October Brings Pumpkin
Bisque With a Twist
Oh, October! It’s officially pumpkin-flavored everything month! If you want to see the face of bliss, offer your loved ones this easy-to-pre pare scrumptious Pumpkin Apple Cider Soup lovingly paired with adorable grilled cheese croutons. Although incredibly nutritious, pumpkin on its own is a little bland. We’re infusing complexity into it by adding onion, garlic, lots of seasonal spices, apple and apple cider. The cider and the apple bring the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity to this soup. However, this is a savory soup; don’t expect a pool of pumpkin pie!
If your budget allows, this is the time to splurge on some good unfil tered cider. You only need one cup for the soup; the rest you get to sip when evenings get chilly.
You can choose to make this soup as chunky or as smooth as you like. The outcome depends on how small you chop the ingredients and if you decide to puree the finished soup. I chose the middle ground with finely diced onion and apple and was very pleased with the results. My family loved the little bursts of apple spiking the rich and savory soup.
PUMPKIN APPLE CIDER SOUP
Total Time: 40 minutes
Yield: 8 cups 1 tablespoon each of olive oil and
butter
1 cup onion, diced
1 cup apple (any variety), peeled, cored, and diced
1 teaspoon garlic, minced
1 (large 29-ounce) can pure pumpkin
4 cups (32-ounce box) chicken or vegetable broth
1 cup apple cider
1 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon each of cinnamon and ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Optional for bisque: half and half or heavy cream
Garnish: sour cream, pepitas, roasted pumpkin seeds
seasoning to taste.
At this point, for a creamier, totally smooth soup, you can use an immer sion blender or transfer soup to a blender to puree until it reaches your desired consistency. You also can choose to add half and half or heavy cream to make pumpkin bisque. I’d start at half a cup and add from there.
To serve, ladle into bowls and serve with grilled cheese croutons — instructions below. For extra Diva flair, you can garnish with little dol lops of sour cream (it doesn’t dissolve into the soup like heavy cream would) and a sprinkle of bright green pepitas (shelled pumpkin seeds) and/or roast ed whole pumpkin seeds.
GRILLED CHEESE
CROUTONS
Total Time: 10 minutes
Yield: 12 croutons
1 baguette (day old is perfect!) 1 (8 ounce) block sharp cheddar cheese, room temperature 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
Preheat a skillet on medium-high heat. Slice a baguette into 24 (1/4 inch) slices. Slice cheese into 12 slices. Place a slice of room temperature sharp cheddar cheese between two slices of bread and butter the outsides, like little sand wiches. Grill the croutons in the skillet until golden brown.
In a heavy bottomed soup pot or large saucepan over medium heat, bring the oil and butter up to a sizzle and saute the onion for about 3 min utes. Next, add the apple and continue to saute until both are quite soft. Add the garlic and stir to combine and take a moment to appreciate that amazing aroma. Don’t you love a great savory and sweet combo? Now, let’s make soup! Add the pumpkin, chicken or veggie broth, apple cider and stir. Now add the spices, thyme, cinna mon, ginger, salt and pepper. Stir to combine and let this simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat. Adjust
Make extra, because these are sim ply addictive! I kid you not. This is a dish destined to become a fall family favorite.

