Tran declares victory after lead grows slightly in congressional race

Tran declaredvictory Monday after an additional 36 votes increased his lead over incumbent Rep. Michelle Steel, R-Cypress.

The latest vote count that concluded Monday evening showed Tran's lead edged upward from 545 votes to 581 in the 45th Congressional District race.

Tran leads 157,622157,041, or 50.1% to 49.9% of the vote, according to the California Secretary of State's Office.

Tran gained 26 votes in his lead over Steel following Saturday's count in Orange County, the Registrar of Voters reported. No ballots from the Los Angeles County areas of the district were counted Saturday. No ballots were counted Sunday.

Ballot processing in the LA County section of the district will resume Tuesday, according to the RegistrarRecorder/County Clerk's office.

Tran, a consumer rights attorney and co-owner of an Anaheim pharmacy with his wife Michelle, trails in Orange County 142,219138,586 votes, or 50.65%49.35%. He leads in the LA County portion — Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens and a section of Lakewood — 19,036-14,822, or 56.2%43.8%.

While the margin is still very slim, Tran released a statement Monday proclaiming victory.

“This victory is a testament to the spirit and resilience of our commu-

nity," Tran said. "As the son of Vietnamese refugees, I understand firsthand the journey and sacrifices many families in our district have made for a better life. My parents came to this country to escape oppression and pursue the American Dream, and their story reflects the journey of so many here in Southern California.

"Throughoutthis campaign, I heard from voters who wanted representation that prioritizes our community’s unique challenges. From the need for affordable healthcare and housing to the importance of an economy that includes everyone, people here are looking to the future with hope and determination. I look forward to representing that optimism and working tirelessly to ensure that our

communities’ voices are heard in Washington.

"I want to thank every volunteer, supporter, and voter who believed in our campaign’s mission. This victory is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish together. I am honored to represent you and eager to get to work and put people first.”

Steel, who is seeking a third term, or her campaign have not commented on the race publicly since Nov. 4, the day before Election Day.

Tran led by 519 votes entering vote counting Saturday, 480 votes entering Friday, 397 votes entering Thursday, 314 entering Wednesday and 102 at the start of ballot processing Tuesday. His first lead posted Nov. 16, moving ahead by 36 votes after trailing by 11,363

on Nov. 6.

On Nov. 8 Tran trailed by 7,590 votes, 6,901 Nov. 9, 6,128 Nov. 10 when only ballots from LA County were processed, 3,908 Nov. 11, 2,227 Nov. 12, 349 Nov. 13, 236 Nov. 14, and 58 Nov. 15.

The number of ballots remaining to be counted was not known.

HouseRepublicans attained 219 seats as of Tuesday, one over the 218 needed for a majority, the Associated Press reported. Democrats have 213 seats, and three races are still undecided.

Republicans won 53 seats in the Senate, gaining four. Democrats lost four and have 47 Senate seats.

The GOP also won 27 of the 50 governorships that were up for grabs this election.

Decision on Menendez brothers' bid for release pushed to next year

Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are serving life sentenceswithout parole for the 1989 shotgun slayings of their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion, will have to wait until the new year for a decision on their bid for release, with a judge Monday scheduling a hearing on the matter for late January.

Attorneys for the brothers are pursuing various avenues in hopes of securing their release from prison, contending that new evidence backs the Menendez's claims that they were sexually abused by their father.

During a hearing in Van Nuys, a judge heard testimony from two of the brothers' aunts, both of home pleaded for their release from prison. Judge Michael V. Jesic made no immediate decision, instead scheduling a two-day hearing for Jan. 30-31 to hear the various arguments in the case.

That hearing will replace a previously scheduled Dec. 11 hearing, and will also allow newly elected District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who is set to be sworn in next week, more time to review the case. Current District Attorney George Gascón announced last month that he supports the resentencing of the brothers. But Hochman has not yet said whether he will take a similar position in the case, saying he wants the chance to review the voluminous evidence before making a decision.

Erik Menendez, 53, and Lyle Menendez, 56, both attended Monday's hearing in Van Nuys via an audio link from prison in San Diego. The pair were expected to appear via video, but the video link would not function in the courtroom. The brothers did not speak, other than acknowledging they were able to hear the proceeding.

Defense attorney Mark Geragos said after the hearing that it was "quite the moving experience" to hear two of the brothers' aunts make "impassioned pleas with the judge to send the brothers home."

"The judge has now set January 30th and 31st as the days for a ... hearing on the resentencing," Geragos said, adding that the judge has asserted full jurisdiction over the case. "He's going to ... ask for further briefing, and by January 30th or 31st, we're hoping by the end of that or sometime sooner that we will in fact get the brothers released."

Geragos is hoping to have the brothers re-sentenced on the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter based on alleged new evidence of sexual abuse. The pair were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without the chance of parole for killing their parents, Jose and Mary Louise "Kitty," in their Beverly Hills mansion on Aug. 20, 1989.

Pasadena orgs unite to carve turkeys for Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park

Local organizations and businesses teamed up Monday to present Pasadena's Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park.

City officials along with personnel from the Pasadena Convention Center and exclusive food and beverage provider Sodexo Live! cooked and carved 250 turkeys for Union Station Homeless Services’ annual Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park.

The holiday event is now in its 12th year.

"The cherished tradition" of connecting community members to prepare meals continues as city officials and representatives from local organizations gathered at the Pasadena Convention Center this morning to participate," a Monday city statement said.

Event participants included:

- Pasadena Center Operating Company Board Chair and Pasadena Councilmember Tyron Hampton;

- Union Station Homeless Services Board Member Deserae Jones and Vice President of Development Mario

- Sodexo Live! Regional Executive Chef JC Pulido;

- Pasadena Center Operating Company Chief Executive Officer Michael Ross; and - Sodexo Live! General Manager Christina Sherwood.

“We look forward to this event each year during the holiday season,” Ross said in a statement. “We appreciate Union Station Homeless Services’ commitment to the Pasadena community and the essential support

it provides. It’s an honor to collaborate with them to put a warm meal on the table for those experiencing food insecurity.”

In addition to the holiday event, Union Station Homeless Services needs donations and volunteers to support their year-round efforts. City officials suggested shopping the organization's wish list, attending a fundraiser or contributing volunteered time for kitchen shifts and meal deliveries.

Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park started as a community potluck at Central Park and has evolved over the years into a two-week event, officials said. The turkeys prepared by the Pasadena Convention Center and Sodexo Live! are distributed either as reheat-able meals for families to take home or served as a sit-down meal at the Adult Center, 412 S. Raymond Ave.

Doo Dah Parade struts its eccentric stuff in Old Pasadena

Pasadena's yearly celebration of the weird, the Doo Dah Parade, promised and delivered their biggest year yet with the 45th annual procession Sunday.

The parade lineup included more than 100 entries, its largest number ever.

"Taking to the streets will be dozens of inventive, if zany, art cars, mutant vehicles, marching, rocking, and punk bands, and a memorable cast of performance artists, showstoppers, hoofers and crooners, disruptors, political pundits, satirists, absurdists, lone wolves, float makers, and merrymakers," parade officials said prior to the event.

The procession stepped off at 11 a.m. at Raymond Avenue and Holly Street, headed south and turned right onto

Colorado Boulevard, ending at Pasadena Avenue. The parade concluded at about 1 p.m.

An after-party was held at Old Towne Pub, 66 N. Fair Oaks Ave., with live bands and no cover charge. An all-ages after-party was scheduled for Dog Haus Pasadena, 93 E. Green St., which also included live music.

The parade was free to the public, with some street parking available, though organizers also pointed out that the parade route is conveniently located near the Gold Line Memorial Park Station and Pasadena Transit bus stops.

Known as the "twisted sister" of the conventional Rose Parade on Jan. 1, the Doo Dah Parade began as a grassroots event in 1978 to

gain national attention for its eccentric satire. The parade, which has spawned numerous off-beat replicants across the country, is co-produced by Light Bringer Project and the Doo Dah Preservation Society. New entrants this year included The Beatles Reunited, Bob Ross Painting Lesson, Stop Drop and Disco, Mike Dunn Jazz Funeral, The Flat Earth Society, Society for

the Preservation of the Quill Pen, California Jones & the Paraders of the Found Snark and Rocka Chewbacca, an "out of this world Wookiee Rock band."

And organizers promised that "not a rose will be harmed in the making of this parade!"

Company issues voluntary statewide recall on raw milk product

The California Department of Public Health on Sunday warned the public statewide to avoid consuming a specific batch of cream top, whole raw milk produced and packaged by Fresno County-based Raw Farm LLC due to a detection of bird flu virus in a retail sample.

At the state's request, the company issued a voluntary recall of the affected product with lot code 20241109 and best by date of 11/27/2024 printed on the packaging. Consumers should immediately return any remaining raw milk to the store where it was purchased. The CDPH is also notifying retailers to remove the affected product from their shelves.

No illnesses have been reported, but health officials — out of an abundance of caution — said consumers should not consume any of the affected raw milk. Drinking or accidentally inhaling raw milk containing bird flu virus may lead to illness. Touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands after touching raw milk with bird flu virus may also lead to infection.

Symptoms of bird flu infection in humans include eye redness or discharge, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, trouble breathing and fever. Anyone who has consumed voluntarily recalled product, and is experiencing these symptoms, should immedi-

ately contact a health care provider.

State health experts have long warned against consuming raw milk products due to elevated risks of foodborne illness. Outbreaks due to Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, toxin producing E. coli, Brucella, Campylobacter and other bacteria have been reported related to consuming raw dairy products.

Raw milk products are not pasteurized, a heating process that kills bacteria and viruses such as bird flu. Pasteurized milk and milk products are safe to consume because the heating process kills pathogens, including bird flu, that can cause illness, according to health experts.

The County of Santa Clara Public Health Laboratory has been testing raw milk products from retail stores as a second line of consumer protection. The county identified bird flu in one sample of a Raw Milk's product purchased at a retail outlet. The testing was then verified by the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System. Since early October, California has reported 29 confirmed human cases of bird flu, and all but one case came from direct contact with infected dairy cows. No person-to-person spread of bird flu has been detected in California or the U.S. To date, all cases have reported mild symptoms (primarily eye infections).

Thanksgiving food, drink trends revealed by national poll, online ordering data

As the air turns crisp and the anticipation of holiday gatherings begins, it's time to rediscover the foods and festivities that define the season. According to a recent Instacart survey of over 2,000 U.S. adults by The Harris Poll, a hearty 89% plan to celebrate Thanksgiving.

This report explores the trends surrounding Thanksgiving using Instacart purchase data from the 2023 holiday season as well as a recent Harris Poll survey. The festive findings include the most and least popular Thanksgiving dishes, food preferences by region and favorite holiday beverages.

Thanksgiving trends unveiled Thanksgiving grocery shopping and preparation is all about timing. For Instacart customers, the day before the holiday marked the peak for orders, including staple ingredients. However, purchase data from 2023 showed that turkey orders peaked four

days before the big day, giving savvy planners ample time for the birds to thaw. Data also showed the classic duo of turkey and cranberry sauce was top-of-mind for consumers, as the top five Thanksgiving-focused items included whole turkey, cranberries, whole frozen turkey, pumpkin pie and canned cranberries.

Cooking up a storm Cooking duties this year are a shared affair. While 64% of women plan to prepare at least one dish, 57% of men are also taking up the culinary challenge and contributing at least one dish. Equal proportions — 30% of men and 30% of women — plan to cook the entire feast.

Thanksgiving celebrations will also look a bit different this year from generation to generation: Gen X (ages 44-59) are more likely than Gen Z (ages 18-27) or Boomers (ages 60-78) to assume the role of Thanksgiving hosts (42% vs. 32% each),

while Gen Z (66%) and millennials (59%) will fill seats as enthusiastic attendees (vs. 41% Gen X and 43% Boomers).

Gen Z (92%) and millennials (91%) are more likely than Boomers (86%) to celebrate Thanksgiving, while Boomers (14%) are more likely to skip the festivities this year than Gen Z and millennials.

Gen Z (63%), millennials (66%), and Gen X (61%) are all leading Boomers (53%) in planning to cook or prepare food contributions.

How long is too long in the kitchen?

Thanksgiving preparations are no walk in the park, with 62% of those participating in preparing dishes investing four or more hours in prep time. Interestingly, more men (66%) than women (59%) plan to spend four or more hours preparing dishes for Thanksgiving.

Regional contrasts reveal that folks in the Northeast are more likely than those in the West or South to spend

less time cooking, with 45% planning a brisk one- to three-hour prep versus 31% in the West and 34% in the South.

