By Terry Miller Sierra Madre Police Capt. Larry Giannone confirmed that well-know local Sierra Madre resident Bob Matheson, 66, was in custody in Canada on child pornography charges. Matheson was arrested by Border Services at the Halifax, Nova Scotia airport October 17.

A Sierra Madre detective has been assigned to follow the case to see the implications once Matheson is released and likely deported to the US: i.e. what in fact his status would be.

Temple City resident Mark Munoz, 15, is in the process of earning his Eagle Scout Rank. For his Eagle Service Project his goal is to help the community of Temple City in cleaning up his city after the recent colossal windstorm on December 1 which caused widespread damage.

Some would call it innocent. Some would call it ignorant. Some would call it stupid. I call it wonderful.

I searched the midnight sky looking for Santa Claus beyond the age that many modern kids are searching the internet for porn movies. I learned very early about Baby Jesus AND about Santa Claus.

God had Baby Jesus born on Christmas Day to teach us how to be good little girls and boys. Then his spirit (the Holy Ghost) was around us all the time to help us. Once a year, at Christmas time, God sent Santa down from the North Pole to see if we were listening carefully to what God and Baby Jesus were telling us. Simple? Yeah, but it worked. It made a good little girl out of me -- most

He shows up at dozens of Christmas parties, all at the same time. One minute he is fat and jolly. The next he is skinny and scrawny and his beard has turned to cotton. What's a kid to believe?

Who's the real one?

How long can kids hang on to innocence? Once they've learned to count, they've lost it.

Baby Jesus is politically incorrect and Santa is a fake.

Me? I still believe in Baby Jesus. As for Santa Claus, call me innocent, ignorant or stupid, I still believe in him too. I'd like to believe the real one is spending December Saturdays sitting on the courthouse esplanade in Zanesville, Ohio.

Save my candy cane, Santa. I'm trying to listen.

We lived on a farm in my early years. We had no TV or internet. In fact we had no electricity. Our radio was powered by a big battery about the size of an automobile battery.

I listened for reports from the North Pole. I didn't realize how far away the kids who lived on the other side of the world really were. Southern Ohio was my whole world. It was perfectly possible to believe that Santa cold make the entire trip in a few hours.

There was only one Santa Claus. He came to Zanesville on Saturdays in December and sat by the big Christmas tree on the courthouse esplanade.

He must have come really early because he always arrived before the kids who came from all over to talk with him. We bundled up in boots, snow pants, heavy jackets, mufflers and mittens and stood in line in the snow. It was worth it.

Film Review By Michael James Gonzalez If you liked 1987’s “Adventures in Babysitting,” then you may like Jonah Hill’s new film “The Sitter,” that is, if you can imagine a 21st Century version full of drugreferences, slapstick comedy, and disgusting humor. Hill plays Noah, the most unlikely babysitter on the planet, who relents to scoring cocaine in New York City for his trophy girlfriend after accepting to babysit three precocious children who will make his life a living hell. Directed by David Gordon Green, who has become the go-to dude for raunchy comedy after the hit

“Pineapple Express,” the film is at once an overtly crass farce that may offend some adults that actually fall into its target audience—especially if you’re a parent—yet there is enough charm, sweetness, and comedic value here that merits giving the more grossout humor a pass. Despite the movie’s rougher edges, Hill remains likeable as the live-at-home, chubby loser with a heart of gold. The young actors who play the three kids being babysat—if babysitting includes a visit to a coke dealer, robbery, and setting off explosions

throughout New York City— give strong performances as well, each displaying their own little, off-kilter personalities. “The Sitter” as a whole, however, is neither as funny nor as interesting as the kind of Chris Columbus or John Hughes comedies of the 80s that it aspires to be. Its choppy plot fails to be sufficiently coherent, the characters are underdeveloped, and the genre mashing of feel-good story/toilet humor comedy make Green’s direction seem more indecisive than innovative.

By Bill Dunn Well it was very nice to see that the San Gabriel Valley got a little press during the last couple of weeks.

As they say, “any press is good press”.

Here in Los Angeles County this area is primarily ignored by most of the news outlets unless it pertains to something horrific or a major league political scandal. To be honest, the last political brouhaha we had here, Temple City’s bribery dust up, was hardly a blip on the radar.

That was until early in the morning of Thursday the 6th of December.

The weathermen on the news had given us a brief warning. We were going to be getting some fairly strong winds, but their warning didn’t come with the usual relish and apoca-

lyptic doom that usually accompany reports pertaining to any change in our weather.

So I was a little concerned as I heard the escalating gusts outside my window around midnight. The wind chimes were working extra hard and suddenly I started hearing some of the potted plants leaving their perches on the walls.

This was not the usual Santa Ana winds that I was used to hearing this time of year. It was time to put down the patio umbrella before it started doing a Mary Poppins impersonation. Once outside, my suspicions were confirmed.

After my task was complete I made a hasty return to my bed. Hopefully I would awake to a couple of barrels full of leaves and that would be the end of it.

Boy was I wrong.

At approximately 1:36 a.m., my wife and I were awakened once again by the winds and as soon as our eyes opened all signs of light went out. There was nothing to do but set the cell phone as an alarm clock for work in the morning and hope for the best.

When we got up later that Thursday the power was still off and it was as though we had landed in Oz. When I opened my

front door the pile of leaves and cypress tree droppings created a leafy version of a snow drift. While I viewed this at that moment as disastrous, I had no idea the level of the destruction I was in for beginning with the Gingko tree in my backyard which split and blew over due to the force of the winds. Fortunately it fell in my yard and neither one of my neighbors’ yards.