Cardiac Stent, While Helpful, Can Bring Risks
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 71-year-old woman diagnosed with coronary artery disease. My latest calcium score was 801. My right cor onary artery was 80% blocked, and the left artery was 25%. My cardiol ogist asked me to decide if I want to do angioplasty or not. I don’t have any symptoms, only shortness of breath on exertion. I can’t decide what to do. My cardiologist seemed against get ting a stent, not that he said that exact ly, but he stressed the risk of getting one. — M.C.
ANSWER: A cardiac stent is a device placed into an artery of the heart after it is re-opened, usually by a balloon in a procedure called an angio plasty. Stents help reduce the risk of the artery closing off after the proce dure. In people with stable coronary artery disease, opening up a blood ves sel can reduce symptoms, but has not been shown, despite many studies, to reduce risk of heart attack or death.
You said you were asymptomatic, but shortness of breath is one of the major symptoms of blocked coronary arter ies, which are the blood vessels that provide oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. It can be very difficult at times to judge whether a person’s shortness of breath is coming from blockages in the artery or not, and stress testing can help answer whether this is likely. People can have shortness of breath on exertion for many reasons, including lung problems, anemia, lack of exer cise or persistent symptoms after a COVID infection.
While the decision is ultimately up to you — it’s your body — it’s best if
to
the cardiologist gives you a definite recommendation and the reasoning behind it. You can’t make an informed decision without being informed. A stent might improve your shortness of breath, but there are risks of bleeding, infection and even heart damage from a stent placement. It’s not to be under taken lightly.
If your cardiologist doesn’t feel that your shortness of breath stems from the blockages, then a stent is not likely to be helpful. Revisit with your cardiologist to get a clear idea of the potential benefit and harm specific for your case, and bring a friend or family member to assist you.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I take Ant abuse to help me quit drinking. Do I need to worry about the alcohol in hand sanitizers? — L.W.
ANSWER: Antabuse is a medication that makes people feel very sick even if they drink small amounts of alcohol. It is not frequently used anymore, but it is still an effective and time-tested option for medication treatment in people with problem drinking.
Hand sanitizers are made from either ethyl alcohol, which is the alcohol in alcoholic beverages, or from isopropyl or rubbing alcohol. There have been case reports of people developing a reac tion to the alcohol from practicing hand hygiene, from aftershave, and even from inhaling fumes after practicing hand hygiene. According to a study during the pandemic, of 42 people on Antabuse who routinely used hand sanitizers, 20% had a reaction to the ethyl-alcohol-based sanitizer, and 10% had a reaction to the isopropyl-based sanitizer. Seven percent of people had severe reactions, but the rest were mild and self-limited.
There clearly is a risk for develop ing symptoms after even the smallest amount of alcohol that can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled through fumes. People on Antabuse with a reac tion to skin sanitizers should wash their hands rather than use sanitizers.

Come as you are to this Independent Catholic Church
The
of
If you are ever fortunate enough to pass through the doors of the Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux, there are a few things you should expect:
One, you should expect to feel completely at home ~ man, woman, child. You are home when you are here.
Two, you should expect to see others just like you ~ gay, straight, or any other way you identify. No one is excluded here.
Three, you should expect to see a volunteer clergy who receive no compensation for their dedication, service, and commitment to their congregation.
Four, you should expect to see women serving alongside their male counterparts as ordained Deacons, Ministers and even married Priests.
Five, you should expect to see divorcees partaking in all the rituals and blessings that their married and single friends enjoy.
Six, you should expect a welcoming hand, an outstretched arm, an embrace, and an invitation to return.
The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux is an independent Catholic Community that functions outside the jurisdiction of Rome. As Father Charles Vohs, the congregation’s Priest explains, this is a faith community whose mission it is to reclaim those whose experiences have left them feeling marginalized by the traditional Catholic Church. The church is a haven for those whose abiding faith in the teachings of Jesus Christ have not always been in alignment with their lifestyles, leaving them feeling estranged, con icted,
and often unwanted. Father Chuck would say to those who feel left on the fringes of their faith ~ come, you are a Child of God and you are welcome here. Come to be replenished, edi ed, supported, and uplifted.
A quick peruse of the chapel’s website best sums up the church’s mission: “The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux welcomes all individuals seeking God’s love; we keep our doors open to every soul seeking to welcome Jesus into their hearts. We invite you to open your heart and allow His grace to penetrate your soul.
Our church stands as a beacon of hope in West Warwick. We are a place of acceptance, peace, and joy to all who are moved to join us. Our church family is richly diverse, with people of di erent ages and backgrounds coming together to worship and serve
together.”
Recently, the chapel underwent some major renovations including a new roof and paint job. Like so many of us, it needed a long overdue “makeover.” Constructed in 1902, the building, which was a former Methodist Church, was purchased in 2014. Today, it is a magni cent and historic structure with tall arching beams, exquisite stained-glass windows, gracious statues, and familiar emblems of the faith and worship.
Please come to “Saint T’s”, located at 1500 Main Street in West Warwick. Services are every Sunday at 10:30, either in person or via Zoom. Feel free to call 401-6809076 or email stocc1500@gmail.com for more information. The website is also a great resource, visit them at www.go1500.org