Meanwhile, those in the West are more likely than those in the Northeast to hunker down for the long haul, with half of home cooks in the region planning

to cook for four to six hours (50% vs. 37%). Notably, 10% in the South are ready to engage in marathon 10-hour plus culinary sessions. Cheers to that!

According to the survey, 53% of those age 21+ celebrating Thanksgiving this

year plan to indulge in alcoholic beverages and 8% will opt for nonalcoholic beer or wine with dinner. Instacart purchase data confirms that nonalcoholic drink purchases are on the rise: Between 2019 and 2023, alcohol orders that included

At 3:58 a.m., a caller in the 300 block of South Madison reported that the windows of her vehicle were smashed, and the doors were open. No items were reported missing. This investigation is continuing.

At 6:26 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of El Norte reported her vehicle stolen. This investigation is continuing.

At 8:11 p.m., a business in the 700 block of West Huntington reported a vehicle loitering in the parking lot, and the occupants were littering. Officers arrived and made contact with the occupants. A computer search revealed two of the occupants had warrants for their arrest. They were arrested and taken into custody.

At 9:16 p.m., a caller in the 700 block of South Shamrock reported a subject loitering on the property. Officers arrived and made contact with the subject. The subject was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.

At 10:54 p.m., an officer patrolling the 700 block of Los Angeles saw a vehicle driving recklessly, and a pedestrian was recording the act. The officer conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver and pedestrian. An investigation revealed a loaded gun in the vehicle. The driver and passenger were arrested and taken into custody.

At 12:26 a.m., several call-

ers in the 700 block of California reported a traffic collision. Officers arrived and found a single vehicle had collided with a parked vehicle. Officers made contact with the driver, who displayed symptoms of being under the influence. An investigation determined the driver was under the influence. The driver was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

At 7:28 a.m., a resident in the 1700 block of South Fifth reported damage to her vehicle window and steering column. This investigation is continuing.

At 9:18 a.m., a victim in the 600 block of Linwood reported that personal items and money were stolen from his unlocked vehicle three days prior. This investigation is continuing.

At 11:06 a.m., while patrolling the 1600 block of South Magnolia, an officer was alerted to a felony vehicle in the area. Officers responded, located the vehicle, and made contact with the owner. An investigation revealed the owner had just purchased the vehicle. He was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and taken into custody.

At 3:01 p.m., a traffic collision was reported in the area of May and Foothill. Officers arrived and discovered it was a three-vehicle collision. An investigation revealed the collision was caused by a vehicle that fled the scene. This investigation is continuing.

At 4:12 p.m., a resident in the 300 block of West Lemon reported a neighbor dispute. Officers arrived and made con-

tact with the subjects involved. A computer search revealed one of the subjects was wanted for a parole violation. He was arrested and taken into custody.

At 8:11 p.m., a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain reported a shoplifting incident. Officers arrived and located the suspect nearby, still in possession of the stolen property. A computer search revealed the suspect had a warrant for his arrest. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

At 9:06 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of North Ivy reported that his residence was burglarized. This investigation is continuing.

Nov. 16

At 12:02 a.m., an officer patrolling the 1500 block of South Myrtle saw a theft take place and attempted to make contact with the suspect. When the officer attempted to detain the suspect, he resisted. The suspect was arrested and found to be in possession of someone else's driver's license and credit card. The suspect was taken into custody.

At 2:07 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of East Olive reported a vehicle loitering in the area and playing loud music. Officers arrived and attempted to make contact with the vehicle. As officers approached, the vehicle drove away, committing several vehicle code violations. Officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, who displayed symptoms of intoxication. An investigation determined the driver was under the influence. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sober-

ing period.

At 9:25 a.m., an employee from a store in the 600 block of West Huntington reported a shoplifting. Officers arrived and located a suspect nearby in possession of the stolen property. A computer search revealed she had warrants for her arrest. She was arrested and taken into custody.

At 11:03 a.m., a passerby in the 100 block of West Duarte reported a suspicious person in the roadway. Officers arrived and located the subject nearby. A computer check revealed he had warrants for his arrest. He was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and taken into custody.

At 1:57 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of North Magnolia regarding a welfare check for a male subject. Officers arrived and made contact with the subject. He was not in need of assistance. A computer check revealed he had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

At 2:10 p.m., an employee from a store in the 700 block of East Huntington reported two subjects were in the store possibly shoplifting. The subjects left the store as officers were arriving. Officers made contact with the subjects, who were found to be in possession of the stolen property. A computer search revealed one of them had a warrant. Both subjects were arrested and taken into custody.

At 2:11 p.m., a shoplifting incident from days prior was reported by a store employee in the 700 block of East Huntington. This investigation is continuing.

At 4:23 p.m., employees from a store in the 700 block of East Huntington reported a suspect entered the store and fled with merchandise without paying. This investigation is continuing.

Nov. 17

At 2:17 a.m., an officer patrolling the 1100 block of East Huntington saw a vehicle commit a traffic violation. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver displayed symptoms of being under the influence. A DUI investigation revealed she was under the influence. She was transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period. Her passenger was too intoxicated to care for himself, and he was also arrested and taken into custody.

At 10:21 a.m., several callers in the area of Foothill and Mayflower reported a female subject exposing herself. Officers arrived and located her. A computer search revealed she had a warrant for her arrest. She was arrested and taken into custody.

At 9:31 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of West Duarte regarding a robbery. Officers arrived and made contact with the victim. An investigation revealed the victim pulled into a liquor store parking lot, and as he was exiting his vehicle, a male adult suspect grabbed his phone and forcibly ripped it from the victim's hands. The victim was uncooperative and did not want prosecution. This investigation is continuing.

Nov. 18

At 5:05 a.m., a caller in the area of Huntington and May-

flower reported a vehicle with sparks coming from under it. Officers arrived and located the vehicle driving on its front rim. The driver stated he was unaware the tire was missing from the rim. A DUI investigation revealed the driver was under the influence. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

At 9:54 a.m., employees from a business in the 400 block of Genoa reported the business was vandalized. This investigation is continuing.

At 10:35 a.m., a traffic collision was reported in the area of Evergreen and California. No injuries were reported. The driver who caused the collision was cited at the scene.

At 12:53 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of West Foothill regarding a battery. Officers arrived and made contact with one of the subjects involved. An investigation determined the subjects are known to each other. The subject who remained at the scene was pepper sprayed, while the other subject fled. This investigation is continuing.

