mischievous if not given chances to expend their energy. Puppies do not know what is right and wrong in their new environments and have to learn such lessons through trial and error, often getting into trouble along the way. However, puppy owners can take steps to curb potentially troublesome behaviors. 1. Provide a lot of exercise. A tired dog is a well-behaved dog, offer many experts. The American Kennel Club says that puppy parents should speak with their vets and/or trainers about what is a reasonable amount of physical activity for their dogs. Activity to burn off excess energy is vital. 2. Offer mentally stimulating activities. Problem-solving toys and challenges can keep puppies focused on healthy skills that build cognition to exercise

KAREN RIP Sweet Girl 5/18/2020 Grand-Pup of Donna Zarrella

the brain. Hide-and-seek, fetch and food-reward games can be great ways to exercise puppies’ brains. 3. Keep an eye out. Puppies like to explore the world around them, and that can mean chewing, digging, soiling, and other negative behaviors. The advice site Daily Puppy recommends that owners watch their puppies and keep them in their sight as much as possible. Crating is an effective way to keep puppies out of trouble when owners cannot offer constant supervision. Crates can be safe havens when treated in the right manner. 4. Puppy-proof the home. Look around the house for possible hazards. Move trash into hard-to-reach areas, erect gates to block restricted spaces, address cords and other electrical hazards, and clear counters or tables of easy-to-reach food scraps. 5. Use positive reinforcement. Rewarding dogs when they do the right thing rather than punishing them when they behave badly helps puppies learn manners and how to become good members of the family, offers the AKC. Teaching is also a way to offer exercise and stimulate dogs’ minds. 6. Understand the breed. Some dogs are bred for their unique behaviors. For example, a bird dog like an English setter may seek out prey in the yard. Certain concessions may need to be made to keep puppies comfortable. Offering alternative activities that tie into this natural instinct also can work. Keeping puppies out of trouble can take work, but as they become full-grown dogs, they will learn and negative behaviors will be abandoned.

by Jennifer Coates Peter Caswell, a native Rhode Islander and the owner of Rhode Island Shellfish, Co. is passionate about a lot of things ~ first and foremost, he loves his wife Jeanine and his boys Brayden and Jase. His second love is spending time in the kitchen where he once learned to cook alongside his mother. He is even enthusiastic about his longtime job as an offshore tugboat captain off Staten Island. No matter where Peter Caswell sets his feet, however, his heart is ~ and always will be ~ with the sea. From the time he was a young boy, Peter has loved digging for quahogs off the Rhode Island shore and in the plentiful waters of Narragansett Bay. Today, that passion is still fulfilled as he is drawn to the coastline to dig with his own sons and father, David. Harnessing his lifelong love of digging for quahogs led Peter to a new venture in 2016 ~ one that is seeing great returns now, even in the midst of a pandemic ~ the founding of RI Shellfish Co. What started in 2016 as a way to bring Peter’s culinary talents to life and to satisfy his love of cooking has evolved into this exciting and enduring business. Peter built a commercial kitchen which he affectionately named Annie’s Kitchen (after his beloved mother) and received a USDA “grant of inspection so he can sell his homemade shellfish dishes wholesale. It is here where he creates gourmet masterpieces with shellfish of all kinds, with a special emphasis on his favorite, locally- sourced quahogs. Peter has long felt that Rhode Island’s lowly quahog has taken a proverbial “back seat to the increasingly popular oyster. It

has become one of Caswell’s personal missions to revitalize the quahog and to showcase its many varied preparations, including his famous “Stuffies. As a proud Rhode Islander, Peter wholly supports local quahog harvesters. He uses the freshest ingredients and “straight-offthe docks clams for all his dishes. Using long-held secret family recipes, including his late mother’s well-guarded Stuffies recipe, he makes some of the best, most authentic shellfish dishes around. One might say they have to be tasted to be believed! Peter’s Stuffies join a diverse and mouth-watering array of shellfish options. These include Fish & Chips, Clam Chowders, Clams Casino, Lobster Mac & Cheese, Oysters Rockefeller and