Dog Balks at Eyedrops
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog is being prepared for corrective eye surgery, and has to be given special drops. However, Maisie won’t hold still for me at all, and I can’t get the drops in. What can I do? — Lauren, via email
DEAR LAUREN: Pets don’t like being given medicine, and they real ly, really don’t like getting eyedrops. Approaching Maisie head-on or hold ing the eye dropper directly over her eye will freak her out. Instead, keep her comfortable and unaware of the dropper until the very last moment. Here’s how:
Prayer to St. Jude
Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen. Special thanks and gratitude in your honor for my favor.

Checklist for Retirement PART 2
Jeffrey H. Massey Certified Financial Planner™ Massey and Associates, Inc.Hopefully, you read the Checklist for Retirement – Part I, which was my last article. This is a continuation of the Checklist for Retirement. If you missed the first part, simply contact our office, and we can email you a copy of the article.
The next topic in the checklist is very important and can be very confusing.
Strategies to maximize your Social Security Benefits; it’s important to know what your monthly Social Security retirement benefit amounts will be for you (and your spouse if applicable) at various ages.
We recommend setting up an account on the Social Security website, www.SSA.gov. It may take a little time to work through the challenge questions like knowing what bank financed your first automobile, etc., but once you get onto the site, it’s worth it! Also, knowing that the Social Security Administration is trying to protect your identity by asking these questions should provide you with some comfort knowing that they are trying to protect your identity.
You should obtain your Social Security retirement benefit estimates for age 62, your Full Retirement Age (FRA), and Age 70. The FRA of 66 is for those born in 1954 or before. The system adds 2 months for each year of birth starting in 1955 up to 1960. For those born in 1960 or after, your full retirement age is 67.
These Social Security benefit amounts are estimates based on your earnings record over your work history that includes the highest 35 years of earnings projected out to the various retirement ages. If you do not have 35 years of earnings, you will have some zeros in your calculation which will reduce your benefit amounts.
Social Security inflation adjusts your older annual amounts to today’s value then takes the highest 35 years of earnings to calculate your monthly benefit amount. Your last year of reported earnings is assumed to be continued until your retirement ages; 62, 66-67, or age 70, which may or may not be the case. It is important for you to know what your anticipated Social Security retirement monthly benefits will be as that is likely your foundation of
no longer have a pension from their
private industry employer. (https:// www.ssa.gov/, n.d.)
Once you know your Social Security monthly benefit amount, you can determine how much more you may need in your savings, investment, or retirement accounts to retire and cover your monthly living expenses.
In addition to your Social Security, you should total all expected income from all sources including monthly pension benefits if available, annuity payments or investment income expected from your portfolio. Determining a reasonable rate of drawdown is important for long-term sustainability of your investments. If you withdraw too much early in your retirement, you may run out of money before you pass away.
One major issue we often see when evaluating a prospective client’s port-
folio is excessive risk.
We often discuss the importance of reducing risk in your investments as you get closer to retirement. It is important to understand the level of risk that is in your investment portfolio and understand how that level of risk may affect the value of your retirement portfolio given increasing and decreasing market conditions. Identifying the level of risk in a portfolio is a key part of any good retirement plan. There are various software programs that we use to determine the extent of risk within your current portfolio.
As you get closer to your retirement date, it’s important to understand that if the stock market goes way down, you may not recover in time to meet your original retirement date. It’s more
important to hold onto what you have and get a “reasonable” return versus being too aggressive in the years just prior to retirement and risk losing too much.
If you would like to access a risk assessment tool, you can go to our website and click on the “What’s your risk number?” box. That will take you to the software, where, in less than 5 minutes working through the questions, you will get a risk score.
That is a good starting point. The next step is to have your portfolio evaluated to determine the risk level of your portfolio. Then compare your score with the score of your portfolio to see how close they are. The closer the scores the better it is. If those two numbers are too far apart, then a portfolio adjustment would be prudent. Lastly, the software will identify if you are too risky relative to your proximity to retirement. If that is the case, again, an adjustment of risk would be prudent.