At 3:26 p.m., a caller in the 200 block of West Huntington reported a suspicious subject in the area. Officers arrived and determined the subject had stolen merchandise from the location. An employee requested a citizen’s arrest. The subject was arrested and taken into custody.

At 4:30 p.m., a victim walked into the MPD lobby to report his wallet had been stolen from a locker room at a gym. This investigation is continuing.

Long Beach breaks ground on new affordable housing project in Alamitos Beach area

On Nov. 21, the City of Long Beach commemorated the start of construction for 300 Alamitos, an 82-unit affordable housing project in the Alamitos Beach area for low-income seniors and seniors who have experienced homelessness. This five-story community of one-bedroom homes designed by Mercy Housing California will feature a large open space courtyard and recreation area, an indoor lounge and community space, as well as resident support services. The project, located at a former parking lot at its namesake address of 300 Alamitos Ave., will serve qualified older adults ages 55 and older.

The Riverside County EMS Agency has announced the launch of the Prehospital Adult Blood Transfusion program, an initiative that allows Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals to administer blood products in the field. This program, developed in collaboration with Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Bernardino and Ventura counties and the State of California EMS Authority, aims to enhance the quality of pre-hospital care, especially for trauma patients requiring immediate intervention

before arriving at the hospital due to internal bleeding. “The field administration of blood for certain critical trauma patients is a new and growing capability in EMS systems nationally, and we are delighted to support the local EMS agencies leading California in establishing these programs,” stated Dr. Hernando Garzon of the California EMS Authority.

Riverside welcomes Voltu Motor Inc.

Voltu Motor Inc., creators of a new class of commercial electric trucks that are expected to be in great demand across California and the nation, will locate its global headquarters and manufacturing facility in Riverside, with the city receiving 20 of the first vehicles for use in its utilities, streets and parks departments. Voltu plans to establish a manufacturing and research facility capable of producing approximately 14,000 vehicles during their first three years of operations in Riverside. Initially, the company will relocate 20 employees from Argentina and expects to create more than 400 jobs within the next four years, rising to 700 jobs over time, with more than 1,200 indirect jobs being created in supporting industries. The City of Riverside will be the point of sale, meaning that sales taxes from the vehicles will return to the city to help pay for local quality of life improvements. Voltu’s projections anticipate $1.6 billion in revenue from the deployment of over 14,000 trucks.

In partnership with the Superior Court of California and the San Bernardino County Juvenile Court, 70 families celebrated the finalization of their adoptions at the Ontario Convention Center. 2025 Point-In-Time Count planning is underway

San Bernardino County is putting out a call for volunteers to help with the official count of unsheltered individ-

uals on Jan. 23 to collect data that will be used to determine how federal resources will be allocated. As an added enhancement, a special focus for volunteers will be to offer supportive services to the unhoused community in real-time alongside multidisciplinary county teams. Using a web-based app, county employees, community groups, homeless service providers, stakeholders and volunteers will canvass cities, towns and unincorporated communities to count, survey and assist individuals whose primary nighttime residence is in a vehicle, park, abandoned building, transit center, riverbed or other unsheltered location. The information collected from the survey will be shared with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Bill Resh, associate professor of public policy at the University of Southern California, said Trump appears to be following the blueprint set by Project 2025.

“Project 2025 puts into

place principles such as loyalty, first and foremost, to the President as a criterion for placement into these agencies, and often with the intention of undermining those missions.”

Supporters of Presidentelect Trump say voters have given him a mandate to govern as he sees fit. So far, he has nominated people strongly aligned with the oil industry to run the U.S. Interior Department and be Energy Secretary. He has nominated a climate change skeptic to run the Environmental Protection Agency, a television host with no exec-

utive experience as Defense Secretary, an election denier for Attorney General and a vaccine skeptic to run the Department of Health and Human Services.

Resh noted Trump has already suggested using recess appointments to avoid what could be bruising confirmation hearings for some of his nominees.

“His stars are aligned to consolidate executive power and bring what used to be either quasi- or fully independent agencies, that were not subject to political whims, to bring those agencies to heel toward his

policy preferences,” Resh contended.

This year, the U.S. Supreme Court found presidents cannot be prosecuted for most actions in office.

And come January, both houses of Congress will be controlled by allies of President-elect Trump.

New California rebate program launched to cut home energy costs

Anew rebate program

could save California families up to $8,000 on an electric heat pump for home heating and cooling.

The Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program is funded by the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act.

Deana Carrillo, director of the Reliability, Renewable Energy and Decarbonization Incentives Division of the California Energy

Commission, encouraged homeowners to replace their older, natural gaspowered systems.

“More efficient electric heat pumps can lower your energy bills,” Carrillo pointed out. “They’ll also help decarbonize your homes to make sure that the air in your home is cleaner.”

TECH data suggests that the median heat pump HVAC install in CA costs almost $19,000. Families

who make between 80% and 150% of the area median income qualify for a $4,000 rebate and those who make less are eligible for the full $8,000 rebate.

The program fights climate change by reducing reliance on natural gas, a fossil fuel, to heat homes and run power plants. Carrillo stressed more

electric heat pumps should lower California’s carbon emissions.

Rite Aid workers ratify 3-year contract

The union representing more than 3,500 Rite Aid workers across SouthernCaliforniavoted to ratify a new three-year contract with the company Sunday, union officials said.

The deal was reached last week after about four months of bargaining.

"Today, by ratifying this contract, Rite Aid workers securedhistoricwage increases for every member, protected our health benefits and secured our pension," according to a statement put out by seven United Food and Commercial Workers locals.

"After countless hours

at the bargaining table, the hard-working UFCW members stood together for their families and each other and won a strong contract. This contract is a concrete and direct result of the tireless work of the memberled bargaining committee and our members' engagement in the fight. Our members are fighting for a more promising future, and this contract will help to achieve that goal," the statement continued.

Rite Aid officials did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

According to the UFCW, the contract includes:

-- Significant wage

New coach Lynne Roberts sets lofty goals for Sparks

Newly hired coach Lynne Roberts said Thursday the Sparks "should be the best organization, program, team," in the WNBA and that Los Angeles should be the league's "premier market."

"I'm a competitor at heart, so I'm up for the challenge," Roberts said at her introductory news conference at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday afternoon.

"I know there's going to be peaks and valleys ... but I'm here to do what I can and do my part to win as many games as we can and get that championship culture back here."

