Myrtle Merchants See Crowds on Black Friday Sales Reports Mixed Despite Increased Foot Traffic

Based on reports from various merchants in Old Town Monrovia, some holiday shoppers appear to be

turning to local businesses to avoid the chain store rush on Black Friday. Jill Super, owner of Eaton’s specialty store, said advertising brought in many customers on Black Friday. “We had an outstanding day all weekend Friday and Saturday,” Super said. “We had some good sales going for 25% off.” Another gift store in Old Town, Suburban Martini, reported seeing a lot of customers coming in. “We had regular little sales here and there and we gave people some discounts and free gifts with purchase,” said owner Kelly Goodkin. “Sales were fairly good.” According to Goodkin, many customers find it easier to shop local, and are able to find unique items. “I think that people just

don’t really have the energy to go and fight the crowds and get the same old stuff,” she said. At The Dollmakers, business on Black Friday was booming, said Cindy Ranger, one of three owners. “We did fantastic and are continuing to,” Ranger said. “We were going like crazy on Friday and have been doing very, very well ever since.” According to Ranger, the high-selling items this season are “fun, silly things.” “This year people are looking for something that’s funny and a stress reliever,” said Ranger. “And you get good service in a small store, so people are coming back to someone they know and looking for the comfort that.” At the Secret Pocket, owner Patricia Tran said she was pleasantly surprised at the number of customers who came in. The Secret Pocket, which has been open in Monrovia for three years, had a sale for 30 percent off after a purchase of $50 or more. Not all businesses caught the Black Friday shopping rush, however. Allure Clothing and Accessories reported that they saw some increased foot traffic, but that sales only picked up a little. At Segil Fine Arts Gallery, many people came in to pick up paintings they had bought in advance, but did not make many purchases. “Art just isn’t the same

Local thespian Barry Schwam takes a one man stand against hatred and counters LaRouche followers outside the Sierra Madre Post Office Tuesday afternoon. While the LaRouche supporters propped up an obviously altered image of President Omaba with a small moustache, Schwam started a petition “to institutionalize psychotic persons who compare Adolf Hitler to President Obama.”- Photo by Terry Miller

Local Actor Takes Stand against LaRouche Propaganda Camp BY TERRY MILLER

Mild Mannered local actor, Barry Schwam was a displeased, to say the least, when he saw a picture of President Obama digitally altered to depict him as Adolf Hitler. The posters were placed outside his local Post Office in Sierra Madre Tuesday afternoon. The Lyndon LaRouche

camp set up their abhorrence propaganda outside the US post office to a very mixed reaction. Schwam was so upset by the absurd parallels to Obama that he penned his own silent protest to voice his first amendment right! Schwam, who was recently married in Sierra Madre, held a sign (albeit a bit

faint) which read: Petition to institutionalize psychotic persons who compare Adolf Hitler to President Obama. While standing outside the post office, many Sierra Madre Residents did, in fact, sign Barry’s petition. One man yelled to the LaRouche people that they were “crazy”. What

Playhouse Hosts Elderly Couple Armed Robbers Take “The Best Christmas Robbed in their Hostages in Arcadia Pageant Ever” BY SAMEEA KAMAL Arcadia Driveway BY FRAN SYVERSON

You remember being in the children’s Christmas Pageant at your church, don’t you? The kids all dressed up like shepherds, wise men, angels or fuzzy sheep…girls vying for the role of Mary…the boys all ducking, looking the other way when the Sunday School teacher chooses this year’s Joseph…. Your proud parents and grandparents beaming at you as you process down the aisle toward Jesus’ manger. What tender reminiscences!

On Wednesday, November 25, an elderly couple was robbed in their driveway at approximately 7:30 p.m. at their residence in the 300 block of West Duarte Road. The suspects were described as two males in their teens, both with medium builds and dark clothing. According to police reports, the suspects approached the victims as they were unloading groceries from their vehicle in the driveway.

