A Spidery Conundrum

John B. Stephens

Splat! It has been a profuse spider season. Spider and flailing arm season that is. I hate running into a web, then wondering where the spider is. I’m always sure it is somewhere on me. Not a chance it sailed away on the broken web or scrambled onto a bush. It is definitely on me. I stomp and do a very unladylike dance. I look like a masochistic pervert as I slap away with both hands at my entire body. If the spider is on me, even if I don’t squash it, I’ll probably scare it to death. In spite of the fact that I don’t much care for spiders, I do feel kind of sorry for the poor things. They work so hard every night weaving their strands. Then early morning, just as they are enjoying their labor, along comes this nut with flailing arms and legs to destroy them. I do try not to kill any creature that is out of doors. If they enter my domain, they become fair game, if I can catch them. Recently, what my husband calls a little black spider but I call a big black spider, moved into our bedroom. He is an elusive bugger. He shows up now and then, either just beyond my reach, or when I am without a rolled up paper or a slipper in my hand. By the time I get prepared, he disappears. Each night when the cover sheet has been thoroughly shaken and the lights go out, I’m sure he will emerge from his hiding place with a distinct plan to bite me. Makes bedtime a bit unnerving. I know how those poor outdoor things feel each morning when the sun comes up. Perhaps my elusive indoor guy is a relative or friend of those outdoors, sent to get even with me. What if he is a she? What if she is pregnant? If I squash her, I’ll kill her whole family. If I don’t squash her, that same family may all grow up to live elusively in my bedroom. They’ll ruin my nerves and bite my flesh. What a conundrum! This morning I went outside to feed our feral cat, fill the birdbath, and put nuts on the tray for the blue jays. I didn’t run into a single web. I went around front to get the paper, bent over to pick it up, and...splat. Into my dance routine. Hot and rankled, I entered the house and walked into the bedroom to sit in my rocker and read the paper. There sat the black spider. The paper was in my hand. I couldn’t help myself. End of conundrum.

Most everyone has experienced that “Most Embarrassing Moment”, when it comes to food! It was not long ago when Grandma and I had the pleasure of taking our five-yearold Grandson Sean to lunch for his birthday. Since Sean had never eaten pizza it seemed like a great time for him to try it and then later he could spend some time in the Arcade game area of the pizza parlor. Since Grandma always worries about the Grandchildren’s eating habits we had to take along half of our kitchen food in Baggies just in case Sean didn’t like the pizza. We had a buffet selection of his favorite items as a back up precaution. While awaiting the arrival of our large pepperoni pizza, Grandma was doling out all of Sean’s favorite foods. Just as Sean selected a sliced tomato with his fork Grandma bumped his arm and the sliced tomato catapulted up into the air landing across the isle on top of someone’s large pizza that had just been delivered to that table by the waitress. I was stunned as I looked across at Sean’s sliced tomato lying upon the pizza. As I was wondering what should I do, I saw the patron coming up the isle with his soft drink. When he discovered the sliced tomato on his pizza he looked quizzically at me and then yelled out toward the waitress what is this gooey tomato thing doing on my pizza? Just about that time my grandson started to yell ... Hey Grandma where is my sliced tom...before he could utter the word tomato she shoved a grape into his mouth to silence him. By now the disturbance had

Zenyatta Win Key in Strong Breeders’ Cup Finish Buoyed by perhaps the greatest performance in Santa Anita history, the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting ended on a high note Sunday as the racing world continued to resonate with awe in the wake of superstar Zenyatta’s devastating win against males in Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic before an on-track crowd of 58,845. Held for an unprecedented second consecutive year at the same venue, the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships attracted a total of 96,496 fans on-track, up from 82,578 last year, for an increase of 17 percent. Friday’s attendance of 37,651 was an increase of 20 percent over last year’s day-one crowd of 31,257. “We are obviously very pleased with the way we were able to finish up this

week,” said Oak Tree Director and Executive Vice President Sherwood Chillingworth. “The Breeders’ Cup on both Friday and Saturday exceeded our expectations across the board. The fact that Zenyatta’s connections chose to run in the Classic on

Saturday set the table for what has got to be one of the most successful Breeders’ Cups of all-time and a performance that no one who was here will ever forget.” Compared to last year, on-track handle for the Breeders’ Cup increased both days,

despite the fact there was one less race carded on each day. Friday’s on-track handle of $7,097,789 was up 3.6 percent over last year and Saturday’s on-track take of $12,177,982 was up three percent over 2008’s figure. The common pool handle for Saturday’s 10-race card was $98,489,877, a decrease of six percent from last year’s 11-race program. The $49,875,648, wagered on Friday was a one percent increase over the 2008 10-race Friday card. This year’s twoday common pool total was $148,365,525, down from last year’s $155,740,328. As was the case with last year’s Breeders’ Cup, Oak Tree’s Pro-Ride synthetic main track performed flawlessly on racing’s biggest stage.

