Museum of Riverside to conclude centennial year with exhibit, gala

The Museum of Riverside is rounding out its centennial anniversary series — "100 Programs for 100 Years" — with a special exhibition and gala celebration next month.

"Dear Riverside, a letter to our first love" explores the century-long process of assembling "a collection to reflect a community," according to a city statement on Friday. The exhibition is visible through Jan. 5 at the Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties, 3855 Market St.

Officials noted "100 Programs for 100 Years" involved "community cultural partners and has taken the Museum to all corners of the city."

The centennial celebration culminates Dec. 12 with a gala at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium, 3845 Mission Inn Ave., which like the museum also originated

in the 1920s. The gala is set to feature gourmet dining, world-class entertainment and a live auction.

"This event will be a celebration of Riverside’s rich history and a toast to its vibrant future," according to the statement.

Tickets are on sale until Dec. 1 via givebutter.com/ MoR100thAnniversaryGala or by emailing cdowning@ riversideca.gov.

"In 1924, Riverside had an estimated population of just 25,000 people when its forward-looking city leaders founded a museum for the city," according to the city statement. "Few cities, particularly among those in the western states, were as future-focused as Riverside.

"The museum of nature, history, and culture now known as the Museum of Riverside was founded during a period of nationwide entrepreneurial spirit, optimism,

and opportunity, and it grew with the changing times. Today, its collections and programs aim to celebrate local achievements, reflect local passions, enrich generations of pre-K through 12 schoolchildren, and provide lifelong learning in a city that is a leader in providing a high quality of life," officials said.

The museum began with seed money from Riverside resident Mary Elizabeth Rumsey in memory of her husband Cornelius Earle Rumsey. This museum's starting collection of art and artifacts by the region's Indigenous cultures spawned "a century of gifts donated by community members that reveal the donors’ belief that the entire community deserved to share in, learn about, and appreciate the area’s natural, cultural, and historical treasures," officials said.

The museum's collection

highlights include natural history resources such as the Clark Herbarium, regional archives of photographs and drawings by local architects plus historic structures such as Heritage House and Harada House.

“Enthusiasm for what our fellow human beings accomplish and value lies at the core of every great museum collection," museum Director Robyn G. Peterson said in a statement.

"The Museum of Riverside is proud to be looking forward to an expanded new downtown building where this city’s enthusiasm for its past, present, and future — expressed in what residents make, collect, know, and save — will be celebrated.”

Officials said they expect the museum to continue to grow and evolve in its second century guided by involvement from the city's "unique and diverse community."

AMoreno Valley mother and father were behind bars Saturday on suspicion of murder, torture and child abuse in the death of their 10-year-old adoptive son, authorities said.

The boy's health declined within hours and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Sheriff's officials said the initial investigation revealed signs of possible neglect and abuse. The department's Central Homicide Unit was requested and assumed the investigation.

Man admits sexually assaulting teens in Elsinore

21-year-old man who engaged in sex acts with two teenage girls in Lake Elsinore pleaded guilty Thursday to felony charges.

Emilio Esteban Ronquillo of Riverside admitted oral copulation of a minor and committing a felony offense while on bail under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. In exchange for his admissions, prosecutors agreed to drop two related charges against Ronquillo.

Superior Court Judge Stephen Gallon scheduled a sentencing hearing for Jan. 22 at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta. The specified term of imprisonment under the plea deal is four years, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Ronquillo remains free on a $30,000 bond.

According to sheriff's Sgt. Robert Thomas, last December, deputies at the Lake Elsinore station received reports of a sexual assault on a runaway girl, identified in court documents only as Jane Doe.

The investigation resulted in allegations that Ronquillo had facilitated the victim's flight and "harbored the juvenile for two days before returning the victim home," Thomas said.

He said deputies arrested the defendant for his alleged assault on the teenager, but Ronquillo was able to post bond and was released from custody around the start of the year.

"In January, another juvenile victim came forward

and disclosed (she was) a victim of sexual assault by Ronquillo," the sergeant said. No details were released concerning how the defendant had come into contact with the second girl, identified in documents only as

business.

