LARGE USED WOOD STOVE with blower. $500 OBO. 823-7499. The cost of a DUI conviction depends on where the offense took place and the circumstances surrounding it, but men and women arrested for DUI can expect to spend thousands of dollars in fees, penalties and associated costs related to their DUI convictions. According to the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, first-time DUI offenders can expect to spend around $8,900 for their transgression, and the organization acknowledges that estimate is conservative. Fines and penalties, attorney’s fees, court costs, insurance premium increases, and restitution fund expenses are among the many factors the ADP considered when determining their estimate. And those costs might just be the upfront costs. The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles estimates that the average cost of a DUI for first-time offenders in that state is closer to $25,000. That estimate includes the cost of SR-22 insurance, which the Alaska DMV estimates at $2,000 per year for five years. SR-22 insurance is a vehicle liability insurance document required by motor vehicle agencies in many states. The document is necessary for high-risk insurance policies, such as those whose policy holders have been convicted for DUI

Savory Pumpkin and Sage Soup This savory spin on everyone’s go-to autumn gourd is perfect for an evening in the garden. For the Soup: 1/4 cup olive oil 3 large sweet onions, sliced 3 cloves garlic, chopped 2 large leaves sage, chopped 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated and peeled 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 quarts lower-sodium vegetable or chicken broth 3 (15-ounce) cans pure pumpkin 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper For the Sage and Shiitake Garnish: 1 inch oil 24 small sage leaves Kosher salt 7 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stemmed and very thinly sliced 1. Make the Soup: In 5-quart saucepot, heat oil on medium. Add onions. Cook 40 minutes or until deep golden brown, stirring occasionally. Add garlic, sage, ginger and nutmeg. Cook 5 minutes or until garlic is golden, stirring occasionally. Add broth and pumpkin. Heat to simmering on high, scraping
up browned bits from bottom of pot. Reduce heat to maintain simmer; cook 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. With immersion blender or in batches in blender, puree soup until smooth. Stir in lemon juice, salt and black pepper. Makes about 10 cups. Soup can be made and refrigerated up to 2 days ahead. Reheat on medium. (If soup is too thick, add water or broth for desired consistency. Season to taste.) Makes 8 servings. 3. Make the Sage and Shiitake Garnish: In 2-quart saucepan, heat oil on high until hot but not smoking. Add sage leaves to oil. Fry 1-2 minutes or until leaves are browned, stirring occasionally. Thanksgiving Novena to
ST. JUDE
O Holy St. Jude Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ. Faithful intercessor of all who invoke this special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and three Glory Be’s. Publication must be promised. St Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. It helped me. Thank you St. Jude for answering my prayers.

Many people list advancing their careers among their goals at the dawn of a new year. For some, that might require getting a new job. People look for new jobs for a variety of different reasons. One of the primary motivators to look for a new job is to earn more money. Others are interested in trying a new field. The employment recruiting and networking resource The Balance: Careers indicates that the average person now changes jobs 10 to 15 times in their professional lives. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that most people now spend 4.2 years in a current job, which is down from 4.6 years in 2014. Although some people may be tempted to leave a job with a bang, they should exit with class and professionalism. No one knows what the future brings, and it’s best to leave a job on solid terms. With this in mind, here’s how a person can change jobs successfully. • Draft a letter of resignation. Clearly communicate your decision to leave the organization. Follow the proper chain of command and show respect by addressing the person to whom you directly report. Clearly communicate your intent and future plans, highlighting when changes are expected to take place. • Choose the right time. Timing is everything, and some times are better for leaving a job than others. Project Management, a consultant group, says to wait until important projects are finished, rather than bailing out in the middle of crucial work. • Keep an open mind. Some employers may be blindsided by an employee’s desire to leave, particularly in cases when said employee never communicated with a supervisor about the desire for more responsibility or to discuss something that may not be working. A boss who respects your work and values you as an asset may make a counter-offer. Hear him or her out and weigh your options. • Give plenty of notice. While two weeks’ notice is the norm, leaving more time for an employer to find your replacement, and helping to train this individual, is a sure sign of respect for your current employer. Changing jobs can be stressful and awkward, but it can be done in a way to ensure good relations with an existing employer for years to come.

SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER
Our employees have spoken. “We are a proven, successful partner to the state. Please continue this economic development partnership. It breaks my heart to think of another dark building in Providence that people refer to as ‘the place IGT used to be’.” Amy Morin, Sr. Director, Lottery Marketing, IGT
“The loss of 1,000 high paying jobs would be a devastating blow to the economy that would probably take years to overcome.” Ed Gilbert, Sr. Site Operations Manager, IGT
Our executives have spoken. “Rhode Island is at the center of the lottery technology ecosystem, and there is no question IGT is the vendor of choice in the US.” Jay Gendron, Chief Operating Officer, Lottery, IGT
Now we look forward to an answer. Through seven public hearings and over 35 hours of testimony we have made it clear that we love Rhode Island, are committed to being a true economic partner and have struck a fair and good deal for the state. It’s also clear that we have worked hard to make the state’s lottery systems that produce a crucial source of state revenue a model of stability and growth. And, no one wants to interrupt that. We’ve made promises and kept them. Now as the legislature decides on the future of our relationship, we hope they choose to keep our jobs, our expertise and our passion right here where they belong. Listen to our employees testify about their dedication to IGT, our local communities, local charities and the state of Rhode Island at IGT.com/RhodeIsland.

4 Simple Way s To Trim Your Energy Bill This Winter The cost of home ownership can be considerable. One of the expenses that hits first-time homeowners the hardest upon moving into their new homes is the monthly energy bill. While utility bills for apartment dwellers rarely break the bank, those bills grow considerably when men and women are suddenly lighting, heating and cooling an entire house. Come winter, utility bills can be especially harsh on homeowners’ budgets. But there are some simple ways to trim utility bills no matter how low the mercury dips in the coming months. 1. Embrace technology. Technology can help homeowners control energy costs in various ways. A programmable thermostat allows men and women to determine when their homes’ thermostats turn on so they are not paying to heat an empty home. In addition to programmable thermostats, homeowners can purchase real-time electricity monitors that allow them to track usage and monitor individual rooms and circuits so they can determine where in their homes, if anywhere, they are needlessly wasting energy. In lieu of a porch light you need to leave on all night, install motion-detecting lights so you aren’t paying to light porches and walkways that are not being used. 2. Inspect windows and doors. Windows and doors are often to blame when energy bills start to skyrocket. As homes age, cracks can develop around windows and doors, allowing precious and expensive heat to escape. Caulk around any windows that have cracks (you may feel a draft around such windows) and replace ineffective weatherstripping around doors, which is noticeable if light is visible around doors’ edges.

3. Cover the water heater. Water heaters can quickly lose heat, and that can contribute to higher heating bills as winter temperatures plunge. Water heater
blankets are an inexpensive yet effective investment, as they can help water heaters retain heat longer, producing lower heating bills as a result. 4. Lower the water heater temperature. Speaking of water heaters, changing their temperature is another simple way to lower utility costs during the winter. According to Energy.gov, homeowners can save between $12 and $30 for each 10° F reduction in water heater temperature. Many manufacturers set water heaters at 140° F, but setting the heater to 120° F can lead to considerable cost savings without sacrificing comfort. An added and cost-effective benefit to lowering water heater temperature is that a lower temperature slows mineral buildup and corrosion in water heaters and pipes, reducing the likelihood of costly repairs while extending the life of the water heater. Winter temperatures can be harsh on homeowners and their wallets. But there are many ways for homeowners to reduce their energy bills no matter how cold it may get this winter.

