New Location, New Queen and a New Era for Doo Dah By Terry Miller
Daring to go where no parade has gone before, this year’s May 1st - Pasadena Doo Dah Parade will venture east for the first time in its extremely colorful and eclectic history. While the Parade has enjoyed much popular success in the Old Pasadena retail and entertainment district, organizers are excited to bring the diverse parade to the town-like setting of East Pasadena. “Old Pasadena has been a terrific backdrop and host for the Doo Dah Parade,” says organizer Tom Coston. “But with Doo Dah we see an opportunity to keep it fresh and interesting. We fondly leave Old Pasadena on the cusp of predictability. We look upon East Pasadena as an exciting frontier with its own local character and possibilities.” The Pasadena Doo Dah Parade originated in Old Pasadena, then “Old Town,” in 1978 as a spontaneous grassroots event. Known as the “Other Parade,” it soon gained national attention as the eccentric alter-ego to the Tournament of Roses.

In 1980 there were an estimated 10,000 Black Bears in California now those estimates are near 40,000. The California Department of Fish and Game has handed a proposal to the Fish and Game commission aimed at keeping up with the rising population of black bears in the state. About 38,000-40,000 black bears live in the state now, according to Harry Morse, Fish and Game Information Officer for Central and Southern California. About 300 to 500 of those bears are estimated to be in the San Gabriel mountains, and the recent increase in encounters in Duarte and Monrovia has caused some alarm in the foothill communities. The Monrovia Police Department received almost four times the number of bear related calls in 2009 compared to 2008. The Department received 464

We live in such a strange, screwed up, litigious society that almost anything is believable. Lawsuits appear to be the sport of the day. An example of this is something I read about just recently. A G er m a n ba n k robber was arrested after a teller realized the robber was hard of hearing so she tripped an alarm. According to a Chicago newspaper, the robber is now suing the bank for exploiting his disability. That makes as much sense as the burglar who was trying to break into a commercial building through a roof door. He stepped on a sky light and fell through. He sued the company the window belonged to. Go figure. I find those stories humorous but scary because they show just how vulnerable we are. Another example of mankind's vulnerability came through on the internet. It actually makes more sense than the first two. A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his f lashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a CD player to place in his sack, a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying, “Jesus is watching you.” He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off and froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head, promised himself a vacation after the next big score, then clicked the light back on and began searching for more valuables. Just as he pulled an HD TV out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard, “Jesus is watching you.” Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his f lashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. “Did you say that?” he hissed at the parrot. “Yep,” the parrot confessed, then squawked, “I'm just trying to warn you.” “Warn me huh? Who in the world are you?” “Moses,” replied the bird. “Moses?” the burglar laughed. “What kind of stupid people would name a parrot Moses?” The bird promptly answered, “Probably the same kind of people that would name a rottweiler Jesus.”

Today’s economy is changing the way people shop. This desperate financial situation is causing merchants to go all out to attract customers. During the recent Holiday Season many retailers put most of their store items on sale before the season was over. Newspapers are now saturated with coupon offers involving food, clothing, and services. It’s apparent that coupon shopping is now chic. Well, this economic “Coupon Craze” has struck like lightening at our house. My “Coupon Clipper” is in a full scissors hold mode. Not a day goes by without her revealing to me how much she has saved with her coupon shopping! But all of this coupon mania has not been without serious consequences. While previously her coupon removals were restricted to the full-page food ads or the Sunday inserts, my newspaper looks like a kindergarten paper-cutting project. But now, with the advent of retailers offering money saving coupons on an enormous range of items, she has little respect for the visual appearance of my newspaper. Her coupon scissors have even invaded my coveted Business and Sports Sections with scalpel like deftness. A discount coupon incident that recently occurred at the grocery store checkout stand was my final shopping trip with her. As my “Thrifty Missy” was frantically searching her coupon shopping bag for a twenty-five cent savings coupon for dental paste an irritated shopper behind us yelled “Hey Lady forget the coupon. Here’s a quarter now move it on” Well, it was now apparent that her “Coupon-eze” had an impact upon her couture fashions. Unable to find that tiny little coupon promptly in her shopping bags, she realized she must invest in suitable coupon carrying apparel. To carry these financial certificates she purchased coupon bags, shopping bags, clutch purses, belly bags, fanny packs and even money belts but still she was not comfortable with the safe keeping of these “money savers”. I suggested that she should go back to her old “Corset Garter Belt” as it never let her down. However, that suggestion was met with considerable unfriendliness! Well, acting as the Financial Councilor of the family, I did a brief cost accounting on her recently purchased fashion accessories. I estimated that if she continues her adept money saving coupon program she would recover the cost of her fashion bags, belts, and beads in about twenty-six years.