Ronquillo has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.

Company issues voluntary statewide recall on raw milk product

The California Department of Public Health on Sunday warned the public statewide to avoid consuming a specific batch of cream top, whole raw milk produced and packaged by Fresno County-based Raw Farm LLC due to a detection of bird flu virus in a retail sample.

At the state's request, the company issued a voluntary recall of the affected product with lot code 20241109 and best by date of 11/27/2024 printed on the packaging. Consumers should immediately return any remaining raw milk to the store where it was purchased. The CDPH is also notifying retailers to remove the affected product from their shelves.

No illnesses have been reported, but health officials — out of an abundance of caution — said consumers should not consume any of the affected raw milk. Drinking or accidentally inhaling raw milk containing bird flu virus may lead to illness. Touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands after touching raw milk with bird flu virus may also lead to infection.

Symptoms of bird flu infection in humans include eye redness or discharge, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, trouble breathing and fever. Anyone who has consumed voluntarily recalled product, and is experiencing these symptoms, should immedi-

ately contact a health care provider.

State health experts have long warned against consuming raw milk products due to elevated risks of foodborne illness. Outbreaks due to Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, toxin producing E. coli, Brucella, Campylobacter and other bacteria have been reported related to consuming raw dairy products.

Raw milk products are not pasteurized, a heating process that kills bacteria and viruses such as bird flu. Pasteurized milk and milk products are safe to consume because the heating process kills pathogens, including bird flu, that can cause illness, according to health experts.

The County of Santa Clara Public Health Laboratory has been testing raw milk products from retail stores as a second line of consumer protection. The county identified bird flu in one sample of a Raw Milk's product purchased at a retail outlet. The testing was then verified by the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System. Since early October, California has reported 29 confirmed human cases of bird flu, and all but one case came from direct contact with infected dairy cows. No person-to-person spread of bird flu has been detected in California or the U.S. To date, all cases have reported mild symptoms (primarily eye infections).

Thanksgiving food, drink trends revealed by national poll, online ordering data

As the air turns crisp and the anticipation of holiday gatherings begins, it's time to rediscover the foods and festivities that define the season. According to a recent Instacart survey of over 2,000 U.S. adults by The Harris Poll, a hearty 89% plan to celebrate Thanksgiving.

This report explores the trends surrounding Thanksgiving using Instacart purchase data from the 2023 holiday season as well as a recent Harris Poll survey. The festive findings include the most and least popular Thanksgiving dishes, food preferences by region and favorite holiday beverages.

Thanksgiving trends unveiled Thanksgiving grocery shopping and preparation is all about timing. For Instacart customers, the day before the holiday marked the peak for orders, including staple ingredients. However, purchase data from 2023 showed that turkey orders peaked four

days before the big day, giving savvy planners ample time for the birds to thaw. Data also showed the classic duo of turkey and cranberry sauce was top-of-mind for consumers, as the top five Thanksgiving-focused items included whole turkey, cranberries, whole frozen turkey, pumpkin pie and canned cranberries.

Cooking up a storm Cooking duties this year are a shared affair. While 64% of women plan to prepare at least one dish, 57% of men are also taking up the culinary challenge and contributing at least one dish. Equal proportions — 30% of men and 30% of women — plan to cook the entire feast.

Thanksgiving celebrations will also look a bit different this year from generation to generation: Gen X (ages 44-59) are more likely than Gen Z (ages 18-27) or Boomers (ages 60-78) to assume the role of Thanksgiving hosts (42% vs. 32% each),

while Gen Z (66%) and millennials (59%) will fill seats as enthusiastic attendees (vs. 41% Gen X and 43% Boomers).

Gen Z (92%) and millennials (91%) are more likely than Boomers (86%) to celebrate Thanksgiving, while Boomers (14%) are more likely to skip the festivities this year than Gen Z and millennials.

Gen Z (63%), millennials (66%), and Gen X (61%) are all leading Boomers (53%) in planning to cook or prepare food contributions.

How long is too long in the kitchen?

Thanksgiving preparations are no walk in the park, with 62% of those participating in preparing dishes investing four or more hours in prep time. Interestingly, more men (66%) than women (59%) plan to spend four or more hours preparing dishes for Thanksgiving.

