Assemblymember Anthony Portantino joined officials from the University of California at a press conference Tuesday in Pasadena to unveil a summer fellowship program for students from Historically Black Colleges

and Universities (HBCUs).

Twenty five undergraduate students from HBCUs will be selected to participate in the program offered through the UC Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders. The two-

week fellowship will provide undergraduates with business development opportunities that will showcase MBA’s and other business graduate degrees at UC campuses.

A Pattern Developing?

By Dorothy Denne I used to take my mother-in-law and her friends to Saturday matinees. I thought that was terribly kind of me because I was the only young one in the audience.

My friends and I preferred evening performances. We would go for cocktails and a big, fancy dinner then off to the performance.

My mother-in-law and her friends are gone now.

My friends and I go to Saturday matinees. We now prefer going for cocktails and dinner after the performance instead of before. Makes it easier to see the whole performance---less dozing. Besides that, when we bloat we can go home and take our belts off.

I called a local Playhouse the other day to make reservations. The matinee shows were nearly sold out.

The young man said they

sell really fast. I commented that I guessed there are a lot of seniors in the area. He agreed but said he liked matinees himself because he is a real theater buff, yet the early performances leave him free evenings to do other things.

I don’t think he had in mind removing his belt and early to bed.

In the course of our pleasant conversation I did inform him that I’m merely a baby senior. He said, “Oh, I guess that means you’re in your mid-fifties” I told him to add a couple of decades.

I could tell he was stuttering around for the right words to cover his faux pas. I helped him out by saying, “It’s ok Honey. As long as I can move about, I’ll be a baby.”

He said, “Hey, I like your attitude.” Hanging up from him, I was off for a quick trip through the supermarket.

Have you ever noticed how old ladies tend to park their carts sideways in the middle of the aisle then wander off to look for what they want? I was about to get really ticked at one when she said, “Excuse me Young Lady, would you reach that can for me?” I was glad

I could help her and the Young Lady part sent me smiling to the check out line.

The old man, two ahead of me, left one of his bags on the counter. The about fortyish guy, right in front of me, chased him out the door and gave him the bag. When he returned he thanked me for waiting and apologized for holding me back. I said, “No problem.

That was kind of you.” I figured we had both done our good deed.

I was still feeling good about being a Young Lady helping an old one as I pushed my cart through the door. The wheel got caught in a rut. I was struggling with it. A fifty or sixtyish woman walked up and said, “Would you like some help Ma’am?” So much for the self satisfied smile.

Do I see a pattern developing here? From evenings to matinees, from supermarket speed to shopping cart difficulty, from Young Lady to Ma’am. Could that pattern possibly be developing as part of the big picture of young to old? Naah, not yet.

I can still move about.

“13% of Duarte Stores Selling Tobacco to Minors” I am a 17-year old student at Duarte High School.

Last year I participated in a Youth Tobacco Purchase Survey conducted by the Duarte Community Advocacy Coalition. We found that 3 out of 23 stores were willing to sell cigarettes to youth under 18 years old.

The clerks didn’t even ask our ages. One asked for ID, but still handed cigarettes to the girl.

This action really concerned me, and I began to talk to my friends about smoking. I helped to coordinate the Youth Advocacy Coalition, and we surveyed people of all ages to see how they felt about kids be-

ing able to buy cigarettes in Duarte.

Most people were surprised! I found out how dangerous tobacco products can be to one’s health, especially youth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the younger a person is when they start smoking, the more difficult it is to quit. Three out of 4 smokers start before they are 18. Although it has been illegal to sell tobacco to minors in CA for over 100 years, retailers continue to sell tobacco to kids!

Some youth coalition members participate in Glendale Adventist Medical Center’s Art & Advocacy

Program. We learn how the arts can be used to promote community involvement and address important issues. We designed an anti-smoking ad, which was published in the Duarte Dispatch and other San Gabriel Valley newspapers last summer. Now we are working on a large art piece that will be displayed in the community.

Over 60 jurisdictions in California have passed or are working to pass strong local tobacco retailer licensing policies to protect their kids from a lifelong addiction to tobacco. Maybe we need the same protection.

Hillside Wilderness Preservation Campaign Group and Others Plan to Occupy Monrovia City Council It has been suggested we Occupy the Monrovia City Council Meeting February 7, 2012, 7:00 PM. It is important City Council sees that there are hundreds - if not thousands - of Citizens that are concerned with City Staff’s lack of study in and during the EIR and final RMP for the Monrovia Hillside Preserve and Recreation areas.

We have many concerns about opening up several access locations to the Wilderness Preserve and the location of those access points in residential area.

Please review the information we received through the Monrovia City Clerk’s Office - Freedom of Information Act - Request for Public Records. We were surprised at not only the frequency of calls the Monrovia Police Department received for Canyon Park, but also surprised and alarmed by many of the reasons listed in this report. These included Burglary Alarm, Vandalism, Suspicious Person,Weapon Offense, Assist re fire, Unsecured Premises, Juvenile Problem, Suspicious Vehicle, Medical Assist, Alcohol Offense, Indecent Exposure, Drug Activity, Disturbed Subject, Burglary - Vehicle, Critical Missing, Warrant Arrest, Found Contraband, Extra Patrol, Traffic Colli-

sion - Injury, Theft - Bicycle, Battery - Report, Curfew, Injured Animal, Urinating/ Defecating in Public, Child Abuse Report, Animal-Bear, Animal-Snake, Traffic Offense, Vandalism - Felony, Property Damage.

