Norooz is Coming By Terry Miller This March, as millions of Iranians and Iranian Americans celebrate Norooz, - they may be joined by an unlikely group: the United States Congress. H.Res.267, the Norooz Resolution, was unanimously approved January 27, 2010 by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. For the first time ever, Congress is now poised to officially recognize Norooz and the rich cultural traditions of Iranian Americans that go with along with it. Continued on Page 4

A resolution authored by Assemblymember Anthony J. Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) and Assemblymember Cameron Smyth (R-Santa Clarita), was adopted by the California State Assembly on
Thursday. Assembly Concurrent Resolution 112 designates the first week of March as “Cuss Free Week” and invites all Californians to take the “No Cussing Challenge” to “improve our relationships, set a tone of
harmony and connectedness in our communities, and inspire ourselves to higher endeavors,” according to the language of the resolution. Following its passage in the assembly, ACR 112
was transmitted to the Senate where, if it would have been immediately passed into law, it would have taken effect this week. When the Senate approves it, California will be the first state to

Winter Olympics Educate Clifton Students By Susan Motander Jack O’Connell, the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction came to Clifton Middle School in Monrovia last week. His purpose was to introduce the students and their teacher, Kyle McClure, to a new lesson plan from the Silicon Valley Education Foundation: the Science of the Olympic Winter Games. O’Connell started his remarks by thanking the students at Clifton, a California Distinguished School saying, “Do well on your tests and I take credit for it in Sacramento.” He then introduced members of the
SVE Foundation team which put together the lesson plans being presented. Working with NBC, the foundation created the plans focussing on the science, math and physics of becoming and competing as an Olympic athlete. To that end an Olympian, short track racer, Maria Garcia, also came to Clifton to meet the students and discuss her experiences in training and competing in the Olympic Games in 2006. Garcia said. “it takes years and years of intense training to prepare.” Her races lasted between 45 seconds and 4 minutes, but that

Dorothy's Place
‘Tis a Bit Incongruous By Dorothy Denne (While searching for that older column about the rats and the Cadillac last week, I found some others of the same vintage that I think bear repeating. I hope you will indulge me for a couple of weeks. The editor said he will.) With the temporary return of warmer temperatures a couple of weeks ago, afternoons found me hanging out in my airconditioned haunts. I was sitting in one when the guy next to me complained, “It is colder then Hell in here. Why don't they turn the #^&* thermostat up?” Now, my first thought was that the twit had lost his mind. The main reason a lot of us were in there was to get cool. Then what he had said hit me a different way. He said, “...colder than Hell.” I would hope it was colder than Hell. One of
the reasons I sometimes resist temptaions and instead follow the straight and narrow is because I don't want to burn in Hell. I've been taught that it is very hot there. I bet even our temperatures in the 90s and 100s are colder than Hell. I still thought he was a twit to desire a warmer temperature, but now I was obsessed with the idea that his statement was totally incongruous. I'm a little twitty myself, so I often get intrigued by that kind of thought. Makes for a chuckle now and them. Why do schools teach good nutrition in their classes then serve “fastfoods” in their cafeterias? Speaking of nutrition, or the lack of it, why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a diet coke? And, why do we sell hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight?
Isn't it kind of incongruous to have handicap parking places in front of a skating rink? Strange, too, that banks have open doors and open teller windows but the pens are chained to the counters. Think about this: why do people leave cars worth thousands of dollars sitting in the driveway and leave useless things and junk in boxes in the garage? Most confusing to me, why do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place? ‘tis a bit incongruous.

