This got me thinking about a game that film buffs used to play — Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Bacon once claimed that he’d worked with everyone in Hollywood, or if not with them, then with someone who did. Out of that one statement, a phenomenon was born, one that occupied thousands of hours of film nerd discussion and spawned a board game, a book and even a charitable organization (sixdegrees.org).

Looking upward on a morning run, I was caught off guard when I spotted branches of leaves that were green, turning to yellow and orange. “Whoa,�

I said between breaths, “not yet!�

Knowing full well I can’t change the march of seasons, I decided to intentionally savor remaining summertime pleasures, including berries and tree-ripened peaches, nectarines and plums. My friend Kay Miller’s fabulous summer go-to Fruit and Berry Pie recipe that mingles the sweet flavors came to mind.

Kids can be part of the prep. While your school-age child washes the berries and peels the juicy peaches, a younger sibling can press the simple cookielike crust into a pan. And there’s a lemon or two to juice and zest.

Serve the sun-kissed flavors to rave reviews Labor Day weekend at a family barbecue. The refreshing dessert will taste like summer is here to stay — even if a few leaves are turning to trick us.

FRESH FRUIT AND BERRY PIE For the crust: 1/4 1/4 1 1

cup soft unsalted butter cup sugar egg yolk cup all-purpose flour pinch of salt

For the filling: 1/3 3 1½ 1/4 1 2

cup sugar tablespoons cornstarch cups orange juice (pulp free) cup fresh lemon juice tablespoon grated lemon zest cups firm, ripe peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced cups strawberries, hulled and quartered cup blueberries cup raspberries Whipped cream, for serving

3. To make the filling, combine the sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan.

Slowly add orange juice and mix thoroughly. An adult should turn the stovetop to medium-low heat and stir occasionally until the mixture begins to thicken (about 4-5 minutes) and comes to a boil. Watch carefully. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from burner, add the lemon juice and zest and stir. Let cool.

4. Stir in the fruit and berries, and then spoon the mixture into the pie crust.

5. Chill to set for at least 3 hours before serving. Makes 8 servings.

6. To serve: Run a knife around the edge of the pan. Serve cold, topped with whipped cream.

How to get a handle on work-related stress

Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress.

The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper.

Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities.

That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort.

Getting a handle on stress can be difficult.

Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.

• Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize.

Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress.

Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress.

The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

• Embrace relaxation methods. The APA recommends professionals coping with workplace stress embrace techniques that can effectively alleviate stress. Such techniques include meditation and deep-breathing exercises and can help workers develop their ability to focus purposefully on a single activity. That improved focus may help workers better navigate hectic working environments without succumbing to the stress such environments can produce.

Work-related stress is a significant issue for many professionals. But working in tandem with their employers can help professionals effectively cope with that stress.

When you have grown up in New England, the ocean has a certain “gravitational pull” on your heart, your soul, and your appetite! For Rhode Island native Peter Caswell, that pull has informed nearly every decision he has made. Peter grew up digging quahogs with his father off the plentiful waters of our shores and today, that legacy continues with his own sons. He will always come back to the sea. Today, Peter has also combined his lifelong passion for the “fruits of the sea” with his talent for cooking to create his own shellfish company, aptly called Rhode Island Shellfish Co. Harnessing his connection with the sea, Peter founded Rhode Island Shellfish Co. in 2016. What started as a way to bring Peter’s culinary skills to life and to satisfy his love of cooking has since evolved into this enduring venture. Peter built a commercial kitchen which he affectionately named “Annie’s Kitchen” (after his beloved mother from whom he learned everything he knows about cooking) and then received a USDA “grant of inspection” so he could sell his homemade shellfish dishes wholesale. It is here where he creates gourmet masterpieces with shellfish of all kinds, with a special emphasis on his favorite, locally- sourced quahogs.

It’s August, and that means I’m busily trying to figure out a way to preserve the smells and flavors of my favorite vegetables. I enjoy stocking my freezer with vegetables I’ve grown or bought in large quantities from local farmers. Your freezer is one of the best ways to preserve the color and flavor of summer produce all year long. Here’s some great tips for freezing the best of your favorite summer vegetables and herbs: Can I Freeze Bell and Sweet Peppers Raw? If you’ve picked a peck of peppers and have too many to eat, try freezing them. Peppers are one of those foods that can be quickly frozen raw without first blanching them. Here are some guidelines on freezing bell and sweet peppers raw: Select crisp, tender, green or brightred pods. Wash, cut out stems, cut in half and remove seeds. If desired, cut into 1/2-inch strips or rings. Good for use in uncooked foods because they have a crisper texture, or in cooked foods. Package raw, leaving no headspace. Seal and freeze.