On Wednesday, November 29, an armed robbery occurred on the 100 block of W. Forest Avenue in Arcadia. At 7:20 am, three males confronted a male resident in his driveway, forcing him into his home at gunpoint, police reports say. The suspects bound the victim’s hands and feet, then confronted the victim’s wife and nine year old son at gun point and bound them. The male victim was choked until he gave the suspects cash, police report.

Diet or Feast?

Metro Briefs

I’m currently doing three things at one time. I’m eating, I’m reading a newspaper article on dieting, and I’m writing my thoughts on paper for a column. Which do I enjoy most? I dunno. It’s either eating or writing. Reading an article on dieting is not high on my list of fun things to do. It ranks only slightly above dieting itself. At this point we have to fast forward at least a couple of weeks. The previous two paragraphs were written on the open page of my spiral note pad. I have no idea exactly when I wrote them. I obviously was not thrilled with the article because I threw it away. Otherwise, it would have been tucked between the pages of that same spiral note pad. The pages of the pad tell me that after I wrote those two paragraphs, I took time out to write two columns appropriate for Thanksgiving. Now Thanksgiving has passed, which probably puts most of us back into the need to read about dieting. I don’t know if I can say all of my readers, but I know I can say most of my readers are like me. We have a lot for which to be thankful. One of the things for which I’m thankful is that my waistband still fits after my Thanksgiving feast. Another is that God was good enough to give someone the brains to invent elastic. Elastic makes it easier for waistbands to fit. Then, of course, there was the person bright enough to design overblouses that cover the elastic waistband that stretches not too prettily over the waistline that has expanded after the Thanksgiving feast. Okay, threw away the article on dieting, but sitting here writing the column in the comfort of an elastic waistband, my eye is drawn to an advertisement I see in a newspaper lying nearby. There is a little pill guaranteed to make my over-fed life a lot better. The message in the large print sounds great. The small print tells me if I take the pill, I may experience tiredness and fluid retention. It might destroy my liver and could even lead to heart failure. It also states that this particular pill might not be for everyone. They got that right. I think I’ll just settle for elastic and overblouses and prepare to enjoy Christmas and New Year’s feasts.

Most everyone who has walked past the perfume counter in the local department store would say that the perfume area is fragrant. Well, I won’t say our house smells ... but put on a blindfold while visiting and you might think you were in the cosmetic area of the department store. It’s not all bad but a little scent can go a long way toward teasing your allergy. Recently, my wife was chatting with her older sister, which is always troubling to me, as this nosey sibling is always telling my wife what she should do. Her sister’s latest pronouncement was that we should be more concerned about the environment! She thinks we should be more cautious of the air on the inside of our home. That the outgassing of our home products and potential mold accumulation must be immediately addressed for our health safety and the safety of the planet. I paid little attention as my wife relayed this blabber to me. I thought the mention of taking my wife shopping would cause her to forget all about smells and that Global Warming controversy. After all, her sister lives in upper New England on the seacoast, adjacent to a fish cannery, so what would she know about household odors as her smeller went badly long ago. My newly informed Environmentalist Partner met my shopping suggestion with glee. However, the shopping spree store that she selected became troubling. Why would this prim lady, who can hardly recognize the difference of one end of a hammer from the other, all of a sudden be insistent on going to the local hardware store to shop? Well, to my dismay, I soon found out that this was only the beginning of a new environmental protection study that she had started in our home. Her suggestion that we shop for a home ozone device to purify our household air was difficult. My lady environmentalist, who has trouble understanding some cooking recipes, was now armed with an air purifier information guide and had become an instant expert on the wattage and potential air cleansing capacity of each purifier. To further her air-purifying program, she began selecting moth crystals, automatic pop up air fresheners, scented candles, and various plug-in devices all of which were loaded into our shopping cart. Examination of air fresheners was tiring as there were over 25 different fragrances for me to sample to help the “Smell Queen” confirm her purchases. When the salesperson started to tell her about an automatic “Scent Air” home fragrance system I immediately sped the shopping cart to the check out stand. Now, several weeks later with my bronchitis in full bloom, our house is truly a perfumery. The potpourri dishes, lavender bags, and soap scents have saturated our linens and laundry. She almost included my underwear drawer, which I immediately exempted from the program. These fragrance devices are now everywhere. Yes, these