Snap-Shopping By Wally Hage It’s a new word that my “Click Chick” spouse is using for her recently created business adventure. You may remember that for her last birthday she just had to have a new iPhone. Well, because of it, she has now become a Photo Shopping Entrepreneur. Not long ago she decided to go to a very expensive Doll Convention in Chicago. Since none of her doll club members would go because of the extreme costs, she preceded to go it alone. Armed with her new iPhone and a list of names, phone numbers and detailed notes of each of her club members doll interests and collections she was now ready to start “Snap-Shopping” at the convention! As she per used each vender’s table she began clicking pictures of specific dolls... and quickly sending photos of the beautiful dolls a nd a Twitter message describing the bargains to the buying prospects in her doll club. Needless
to say her “Entrepreneurial Expertise” was a sales bonanza. Her Shop-SnapShip buying concept had everyone in her club buying furiously and her handling charge commissions were quite substantial. Now, puffed-up with t h is sa les success a nd confidence she began to branch-out into another ent repreneur ia l adventure. She has now set up a new Internet business venture called “Domain Dames”. She has inspired her excited club members to think up new Internet Domain Names to attract Internet shoppers to her services. Using that same Shop- Snap- Ship format my “Electronic Shop-aholic” is certain that she will attract many varied Internet hobbyist’s to use her ser vices instead of them personally attending Hobby Shows and Conventions. S i nce her Dom a i n Dames Group has already reg ist ered t he doma i n names of “Click-Chicks”, “Snap Shoppers”, “IPhonePurchasers”, and “Fone-Fanatic’s” she is certain that
this new travel shopping adventure will succeed. One evening as I arrived home after a very tiring day of golf, I asked my iPhone partner and “Photo Queen” “Wel l, Honey what’s for dinner”? Quickly she browsed the pantry shelves and with her iPhone sent me a “Quick Pic” photo message. “Take your pick from the pantry shelf Sweetheart”, she twittered, “Here are your soup choices for dinner tonight, as I will be away, meeting with the Domain Girls! Well, just as my “Photo Chick” was about to leave for her “Photo Chicken Coup” I told her about the new name that I have for her Domain Girls Group that they should seriously consider as being applicable in the near future!! . . .“Domain Divorcees”.

Learning to be respectful to one another is essential in our society. For that reason, I greatly applaud the efforts of the student from South Pasadena to raise awareness about the bad habit of cussing. However, with the growing economic crisis in California, it is critical to prioritize. Facing massive unemployment, increasing taxation, endless def icit s, a nd a credit rate comparable to Libya’s, there is absolutely no time nor place for wasting taxpayers’ money and valuable time entertaining bills that do not offer real solutions to the problems of our state. With a clear demonstration of self-serving interests and priorities out of place, State Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, representative of the 44th District, co-authored the “Cuss-free week” measure to score political points. Had State Assemblyman Portantino taken the time to show genuine concern for the problems of the state, he also would have noticed the environment of uncertainty about the future that small business owners and workers feel and face. However, this should not come as a surprise. His record supporting legislation in favor of more taxation for Californian families and against the business community speaks for itself. I bel ieve ou r st ate needs strong leadership in Sacramento; leaders who are willing to concentrate their efforts to develop strategies that address the main issues affecting California. Our leg islature needs to focus more on measures that promote job creation and rescue our state from the brink of bankruptcy and less on self-serving politics. If we really want to give a voice to our students, we need to begin by offering them a better future in the state with real possibilities for success.

Pasadena Symphony Supporter Edith Roberts Dies at 91 By Bill Peters This is not an obituary notice. This is a personal note to the friends and family of Edith M. Roberts and supporters of the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra who will long remember the dear and loving woman who passed away a week ago at age 91. The Pasadena Symphony and many other organizations will miss her lovely demeanor and her easy ability to make friends and, humbly, raise funds. I met Edith when I served on the Board of the Pasadena Symphony Association. It was the mid1980’s when the Symphony announced publically that it was on the brink of bankruptcy. Daniel Lewis announced his departure as conductor. The folding of the symphony orchestra was more than hinted at, it seemed certain. John D. Tarr, Robert Ziegler and others who had a long history as supporters of the orchestra reached out to all segments of the community to assist in bolstering the financial woes of the or-
ganization and to provide a solid base for the new conductor the group hired, Jorge Mester. A new and fiery board—many of whom are still serving the interests of the Pasadena Symphony Association— came into being with a youthful zest and flamboyance not usually associated with the arts in Pasadena. Edith Roberts was among the “new” board members.