For Fred Phillips, the longtime owner of Fred’s Auto Body, there is simply no substitute for hard work, integrity, honesty and good old-fashioned customer service. After thirty-seven years in the business, Fred’s character and ethics have come to define him almost more than the high quality of workmanship that he is also known for. In this competitive business, what has given him “staying power” is the commitment he has to excellence and to putting the goodwill of his customers over his own self-interests. Fred Phillips has been an auto technician his whole adult life. He opened his first auto body shop in Coventry in 1983 and moved to his current location in West Warwick, six years later in 1989. At the time, his shop was a nondescript white building. This sufficed until a slump in business triggered an idea. Fred decided to stand out on busy Washington Street by painting his building a mellow shade of yellow, hoping it might attract some attention. As the months and years went by, people began to take notice of Fred’s Auto Body shop. That “mellow yellow” eventually turned bolder and bolder to the bright, lemonyellow that it is today! Now there is no missing this bustling repair shop in the town – and once you meet Fred, you know that it is a lot more than a yellow building that has kept customers coming here generation after generation.

This is why he takes your trust and your business so seriously. For Fred, it is ~ and always has been ~ about satisfying his customers. Working alongside Fred is expert auto body technician Jason whose steadfastness and talent have been a mainstay of Fred’s Auto Body for twenty-one years. The Grammy was for Best Pop Performance, and it also got a nomination for Record of the Year. 2. Glasgow Celtic and Manchester United. 3. Gladys Knight and the Pips, in 1971. The show ran for 23 years, always on Sunday night. 4. “Instant Karma! (We All Shine On),” in 1970. In the U.K. the credit was changed to “Lennon/Ono with the Plastic Ono Band.” It was the first time a solo Beatles song sold a million copies. 5. “The Boxer,” by Simon and Garfunkel, in 1969. It was recorded in multiple parts in multiple locations (including a chapel) and took over 100 hours to complete. Explore The Safest Vehicles On The Road Today Buyers consider various factors before purchasing new vehicles. Safety is one such factor that’s foremost on the minds of many buyers. Many vehicles consistently earn top marks in crash-test performance, collision avoidance systems and rollover protection — among other safety factors. That means safety-conscious buyers have many options at their disposal when the time comes to buy a new vehicle. Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit financed by the insurance industry, ranks the best vehicles for safety performance. “Initial Picks” include new model year vehicles with strong safety features. However, brands have the potential to qualify for the IIHS honors as the year progresses if they offer proof of upgrades or additional safety tests. Automakers are continuously making changes and addressing criteria to improve the safety of their vehicles and earn a spot on the IIHS list. In 2019, the IIHS tightened its qualifications, increasing crash-test standards from 2018. Many brands had impressive rankings. The following are 28 that qualified for 2019 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the highest honor the organization bestows.
Replacing air filters is an inexpensive way to keep vehicles performing at peak capacity.
Vehicle owners likely know to check fluid levels and get their cars’ oil changed, but air filters may not be at the top of their maintenance checklists. Despite being a relatively inexpensive part, air filters often go overlooked. Air filters have an important job in a vehicle, prolonging the life span of engines and helping cars run more smoothly and efficiently. Purpose of vehicle air filters Vehicle combustion engines operate with a mixture of fuel and air. Without oxygen, gasoline or diesel fuels cannot burn properly and power the engine. The air filter’s job is to prevent dirt, dust and other debris from being sucked into an engine. Otherwise, grime can build up and impede engine performance or cause erosion of parts under the hood. It is much more cost-effective to routinely change air filters than replace expensive engine parts. Rather than ignoring air filters until the last minute, drivers can take steps to keep filters clean and functioning at peak performance. • Improve fuel efficiency. Clogged air filters reduce air flow to engines, resulting in an improper ratio of air to fuel. As a result, spark plugs can be negatively affected and the engine may idle roughly or misfire. These scenarios can greatly affect fuel efficiency as well as cause engine deposits from rich fuel. To save money and trips to the fuel pump, replace filters regularly. According to GearHeads, for older cars, studies have indicated that by replacing a dirty air filter, one can improve gas mileage by as much as 14 percent. • Reduce stress on the engine. Because of the air-to-fuel mix in engines, even a mixture that is slightly off balance can affect what is going on under the hood. That means the engine must work harder to get enough clean air into the chamber to complete the combustion cycle, says the Automotive Training Center. • Enjoy more power. A filter that is saturated with dirt will restrict air flow. In such instances, drivers may notice a lack of power during acceleration. Replacing the filter can easily restore that pep. • Reduce vehicle emissions. Environmental concerns are a priority for many people. By keeping the engine working properly, with the advantage of clean, unobstructed air entering the chamber, a vehicle may produce lower emissions. Replacing air filters is an easy fix that many drivers can do themselves, or ask their mechanics to do during oil changes or other repair shop visits.