Once on my way to Glendale the fallen trees and vast amounts of debris that littered the streets made my journey more like a ride at Disneyland than a morning commute.

My usual route through the side streets of northern San Gabriel and east Pasadena was blocked at every turn by huge fallen trees and branches that were bigger than my car.

The biggest shock came at the corner of San Gabriel & Colorado Boulevards with the sight of the crushed Shell gas station.

Obviously the surrealism of this vision wasn’t lost on me alone. The corner was surrounded by TV news vans and appeared on the front pages of newspapers the following day. The image became the symbolic poster child for this event.

As anybody who lives in this area will tell you the

next week would be trying on everyone’s patience.

We would wake every morning to a symphony of chain saws and refrigerators of spoiling food. Those of us who were lucky had our power back in a few days, others it took a week.

Many were calling for the heads of their city councils and local Edison/Water & Power officials with equal venom. While there were death threats made to Water & Power workers on the street by octogenarians in Pasadena, things were looking even uglier here in the City of Temple. In a town that many still refer to as Mayberry, the villagers were sharpening their pitchforks and getting ready to storm the castle, I mean city hall.

Then, as if by magic, the balance shifted back to the majority having power instead of the other way around. People who had abandoned their homes so they could access their Facebook accounts at nearby hotels, returned. The pitchforks were put back into their outlines on the walls of the garages and the refrigerators were restocked.

Life was good again in the land of Andy, Opie, and Aunt Bee.

There are champions in the faith that can lift your spirits, help you overcome your problems and give you a fresh new beginning in your life! These three gentlemen in the faith can just do that! Our country looks to heroes and we have them in this trio of overcomers and achievers.

Currently we have seen news reports about Dr. Billy Graham conquering pneumonia. Dr. Graham has written over 30 books.

Many can be found on Amazon.com as well as at most bookstores in your community. As I grew up in Minneapolis Dr. Graham was a leading figure. I went to one of his crusades as a teenager and was inspired to change my life for the better. Are you going through some life’s challenges? This is a good time to pick up one of Dr. Graham’s books. Most of his writing is from the Bible.

A very remarkable individual that I had a chance to meet was Louis Zamperini.

His life story is in the bestseller “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand currently in the top ten best sellers for the 53rd week. This man overcame such ordeals in his life that would have broken most of us. He conquered being a prisoner of war, an airplane crash, 47 days in the ocean, and more. He ran in the 1936 Olympics for the United States and had a personal audience with Adolf Hitler. He received Christ in a Billy Graham crusade in Los Angeles in 1947. Currently he is on a nationwide tour talking to countless groups of admirers of his faith, tenacity, and iron will. You can find his book on Amazon.com.

The third man of faith and character is my long time friend John Naber, Olympic champion in 1976 where he won 4 gold medals and one silver in swimming.

John is an outstanding motivational speaker and will be working as a reporter for ABC TV covering this year’s Rose Parade. John

and I have worked together on fitness routines that helped him in his running, racquetball, rebounding, weight training and overall fitness. His wonderful book “Awaken the Olympian Within” can be found on Amazon.com.

What can we learn from these three men of faith? These men looked to God and Christ to provide protection, guidance, direction, and courage to face life’s challenges. $40,000 Structure Fire in Arcadia On Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at 7:49 a.m.

Arcadia Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 200 block of East Haven Avenue in the City of Arcadia. Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, and Monrovia Fire Department Engine 101 and Truck 101 responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters witnessed heavy smoke showing from the attic of

a single-story single-family dwelling. Fire crews immediately began suppression operations, accomplishing knockdown within ten minutes of arrival. The fire was confined to the area of origin.

The tenants of the involved structure were not at home at the time of the incident; however, the property owner was contacted and responded to the scene. Also on scene were representatives from

Arcadia Police Department, Southern California Edison, The Gas Company and Animal Control.

Three animals were found expired in the home, having succumbed to smoke inhalation.

The fire appears to be accidental in nature and remains under investigation at this time. Total loss is estimated to be approximately $40,000. No persons were injured during this incident.

The most exciting Bowl Game of the season takes place tomorrow evening, December 16 starting at 5 p.m. on ESPN2. Don’t worry about the calendar, this is not the Rose Bowl or the BSC championship or even the Super Bowl. This is the Biggie, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the Division III Championship Game from Salem, Virginia. This is the way a championship game should be played.

Division III football allows no athletic scholarships, in fact most of the schools involved have stadiums so small, they don’t even have lights. The students are truly scholar athletes who play for the love of the game, not the money they will make in professional ball down the road somewhere. Therefore, it is some of the best football to be seen all year.

The last 6 Stagg Bowls have featured Mount Union (winning in 2005, 2006, and 2008) against WisconsinWhitewater (winning in 2007, 2009, and 2010), as will the 2011 Stagg Bowl on December 16, 2011. This is the longest running championship rivalry in all NCAA sports.

No other sport has had more

head to head battles pitting the same two teams for the National Championship on any level in any sport. This is a true down to the bone rivalry. And the scores over the years show it. Usually the difference between winner and loser is 10 points or less.

This year, both team go into the game having won three of the last six championships.

This is a game well worth watching. These players are in the game for the love of it and the pride of their schools.

But who was Amos Alonzo Stagg? Ever hear of the onside kick, the tackling dummy, the Statue of Liberty play? What would football be without hip pads or padded goalposts (other than less safe)? Stagg invented them all. And Cal’s would never have had THE PLAY against Stanford years ago without Stagg. He came up with the lateral pass.