Roberts' hiring to succeed Curt Miller was announced Tuesday. The Sparks announced on Sept. 24 they had "mutually agreed to part ways" with Miller, five days after completing his second season with a league-worst 8-32 record.

Roberts is the Sparks' third permanent coach since they last reached the WNBA playoffs in 2020. They last won the WNBA Finals in 2016,

last reached the WNBA Finals in 2017 and last won a playoff game in 2019.

Roberts, 49, had coached the University of Utah since the 2015-16 season, guiding the Utes to a 165-116 record and berths in the NCAA tournament each of her final three full seasons. The team was off to a 3-1 start when she resigned to accept the Sparks' position.

"I've been asked, `Why are you doing this?"' Roberts said. "Why wouldn't I do this ... when what I want (is) to be the premier market in the WNBA? We've got the support. I trust Eric (Holoman) and the ownership group and what they're saying, where they want our program to be, where they want this organization to go."

Holoman, the team's governor and managing partner, called Roberts "an outstanding coach and leader."

"We are thrilled to bring her decades of winning coaching experience to our organization," Holoman said in a statement. "Through our

comprehensive international search, Lynne's modern view of basketball, her communication skills, and ability to build relationships made her the right choice for the role."

General manager Reagan Pebley said the team conducted an "exhaustive ... global search" for a coach and "I've racked up a lot of frequent flyer miles."

to identify the pillars that we were looking for in the head coach, we were very, very clear," Pebley said. "There were three main things. For the past three seasons, Utah led NCAA Division I in 3-point shots, was second in overall offensive rating and third in effective field goal percentage. In the 2023-24 season, 95% of the Utes' shots were either 3-point shots, at the rim or in free throw lane.

Roberts began her coaching career in 1997 as a student assistant at Seattle Pacific immediately after concluding her playing career with the Falcons, while pursuing a master's degree in athletic administration. She remained on their staff as an assistant coach after receiving her master's degree in 2000. She was the coach at Chico State from 2002 through 2006, guiding the Wildcats to an

86-31 record and berths in the NCAA Division II tournament each season, including reaching the Sweet 16 and Final Four her final two seasons.

Roberts became a Division I coach for the first time in 2006 when she was hired by Pacific. The Tigers had losing records in each of her first five seasons, but winning records in each of her last four, reaching the Women's National Invitation Tournament each time.

Roberts was selected as the Big West Coach of the Year for the 2012-13 season, when Pacific won the conference's regular-season championship and was 27-8 after going 18-14 the previous season. Her career record at Pacific was 135-144.

Miller was 25-55 in his two seasons as the Sparks' coach. He succeeded Derek Fisher, who was fired after the team started the 2022 season with a 5- 7 record. Fred Williams coached the team to a 8-16 record as interim coach for the remainder of that season.

Americans spend less time outside home post-COVID, UCLA study reveals

Arecent study by UCLA indicates that Americans are spending more time inside their homes and far less time outside.

Other studies — like a survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics — indicate that this could be a post-COVID-19 phenomenon. At the same time, there are studies that also suggest that Americans were spending more time alone even before the pandemic.

A study published on Oct. 30 by Brian D. Taylor and Sam Speroni of the UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies and Eric A. Morris of Clemson University revealed that people are spending almost an hour less outside their homes each day compared to 2019. People are also reducing travel time by about

12 minutes daily.

The team delved into the American Time Use Survey data, which is collected by the federal government. They examined how over 30,000 people spent their days from 2019 to 2023, excluding 2020. They omitted 2020 due to the COVID-19 disrupted data gathering that year. Taylor and his colleagues believe this new homebody lifestyle is here to stay, as a side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. They're advocating for a fresh look at how cities are planned and moves are made.

On the other hand, another study done by Patrick Sharkey, a professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton, indicated that the time spent by Americans at home increased by one hour and 39 minutes a day, or 10%, from 2003 through 2022. It's a trend that rose sharply during the pandemic and had yet to return to more typical levels by 2022. Sharkey seemed to suggest that Americans preferred staying indoors even before the first stay-athome orders were enacted.

In his influential 2000 book, "Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community," political scientist Robert D. Putnam investigated this trend. He posited that Americans had exchanged their social institutions, including churches, social clubs, and bowling leagues, for social isolation, which had negative repercussions for society.

As per Sharkey's research, people who were employed exhibited a significant increase in the amount of time they spent at home, as did those with higher incomes and levels of education. CASE NO.: GENERAL PLAN AMENDMENT 23-01 AND ZONE CHANGE 23-01– The 2021-2029 Housing Element was adopted by the Rosemead City Council on January 11, 2022, and certified by the California Department of Housing and Community Development on August 1, 2022. Rezoning is required by State law to ensure that there are enough sites with adequate densities to meet the housing need in the upcoming eight years. During the Housing Element process, the City assessed a number of sites in its Sites Inventory that would be able to accommodate the City’s assigned 2021 Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) of 4,612 units (1,154 very low, 638 low, 686 moderate, and 2,134 above moderate). With units entitled and under review, as well as anticipated ADUs, the City has adequate capacity for its RHNA units. In addition, the City has the option to pursue additional sites suitable for residential development through rezoning opportunities on City Identified Parcels. The City identified ten candidate sites that may provide opportunity to accommodate the shortfall housing need to comply with SB 166 (no net loss), if rezone efforts were undertaken (Housing Element Rezoning Efforts). With a lower income RHNA of 1,792 units, vacant and underutilized sites, including three sites for potential rezoning, provide additional capacity to satisfy the RHNA requirement while providing a buffer of 485 units for a total of 2,277 low/very low-income units. The rezoned sites will meet the requirements of Government Code §65583.2, including but not limited to a minimum density of 20 units per acre, minimum site size to permit at least 16 units on site, and zoned to allow ownership and rental housing by-right in which at least 20 percent of the units are affordable to lower income households. The proposed action includes changes to the City’s General Plan and Zoning Map to implement the City’s certified Housing Element. 4th quarter touchdown gives USC 19-13 victory over UCLA, bowl eligibility

Jayden Maiava threw a 4-yard pass to Ja'Kobi Lane with 6 minutes, 55 seconds to play for USC's lone touchdown in a 19-13 victory over UCLA at the Rose Bowl Saturday evening that made the Trojans bowl eligible and ended the Bruins' bowl hopes.