These calls/responses were for one location which has only one official entrance to access only 80 acres of the Monrovia Canyon Park.

City Staff is now proposing 5 new official separate entrances at four to five significant neighborhoods (Highland Place, Cloverleaf/ Hidden Valley, Ridgeside, and two on Norumbega Drive (from the West side of Monrovia to the East side of Monrovia) for access to approximately 1,400 acres of the Monrovia Hillside Wilderness Preserve.

Based on the Planning Commission Recommendations made to City Council on or about December 13, 2011, the Planning Commission wants to promote the Hillside Wilderness Preserve through “education of the dangers inside the Preserve.”

As important, we cannot ignore comments made by the Planning Commission and prior City Council, that the Proposed Resource Management Plan (RMP) is a “Living Document.” And we cannot ignore the fact that once the Final Environ-

mental Report (EIR) is Certified/Approved by Monrovia City Council, the Planning Commission/City Council believes it can be changed anytime (for good and bad).

This information about the problems around Canyon Park should have been disclosed and studied in and during the EIR and RMP as the Park is currently the only access point for the Wilderness Preserve.

Woe to those neighborhoods and others that live in and adjacent to the Monrovia Hillsides.

We ask for your support in numbers (and voice if you choose) to argue for the City Council to request City Staff to go back to the drawing board regarding the EIR and RMP! ling back East to help with Mom’s care and it is likely that I will be needed in New Jersey to pack up her house and to help with her transition into assisted living, I won’t be available to campaign in the manner that my supporters expect and our district deserves, while still attending to my legislative responsibilities.

Ellen and I are grateful for the tremendous support that I have received during my five years in the State Legislature and the eight years prior on the La Canada Flintridge City Council.

Your ongoing support and

encouragement for me to continue serving in office is truly appreciated. I assure you that I will not be ending my public service.

My father died when I was eleven years old and my mother has been the most significant influence on my life. I need to spend as much time with her as I can as she fights to reclaim her mobility in the time she has left as the matriarch of our family.

Her deep understanding of the local culture and her fluency in the local language combined with her ability to work with people at the grassroots level, as well as the government level, has led to successful implementation of public health programs in Afghanistan all while living with the danger of suicide bombings.

She lectures regularly on women’s global health

issues at universities, national and international organizations, and professional conferences.

About the film: “Where are the Men?” “Where are the Men?” discusses the importance of involving men in family planning and reproductive health for advancement of women’s health and development, particularly in male-dominated societies like Afghanistan. The film highlights the value of understanding and considering local culture in design and implementation of developmental programs in societies that are very different than western societies.

“Where are the Men?” has won several awards and recognitions. It has claimed

Best Film, Best Narration and Best Director awards at the Los Angeles Reel Film Festival 2011 and won special recognitions at various other film festivals. This film is being shown at different universities and colleges such as University of Georgia College of Public Health, University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, University of Texas School of Nursing, and California State University Northridge where it is being used as an educational tool in Women’s Health and Development and Global Health courses.

ACLU Lawsuit Charges Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and Brass with Condoning Pattern of Deputy-on-Inmate Violence

Complaint Alleges High-Level Staff Knew Gangs of Deputies Beat Inmates and Condoned Cover-Ups The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Southern California (ACLU/ SC) and attorneys from Paul Hastings, LLP today filed a federal class action lawsuit charging Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and his top command staff with condoning a long-standing, widespread pattern of violence by deputies against inmates in the Los Angeles County Jails.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of two named plaintiffs, Alex Rosas and Jonathan Goodwin, who were savagely beaten and threatened with violence by deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (L.A.S.D.) while they were pretrial detainees in the jail. As detailed in the complaint, the treatment of Rosas and Goodwin is not isolated – there are dozens

of reports of similar brutality in the jails. The lawsuit seeks both injunctive and declaratory relief on behalf of all present and future inmates of the jails.

“Sheriff Lee Baca, Undersheriff Paul Tanaka, and Chief Dennis Burns are responsible for ensuring that their subordinates do not engage in a pattern of unspeakable acts of violence

against inmates,” said Peter Eliasberg, legal director of the ACLU/SC. “But in the face of a longstanding pattern of deputy abuse they have deliberately and knowingly failed to put in place the basic pieces of an accountability system – sound policies on the use of force, adequate training, careful investigation of force incidents and a rigorous system of discipline. This suit is directed at them because they have allowed deputies to go unpunished, covered up their behavior and for years made no effort to reform this broken system.”

Los Angeles County has the largest jail system in the nation, with an average daily population of 15,000 inmates.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, charges that Baca and his command staff had full knowledge of this pattern of violence, and sought to conceal it from the public. The suit alleges violations of the inmates’ rights under the Eighth Amend-

ment to the U.S. Constitution to be free of cruel and unusual punishment, and pretrial detainees’ rights under the Fourteenth Amendment’s prohibition of punishment prior to conviction.

“A sick culture of deputy-on-inmate hyper-violence has been flourishing for decades in the darkness of the L.A. County Jails, and this lawsuit will continue to help expose that culture to the light of day,” said Margaret Winter, associate director of the ACLU National Prison Project. “Because Sheriff Baca has recently taken an important first step -- publicly admitting there’s an enormous problem and expressing his commitment to reform -- we hope the sheriff and the ACLU will be able to reach a court-ordered injunction that will bring about profound and far-reaching changes.”

In September 2011, the ACLU issued a report documenting more than 70 recent cases of extreme deputy vio-

lence, and shortly thereafter the public learned the FBI had launched a far-reaching criminal probe into deputyon-inmate violence in the county jails. In December 2011, the county Board of Supervisors convened a commission to investigate and make recommendations.