Stagg was a player and a coach when football was in its infancy. He was an active coach longer than any other in the history of the sport.

His career spanned over seven decades. Born in 1862, he played end at Yale when football was little more than

a strange form of English Rugby with a oddly shaped ball. He also played baseball for Yale leading them to 5 conference championships.

He coached not just football, but basketball and baseball as well as track and field. He was even an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic track and field teams in the twenties and thirties.

Stagg started coaching professionally in 1890 at Williston Seminary, a secondary school. He was also a volunteer coach at the local college. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame as both an player and a coach, the first person to earn that honor. He completed his coaching career on September 16, 1960, when he announced his resignation from his position at Stockton Junior College as an advisory coach. He was 98. Stagg died in his sleep in a Stockton nursing home on March 17, 1965 at age 102.

So watch a bit of history and a good game tomorrow evening.

Dr. Matthew Lin drew a large group of supporters as he officially launched his campaign for California’s 49th Assembly District at the Garfield Medical Center, where he first began his medical practice more than 30 years ago.

Off to a strong start, Dr. Lin’s campaign begins with endorsements throughout the 49th District. In addition to support from Sheriff Lee Baca and Supervisor Michael Antonovich; Dr. Lin has already secured backing from a bi-partisan group of City Councilmembers and School Boardmembers from throughout the District.

“Dr. Matthew Lin has the business experience and common sense that is so sorely needed in Sacramento,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich.

“Dr. Lin is a great physician, taking care of his patients for the last 33 years.

Now, California has a problem, and Dr. Lin is the man of my choice to take care of the problems for us,” said Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca.

Dr. Lin, a recognized expert in orthopaedic sur-

gery, has practiced medicine in the San Gabriel Valley for more than 33 years. He previously has served as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at Garfield Medical Center.

He is a popular twiceelected former San Marino City Councilman. On three different occasions, Lin was also selected by his colleagues to serve as the city’s Mayor.

Dr. Lin also is a successful businessman, currently serving as Vice-Chairman of AHMC Healthcare Inc. – a healthcare provider that

serves the San Gabriel Valley.

For years, Dr. Lin has dedicated his time and resources to giving back to his community. He has long supported the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, his local church, and his local library.

Arcadia Woman's Club Christmas Luncheon a Jolly Affair The historic clubhouse looked like a sparkling jewel on December 7, boasting 10 lighted trees, small and large, throughout, with eight additional tiny lighted trees, one on each table made by Phyllis Bird and her committee. The pre-Christmas luncheon reception included champagne, wine and egg nog.

A traditional Christmas ham luncheon was served.

The musical program from the First Avenue Middle School was enjoyed. The choir is a part of a comprehensive music program that includes two symphonic bands, drumline, two symphony orchestras, concert choir, and two rock bands. Over 500 of the 800 students participate in music. Their director,

Michael Danielson is now in his 25th year as music director at First Avenue.

He has twice been selected for Profiles in Excellence

by The Arcadia Unified School District and in 2010 won the National Education Association’s Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence for the State of California.

Closing the festivities, President Barbara Lampman, with past President Shirley Heimbruch, led the members in several holiday favorites in a community sing.

Members of the club will again furnish Christmas dinner for seniors in need. They also collected and contributed food for Arcadia’s White Christmas.

Festive music for the holidays was on the program when the Brighter Side Singers of Temple City H.S. performed at a meeting of the Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Woman (AAUW). Under the leadership of wellknown director Matt Byers, this popular choral group has performed throughout the United States, in Canada, and in several European countries. For this occasion, the singers appeared in Victorian attire to add to the holiday cheer that they bring their audience.

The Arcadia Branch of AAUW invited the public to come enjoy the Brighter Side Singers’ pro-

Sierra Madre Woman's Club Hosts Community Prayer Breakfast The Sierra Madre Woman’s Club began the holiday season by inviting the community to their annual Inter-Faith Prayer Breakfast, held November 16, at the Essick House, their historic clubhouse at 550 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.

President Rosemary Morabito warmly greeted the capacity crowd that at-

tended. Phyllis Chapman introduced a number of community leaders and volunteers who contribute to making Sierra Madre a special place. Dorothy Murphy chaired the event with table decorations by Lillias Eubanks. Club members prepare and serve a delicious sit-down breakfast and there is never a charge.

Spiritual nourishment was provided by the following clergymen who attended and provided brief messages of praise and thanksgiving: Rev. George Crisp, Rev. Richard Anderson, Father Patrick Brennan, Rabbi Alan Lachtman, Very Rev. Michael Bamberger, and Judge Dorothy Nelson of the Baha’I Faith.

Brett Perkins and Friends in Concert January 29 at Sierra Madre Playhouse Brett Perkins, a singer/ songwriter whose brand of pop/folk has won him an international following, will perform in concert for one night only at Sierra Madre Playhouse on Sunday, January 29, 2012, 7:30 p.m.

Appearing on the same bill will be musical guests, which include some of the finest singer-songwriters from Southern California.

Perkins began his musical career over 20 years ago, and was lead vocalist for The Sneaks as well as a featured dancer on Soul Train before

settling into a solo career as a singer-songwriter. At one point, in the 90s, he was CEO of The National Academy of Songwriters. Over the years, he’s worked with legendary musical figures like Burt Bacharach, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills and Jackson Browne.

Formerly from Southern California, Perkins has for several years made his home in Copenhagen, where he presents the annual Copenhagen Songwriters Festival.

He performs internationally.