If my memory serves correctly, Edith had been a successful businesswoman, though I don’t remember the field. In any event, she had the smooth technique and knowldge of how to engage people in the positive aspects that the community would derive by breathing new life into the Pasadena Symphony. With her easy smile and vivacious temperament, resistance would melt away before her.
Edith’s technique was to be kindly and persuasive. Ma ny i n t he f u ndraising field say only a donor can be successful in seeking donations from others. If that is true, Edith a nd her husba nd Jack set the path to successful fund-raising through their personal generosity. As a couple, Jack and Edith were contributors to many arts and other programs in the San Gabriel Valley and very generous to Caltech, where Dr. Roberts served as Chairman of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Dean of the Faculty and Professor Emeritus. The Roberts’ donated their Altadena home to fund the Edith M. Roberts and John D. Roberts Endowment for Undergraduate Research in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Caltech. The Roberts’ generosity continues. Jack indicates that a contribution in Edith’s memory to the Pasadena Symphony Edith Roberts Endowment Fund would be an appropriate gesture. Edith would insist on it—politely.
Fourth Annual Iranian New Year Celebration Coming March 11 Continued from the First Page Cong ressman Mike Honda (D-CA) introduced the Norooz Resolution last spring, stating “Norooz embodies the principle that each individual’s thinking, speaking, and conduct should always be virtuous. It promotes compassion for our fellow human beings irrespective of ethnicity or religion.” When the news broke that Congress was considering moving forward with the Norooz Resolution, NIAC issued a call to Iranian Americans to write to their Representatives to tell them to immediately bring the resolution up for a Committee vote. NIAC members immediately responded, sending out nearly 1,000 letters in just 5 days and spurring the Committee to take up and pass the resolution. H.Res.267 celebrates Norooz and wishes Iranian Americans and the Iranian people a prosperous new year. The resolution recognizes Iran’s rich cul-

tural traditions while expressing appreciation to Iranian Americans for their contributions to society. With the Norooz Resolution closer than ever to passing Congress, the Iranian American community may have a new achievement to celebrate as they begin the New Year. The colorful history of Iran will be fêted at the annual celebration of Norooz March 11 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 150 North Madison Av-
enue in Pasadena. Put on each year by local chiropractor Dr. Nazee Rofagha, Norooz celebrates not only the Iranian New Year but the rich culture and diversity of Iran’s peoples. There will be traditional dancing, customary foods and lectures from Dr. Jennifer Rose from Colombia University, who is a Historian with a particular interest in Ancient Iranian Studies ( Zoroastrian )
A Zoroastrian is an adherent to Zoroastrianism, the first monotheistic religion, that is based on the teachings and philosophies of Zoroaster. Since the Muslim conquest of Persia, Zoroastrianism has become increasingly marginalized, and by the 9th century Iran had become predominantly Islamic. During the 10th century onwards several groups of Zoroastrians immigrated to Western India, where they
became known as the Parsis. Today, Zoroastrianism has its stronghold in India, but Zoroastrianism still survives in Iran proper (where Zoroastrians are now a constitutionally-protected minority). There is also a Zoroastrian Diaspora, the largest groups of which are in North America and in the countries of the British Commonwealth. Although Zoroastrianism was once widespread through many of the Iranic peoples, Zoroastrians generally live as scattered minorities in Iran and India today. Tradit ional Iranian music will be provided at Norooz by the Mehr Ensemble and the dances will be performed by Djanbazian Dance Company. The honorable Mayor Bill Bogaard will be one of the special guests attending the celebration. Cameron's Seafood Swims to the Head of the Class By Victor Buell Cameron’s Seafood’s big red fish-shaped sign has been an icon in Pasadena since the