Public School Just Doesn’t Add Up My fiancé and I are expecting a baby boy in a few months and recently debated our opinions on his education for the future. We both agree that the kind of education a person receives is a strong factor in how productive a society member they will be. However, she believes he can get the same education in a public school that he can in a private one. I beg to differ. are similarities between them. Both want to provide their students with the best possible education that they can. They both have standardized testing to evaluate students’ progress and to learn how they can improve, and each have extra-curricular activities and sports to encourage teamwork. There are also substantial differences. Private schools have higher test scores t han public schools because class sizes are significantly smaller and teachers have more time to spend with each student. Teachers spend less time disciplining and more times educating, and violence is not tolerated. Private schools main goal is to prepare its students for college. While ultimately both public and private schools
should work together to set high standards for students to achieve success, the fact is that today it is only the private schools that are doing so. The students in these schools have higher education goals and strive to excel. Arboretum Abuzz with Activity under New CEO Continued from the First Page
hof begins his second 100 days, he seems to have little patience or time to explain what has happened so far, but gushes with visions, plans and dreams about what the Arboretum will become under his leadership. One thing he has definitely determined, he says is “Learning that this magnificent Arboretum is truly a one-of-a-kind garden.” Schulhof speaks and moves quickly as we found out in a brief interview in his office— shortened actually as he took time out between meetings— he described his enthusiasm for developing the County facility to continue to embrace world-wide visitors and appeal to the community as a place of beauty and an educational center for botany. The first thing he recognized, he says, is the impact the garden has had on all Southern California communities. “You cannot drive in any neighborhood in Southern California without seeing the affects the Arboretum has had over the years as it worked with the nursery industry to bring the blossoming trees for us to enjoy.” The Arboretum has worked with the commercial nursery industry for over a half-century to introduce new plants at no cost to them, a plan authorized in 1956 under a California Assembly bill. Schulhof listed the Coral Tree, Silk Floss Tree, Blue Hibiscus and the special hybrid gazania, known as the Freeway Daisy that borders our local highways, and fires off their names by their Latin nomenclature in rapid-fire succession. He speaks quickly, spilling out facts and figures, hopes and dreams for the Arboretum that can be overwhelming unless, like him, you hold landscape architecture, public garden administration and forestry degrees from U C Berkeley, where he was an undergraduate, and University of Delaware and Harvard University where he continued Masters' studies. He demurs that he has not had time to get into everything in any real depth, but is getting a handle on the nearly 60 separate programs that are in place just during the month of February. Foundation, the Trustees that support and guide the gardens. His vision includes both enhanced and new programs. “Roots and Shoots”, one of the Arboretum's oldest programs for youngsters was mentioned several times by Schulhof as a program he hopes to see enhanced. He sees this as an opportunity to appeal to the young and their families as the community shows its eagerness to learn about eco-systems, and, as he says, learn “how to live in harmony with nature.” He fervently insists he will turn the garden into a blooming paradise (which it mostly is now) for the beauty it casts while at the same time opening up opportunities for the public to learn about the world of plants and its role in the environment through classes, training, and other learning vehicles. Totally separate from the ethno botany occurring at the gardens, the historic collection is equally important, he says. He has been a supporter of continuing restoration programs since virtually the first day he arrived in Arcadia. Although many projects in the Historic Collection were under way before he accepted the post at the Arboretum, a committee of local residents were advocating for restoration
of the adobe structure that is alongside the lagoon and Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin's residence that once was attached to it. He addressed an event held to bring attention to the deterioration of the adobe indicating to them that the project would receive his support. The Historic Collection, in the meantime is not going unrecognized. At the present time, the Coach Barn, where Baldwin, the City of Arcadia's first Mayor, kept his thoroughbred horses in grand style, is undergoing a paint job which will be completed next month. Concurrently, restoration of the Depot is almost complete and is set to open in March with the raised platform renovated and the brick platform, which had subsided over the years, re-set. The Depot was constructed by the Atcheson Topeka and the Santa Fe Railroad in 1890 at a site north of the Arboretum, but was moved to the gardens in 1970 to preserve yet another piece of Arcadia's history. The Queen Anne Cottage has been kept in fair shape over the years as an icon of the garden, and centerpiece of history. But the adobe, once thought to be built by Hugo Reid, an early owner of the Santa Anita Rancho, is now believed to be an adobe homestead built