De’Shawn Ramirez #3, who was not part of 2010 championship team, had three powerful touchdowns and 134 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown in the diminishing minutes. Monrovia Quarterback Blake Heyworth completed 9 of 15 passes for 102 yards, including a 20 yard touchdown pass to Ramirez. Byrant Mason kicked a 35 yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Andy Guerrero, San Gabriel’s quarterback gave the Wildcats frenzy from the beginning. Monrovia’s two outstanding defensive linemen, Ellis McCarthy and George Frazier V meted out devastation on Alex Villalobos, which took him out of the game and the rest was history. Guerrero was held to 19 yards rushing on 10 carries and he completed 18 of 31 passes for 204 yards and two touch downs. Villalobos caught 22- and 15- yard touchdown passes in the second quarter.

When the game ended, the players relished in their moment of victory. They gave thanks to the coaching staff, parents, and the support of the fans. The underlying thread was dedicated

to the community and the great coaching staff that taught them how similar the game of football is to life.

The team dedicated the football season to offensive lineman Yohan DeSilva. A special thank you to Team CrossFit Academy of Monrovia for the eight weeks of Football Specific Training Program during 2010 and 2011. Coach Ryan Maddox and the coaching staff have changed the face of Monrovia’s Football with two back to back CIF -SS Mid Valley Division Championship and Blue chip talent on the team.

Monrovia started off 1-3 as some people doubted the team, but the team persevered and stuck to the game plan that led them to a repeat CIF Championship title once again.

In the wake of the recent wind disaster that caused major damage throughout the San Gabriel Valley, Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) has proposed legislation to improve emergency and disaster preparedness by California’s public utilities.

The proposed bill calls on each utility to report with every county in its service area every two years for the purpose of reviewing, updating and improving their emergency disaster and preparedness plans.

“We just saw firsthand that our public utilities can do a better job. Clearly, they were not prepared for a disaster of this magnitude. We need to use the recent wind disaster to improve our readiness and better prepare for future

disasters such as a large earthquake. Having a review every two years will force better coordination, better service and better public safety.” commented Portantino.

The proposed bill asks counties to inform cities within their jurisdiction about each meeting so that cities and the public can provide input into emergency planning. The legislation also calls on the California Public Utilities Commission to use its regulatory authority to set preparedness standards; for example, the use of weather reports to preposition manpower and equipment before a storm and methods of improving communication between government agencies and the public.

“We learned some

things from this calamity that will forever change the way we look at these disasters,” added Portantino.

The Board of Supervisors approved an amendment to the County’s state legislative agenda by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich to support an extension of Laura’s Law scheduled to sunset January 1, 2013.

Laura’s Law is a proactive, compassionate program providing medical treatment for the County’s mentally ill.

“It is vital that this lifesaving program be extended to help the mentally ill recover and live productive lives,” said Antonovich.

Laura’s Law reformed the Lanterman-Petris-Short Law, which prohibited judges, families, and physicians from compelling the severely mentally ill to accept treatment.

A pilot program initiated

by Antonovich in Los Angeles County has successfully stabilized and reintegrated participants back into the community with a 78% reduction in incarcerations and a 77% reduction in hospitalizations. These reductions cut the costs to the community and taxpayers by almost 40% and significantly improved the lives of program participants.

Laura’s Law is patterned after New York State’s Kendra’s Law, has shown tremendous success after just five years. Data conclusively demonstrates that assisted outpatient treatment significantly reduces severe consequences for participants: 74% fewer people experienced homelessness

Monday evening Dec 12 , the family was returning to their home on the 11000 block of Kristi Court, in Arcadia when they were surprised by an armed light-skinned Hispanic male who had apparently been waiting for the family to return.

As the family entered the garage of the residence, the man confronted the family, pointed a hand gun at them and demanded money.

Fearing for their safety, the victims gave the gunman the only money they had in their possession, their rent money.

Determined they had more money inside the house, the gunman demanded entry and ordered the family into their residence. Once inside the residence, the gunman directed the mother and her two sons, ages 3 and 5 and 6yr old daughter into a bedroom.

The victims were instructed to shut the door and

not to exit the room. The gunman then gave the father more commands for cash and shortly thereafter, several gunshots were heard by the family. They exited the room and found the male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect left the residence prior to the family finding the victim.

The suspect was described as a 30 - 35 year old, light-skinned Hispanic man.

On Tuesday morning workers from Emergency Response Crime Scene Cleanup were seen entering the Garage of the home in Arcadia and spoke with a male inside the home who was the presumtive lanlord of the home but no one spoke with the mass of media at the scene attempting to get more information.

One neigbor who prefered to remain anoymous said she had never seen the children at the house and

thet the family kept to themselves where most everuone on Kristi Court knew one another.

Detectives’ are seeking the public’s assistance in solving this crime. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

Coldwell Banker Agents Annual Rescue Mission Trip Slated On Monday December 19th, Dean Griffith and a group of real estate agents from Coldwell Banker’s Arcadia Regional Office will make their annual holiday trip to the Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission. Dean and his fellow agents are collecting clothes, blankets, toys, and any cash or checks that you would like to donate to the Mission. Last year they collected 5 truckloads of clothing & blankets and ap-

proximately $2000 in donations for the mission.

The annual “Trip to the Mission” was started 24 years ago by Bruce Pfeiffer, an agent in Coldwell Banker’s Arcadia Regional Office.

After 20 years of leading the trip to the mission, Bruce handed over his duties to Dean. The Union Rescue Mission’s efforts are focused on reducing homelessness throughout LA County and specifically Skid Row. Cur-

rently, Los Angeles County has 3% of the nation’s total population, but 10% of its homeless population.