Winter weather can be harsh. Homeowners who spend much of the year tending to their lawns and gardens may worry that winter will undo all of their hard work. Though homeowners cannot do anything to prevent snow, wind and ice from affecting their properties, they can take various steps to prepare their lawns and gardens for whatever winter has in store. • Mulch leaves. Falling leaves are a telltale sign that winter is coming. In lieu of raking leaves as they begin to fall, homeowners can mulch them into their lawns. Scotts®, an industry leader in lawn care, notes that mulching leaves is a great way for homeowners to recycle a natural resource and enrich the soil of their lawns. While it might not be possible to mulch fallen leaves in late autumn when they begin to fall en masse, doing so in the early stages of fall should be possible so long as the lawn is not being suffocated. Scotts® recommends mulching the leaves to dime-size pieces to a point where half an inch of grass can be seen through the mulched leaf layer. • Rake leaves as they start to fall more heavily. Once leaves begin to fall more heavily, rake them up and add them to compost piles. The resource GardeningKnowHow.com notes composting leaves creates a dark, rich and organic matter that can add nutrients to garden soil and loosen compacted earth. Leaving leaves on the lawn once they start to fall in great numbers makes it hard for grass blades to breathe, and the leaves can block moisture from reaching the soil, which needs water to maintain strong roots. In addition, potentially harmful pathogens can breed on damp leaves left on a lawn, and such bacteria can cause significant damage to the turf over time. • Apply a winterizing fertilizer. Winterizing fertilizers can help lawns store food they need to survive through winter and also can help them bounce back strong in spring. Such fertilizers are typically formulated for cool-season grasses such as fescue and bluegrass and are often best applied after the final cut of fall. Warm-season grasses go dormant in winter, so homeowners whose lawns contain these types of grasses won’t want to apply a winterizing fertilizer. Homeowners who don’t know which type of grass they have or are concerned about when to apply a winterizing fertilizer should consult with a lawncare professional before fertilizing. • Remove annuals from the garden. Annuals won’t be coming back in spring, so it’s best to remove ones that are no longer producing from the garden before the arrival of winter. Doing so can prevent the onset of fungal diseases that may adversely affect the garden in spring. Fall is the perfect time for homeowners who spend months making their lawns and gardens as lush as possible to take steps to prepare such areas for potentially harsh winter weather. ■

Home improvement projects provide homeowners with a chance to put their own stamp on their homes. In addition, many such projects make homes safer and, in some instances, more ecofriendly. The opportunity to make a home more comfortable, safer and/or more eco-friendly entices many homeowners to open their wallets. In fact, the Home Improvement Research Institute estimates that the home improvement products market will grow by more than 5 percent in 2018. Homeowners might experience some sticker shock when researching home improvement projects or receiving estimates from contractors. But there are ways for budget-conscious homeowners to transform their homes and still make the most of their home improvement dollars. • Do your homework. Each year, Remodeling magazine publishes its “Cost vs. Value Report,” a comprehensive study of 21 popular remodeling projects in 149 United States markets. The report notes the value each project retains at resale in 100 markets across the country. Homeowners who want to get the strongest return on investment can access the “Cost vs. Value Report” (www. remodeling.how.net) to see which home improvement projects are best suited for them. • Do some of the labor yourself. Homeowners willing to swing a hammer also can stretch their home improvement dollars. For example, the home improvement resource This Old House® notes that homeowners willing to do their own demolition before the contractors arrive can save substantial amounts of money. A professional contractor may charge $1,000 to demo a 200-squarefoot deck, but This Old House estimates that homeowners who demo their own decks may spend only $450 (for the dumpster rental and parking permit). • Hire a consultant. The DIY movement is incredibly popular, no doubt thanks to television channels such as HGTV and the DIY Network. Homeowners with DIY experience may be able to complete projects on their own with little consultation from professional contractors. Some contractors may not offer consulting services, however. The consultation route, which typically requires paying licensed contractors hourly fees to offer guidance, should only be considered by homeowners with legitimate DIY skills, for whom this option can be a great way to save money. • Schedule renovations during homeowner-friendly times of year. Summer and fall tend to be contractors’ busy seasons, and homeowners will likely pay more for projects during this time of year. If possible, delay starting projects until right after the new year, when contractors aren’t so busy and might be more flexible with pricing. Budget-conscious homeowners can employ various strategies to make the most of their home improvement dollars without sacrificing quality.