Baroque and Brazil to Flavor Santa Cecilia Concert at Occidental College By Bill Peters

This season the orchestra has scheduled five concerts, the third being held this Sunday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. in Thorne Hall on the campus of Occidental College under the leadership of its music director and conductor, Sonia Marie De Leon de Vega. Sunday's concert carr ies t he t it le “Ba roque Meets Brazil” and with its program of Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebast ian Bach a nd Henr i Villa Lobos composit ions, it takes on the old and the new with a vengeance.
Salsy Kerkonian, the principal flute of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra, will perform Vivaldi’s Flute Concerto in D-major, called “Il Cardellino” (“The Goldfinch”) with the orchestra at its 4:00 p.m. concert Sunday, Feb. 21 in Occidental College’s Thorne Hall.

Supported by her well known husband and Internist at Methodist, Dr. Andrew Lee and even more well-known daughter, Courtney. Lee is no stranger to Roya lt y. Her daughter Court ney Lee was last year’s Tournament of Roses Rose Queen who spent the year serving her community with her Rose Court closely in toe. The now legendary party took place at Sironas at the Santa Anita Race Track for the second year in a row and was well attended by supporters and friends of the hospital. Revelers got a chance to sample culinary creations from some of the top restaurants on the area – there was ample wine and beer was available for a nominal fee. Recycling, Reusing Grandma’s Old Stuff By Erin Vosti Lal
What do you do when you have inherited good quality furniture from a relative, but it doesn’t quite suit your taste or your home? This was the dilemma of my client who had recently moved to a mid-century modern condo in San Francisco. Her previous home was well-suited for a set of very beautiful Chippendale-style dining chairs and an antique table she had inherited from her grandmother. The set was appropriate for my client’s dining room at the time, which had ornate trim molding from the 1930’s. Back then, we decided to keep the table and chairs and use it in her dining room to save on the budget, and because the set held sentimental value to her. Remembering dinners at that very table with her family at her grandmother’s house kept her from getting rid of it altogether. But how would it work in her new home with floorto-ceiling windows and modern architectural details? It was time to update the set and give it a current look, while keeping its sentimental value. The set of chairs are very traditional, with ornate detail and delicate carvings on the splay. This particular set was in the style of Chippendale, but not originals, or precious antiques. Because of this, modifications would be easier to do, and wouldn’t ruin any potential value of the pieces. To give them a more Erin Vosti Lal is an Interior Designer based in Monrovia. modern feel, and to suit my client’s taste a bit more, I recommended painting them a creamy white with gray undertones. This particular white is one of my favorite Benjamin Moore colors that is perfect for painting furniture, and isn’t stark or too bright. For the seats, I suggested reupholstering them in an outdoor fabric (great for any food stains!), which gave them a slightly more current look, but with a pattern of scrolled lattice to match the carvings of the chairs. This contemporary update would work well with such a modern room. In addition, with the neutral colors of the fabric, it would blend the styles seamlessly. The dining table would have to be updated as well, and given a more current feel. I found a stain that was dark enough to modernize it a bit, but it would remain authentic enough so that the grain and beautiful wood imperfections could still come