Tap Your Inner Chef With DIY Recipes What I have always loved about being an American is that through it all, we somehow manage to keep the faith, persevere and stand together. It used to be that going to the grocery store was a routine and mundane task. Now with the COVID-19 pandemic, we all must think differently about going out to buy food and adjust the way that we prepare favorite family recipes based upon what is available. This is where do-it-yourself dinner recipes come in handy. Basically, a DIY dinner recipe is about finding a way to retain the flavors of the recipes you love while using the ingredients that you have on hand. If you have always wanted to free yourself from the restraints of a recipe, now is the time to do it! Think of the current lack of ingredients as permission to tap into your inner chef. To ease into creating your own DIY dinner recipes, start with making a pot of chowder. No one really knows the origin of the term “chowder,” but whether it came from French, Caribbean, Portuguese or Brazilian cooks, the basic meaning is connected to the large pot that the meal is cooked in. Chowders were introduced to North America by immigrants from France and England more than 250 years ago. Native Americans called the dish “chawder,” which was interpreted as “chowder” by early settlers and fishermen in New England. The original versions of the dish consisted of a pot filled with a mixture of fresh fish, salt pork, leftover hardened biscuits (which were used as a thickener), onions, water and whatever spices were available. A chowder is a delicious way to use the

ingredients you have on hand to create a meal that does not require extensive prep or simmering for hours. My recipe for Seafood and Sweet Corn Chowder uses the basic techniques for making a chowder, but is designed to accommodate the need to vary ingredients based upon what you have on hand or what you can purchase at the store. Whether you decide to make a seafood or vegetarian chowder, feel free to create your own version of this DIY dinner.

SEAFOOD AND SWEET CORN CHOWDER If you don’t have all the vegetables, seafood or spices on hand, omit or substitute the ingredient with what you do have. This chowder will still be delicious without it!

mother cooking or a boy roller skating. The price of the small toy was a penny, so they were named “penny toys by today’s collectors. About 175 antique penny toys were sold in an important Bertoia auction recently, and prices were much higher than a penny. The lowest price was $180. The highest price was $11,400 for a walking camel with a well-dressed Arab rider. The top of the rider’s turban could be turned to make the clockwork toy move. There were several toys showing a boy or a girl at school sitting at the traditional bench attached to a desk. The child’s arm moved and opened the top of the desk to show candy hidden inside.

Children have always wanted to imitate the activities of people they see. So, toys have been made for centuries that are dressed to look like friends and, if possible, let them pretend to cook, play or work like grown-ups. In Germany, toy factories made small colorful tin toys from about 1880 to 1914 that could move and imitate a

I know the amount of the postage stamp has often changed and there are lists of the prices and dates. But when were photographs rather than color pictures used? When was it called a “postal card? Postcard collectors know and have listed the table of postage and postcard changes online, and they are in our book “Kovels’ Know Your Collectibles. A postal card is an early card called “pioneer with no picture used from 1893 to 1898. A government-printed card had printed postage, a privately printed card required a stamp, and a divided-back card was used from 1907 to 1914. Photochrome cards were used after 1939. Collectors call them photographs, although many are lithographs with a shiny finish. Real photo cards were used since 1900. If you want to sound like an expert, refer to them as RPPC. Used cards can be dated by the amount of the postage stamp; the postmark; a two-digit postal code, used after 1943; and a five-digit ZIP code, used after 1963. *** CURRENT PRICES Clock, Petal style, green, blue, orange, composite, enamel, metal, style of George Nelson, 17 1/2 in. $75. Who had a No. 1 hit with “Johnny Angel”? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “She was more than a woman, a goddess for all to see, All I ever needed was her right here loving me.” Answers 1. The Weather Girls. They started as backup singers, then found their own path to success with a name change and the release of “It’s Raining Men” in 1982. 2. Those were the last two songs released by Buddy Holly before he was killed in a plane crash in 1959. J.P. Richardson (the Big Bopper) and Ritchie Valens also died in the crash. 3. The Spencer Davis Group. They made the name change in 1964 because Davis was the only one who liked to do interviews. 4. Shelley Fabares, in 1962. She spent her teenage years playing the daughter on “The Donna Reed Show” (1958-64). 5. “Faded Pictures,” a collaboration between R&B singers Case and Joe. King Features Weekly Service