ero pi lot Chesley “Su l ly” Sullenberger has been named as the 2010 Rose Pa r a de g r a nd ma r sha l. Sullenberger gained international fame and recognit ion after successfully landing a crippled airliner in the Hudson River after taking off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Following takeoff, the US Airways plane was hit by a flock of geese, causing the aircraft to lose power to both of its jet engines. The Tournament of Roses announced the selection on its Facebook “fan page” shortly after the announcement at the Tournament House in Pasadena. Sullenberger was raised in Denison, Texas and had a distinguished career flying aircraft for the military before becoming a commercial pilot. Sullenberger now has over 40 years of commercial flying experience, with the most recent 29 of those serving as a captain at US Airways. Since the incident, Sullenberger has become an ad-hoc spokesman for airlines pilots and employees across the country, many of whom are underpaid and extremely overworked. His whistle-stop media tour has included appear-

ances on most every major radio and T.V. networks, including a recent stopover at local NPR affiliate KPCC to discuss the airline industry with “Air Talk” host Larry Mantle. Last year, it was television’s Cloris Leachman who was given the honor of presiding over the popular parade, and past grand ma rsha ls have included actors, astronauts, writers, artists, athletes and political figures. Early Grand Marshals were local heroes, many of them Tournament organizers. The first Grand Marshal from outside Pasadena was San Francisco Mayor James Rolph in 1930, and as the Tournament grew, so did the stature of its Grand Marshals. Mary Pickford, Earl Warren, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Gregory Peck, Bob Hope, Erma Bombeck, Henry “Hank” Aaron, the Apollo 12 astronauts, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Kate Smith, Gerald Ford, Lee Iaccoca, James Stewart, Pele a nd A ngela L a n s bury are just a few of the distinguished individuals who have held t he honored position. 1966 Grand Marshal Walt Disney rode in the Parade with Mickey Mouse, and Edgar Bergen brought Cha rl ie McCa rthy along in 1940. Shirley Temple, who was a 10-year old movie star when she led the 50th Rose Parade returned as diplomat Shirley Temple Black to serve as Grand Marshal of the Tournament’s Centennial celebration in 1989.

I speak with a bit of expertise in the area of car washes. Between us, my husband and I own no less than nine automobiles, many of them convertibles (all of these vintage British). When we need a car to look good, we take it to Fasching’s Car Wash. And when we need it to look great, we take it to George Fasching’s son Gregg whose detailing department makes all the difference in the world. Readers of these papers must agree with us, since Fasching’s Car Wash was voted best in the San Gabriel Valley by a substantial margin. Fasching’s Car Wash and Auto Detailing is a private company owned and operated by an Arcadia fixture, George Fasching. In addition to running the busiest car wash in town, George has spent years in public service in Arcadia. - By Susan Motander 425 N Santa Anita Ave., Arcadia, (626) 446-0654

CLEARMANS GALLERY -Photo By Terry Miller

A truly historic San Gabriel Valley landmark, Clearman’s Galley, or “The Boat,” was originally an actual sea-faring vessel, launched in 1913 as a mail-service ship between San Francisco and Alaska. After retiring from the its postal service duties, John Clearman brought the boat to San Gabriel in 1968 where it became a hamburger stand with patio seating.

Now, 40 years after serving its first hamburger, Clearman’s Galley has reopened as a larger version of “The Boat” that now seats almost 300 guests. Outside, the patio is larger too, big enough for 90 hungry sailors. With a new full-service bar pulling pints of over two dozen beers and more big-screen HD TVs, The Boat has quickly become a first choice venue for sports, entertainment and always a fun, family-friendly dining experience. 7215 N Rosemead Blvd., San Gabriel, (626) 286-1484, www.clearmansgalley.com

Growing up, Sarah Culberson struggled with issues of identity during her adolescence and especially in college. She would never have guessed what the truth of her past would unfold for her future. Sarah discovered that she was related to African royalty, a ruling Mende

W hat followed is an unforgettable, emotional journey of self-discovery. Zenyatta Win Key in Strong Breeders’ Cup Finish Continued from 3 “We had zero injuries on the main track over the two-day Breeders’ Cup,” said Chillingworth. “The main track played fair and safe, and we just can’t ask for anything more than that. I want to congratulate our Track Superintendant, Rich Tedesco, and

his crew for doing such an outstanding job. As we did last year, we had a safe, competitive two-day event on national television (ESPN and ABC) and that is certainly huge for us and for the sport.” A challenging local and national economy contributed

to significant declines in attendance and handle throughout the 31-day meeting which began on Sept. 30. Average daily on-track attendance declined by 11 percent, while on-track handle was down 16 percent. All sources handle was down 15 percent.