doors first opened in 1984. Then proprietor John Cameron ran the place for only two years before the current owner and general manager Pete Gallanis took over. For 24 of its 26 year history, Gallanis has made Cameron’s the place to go if you want great seafood in Pasadena. Can you tell we liked it? Well we did. Before we talk food, let me mention the service. Of course everyone knew we were there to review the place, so you’d ex pect t hem t o be on their toes. But that aside, we were very impressed with the casual confident way our server and her supporting cast handled everything. The staff is attentive, prepared, professional, courteous, and appropriately playful. We were left alone to eat, but never felt neglected or forgotten. We sampled several options, including 3 chowders, 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 desserts. Fi rst cou rse, Cla m Chowder 3 ways: New England, Manhattan, and for a new twist, the two mixed together. Each was thick and filled with clams (my pet peeve about some chowders is t here just aren’t enough clams!) I grew up in New England— which makes me kind of a chowder snob—and was very happy. The Manhattan was nice and tangy, and the blended style was sur pr isingly successf ul (snob that I am I didn’t expect to like it.) Then we dove into

appetizers: Maryland Style Dungeness Crab Cakes with Pesto Aoli topped the list, with Garlic Shrimp and Sea Scallops a close second (both are available as entrées). We also like the Pan-Fried Calamari which was a different presentation, and mixed with mild banana peppers added a nice touch of acidity. The crab cakes were perfect, almost 100% crabmeat and no filler, and the pesto aoli was flavorful without overpowering the crab. Entrees! Cedar Plank Wild Salmon with Raspberry Puree, and Petrale Sole with Lemon Picatta, one with nicely balanced Garlic Mashed Potatoes, the other with Au Gratin. (We learned btw, that there is no such thing as “Wild Atlantic Salmon.” Anyone claiming
to serve it must have caught it personally.) The salmon was terrific, just smoky enough thanks to the cedar plank, moist and perfectly medium-rare. I could have lived without the raspberry puree—nothing wrong with it, but I would prefer something more savory. (A friend recently raved about the puree—so it’s a personal taste thing.) The sole was a big fillet that managed to stay hot for a good long time after being served. Great flavor, and the picatta was a nice touch. Chef Luis Diaz (who spent several years with Ruth’s Chris and before that McCormick and Schmick’s) can really cook. You can count on fresh fish at Cameron’s unless otherwise described. Owner and GM Gallanis makes certain of that.
Tasting Event Raises Relay for Life Funds Relay for Life of Monrovia had a fun and eventful hummus making and tasting event on Sat. Feb 27th hosted by Chicken King Express restaurant. Despite pouring rains and unpredictable weather, the event was well attended by many including Monrovia council members Tom Adams and Joe Garcia, as well as Monrovia Firemen, Relay committee members, friends and families. Chicken King Express chef Joe gave 5 hummus making demo sessions for all to learn how to make authentic Mediterranean hummus. Everyone enjoyed tasting with pita chips, as well as the falafel, and a wonderful baklava was served to all as complimentary dessert. Those who came also ate lunch at the restaurant, as the owner, Armen Kahouati, donated a portion of lunch sales to support Relay for Life of Monrovia. The restaurant also donated
finger chicken wraps for cancer survivor’s special event Survivor’s Celebration Tea which was organized by Relay For Life of Monrovia. The Relay for Life committee provided information to the public about cancer research, programs for cancer patients and their families, and community education supported by American Cancer Society. Relay for Life of Monrovia event is scheduled for June 5th and 6th in the Monrovia Library Park. Planning is well under way and all are requested to be a part of this life changing event. Next Relay for Life meeting is on Tuesday, March 2nd at 6:30pm at the Monrovia community center and open to anyone who wants to join the fight against cancer. For more information, call Mike Laban (event chair) at 626-627-5230 626-6275230 or visit www.RelayForLife.org/MonroviaCA