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old white male. I take one 20-mg pravastatin per day to manage my cholesterol. One of the side effects is joint pain. Are you aware of a substitute that does not have this joint pain side effect? — H.L. ANSWER: Statins are one of the most common medicines used, and although they have relatively few side effects, so many people take them that there are many reported untoward effects. Muscle aches are common. Muscle breakdown is serious and, fortunately, rare. But joint aches are not a common side effect. In the package insert, “arthritis” is listed in less than 1% of people. Of all the statins, pravastatin tends to have relatively few side effects. It is metabolized differently from how the others are, so have a discussion with your doctor about taking a different statin, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor). Lipitor is much more potent than pravastatin (Pravachol), so the dose you will need is likely to be much lower. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion on screening for ovarian cancer in a woman with a family history (in my case, a sister)? One gynecologist stressed an annual ultrasound, while the other discouraged me from doing so. I am worried that if I wait until symptoms develop, the cancer might be pretty advanced. — W. ANSWER: I really understand why people with increased risk for ovari-

an cancer are interested in screening. Unfortunately, we still don’t have any screening tests, such as an ultrasound or CA-125 blood test, that are good enough to recommend yet. I hope this changes soon. Promising work is progressing. Consider genetic testing for a familial cancer syndrome, such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome. People with one of these cancer syndromes are at high enough risk that screening may be of benefit, and there are ongoing studies to help identify the best strategy. Speak to your gynecologist about a referral to a genetic counselor. If you test negative for these genetic syndromes, you are at lower risk (but unfortunately, even low-risk women still may get ovarian cancer). You certainly should be vigilant for even mild symptoms of ovarian cancer; these are nonspecific and may include abdominal discomfort, bloating or swelling. Urinary urgency (a sense of needing to get to the bathroom right away) also should prompt a visit to your gynecologist, more so than in people without a family history. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible that when immersed in water, you absorb it through your skin? Whenever I spend more than 30 minutes in the pool, I later have to urinate more than when I don’t spend time in the water. Can the absorbed water travel to kidneys? Can the chemicals added to pool water do some damage? — E.M. ANSWER: Water is not absorbed to any appreciable effect when the body is immersed. The reason you urinate more may be due to unnoticed swallowing of pool water, which is very common in swimmers. Don’t worry about the chlorine in pool water. The amount of chlorine is similar to or only a bit higher than most tap water, and is not enough to be dangerous.

Improving a home’s curb appeal A n attractive front entrance area gives a home curb appeal that invites both guests and potential home buyers. Upgrading a home’s exterior can be as simple as painting or as complex as installing new windows or adding a patio. Inspiration for a curb appeal “makeover” that reflects the owner’s budget and decorating choices are easy to find online. Stop by the nearest Woodcraft store for tools and supplies, along with helpful advice from the staff, or visit Woodcraft. com to shop and read how-to blogs and articles. One of the easiest and quickest ways to boost curb appeal is to paint (and repair if needed) a home’s front door, molding and trim. Painting garage doors, porches, shutters, doorsteps, flower boxes, furniture, mailboxes/stands, and window trim are other potential projects, as is changing the front door hardware. ■

