Arcadia Mayor Gary Kovacic and former Mayor John Wuo have been picked by voters for two open seats in the City Council election Tuesday night. While the results are preliminary the win was significant over challengers. Kovacic and Wuo challenged former school board member Mary Dougherty, who came in third place, retired businessman Sho Tay and real estate specialist Henry Nunez.

Santa Anita’s 18th annual Derby Day 5K Walk and Run attracted a record 5,683 participants Saturday morning, setting the stage for a potentially huge day at The Great Race Place which will present the 75th running of the Grade I, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby later in the afternoon.

“We sure hope this is a precursor to a fabulous day,” said Santa Anita Vice President of Sales and Marketing Chris Quinn. “This is the best turnout we’ve ever had for this event and we had people of all ages—from 3 and 4-year-old kids, to people in their seventies.

The Santa Anita Derby Day 5K benefits several charities and worthy causes, including Pasadena-based AbilityFirst, the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), the Arcadia High School Athletic Boosters Club, the Arcadia Historical Museum and Arcadia Explorer Scouts.

Come to think of it, sometimes I do share the dog's reason but that wouldn't be proper. Standing in the shade of a tree is one thing but lifting a leg to it is quite another. The thought does create quite an image though. This two-legged creature, slathered in sun block, wearing a ten gallon straw hat and lifting one of those two legs high enough to do any good? I don't think so.

The sun on a really hot day has an effect on my eyesight. I see some things differently. Every Spring I say it is the year I can't wear shorts any more. I'm too old. My knees have developed bags. There are more veins that have become visible. My legs are the same size they always were but somehow they now look kind of spin-

Then summer comes into full swing.

That blessed sunshine rises early in the a.m. and the temperature begins to climb. By the time it reaches the mid80s a funny thing happens.

My eyesight changes. I see my legs as rather attractive.

When it hits 90 I see them as downright gorgeous.

They look good enough to wear shorts.

I case others' eyes are not so affected, or if I should bother to care, I put on a really funky hat to give them something to focus on besides my legs.

What Makes a Winner?

My life has been a series of major obstacles. Escaping from the Russians in World War II, falling down and injuring my leg to the point it almost had to be amputated, limping around in my youth and being called names for being handicapped.

I reached out to God to help me become a more courageous human being and face life’s challenges and become a winner in my chosen profession as a trainer as well as a world champion powerlifter.

Recently I had a chance to meet Bill Walton, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He is a John Wooden disciple. He believes in the Pyramid of Success that John Wooden

put together many years ago and is currently used by athletic teams as well as businesses.

I met John Wooden and follow his coaching methods.

We use his principles to achieve success with athletes as well as our clients in our fitness business.

John Wooden molded Bill Walton into a great human being who has much to offer besides basketball.

Bill suffered with excruciating back pain for many years and had to have major surgery. He was in agony; he reached out and asked for God’s deliverance from the pain and suffering. He currently is doing very well.

What kind of challenges are you going through in your life? There is help.

God answers prayers. He brings people into your life that have answers to many of your physical, mental, physiological, and spiritual challenges. Our community has excellent counselors, teachers, ministers, coaches, and everyday people that can help you. Bill Walton reached out in his challenge with his back issues and came back as a real champion.

We all go through some pain and suffering in our lifetime. That’s the way life is. We have our ups and downs. You can come back from difficulties by following these very simple principles: 1. Ask God to help. 2.

Reach out to people that can help you. They are here in San Gabriel Valley. 3. Workout. It will change your attitude to be more positive. 4. Eat healthy. This will give you great energy and keep your body healthy. 5.

Reach out to others. Help others and a lot of your suffering will leave you as you concentrate on others.

6. Set positive goals for your life as well as your family. 7. The best is yet to be! Reach out for the gold medal in your life!

The Sneiders have trained champions in sports and in life. They are very knowledgeable in all levels of fitness training, from little children to Olympic athletes. You will be happy to have them as your trainers.

An Open Letter to the Community from Pasadena City Councilmember Chris Holden and Mayor Bill Bogaard The officer-involved shooting death of Kendrec McDade on March 24 is tragic for all involved, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family.

Currently, four investigations are in motion: by the Los Angeles County District Attorney, the Office of Independent Review Group, the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Program and the Pasadena Police Department. We believe the four separate investigations will ensure thoroughness, impartiality and fairness.

City Manager Michael Beck and Police Chief Phillip Sanchez have promised the full cooperation of our city and our police department to whatever extent necessary to allow the investigating agen-

cies to conduct complete and fair investigations. We support the city manager and police chief, promising full cooperation and transparency to our community. It is our hope that the community will be patient, as these investigations cannot be rushed.

Findings are expected within several months and will be made public through the City Council’s Public Safety Committee for all to review.

Many questions have been raised about the shooting from city staff and members of the community. It is our expectation that questions will be answered clearly through the independent investigative process, regardless of the outcome. Our entire community needs to know the truth as part of the healing

As elected representatives of our community, we urge all Pasadenans to be patient and to allow the investigations to run their respective courses and return their findings. Following the investigations, there will be ample opportunity for the community and the news media to thoroughly review and discuss the results.

In the meantime, and for the long term, it is our hope that this tragedy will lead to dialogue and actions that will ultimately draw our community closer.

The major windstorm of Dec 1 brought a whole new set of challenges to San Gabriel Valley, and one victim, the crucifix of Jesus at San Gabriel cemetary fell victim to that disaster.

Scores of people turned out on Good Friday to witness the unveiling of the new 14-foot tall wood cross and re-dedication of a lifesize 6-foot-tall metal crucifix of Jesus Christ. The project took 150 hours to repair after the Dec. 1, 2011 windstorm damage from a 70-foot tall tree that fell on the cross and crucifix.

On Tuesday outside the Sierra Madre post office, two people were displaying racist remarks and posters depicting President Obama as a notorious murderer in World War Two. The blatant lies and distortions in addition to equating Obama with Hitler was indeed a little too much for one Sierra Madre reesident on Tuesday, election day.