Windstorm Debris Returned as Free Mulch The recent hurricaneforce windstorm that rocked Pasadena has finally yielded one benefit: free mulch for gardens.

Green debris taken by residents to two drop-off points has been ground up and will be returned to those locations starting this week as free mulch available to any Pasadenan with a shovel and something with which to carry the mulch.

Mulch will be available daily from Dec. 16 to 29, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Eaton Blanche Park, 3100 E. Del

Mar Blvd., in the parking lot on Millicent Way; and Robinson Park, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave., in the parking lot on Morton Street.

Mulch is an important organic protective cover placed over soil to help retain moisture, return nutrients, discourage weed growth and encourage seed germination and healthy plant growth.

To prevent contamination of mulch, residents are reminded that yard waste must never contain any nongreen items such as mattresses, fence material, roof

shingles or other debris.

In addition to a great deal of free mulch, the unprecedented amount of storm debris has led to an increase in illegal dumping on streets, in parks and public rights of way. Pasadena Police are on the lookout for illegal dumping and will issue citations.

For the period of Sunday, December 4, through Saturday, December 10, the Police Department responded to 967 calls for service of which 117 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, December 4: At about 6:59 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 200 block of West Foothill Boulevard in regards to a female victim in distress.

While walking through her residence, the victim noticed the front door was open and attempted to close it when an unknown suspect walked up behind her and pushed the door closed. The suspect, described as a male adult with light or medium complexion, short dark hair, wearing a black long sleeve shirt and black bandana over his face, took money from the victim’s wallet and bedroom. The suspect pushed the victim into a bedroom closet and eventually fled undetected.

Through investigation, the officer determined the suspect forced entry into the home by breaking a glass window pane.

At approximately 4:57 p.m., an officer responded to H&M at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in reference to a juvenile detained for theft.

The suspect was observed damaging a pair of jeans by attempting to remove the security sensor. The suspect then removed the security sensor from a sweater, put it on, and left the store without making payment. The 16-year-old Hispanic male was cited and released to his mother.

Monday, December 5: Shortly after 8:15 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 1900 block of South Seventh Avenue, in regards to a vehicle burglary report. The victim discovered the rear passenger side window of his car had been smashed, which he left parked in his driveway overnight. Numerous items were reported stolen.

Around 12:34 p.m., an officer responded to Express at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in reference to

a grand theft report. The store manager explained that on December 4th, between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., unknown suspect(s) stole sixty-one men’s shirts from the front display inside the store. The store was overcrowded and no one saw the theft.

Tuesday, December 6: At about 10:47 a.m., an officer responded to the 1200 block of South Golden West Avenue regarding a fire assist. Dispatch advised a large amount of smoke was seen coming from an apartment building. Arcadia Fire Department Engine 105 responded to the scene and made forced entry into an apartment filled with smoke. An investigation revealed the smoke was caused by burnt food.

The tenants forgot they were cooking and left the location.

At some point in time between December 2nd and December 5th, unknown suspect(s) stole a laptop computer from a home in the 100 block of East La Porte Street while the resident was away. Through investigation, the officer determined the point of entry was through an unlocked bedroom window.

A dust for latent prints proved negative and no other property was reported missing.

Wednesday, December 7: At about 5:26 p.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Method Hospital, 300 West Huntington Drive, regarding a hit and run.

While the victim was stopped in the parking lot, a vehicle reversed into her front driver side door causing minor damage.

The victim explained to the driver that she needed to get to the emergency room. The driver told the victim that she was a nurse at the hospital and would wait for her in the emergency room to exchange information; however the driver never showed up.

AMH checked the hospital directory and was unable to locate a nurse matching the name provided by the driver. The victim recorded the vehicle’s license plate at the time of the incident and provided it to the officer. A follow-up investigation is being conducted on the registered owner of the vehicle.

Around 7:54 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter in regards to an identity theft report.

The victim explained that his wife attempted to use their credit card at a gas station but the transaction was denied. The victim called his credit union and discovered their shared checking account was overdrawn due to several unauthorized charges. Both victims were in possession of their credit cards at the time of the report and have no idea how their information was compromised.

Thursday, December 8: Shortly after 8:00 p.m., an officer responded to Sephora at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding two juveniles de-

Friday, December 9: At about 6:17 a.m., officers responded to the area of Tyler Avenue and Live Oak Avenue regarding a traffic collision. The reporting party explained to officers that she saw a male adult flee from his vehicle carrying a 12-pack of beer after he drove it into the west curb of Tyler Avenue.

Officers located the suspect nearby on Freer Street and determined he was under the influence. The 28-year-old Hispanic male was arrested for Hit and Run, DUI, BAL greater

tained for theft. The loss prevention officer advised he saw the juveniles each conceal a men’s fragrance inside their purse, and walk out of the store without making payment. Both juveniles, a16-year-old White female and 17-year-old Asian female, were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. They were later released to their parents.

At approximately 2:34 p.m., an officer responded to Murietta Drive and Volante Road regarding a suspicious parked vehicle.

The officer approached the vehicle and discovered three occupants inside smoking marijuana.