Today’s mega schools are missing the feeling of comfort and safety found in an atmosphere where “everybody knows your na me”. I g ues s we a l l crave that feeling whether it is your school, office, church, or even your favorite bar or pub. I have gotten so many cooking tips from the wonderful ladies and gents in our school’s lunchroom. The lovely lady that shared her secret for the best salmon ever has retired now. I think the economy has “retired” salmon from our menu as well! Recent ly I went i n the back to see if I could c a p t u r e t he s e c r e t of chicken that melts in your mouth. How do t hey do it for hundreds of kids and teachers and it is never dry? I found out and I want to share it, but you will be surprised how ridiculously simple it is. You’ll Need: - Chicken breasts - Lemon juice - Salt and pepper - Water
Directions:
Wash chicken breasts and place in a roasting pan. Sprinkle with lemon juice, salt and pepper. Fill roasting pan halfway up chicken
breasts with water. Bake on 500 degrees until browned; then turn and do the same on the other side. Take the breasts out of the pan and proceed to make your gravy with a bit of flour or cornstarch added to the juice and drippings. Place the chicken breast back in the gravy and cook on 250 degrees until done. Judge your timing by the size of the chicken pieces you use. When you serve this piece of chicken, you may not even need knives because your fork should melt right through. No stereo-typed lunchroom ladies for us. The kids also know that sneaking in for seconds of chocolate cake will never work because on our campus, everybody knows everybody. What a great place for working and most importantly learning!

Whether you’re starting a small business, obtaining life insurance, or sending kids to 9 March 4your - March 10, 2010 college, I can help you plan for your financial goals through personal, customized financial planning.
Operation School Bell Celebrates 40 Years of Service to Children Continued from the First Page Operation School Bell provides new clothing, including a warm jacket, a hooded sweatshirt, underwear, shirts, pants, shoes, backpacks, hygiene kits, and books to disadvantaged school children. During the past year, Operation School Bell clothed more than 1,200 children in cities across the San Gabriel Valley including Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Temple City, Alhambra, and Rosemead. Children are pre-identified through arrangements made with local schools and counselors. The mission of the program is to provide schoolchildren in need with new clothes, school supplies and hygiene kits with the goal of helping them feel not only better about themselves – but also to help these children stay in school. Studies have shown that children who attend school inappropriately dressed are at a disadvantage and that appropriate school clothing can improve school attendance and help classroom performance. By providing proper clothing and learning materials, Operation School Bell helps children arrive in the classroom better prepared to learn. These benefits of the program are readily evident,
yet more profound and immeasurable is the bolstered foundation of pride and selfesteem that stays with the child beyond the classroom. Not surprisingly, schoolteachers and counselors see an immediate difference in the emotional state of the children assisted by Operation School Bell. As expressed by Susan Dahle, Operation School Bell Chairman, “At Operation School Bell we believe that every child deserves a chance to attend school with the appropriate clothing, shoes, and supplies. But our feelings about this program are probably best expressed by one of our young “customers” who was overheard, as she was leaving with her new clothes, exclaiming, “This place--I love it!” Assistance League was established in the late 1890’s to provide services in individual communities through philanthropic programs. One hundred years later, the organization has over 122 chapters in 27 states providing much needed services to the communities they serve. Assistance League volunteers are vital contributors to their individual communities and have developed over 750 philanthropic programs that annually serve nearly 1,500,000 children, seniors, families and others in need.