In addition to ACLU lawyers, a team of Paul Hastings attorneys led by Donna Melby and John Durrant will provide pro bono legal assistance to the plaintiffs in this case.

“We are honored to partner with the ACLU in bringing this worthy lawsuit,” said Durrant. “What we are talking about here goes well beyond having a ‘tough’ jail.

There is a well-documented, chronic problem of brutality in the jails that must be redressed.”

Pasadena Chamber of Commerce Local Alternative Private School Board of Directors Votes to Introduces Innovative Lunch & Fitness Explore Interim NFL at Rose Bowl Program to Promote Healthy Living At its December meeting, the Board of Directors of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce voted to formally take a position in support of the Rose Bowl exploring the opportunity to host an interim professional National Football League (NFL) team for as many as four years.

“Without a deal on the table and without knowing what the financial, environmental and neighborhood impacts may be, the Chamber Board overwhelmingly supported the idea of looking at the Rose Bowl hosting an NFL team on a shortterm basis, should that opportunity arise,” said Chamber CEO Paul Little. “The Board felt very strongly that it would be a huge lost opportunity to dismiss the interim NFL team before even hearing what any deal terms may be and without understanding what impacts may result.”

To date, there has not been an NFL team announced for the Los Angeles area. Two proposals are

currently competing for the rights to bring a team to Los Angeles, one that would be located in the City of Industry and the other intended to be housed at a stadium to be built in downtown Los Angeles. Neither entity has been able to secure an agreement to re-located an NFL team to Los Angeles.

If and when that happens, it is very likely that the Los Angeles NFL team would need a temporary stadium in which to play its home games for as many as four years as their permanent home is being built.

“Right now there is no indication that an NFL team will relocate to Los Angeles anytime in the near future, though we all recognize that an announcement could come in the next few weeks or five years from now,” said Mr. Little. “The Chamber Board simply wants our Rose Bowl stadium to be able to entertain the idea of hosting an interim NFL team. The Board encourages the Rose Bowl to, at the very least, look into the

opportunity and determine if it is in the best interest of the stadium, the community and our local economy to play host to professional football for a defined period of time. If, at some point, there is a deal to be considered, the Chamber Board will likely look at the deal points and decide if the economic benefits outweigh any impacts to our community or the Arroyo Seco.”

Lucky Baldwin’s Trappiste Celebrates First Anniversary in East Pasadena Feb. 6

It has been a tough year for business across the United States. However, for Lucky Baldwin’s it has been bittersweet as the business has grown steadily but recently lost co-owner David Farnworth to ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Farnworth was nothing short of a beer guru, if you will. He knew his craft and traveled far and wide to find the preeminent beers and ales, many of which happen to be Belgian, for his customers’ somewhat discriminating palates.

Under the ownership of British subjects David Farnworth and Peggy Simonian, Lucky Baldwin’s poured their very first pint July 1, 1996 in Old Pasadena. It wasn’t long before word got around that there was a agreeable “English Pub” in Pasadena complete with character and a feel of that which one would find in the UK. Business partners Farnworth and Simonian, who met while working for the British Tourist Authority in Los Angeles, knew they were on to something and something big with Lucky Baldwins. The place

kept growing and accordingly they offered an ever increasing selection of fine wines and beers as well a menu of darn good British grub.

Farnworth approached the beer business much like a wine connoisseur, without the pompous stance so often associated with wine aficionados and sommeliers.

Farnworth had a great sense of humour, abeit a bit dry as many of us Brits, but there was no pretense.

This is the legacy he has left. Humor, knowledge and hand crafted beers you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

It is easy to see why Lucky Baldwin’s customers get into Belgian beer.

“The flavors are so different,” Farnworth told us a few months prior to his passing. “They’re fascinating. And a lot of them are high in alcohol like Alesmith old Knumbskull” - that’s actually the name of one of Farnworth’s favorite selections.

Now the hugely popular East Colorado location has completed its first year in business and by all accounts, the place is here to stay. Owner Peggy Si-

monian said she was very pleased that the neighborhood has given the pub such a warm welcome.

“We have received a fantastic welcome from the neighborhood.” Simonian told Beacon Media.

Store Manager Ben Miller has helped keep the pub running smoothly with some of the difficult transi-

tions this past year and has established a remarkably informed, friendly and fun crew of young men and women which seems to flow as smoothly as some of the most elegant ales they serve.

Friendliness, extensive knowledge of the beers as well as darn good pub food make this truly a

impressive neighborhood pub according to local resident Dave Peterson who said that “satisfying the needs of a neigborhood as well as an area “ is what Lucky Baldwin’s has done.

Like any faithful British pub, Lucky Baldwin’s offers a friendly family environment and is frequented by locals and visitors alike. A full kitchen serving breakfast, lunch and dinner makes Lucky Baldwins a perfect place to have a traditional British meal.

Boasting 65 beers on tap and countless others in the bottles, Lucky Baldwins is celebrating its third incarnation’s one year anniversary with a big party the day after Super Bowl Sunday. On Monday Feb 6 at 6pm they’ll kick off the one year soiree. There will also be a toast at 7pm.

Monrovia Mayor Lutz Accentuates the Positive in State of City Address

Monrovia Mayor Mary Ann Lutz quoted songwriter Johnny Mercer in summing up the plan for the city: “accentuate the positive.” Her State of the City address Tuesday did not, however, gloss over the negative factors to which she referred as “challenges” facing the city.