Through investigation, the officer determined the 19year White male driver was in possession of a medical marijuana license and furnished marijuana to his friends, of which one was a juvenile. The driver

Around 2:30 p.m., an officer was traveling along Huntington Drive at Baldwin Avenue and conducted a traffic stop for expired registration. Through investigation, the officer learned the driver was operating the vehicle with a suspended license. The 27-year-old Black male was arrested for the listed charges and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

Saturday, December 10: Shortly after 3:20 a.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle for lane swerving on Huntington Drive at Colorado Place. Upon contact, the officer noticed an odor of alcohol emitting from the driver’s breath. Through investigation, the officer determined the 30-year-old Hispanic female was driving under the influence, and placed her under arrest for DUI and BAL greater than 0.08%. The passenger, a 33-year-old Hispanic female, was also arrested for a valid misdemeanor warrant.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Mall security office, 400 South

Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a theft report.

While the victim was eating in the food court, she placed her child’s diaper bag on top of her stroller, and noticed it missing a short time later. The diaper bag contained the victim’s wallet and she did not see anyone suspicious near her seating area.

During the last seven-day period, December 1-7, the Police Department handled 858 service events, resulting in 91 investigations.

Monrovia’s Emergency Operations Center Activated On December 1 at 4:24 a.m., the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for the City of Monrovia was activated due to the amount of damage created by windstorms. All available personnel were assigned to specific tasks to meet the demands on the calls for service regarding power outages, downed power lines and downed trees. The windstorms began the night before at approximately 11 p.m.; calls reporting property damage began after midnight.

The Police Department received more than 500 calls for service in a 24-hour period. The calls ranged from residents trapped due to downed trees or power lines, preventing them from leaving their residences, to broken water lines. The appropriate departments were notified through the EOC. The entire day was spent answering calls for service due to the wind related incidents.

While there were more than 500 calls for service, only two involved criminal investigations. The calls for service did not let up until after 9 p.m. The EOC was scaled down after midnight.

Attempt Residential Burglary On December 1 at 8:36 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of West Colorado reported an attempted burglary. Suspect(s) tampered with the deadbolt on the

detached garage and cut the lock off a toolbox on a nearby trailer. The incident occurred sometime between 2:45 and 6:30 a.m.

No suspects were seen or heard. Investigation continuing.

Commercial Burglary / Forgery On December 1 at 5:31 p.m., the owner of a business in the 400 block of West Foothill called to report that a female suspect had entered her business on November 19 and purchased several items using a check from a closed account. The female was identified through computer checks. The investigation is continuing.

Petty Theft On December 2 at 1:26 p.m., a resident in the 500 block of Falling Leaf called to report someone had stolen his laptop from his unlocked vehicle, which was parked in front of his residence during the night. No suspect(s) seen or heard.

Investigation continuing.

Commercial Burglary / Runaway Juvenile On December 2 at 3:46 p.m., a business in the 500 block of West Huntington called to report two female juveniles who had walked into the business, selected merchandise, and stole several items from the location. The juveniles fled the location when approached by the loss prevention officer. They had dropped their purses as they were trying to get away. One of the juveniles eventually came back to the location and turned herself in to police. A computer check revealed she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. The juvenile was taken into custody. The subject was found to be a ward of the court and was later released to a worker from the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS). As the female and the DCFS worker exited the police department, the female ran southbound on Ivy and out of sight. Officers responded and conducted a search, but she was not located. A missing person’s report was completed for the runaway.

Vehicle Burglary On December 2 at 6:54 p.m., a female resident in the 1000 block of Royal Oaks parked her vehicle in

The female was inside for about an hour, and when she returned, she discovered the passenger window had been smashed and her purse was taken.

No suspect(s) were seen or heard. Investigation continuing.

Vehicle Burglary On December 2 at 8:37 p.m., a female subject called to report a vehicle burglary that occurred in the 1300 block of South Magnolia. She parked and locked her vehicle in a carport of an apartment complex. When she returned to her vehicle, she discovered her rear window smashed and her computer case and accessories missing.

A citizen recovered some of the victim’s property in the roadway at Canyon and Chestnut. The citizen called police and turned in the victim’s property. The crime occurred sometime between 6:40 and 8:30 p.m. Investigation continuing.

Traffic Collision / Driving Under the Influence - Suspect Arrested On December 4 at 3:20 a.m., a vehicle collided with two parked vehicles in the 800 block of West Foothill. Officers responded and determined the driver to be driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested.

Grand Theft Auto On December 5 at 7:13 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of West Walnut regarding a stolen vehicle. The victim stated that she had picked up her daughter and her daughter’s friend at the El Monte Bus Depot the day before.

She drove them to her residence and parked the vehicle on the street. The victim went to sleep at 9 p.m., and when she woke up the next morning around 6 a.m., the daughter and her friend were gone. She went outside and saw her car was missing. She checked her purse and found the keys to the vehicle, her cell phone, and $100 were missing. She did not give the daughter permission to take her car. The vehicle is a gold, four-door, 1996 Ford Taurus. Investigation

continuing.

Attempt Residential Burglary On December 5 at 10:16 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of South Canyon called police to report an attempted burglary. The crime occurred sometime between noon and 10 p.m.

The front door of the residence was forced open, but nothing was taken. Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft Auto Recovery On December 5 at 9:49 p.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from a business parking lot in the 500 block of West Huntington. The stolen vehicle was a white, four-door, 1994 Honda Accord. At approximately midnight, the Monrovia Police Department was notified by the California Highway Patrol that the vehicle was found abandoned on the 60 Freeway at Rosemead Boulevard.

Investigation continuing.

Possession of Narcotics - Suspect Arrested On December 7 at 12:57 a.m., an officer stopped a bicyclist at Mayflower and Colorado for a traffic violation. During a consent search, the officer found a small baggie of cocaine.