Locally, Assistance League of Arcadia provided services last year to more than 13,500 children, senior citizens, and students of all ages through our programs. The Hospital Services Program distributes magazines for hospital waiting rooms and patients. Senior Programs provide retired seniors and visually impaired the opportunity to gather and socialize. Their “Kids on the Block” program educates elementary students with puppet shows about smoking, bullying, disabilities, and childhood obesity; and the Layette Program provides infant clothing and supplies for new mothers in need. Serving the community since 1954, Assistance League of Arcadia returned over $148,000 to Arcadia and the surrounding communities last year. Programs are funded through donations and the operation of The Bargain Box, a thrift shop located at 64 East Live Oak Avenue, Arcadia, CA. The members of Assistance League of Arcadia put caring and commitment into action and are always looking for more, strong, dedicated volunteers to join their ranks and make a difference in the community. Real Estate Notes
“If You Don’t Buy a House Now, You’re Stupid or Broke” By Dawn Rickabaugh This was the title of an article that ran in Business Week a few weeks back. Sounds harsh, but it got your attention, didn’t it? He said: “What I'm trying to impress upon everyone is that if you are planning on being a homeowner now and/or in the foreseeable future . . . then pay more attention to the interest rates than the price of the home. If you have a steady job, good credit, and the down payment, then you really are being offered the gift of a lifetime.” He has a point . . . if interest rates rise even slightly, it will greatly increase the cost of owning a home, and Dawn Rickabaugh is a RE Broker, Owner Financing Coach and Note Buyer. Reach her at (626) 292.1875 or www. notequeen.com. Always consult with your CPA, tax attorney and/or financial advisor before selling property or paper.
REO properties are being snatched up quickly with multiple offers in some areas, leading many to be sure that we are at the bottom. But are we? How much more inventory can the market absorb, especially if interest rates start wiggling? Foreclosures aren’t a thing of the past, and banks have been holding back, trying not to flood and drown whole neighborhoods. I recently read that before the end of this year, 10% of homes across the nation will be ‘underwater.’ Even jumbo housing loans are going bad . . . delinquencies are up to 9.6%. A high end Realtor friend of mine in Palm Springs confirmed that things are really bad out there. Apparently, even the Mortgage Bankers Association is officially WAY underwater on its Washington headquarters. Not only did the group buy at the peak of the bubble, but borrowed a lot to do it. Of the $79 million they paid, all but $5 million was financed.
I smell a ‘strategic default’ brewing . . . oh, don’t worry, it’s not unethical for large corporations. If you’re big business or government, walking away from obligations you can’t pay is simply a sound financial decision. For you and I, it’s proof that we lack moral fiber. At the end of the day, real estate has to be priced so that regular people can really afford them without extreme
financial manipulations, and in general, consumers are in a funk . . . they have more debt, less income, fewer jobs, and less access to credit. There’s no doubt that opportunities are out there. In some areas, investment properties actually cash flow with a 10-20% down payment! Amazing! But I still have this uneasy feeling that there are some sideswipes coming
down the pipeline that no one is really talking about. It may be a great time to buy, but make sure you aren’t stretching to do it, and that you’ll be able to make your house payment even if your income temporarily decreases for a few months. And for heaven’s sake, don’t get a variable interest rate! Regardless of what happens with prices and interest rates, there will always be
opportunities with seller financed properties. Many investors I know are picking up properties by offering prices that sellers can easily swallow (even in today’s market where unrealistic sellers abound), but they’re getting killer terms . . . how does 0% interest sound? It’s just that nifty little dance between property and paper.

Woman’s Clubhouse was the scene of their Valentine Fashion Show on February 6th. Sierra Madre Civic Club Goes for the Gold on 66th Birthday Gold dominated the evening of February 11th when Sierra Madre Civic Club celebrated the golden years of its 66th birthday. This was carried out in the decorations and even in clothing and jewelry worn by those who attended. President A my Put na m g reeted members and guests. She thanked Chair Taylor Nestlerode and her committee for planning the festive evening and the delicious refreshments. Special honor was paid to 21 past presidents who attended. They are among the club’s great golden treasures, plus 21 Honorary Life Members. Also honored were charter members Anne Tyler and Marjorie Peterson (of
Mama Pete nursery school fame). They reminisced about the club’s forming in 1944, the activities and watching the group grow. Charter President Althea Butler was not present. A very special person who attended was Honorary Life Member Arlie Hohn. She recently celebrated her golden 95th years young birthday. Still active with the group, she conducts Friday morning classes for those who create handmade items for one of the club’s fund-raisers, The Civic Club Shoppe. Civic Club has been recognized a number of times over the years for its outstanding community service and generous philanthropy giving.