Not surprisingly, a large part of the speech dealt with the impact of the end of redevelopment. Lutz noted that in late December, the California Supreme Court ruled “the Governor and the State Legislature had the right to kill redevelopment if they wanted to,” and they had done so.

Lutz pointed out that for the last 39 years Monrovia had used its Redevelopment Agency to “create privatesector jobs and stimulate business growth. It was the process by which we created affordable housing and it’s has funded vital community programs for decades.”

She vowed that the city and especially the City Council would work throughout the upcoming year to ensure that economic development would continue in the city.

She also said that programs such as the Monrovia Area Partnership (MAP) would continue despite the fact that they had been funded by Redevelopment.

Lutz said “The Supreme Court decision was actually the second blow to hit Monrovia as last year ended. The first punch – the windstorm that hit us the night of November 30 – is a good metaphor for the jolts we took in 2011. It was unexpected and unprecedented, and it left a costly mess in its wake.”

She explained that the city was prepared and immediately worked to correct the problems and that in the same way the city would cope with the loss of the redevelopment agency: “We got things working again, shook it off, cleaned things up and got back to business.”

to find new ways to get things done. “This has always been one of Monrovia’s strong points.”

In addition to vowing to fund the MAP program the mayor also said the city was working to maintain a balanced budget. She said sales and property taxes were rising, but that with the loss of “Redevelopment dollars, we have a potential deficit of more than $1 million . She said “we’ll all be working through the spring to solve that problem.”

“The path to the future is still being determined, but when the road is finally cleared, we all know that Monrovia will lead the way forward, “ Lutz said.

She said that Monrovia had for years been known for its Redevelopment Program: “We’re the city that did it right, and the whole country knew it. Okay – now we’ll be the poster child for Economic Development. We have led the way in community reinvestment for nearly four decades. That won’t change.”

She listed all the accomplishments of the city including the Economic Development Program which was developed last year along with the new Business Resource Center and the creation of Project Coordinator position. She noted that the city has long been known as being supportive of business in the city and that this had culminated in Monrovia being named the most business friendly City in Los Angeles

County.

“Redevelopment may be gone,” she said, “but Economic Development isn’t, and, I can tell you, the County’s ‘Most Business Friendly City’ isn’t going to miss any opportunity to stimulate jobs, attract business or reinvest in ourselves this year.”

To that end, she said the city staff would be presenting an Economic Development Action plan to the City Council in February. “We’re confident that the State will eventually solve it’s problems. In the meantime, we have a job to do and we’re getting on with it.”

Lutz summed up the State of the City by turning to the words of Mercer: “In 1944 – during the height of World War II, a far worse time than this – Johnny Mercer wrote a song in which he said, “You gotta accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative and latch onto the affirmative.” It was a good idea then and it’s a good idea now.

“We have a lot of positive to accentuate and a lot of affirmative to latch onto.

Roadblocks and hurdles are just roadblocks and hurdles.

We’ll eliminate them.”

Monrovia Murder was holding a hunting style knife and confronted his wife and the victim, who is his wife’s male companion. The suspect stabbed the victim one time in the chest and fled from the location.

Monrovia Police Officers located the suspect at a nearby hotel in Monrovia and

surrounded his room. The suspect was unaware of the police presence and exited his hotel room where he was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was arrested and charged for Attempt Murder and violating a protective court order.

Memories Reflected Through Needlework” Presented by Pat and Barbara Barnes Attorney Pat Barnes exhibited his award winning needlework at Rotary 116 and told what each needlework project meant to him.

Both he and his wife, Barbara Lynn, have enjoyed the years in which they have been involved with needlework and many of their finished projects have been entered in the Los Angeles County Fair. They have both won ribbons and awards for their beautiful displays.

Pat started off his talk by saying, “I needle her too much.” Which, of course, got a laugh from our club members and guests. Pat named his talk “Twist in Memories.”

He numbered his memory and needlework in the following manner: Peacocks were the focal point. Pat moved to Arcadia in 1979. His father told him to visit the service clubs in the city, mainly Kiwanis, as his dad belonged to that club and really wanted Pat to join also. Well, Pat came to the Arcadia Rotary Club (not invited) and came for six months without anyone saying anything. The nominating committee asked Pat to accept an office for the following year and his reply was, “I am not even a mem-

ber yet.” Well, Pat had been eating free for six months and, of course, became a member, accepted the offer of being on the board and eventually was Arcadia Rotary Club President 1991-92.

So, picture #1 represented Rotary and his gift to weekly speakers, a clock, “Take Time for Rotary” and to this day, Pat says, “The clock has remained on time.” His lovely wife, Barbara Lynn was club secretary, which she remained until 2011, when she retired.

I attended the January

6th Rotary meeting to see the Barnes’ beautiful displays of needlework and hooked rugs, the rewards of their passionate hobbies.

Pat has won 12 first place, two second place, four third, one fourth and a large peacock took best of the show.

At county fairs Barbara has also won numerous awards for her hooked rugs.

It was a fascinating program and Pat is very humorous; in fact, he had his audience in stitches.

The Social Whirl What Happened to Auditorium Money?

I received a very interesting and factual six-page fax last week from a voice from the past, Joe Sargis, at one time known as Mr. Arcadia. Sargis was C.E.O. of a Huntington bank, an active Rotarian and one of the movers and shakers of a flourishing civic life in Arcadia at that time. The following is a time line of money raised for dreams back then of a performing arts auditorium and the ensuing foundation.