Where to Go: Giving for Their Home BY ERIN VOSTI LAL

With turkey leftovers still in my fridge, I am determined to begin my Christmas shopping early. Of course, I say this every year. But nothing is more gratifying than being able to relax as we near the holidays; instead of running around trying to find the perfect gift, and, when I can’t, settling on something that’s really not that great. Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing my favorite local stores places that are my go-to shops for the perfect gift, or a unique item for a client’s home. Each store has gifts and home décor items that are exceptional and beautiful, even fun and wacky. You’ll be sure to find that special something for someone! And, if you’re like me, you’ll also find a little something for yourself.

Suburban Martini 113 East Olive Monrovia http://www. suburbanmartini.com/

Suburban Martini has so many incredible, one-of-a-kind gifts such as jewelry, clothing and home décor (and a great selection of kitschy, fun gifts!), it’s hard not to walk out of here without something in your hand. What I love most about this unique store is their support of local artists. The majority of what they carry is made by a local artist, jeweler, or craftsperson. That also means that many items in the store can be custom made for that special person on your list. They have locally made soaps and scented candles with cool vintage labels, for anyone on your list that likes to fill their home with scents. I am in love with these adorable dishtowels that feature funny sayings (my favorite one says “I’m not a paper towel”) – they make for great hostess gifts! They have tea towels embroidered with festive ornaments and holiday motifs that are perfect for injecting some spirit into a powder room. They also carry a large collection of handmade ornaments which are great for any collector. There is also an extensive collection of artwork by local artists, from decoupage, paintings, sketches and vintage books framed into a collection. They even have beautiful unframed prints, created by a local art student as school projects. I was stunned by a collection of intricately handcarved boxes, shelves and organizers, made by a local artist. Anyone on your list who likes exceptional, artistic pieces will appreciate a gift from this store.

Magnolia literally has something for everyone here, and they carry loads of Christmas decorations for your own home. From the wine lover to the friend who loves to decorate, this store has it all. Besides clothing, jewelry and floral arrangements, they offer an extensive selection of gifts for the home. They carry everything to turn your home into a Winter Wonderland with ornaments, wreaths, table decorations, candles, and so on. For the pet lovers, they have the most adorable tea towels embroidered with dogs, little pompom fringe at the bottom, that have cute sayings, such as “Santa Paws” or “Party’s Rover.” These are great for powder rooms and add a bit of whimsy, I fell in love with a beautiful three-tier silver stand for my friends who love to entertain. It’s elegant, stately and reminded me of an antique piece, perfect for small appetizers or candies and cookies. They have a large selection of elegantly scented candles for the home, an easy gift to stash away for those unexpected guests. For those friends and family on the list that enjoy wine, Magnolia has cute bar towels and beautiful corkscrews which are sure to please any oenophile. I fell for the Laguiole horn corkscrew and bottle opener set.

Eatons Gifts carries tasteful and fun gifts, a great place to shop for anyone on your list who loves stuff for the home. Everything in the store has a very natural, organic or fun feel to it, while also being very refined. I was drawn to their unique and unusual candle holders which are made out of wax. With a pillar candle inside, they give off a soft glow. They also have wine glasses with rhinestones on the bottom of the stems – a great gift for any entertainer on your list. Eatons also carries a large selection of beautiful tabletop décor that is perfect for gift giving. I went crazy for salt and pepper shakers made out of shells (a must-have holiday gift for my newlywed friends who just got married in the islands), along with an elegant cheese knife set with mother of pearl handles. You can find anything for the tabletop here, and it is all unique and lovely. They have exquisite silk pillows that are almost iridescent, perfect for that home decorator on your list. There’s a collection of adorable tea towels for the holidays, and beautiful horn frames that are a sophisticated addition to any home. Even the candle snuffers are stylish and always make a great gift – no one likes to spray wax everywhere when blowing out candles.