Actor Barry Schwam took a one man stand against the hatred being spead by the Lyndon LaRouche campaign and makes some compelling arguments why we should not listen to such propaganda: “Everyone has a right to protest and to state their opinion; that goes without saying. But the Laroush psychotics (really, that is what they are; psychotics) are as brainwashed as their message. You cannot argue with

them, as the basis for their arguments are not in truth, but belief in their “god” Lyndon LaRouche. LaRouche is an ungracious, charismatic loudmouth, full of hate. And that is the perfect leader for a psychotic. And it would be funny, if it weren’t so degrading to the Presidency, that they equate President Obama to Adolf Hitler. It is funny, because their own “leader” LaRouche, is followed blindly by them, in much the same way the Hitler youth followed Hitler.

My wife is a psychologist, and I understand psychoses. It is a mental disease that weakens the soul and the mind, and is the basis for so many of movements and campaigns of all sorts, that run our society.

So stand strong everybody, and hold on to your

common sense. Know what you know, and see what you see. All will balance out in the end.”

Supporters of LaRouche describe him as a political leader in the tradition of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Commentators for The Washington Post and The New York Times have variously described him as a conspiracy theorist and a political extremist, and have characterized his movement as a ‘cult’. Some have called him fascist or antisemitic. Norman Bailey, formerly with the National Security Council, described LaRouche’s staff in 1984 as one of the best private intelligence services in the world, while the Heritage Foundation, a think tank, wrote that he leads “what may well be one of the strangest political groups in American history.”

7 Area Schools Designated as ‘California Distinguished’ State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson last week announced that 387 exemplary California public elementary schools were named 2012 California Distinguished Schools for their innovative education programs that encourage students to learn and help close the achievement gap.

“The schools we are recognizing today demonstrate the incredible commitment of California’s teachers, administrators, and school employees to provide a world-class education to every student, in spite of the financial hardships facing our state and our schools,” Torlakson said. “Their dedication is inspiring, and I applaud and admire their passion and persistence.”

The list of schools is attached or may be found on the California Department of Education Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ sr/cs/.

The 2012 California Distinguished Schools Program focuses on California’s students and their entitlement to an equitable and rigorous education.

The program identifies and honors those schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap.

To be invited to apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal and state accountability measures based on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the Academic Performance Index requirements.

Once schools are deemed eligible, the CDE invites them to apply to be recognized as a California Distinguished School. The application process consists of a written application, which includes a comprehensive description of two of the school's signature practices, and a county-led site validation review process, which validates the implementation of those signature practices.

Elementary and secondary schools (middle and high schools) are recognized in alternate years.

This year focuses on elementary schools.

Schools earning the Distinguished School title agree to share their signature practices with other schools and serve as mentors to other educators who want to replicate their work. An updated searchable database of these Signature Practices will be available later this spring by the California Department of Education.

Schools selected for recognition will be honored as Distinguished Schools at award ceremonies where Torlakson will present each school with a 2012 Distinguished School plaque and flag. The event and awards are funded by donations from many of California’s most prominent corporations and statewide educational organizations.

Reforestation Not Taking Root The Forest Service’s reforestation plan for areas hit by the Station Fire has apparently been unsuccesful thus far according to reports fromn the AP. Most of the 900,000 seedlings were dying in the year since they were planted, according to the news agency.

The Associated Press report concluded that the Forest Service said that much of the terrain in the Angeles National Forest is too remote, rocky and steep for reforestation. As a result the agency

is scaling back on its plan to plant three million seedlings over five years across 11,000 acres charred by the 2009 wildfire.

Forest Service officials say they aren’t trying to establish forest cover over the entire scorched area of the San Gabriel Mountains, but are only trying to restore the pockets of trees that existed before the fire.

The agency couldn’t get enough seedlings of various species to duplicate those

burned by the fire, so it chose to go with a mixture of plants that were available and apparently not native to the land The money for 2011’s reforestation came mostly from the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

About $900,000 of the total was spent on last year’s plantings. The remaining $600,000 is expected to fund renewed efforts to plant seedlings in many of the same areas.

This float will be one of the largest floats designed, constructed and decorated, measuring 55' long, 18' wide, and 32' tall.

The new Sierra Madre

float features a large kite and, in keeping with the 2013 parade theme, "Oh, the Places you'll Go!", is meant to convey that "The Sky's the Limit" in what

you want to accomplish.

The kite is 27' long and 16' wide, and will glide side to side, while moving up and down.

The kite will be covered in a combination of floral and dry materials and will fly above Carnation clouds and a deck covered with Irises and Roses. There will be large 3 rainbows covered in flowers and fruits. Riding on the tail of the kite will be 3 Sierra Madre Rose Princesses.

The designer, Charles Meier, was inspired by a concept submitted by Maria Murray. After designing several award-winning floats for Sierra Madre, Charlie started a new

float-building company, Paradiso Parade Floats.

Out of gratitude for Sierra Madre's many years of encouragement and support, Charlie volunteered to help the Association with the development of this year's float design. Charlie is extremely thankful to Sierra Madre for giving him the experience that enabled him to build floats professionally.

"The Sky's the Limit" is now taking shape every Sunday from 10am to 5pm at the Float Barn at Sierra Vista Park. Everyone is welcome to drop by and see our progress. Construction volunteers are always needed!

Local Host Families Needed for Foreign Teens Foreign high school students are scheduled to arrive soon for academic year homestay programs, and the sponsoring organization needs a few more local host families. The students are anxiously awaiting news of their new families. This is the last chance for these young ambassadors to fulfill their life-long dreams, and their placement deadlines are rapidly approaching.

According to Pacific Intercultural Exchange (P.I.E.) President, John Doty, the students are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years, are English-speaking, have their own spending money, carry accident and health insurance, and are anxious to share their cultural experiences with their new American fami-

lies. P.I.E. currently has programs to match almost every family’s needs, ranging in length from one semester to a full academic year, where the students attend local public and private high schools.

P.I.E. area representatives match students with host families by finding common interests and lifestyles through an in-home meeting. Prospective host families are able to review student applications and select the perfect match.