No Need To Fear Root Canals
Procrastinating in regard to maintaining teeth and gums can prove harmful. Regular dental checkups and cleanings can reduce discomfort and expose conditions before they become especially problematic. Root canal is one treatment men and women fear when going to the dentist. But root canals are often less painful than the symptoms that require they be performed. A root canal is an endodontic therapy that can treat and save teeth. The American Association of Endodontists says root canal treats inflammation or infection in the roots of a tooth. This procedure enables dentists to save a tooth rather than extract it. WebMD explains that, during a root canal, the nerve and pulp of the tooth are removed from the inside. If the tooth’s nerve or pulp chamber is damaged, it can eventually break down and bacteria can begin to form within. The most common causes of pulp inflammation or infection are a cracked or chipped tooth, a deep cavity or filling, or another serious injury to the tooth. All of these can allow bacteria to enter the pulp. Debris and bacteria can lead to infection or an abscessed tooth. Abscesses
can form at the ends of the tooth roots. Swelling, pain, bone loss, and drainage into the gums may occur if a root canal is not performed. The AAE says that people may avoid root canal treatment because they fear it is too painful. However, with modern technology and anesthetic medications, the pain that results from root canal is on par with having a cavity filled. Damaged tissues in the tooth and the severe toothache that ensues if root canal is not performed is generally much more severe than anything that occurs during the procedure. Patients who are worried about discomfort can speak with their dentists about pain management. In addition to anesthetic injections, some dentists specialize in medical sedation that can further calm patients’ nerves during procedures. The American Dental Association says this is what people can expect during a root canal. • The tooth is numbed for comfort. • A thin sheet of latex rubber is placed over the tooth to keep it dry, and an opening is made through the crown of the tooth. • The nerve or pulp is removed. The excavated canal is then cleaned and shaped. • Medicine may be placed in the pulp chamber to deter bacterial growth. • The root canal is then filled with a rubber-like material to seal it. A metal or plastic rod or post may be placed in the canal to help retain the filling material so it can properly support the tooth. • A temporary filling is placed in the tooth. During a subsequent treatment, the temporary filling will be replaced with a permanent crown or filling. Root canals are nothing to fear. Such procedures are routine and generally produce little to no pain.