Hodge Podge Gifts

2465 Huntington Drive San Marino, CA http://www. hodge-podge-gift.com/

Hodge Podge Gifts has an incredible selection of beautiful and fun home décor gifts. They carry an extensive list of items, such as lovely scented candles, kitchen items, adorable pet products and bath accessories, pillows, gorgeous photo albums it s all right here, and you can cross virtually everyone off your list in one visit. I particularly love their selection of pillows. My favorite are the embroidered pillows, each representing a state in the United States. Completely hand crafted, they have images of each state’s unique history and charm. My friend will be getting the Montana pillow, complete with an embroidered bear looking quite cheeky, amongst mountains, moose and other wildlife. Hodge Podge can order any state you want if they don’t have it in stock.

SASAN Warning: this store is not for the faint of heart. Fashion forward clothing is their deal. Go in a normal Nellie and walk out strutting your stuff with head turning looks. Not your run of the mill boutique, Sasan started out as a men’s store, and still half of the store is devoted to keeping your guy just as fashionable as you. What a great couple you’ll make walking down the street looking fierce and unquestionably fabulous. The targeted customer is 25-50 years old with the majority age between thirties and forties. The Staples: Novelty driven accented tops, dresses, and coats. Don’t Miss: The selection of fun jewelry by Tarina Tarantino. We Like: The bold attitude of the store that’ll spice up anyone’s look without going overboard. Fear not, the savvy staff will have you styling in no time. 340 E. SUO For ten years SUO has been pleasing San Gabriel residents with an eclectic look sure to soften up your wardrobe. The boutique is stocked with vintage-inspired feminine dresses and tops that won’t break the bank. There’s also an array of great costume jewelry, accessories, and inexpensive handbags taking note of designer trends. The look you’ll find here will keep you up with the Jones but will be classic enough to pull out of the closet for the coming years. Come with your daughter, sister, and cousin; you’ll all find something to fall in love with.

The Irish Gardner is a fun place to find elegant home dĂŠcor gifts, from candles, framed artwork, refined table settings and Christmas decorations. I enjoyed browsing their collection of large pillared candle holders which are striking and stately. In wood or gold, they are sure to add drama to any table, or fireplace (they are large enough to stand on the floor). And anyone on your list who loves theatrical dĂŠcor, these are perfect gifts. For the entertainer, Irish Gardner carries beautiful beaded coasters, crystal bottle stoppers, serving sets and stemware; anything for the table top they have on display, and many of the items have that sparkle to make a table special. The store has beautiful painted black trays with birds on it, a great gift for my mom who loves to serve tea and cakes to her guests. Their Christmas dĂŠcor is extensive, and if there is someone on your list who is a collector, you are sure to find something for them here. I love to give elegant tapered candle holders, and they carry crystal or silver ones that make great gifts. Even a set of silver measuring cups with angels on the handles are perfect for the person on your list who loves to bake.

Gold Bug is hands-down the place to shop for the person who has everything, who has a wicked sense of humor, or just loves unusual gifts. Their collection of extraordinary and curious gifts serve as both artwork and conversation pieces, with objects and jewelry that is fun and beautiful. Particularly fun is their collection of art made out of graphite. Shaped as twigs, animals, leaves, feet and various other forms, these hand-made, intricate objects are not only striking displayed as art, but they are functional writing tools as well. I fell in love with the statuary concrete pieces, a great gift for anyone on your list who loves to display stately pieces in their home or garden. Especially amusing is the baby head with a rhino horn – art for friends or family with a sense of humor. Their collection of John Derian decoupage pieces is incredibly unique and stunning. Myrtle Merchants See Crowds on Black Friday Continued from 1 kind of commodity,” said assistant to the owner Lynne Fearman. Historic Lighting, also located in Old Town Monrovia, said they did not see anything special on Black Friday. According to Dan Bell,