As there are no “typical” host families, P.I.E. can fit a student into just about any situation, whether it is a single parent, a childless couple, a retired couple or a large family.

Families who host for P.I.E. are also eligible to claim a monthly charitable

contribution deduction on their itemized tax returns for each month they host a sponsored student.

For the upcoming programs, P.I.E. has students from Germany, the Former Soviet Union, Venezuela, Argentina, Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands, Brazil, Korea, Mexico, Denmark, China, and many other countries.

P.I.E. is a non-profit educational organization that has sponsored more than 25,000 students from 45 countries since its founding in 1975. The organization is designated by the United States Department of State and is listed by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET), certifying that the organization complies with the standards set forth

in CSIET’s Standards for International Educational Travel Programs.

Doty encourages families to contact the program immediately, as it will allow the proper time for the students and hosts to get to know one another before they actually meet for the first time.

Of Buddhists and Transgender Queens

When All Is Said And Dunn

By Bill Dunn You never know how people are going to react when they buck the trends of what is considered normal. Lately it seems like those boundaries are being pushed no matter where you are in this twisted world. A couple have caught my attention lately and I thought I would share them with you.

Here locally we have a little brouhaha cooking up in the City of Rosemead. It started as a group of neighbors complaining about the stench coming from a local slaughterhouse and has now blossomed into a full blown religious lawsuit.

It should never have gotten this far, but now that the Chinese American Live Poultry Vikon Inc., or CAL Poultry for short, is coming up on its city imposed closing, they are grasping at straws. In particular, the religious straw, in order to keep its doors open. So let the litigious sucking begin.

The two owners of CAL Poultry and one of their customers are suing the City claiming religious persecution against the Buddhist religion. Apparently Buddhists rely heavily on freshly slaughtered chickens as part of their religious practice and CAL poultry is the closest one for folks here in the San Gabriel Valley.

I’m no vegetarian nor a chicken rights activist, but I am a staunch anti stink activist and if I lived anywhere near to CAL Poultry I wouldn’t care what they were doing there, I would want it gone.

In a true display as to how clueless city governments can be the story goes like this: Cal Poultry opened in January 1991.

Rosemead’s city council passed an ordinance prohibiting poultry slaughter

within the city limits in May of 1991. For some mysterious reason the city allowed CAL poultry to keep operating.

CAL Poultry remained open and allowed to smell up the area until the complaints reached a fevered pitch in 2010.

That’s when the current Rosemead City Council jumped into action. They ordered ALL poultry slaughterhouses in Rosemead to pack their cleavers and get out of Dodge, well Rosemead. They were given until May 13th 2012. To nobody’s surprise CAL Poultry was the only one left after 19 years and I think felt a little singled out.

So, as Rosemead’s City Attorney was quoted as saying “the City wasn’t surprised” when CAL Poultry filed their lawsuit on March 21st. So due to the bizarre inaction of all the previous city councils of Rosemead the weirdness has begun anew instead of just ending. Trust me kids, I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

So chicken killers suing a local city on behalf of the Buddhist religion is not weird enough for you?

Then let’s turn our attention to the world of beauty pageants shall we?

The pageant in question is Miss Canada and the contestant is finalist Jenna Talackova . Over the course of the last couple of weeks we have seen Miss Talackova go from being a contestant, to being ousted as a contestant, to being reinstated as a contestant. She has been one busy girl.

The reason for these changes is because Jenna was born a male. There is nothing wrong with that.

Some of the best people I know were born male.

Most stay that way, but who am I to deny anyone the right to follow their dreams?

The major bone of contention here was how Jenna listed her gender on her application. She described herself as female which is how she had viewed herself since the age of 4. The term that everyone has attached to her since this dust up began is transgender.

Being the enlightened forward thinking individ-

ual that I am, or at least that I think I am, I thought I knew what that meant.

Once I did a little research I found the transgender/ transsexual waters to be muddied at best. There are numerous descriptions that Jenna could have used and transgender works as good as any of them. Let’s just say, for brevity’s sake, that Jenna has had all the necessary procedures to qualify her as a her.

So more power to her.

Not only do I admire her for making a decision and sticking to it, the results are amazing. She looks absolutely stunning and is a real head turner.

She actually looks just like the type of woman Donald Trump might hook up with or marry, but I don’t think that will be happening any time soon.

You see the comb over king is the one that owns the Miss Canada pageant, as well as the Miss Universe pageant and was the first voice we heard on TMZ saying Jenna was not the type of gal the pageant wanted. As far as he was concerned, she was out.

That was until Jenna solicited the help of, or was it solicited by, attorney and professional self promoter Gloria Alred.

All of a sudden Donny and Miss Canada changed their tune and Jenna was back in the contest. Gloria seems to have that effect on people.

Even though I know she won’t, I really hope Jenna makes it to Miss Universe. I never watch the show, but I would if she was in the mix and I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one. I’m betting, along with Donny & Gloria, if Miss Canada is televised it will have its highest ratings ever.

Gee I wonder if Gloria knows about CAL Poultry yet? I’m sure that’s a case that she can sink her teeth in to.

Monrovia Passes Moratorium on New Smoke Shops As a result of a new smoke shop moving onto Myrtle Avenue, the Monrovia City Council passed an emergency ordnance putting in place a moratorium on new smoke shops coming into town.

According to Planning Division Manager Craig Jimenez, the ordinance has no effect on the new store, O.G. Smoke Shop which has already obtained a business license. Outcry against the new shop at the last city council meeting was what lead to the council discussing the issue. But the council’s action has no affect O.G. (which stands for Original Gangster in common lexicon).

O.G.’s own web site lists as part of its inventory “Hand pipes, water pipes, specialty pipes, and hookah pipes.” The site also states “We carry the top brands in cigarettes, RYO tobacco, pipe tobacco, rolling papers, wraps, blunts, hookah tobacco, and legal spice…. Our inventory also includes a huge variety of lighters, ashtrays, cases, grinders, scales, detox products, incense, hats, tshirts, and more.”