ver the years, red white + bluezz has established itself in Old Pasadena as one of the premier spots for a night out on the town. Some neighbors recall the early days of Alverno High School as a convent, where the sound of nuns singing would reverberate through the neighborhood. Today, the sounds are not quite as harmonious to nearby residents, and their negotiations with the school’s administration is continuing to attempt to address the noise and traffic issues caused by the school’s renting our of its facilities for events, among other concerns. Residents affected by the school’s facility rentals say the current administration has not adequately considered their needs and made the necessary changes to ensure their quality of life. “While neighbors know that every school needs to have fund raising events, the

use of the Villa has become excessive to the detriment of the neighborhood,” said Carolyn Simon, one of the residents who lives across from the eastern border of the private Catholic school for girls. The current negotiations came about when the school applied to the city for a conditional use permit to legitimize their fundraising activities. BANK OF AMERICA

Winner- Best Bank

When Amadeo Giannini founded the Bank of Italy in 1904 in San Francisco, I doubt that he realized he was beginning what would become one of the largest financial institutions in the world. My relationship with what is now known at the Bank of America began when I was only two days old. While I did not have much of a say in the banking decision, I have never regretted by grandfather’s choice. I get immediate service both on line, at the ATM and, on those rare occasions when I need them, the personnel in the bank. Our readers must agree as they voted Bank of America, Best Bank in the San Gabriel Valley. - By Susan Motander

Runner Up - Best Bowl

PASADENA

Located at 3545 E. Foothill Boulevard in Pasadena, 300 Bowling could be right up your alley. 300 is about bowling but a lot more – with a very unique and upscale twist. It’s “everything entertainment “under one roof” according to their web site. State-of-the-art bowling lanes, floor-to-ceiling video screens, casual-dining and more gourmet items, if you prefer. This could become your new favorite local hangout with friendly servers who will be glad to ensure your trip to 300 is memorable. As they say, “At 300, you’re Bound to Score!” The company has several other facilities in cities like New York and each, although following a similar creative theme, each has its own distinctive feel for the community it serves. 3545 East Foothill Blvd Pasadena (626) 351-8858, www.3hundred.com

CONSTRUCTION

The words “Craftsmen and “Contractors aren’t normally mentioned in the same sentence - but one local company, S&N Construction, might just change that perception forever. Around here, the name “S&N Construction has become synonymous with craftsmanship after years of satisfied clients and work done right. In fact, everything at S&N is custom ordered; there’ll be no cookie cutter projects with these pros. S&N prides themselves on being an “attention to detail contractor, and only the best will do for these perfectionists. The owners of S&N believe that if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing not just well, but exceptionally well. This philosophy has helped establish the company throughout the community and has kept the referrals coming. Be sure to talk to Nate, the owner. He’ll put your mind at ease and help figure out just how to tackle your particular project.

pened in the 1930s, Colonial Pharmacy in Arcadia seems like the type neighborhood pharmacy where smiling faces and personalized service keep customers coming back - and it surely is. But there’s something else that keeps owner/ pharmacist Mark Burstyn’s customers coming back time and again even as huge retail chains saturate the market and threaten the livelihood of community stores like this one. The good people at Colonial Pharmacy aren’t just smiling faces that remember your

name, their highly trained and certified pharmacists that can provide services you just won’t find at those large impersonal chain pharmacies. It’s these services like compounding custom formulations for natural hormone replacement therapy, vaccinations, blood tests and 1-stop anti-coagulation services - virtually unheard of in a retail setting - that made our readers recognize Colonial as the special place it is. Colonial was recently Medicare Accredited. A long process that most pharmacies have opted not to endure. In addition to outstanding services, Dr Burstyn has recently added a large selection of Homeopathic remedies for those looking for a more natural approach to health. For instance, Colonial has a natural flu spray during this flu season. Colonial widely known for its large inventory. They stock braces, wheelchairs, walkers, ostomy supplies, wound dressings, and diabetes supplies and shoes. Just like his customers, Burstyn is faced with new healthcare challenges nearly every day, and his response has been not merely his continued innovation, but one of genuine partnership with those customers in navigating the ever-changing healthcare landscape, saving money, saving time, and most importantly, saving health.

he Sierra Madre Woman’s Club is a 501(c)3 organization currently celebrating its 102nd year of operation in Sierra Madre. The proceeds from the Wistaria Thrift Shop, house rentals and club events support the upkeep of the club’s Historic Essick House while at the same time providing funding for the many charities the group continually supports. But according to these women, all the thanks for these efforts belong to the many members of the community who have supported them all these many years. Regular meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, starting on the fourth Wednesday in September through the fourth Wednesday in May, and feature stimulating and enjoyable programs. All regular meetings are held in their clubhouse, the Essick House, built in 1914. The group is always accepting new members from all around the San Gabriel Valley and continually urges interested women to join the club as they work together for the good of the club and the community. Potential new members should contact Chairwoman Phyllis Chapman at (626) 355-3928 or Rosemary Morabito at (818) 415-6189.