Real Estate 5 Factors To Consider When Buying A Home
Apartment for Rent
Apartment for Rent
Crowe Properties 45 Reservoir Rd., Coventry, RI 02816 (401)265-3489 www.CrowePropertiesRI.com
Home ownership is a dream for many people. In fact, buying a home is considered by many people to be a major life accomplishment. Various factors determine what makes a home an attractive place to live. While some considerations may overlap, others may be unique to individual buyers. Those new to the real estate arena may want to consider the following factors as they search for a new place to call home.
COVENTRY: 71 Station Street $970 per month First Floor: Newly renovated, 2 bedrooms, washer and dryer, refrigerator, stove, private entrance, off-street parking. Near Coventry Greenway.
2: Job security/availability The financial resource Fortune Builder says to consider your job security before taking the home ownership plunge. Before committing to an investment as substantial as a home, ensure that you are secure in your job. Similarly, if you are relocating for job prospects, verify that the new location has a thriving job market. 3: Local schools For potential homeowners with children or those planning on becoming parents, area schools should merit significant consideration. Research school rankings and reviews, but know that rankings can change. American Family Insurance Company says to also look at the school budget history of towns you’re considering to see if residents prioritize funding for education. This can be a measure of how important education is in a given community. 4: Commute times Home ownership involves both lifestyle and financial decisions. Calculate the time it will take to travel to and from work when considering a certain town or neighborhood. Find out if there is mass transit and what options are available for off-hour travel needs. 5: Lifestyle options Quality nightlife, arts and history, community events, proximity to cultural centers or cities, and other factors are at play in choosing a home. Make sure your new community allows you to still enjoy the things you’re passionate about. Buying a home involves considering various factors that can affect your budget and quality of life.

1: Property taxes Property taxes can greatly affect the overall cost of living in a particular home. The real estate company RedFin says property taxes are generally levied by each county and often include taxes paid to schools, utility companies and municipal governments. Property taxes will usually be factored into a monthly mortgage payment, and how high (or low) taxes are can turn an affordable mortgage payment into something that can break a budget. When calculating payments, be sure to include property taxes in your estimates.

Did You Know?
A real estate attorney is an important professional to have in one’s corner when buying or selling a home. The legal resource Find Law says that buying and selling a home can be one of the most significant purchases made in a person’s lifes. Real estate law can be complicated, and all parties involved need to ensure they are protected as they complete transactions and negotiations. That is why it is essential to have a real estate attorney in one’s corner. A lawyer trained in real estate law will review contracts and other documents like title transfers and deeds. The attorney also handles the closing. Throughout the process, attorneys will provide legal guidance and explain terminology related to the transaction. In case of a dispute, the attorney will also provide legal representation in the courtroom, if needed, or negotiate a resolution on a client’s behalf. Even though a real estate attorney is another expense in the process of purchasing real estate, it is a worthwhile investment for the protection and peace of mind attorneys provide.

The Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus: In the past, I have asked many favors. This time, I ask you this very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted no matter how impossible. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy.

Crafty Experiences For Holiday Gifts One of the challenges each holiday season is coming up with novel gifts for loved ones. For those who seemingly have it all and might not need another Santa sweater or fruit basket, an experience gift might be the perfect fit. Giving experiences can be fulfilling for gifters and show recipients that the gift was given ample thought. There are no shortages of experiences to offer. However, people who enjoy arts and crafts may enjoy being on the receiving end of a crafty experience this year. • Glass-blowing: Glass-blowing is an art form that turns molten glass into colorful and eye-catching pieces. Blown glass can be transformed into everything from wine goblets to ornaments. Instructors can teach gift recipients how to form glass into desired finished products and decorate them with swirls, patterns and colors. Check with local glass-blowing artisans (many are located in tourist centers and seaside towns) to find out if they offer experience gifts. • Paint and sip: Paint and sip businesses are thriving, as scores of novice artists produce impressive artwork while sipping a glass of vino. A friend or a family member who aspires to be the next Bob Ross will likely enjoy a paint and sip gift. • Farmhouse style crafts: Businesses that teach individuals how to create farmhouse crafts take them through the stepby-step process of turning raw wood boards and shelves into stained and stenciled farmhouse-inspired pieces. With clever sayings like “Home is where our story begins” or “Smith Family, Est. 2019,” it’s never been easier to create custom pieces in just a few hours. • Pottery: Pottery studios can now be found as stand-alone buildings or as franchised establishments in area shopping malls. Recipients can choose among various projects and walk away with a painted and fired treasure that can be displayed for years.
• Brewing: With the rise of craft breweries, apprentice shops have turned up across the country. A craft beer experience gift may be just what a budding brewer needs to start creating his or her own beers. Craft-inspired experience gifts can be customized for people with a wide range of interests.