“Arcadia old timers probably wonder about the money that was raised for an auditorium.

It was early 1977 and Floretta Lauber was serving as Arcadia’s first woman Mayor. A performing arts void existed in Arcadia and the community envisioned building an auditorium. As usual, Charles Gilb responded to head up an effort. Randy Stoke volunteered the legal services of Latham & Watkins, and the Arcadia Auditorium Foundation was formed.

Trustees were Charles Gilb president, school board member Gloria Horstman secretary, and Joe Sargis treasurer.

Although the amounts may seem small, they were enormous in those days.

Excitement built and activities began with the Winslows hosting a dinner to raise over $400, b black tie dinner yielded over $1,400 and over $4,900 was received from individual donations.

The premier function was the Jog-A-WalkA-Thom held at the high school with money pledged for persons jogging and walking. It was an absolute carnival atmosphere extravaganza with widespread community support. The very successful event raised an incredible sum of over $58,000.

Unfortunately, as time passed, there was insufficient support for a bond issue to build an auditorium.

Up until 1993, the Foundation had earned bank interest of over $105,000. During that period, grants of over $62,000 were made to the school district in support of its music programs. That was consistent with the Foundation purpose.

In 1993, the Founda-

tion ceased to exist with the remaining funds of over $108,000 passed to the school district. One hundred thousand dollars of that amount was placed in trust and restricted for use only if an auditorium was built. All interest earned on the restricted funds continued to support district music programs.

The Foundation total administrative expense during those 16 years was a $20 filing fee. Its records have been placed with the Historical Museum.

The recent bond issue has provided funding to create a Performing Arts Center at the high school.

When it opens in the fall of 2012, the magnificent facility will greatly exceed any and all dreams of an auditorium for Arcadia. The school district plans to use the restricted $100,000 for the ending expenses of the construction.

The Foundation was another example of community participation and generosity of Arcadia old.

It provided grant support for music programs of over 30 years, and it is fitting that Foundation money will provide the ending expense of the Performing Arts Center creation.”

After reading this on a blog, Mayor Gary Kovacic answers: “To help complete the auditorium story: In 1999, the congregation of the First Church of Christ Science listed its church at 100 W. Duarte Rd. in Arcadia for sale. I organized a small group of Arcadians (George Fasching, Craig Lucas, John Murphy, Mickey Segal, and me) that tried to purchase the church. Our vision was to create a first class community performing arts center that would attract significant cultural and related events to Arcadia and provide an appropriate venue for the excellent performing arts programs produced by Arcadia’s schools and other community groups.

Preliminary plans were prepared by a local architect. The plans included increasing the seating to approximately 1,000 and adding a stage, fly loft, balcony, foyer, restrooms, and state-of-the-art acoustics,

sound and lighting. The estimated cost of the modifications and site acquisition was $5,136,223.

Our group took initial steps to form ‘The Arcadia Performing Arts Center Foundation’ and submitted an offer to the church’s governing board in the form of a detailed Memorandum of Understanding that contemplated a ‘’Lease Purchase Option Agreement.’

Alas, while our group had an abundance of energy, vision and plans, we were short on cash. The church’s governing board was impressed with our proposal, but decided to accept a better financial offer from another bidder.

The church would have provided an excellent location and improvements for the first class community performing arts center we envisioned.

Although the immediate goal of our group was not realized, the community’s interest in such a venue continued. In 2006, when I chaired the successful Measure I campaign, we again promoted a new performing arts center on the Arcadia High School campus.

Now, thanks in large part to the seeds planted by the volunteer members of the Arcadia Auditorium Foundation in 1978, our community’s vision of a performing arts center in Arcadia will soon be realized.”

Joe Sargis responds: “I read with great interest Gary Kovacic’s addition to my recent Auditorium blog. It is a matter of record that throughout the years Gary Kovacic, more than anyone, has diligently worked to create a Performing arts Center for Arcadia. His most recent efforts were reflected in the Caruso Shops at Santa Anita negotiations.

The community owes a debt of gratitude to, and should salute Gary as its son who kept the vision alive, never giving up on a Performing Arts Center.

The school district should cause his many years of efforts to be recognized at the new Performing Arts Center.

The New Police Departments Radio System Becomes Compatible With Inter-Agency Communications Interoperatbility System Media No Longer be able to Monitor Pasadena PD The Pasadena Police Department has implemented the UHF Digital Trunked APCO Project 25 Standard Radio System.

By spring 2012 the $7-million project will completely replace the city’s entire antiquated municipal radio communications system.

This will streamline radio communications among city departments and other local governments, reaching as far as San Bernardino County to the Pacific Coast.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandated the radio spectrum be available Nationwide, including Pasadena be reduced by January 1, 2013. The original decision was made, and the plan was put in place, under then Chief Bernard Melekian in 1999. By implementing the new communications infrastructure a year ahead of the deadline, Pasadena is realizing the advantages of the sys-

tem. The radio system provides additional capacity which allows city departments to co-exist on the same network. In the old system, departments other than public safety were unable to communicate effectively. Issues resulting from poor interdepartmental communications provided lower levels of effective response of services to the community.

An unintended consequence to the upgrade will make it difficult to monitor the department’s radio transmissions. “It is not our intention to reduce the level of transparency of the Pasadena Police Department’s operations. There has been absolutely no restriction made on the public or the media from filing Public Records Requests. While the transmissions made on our primary channels (frequencies 1 through 4) are the only ones that are recorded, anyone is allowed to request that data. We are

required to provide copies of requested transmissions in as timely faction, but we ask the public to understand that there are no laws that require public safety to make transmissions available in real time. Transparency is a primary mission of the City of Pasadena.