NOTE: To make it easier to remove only the amount of frozen bell or sweet peppers needed at one time, freeze sliced or diced peppers in a single layer on a cookie sheet with sides. Transfer to a “freezer” bag when frozen, excluding as much air as possible from the bag.

Can Tomatoes be Frozen Raw? Like peppers, tomatoes can be frozen raw. Frozen tomatoes are best used in cooked foods such as soups, sauces and stews as they become mushy when they’re thawed.

Select firm, ripe tomatoes with deep red color. Wash and dip in boiling water for 30 seconds to loosen skins.

Core and peel. Freeze whole or in pieces. Pack into containers, leaving l-inch headspace. Seal and freeze.

TIP: Dip just a few tomatoes at a time into the boiling water or the water temperature may be lowered too much to remove the skins without overheating the tomatoes. Place hot tomatoes in a colander and rinse under cold water to make them easier to handle. A knife with a serrated edge works best for cutting tomatoes.

How About Freezing Fresh Herbs?

Wash, drain and pat the herbs dry with paper towels. Wrap a few sprigs or leaves in freezer wrap and place in a freezer bag, then seal and freeze. The frozen herbs can be chopped and used in cooked dishes. After freezing, the herbs usually are not suitable for garnish, as they become limp when thawed.

TIP: To extend the time frozen fruits and vegetables maintain good quality, package foods in material intended for freezing and keep the temperature of the freezer at 0 F or below. It is generally recommended that frozen vegetables and fruits be eaten within eight months for best quality.

GAZPACHO This wonderful recipe for gazpacho is a great way to use a variety of your favorite herbs and summer vegetables.

large cucumber, peeled, seeded and finely diced large green bell pepper, finely chopped 1 medium-sized red onion, minced 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1 medium avocado, peeled and diced, for garnish 1 cup herbed croutons, for garnish 1. To peel the tomatoes, submerge them a few tomatoes at a time in boiling water for 15 seconds. Place in a colander and rinse under cold water. The skins should slip right off. Core the tomatoes and gently squeeze out the seeds.

Chop half of the tomatoes coarsely and puree the other half in a food processor.

Combine the puree and chopped tomatoes in a large mixing bowl.

2. Add the cucumber, bell pepper, onion, vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice and zest, parsley, basil, hot sauce, salt, pepper, sugar and nutmeg to the tomatoes. Mix gently to blend the ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for several hours before serving.

3. Serve chilled. Garnish with the avocado and herbed croutons, if desired. How to effectively and safely sanitize a car

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way people live. One readily felt effect was spending more time at home. Vehicles sat idle in driveways and even some automotive insurance providers reduced rates because people were driving much less.

Even with stay-at-home measures in place, people still need to leave their homes to stock up on essentials, such as food or medicine. In other cases, people may have been essential workers who drive for a living, including delivery drivers or health care personnel who were incapable of working from home.

Any time a person goes out in public, he or she runs the risk of contracting viruses. Bacteria and germs may reside on various surfaces, including those inside vehicles.

People want to protect themselves and now are more aware of the importance of frequently cleaning and sanitizing their cars.

Keeping a vehicle safe to drive without affecting its upholstery or electronic components is paramount.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention makes a distinction between cleaning and disinfecting.

Cleaning refers to the removal of germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces. It does not kill germs, but can lower their numbers. Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces.

The following are some ways to deeply clean and sanitize a car. • Wash hands. First and foremost, it is crucial to wash your hands before and after using the car. This can reduce the likelihood of growing ill because of transferred viruses or bacteria. • Use rubbing alcohol. Solutions that contain 70 percent alcohol are effective against many viruses and bacteria, including coronaviruses, says the CDC. Ceramic Dancers Pairs of ceramic dancing figures in exotic costumes were favorites in the Art Deco period, starting about 1920.

Many different pairs about 19 or 20 inches high have been selling with the mark “Cia Manna” and sometimes the added words “Turin, Italy.” A search of old books and even new information online has offered little insight.