Returns on home improvement projects vary. In its annual Cost vs. Value Report, Remodeling magazine notes the projects that yield the best returns on investment in a given year. But a host of factors, including the type of market (buyers’ or sellers’) and the region where the home is being sold, ultimately combine to determine if homeowners’ investments in home improvement projects will provide the returns they were hoping for. Though there’s no way of guaranteeing a home improvement project will yield a great return, real estate professionals often cite improving curb appeal as an excellent way to attract prospective buyers and potentially get the asking price or more when selling the home. Improving curb appeal makes even more sense in today’s real estate market, when many people do their own searching via real estate websites such as Trulia or Zillow. When using such sites, buyers will likely be less inclined to click on a listing if exterior photos of the property are not eye-catching. Various projects, including tending to lawns and gardens, can improve curb appeal. An added benefit to focusing on landscaping to improve curb appeal is it promotes spending time outdoors in spring and summer. In addition, many lawn- and garden-related home improvement projects need not require professional expertise.

REPAIR & PAINT Woodcraft offers these products and ideas for more repairing and painting. • General Finishes Milk Paint is a premium interior/ exterior mineral-based paint premixed in more than two dozen colors. It is so durable it does not require a topcoat. However, Woodcraft Product Development Manager Kent Harpool suggests using General Finishes Exterior 450 as a sealer for exterior uses. The 450 is fortified with UV absorbers to stabilize the finish and built-in mildewcide to retard mold and mildew growth. • Krud Kutter TSP Substitute will clean and degloss almost any surface prior to painting so that paint adheres better. • System Three Sculpwood Epoxy Putty is a twopart epoxy putty that can be used indoors or out. Mold it, shape it or use it to repair carvings, antique picture frames or even windowsills. Be sure to add a coat of General Finishes Exterior 450 to seal your work. • Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue is waterproof, yet it cleans up with water. It allows eight minutes of open assembly time and offers an application temperature as low as 47 F. • HOMERIGHT Super Finish Max and Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayers spray most solvent or waterbased products — latex paint, milk paint, chalk paint, furniture paint, stains, and finishes. The Finish Max is ideal for small- to medium-sized projects, while the Super Finish Max is more powerful and covers a wider range of projects and thicker paints and varnishes with less thinning required. • HOMERIGHT Spray Shelters are good for furniture projects (large shelter), as well as smaller accessories (small shelter). 3 ways to use your lawn to improve curb appeal 1. Maintain a lush green lawn. Lawns that fall into disrepair may not give buyers a correct impression about how homeowners maintained their homes. Lawns with multiple dead spots and grass that appears more brown than green may lead many buyers to assume that the home’s interior was equally ill-cared for. Maintaining lush green lawns is not as difficult as it may seem. Applying fertilizer and aerating at the appropriate times of year (this varies by region) can promote strong roots and healthy soil, making it easier for grass to survive harsh conditions like drought. When watering in summer, do so in early morning or evening so as little water is lost to evaporation as possible. 2. Address brown patch. Even well-maintained lawns can fall victims to brown spots. According to the lawn care professionals at TruGreen, lawns in regions with hot temperatures and high humidity can be infected with brown patch, a common lawn disease that is caused by fungus, which can produce circular areas of brown, dead grass surrounded by narrow, dark rings. Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences notes that removing dew that collects on grass leaves each morning, which can be accomplished by mowing or dragging a water hose across affected areas, can be an effective way to reduce brown patch. Home-