As inflation continues to put a strain on budgets, talk of an upcoming recession has Americans worried about their finances. Prices on ev eryday items continue to rise and consumers are trying to find ways to make their dol lar stretch further while safe guarding their money against the potential challenges a re cession may bring. The future may be difficult to predict, but preparing now can help con sumers protect their financial health during a recession.
A recent Experian survey found that two in three U.S. adults are concerned about a recession occurring in the United States. Consumers are most worried about the afford ability of routine expenses, with 73% concerned that the price of everyday items like gas, groceries and rent will continue to rise to a level they can’t afford. Meanwhile, 55% harbor supply chain concerns and 38% are stressed about the affordability of big, planned purchases such as a home or a car.
As recession worries grow, more Americans are sizing up their finances to see where they stand. Only 48% are confident that they can financially han dle a recession, and two in five believe that they’ll need to rely on credit to cover essential and unexpected expenses over the next three months. In fact, 27% have already increased their credit card debt within the past three months. This trend is accompanied by additional anxieties: two in three survey respondents are concerned to some degree that their credit score will negatively affect their ability to access credit in
the next three months.
Being proactive is key to weathering financial storms, yet less than half of consumers have prepared for a recession when it comes to their finances and credit. Those who have are finding different ways to do so: 49% have cut non-essential expenses like entertainment and vacations, 45% have cre ated a budget and 40% have paid down debt.
While these are effective ac tions, there are other steps consumers can take to under
stand their credit history and safeguard their credit.
Consumers should check their credit report and credit score regularly to know ex actly where they stand in the event that they need to apply for credit, or simply to be bet ter informed as they prepare to pay down their debt ahead of an economic decline. They can get a free credit report and credit score from Experi an (Spanish-language credit reports are also available) as well as access to free financial
tools, an auto insurance shop ping service and credit card marketplace.
Those who need help in creasing their credit score can sign up for Experian Boost. This free feature enables con sumers to add their monthly payments for cell phone bills, utility bills, rent and video streaming services to their credit history to potentially increase their FICO Score in stantly. To learn more, visit ex perian.com/boost.
“Inflation and recession
fears are putting pressure on consumer’s finances, but pro actively planning for the worst can help consumers make it through potential challenges. Many consumers are already taking great steps to prepare, like creating a budget and paying down their debt, and we encourage them to utilize other available resources and tools to help,” says Rod Grif fin, senior director of Public Education and Advocacy at Experian.