The suspect was arrested for possession of narcotics.

Theft from a Vehicle On December 7 at 7:47 a.m., a theft from a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of West Lime. The victim reported that someone went into his vehicle during the night and took his GPS System. The vehicle doors had been left unlocked.

Investigation continuing.

Theft from a Vehicle On December 7 at 8:51 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 200 block of West Lime regarding a theft from a vehicle. The victim reported that someone went into his vehicle, which was parked in an alley, and took his car stereo.

The vehicle doors were left unlocked.

Investigation continuing.

Residential Burglary On December 7 at 1:34 p.m., an officer responded to the 700 block of Norumbega Drive regarding a burglary. The victim has been ill and was home asleep. Suspect(s) broke a bedroom window, gained entry, and stole jewelry

from the room. The victim did not hear the glass breaking. He woke when he heard his bedroom door open and the lights went on and off quickly.

He did not see the person and thought it was the cleaning lady. Investigation continuing.

Vehicle Burglary On December 7 at 3:52 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 700 block of South Myrtle at an apartment complex. The victim reported that his locked vehicle had been broken into sometime on Saturday, December 3.

His GPS System, iPod, and some coins were taken. Investigation continuing.

Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested On December 7 at 4:02 p.m., a female victim of domestic violence called to report an incident that occurred in the 900 block of Diamond. The female victim reported that she had been battered by her live-in boyfriend, who is the father of her child.

He struck her in the head several times with a closed fist and left the location on foot. The officer learned the suspect might be on his way to Pasadena. The Pasadena Police Department was notified of the incident and within the hour Pasadena called to advise they were detaining the suspect.

The officer responded to Pasadena and arrested the suspect.

Theft from a Vehicle On December 7 at 8:42 p.m., a theft from an unlocked vehicle was reported in the 200 block of West Lemon. The crime occurred between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. A laptop computer and a ring were stolen from the vehicle. Investigation continuing.

Fight / Warrant Arrest / Delaying a Peace Officer / Child Annoying / Drunk in Public - Suspects Arrested On December 7 at 9:51 p.m., an officer was flagged down by a citizen reporting a possible fight in the 100 block of West Foothill.

As the officer approached a group of subjects, including two male subjects that looked as if they were preparing to fight, one of the subjects ran away. The officer recognized the re-

maining subject and knew he had an outstanding arrest warrant. The subject was uncooperative and challenged the officer, who then requested assistance.

Assisting officers arrived and the suspect continued to resist, but was eventually taken into custody. No one was injured. At 10:36 p.m., while officers were attempting to locate witnesses to the fight, a 15-year-old girl told officers that the subject who ran from the incident had approached her and had made several lewd comments. That suspect was located nearby and was positively identified by witnesses. The second suspect is an 18-year-old male.

He was arrested for child annoying and being drunk in public.

Fight in Progress - Suspects Arrested On December 7 at 11:56 p.m., police received a call reporting a fight in progress at Myrtle and Pomona. Officers arrived and found two female subjects who witnesses said had been fighting prior to police arrival. The two subjects were arrested for being drunk in public.

The subjects were part of the group from the above listed fight incident that occurred in the 100 block of Foothill.

Detective Bureau Case Follow-Ups Search Warrant - On December 6, detectives went to Anaheim to serve a search warrant for a stolen laptop computer. The computer was stolen from a vehicle at Homestead Village. The laptop was equipped with a tracking device. The tracking service was able to produce the Facebook page for a possible suspect and an address associated with the IP address. The detectives recovered the computer.

The investigation to identify the suspect continues.

Search Warrant - On December 7, detectives went to Winnetka to serve a search warrant on a counterfeit suspect. The search warrant allowed the detectives to search for additional counterfeit bills.

The detectives did not find any more counterfeit bills, but they did seize a usable amount of methamphetamine.

Sierra Madre PD

During the week of Sunday, December 4th, to Saturday December 10th, the Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 269 calls for service. See crimereports. com for updated information.

Sunday, December 4th: 1:29 AM- Unlawful Display Evidence of Registration, 100 blk. Esperanza Ave. An officer stopped a 40-year old Sierra Madre motorist for a Vehicle Code violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had false registration tabs on the vehicle.

The driver was cited and released on the scene.

3:40 PM- Warrant/Outside/ Criminal, Lima Ave and Montecito Ave.A resident called police after seeing what she believed to be two solicitors in the area of Lima and Carter. A responding officer saw the two men get into a van, and stopped it. Both men were on parole for carjacking, and residential burglary, respectively. Officers arrested one of the men for a no-bail burglary warrant.

8:11 PM- Danger to Self/ Others/Gravely Disabled, 1900 blk. Liliano Dr. This case involves a man being placed on a 72-hour hold for a psychiatric evaluation.

Monday, December 5th: 11:28 PM- False ID to Peace Officer, 400 blk. Sierra Madre Blvd. Officers arrested anintoxicated 18year old woman who gave police a false name. Police took her to the Pasadena Police Department Jail for booking.

Tuesday, December 6th: 6:38 AM- Use Another’s Personal Identification to Obtain Credit/Etc. This case involves an unknown suspect that used the victim’s credit information to open a credit card account without the victim’s permission.

1:32 PM- Possession Marijuana/1 oz or Less, Carter Ave and Lima St.An officer stopped a26-year old Pasadena motorist for a Vehicle Code violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver was under possession of marijuana. The Pasadena motorist was cited and released on scene.

Wednesday, December 7th:

9:54 AM- Use Another’s Personal Identification to Obtain Credit/Etc, 200 blk.