unique mailbox and stand, or flower containers; and adding or expanding a patio area/porch require a large investment of time and money. Look for these products to help with these replacement and building projects. • Lightweight and quiet, yet easily portable, the Rolair AB5 Air Buddy, 1Ú2 HP Compressor is a durable companion for your weekend projects. • Use the GREX Green Buddy 18-gauge, 2” Brad Nailer for trim and moldings, light wood assembly, window beading, scribe molding, and door and window casings. • For precision sawing, efficient sanding, power cutting, accurate filing, scraping, cleaning and polishing, and more, consider the Fein MultiMaster Start Q with a pinless Starlock mounting system and easy snap-in accessories. • Take SawStop safety, quality and precision directly to your project work area when you choose the portable SawStop Jobsite Saw with Cart. owners without much lawn care experience can consult professional landscapers to address the issue. But those looking to sell their properties should note that buyers often walk the grounds of homes they are considering buying. So addressing any issues on the lawn should be a priority for sellers. 3. Confine dogs to certain areas. Dog owners may want to let their pets roam free in their yards. But homeowners about to put their properties up for sale may want to confine their four-legged friends to certain areas. That’s because dog urine can be high in nitrogen. Nitrogen itself is not harmful to lawns, but in high concentrations it can contribute to yellow or brown spots. Also, highly acidic dog urine may even adversely affect pH levels in the soil. Curb appeal can go a long way toward helping homeowners sell their homes, and a lush lawn can be used to catch the eye of prospective buyers. Lighting is a key component of curb appeal Curb appeal can affect prospective buyers’ perception of a home. When addressing curb appeal, homeowners may be inclined to focus on features that are easily seen from the street during the day. But what can a homeowner do to improve on his or her home’s nighttime aesthetic? Outdoor lighting is one aspect of curb appeal that is often overlooked, advises the home improvement experts at The Spruce. Homeowners may fail to recognize the importance of how proper illumination can provide their homes with a warm glow and make it look beautiful after the sun has set. For example, think of how cozy and inviting neighborhoods appear during the holiday season when homes are strung with twinkling lights. Homeowners can replicate that look all year long with lighting elements. Lighting for evening hours also helps maintain a safe environment for people who are visiting the property. Illuminating walkways and doorways provides a clearly visible and safe

path to and from the home. The following are a few ways to improve outdoor lighting. • Focus on architectural features. Outdoor lighting can focus on the external features of the home’s architectural style. Use light to draw attention to interesting gables, dramatic roof lines, dormers, or curved entryways. • Play up landscaping. Stylish lighting can highlight trees, shrubs, pathways, gardens, and all of the elements of softscapes and hardscapes on a property. The lighting experts at Vernon Daniel Associates say that soft lighting can make homes feel warm and cozy. Uplighting trees or other elements can add a dramatic effect. • Light up all doors. Make sure that doors, both entry and garage, are properly lit for ease of entry and egress from the home. Safety.com, a home and personal security resource, says a home burglary occurs every 15 seconds in the United States. Installing motion-activated lights or lights on timers can deter break-ins.

For Effective Advertising Call 821-2216

Consider using home automation to control porch lights and other outdoor lights remotely, if necessary. • Create entertaining areas. Outdoor lighting can be used to extend the hours residents can spend outside. This is great for entertaining and can be an excellent selling point. Homeowners are urged not to overlook outdoor lighting as a vital part of their plan to improve curb appeal.

Creating your own backyard oasis Our backyards are some of the best places to spend the summer months, especially if you’re practicing social distancing and are tired of being cooped up indoors. Fortunately, it’s possible to transform your outdoor living space into a secluded, openair retreat. Bring the indoors out. We often hear about bringing the outdoors inside, but the reverse is also true when designing a luxurious extension of your home. Homey, lived-in touches can take your outdoor space from sterile and unfinished to cozy and inviting. Think patterned throw pillows, fluffy blankets for chilly evenings, outdoor rugs, colorful lanterns, and decorative accessories like painted terracotta pots or metal tins. Invest in comfy furniture. What’s the best part of your living or family room? Chances are it’s your comfortable couch or recliner. To recreate the same feeling, splurge on some soft furniture that will make you want to stay outside for hours reading a book or working remotely. A pool or spa can help transport you somewhere far away without leaving your home. A pool can help you and the kids get some exercise while swimming laps, while a spa can soothe tired muscles after a long day hunched over your laptop. To reduce energy costs and increase longevity, consider using Nudura insulated concrete forms, which provide superior insulation. ICF pools also can be custom-made to accommodate any design, making them a very versatile and efficient way to build pools. Go wild with greenery. Live plants can help you feel connected with nature, and tending to them can help you feel relaxed yet productive during isolation. A vertical garden can add visual interest, while trees and shrubs can provide shade and character. Aromatic herbs like lavender or rosemary offer pleasant scents and can spice up your cooking. And don’t be afraid to cut some flowers from your garden to place in vases or pots for beautiful finishing touches. Find more information at nudura. com.