through. Dining room light fixtures can be difficult to find, because oftentimes they are too traditional, or too modern. In a nod to the crystal chandelier that hung over the table at the client’s grandmother’s house, and to add an element of sparkle, I recommended a Paris Flea Market chandelier from Visual Comfort. It’s just girly enough to add a feminine touch to the dining area, and traditional enough to complement the table and chairs; but it’s also simple enough to match the architecture and give the room a good dose of “mixing.” In the polished silver finish, the fixture has a modern feel. The client had also inherited some china from her grandmother. It isn’t enough to have a complete set, and is a combination of different patterns. It’s also a bit dated for her to use, and not her taste, but the patterns and colors are very beautiful.
To add some color to the butter gray paint we extended from the living room walls (since there is virtually no division of the rooms), I sketched out a simple oval pattern in which to hang the plates as an art installation. By doing this, she’s able to keep the memories of her grandmother in a way that makes sense for her. And with just the cost of plate hangers, it is also very budget-friendly! Below the display of plates, a simple, white lacquered parsons console would serve as a buffet for gatherings. The lines of a parsons table are so clean and basic, but it’s also a great transition piece to help blend the different styles. We were able to recycle and reuse grandma’s traditional furniture, and bring them up-to-date to fit nicely into a modern home, with modern architecture and modern decorative touches. I think grandma would be proud!

Valentines’ Day has to be the worst day of the year for so many people. Think about a day that reminds so many of something lacking in their life or of a bad relationship with memories so tough you try to never think of them. Is this a celebration? Is this a day for candy and roses? Is this a day to sit home and hide from the world? Please let this day pass by another year and realize this is a day to love yourself and be glad you have wonderful friends and coworkers and neighbors who love you. This does not have to be a day for romance. Take a day to tell people you care about them and do not watch the movie channel with all the happy- ending stories. Make your own happy ending and be glad this day only comes around once a year. Ask a favorite friend to join you for dinner. Serve something healthy and delicious and make plans for the upcoming spring and summer. Going out may not be at the top of your list so cook something simple that feels special. Let me lure you to a seafood recipe for any two people just enjoying time together. You’ll Need: 1 jar roasted red peppers, in 1/2-inch strips 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons of capers 1/4¼ to 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil Salt and pepper 1 cup white wine 1 cup water 1 tablespoon olive oil 3 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced 2 bags baby spinach 1 1/2 pounds or 4 nice pieces of cod fillets crisp chilled white wine. Chocolate covered strawberries and champagne can be added for the final touch, and I would recommend this for those of you celebrating years together with your Valentine. Celebrate loving life and loving good food!
Combine the red pepper st rips, ext ra-virg in olive oil, and next four ingredients. Let these flavors marry. Place cod in a lightly greased and shallow roasting pan. Pour wine and water over the fish and cover loosely with foil. Bake this at 450 degrees for 15-18 minutes. Keep fish warm on a serving platter. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until slightly browned. Reduce heat and add spinach. Cook until wilted. Place the cod on a nest of spinach covered with your marinated capers and peppers.