Pam Fitzpatrick, one of the owner of a Myrtle Avenue shop, Dollmakers/ Kattywompus, was one of those who spoke to the council with concerns about O.G.

By Susan Motander Among her concerns was the sale of “legal spice” and what she referred to as drug paraphernalia.

She said her major concern was the location of the shop on Myrtle Avenue.

“People have said that since they (the shop owners) have a legal right to sell this stuff, it is up to parents to keep their kids away from the shop.

How can they do that we when have done everything we could to make Myrtle Avenue the sort of place parents could allow their children to go to without concerns about their safety.”

Fitzpatrick explained that for many years the merchants association in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and the city has established successive five years plans for the improvement of Old Town.

“This type of shop was never in any of our plans. We have worked hard to create family friendly environment,” she said.

Over the years many people have likened Old Town to Main Street in Disneyland, Fitzpatrick stated.

“Can you image Disneyland putting a ‘head shop’ on Main Street?” she questioned.

There have been rumors that the shop would sell “medical marijuana.”

Jimenez said this was not

possible as the city had an ordinance in place that prohibited the sale of “anything which violates Federal Law and this would include marijuana, even medical marijuana.”

It appears that the shop will be selling “legal spice” a substance that has been referred to as “synthetic cannabis.” The State of California has passed legislation making 5 of the components formerly used in “spice” illegal. According to Monrovia Police Chief Jim Hunt, shops have altered the makeup of “spice” to avoid the illegal substances, however, little is known of the effects of the new compounds.

Jimenez said that the Council will discuss this matter early next month and that additional public input would be possible at that time.

There are three other smoke shops in Monrovia.

Two of these, like O.G., sell water pipes and such. These are Burning Earth Smoke Shop in the 100 block of West Foothill Boulevar336 West d and the Gift Shop of the Exotics (and UHaul Rental) on East Huntington Drive (almost into Duarte).

The third shop, Discount Cigarettes at 336 West Huntington does not sell smoking related paraphernalia.

The Temple City Unified School District will host a free Community Health Fair and 5K Run/ Walk on May 12, 2012 at Temple City Park, located at 9701 Las Tunas Drive in Temple City.

The Run/Walk is free and runners and walkers will receive a t-shirt (supplies are limited). Check-in for the Run/Walk will begin at 6:30 a.m., with the Run/Walk beginning at 7:30 a.m. sharp!

The registration form must be turned in to Jeanne St. Pierre; the deadline for registration is April 27. Registration forms for the 5K Run/Walk are available at the TCUSD District

Office, all school sites, and at City Hall in Temple City.

Late registration on the day of the event will be taken, but T-shirts are limited to those who register in advance.

The free Community Health Fair will be held from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m., also at Temple City Park. A dentist will provide student dental screenings, which are mandated by the State. The Fair will also include diabetes, grip strength, body fat, and blood pressure screenings.

Arcadia Woman's Club Takes Bow for Mad Hatters Tea & Fashion Show Former Mayor Gail Marshall, chair of the successful Mad Hatters Tea, along with Karen Crisci, owner of Magnolia, at 124 E. Foothill Blvd. in Arcadia, were the key players in the exciting fashion show held at the Woman’s clubhouse Saturday, March 24th.

The Queen of Hearts (Meredith Brucker), Alice (Kristin Shofield) and the Mad Hatter (Gail Marshall) were in costume. The children played croquet with Alice in the private gardens of the club while adults bid on 20 scrumptious baskets and sipped libations and nipped on appetizers on the patio.

Schley Brothers Reunion at Bug-In 37 One of the highlights of the Up-coming FLAT-4 BUG-IN 37, being held at the Irwindale Dragstrip on April 29th, will be the reunion of the Schley Brothers Lightning Bugs. These three legendary VW race cars were campaigned by Mark and Paul at dragstrips across the country from 1965 through 1975 . . . but they have never been seen all together until now.

Mark crashed the Oval Window at Bug-In 3, at O.C.I.R. in October 1969.

It was wadded up pretty good. The “Chop-top” was built from scratch and

raced for three years or so before being sold to Puerto Rican enthusiast, Diego Febles, where re-painted bright yellow it raced locally for many years. In 1973 the Schley Brothers built the Lightning Bug Dragster and raced it until late 1975, when it was also sold.

Now, 37 years later, Scottish collector/racer, Russell Ritchie, has restored an exact replica of the original Lightning Bug and shipped it over for the Bug-In. It has been on display at the NHRA Museum for the last month. In the past couple years Mark and

Hundreds Rally for Peace and Justice in McDade Shooting

Hundreds brought signs of solidarity with the parents of the Azusa teen killed in a police involved shooting March 24.

call for peace and justice was held Tuesday evening on the steps of Pasadena City Hall. Sponsored, in part, by Joe Brown President of the local NAACP. The protest drew approximately 200 people to seek justice in the wake of the latest police officer involved shooting of Kendrec McDade on March 24 in Pasadena.

McDade's mother Anya Slaughter, father Kenneth McDade, as well as one of the family grandmothers stood side by side, hand in hand with their lawyer Caree Harper, NAACP leaders and religious leaders as well as a few people from Occupy LA. The attorney for McDade's mother, Caree Harper offered the microphone to Anya Slaughter but was too emotional to speak to the gathered crowd of supporters.

McDade's father, Kenneth however, told the crowd his family having a very difficult time and thanked everyone for their cards and help but added "Somebody's got to be held accountable. As long as I've got life in my body I'm going to find out what happened to my son."

Leroy Barnes and numerous other victims of police shootings were named in posters held aloft as well as signs bearing the names of the officers involved in the shootings Pasadena officers who shot McDade on March 24.

United States and made several references to Trayvon Martin whose murder continues to dominate the national news.

While the circumstances are considerably different in the Trayvon Martin case, the Kendrec McDade killing has sparked a wave of fear and loathing in the minds of many in the community.

Harper said, “We love the police, but there are occasionally a few bad apples in a dept.”

Phillip Sanchez, Pasadena Police Chief, has taken a proactive approach to handling the public and personally attends many community meetings and peace marches in the hope that he and his department be as transparent as possible with the investigation into the shooting that led to McDade’s death March 24.