The police department has a history of responding in a timely manner to ensure transparency”, said Chief Phillip Sanchez Contrary to some reports, Southern California public safety agencies do not provide media the ability to decrypt transmissions in real time.

Chief Phillip Sanchez said, “After assessing the new system we will determine ways to ensure continued transparency to the community. It is never our intent to decrease access to the department’s voice communications. The new system provides officers a new tool as they strive to serve the public”.

Arcadia PD Conducting Sobriety and License Checkpoints The Arcadia Police Department Traffic Bureau will be conducting a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint at multiple locations within the city on Saturday, January 28. According to statistics, more deaths and injuries are caused by impaired drivers than any other violent crimes, including hand guns and knives combined.

For the period of Sunday, January 1st, through Saturday, January 7th, the Police Department responded to 748 calls for service of which 96 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, January 1: At about 2:10 a.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle for a broken headlight and lane swerving on Santa Anita Avenue at Colorado Boulevard. Upon contact with the driver, the officer detected an odor of alcohol emitting from his person.

An investigation revealed the 20-year-old Hispanic male was under the influence of alcohol, and he was arrested for DUI. At approximately 2:52 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter in regards to a fraud report. While reviewing her online statements, the victim discovered one of her checks had been altered. After the victim mailed her check, an unknown suspect(s) obtained the check and cashed it for a different amount.

Further investigation revealed a Black female suspect was arrested for check fraud by the El Monte Police Department.

A DMV check revealed this suspect lived a short distance away from the location where the victim mailed her check.

Monday, January 2: Shortly after 11:40 a.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Gardens Retirement Home, 720 West Camino Real Avenue, in regards to a possible fraud report. The victim received a telephone call from an unknown male subject who informed him that he won 13 million dollars from a sweepstakes he had entered, and needed to pay a fee in order to receive his prize money. The victim mailed

the check and never received any prizes. The suspect called a second time requesting an additional fee, at which time the victim realized it was a scam. He is desirous of prosecution.

Around 3:29 p.m., officers were dispatched to JC Penney at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to two male adults in custody for theft. The suspects concealed merchandise inside their clothing and exited the store without making payment. The 18-yearold and 19-year-old Chinese males were transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking without incident.

Tuesday, January 3: At approximately 1:42 p.m., an officer was driving north on Santa Anita Avenue at Wheeler Avenue, and observed a suspicious vehicle driving west on Wheeler Avenue. The driver saw the officer and began to drive in reverse, east toward First Avenue, in attempt to get away. The subject abandoned his car in the Denny’s parking lot, 7 East Huntington Drive, and fled on foot through multiple businesses. Assisting officers detained the suspect in the Domenico’s parking lot, 251 North Santa Anita Avenue.

An investigation revealed the subject ran from police for no apparent reason. He was released without further delay.

Sometime in the morning hours, unknown suspect(s) attempted to force entry into the master bedroom of a residence in the 000 block of East Camino Real Avenue.

When the victim returned home she observed the door frame was damaged. Officers determined the alarm was activated and the suspect(s) fled undetected. No property was reported missing.

Wednesday, January 4: Shortly after 10:00 a.m., an officer conducted a license plate look up on a black Chevrolet Tahoe as he was driving

south on Second Avenue, north of Huntington Drive.

The officer discovered the vehicle had a warrant attached and conducted a traffic stop.

An investigation revealed the warrant was valid and the driver was never issued a license. The 25-year-old Hispanic male was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At about 8:42 p.m., an officer responded to the Macy’s parking lot at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in reference to an auto burglary. After the victim returned from work, she discovered unknown suspect(s) stole her factory navigation system and third row seat. Officers did not locate any signs of forced entry and no one saw or heard anything suspicious.

Thursday, January 5: Around 11:35 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 000 block of California Street, in regards to a mail theft. The victim observed a female adult approach her front porch and walk away carrying her package that was just delivered. The suspect entered a brown 1980’s four-door sedan, which was parked in front of the victim’s house.

The victim attempted to chase after the suspect; however, the vehicle fled northbound on Second Avenue.

An area check proved negative. The suspect is described as a White female with long blonde hair, about 5’7”, 135 lbs., wearing a white or pink colored shirt with a dark sweater tied around her waist, and blue pants.

Shortly after 6:09 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Santa Anita Avenue and Las Flores Avenue, in regards to a threeparty traffic accident. A driver was traveling southbound on Santa Anita Avenue while two other parties were stopped ahead of him. The driver did not stop in time and struck the rear end of party two, who then moved forward and rear-ended party

Friday, January 6: At approximately 1:42 a.m., an officer responded to AMC Theaters at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a movie piracy report. A male adult was observed video-taping a movie with his cellular phone. The 21-year-old male of unknown race was arrested for Movie Piracy and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At about 5:27 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in reference to a sexual battery investigation. A juvenile victim was standing in the food court area, and was approached by an unknown suspect who grabbed her buttocks. The victim attempted to move away, however the suspect continued to follow her. When the victim yelled for help, she was assisted by mall security and the suspect fled in an unknown direction. An area check for the suspect met with negative results. The suspect is described as a White male adult, 20 to 30-years-old, about 5’6” tall, 300 lbs., with long straight shoulder-length brown hair, wearing a gray zip-up hooded sweater and blue jeans.

Saturday, January 7: Between 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., a theft occurred at West Coast Elite Gymnastics, 900 South Santa Anita Avenue.