A Day in San Juan Capistrano

Each March hundreds of thousands of swallows fly into San Juan Capistrano to relax in mud nests and enjoy the warm coastal climate. I don’t visit the city as often, but when I do it’s always a fun and rewarding experience. Some friends and I began a recent getaway to the town at Mission San Juan Capistrano, the state’s oldest and most famous mission. Originally founded on October 30, 1775, the site was abandoned eight days later after an attack at the San Diego Mission sent shock waves up the coast, causing builders to bury their church bells and flee. T he mission wa s founded again a year later on November 1, 1776 when father Junipero Serra returned to t he site and found the original bells and cross still safe in their hiding place in the ground. Shortly thereafter a little adobe chapel was built, which to this day stands as the oldest church
structure in California. After completing the chapel the Spaniards built a magnificent stone church, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1812. Today the 10-acre mission grounds feature numerous buildings and spectacular ruins from the early days of California. There are also beautiful gardens, statues, fountains and walkways, as well as a cemetery where former inhabitants are buried in marked and unmarked graves. After touring the mission, we walked a couple blocks to Los Rios Historic District, one of the oldest continuing neighborhoods in the state. Located across the railroad tracks of the Capistrano Depot, the area resembles a movie set and boasts 31 classic structures lining both sides of Los Rios Street. Among these structures are three adobe homes built in 1794 for Mission families. Other neighborhood highlights include the O’Neill
Museum, a 100-year-old wooden structure with period furniture and guided history tours; the Zoomars Petting Zoo, where children can ride ponies and feed rabbits, goats and llamas. There are also a handful of interesting shops and cafes – all located in historic old homes, shaded by willow, eucalyptus and palm trees, and cactus and bougainvillea plants. From the Los Rios we got back in the car drove a few miles down Ortega Highway to Caspers Wilderness Park, an 8,000 acre protected wilderness preserve nestled among t he r iver t er races a nd sandstone canyons of the western coastal Santa Ana Mountains. The park offers picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and numerous camp sites. During our visit we found a secluded valley, surrounded by native Live Oak and California Sycamore trees and enjoyed a picnic. While eating we spotted rabbits and squirrels. After lunch we found a hiking trail and followed it over rocks and cactus to a beautiful flowing stream at the base of a verdant hill. The judges, a delightful motley crew of professionals and those wishing they were (plus a host of previous and delicious Doo Dah celebs) made up a standing room only party the likes of which the Legion doesn’t usually see. There was the ever-present Count Smokula; the world’s most famous belly dancer; Uncle Fester illuminating us all; the Naked Opera Singer (aka Voodoo Princess Christina Linhardt) who is best known for her Theatre Therapy and Ethnic Dance as well as he astounding voice; Pasadena’s PIO Ann Erdman and Tom Coston ( Lightbring-
er Guru) were on hand as judges; and a host of former Queens including Naughty Mickie and this year’s queen Skittles as well as wanna be Kinks, musicians, police officers, you might say the gathering was a sort of melting pot in the manner of New York’s Ellis Island of yesteryear with a dash of Studio 54 thrown in for good measure. Indeed a cauldron of characters. This year’s selection of Erica Valentine delighted everyone as he (Erica) has been a perennial Queen candidate and now selected the first-ever male queen. The guitar work of this uncommonly tall, talented diva has finally paid off and is well-respected by all bands with whom
he’s worked. For his 2010 stab at the coveted title, Snotty Scotty and Horses on Astroturf backed up the axe Queen’s exceptionally fast fingers as Erica made love to the Strat’s fretboard. The wild and wonderful party atmosphere, emceed by Dr. Demento this year, has been a rite of passage for the eclectic Doo Dah crew and devotees for centuries (well, okay, a few decades). Over 1000 revelers will be led by Snotty Scotty and the Hankies at this year’s May 1st Doo Dah Parade, featuring tons of other bands and general silliness. Bah Records, which started in Old Pasadena on Fair Oaks in 1971, is now settled on Colorado Blvd. in East Pasadena. Jeremy Brandt is the CEO of companies like 1800CashOffer, HomeFlux. com and FastHomeOffer. com…all companies that bring lots of distressed sellers, investors and short sale agents together. Over the past several months he's been receiving all kinds of questions and complaints from his short sale agents about trouble with second lien holders. Read the full article, written by CNBC Real Estate Reporter, Diana Olick, at: http://www.cnbc.com/ id/34877347. Brandt has apparently documented at least 200 agents that have had trouble with Citi Mortgage, JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America and other large banks, and a friend of mine recently told me the same thing. She works tirelessly to help troubled home owners. She spends countless hours working with the lenders to get short sales
approved so people can move on with their lives, and then is asked for most of her commission at the closing table by these . . . banks (to be politically correct, because I was actually thinking of other descriptive words). Since there’s no equity to cover many second mortgages in a foreclosure/short sale situation, they’re typically getting very little at the closing table. So, they got this bright idea . . . why not soak it from the agents or the buyer, and have them pay a little cash on the side? All off the books, of course, like a mangy drug deal, because if the first lien holder knew this was going on, they would definitely cancel the transaction and just take the property to foreclosure to wipe the 2nd off completely. A HUD specialist commented that this is clearly il-
legal and a violation of RESPA. So far, there aren’t any active investigations, though . . . But why would there be? I mean, big banks are ‘too big to fail,’ so we’re rescuing them with taxpayer dollars anyway . . . why would we care that the poor beggars are grabbing for a little more? Just look the other way, George . . . All the new mortgage regulations that are effective as of January 1st are cumbersome and ultimately misguided and damaging to the consumer, but probably well-intentioned (never mind that the original fraud was perpetuated by the Fed and the fiscal policy established in Washington and on Wall Street that allowed the mortgage debacle in the first place). It reminds me of the massive increase in airport security imposed on millions of average citizens after the “authorities” allow a known terrorist suspect to board a plane. But it’s a good plan,

