Bee-Friendly Living Life is always abuzz in the Holmlund household. Working parents and three active kids under 11 come and go from their welcoming Santa Cruz home near Monterey Bay, California. You could almost say that with all their work, school and youth activities, they're as busy as the honeybees living on their rooftop deck.

Jude Holmlund, 9, tends rooftop beehives with beekeeper and friend James Young. The kids recently invited me to climb the narrow stairs leading to that third-level breezy space where they often hang out to relax and eat supper. I soon discovered that they share it with over 50,000 hardworking honeybees who live in two basic kid-painted beehives tucked in the corner. Despite the numbers, it's not crowded, and there is no need to shoo the bees away. They
come and go, doing their pollinating thing, while the Holmlunds peacefully co-exist with buzzing friends. "Who knew the bees would become our new family pets," says 42-year-old mom Alison. When they packed for a fall trek to Lake Tahoe, 6-year-old Eva asked if she could take some of the bees with them. "I had to tell her that they have to stay home with the queen bee," said Alison. Like any pet, they require care, so the kids pitched in to help by making sure the jars of sugar water were refilled while the bees were getting established in their new home. And when family friend and beekeeper James Young, who inspired and set up the project, comes by, he recruits a kid or two to don veiled bee gear and calm the bees by applying smoke to their hives while James checks in on the health of their hives and the honey production. "It has been a great experience," says Alison. "Little bits of learning become part of our everyday, like being quiet and calm around the hives. We've also learned how every bee plays a role in their extraordinary community life." As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people. Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out. Very often a smarter layout and more efficient floor plan can make meaningful differences in spaces. Renovations and redesigns can make sense and often are less expensive and disruptive than moving. The Town of Coventry has just completed a statistical revaluation, conducted by Northeast Revaluation Group LLC , that has increased the Actual Net Assessment of Residential Real Estate from $2,197,124,450 to approximately $2,620,725,802. The Actual Net Assessment of the Commercial Real Estate has increased from $429,804,978 to approximately $505,135,820. The increase in the total assessment will allow for the reduction in the Property Tax rate. During a revaluation year, the starting levy of the upcoming fiscal year
must equal the levy of the previous fiscal year. The revaluation process cannot be used to increase the starting levy of the upcoming fiscal year. The current FY20 Coventry tax rates are as follows: Residential $22.24, Commercial $26.81, Tangible $22.24, and Motor Vehicle $18.75. The equalized rate with the new valuations for FY21 would be approximately: Residential $18.97, Commercial $22.87, Tangible $18.97 and Motor Vehicle $18.75. The proposed budget will result in a tax rate of approximately: Residential $19.80, Commercial $23.87, Tangible $19.80 and Motor Vehicle $18.75. The rates listed may fluctuate slightly when the tax role is final, locked and certified. In a revaluation year, even with a 0.0% tax/levy freeze, Individual tax bills will vary either up or down from the previous year’s tax bill. Individual properties will increase or decrease in value based on a number of factors. The total amount