W. Montecito Ave. This case involves an unknown suspect(s) that used the victim’s credit information to open a Chase Bank account without the victim’s permission.

Thursday, December 8th: 11:57 PM- DUI Alcohol/ Drugs, Windsor Lane and Montecito Ave. An officer stopped a 54-year old Sierra Madre motorist for a Vehicle Code violation and found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, and driving with a suspended driver’s license. The man also had a $35,000 warrant. The driver was arrested and transported to Pasadena Police Department for booking.

Friday, December 9th: 4:53 PM- Business License Required, 200 blk. Windwood Ln. This case involves a suspicious person soliciting without a business license. The 25-year old man was issued an administrative citation.

Saturday, December 10th: 2:22 AM- Drive while Suspended for DUI, Foothill Blvd and Baldwin Ave.An officer stopped a 22-year old Pasadena motorist for a Vehicle Code violation, and learned that the driver had a suspended/revoked driver’s license. The officer released the driver on a citation and impounded the car.

2:22 AM- Possession of Controlled Substance, Foothill Blvd. and Baldwin Ave. An officer stopped a 22-year old Pasadena motorist for a Vehicle Code violation.Officers found that the passenger was in possession of less than 1 oz of marijuana and marijuana cookies without a medical card. The officer also found a glass smoking pipe with methamphetamine. The passenger was arrested and transported to Pasadena Police Department jail for booking.

2:22 AM- Warrant/Outside/Traffic, Foothill Blvd and Baldwin Ave. An officer stopped a 22-year old Pasadena motorist for a Vehicle Code violation, and arrested his passenger for a $55,000.00 traffic warrant.

Hal McClintock , 91 Hal McClintock , 91, of Pasadena passed away rather suddenly on Saturday December 10 from complications following a fall at home. With paralysis of the legs and a complicated fracture in the neck it was deemed inoperable at his age, according to surgeons.

Hal McClintock has lived with love of his life, Bernice Miller of Pasadena, since 1992.

Bernice and Hal first met at a bereavement group after they both lost their respective spouses one year earlier. For the next 19 .5 years, Hal and Bernice were inseparable. Moving in together and forming a new relationship that many of their friends said simply was just “meant to be.”

The outgoing couple attended many community events in Sierra Madre and Arcadia as well as Pasadena with friends they made at the Support Group. They formed a splinter group they lovingly called the “Corrupt

Group” with some of the other people with whom they had forged a very unique and rare bond.

One of their favorite outings was the annual Sierra Madre Fourth of July Cel-

ebration. The group had the same prime location at the beginning of the parade and became part of the party..

Hal’s professional life saw him as an avid photojournalist and wedding photographer. He also worked as an engineer for the Railroads and the famous Red Car of years gone by.

Over the years Hal documented his love of trains with an exceptional passion and was working on compiling a selection of his locomotive images for possible publication prior to his death.

Hal McClintock’s other passions in life, aside from his number one…

Bernice, included golf , his wonderful Chihuahua “BEEJ”, online poker ( not for real money, of course ) and, of course anything connected with photography which sometimes included photographing beautiful models.

Politically savvy, McClintock became increasing frustrated with the Republican led Congress and its inability or refusal to work with President Obama.

His outgoing personality and love of life will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing Hal. There will be an Irish Wake celebrating his life in February.

Matheson was sentenced in a Canadian court to 108 days for possessing and smuggling child pornography across an international border, according to reports for a Novia Scotia newspaper.

Robert William Matheson, 66, of Sierra Madre pleaded guilty Tuesday in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia Provincial Court to possessing and smuggling child pornography. Immediately admitting guilt brought a slightly lesser sentence, according to Crown Court officials.

A search of Matheson’s laptop turned up 2,500 photographs and 280 video clips of teenage boys either standing naked or engaged in sex acts with other boys.

According to the Chronicle Herald, a local paper in that area, the computer also contained written stories about sexual activities between a 10-year-old boy and his uncles, grandfather and father, and between the boy and other men such as priests and schoolteachers.

Matheson, who owns a home in Pictou, Canada, was subjected to a secondary search by border officers at Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Oct. 17.

According to Chris Hansen, Director of Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service, Matheson was under house arrest when he was released on his own recognizance Oct 26 after agreeing to multiple restrictions including remain-

ing in his Pictou cottage from 10pm to 7am and numerous restrictions including no access to internet, revocation of passport and not to be anywhere near a public park or school where children may be located.

He agreed to return to court for sentencing Tuesday December 13. From the original 3 charges, he was convicted of possession of child pornography and of smuggling under the Customs Act. The stories found on Matheson’s computer “were disturbing because they went a great deal beyond the line of … describing sexual relations with children,” according to Provincial Crown Attorney records. “By the very nature of the descriptions, these stories appeared to advocate sex with children.”

Matheson is retired from the U.S. military and served as a radio announcer for many years overseas and at March Airforce Base. Matheson has

no previous criminal record.

“Your Honour, this is certainly a regrettable circumstance,” Matheson told Judge Flora Buchan according to the local newspaper. “While there were files on my computer, there were many of those files that I never read.

They were downloaded years ago, I forgot about them and I regret bringing them into the country.”

Matheson gave up the laptop and provided a sample of his DNA for a national databank.

Matheson may only serve one month, according to a source at the Halifax, Nova Scotia Constabulary depending on his disposition in prison.

Once released from Canadian authorities and deported to the United States, Matheson could face additional charges in the United States and faces possible arrest upon his return to US soil. He will be unable to return to Canada.