Regional contrasts reveal that folks in the Northeast are more likely than those in the West or South to spend

less time cooking, with 45% planning a brisk one- to three-hour prep versus 31% in the West and 34% in the South.

Meanwhile, those in the West are more likely than those in the Northeast to hunker down for the long haul, with half of home cooks in the region planning

to cook for four to six hours (50% vs. 37%). Notably, 10% in the South are ready to engage in marathon 10-hour plus culinary sessions. Cheers to that!

According to the survey, 53% of those age 21+ celebrating Thanksgiving this

year plan to indulge in alcoholic beverages and 8% will opt for nonalcoholic beer or wine with dinner. Instacart purchase data confirms that nonalcoholic drink purchases are on the rise: Between 2019 and 2023, alcohol orders that included

California expert: Trump working to greatly expand presidential power

California good governanceexpertsare warning the expansion of presidential power under a second Trump administration could cast aside expertise and the public good to further purely political aims.

President-electDonald Trump has nominated multiple candidates known more for their personal support for him than for relevant expertise.

Bill Resh, associate professor of public policy at the University of Southern California, said Trump appears to be following the blueprint set by Project 2025.

“Project 2025 puts into

place principles such as loyalty, first and foremost, to the President as a criterion for placement into these agencies, and often with the intention of undermining those missions.”

Supporters of Presidentelect Trump say voters have given him a mandate to govern as he sees fit. So far, he has nominated people strongly aligned with the oil industry to run the U.S. Interior Department and be Energy Secretary. He has nominated a climate change skeptic to run the Environmental Protection Agency, a television host with no exec-

utive experience as Defense Secretary, an election denier for Attorney General and a vaccine skeptic to run the Department of Health and Human Services.

Resh noted Trump has already suggested using recess appointments to avoid what could be bruising confirmation hearings for some of his nominees.

“His stars are aligned to consolidate executive power and bring what used to be either quasi- or fully independent agencies, that were not subject to political whims, to bring those agencies to heel toward his

policy preferences,” Resh contended.

This year, the U.S. Supreme Court found presidents cannot be prosecuted for most actions in office.

And come January, both houses of Congress will be controlled by allies of President-elect Trump.

New California rebate program launched to cut home energy costs

Anew rebate program

could save California families up to $8,000 on an electric heat pump for home heating and cooling.

The Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program is funded by the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act.

Deana Carrillo, director of the Reliability, Renewable Energy and Decarbonization Incentives Division of the California Energy

Commission, encouraged homeowners to replace their older, natural gaspowered systems.

“More efficient electric heat pumps can lower your energy bills,” Carrillo pointed out. “They’ll also help decarbonize your homes to make sure that the air in your home is cleaner.”

TECH data suggests that the median heat pump HVAC install in CA costs almost $19,000. Families

who make between 80% and 150% of the area median income qualify for a $4,000 rebate and those who make less are eligible for the full $8,000 rebate.

Get more information at Tech Clean California’s page for the H-E-E-H-R-A program.

The program fights climate change by reducing reliance on natural gas, a fossil fuel, to heat homes and run power plants. Carrillo stressed more

electric heat pumps should lower California’s carbon emissions.

“We need to be looking at using energy more efficiently,” Carrillo asserted. “That will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, both locally in your home and in our effort to fight climate change nationally.”

The state rolled out a program in October benefiting multifamily households. California expects to give out $15,000 rebates for single-family and multifamily house-

alcohol orders that included nonalcoholic drinks jumped by 157% during the week leading up to Thanksgiving. This shift likely mirrors the growing popularity of the "sober curious" movement, as more people seek out ways to celebrate without alcohol.

The generational divide: Mac and cheese vs. stuffing

Tradition reigns supreme when it comes to Thanksgiving, with three in four Americans planning to celebrate Thanksgiving (75%) preferring traditional dishes. However, there are generational differences on what dishes are considered fan favorites — Gen Z shows an affinity for macaroni and cheese (63%) and mashed potatoes (67%), ranking these dishes among their favorites, while Boomers are most likely to rank macaroni and cheese among their least favorites (27%).