When the victim went to retrieve her purse from a shelf, she discovered it was missing.

No one observed anything suspicious. The victim has no idea who may have taken her property.

Around 8:08 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Sephora at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a female juvenile detained for theft. The suspect concealed multiple items inside a used shopping bag and exited the store without making payment. Further investigation revealed the sus-

pect was in possession of burglary tools. The 17-year-old Chinese female was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Monrovia PD

During the last seven-day period, the Police Department handled 415 service events, resulting in 86 investigations.

Felony Hit and Run Traffic Collision - Suspect Arrested On January 9 at 5:42 p.m., a bicyclist was traveling west on Foothill and stopped at Violet when a dark colored SUV collided into the bicyclist. The bicyclist was ejected approximately 20 feet and the driver of the SUV fled west on Foothill. The bicyclist was treated by Monrovia Fire Department at the scene and was taken to a hospital. His external injuries appeared minor, but his internal injuries were unknown, so as a precaution, he was taken to a trauma unit.

During the investigation, Monrovia Police Department received a call from a subject who claimed to have possibly been involved in a traffic collision with another vehicle on Foothill. The caller provided a description of his vehicle, which matched the description of the hit and run vehicle.

Officers responded to the driver’s location and after further investigation, the suspect was arrested.

Shots Fired On January 13 at 10:42 p.m., residents in the area of 1100 South Primrose heard several shots fired. Officers responded and discovered four .45 caliber bullet casings in the south alley in the 200 block of West Huntington, near Magnolia. Video surveillance showed a male suspect, possibly White or Hispanic, wearing a gray hooded sweat-

shirt in the alley. The suspect fired four rounds east in the alley, then he ran west out of sight. It is unknown what he was shooting at; however, at the time of the shooting, the manager of a business saw a male Black subject, approximately 18 to 20 years old, wearing baggy clothing, dancing around in the parking lot. He then ran east toward Primrose. It’s possible he could have been the target and was attempting to avoid getting hit. No impact points or blood on the ground was located. Hospitals were notified, but no victims were reported during the night.

On January 16 at approximately 3 a.m., an officer stopped a suspicious subject.

During the contact, the subject claimed to be the victim of the shooting that occurred on January 13. The victim said he was in a business parking lot and was shot at; he was not struck or injured. The victim would not cooperate with the officer and refused to provide any additional information. The clothing the victim was wearing during his contact with the officer matched the possible victim’s clothing reported on the night of the shooting. The officer completed a supplemental report regarding his contact with the possible victim and an identification card was also completed. Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft Auto - Motorcycle On January 14 at 2:33 a.m., a resident in the 300 block of South Shamrock heard noises in his front yard and went outside to investigate.

He saw his 2005, orange and black, KTM dirt-bike motorcycle was missing off a trailer he had parked on the street in front of his house. Witnesses told him they saw a male Hispanic subject, approximately 30 years old, pushing it west on Lemon toward California.

Theft On January 14 at 10:19 a.m., officers responded to a theft report at an apartment complex in the 700 block of South Myrtle. A pickup truck parked on the first level of the parking structure behind the security gate had two duffel bags stolen out of the bed of the truck. Investigation continuing.

Embezzlement - Suspect Arrested On January 14 at 11:43 a.m., officers responded to a business in the 600 block of South Myrtle regarding an embezzlement report. The owner of the business noticed a discrepancy in the inventory and confronted the employee in charge, who admitted to embezzling property from the business. During investigation, the employee confessed to embezzling property from the business over the past five years. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Special Enforcement Team Activity Possession of Marijuana for Sales / Traffic Stop / Warrants - Suspects Arrested On January 14 at 8:46 p.m., an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 1600 block of South Myrtle.

He recognized the driver and knew she had an active want for her arrest issued by Monrovia Police Department. A search of her vehicle revealed marijuana found in different containers, and a large quantity of cash was found on her person. Her cell phone contained multiple texts from people that indicated she was selling marijuana to them.

She was arrested for the want, as well as possession of marijuana for sales and transportation. There was a passenger in the vehicle that was found to have five felony warrants, which included a no-bail probation warrant. The passenger was also arrested.

Domestic Violence / Outside Assist - Huntington Beach Police Department - Suspect Arrested On January 14, the Special Enforcement Team detained a distraught female on Myrtle and Duarte. The subject said she was upset because her twin sister had been involved in domestic violence with her husband. While talking to her, her husband and sister arrived. After further investigation, the sister was arrested for domestic violence for battering her husband. Since the incident occurred in Huntington Beach, the Huntington Beach Police Department responded and took custody of the female suspect.

Detective Bureau - Case Follow-up On November 16, 2011, at approximately 8 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 300 East Colorado regarding vandalism in progress. The officers were able to locate one adult suspect and a juvenile suspect. The suspects were arrested for tagging in the area of 300 East Colorado. The tagging is unique and there were several reports describing the particular tagging.

A follow-up investigation by a detective discovered two additional suspects tied to the original suspects. After an extensive data collection effort by the detective, the cost of cleaning up the paint and replacing the damaged glass

amounted to a felony vandalism charge. The detective was able to use the detailed preliminary investigation by the officer to secure a felony filing against all four suspects and close 25 cases. Since the case was filed, the detective has found two additional cases to add to the filing.

After both individuals were arrested, an inventory of the car uncovered numerous items of property that had been stolen from the residents in Sierra Madre and other cities. The female driver was transported to the Pasadena Police Department jail for booking and the male passenger was transported to IRC for booking.