Arcadia AAUW to Hear Nonfiction Reviewer Speak
The talented Lani Ridley Pedrini, founder of Theaters of Vision Productions, will bring a new toe-tapping musical to Ambassador Auditorium April 24th.
New Musical to Capture the Magic of Harry Warren’s Toe-Tapping Tunes At last, a stage musical is spotlighting the toe-tapping tunes of Harry Warren, who just so happened to pen the classic love song, At Last, made famous by Etta James. That’s the conclusion Lani Ridley Pedrini came to when she was assembling a show titled Music is Magic about a year ago. That musical became Harry Who?, set to take the stage of Pasadena’s historic Ambassador Auditorium for two performances, on April 24 at 2 and 8 p.m. “A friend who was working with me found Home in Pasadena by Harry Warren, and it’s not every day that you find a composer who wrote about Pasadena,” Pedrini recalled. “Then we started researching Pasadena history and found some interesting events, some known and some were real surprises, that took place in the ‘30s and ‘40s, so we’re including those as a backdrop for Harry Who? In fact, Home in Pasadena will be the opening number of this mu-
sical tribute to the composer, his time and the great city of Pasadena. Wit h more t ha n 8 0 0 publ ished songs and several Academy Awards, Warren’s hits are legendary – Serenade in Blue, I Found a Million Dollar Baby, Don’t Give Up the Ship, Stanley Steamer, 42nd Street, Shuff le Off to Buffalo, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, We’re in the Money, Jeepers Creepers, Chattanooga Choo Choo, For a Buck and a Quarter a Day, I Only Have Eyes for You, and many more. All were written for 115 classic films produced by Paramount, MGM, Fox, and Warner Bros. This is the second musical Pedrini has produced at the Ambassador Auditorium following the success of last April’s highly acclaimed The Wizard of Oz. Tickets, now on sale, are $17 to $40; discounts available for seniors, children and groups. Call (800) 595-4849 or visit www.harrywho.org.
What’s new in the world of nonfiction novels? What current nonfiction is a prize winner? The Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women and their guests will have the answers to these questions when nonfiction reviewer Dorothy Roberts speaks to the group on Monday, March 8. The Arcadia Branch meets at the Church of the Good Shepherd’s Jordan Hall, 400 W. Duarte Rd. (SW corner of Duarte Rd. and Holly Ave.), Arcadia. The evening begins with networking and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. with the program to follow at 7:00 p.m. Reviewer Dorothy Roberts is known for her deep insight into the nonfiction
she reviews, as well as for her humor and wit. She has given oral book reviews to organizations and book clubs throughout the area. Her audiences appreciate the vignettes and stories she weaves into her subject matter. Ms. Roberts is also a member of a law firm. This interesting program is open to the public at no charge. Ample parking is available in the church parking lot. Becky Bryant recently hosted a lovely luncheon at her home for her Curves Friends. This is a group that started several years ago. The catalyst for getting new friends together was Sandy Olsson (now of Oregon) and Denise Murphy. The only criteria seemed to be meeting at Curves, Live Oak, and enjoying going out for lunch. This has become a wonderful group of friends who would have never met otherwise.

Following Anthem Blue Cross’s declaration in an Assembly Health Committee hearing that the insurance company might raise premiums more frequently than the traditional once-yearly increases, Assembly member Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles) announced Assembly Bill 2042, legislation that would prohibit health insurers from raising rates more than once per year. Feuer announced the bill after the Assembly Health Committee held an oversight hearing examining the proposed rate increases of several health insurers. Earlier this year, Anthem informed its individual plan members not covered by employer-based or group policies that their monthly premiums would increase by as much as 39 percent on March 1, 2010. The company later agreed to hold off on the rate hike, which could affect as many as 800,000 individual policyholders in California, until May 1, 2010. Since the first of the year, several other health insurers have raised their subscribers’ premium rates in the 30 to 40 percent range. “California families need health reform at both the state and federal level, including