Management Analyst for the city of Monrovia, merchants in Old Town are anticipating a strong holiday season. Though the city did not have specific feedback on Black Friday, local stores have been active in holding open houses other events, such as

the free movie shown at the Krikorian Theater on Saturday. “I think if there’s anything we can take from it, it’s that merchants are engaged and active in making this a positive holiday season.”

Playhouse Hosts “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” Continued from 1 And everyone declaring this was “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!” Year after year, the “best!” But then, you didn’t have the bratty Herdman family in your pageant. The children in the holiday program at the Sierra Madre Playhouse do. And what a hilarious difference that makes! The Herdmans don’t even go to church, and the entire concept of the “true meaning of Christmas” is foreign to them. The only reason they came to be in the pageant is that they heard that cookies are served after rehearsals. Those Herdman kids— their reputation precedes them. Lie, cheat, steal? Yes. Cuss? Smoke cigars? Yes, even the girls. Can they be tamed enough to fit in with the other kids in the pageant?

That should have been a cinch, because Mrs. Armstrong has directed the pageant for years. But, as luck (bad luck, that is) would have it, she has broken a leg and is in the hospital. So, encouraged by a chorus of “you can do it,” Grace Bradley agrees to direct this year’s production. Betsy McIntyre manages her role well, ranging from frantic and overwhelmed to inspiring, patient, and persuasive. Oh, those rehearsals! The exuberant kids literally bounce around the church hall. Grace tries to set a reverent mood by reading the Bible’s Christmas story, but the Herdman kids come up with their own interpretations. After all, they’ve not heard the story before, so they find new meaning to the words. “Great with child”? Yes, indeedy…. While “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” abounds

with holiday music and exuberance, it also has gentle, poignant moments. Be sure to watch “Mary” beside the manger in one scene, looking ever so much like she is “pondering these things” in her heart. And note the Wise Men’s gifts, as interpreted by Herdman boys. P ig- t a i led A nd rea Sweeney as Beth Bradley enchantingly narrates briefly between scene changes. Alice (Marjorie Zuk) adds plenty of flounce to her insistence that she play Mary, because she “does it every year.” But lo and alas! This year she loses out to a Herdman! Lidia Ryan, playing Mrs. Armstrong, is also loath to relinquish her annual role as pageant director. So she manages to interject herself into the situation even from her hospital bed, complete with her broken leg encased

Local Actor Takes Stand against LaRouche Propaganda Camp Continued from 1 he’ll do with the petition, however, is unclear. According to Schwamm, a little humor perhaps was in order to diffuse such detestable and unwarranted hatred for America’s first Black President. One driver, so upset by the objectionable photos depicting Obama as Hitler, slammed on his breaks and uttered in no uncertain terms his feelings of disdain for the LaRouche propaganda camp. Luckily fists did not fly but it was a gut reaction many people felt as they attempted to mail their letters and bills Tuesday afternoon. Barry told the Sierra Madre Weekly that hate and violence is never the answer to differing opinions and he hoped that his counter protest made some think twice before reading hatemonger’s’ messages. The Weekly approached the man and woman who were in charge of the LaRouche table but they refused “to speak to the media.” The only comment uttered was from the woman at the LaRouche table: “Obama is just a big fart.”. As the honks of support for Barry Schwam’s one-man