On the other hand, the Boomer generation is quite fond of stuffing (76%) and mashed potatoes (69%), ranking the comfort foods among their top favorites, while Gen Z is most likely to rank stuffing as their least favorite (21%). This difference in opinion might indicate a shift in what future generations may view as a Thanksgiving musthave for their dinner spread.

Turkey takes top spot

Though many claim Thanksgiving is "all about the sides," the survey insights show people like to come for the main event. Turkey is the most popular Thanksgiving dish for 74% of Americans, with mashed potatoes (67%) and stuffing (64%) securing second and third places, respectively. Sadly for cranberry fans, cranberry sauce is the No. 1 least favorite dish for over a quarter of Americans (27%).

Here are the top five most popular and least popular Thanksgiving sides, according to this survey: Polarizing sides or

regional delights?

Culinary preferences — especially among some of the least favorite dishes nationally — vary in popularity from region to region.

Apple pie is most favored in the Northeast, with 50% listing the dish as their top favorite compared with 42% in the South and 39% in the Midwest and West. And while pecan pie was tied for one of the least favorite Thanksgiving dishes across the country, it finds an enclave of support in the South, with 40% wanting to add it to their dessert plate compared with 24% in the Northeast, 26% in the Midwest and 27% in the West.

Green bean casserole is a favorite for both Southerners and Midwesterners, with 43% of each group ranking it as one of their top dishes. Westerners, perhaps leaning into their health-conscious reputation, are more likely

While candied yams with marshmallows is a quintessentially Southern-inspired dish, 2023 purchase data shows the possible appeal of this side across the country, resonating deeply across the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains and South.

Regional flavors and holiday traditions shape Thanksgiving plans

Regional preferences help shape holiday meals — whether it's the Northeast's preference for apple pie or the South's love for green bean casserole. These patterns not only reveal the diverse culinary landscapes across the country but also offer valuable insights for retailers and consumers alike, showcasing the unique tastes that define Americans' holiday experiences.

New coach Lynne Roberts sets lofty goals for Sparks

Newly hired coach Lynne Roberts said Thursday the Sparks "should be the best organization, program, team," in the WNBA and that Los Angeles should be the league's "premier market."

"I'm a competitor at heart, so I'm up for the challenge," Roberts said at her introductory news conference at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday afternoon.

"I know there's going to be peaks and valleys ... but I'm here to do what I can and do my part to win as many games as we can and get that championship culture back here."

Roberts' hiring to succeed Curt Miller was announced Tuesday. The Sparks announced on Sept. 24 they had "mutually agreed to part ways" with Miller, five days after completing his second season with a league-worst 8-32 record.

Roberts is the Sparks' third permanent coach since they last reached the WNBA playoffs in 2020. They last won the WNBA Finals in 2016,

last reached the WNBA Finals in 2017 and last won a playoff game in 2019.

Roberts, 49, had coached the University of Utah since the 2015-16 season, guiding the Utes to a 165-116 record and berths in the NCAA tournament each of her final three full seasons. The team was off to a 3-1 start when she resigned to accept the Sparks' position.

"I've been asked, `Why are you doing this?"' Roberts said. "Why wouldn't I do this ... when what I want (is) to be the premier market in the WNBA? We've got the support. I trust Eric (Holoman) and the ownership group and what they're saying, where they want our program to be, where they want this organization to go."

Holoman, the team's governor and managing partner, called Roberts "an outstanding coach and leader."

"We are thrilled to bring her decades of winning coaching experience to our organization," Holoman said in a statement. "Through our

comprehensive international search, Lynne's modern view of basketball, her communication skills, and ability to build relationships made her the right choice for the role."

General manager Reagan Pebley said the team conducted an "exhaustive ... global search" for a coach and "I've racked up a lot of frequent flyer miles."

"When Eric and I set out

to identify the pillars that we were looking for in the head coach, we were very, very clear," Pebley said. "There were three main things. We wanted a smart basketball mind that saw the game in a forward thinking way. We wanted somebody that was a developer, a developer of a program, a developer of people, a developer of skill. And when I say develop, I

mean more nurturer.