The touchdown came one play after sophomore receiver Makai Lemon caught a lateral from Maiava and threw a 39-yard pass to Kyron Hudson. The pass was Lemon's first of his 18-game college career.

UCLA had the ball twice after the touchdown. Its first drive ended when quarterback Ethan Garbers was stopped for no gain when he ran up the middle on a fourth-and-1 play from the Bruins' 34-yard line.

The Trojans then drove 21 yards on eight plays, culminating with Michael

Lantz's 30-yard field goal with 2:09 left.

Garbers threw four consecutive incomplete passes when UCLA regained possession and USC (6-5, 4-5 in Big Ten Conference play) ran out the final 1:46.

The Bruins outgained the Trojans, 376 yards to 346 and led 30:57-29:03 in time of possession. USC led 17-16 in first downs.

The Trojans converted 4 of 14 third downs and 1 of 2 fourth downs. UCLA (4-7, 3-6) converted 3 of 11 third downs and none of their three fourth downs.

Maiava completed 19 of 35 passes for 221 yards and the one touchdown in the redshirt sophomore's second start in his first season at USC after spending the first two years of his college career at UNLV. He did not throw an interception and was

sacked twice.

Garbers, a redshirt senior, completed 20 of 29 passes for 265 yards, including a 10-yard pass to Moliki Matavo with 9:37 left in the third quarter for the Bruins' lone touchdown.

Mateen Bhaghani kicked a 29-yard field goal on the next possession for UCLA.

Lantz kicked 19-, 23- and 22-yard field goals in the first half for the Trojans before a crowd announced at 59,473.

Bhaghani opened the scoring with a 51-yard field goal on the game's first drive.

The Trojans regain possession of the Victory Bell with the victory. The 295-pound bell that originally hung atop a Southern Pacific freight locomotive and was given to the UCLA Alumni Association in 1939. In 1941, it was taken by a group of USC students who hid it in a variety of locations for more than a year.

Following an intervention by school administrators, the student body presidents of both schools signed an agreement in 1942 providing that the winner of the football game would keep possession for the next year, a tradition that has continued, along with painting the bell's carriage in the school color of the winner.

LA's vegan community seeks Thanksgiving alternatives

For millions of Americans, Thanksgiving is a celebration of gratitude and time spent with loved ones, but for millions of turkeys, of course, it's something far different.

Despite the nearubiquity of turkeys on Thanksgiving plates, Southland families who want to celebrate the holidays guiltfree do have an impressive number of other meal choices.

The most popular vegan option for holiday dinners is Tofurkey, an Oregonbased company founded in 1980 by self-described teacher, naturalist and hippie Seth Tibbott. The company debuted its tofubased Holiday Roast in 1995. Tofurkey roasts and other products are available at many California supermarkets, and can also be found online for as little as $15.

Several other companies have followed suit and developed their own vegan roasts in recent years, including Gardein, Field Roast, Quorn, Country Life and Trader Joe's.

Veg Out magazine has a guide on where to pick up a vegan holiday meal in Los Angeles on its website at vegoutmag.com. The website also offers holiday recipes.

Los Angeles' largest in-person vegan event for the holiday is the Vegan Thanksgiving Potluck in the Cheviot Hills area south of Century City. It takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at 2551 Motor Ave., near the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center. Held annually for more than 20 years, the potluck typically draws hundreds of people, and features live music and an open mic.

Other Southland animal rights groups are busy marking the holiday in a number of ways.

Farm Sanctuary is conducting its 38th annual Adopt A Turkey Project. For a donation of $35, people can symbolically adopt a rescued turkey or sponsor

an entire flock for $135, allowing the animals to live out their natural lives at one of the group's spacious farms. Donors who give $35 receive an adoption certificate with a photo of either Serena "The Swiftie," Thelma "The Tender Heart," Freyja "The Introvert" or Ferris "The Underdog."

The sponsorships support the care of the rescued birds, as well as the organization's other work at its farms in Acton and Watkins Glen, New York, to rescue animals in need, educate consumers about the realities of the nation's food system, and advocate for an end to factory farming.

The group has been sponsoring the program since 1986, and several of the turkeys' stories can be viewed at www.farmsanctuary.org/adopt-a-turkey.

The organization has petitioned President Joe Biden to give the turkeys pardoned at this year's White House ceremony a "real pardon" by sending them to one of Farm Sanctuary's locations.

"Celebrating Thanksgiving without the body of a turkey in the middle of the table reflects a growing

movement away from factory farming cruelty," Farm Sanctuary President and Co-Founder Gene Baur said in a statement provided to City News Service. "When we choose compassionate, plant-based foods, we honor the lives of other animals and engender kinder customs for future generations."

Mercy for Animals, an international animal protection nonprofit headquartered in Los Angeles, has launched its "Pardon A Turkey" campaign, in which anyone who pledges to pardon a turkey for the holidays will get a free copy of the group's holiday cookbook, "Plant-Powered Holidays: Delicious Recipes for a Turkey-Free Table."

The group is also promoting a ChooseVeg guide as a resource for incorporating plant-based foods into holiday meals. It can be found at https:// chooseveg.com/.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is also promoting a no- turkey pledge for Thanksgiving, in the sixth year of its "ThanksVegan" campaign. More information, including recipes, can be found at peta.org/thanksvegan.

Last weekend, the nationwide animal rights group hosted a ThanksVegan gathering at the Kindred Spirits Care Farm animal sanctuary in Chatsworth, and on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, PETA volunteers handed out 100 free vegan roasts at the Americana at Brand in Glendale.

PETA is also offering Tommy the AI Turkey, a friendly ChatGPT-powered kitchen helper who can answer questions like "What can I use instead of butter in stuffing?" and "Where can I buy a vegan turkey?"

Additionally, PETA has produced a family-friendly short holiday film starring Toby the Turkey that is running before screenings of "Moana 2" in Indiana, Minnesota and Kansas to show young moviegoers "that turkeys feel joy, pain, and fear just as humans do."

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 46 million turkeys will be killed for Thanksgiving dinners this year. And many animal rights activists say that even before they're slaughtered, their short lives are filled with pain and fear.

The National Turkey Federation, a group formed in 1940 to market the animals as food, did not reply to a request for comment about the welfare of factoryfarmed turkeys, but the group says on its website that turkeys are "raised in specially designed, environmentally controlled barns that provide maximum protection from predators, disease and weather extremes. Except for breeding and transportation purposes, turkeys can roam freely within their house."