Runner Up - Best Martial Arts

The “Y” has long been associated with developing values in the young people who go there and encouraging the development of character has always been a hallmark of the organization. It’s therefore no surprise that they were voted best in the area of martial arts in our Readers’ Choice 2009 poll. No disrespect to Master Splinter, but martial arts is not all about Bruce Lee and Ninja Turtles. Respect and responsibility are key aspects of the study of martial arts; and not surprisingly, these are two of the four core values the YMCA stresses. While they were selected by our readers in the area of Martial Arts, there is always a great deal more going on at the “Y” and the staff is always glad to explain all the opportunities for physical fitness as well as good old fashioned fun. 501 S Mountain Ave., Monrovia, (626) 359-9244, www.safymca.org

alerted all the other diners in the restaurant to observe and wonder what was going to happen next? The waitress came up to the patron’s table and said... “Look Mister, I don’t know what happened, all I do is serve the pizza’s ... I don’t cook them. As the tomato incident began to grow into a heated discussion I immediately,

grabbed Sean and said ... “Hey, we’ve gotta get out of here now!” Quickly Grandma gathered all of Sean’s leftovers when he started to repeat his original inquiry “But... Grandma where is my tom...” Once again she shoved another grape into his mouth to silence any admission to the tomato mystery. Persuasively, I tugged Sean out of the booth and we moved toward the exit. Now

it was Sean’s turn to broadcast the incident for all nearby inquisitive patrons to hear. Gosh Grandpa ... I didn’t even get a chance to taste that sliced tomato, or that pepperoni pizza. I didn’t even get to play Arcade games like you promised. “Yea, Sean”, I said, I know how that is!” I didn’t get to have pizza either.” But that’s how life goes sometimes when your Grandma is given a bad headache!”

FELIKIAN’S CARPET ONE

The Dollmakers Kattywompus Runner Up- Best Toy Store You may know The Dollmakers’ Kattywompus from their appearances on CNN or E! Channel, Animal Planet or Channel 7 Eyewitness News. They’ve also been featured in Good Housekeeping and Sunset Magazines, as well as the Los Angeles Times. Their retail store is stuffed to the rafters with cool toys, both play and collectible dolls, doll clothes and accessories, and other exciting – and unexpected – gifts and treasures plus a music studio complete with guitar, dulcimer, fiddle & banjo lessons. For years they’ve had another “secret” business designing popular products for major manufacturers. From the original ‘80s Applause Batman doll, to current product like Target’s Fancy Nancy line – and, most recently, Discovery Kid’s items for JAKKS Pacific, they’ve been keeping busy, and keeping up with what’s cool in today’s toys.

WHO IMPROVES YOUR HOME?

Winner - Best Carpet

RC

Felikian’s Carpet One was established 30 years ago when two Armenian brothers, Martin and Charles, had a dream. They came to this country with very little except their ambition to build a solid future for their families and their ability and determination to work hard. In the last 5 years the “little family business” has tripled its volume and added two new locations to better serve its clients. The Temple City store carries only the best brands in carpet and laminate flooring products made to look like hardwood, stone or tile for a trendier look with different textures. According to their owners, the reason for Carpet One’s success is simple: They’re not perfect, but they’re honest and they stand behind every job they sell. That kind of word gets around! 9324 Lower Azusa Rd., Temple City, (626) 795-2821, www.felikianscarpet.com

This photo shows the adobe structure and the attached Baldwin annex that served as the home of Arcadia’s first mayor. Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin occupied this home from 1875 to his death in 1909. She had been strangled. Monrovia Police officers attempted to revive the 28 year old even using the Automatic External Defibrillator unit now regular equipment for the department. Monrovia Fire Department paramedics continued the attempt to revive the young woman to no avail. She was pronounced dead. Marinero was arrested. On Tuesday he was arraigned on one count of first degree murder with the enhancement alleging the “personal use of a deadly weapon” according to Sgt. With Our Gratitude

Methodist Hospital Foundation is proud to honor the following local businesses and faith communities that have participated in the Campaign for MethodistHospital. Our plans to create The Next Generation of Care will transform our campus, including a new state-of-the-art Hollfelder Emergency Care Center, two critical care units, three medical/surgical units and advanced medical information technology. These businesses and faith communities are helping us change lives, through their campaign contributions, by helping us raise community awareness of our cause, or through their support of our special events benefiting the campaign. On behalf of our staff, physicians, board of directors, volunteers, and our patients, we offer our special thanks to them. We encourage you to patronize those listed here who are helping us make a difference.