"That means you have to be a great leader. So that was the third thing we were really looking for, was just an excellent leader, somebody who was transformational, not just to an offense and a defense, but to people, to a community. So with Lynne, I say check, check, check on all of those."

For the past three seasons, Utah led NCAA Division I in 3-point shots, was second in overall offensive rating and third in effective field goal percentage. In the 2023-24 season, 95% of the Utes' shots were either 3-point shots, at the rim or in free throw lane.

Roberts began her coaching career in 1997 as a student assistant at Seattle Pacific immediately after concluding her playing career with the Falcons, while pursuing a master's degree in athletic administration. She remained on their staff as an assistant coach after receiving her master's degree in 2000. She was the coach at Chico State from 2002 through 2006, guiding the Wildcats to an

86-31 record and berths in the NCAA Division II tournament each season, including reaching the Sweet 16 and Final Four her final two seasons.

Roberts became a Division I coach for the first time in 2006 when she was hired by Pacific. The Tigers had losing records in each of her first five seasons, but winning records in each of her last four, reaching the Women's National Invitation Tournament each time.

Roberts was selected as the Big West Coach of the Year for the 2012-13 season, when Pacific won the conference's regular-season championship and was 27-8 after going 18-14 the previous season. Her career record at Pacific was 135-144.

Miller was 25-55 in his two seasons as the Sparks' coach. He succeeded Derek Fisher, who was fired after the team started the 2022 season with a 5- 7 record. Fred Williams coached the team to a 8-16 record as interim coach for the remainder of that season.

Americans spend less time outside home post-COVID, UCLA study reveals

Arecent study by UCLA indicates that Americans are spending more time inside their homes and far less time outside.

Other studies — like a survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics — indicate that this could be a post-COVID-19 phenomenon. At the same time, there are studies that also suggest that Americans were spending more time alone even before the pandemic.

A study published on Oct. 30 by Brian D. Taylor and Sam Speroni of the UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies and Eric A. Morris of Clemson University revealed that people are spending almost an hour less outside their homes each day compared to 2019. People are also reducing travel time by about

12 minutes daily.

The team delved into the American Time Use Survey data, which is collected by the federal government. They examined how over 30,000 people spent their days from 2019 to 2023, excluding 2020. They omitted 2020 due to the COVID-19 disrupted data gathering that year. Taylor and his colleagues believe this new homebody lifestyle is here to stay, as a side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. They're advocating for a fresh look at how cities are planned and moves are made.

About 22 million people worked from home in 2023, according to a Pew Research Center survey. About 39% of people across the country have jobs that allow employees to work from home, at least part of the time. With

more people working from home, UCLA researchers say it's time to rethink how office and store spaces are used.

happening, like more online shopping and remote work. He thinks our cities and transportation need to catch

They suggest relaxing restrictions on converting commercial buildings to housing and increasing curb space for delivery vehicles.

Morris pointed out that COVID-19 just accelerated changes that were already

up with these shifts.

This study could mean significant changes for how people build cities, run buses and trains, and use commercial buildings. Additionally, the authorities might need to rethink their long-term

plans for roads, buildings and zoning laws.

While it's clear that daily routines have changed, the researchers say more information is needed to truly understand how this affects health, social lives and the economy.

On the other hand, another study done by Patrick Sharkey, a professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton, indicated that the time spent by Americans at home increased by one hour and 39 minutes a day, or 10%, from 2003 through 2022. It's a trend that rose sharply during the pandemic and had yet to return to more typical levels by 2022. Sharkey seemed to suggest that Americans preferred staying indoors even before the first stay-athome orders were enacted.

In his influential 2000 book, "Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community," political scientist Robert D. Putnam investigated this trend. He posited that Americans had exchanged their social institutions, including churches, social clubs, and bowling leagues, for social isolation, which had negative repercussions for society.