Eventually, he started sponsoring his own home builds in the outlying areas of suburban Tijuana, Mexico through his chiropractic practice. As a celebration of the 25th anniversary of his practice, Budincich and his wife coordinated four aircraft including flying both his single engine Cessna aircraft with volunteer pilots, on December’s medical outreach trip to rural Santo Tomas and San Vicente in coastal, Northern Baja. Four dentists, four chiropractors and a Mexican M.D., were joined by a JPL scientist, Dr Baines, who piloted one of the planes, then assisted with dental support functions, optometry, and the team’s meals. “ W e’ r e j u s t n o t equipped to know who is the neediest so Baja Christian Ministries of Chino does the ground work to choose the most deserving families to receive a free home through their Mexican-based organization and Tijuana personnel,” comments Budincich. goes down to build homes, Budincich and his foundation come up with the volunteers and the $6300 needed to build each simple home with an 8’ deep pit toilet. “It’s not a pretty topic, but it’s a critical step up for those in need that their baño should last ten to twenty years with very minimal maintenance..” “These remote areas frequently have no running water and no legal electric power in their homes,” he continues. “They might throw a homemade hook sharpened on the inside to cut into a live wire, then throw it over a power line pulling it down to cut in to make contact. Then they run it for hundreds of yards to run a little TV and a light bulb. Residents buy water from a truck that delivers weekly to fill 55 gallon drums, which they ladle into five gallon buckets for daily drinking and washing. Many of these people have never ever experienced a hot shower in their lives.” “Our new dwellings have a concrete floor, composition roof, and plywood siding walls on the outside,” describes Dr. Bud. “The new owners can add stucco later if they like. It gets them up off the cold, wet dirt floor. They have a door they can now lock for the first time ever. This is an opportunity for pride of ownership for those who might never otherwise afford a home. It’s very en-
ergizing and rewarding to all of us.” Dr. Bud is never one to sit back, reflecting on past accomplishments of his dozens of Mexico medical outreach trips, fifteen simple homes built, and a successful practice. His eyes and his heart are always focused on the next charitable endeavor, as he sees his life as one of service. Now that his 25th Budincich Chiropractic Clinic anniversary trip is behind them, he’s focused on the next medical fly-in mission in early February. Volunteers are always critical to the success of his outreaches. Robert Redford Honored at USC Theatre School’s Inaugural Gala Fund-raiser Celebrities and fans from around the county converged in Beverly Hills on February 10 to celebrate the legacy of legendary film star Robert Redford, who was honored at the USC School of Theatre’s inaugural gala fund-raiser at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The Santa Monica native was presented with the school’s newly established “Robert Redford Award for Engaged Artists,” to be given annually in recognition of those artists who have distinguished themselves not only in the exemplary quality, skill and innovation of their work but also in their public commitment to social responsibility, to increasing awareness of global issues and events and to inspiring and empowering young people. Although Redford has received some of the entertainment industry’s highest accolades, this is the first award named after him. The event drew more than 550 people and raised $200,000 for scholarship support for the next generation of artists at the USC School of Theatre.