campaign against ignorance and stupidity grew less frequent with the setting winter sun, he decided that his point was made and hopefully some people left with the awareness that hatred and misinformation is always around, we just have to silently and peacefully protest that which we do not believe to be so. For the record: here’s a look at who and what Lyndon LaRouche is: Lyndon Hermyle LaRouche, Jr. is an American self-styled economist, political activist, and the founder of several political organizations known collectively as the LaRouche movement. He has been a perennial candidate for President of the United States, having run in eight elections since 1976, once as a U.S. Labor Party candidate and seven times as a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination. He is the founder and contributing editor of the Executive Intelligence Review, and has written on economic, scientific, and political topics, as well as on history, philosophy, and psychoanalysis. In 1988 he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit mail

fraud and tax code violations, but continued his political activities from behind bars until his release in 1994 on parole. His defenders believe the prosecution was a politically motivated conspiracy involving government officials and a mass-media brainwashing campaign. His appellate attorney, Ramsey Clark, a former U.S. Attorney General, argued that the case represented an unprecedented abuse of power by the U.S. government in an effort to destroy the LaRouche movement. L a Rouche provokes sharply contrasting views. His supporters see him as a political leader in the tradition of Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr., and a brilliant thinker who has been unfairly persecuted, while critics regard him as a cult leader, conspiracy theorist, fascist, and anti-Semite. Norman Bailey, formerly with the National Security Council, described LaRouche’s staff in 1984 as one of the best private intelligence services in the world, while the Heritage Foundation has said he leads what is possibly one of the strangest political groups in American history.

Justin Larsen is stage manager. The talented Lois Tedrow returns as costume designer. Barry Schwam is sound designer, and Steve Shaw the sound operator. Credit both set and lighting design to Kristen Cox. Schuyler Gamick and Maureen Davis are the light operators. Michael Dessin is light/sound back-up. Don Bergman acts as technical guru, and led the construction crew of Kim Lingo, Cara Hanby, Lygia Firmani, Thiago Alegre, Pongnut Krainichadul, along with Larsen and Callaway. Anne Marie Atwan and Calaway are in charge of properties. John Johnson and Calaway did the program design and, with Donald Songster, the production photography, while Kate VanDevender created the poster art. Philip Sokoloff is publicist. This holiday frolic can be a delightful gift to your entire family, a sparkling contrast to the seasonal, oft-played

Scrooge fable. You won’t keep the kids up late, as “Pageant” is lively and short—just about an hour, with no intermission. Enjoy it at the Sierra Madre Playhouse with special weekday showings through Sun., Dec. 20. Curtain time is 8 p.m. on Thursdays (Dec. 10 & 17), Fridays (Dec. 4, 11, 18) and Saturdays (Dec. 5, 12, 19.) Matinees at 2:30 p.m. are on Saturdays (Dec. 12 & 19) and Sundays (Dec. 6, 13, 20.) All seats for the holiday performances of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” are $20. The Sierra Madre Playhouse is located at 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. City lots offer free parking. Pre-theater dining at local restaurants on Baldwin Avenue and Sierra Madre Boulevard can enhance your holiday festivities. For ticket reservations or more information, phone (626) 355-4318, or visit the website, www. sierramadreplayhouse.org, for online ticketing.

Playhouse Continued in plaster. In a clever twist, she and Mesdames McCarthy and Slocum (Mary Carol Kelly and Rosemary Gore, respectively) do a little wheelchair trio. Real-life father and son Paul and Matthew Bond play Grace’s husband Bob and son Charlie. Bob reluctantly but faithfully supports Grace as she copes with the pageant’s logistics. Some quick-change artistry transforms the kids into angels with pristine white garb and halos, shepherds in their dads’ bathrobes, and Wise Men with crowns partially askew. Rick Stubbs directs and accompanies the angelic (?) choir. The playbill bios reveal that the young actors are no novices. The roster of talented youngsters may well include someone you know, whether the church kids or the Herdmans. They are Lauren Mackenzie, Zayd Jaber, Kari Irwin, Dillon McIntire, Jade Budman, John Moreaux, Talia Saldana, Roberto Merkell, Maximilian Kent, Renzo Dela Pena, Sophia Davis, Grace Turner, Jessica Tupas, Dajema Ortiz, Jesnasha Jamison, Elysee Vielma, Ranya Jaber, Arianna Merkell, and Jayden Saldana. Stan Kelly again reprises his directorial role and also plays the Reverend in this comedy written by Barbara Robinson and based on her book. It’s produced for the Playhouse by Ward Calaway.