While many specific questions remain unanswered, there is a sign that progress is being made with so much community dialogue according to one person with whom we spoke Tuesday evening. “ The fact that so many people from all walks of life and ethnicity have come out to support this family is a blessing. People are talking and the police are listening, hopefully.” said one woman who preferred to remain anonymous.

In an email sent to media agencies last week, Caree Harper stated: “Mr. McDade was not accused of stealing Carrillo's backpack- not even by police accounts. Further, it is our contention that he ( McDade

) did not commit a crime at all that evening.”

“It is about the Sunset Street shooting location and the fact that Griffin and Newlen killed Mr. McDade without articulating why they did so; without warning; and without seeing any objects on him. Those officers made calculated decisions not to video/audiotape the incident with the patrol car camerasthis was no "split second decision". This frantic attempt to shift the blame to Mr. McDade is repulsive. Kendrec was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Caree Harper also said that the 911 caller, Oscar Carrillo, stated that when you are so afraid for your life you don't think about what you are saying in the 911 call…referring to his lies that ultimately led to Kendrec McDade’s death.

“Well, he was so afraid for his life that he pursued the alleged perpetrators instead of running a few feet back to the taco shop and yell for help. Did police search Carrillo's car and confirm that HE was not armed? What gave him sudden Superman courage to pursue after being so "scared"? Again, Carrillo was NOT the triggerman, the officers each made their own independent decision to shoot, but the police had a duty to ask these questions investigate the contradiction that night.”

Harper said.

A Civil lawsuit has been filed in the case and several independent investigations are ongoing including one by the FBI.

Emotional Funeral Service for Azusa Student Killed by Pasadena Police Held Saturday

undreds of family members, friends and supporters ( many of whom were wearing blue…the color of his team Azusa football team) attended a funeral service Saturday for Kendrec “Mac” McDade, a 19-yearold college student who was unarmed when he was shot and killed by two Pasadena police officers on March 24.

Approximately 350 people filled the Metropolitan Baptist Church on Fair Oaks Avenue in Altadena to say ‘goodbye’ to the Citrus College student who was best known as MAC to his friends. Officiating was Pastor AK Brown.

The family has filed wrongful death and civil rights complaints against the city. The American Civil Liberties Union and the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People have also raised concerns about the shooting.Last week, the FBI announced that it would open a civil rights investigation into the McDade case.

The Pasadena shooting has raised questions about the responsibility of people who report crimes and the possible excessive

use of force by law enforcement officers.The officerinvolved shooting occurred March 24 after a 911 caller said two men stole a backpack and that both had guns.

The reason the 911 called made the allegations was to expedite the Police response, Oscar Carrillo later admitted.

Officers were in pursuit of McDade, on foot and in a squad car, when McDade quickly approached the squad car and allegedly reached in his waistband. Phillip Sanchez, Chief of police said the officer in the car, fearing for his life, fired several shots at the suspect. The other officer also fired, in

The 911 caller, Oscar Carrillo, later admitted to police that he fabricated the details and was charged with involuntary manslaughter. He was then arrested and released to ICE custody after it appeared that he was also an illegial alien. He has been ordered to stay in Pasasden under electronic monitoring for the duration of the criminal proceedings in this case. At which time Oscar Caririllo

will be deported to Mexico for the second time.

During Saturday’s service, family, friends and Azusa High School classmates remembered McDade as a vibrant young man. The football star’s jersey was folded in a framed case next to a collage of photos inside the church.

Cameras were not allowed in the sanctuary where the 2-hour service was held and one mourner asked that those in addendance not to speak to the media waiting outside the church.

At that moment, severale teenagers held up their Celebration of Life programmes in an effort to block television crews from photographing the casket leaving the church.

One young woman was heard saying “ Have some respect!” to one telvision crew.

May 5 would have been Kendrec Lavelle McDade’s 20th birthday.

“The play began with an image in my head. Tennessee Williams was sitting at his typewriter on a patio of a Southern hotel. It was morning. A tall, mysterious blonde woman was sipping a drink and fighting with him. The woman began flirting with a Youngman who was below by the swimming pool. “It became clear when I attempted to write subsequent scenes that I needed to ground the play into more realistic details of Tennessee Williams’ life, so the Southern hotel became a New York City hotel room in 1972. I saturated myself in biographical information

and the conflict of the male/ female parts of Tennessee Williams. I concentrated on the emotions of the characters, and discovered the areas where my personal experiences merged with episodes of Williams’ life.

“Time became fluid and people and places began melting into one another, and I saw that, perhaps, the real drama was the inner unconscious drama of the artist’s psyche. The play became about the need to balance opposites, about the need to forgive other people, and especially about the need for self-forgiveness. “‘Tennessee in the Summer’ received its debut in the spring of 1985 in the Valencia Rose Cabaret Room in San Francisco, CA, which was originally a mortuary. They converted a small upstairs viewing room for theatre. It was in this same room that talents like Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams got their starts. In that first production, my lover of 42 years, Bill Stanton, had a clicker in his hand which he would snap to signal the lighting technician when it was time to change the lights in a scene. Of course, things have changed immeasurably since then.”

Mission Model Contest Planned for April 21

San Gabriel Mission’s History Day on Saturday, April 21, will feature the Eighth Annual Model Mission Exhibit and Contest scheduled from 1p.m. to 3 p.m. that is co-sponsored by the Ramona Museum of California History in San Gabriel and San Gabriel Mission.

Each year, thousands of fourth-grade elementary school students in California build a model of a California mission using various materials. And, this year a group/ family mission model-building project category is included for the fourth straight year to go along with the fourth grade category and any age category.

Entry forms will be accepted through April 16 (also can be mailed no later than that day), for contestants who live in Southern California.

This year, up to $500 total in cash or prizes is waiting to be won. All contestants will receive a gift from San Gabriel Mission, and be entered into free prize drawings, announced contest Director Chuck Lyons of San Gabriel Mission.