The group further states that "to ensure animal welfare practices are upheld throughout the industry, the National Turkey Federation works closely with America's turkey growers, veterinarians and industry experts to develop and maintain strict Standards of Conduct and Animal Care Guidelines for raising healthy birds in a safe environment at every stage of a turkey's lifecycle."

Some vegans also use Thanksgiving as another opportunity to promote the environmental benefits of a plant-based diet.

"Studies have demonstrated that a turkey produces twice as much emissions as a vegan roast, so by omitting turkey from the table people can cut their carbon footprint in half," said Ellen Dent of Animal Alliance Network, a Sherman Oaks-based group that is part of the worldwide Animal Save Movement.

The top turkey-producing states are Minnesota, North Carolina and Arkansas. California is further down the list, producing 6.2 million turkeys each year, or about 2.8% of the U.S. total, according to the National Turkey Federation.

SECTION 1. Pasadena Municipal Code, Title 10, Chapter 10.45 (Parking Meters), Section 10.45.225 is amended as follows:

10.45.225 – South Lake parking meter zone

A. The South Lake parking meter zone is described as follows:

That certain are of the city of Pasadena, county of Los Angeles, state of California, bounded by the following described courses:

B. Except as provided otherwise by this chapter, an escalating parking meter rate will be in effect and the Director of Transportation shall adjust the base parking meter rate at no less than $1.00 per hour and no greater than $5.00 per hour as permitted by posted parking regulations.

1. The rates shall be based on parking demand, with the goal of reaching occupancy by vehicles at the rate of 70 to 90 percent for parking meter spaces on each block at such times and hours that payment is required;

2. Rate changes will not occur more than once every six months;

3. The Director of Transportation shall set the escalated parking rate to be up to two times the base meter rate for any parking beyond an initial base parking period; and

4. Beginning on July 1, 2025, and on each July 1, thereafter, the maximum rates shall be raised by an amount equal to the change in the consumer price index and rounded down to the nearest quarter of a dollar.

C. The parking meter rate shall be $0.00 for vehicles lawfully displaying a no-fee placard, in a manner consistent with any limitations imposed upon the use of such placard, issued pursuant to Section 10.45.027 of this chapter.

SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify the adoption of this ordinance and shall cause this ordinance to be published in full text.

SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect 30 days from its publication.

Santa Clarita man accused of distributing new deadly synthetic opioid

ASanta Clarita man has pleaded not guilty to a federal charge in what prosecutors believe is the nation's first criminal case involving a death caused by the synthetic opioid protonitazene, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

Benjamin Anthony Collins, 21, was arraigned Wednesday in downtown Los Angeles on one count of distribution of protonitazene resulting in death, said federal prosecutors, who added that the drug is up to three times more powerful than fentanyl.

Collins was arrested Monday. A federal magistrate judge ordered Collins jailed without bond while he awaits a tentative Jan. 14 trial date.

According to the indictment, in the early morning hours of April 19, Collins knowingly and intentionally distributed protonitazene, which resulted in the death of of a 22-year-old Stevenson Ranch resident. In recent years, protonitazene has been sold online and is said to be significantly more potent than fentanyl, which itself is 50 times more powerful than heroin.

Collins allegedly sold the victim pills containing the synthetic opioid and arranged to sell the victim a bulk supply in the future, according to court documents. The victim ingested the pills soon afterward in the front seat of his car and quickly died. The victim's mother later found him dead in the car parked outside her home and called 911.

Collins could face 20 years to life in prison if he is convicted, prosecutors said.

Metro continues ridership rebound with 1M weekday boardings in October

LA Metro is reporting continuedridership gains, with the agency averaging more than 1 million weekday boardings in October and marking the 23rd consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

October's combined bus and rail ridership level reached 86% of its 2019 pre-pandemic figures. Metro's average weekday boardings stood at 83.9% of pre-pandemic levels, while weekend ridership stood at 97.5% of its pre-pandemic level.

The bus system saw 22,498,869 trips in October, a 7.5% increase compared with October 2023. Average weekday bus ridership stood at 804,963 in October, an increase of 684 new riders compared with September.

On the weekend, an average of 545,208 trips were taken on Metro buses on Saturdays, while an average of 450,972 trips were taken on Sundays. Bus ridership for October stood at 95.8% of its October 2019 pre-pandemic level.

Metro credited its bus ridership growth to more riders on its J and G lines. The J line, which runs on dedicated bus lanes on the 10 and 110 freeways from El Monte to San Pedro, rose by 10.6%, and the G Line, which serves the San

Fernando Valley, increased by 4.7% compared with October 2023.

Meanwhile, rail boardings rose by 8.6%, and October's figures stood at 85.1% of their October 2019 pre-pandemic level.

Weekday rail boardings increased by 14.2% yearover-year, and stood at 95.8% of the pre-pandemic level. Weekend ridership exceeded pre-pandemic levels by 3.1%, according to Metro.

On its light rail system, the transit agency saw more riders on its K (Pink), E (Yellow), A (Blue) and C (Green) lines.

Ridership on the K Line, which runs from Expo/ Crenshaw to Redondo Beach, increased by 23% year-over year. The E Line, from East Los Angeles to Santa Monica, saw a 18.5% year-over-year

Cal State Long Beach president announces retirement

President Jane Close Conoley announced Monday she will retire at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

Conoley, the first woman regularly appointed to lead CSULB, has been president of the university since July 15, 2014. She will step down effective June 30.

"In the months to come, I anticipate making many expressions of thanks to this remarkable community," Conoley said in a statement. "Serving as your president has

been the honor of my career and a beautiful capstone for a 49-year professional life I've devoted to education."

In a video message shared with the campus community, she said, "I am filled with gratitude. Through both our trials and triumphs, I've immensely enjoyed being part of this community, and I am so proud of all we've done together."

CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcia issued a statement praising Conoley's work for the university, calling her "an exceptionally skilled, highly

principled and truly visionary leader — a person of wisdom, thoughtfulness, empathy and compassion."

"Thanks in large part to her leadership, Cal State Long Beach has strengthened its position as a powerhouse of social mobility, a beacon of inclusive excellence and a true anchor institution for the region," Garcia said."President Conoley has been innovative and intentional — and highly successful — in her work to create and sustain a more diverse and inclusive campus environment, as evidenced by

the university being named a Center for Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation by the American Association of Colleges and Universities.