Q:Have they decided yet who will be performing in the Super Bowl halftime show next year? I hope it’s a classic rock band like The Rolling Stones. Have they ever played it before? — N.N.
A:The Rolling Stones were the featured halftime performers for Super Bowl XL, which took place on Feb. 5, 2006, at the home stadium of the Detroit Lions. They performed several of their classic songs, including “Start Me Up” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfac tion.” Prince, Tom Petty and the Heart breakers, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band finished out the decade.
The 2010s started off with The Who, followed by pop stars like Madonna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce, among other big names. Last year’s show was a return to retro, with ’80s rap stars like Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre delighting fans at the halftime show.
Rumor had it that Taylor Swift would be the next pop star to grace the stage, but within a day, it was officially announced that Rihanna would be next year’s Super Bowl headliner instead. Rihanna is no slouch, as she’s sold more than 60 mil lion albums and topped the charts with 14 singles throughout her career. Her fans have been clamoring for a new album from her and a worldwide tour, but in the meantime, this will have to suffice. Super Bowl LVII will take place on Feb. 12, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona.
Q:Will there be another season, or more, of the Netflix show “Dead to Me”? I love that show, but just realized it’s been a long time since the last season finale. I hope it didn’t get canceled. — D.T.
A:Yes, it’s been a long time — two years, in fact — since any new episodes of “Dead to Me” were available for streaming, but fortunately, there will be a third season. According to Dead line.com, the reason for the long hiatus was twofold: In addition to the pandem ic halting production, it was also delayed after Christina Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Q:I was surprised to see Steve Carell in another show, and it’s not a comedy. What happened to “Space Force”? — T.M.
A:“Space Force” had all the ele ments for another hit by produc er Greg Daniels. He was teaming up once again with Steve Carell, the former star of his cult hit comedy series “The Office,” and he had a super talented sup porting cast that included Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”) and Ben Schwartz (“Parks and Recreation”). Alas, it just didn’t click with viewers, and the series was canceled by Netflix after just two seasons.
Carell has already moved on with a new series, a suspenseful drama on Hulu, in which he plays a therapist held captive by a serial killer. “The Patient” also stars Domhnall Gleeson (“Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker”) as the titular character. Carell is as adept at drama as he is at comedy. In 2015, he was nom inated for an Academy Award for his performance in “Foxcatcher,” which was the polar opposite of his character on “The Office,” Michael Scott. He has quite the range.

• A Tip From JoAnn: I like bottled water, but it’s expensive and creates a lot of waste. I have plenty of reus able bottles, but bottled water always seemed more convenient and, frankly, better. I found that what I really like is to take a bottle of very cold water out of the fridge and drink it, so instead of storing those reusable bottles in the cabinet, I fill them straight from the dishwasher and put them in the fridge. Now I have the convenience of bottled water without spending the money, and I happily am not creating waste.

• Got a grease stain on your shirt? Cover it with baking soda right away. The baking soda will absorb oil. Repeat several times and launder as quickly as you can.

“Over the
by Bill Marcotte, ProprietorOctober 1946. My dad opened a dry-cleaning store on Main Street, in the village of Washington, here in Coventry. With the help of my mother Dorothy, and my siblings, Gail and Robert, Crystal Cleansers was born. That was 76 years ago this month. Through all those years Crystal served the dry-cleaning needs of a lot of people. Lots of changes happened. Families grew and so did business. In 1965 we moved to our present location. Mom and dad retired, and brother Tom took over for a number of years. The business continued and I became the owner in 1991.
Here we are all these years later, and now its time for me to turn the reigns over to someone else. It’s time for me to enjoy my life and move on. It’s been such a great job. I don’t like the word retire, so we call it restructuring. Changing pace. Shaking up the norm. The most rewarding part was meeting so many great people. Customers grew up and their children became customers and then their children. I’m blessed beyond belief with so many memories of so many wonderful people. Not just customers, but friends. I have stories to fill a book and memories to last a lifetime.
Crystal Cleansers will continue in its present home, with new owners and new faces behind the counter. We welcome the family at East Winds Dry Cleaners in East Greenwich as the new owners and wish them good fortune and much happiness here at Crystal.
I thank my many employees for all their years of service and friendship. We will always be family. Special thanks and much love especially to Sharon and Wayne and our beloved Loxi, who spent 60 years behind the counter on Saturdays and worked right up until our last day.
Thank you to all our friends. Please know that we love you all and will surely miss you. My dad would be happy to know his little shop on Main Street still lives on with a new family taking over. It’s tough not to shed a tear from time to time, and it is bittersweet, but it’s been a good run.