Categories are fourth grade student at any public or private school in Southern California, person of any age living in Southern California, and any family/group living in Southern California. The winner of the first two categories will receive $75, second place will receive $50, and

third place will receive $25.

The winner of the family/ group project will receive a gift pack worth at least $100 from San Gabriel Mission.

In addition, there will be a $100 prize for the Overall Model Champion, two Director’s Awards, and the top two classrooms with the most participation will be awarded $100 in history books, maps and more from San Gabriel Mission.

The models can be of any of the 21 missions in California, be made of various materials, and include the church, other buildings and gardens, and should be no larger than three feet wide by three feet long.

Interested persons should visit mission’s web site www.sangabrielmissionchurch.org or mission’s gift shop at 427 S. Junipero Serra Dr. in San Gabriel to get more information and the entry form. An entry form must be delivered or mailed no later than April 16. After April 16, entrants should visit or call the gift shop and ask if there is space for the entry to be assigned an entry number. The fee to enter is only regular admission to the museum when contestants arrive on April 21. A parent or guardian age 18 or older must be with the student during the contest and pay a regular admission fee.

Contestants must bring their completed model and sign-in between Noon and 12:45 p.m. on April 21, so their model is ready for viewing and judging no later than 1 p.m. Models will be displayed until 3 p.m. Contestants can keep their model after the contest.

San Gabriel Mission History Day was created so that, once a month on a Saturday, visitors can learn more about mission history: people, cultures, events, buildings, artwork, artifacts, plant life and more. Some months a contest is scheduled.

Japanese Garden Reopens at Huntington Library

By Susan Motander A milestone birthday was approaching and a beautiful new neighbor had just moved in next door.

The solution to this dilemma was a facelift. That was exactly what the historic Japanese Garden at the Huntington Library in San Marino needed and received. The garden is reopening after yearlong renovation just in time to celebrate its 100th birthday.

In recent years this charming garden was beginning to show its age. Wood was rotting, there had been termite damage, soil erosion has taken place and even the faux bois cement trellises were crumbling in places. The dowdy appearance of the old grand dame was only accentuated when the beautiful new Chinese Garden, Liu Fang Yuan (garden of Flowering Fragrance) opened.

Now with the refurbishment almost complete, the garden has been reopened as of Thursday, April 11.

It can be viewed whenever the Huntington Library and Gardens are open to the public.

Many favorite old sites are still there: the Moon Bridge (no long the shiny red of childhood memory – but lovely none the less), the koi pond, the Japanese House, the Zen Garden with its raked gravel and rock garden, the Bonsai court.

But there are new features as well.

The restored Teahouse, called Seifu-an (the Arbor of Pure Breeze), was a gift from the Pasadena Buddhist Temple in the 1960s. This year it was shipped back to Kyoto where it was originally built

and was restored by the son of the original architect.

Situated on a ridge above the Japanese House, the teahouse is now surrounded by a lovely new Tea Garden. From the level of the teahouse, a waterfall has been added which tumbled down the hill to the Koi Ponds that surround the Moon Bridge and footpaths below the Japanese House.

The Japanese House itself was also extensively restored. It was originally built in 1904 and so predates the Garden the Huntingtons built. The house may look a bit different from what one may remember as a number of architectural features, which had been covered over or removed during the years, have been restored.

The pond system, in fact the entire water system, was also repaired as well as those faux bois (false wood) trellis. The trellises are very lovely at the moment as the wisteria which crawl up and over them are in bloom. In fact, Spring has always been an awe inspiring time in the Japanese Garden and this year it is especially wonder filled with its new spruced up look.

It was in 1911 that Henry Huntington decided to follow the latest trend and build a Japanese Garden.

They were all the rage as were all things Asian in feel (think of Greene and Greene architecture and its homage to Japanese features).

Many of the plants and features of Huntington’s Garden, including the Japanese House and the Moon Bridge, originally came from another Japanese Garden in Pasadena. This was a com-

mercial venture that failed and so Huntington was able to purchase these for his own creation.

Since 1928 when the Huntington was opened to the public, the Japanese Garden has been a special place. It has created memories for millions.

Unfortunately, during World War II due to labor shortages and a less then favorable sentiment toward all things Japanese, the garden fell was neglected and fell into disrepair. In the 1950s, the San Marino league helped to repair the Garden and refurbishment of its buildings.

With this new restoration, even more will come to appreciate the beauty of this tranquil place.

The Huntington Library and Gardens are open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from Noon to 4:30 p.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The facility is closed on Tuesday.

On Monday Holidays, the Huntington opens at 10:30 a.m.

Weekday admission is $15 for Adults, $12 for Seniors, $10 for students aged 12-18, $6 for Youth 5-11, and Children under 5 are free.

Weekends and Monday Holidays the rates rise to $20 for Adults, and $15 for Seniors with other Admissions remaining the same. Admission is free to all visitors on the first Thursday of every month with advance tickets.

The local charity, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, selects a grand estate size home each year and solicits designers to redecorate the house. The showcase will be open starting this Sunday, April 15 and will remain open Tuesday through Sunday until May 13. This year the home is a 1927 Spanish Colonial villa designed by John Winford Byers.

The 16-room home is set on just over two acres and commands a stunning view of an arroyo to its west. There are five bedrooms (with a traveler’s room featuring three Murphy beds) in the main house and several rooms for gathering and socializing including a media room, card room and living room. There are also at least three studies/libraries and a reading room. All of this surrounds an Andalusian Courtyard, which is open on one side.

The Courtyard garden is just one of seven garden design areas included in the tour this year. The Courtyard looks down on the pool and beyond to the arroyo. The property boasts two very different waterfalls and a lovely rose garden, which is almost hidden away down a separate little stairway at the front of the property.

In addition there is a separate house, La Casita, with a two-bedroom suite on the upper level with its own bath and sitting room and a writer’s retreat on

the lower level complete with its own, bath, kitchenette and balcony overlooking one of the waterfalls.