As per Sharkey's research, people who were employed exhibited a significant increase in the amount of time they spent at home, as did those with higher incomes and levels of education. Rosemead City Notices

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING BEFORE THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROSEMEAD ON DECEMBER 10,

2024

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Rosemead City Council will conduct a public hearing on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 7:00 PM, at Rosemead City Hall, located at 8838 East Valley Boulevard, Rosemead. Remote public comments will be received by calling (626) 569-2100 or via email at publiccomment@cityofrosemead.org by 5:00 p.m. on December 10, 2024. A live phone call option may also be requested by calling the number provided above. All comments are public record and will be recorded in the official record of the City. If you have a request for an accommodation under the ADA, please contact Ericka Hernandez, City Clerk, at (626) 569-2100.

CASE NO.: GENERAL PLAN AMENDMENT 23-01 AND ZONE CHANGE 23-01– The 2021-2029 Housing Element was adopted by the Rosemead City Council on January 11, 2022, and certified by the California Department of Housing and Community Development on August 1, 2022. Rezoning is required by State law to ensure that there are enough sites with adequate densities to meet the housing need in the upcoming eight years. During the Housing Element process, the City assessed a number of sites in its Sites Inventory that would be able to accommodate the City’s assigned 2021 Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) of 4,612 units (1,154 very low, 638 low, 686 moderate, and 2,134 above moderate). With units entitled and under review, as well as anticipated ADUs, the City has adequate capacity for its RHNA units. In addition, the City has the option to pursue additional sites suitable for residential development through rezoning opportunities on City Identified Parcels. The City identified ten candidate sites that may provide opportunity to accommodate the shortfall housing need to comply with SB 166 (no net loss), if rezone efforts were undertaken (Housing Element Rezoning Efforts). With a lower income RHNA of 1,792 units, vacant and underutilized sites, including three sites for potential rezoning, provide additional capacity to satisfy the RHNA requirement while providing a buffer of 485 units for a total of 2,277 low/very low-income units. The rezoned sites will meet the requirements of Government Code §65583.2, including but not limited to a minimum density of 20 units per acre, minimum site size to permit at least 16 units on site, and zoned to allow ownership and rental housing by-right in which at least 20 percent of the units are affordable to lower income households. The proposed action includes changes to the City’s General Plan and Zoning Map to implement the City’s certified Housing Element. The changes are summarized in the Candidate Site Identified to be Rezoned to Accommodate Shortfall Housing Need Table on page 2.

The City’s adopted 2021-2029 Housing Element as well as our implementation efforts can be viewed online at: https://www.cityofrosemead.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=10035075&pageId=17285586

Man sentenced for accidentally killing woman at Woodcrest home

Amanwhoaccidentallykilleda 21-year-old woman during gunplay at a Woodcrest property was sentenced Friday.

Brady Matthew Castillo, 23, of Riverside, pleaded guilty in June to voluntary manslaughter, along with a sentence-enhancing gun-use allegation.

The plea was directly to Riverside County Superior Court Judge Gary Polk, with objection from the District Attorney's Office. Polk did not indicate a potential sentence at the time of the plea.

On Friday, Castillo was sentenced to formal probation for 72 months and 364 days in custody. Castillo has 174 days actual custody plus 174 days of Penal Code 4019 time for a total of 348 days; the remaining balance of 16 days will be served in a Riverside County Sheriff's

Work Release Program for which he must report on or before Dec. 22, according to the DA's office.

Castillo was also ordered to complete 80 hours of community service by Dec. 22, 2025.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit filed by sheriff's Investigator David Sandoval, Castillo was with Isabella Ruiz at an unnamed friend's residence in the 18000 block of Gentian Avenue, near Chicago Avenue, on the night of March 31, 2023, when the shooting occurred.

Sandoval said earlier that day, Castillo had been "hanging out with his friend" when he grabbed a semiautomatic handgun stashed in a drawer at the house and "took selfies," posing with the pistol before handing the gun to his friend and leaving.

"Later that evening

(about 11:45 p.m.), Castillo returned to the same place and was hanging out with Ruiz and the previously noted friend," according to the sheriff's declaration. "Castillo noticed the same firearm from earlier on top of a table in the bedroom. He picked up the firearm with his left hand, racked the slide to the rear, pointed the firearm at Ruiz's face, and three to five seconds later, pulled the trigger, striking her."