Lawn and garden businesses see demand rise during pandemic By DANIEL KITTREDGE So many staples of spring and summer life in Rhode Island will be different, or absent, this year due to the pandemic. Festivals, parades and fireworks displays have been called off, while it remains uncertain when summer camps, beach days and visits to parks can resume. Outdoor dining has resumed on a limited basis at many restaurants, but others remain closed or open solely for take-out. What won’t change for homeowners is the desire to keep up, and spend time in, their yards and gardens. For many who have unexpectedly found themselves at home, the current crisis has afforded the small consolation of having a chance to catch up on overdue projects or previously unnoticed needs. “We’re actually really, really busy right now because everyone is home and noticing things they probably weren’t paying as much attention to, said Laurie Brandt of Coventry-based All Seasons Maintenance & Construction. Brandt and her husband, All Seasons founder and president Don Brandy, provide a range of lawn maintenance, landscaping and outdoor construction services – the design and installation of walkways, patios and fire pits, mulching and planting, shrub trimming, “really anything related to the outdoors. The company mostly serves communities in the Kent County area – Warwick, Coventry, West Warwick – although it will go to cities and towns across the state for its patio and fire pit work. While the business has seen steady business during the pandemic, Brandt said the kind of work being sought has shifted. There has been a “definite uptick in construction projects, she said, while the maintenance side of the business has slowed down. The reason? People who now find themselves at home are, in many cases, getting a lawnmower or other equipment and doing that work themselves. “They don’t know when they’re going back to work, she said. As a result, Brandt said All Seasons has adjusted its workforce, using members of the lawn maintenance crew on the construction

side for two days a week. “Thank God the guys have been really understanding ‌ They’ve been great,â€? she said. Customers spending so much time at home has produced another trend as well. Places where people spend the most time outdoors – patios and fire pits in particular – “seem to really be the popularâ€? projects for customers at present, Brandt said. Those projects are a favorite of Don’s, she added: “He loves designing it and creating it and watching it really come to life.â€? Kurt Wilcox Jr. at Hopkins Hill Nursery in West Greenwich said his business – which sells plants ranging from small perennials to large evergreen trees, along with mulch and soil, other landscaping materials and holiday dĂŠcor – said he, too, has seen a surge in customer interest. “To be honest with you, a lot of people are shopping. We’re having one of the best years we’ve ever had,â€? he said. Asked what has been most popular among shoppers, Wilcox chuckled and said: “You want a laugh? It’s really blocking out their neighbors.â€? As people spend more time on decks and patios, it seems, they are seeking ways to enhance their privacy – and Wilcox said screening plants have been in high demand. Flowers, mulch and other related materials are also moving quickly, he said, a testament to the new focus many have placed on their gardens. In terms of the business of doing business, Brandt and Wilcox both said their approach has shifted. Brandt said All Seasons is expanding its social media outreach, adding an Instagram profile to its existing Facebook page. And in addition to shifting their responsibilities to meet demand, workers have also adjusted to the current situation from a safety standpoint – wearing masks on the job and practicing social distancing. Wilcox said it’s “tough being outsideâ€? in the current climate, and to do business without traditional customs such as handshakes. Hopkins Hill Nursery asks customers to wear masks and practice social distancing, he said, while one person at a time is allowed inside its office. HOLLYWOOD — George Clooney and Netflix quickly finished shooting “The Midnight Sky on Feb. 21, just before Hollywood shut down. The film, with Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, David Oyelowo and Sophie Rundle, is a post-apocalyptic tale about a lonely scientist (Clooney) in the Arctic, who races to stop Jones and her team of astronauts from returning home to a mysterious catastrophe. Timely. Matt Damon hurriedly got his two films in the can before the shutdown. In “Stillwater, due in November, a father (Damon) travels to France to help his daughter (Abigail Breslin), who’s been arrested for a murder she didn’t commit. In “The Last Duel, directed by Ridley Scott and written by Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener, he co-stars with Adam Driver, Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve) and Affleck. It’s based on a true story from 14th century France, where a knight (Damon) is ordered to fight a duel to the death with his squire (Driver), whom he has accused of raping his wife (Jodie Comer). It’s due for release Christmas Day. *** “Joker best actor Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix hasn’t chosen his next project; however, “C’mon, C’mon, written and directed by Mike Mills (Oscar nominated for the screenplay of “20th Century Women), was completed in January before his Oscar win. It co-stars Gaby Hoffman (a child actress in “Sleepless in Seattle, “Field of Dreams and “Uncle Buck). It wasn’t so long ago that Joaquin announced on a talk show that he was quitting acting. Now since “Joker, his price has risen to new heights. Sandra Bullock’s price also soared after she won her Oscar. In 2018 she made “Ocean’s Eight and “Bird Box, but nothing in 2019. Now she’s working with director Nora Fingscheidt on an untitled project based on the 2009 British TV series “Unforgiven. Sandra plays an ex-convict trying to rebuild her life post-prison. She’s also