The fascinating feature of the retreat is a flat screen, wall mounted computer console that is an idea center for the writer in residence. The garage, which is located in this building, has been remodeled into a man cave dedicated to racing cars, card games, cigars and scotch (even the light fixtures are recycled Glenlivet’s Scotch bottles).

As always, the fun at Showcase House is finding all the fun little details the designers have included.

In the kitchen/ breakfast room (not a small space and in no way a nook) the designers, Parker West Interiors, have taken the detail of the scalloped copper edging around a door in the butler’s pantry and repeated it in the design of the stove hood and the drapery valances. Another delightful detail here is the black and white portrait of the house in the tile work over the stove. It looks vintage, possibly original, and yet it was just put in In every room there are such touches. The enjoyment in viewing the houses each year is in spotting them. In the lady’s study on the second floor, the ribbon corkboard is actually a fabric print. The tree trunk coffee table in the library is made of brass. The three small bedrooms on the second floor’s south wing all flow

together with coordinating colors and yet were done by three separate designers working independently.

Everyone will see different details to amuse and amaze.

Showcase us not handicap accessible and children under 12 including infants are not permitted on the property. No photography is allowed and flat shoes are required. No large purses, bags or knapsacks are allowed on the tour. Cell phones must be turned off and smoking is prohibited.

Proceeds from showcase house go to support music in the community in several ways. Grants and gifts are made to support the L.A. Philharmonic, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and local symphonic, cultural and education programs for youth. Since its founding in 1948 more than $18 million in grants and gifts have been awarded in this way.

In addition the group funds a Music Mobile to bring symphonic music to 3rd grade students locally, a Youth Concert by the Philharmonic for 4th graders and an Instrumental Competition for young musicians with nearly $450,00 in prize money awarded since 1985.

POLICE BLOTTERS Arcadia PD

For the period of Sunday, April 1st, through Saturday, April 7th, the Police Department responded to 980 calls for service of which 120 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, April 1: Around 5:38 p.m., an officer responded to JCPenney at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a theft report.

A juvenile suspect concealed merchandise inside his sweatshirt, and exited the store without making payment. The 15-year-old Hispanic male was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

A records check revealed the juvenile had run away from a youth center and was reported missing by the Baldwin Park Police Department. He was later released to the Department of Child and Family Services.

At approximately 10:22 p.m., officers responded to Bar Louie, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding two male subjects refusing to leave the location. Officers discovered the suspects were intoxicated and unable to care for themselves.

One suspect also exposed himself to patrons, including children. The 25-yearold Hispanic males were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Monday, April 2:

At about 2:33 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 000 block of West Arthur Avenue regarding a burglary report. The victim returned home and discovered several items missing, including cash and electronics. One resident believed she may have left a rear door unlocked. No one saw or heard anything suspicious.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m., an officer responded to the UPS Store, 713 West Duarte Road, in regards to a burglary report. The manager discovered unknown suspect(s) stole a bag of cash from an unsecured filing cabinet. No signs of forced entry were located and the manager was not sure if he activated the alarm.

Tuesday, April 3: At about 11:06 a.m., an officer responded to Foothill Boulevard and Baldwin Avenue regarding a hit-and-run traffic accident. While the victim was yielding to make a left turn, a driver sideswiped her vehicle and fled the scene. The vehicle is described as a white box style truck. No injuries were reported.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a white Expedition for an illegal turn, on Huntington Drive at Centennial Way. The driver was observed turning left from the number two lane. An investigation revealed the 45-year-old Hispanic female was never

issued a license. She was cited and released in the field, and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Wednesday, April 4: Around 10:35 a.m., officers were dispatched to Right Start Mortgage, 130 East Huntington Drive, in regards to a vandalism report.

A juvenile male climbed onto the building and jumped onto the hood of an

The suspects exited the vehicle and led the officer on a foot pursuit through a strip mall near Duarte Road and Santa Anita Avenue. Shortly after, they were locat-

e d in an office building parking lot, 16 Campus Drive, where they were taken into custody without incident. An investigation revealed the driver, a 26-year-old Hispanic male, was on felony probation and had a suspended license. The 18-year-old Hispanic male passenger was also on felony probation

and had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, and the 28-year-old Hispanic female passenger was found to be a parolee-at-large.

Thursday, April 5: Shortly after 3:27 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a Honda for tinted windows, on Santa Anita Avenue at Wistaria Avenue. The officer noticed several spray paint cans in the back seat of the vehicle and recovered spray paint can tips and gloves on the driver and passenger’s person. The 19-year-old Hispanic male and 18-yearold White male were arrested for Possession of Vandalism Tools, and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At about 6:06 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding an identity theft investigation. The victim discovered his social security number had been used by an unknown suspect to file a 2011 Tax Return. The victim has no idea how his information was compromised and is desirous of prosecution.

Friday, April 6: Around 1:30 p.m., an employee at CVS, 188 East Live Oak Avenue, observed a female subject conceal make up brushes inside a black purse and exit the store without making payment. The suspect is described as Hispanic, between 30 to 35-years-

old, 5’6” tall, 200 lbs., with dark hair with blonde highlights, wearing a dark jacket, brown shirt, and black pants. She suspect was recorded on video surveillance and can be recognized if seen again.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., officers were traveling westbound on Huntington Drive, west of Santa Anita Avenue, when they discovered a vehicle with expired registration. The driver explained the vehicle did not belong to her. A records check revealed she had an expired license and no insurance. She was cited and released in the field, and the vehicle was left legally parked.

Saturday, April 7: At roughly 4:05 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Sport Chalet at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a theft report. A male juvenile was observed concealing an air soft gun and air soft ammunition inside his backpack, and exited the store without making payment. A search of his person revealed he was in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The 12-year-old Asian male was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. He was later released to his mother.

Around 7:13 p.m., a male subject was observed removing cash from a cash register at Nordstrom at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue.

Shots Fired On April 2 at 8:40 p.m., dispatch received numerous 9-1-1 calls of shots fired in the area of Sherman and Los Angeles. Officers responded to the area and found six cartridge casings in the street and two bullet holes in a front facing wall in the 1200 block of Sherman. No one was injured. A compact car was seen right after the shooting, driving westbound on Cherry at a high rate of speed. No suspect description. Investigation continuing.