I

didn’t

visit the central coast for the Radisson Hotel. I went for wine tasting, steak, and sand dunes. But after checking into a room located a few yards from a runway full of small airplanes, the hotel became a surprising trip highlight. W hen not watch i ng planes take-off and land from my room (I couldn’t hear them because the hotel is well insulated), I was busy exploring Santa Maria Valley’s more popular attractions. My first stop was the legendary GuadalupeNipomo Sand Dunes (www. dunescenter.org), home to 19 miles of the largest, most biodiverse coastal dune-lagoon ecosystem on earth. To make the most of my visit, I started at the Dunes Center in the city of Guadalupe. Here, inside a beautifully restored craftsman house / visitor’s center, I met guide Dan McElhinney, who led a group of us on a hike into the 22,000-acre park. During the tour, Dan showed us the spot where the silent movie classic “The Ten Commandments” was filmed in 1923. Today the remains of the movie set are buried in the sand, with only a few artifacts visible. The

dunes were also featured in the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean III.” Our next stop was Oso Flaco Lake. The tour of this area begins with a walk through a riparian forest teeming with Arroyo willow, cottonwoods, ox tongue and twinberry, as well as poisonous hemlock, stinging needles and poison oak. While investigating the plants, we saw pack rat nests built in trees and ran into a few cute raccoons looking for scraps. At the banks of the natural, fresh water lake we stepped onto a serene wood-

My dinner featured a tender rib eye steak, succulent New Zealand lamb chops, pinquito beans, baked potato, grilled veggies and salad. While dining I admired the rustic décor, highlighted old Indian rugs and animal heads on the walls, and a very old wooden bar. I n t he mor n i ng, I watched planes come and go from my bed, and then exercised at the Radisson’s fitness center and relaxed in the sauna. I then enjoyed the hotel’s impressive Sunday brunch with champagne and live music.

en footbridge leading to the ocean. While on the bridge we saw ducks, swallows, American coots, cormorants and herons. We also saw large footprints in the sand left by roaming bobcats. For dinner I drove to the Far Western Tavern (www. farwesterntavern.com) in downtown Guadalupe, a 50year favorite for juicy steaks and fresh seafood. Recently named one of the “Top 10” barbecue restaurants in the western United States by Sunset Magazine, the Far Western serves a steady cliental of locals and hungry Highway 1 travelers.

After brunch I drove to the Riverbench Vineyard and Winer y (w w w.riverbench.com), located along Foxen Canyon Rd, in the heart of Santa Maria Valley wine country. Specializing in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the 300-acre winery features a unique tasting room located inside an historic 1920s Craftsman house. Padua Hills Theatre Opens for Las Posadas Dec 8 and 9 The historic Padua Hills Theatre in Claremont will present Las Posadas at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8 and again on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Padua Hills Theatre was established in 1928 by a group called the Mexican Players to bring Spanish themed plays and music to a mostly English-speaking audience. Their presentations continued to the late 1950’s. One of their most revered productions was the yearly Las Posadas, the traditional reenactment of the trip of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. It was typically led by children in a candlelight procession, knocking on doors and singing to request a place to stay. Then on Christmas Eve, a fiesta celebrates the birth of Christ with the breaking of a piñata, splaying toys and candy to the ground. This year, a bilingual group, La Escuela de Bellas Artes de Pomona will present an abbreviated version of Las Posadas. In addition, Grupo Folklorico Orgullo de Aztlan will perform traditional Mexican dances. Light refreshments will be served. The performance is suitable for children as young as five. Tickets are $15 for adults and children over age 12; $5 for children under 12. Reservations are required. Please call Claremont Heritage for more information: (909) 621-0848.