Robert Fasching and Taylor Earnest were married at Holy Angels Church in Arcadia on January 9. Bob is the son of former mayor George and Geri Fasching of Arcadia and Taylor is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Earnest of Brea.
The reception was held at Bridges Auditorium at Claremont Colleges immediately following the service. The following day the couple flew to the Virgin Islands for a one-week honeymoon. They make their home in Irvine.

Dana Middle School Breaks Guinness Record It was exciting. With fire and police chiefs, mayor, council members and other VIPs acting as “celebrity” judges, 800 students at Dana Middle School, along with over 80,000 students throughout California, broke the Guinness world record of “the most people jumping rope at the same time. Students jumped rope on February 1st, from 9-9:10 a.m., with other schools (coordinated via live Webcast) to break the existing record of 59,000 people held by Australia. Janna Sanchez headed up the event, led by the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAPERD). A fantastic endeavor! Jill Mathis Liddle Lowe Jill Lowe passed away on February 5, 2010 in Arcadia, CA. She was born on August 20, 1934 in Wyandotte, Michigan. Jill had spent more than half her life (46 years) as a school teacher and vice principal throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Her love of teaching children was her passion. Jill acquired several hobbies after retirement, one being quilting. She handmade several quilts for every one of her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. They truly are the treasures of the family. Jill’s love of her children was her driving force, she would do anything just to be with one or all of them at any given moment. Jill is survived by her children Craig Lowe (Susan), Alyssa Ruffolo, Lori Davies, Christopher Lowe, Cassandra Meyer (Steve); grandchildren Craig Lowe, Dav id Lowe (Ch r ist a), Travis Lowe, Roy Davies (Cheri), Jonathon Davies (Natalie), Rebecka Ruffolo
Bryant (Matthew), Corey Meyer and Branden Meyer; great grandchildren, Roy Davies, Reagan Davies and McKenna Bryant; sister Jari Stuart ( John) and brother Lewis Rogers Liddle and many nieces and nephews. Her son, David L. Lowe preceded her in death in 1979. Jill’s memory will be greatly cherished by all who knew her. A memorial service and reception will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 20 at Church of the Good Shepherd (400 W. Duarte Road, Arcadia). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CLLCURE.ORG. Barbara Bell Dittmar Died, age 96, on January 9, 2009 in Fullerton. Born in Los Angles April 23, 1913, survived by sons Gary (Mason) of Fountain Valley, Jim (Sherr y) of Honolulu, daughter in law Rise, and Grandson Christopher of Honolulu. Her family were early California pioneers. Her material grandmother was born in covered wagon in Placerville in 1850, her paternal grandmother came to California as young girl in a covered wagon from Minnesota in 1870's Her husband Richard Bartholomew Dittmar passed away in 1985. She had a full life having traveled the world and lived in Chicago, Illinois, Washington DC, Los Alamos, New Mexico an in Arcadia from 1949 to 1979. She was active in Arcadia Methodist Hospital Auxiliary. The Family requests donations be made to the First Methodist Church of Costa Mesa.

46th Annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design The Cravens Estate, located on what was referred to as “Millionaire’s Row,” was designed in the style of the Chateau Vauxle-Vicomte (Paris) by architect Lewis P. Hobart of San Francisco. This home, now the headquarters for the American Red Cross, San Gabriel-Pomona Valley Chapter, ha s been chosen as the 2010 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The Cravens Estate is a refined three-story, 50 room residence with a wealth of architectural features. It originally encompassed 16 acres, beginning at Orange Grove Boulevard and extending to S. grand Avenue. John S. and Mildred Myers Cravens built the French-style estate in the late 1920s for approximately $310,000. T he est i ma t ed squa re footage was 19,970. This estate was one of the most expensive homes built at that time. The Cravens came to Pasadena from Missouri in 1990 and were devoted to the community. John