Parolee-at-Large / Possession of Burglary Tools / Possession of a Deadly Weapon On April 4 at 2:39 a.m., an officer stopped and contacted a male and female walking in the 500 block of Parkrose. Upon talking with them, their statements conflicted as to why they were in the area and where they were going. Further investigation revealed the male subject was a paroleeat-large with an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody. The officer located a large knife and a burglary tool near the area where he arrested the suspect.

The suspect later admitted possession of the knife and the burglary tool. He was

charged with the additional crimes.

Prowling On April 4 at 5:35 a.m., officers were dispatched to 600 block of West Olive, where a suspect was seen prowling at a residence.

When the resident went outside, the suspect fled, running eastbound through a neighbor’s yard. An area search was conducted for the suspect, but he was not located. Investigation continuing.

Robbery April 5 at 2:14 p.m., a robbery was reported in the 1600 block of South Mountain. A female victim went to a business parking lot to meet a subject she contacted on Craigslist. The victim was purchasing a brand new iPhone from the suspect. The suspect approached the victim, who was standing outside her vehicle, and handed her a box. As she inspected the box, the suspect grabbed her money from the front pocket of her sweatshirt, and the force caused her to fall backwards. The suspect fled with the money, running north towards Evergreen. He was described as a male White, 30 years old, 6’0”, 180 pounds, black spiked hair, wearing a grey sweatshirt.

Investigation continuing.

Residential Burglary April 5 at 5:42 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of Mountain reported that someone had broken into their home. The suspect entered the location through a front window and ransacked the home, taking jewelry, a safe, and other miscellaneous items.

A neighbor saw a possible suspect on the property.

The suspect is described as a male Hispanic or Filipino, 25 years old, 5’5”, thin build, wearing glasses, a tan sweater and blue jeans. The suspect was driving a white, 2 door, older model Acura, with pink primer around the doors and a black paper license plate with the word “power” written on it.

Investigation continuing.

Vehicle Burglary April 5 at 5:54 p.m., a vehicle burglary was reported in the 300 block of South Canyon. The victim parked her vehicle on the street at 7:30 p.m. and returned to her vehicle the next morning at 9:00 a.m. There were no signs of forced entry, and the victim did not realize a seat was missing from the vehicle until 5:00 p.m. that day. She then reported the burglary to police. Investigation continuing.

Vehicle Burglary April 6 at 10:48 a.m., a vehicle was reported burglarized in the 1800 block of Sixth Avenue. The vehicle was parked in the street in front of a residence at 1:00 a.m. and locked. The victim returned to vehicle 10:30 a.m. and found the passenger door unlocked.

The glove compartment was ransacked and her purse was taken from the trunk. The investigation is continuing.

Brandishing a Handgun in a Threatening Manner Suspects Arrested April 8 at 7:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Los Angeles Street regarding a suspect that drove by in a black Nissan Altima,

brandishing a handgun in a threatening manner. The Foothill Air Support Team helicopter was monitoring the radio frequency and located the suspect vehicle.

The helicopter directed responding units to the vehicle and it was stopped at Ivy and Cypress. The victim positively identified the vehicle and the driver, as the suspect, but she did not desire prosecution. The vehicle was searched, but the gun was not located. The driver was unlicensed and did not have valid identification. He was arrested and later released upon verifying his identity. A passenger was arrested for violation of Monrovia’s gang injunction and was taken into custody. Two other occupants in the vehicle were identified and released.

Weapons Violation Suspect Arrested April 7 at 8:20 p.m., Special Enforcement Team officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Treelane and Camino Real because the license plate was found to have a warrant associated to it.

Upon contacting the female driver, she was found to be unlicensed. A search of the vehicle revealed a small amount of marijuana inside the vehicle and a handgun was found concealed in the engine compartment; the gun was wrapped in a white towel and wedged against the vehicle battery.

The male passenger is the registered owner of the vehicle. He was arrested and charged for possessing the firearm. He was also found to be in possession of a stolen access card.

Sierra Madre Search & Rescue During the month of March, Sierra Madre Search and Rescue (SMSR) responded to six calls for assistance.

Injured Hiker, Eaton Canyon/Medical Emergency, Big Santa Anita Canyon: SMSR responded to a mutual-aid call from Altadena Mountain Rescue regarding an injured hiker in Eaton Canyon. Team members assisted Altadena personnel in evacuating the injured party via litter wheel-out.

Just as this operation was being secured, SMSR was called to a medical emergency in Big Santa Anita Canyon. Additional SMSR members responded along with those from the Eaton Canyon rescue.

The patient was assessed at the scene and evacuated to Chantry Flat via litter wheel-out by SMSR and L.A. County Fire personnel, then transported to the hospital by ambulance Missing Backpacker, Switzer Falls: The Team responded to a mutual-aid call from Montrose Search and Rescue regarding a missing backpacker.

SMSR crews worked several assignments in the search area. A combined crew from SMSR and Montrose found the subject deceased.

Missing Hiker, Millard Canyon: Responding to a mutual-aid call from Altadena Mountain Rescue, SMSR members were dispatched to search for a hiker who had been

missing for two days. A crew of EMT-certified SMSR members located the subject after dark and provided initial medical treatment. Personnel from other participating agencies helped evacuate the subject to the trailhead, where they were transported to the hospital.

Missing Hikers, Big Santa Anita Canyon: Shortly after completing a technical rescue training exercise in adverse weather conditions, the Team was notified by Montrose Search and Rescue that a party of four hikers were missing in the Mt. Wilson area. SMSR crews were dispatched along several likely routes of travel and located the party on a trail in Big Santa Anita Canyon. The hikers were uninjured and were escorted to the trailhead at Chantry Flat.

For 60 years the allvolunteer Sierra Madre Search and Rescue team has been responding to calls for help in the local mountains and beyond.

Funded entirely by private donations, SMSR provides a range of public programs on wilderness safety in addition to its search and rescue activities. The Team never charges for any of its services.