By Jennifer Boone The massive windstorm in December felled hundreds of trees and branches in San Gabriel Valley. Monrovia, as with many other communities, generated a great deal of mulch for the the community. The palm, oak, Pine and other trees remains were turned into mulch and provided by the cities of Monrovia, Duarte, and Arcadia. The mulch was given away on Saturday, January 21 at Monrovia Recreation Park. The next free give away will be January 28, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) announced the final registration and exhibitor numbers for the 2012 NAMM Show, the largest and longest-running musical instruments and products trade show in the United States.

At show close, NAMM reported 95,709 registered attendees, a six percent increase from last year and representing a new record for the 110-year-old show.

International registration also experienced a 15 percent increase from last year to 11,981. The association previously reported strong exhibitor numbers, with 1,441 exhibitors at this year’s show, including 236 new exhibitors.

"Once again the NAMM Show served as the crossroads for musical instrument and live sound products manufacturers, retailers and their guests from all over the world,” said NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond.

"We are extremely grateful to all of the NAMM Members, music educators, artists, partners and media who made

this 110th NAMM Show a resounding success for the industry and a great start to 2012."

The annual trade show is something Beacon Media never misses. It’s the place where music products retailers meet face-to-face with manufacturers to make their biggest purchases and gain product knowledge for their stores in the year ahead.

Pasadena PD Solve Mar Vista Homicide On August 22, 2011, Marvin Laguan MH 18 was shot and killed while conversing with a friend in the 400 block of North Mar Vista Avenue. Witnesses described the suspects as two African American males male Blacks who ran southbound from the scene.

Since that date, Homicide Investigators have been pursuing several leads.

These efforts culminated in the successful identification of the suspects.

On January 18, 2012, Pasadena Police Detectives and law enforcement personnel from the United States Marshalls Fugitive Unit, California State Parole, and the Glendale Police Department arrested Scott King (male-19 and Palmdale resident) and Steven Fleming (male-19 and Pasadena resident) for

Laguan’s murder. Both suspects have gang associations and the assault is believed gang related.

There were seven homicides in the City of Pasadena during 2011. Six of those cases have been solved with prosecutions and detectives are actively investigating the most recent incident, which occurred December 27, 2011.

Since 2008 the Pasadena Police Department has a 100% homicide solvability rate.

The Los Angeles County District Attorneys’ Office filed charges of 1st degree murder on King and Fleming. Additionally, two counts of attempted murder with gang enhancements on both suspects was charged. King was charged with an additional count of Ex-Felon with a firearm.

Both suspects are schedule for arraignment today. King is being held on $4,115,000 bail and Fleming is being held on $3,040,000 bail.

“The arrest in this case is another example of the diligent work conducted by the Pasadena Police Homicide Detectives. This case was very complex and required a great deal of investigation savvy, patience and determination. I am most proud that the Pasadena Police Department has such a high solvability rate. This ensures that criminal who pose threats to the safety of this community are taken off streets” said Chief Phillip Sanchez.

“Haywire” is High on Adreniline but Low in Substance Film Review By Michael James Gonzalez Perhaps it’s cashing in before taking a much talked about hiatus from directing that Steven Soderbergh has moved into the action-adventure genre with “Haywire,” a film that has all the markings of a summer blockbuster, but after seeing it you realize why it’s in the January-release pile.

Mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano, however, is sure to gain a foothold in Hollywood casting sheets calling for an action-star, as the new-comer gives a blistering performance in

the role of Mallory Kane, a highly-trained, butt-kicking spy who is betrayed and left for dead by her own agency. Although her acting inexperience sometimes shows in the more dialogue-driven scenes, it is Carano’s on-screen charisma, good looks, and physical ability that demonstrate beyond any doubt her ability to carry a film.

To be sure, all the fun had in watching this film lies in Carano’s impressive combat skills, back flips, and sexy-yet-tough attitude reminiscent of Demi

Moore in “G.I. Jane.” But despite Carano’s best attempts, the film ends up going the way of your standard B-movie action flick, with minimal character development, a worn storyline, and underwhelming performances by its all-star cast. Soderbergh does give the film a stylish punch, with his usual, witty direction and adept handling of the fight choreography, which is captured in dazzling hyper-realism, but more is naturally to be expected from an auteur such as him.

Tim Tebow…A Winner In Life!

As the game was ending with the Denver Broncos losing to the New England Patriots some interesting thoughts came into my mind, they were “You can be a winner even if you lose.” How can I come up with such a statement? Tim Tebow, Denver Bronco’s quarterback, is playing a game larger than anything that football has to offer.

He’s looking at the big picture. This starts with God’s will for his life. Sometimes we don’t always win in everything we attempt. God is there to teach us valuable lessons. As a coach at the Olympic level, I learned this lesson. As I prayed for my Olympic athletes to break world records, gain Olympic gold medals, sometimes God did not answer my prayer.

Tim Tebow exhibits a character that I have encountered before with athletes that I have coached and trained and I have had friendships with. One example is Bob Wieland.

He bases his entire journey in life on God’s will. He lost his legs in Vietnam but walked across the United States to The White House on his knuckles.

Tim Tebow exhibits another quality that winners possess, that is the quality of compassion.

Tebow said right after the loss to New England Patriots that he’s looking forward to the next year.

He won the state championship in high school, the national championship in college, and won the very coveted Heisman Trophy. Winners can overcome major obstacles by being patient, persevering, and working on their

weaknesses as athletes and as human beings.