The pairs of dancing figurines depict a bare-breasted woman and a shirtless man posing in exaggerated dance poses. Dozens of different pairs were made, most from 1925 to the 1950s. An artist and designer named Mrs. Manna, who worked for the Lenci doll company, decided to form her own company in 1930. She named it Ceramica Italiana Artistica. The dancing figurines were marked “C.I.A. Manna.” Often the mark omitted the periods, so the first word looked like “Cia.” The company worked into the 1950s. The Art Deco look is still popular, and most of the pairs have sold for $800 to $1,500. *** How can I determine whether there is lead in older china, especially in pieces I intend to use for food? I was told by a friend there is a test kit for lead, and that the kits are available in hardware stores. In the hardware stores I checked, the kits were for checking lead in drinking water, not china. Is there such a kit for testing the safety of older china?

You can order kits online that test for lead, but the most reliable tests are done with professional equipment. It’s not how much lead is in the dish, but how much lead leaches out. In 1971, the Food and Drug Administration set limits on the amount of lead in dishware; the regulations were updated in 1993. New dishes that don’t meet the standards must be marked “Not for Food Use” or designed with holes so the dish can’t be used for food.

• On Sept. 10, 1813, in the first unqualified defeat of a British naval squadron in history, U.S. Capt. Oliver Hazard Perry leads a fleet of nine American ships to victory over a squadron of six British warships.

After the battle, Perry sent a famous dispatch to U.S. Gen. William Henry Harrison that read, “We have met the enemy, and they are ours.”

• On Sept. 9, 1939, audiences at the Fox Theater in Riverside, California, get a surprise showing of “Gone with the Wind.” The film became an instant hit, breaking all box office records. It was nominated for more than a dozen Oscars and won nine.

• On Sept. 8, 1945, U.S. troops land in Korea to begin their postwar occupation of the southern part of that nation, one month after Soviet troops had entered northern Korea to begin their own occupation. The division of Korea quickly became permanent.

• On Sept. 12, 1951, former middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson defeats Randy Turpin to win back the belt after losing to Turpin two months prior. Robinson knocked Turpin down with a right to the jaw in the 10th round.

• On Sept. 11, 1965, the 1st Cavalry Division begins to arrive in South Vietnam, bringing U.S. troop strength to more than 125,000. The unit was the first full U.S. Army division deployed to Vietnam.

• On Sept. 7, 1977, President Jimmy Carter signs a treaty that will give Panama control over the Panama Canal beginning in the year 2000. A 1904 agreement had given the U.S. the right to build the canal and a renewable lease.

• On Sept. 13, 1980, country music artist Willie Nelson and his band perform at the White House with President Jimmy Carter in attendance.

Later that night, unbeknownst to the president, Nelson allegedly retired to the White House roof to smoke a marijuana cigarette.

How diners can prepare to go out as restaurants reopen

Many communities across the globe have begun to gradually reopen. That’s good news for the millions of small businesses that have struggled as the world responded with extreme caution to prevent the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus from spreading.

Estimates from the National Restaurant Association indicate that restaurant sales in the United States decreased by tens of billions of dollars in March and April, while forecasts predicted those numbers would be in the hundreds of billions by the end of the 2020. In recognition of the vital roles restaurants play in building and fostering strong communities, consumers are looking forward to returning to their favorite establishments as economies slowly reopen. Diners can do their part to make reopening efforts successful and sustainable by staying home if they are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19. Venturing out while symptomatic puts everyone, including restaurant workers and fellow diners, at risk, so it’s imperative that people pay attention to their bodies and avoid going out if they are experiencing even mild symptoms.

In addition to staying home if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, diners can take these steps to work in partnership with local restaurants as these vital components of the community begin to reopen. • Dine out in small groups. Phase 1 reopening guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended gatherings be limited to no more than 10 people.

But when dining out, consumers should keep their groups even smaller. An assortment of studies from the CDC have found that the virus is easily spread among groups of people in enclosed spaces. By limiting dinner parties to no more than the number of people in their households, consumers can help restaurants safely reopen. • Wear masks. Wearing a mask to a restaurant may seem odd, but by keeping their mask on until their food arrives, diners can help prevent the spread of the virus. The World Health