Real Estate Notes DAWN RICKABAUGH

Deadly Mistake #7: Don’t keep a careful accounting of the note payments you receive Let’s pretend that you have a nice juicy note you’re trying to sell . . . you got a 20% down payment from a buyer who had a 70 0 F ICO, t he loa n a mount was $100,000 at 12% interest. Fully amortized over 20 years, you’re supposed to be enjoying $1,101.09 a month. Wow, isn’t that great? Wouldn’t you be able to sell that baby for a nice fat price? C’mon . . . with an average discount, someone’s Dawn Rickabaugh is a RE broker with expertise in owner financing and RE notes. realestatenotes@ beaconmedianews.com

looking to bag a 15% return, for heaven’s sake! Yeah . . . unless the payments don’t come in on time. You could have a 42.9% interest rate, but it doesn’t matter, the return is irrelevant if the money isn’t flowing. When someone buys a note (or if you are holding a note for retirement income) the most important thing they want to know is how likely it is that future payments will continue to be paid as agreed. Most note buyers (the ones that will give you the best price) are not buying hoping they’ll get a chance to foreclose and own the property. They just want a predictable return.

$650,000 That’s why payment history is so important to document.

Now, if you’ve got a note that’s in default, the only people who will buy it are

Holiday Tour at the Castle Green in Old Pasadena The splendor of Pasadena’s golden era awaits you, as the Castle celebrates the holidays! Take a step back in time at the historic Castle Green, a blend of Moroccan and Victorian architecture, built in 1898 as part of the resort Hotel Green. Now privately owned apartments, and generally closed to public, the building will open its gates and welcome visitors, for the annual Holiday Tour on Sunday, December 6th. Once converted to private residences in the 1920’s, Castle Green attracted many designers, musicians, artists and collectors to live in the building. Those who find an interest in history, creative interior design, and cultural heritage, will see the original exterior and interior of this unique city landmark, the last remaining survivor of the hotel period in Pasadena. While trained docents will be available, you may walk at your own pace through the original public rooms and over 20 individual apartments, all differently interpreted for the holidays. See the Grand Salon, the Moorish and Turkish Rooms, the Palm Room, Sunroom and Veranda, the open cage elevator, fireplaces, hand-carved woodwork, and marble staircases, the bridge and penthouse, with a 360

A

view overlooking Pasadena, as well as artist studios. Also see a display of original woodcut prints despicting California landscapes by Frances Gearhart, a leader in the American Printmaking Movement, from the 1920’s and 30’s. A 12-foot Scotch pine and holiday music will welcome visitors entering the Grand Salon. Exhibits and signage describing particular rooms and features, as well as sweets and cider, coffee, and food samplings from local caterers, will also be provided. The semi-annual tours of the Castle Green are organized by volunteer members of the nonprofit support arm, Friends of the Castle Green,

whose mission is to provide and implement restoration to the building. All funds raised through the tours and merchandise sales are dedicated to the preservation of this landmark building. The Perfumery Continued from 2 scents wistfully drenched each room of our house. Returning home one day...phew those powerful fragrances really hit my nose! Oh, how I longed for the return of those previously wonderful kitchen aromas. Oh ... the smell a pot roast simmering in the oven, freshly baked cakes and pies. Yes, I

hungered for those garlic and onion delicacies we used to have for dinner. Not so now! We are eating out more often to avoid any further house contaminations. Yes, now because of “budget constraints” caused by the decontamination program expenses, she is continuously searching for restaurants with those “two

for one” dinner specials. But not me! I am now searching for those restaurants with those “good ole” home-cooking smells. You know...macaroni and cheese, meatballs and spaghetti sauce, blackened halibut and all those other wonderful and smelly dinner fragrances that really tantalize the taste buds.