George Clooney producing the film. *** Glenn Close finished shooting director Ron Howard’s Netflix film “Hillbilly Elegy,â€? with Amy Adams, in January. It’s about three generations of an Appalachian family. Close was due to start shooting the movie version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s award-winning musical “Sunset Boulevardâ€? this summer, but now due to the shutdown they’re hoping to begin filming by the end of the year. Rob Ashford will direct. Laura Dern, this year’s best supporting actress Oscar winner (for “Marriage Storyâ€?), hasn’t signed for any new projects. Her “Jurassic World: Dominionâ€? completed shooting before the shutdown and is still set for release June 11, 2021, while they add special effects. However, co-star Chris Pratt’s scifi film “The Tomorrow War,â€? due out Christmas Day, has now been pushed back to July 23, 2021. On a happy note, Netflix has picked up 20 million new subscribers. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be a bit shaken by a friend’s request. But before the Lamb leaps to conclusions, insist on a full explanation. You still might say no, but at least you’ll know what you’re saying no to. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Seeing red over those nasty remarks by someone with an ax to grind? Of course you are. So get out there and give your supporters the facts they need to get the truth out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A changing situation should get you to reassess your vacation plans and make any adjustments as soon as possible. And don’t fret — the change most likely will turn out for the better. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t put off dealing with any negative feelings that might be left over from a recent confrontation. The sooner all is resolved, the sooner you can move forward with fewer complications. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas might feel the urge to redecorate their dens, and that can turn into a good opportunity to strengthen family ties by putting the whole pride to work to make it happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Look for the most efficient way to get a job done quickly and well. Taking more time than you need to make it look more challenging is a short-sighted move you might regret later on.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A pesky problem should be dealt with immediately so you can put your time and effort into something more important. Someone from your past could have significant news for you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A workplace situation becomes a lot more bothersome than you’d expected. Be careful not to be pulled into all that anger. Look for support among others who also want to avoid trouble. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up, lonely lovers, wherever you are. Just when you thought you’d been deleted from Cupid’s database, the chubby cherub proves that’s just not so. Congratulations. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A casual relationship could take a more serious turn. Are you ready for it? Your stars say you are. Paired Sea Goats also will find a renewed richness in their relationships. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Meeting a collaborator with new ideas seems to be a dream come true. But for both your sakes, be sure all your legal i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed before you start working together. PISCES (February 19 to March 21) A romantic overture flatters the usually unflappable Fish. But since it’s a sincere from-the-heart gesture, go ahead and enjoy it. A minor health problem responds well to treatment. BORN THIS WEEK: You have the warm heart of a Taurean and the sensitivity of a Gemini. You would make a wonderful leader. So go ahead: Run for office. Š 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