"She has expanded Cal State Long Beach's research impact while maintaining the university's laser focus on its students and their success. And the extraordinary success of the recent No Barriers capital campaign — generating more than $313 million of philanthropic investment against a goal of $275 million — clearly shows an institution that has the respect and

growth.

On the A Line, from Azusa to Long Beach, ridership grew 13.3% year-over-year, and the C Line from Norwalk to Aviation/Century saw an increase of 7.1%.

Weekend events continue to drive overall growth on the system, Metro added. Weekend rail ridership exceeded its pre-pandemic level, reaching 103.1%, while weekend bus boardings reached 95.8% of pre-pandemic level.

Additionally, the agency's Low-Income Fare is Easy, or LIFE program, saw an 28% increase year-overyear in October, or 2,042,922 boardings compared with 1,592,478 riders in October 2023.

The program provides free rides or reduced fares to low-income customers.

newly uncovered evidence bolsters defense allegations that the brothers were victims of sexual abuse.

In the court filing, Menendez attorneys pointed to two new pieces of evidence they contend corroborate the brothers' allegations of long-term sexual abuse at the hands of their father — a letter written by Erik Menendez to one of his cousins in early 1989, eight months before the August 1989 killings, and recent allegations by Roy Rosselló, a former member of the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo, that he too was sexually abused by Jose Menendez as a teenager.

Jose Menendez was an executive at RCA Records, which signed Menudo to a recording contract.

In announcing his support for re-sentencing, Gascón noted that given the brothers' ages at the time of the crime, a ruling to downgrade their charges would make them potentially immediately eligible for parole as youthful offenders, even though they have served only about 35 years behind bars.

Court papers filed by the District Attorney's Office note that at the time of the crime, Erik was an 18-yearold who was preparing to attend UCLA in the fall, and Lyle Menendez was a 21-year-old Princeton University student.

The prosecutors wrote that "the childhood abuse and trauma incurred by

both defendants in this case is sufficient to invoke court consideration" under a new law that allows resentencing in certain cases.

"Both men have been incredible contributions to the prison system as a whole and to their fellow inmates on a very personal level. Erik and Lyle Menendez have done and continue to do their good works and contributions, done without any expectation or hope of ever being released," according to the filing. "They have used their time of incarceration well and now show that they are not a risk to public safety. Erik and Lyle Menendez both deserve a lesser sentence."

Interest in the case surged following the release of a recent Netflix documentary and dramatic series.

The Menendez brothers' defense team submitted papers to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting clemency, but the governor said last week he would not make any decision on the request until

Hochman has a chance to review the nearly 35-yearold case.

"The governor respects the role of the district attorney in ensuring justice is served and recognizes that voters have entrusted District Attorney-elect Hochman to carry out this responsibility," a statement from the governor's office said.

"The governor will defer to the DA-elect's review and analysis of the Menendez case prior to making any clemency decisions."

Gascón was handily defeated in his reelection bid by Hochman, a former federal prosecutor who campaigned on a tougher stance against crime. Hochman is set to take office in December. A second Menendez hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11.

During their two highly publicized trials, the brothers did not dispute that they killed their parents, but claimed selfdefense, citing decades of alleged physical and sexual abuse by their father.

LA County denies retaliation against supporter of former Sheriff Villanueva

Attorneys for Los Angeles County have responded to a whistleblower retaliation lawsuit filed by a Sheriff's Department lieutenant who alleges Sheriff Robert Luna has formed a "hit squad" against those who supported former Sheriff Alex Villanueva, saying Luna has never met the plaintiff.

Lt. Shawn O'Donnell's Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit allegations also include sexual and racial harassment, both of which are challenged in new court papers filed by county attorneys on Nov. 18.

"O'Donnell cryptically claims that at the East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station, the captain of the station showed pictures of her breasts to plaintiff, but that is about all that is alleged in this respect as to alleged sexual harassment," the county attorneys state in their pleadings. "There is no claim that she made inappropriate sexual comments, that she made any type of graphic gestures or sexual innuendos or that anything happened to his employment because of his gender."

O'Donnell, who is white, also alleges that Chavez, a Latina, racially harassed him, but states no allegations as to how, according to the county's lawyers' court papers.

The county attorneys further state in their court papers that what is more "mystifying" is O'Donnell's allegation that Luna's chief of staff, a white male, also sexually harassed him while once again providing no concrete facts.

In addition, O'Donnell makes no allegations that he interacted with Luna or that the sheriff even knew who he is, according to the county attorneys' court papers.

According to O'Donnell's suit filed last Dec. 11, Luna and members of his administration have formed a "hit squad" to retaliate against Villanueva backers within

their department and they have been supported by the Board of Supervisors.

"Under Luna's administration, systemic retaliation, harassment and race-based discrimination have thrived in the LASD," O'Donnell's court papers state. "Luna and his loyalists, including key members of his transition team, have targeted individuals seen as former Sheriff Villanueva's allies and those defending against claims of public corruption linked to Luna's political backers."

O'Donnell believes his chances for career advancement have been "adversely affected and irreparably harmed," the plaintiff's court papers state.

According to the suit and a claim filed as a forerunner of O'Donnell's legal action, the 45-year-old plaintiff was a vocal and known proponent of Villanueva in the months before the Nov. 8, 2022 election.

O'Donnell participated in several Villanueva campaign events, appeared on television on the incumbent's behalf, volunteered at the Villanueva campaign headquarters and posted videos in support of Villanueva on the social media, according to the plaintiff's court papers.

O'Donnell was also outspoken about his criticisms of Luna, the retired Long Beach Police Department chief who defeated Villanueva in the incumbent's reelection bid, O'Donnell's court papers state.

A month before the election, O'Donnell was transferred from the East Los Angeles Station to the Narcotics Bureau, Detective Division, with an effective date of Dec. 11, 2022, the plaintiff's court papers state.

However, shortly after Luna was elected, O'Donnell was notified that Luna was cancelling his move to the Narcotics Bureau, O'Donnell's court papers state.

O'Donnell was not given an explanation why his transfer and that of another Villanueva supporter were stopped by Luna, so he filed a grievance alleging political retaliation and a claim with the state, the plaintiff's court papers further state.

"Mr. O'Donnell was singled out by the sheriff's department for supporting the incumbent sheriff and criticizing the new sheriff and his transfer was cancelled by the new sheriff as a result of political retaliation," the plaintiff's court papers state.