Sandoval wrote that Ruiz was sitting in a chair situated at a desktop computer, "looking at Castillo when he pulled the trigger, and neither party said anything to each other."

"Castillo was unaware if the firearm was loaded and assumed it was not," the investigator said.

Castillo's friend called 911 immediately after

the shooting. The victim was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where she died about 90 minutes later.

Castillo told detectives he had not had any "formal

gun training" but realized "the dangerousness of firearms," the affidavit stated.

He was arrested on the afternoon of April 1, 2023, but posted an $80,000 bond and was released

from custody. His bail was revoked three months later when he failed to make a court appearance.

Castillo has no documented prior misdemeanor or felony convictions in Riverside County.

Student of the Month program launches in Corona-Norco USD

Top seniors from all 10 Corona-Norco Unified School District high schools were recognized last week at the first of several Student of the Month events in Riverside County.

A ceremony recognizing the students' achievements took place Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. at Corona High School, 1150 W. 10th St. in Corona. It was co-organized by the Riverside County Office of Education, Corona-Norco USD and the Corona-Norco Council Parent Teacher Association.

The district includes schools in Eastvale, Norco, Corona and Temescal Valley.

“The Student of the Month events are inspirational reminders of the life-changing impact that education has on our students — many of whom have been part of our public schools since they were in Kindergarten and are now only months away from graduating and pursuing their post-secondary dreams and represent our county, our state, and our nation," county Superintendent of Schools Edwin Gomez said in a statement. “I’m excited to launch this excellence recognition program with

our partners in CoronaNorco USD to celebrate their students of the month as we do across Riverside County.”

In multiple areas throughout the county, a variety of community organizations regularly highlight students of the month in individual school districts. From November to April, educators and staff members at each high school in the Corona-Norco district will honor one senior student "based on how they embody character, integrity, a passion for

learning, active involvement in school life, sports, and community service, or have displayed remarkable resilience in the face of life’s challenges while maintaining a commitment to education," according to the Office of Education.

“We are thrilled to partner with RCOE and our wonderful PTA for this Student of the Month program to highlight our incredible students who continue to inspire us with their resilience, determination, and hard work,” school

district Superintendent Sam Buenrostro said in a statement. “Their stories continue to remind us of our why and keep us committed to ensuring every student has the knowledge, skills, motivation, and resilience to thrive in a diverse global community.”

The Corona-Norco Unified Students of the Month are:

- Giovanni Raymond Klaib, Academy of Innovation

- Faoaaai Gatoloai, Centennial High School

- Hannah Hass, Corona High School

- James Glenny, Eastvale STEM Academy

- Andrew Allen, Eleanor Roosevelt High School

- Jared Espinosa, John F. Kennedy Middle College High School

- Jake Javier Ochoa, Lee V. Pollard High School

- Sergio Sanchez Mendez, Norco High School

- Angelique Denali Huerta-Mendez, Orange Grove High School

- Landon Christensen, Santiago High School

Events throughout the school year include:

- Nov. 19 at Corona High School;

- Jan. 21 at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Eastvale;

- March 18 at John F. Kennedy Middle College High School in Norco; and - April 24 at Eagle Glen Golf Course in Corona for the Student of the Year Award ceremony.

In late March, students of the month mat apply for the Student of the Year Award by submitting scholarship applications, officials said. Students of the year will be selected based on "outstanding academic achievements, active participation in high school life, or their inspiring journey of self-improvement and transformation," according to the Office of Education. Platinum ($5,000 or more), gold ($3,000), bronze ($1,500) and table ($500) sponsorship opportunities are available for the events. Nuevo man sentenced to prison for embezzlement scheme

ANuevomanwas sentenced to six years in prison Friday for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from seniors whom he persuaded to give him money to invest in a bogus profit-making venture.

Toby David Smith, 59, was arrested on July 3 following an investigation into a nearly two-year fraud scheme perpetrated by Smith, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Smith was charged with four counts of financial elder abuse, two counts each of money laundering and grand theft and a sentence-enhancing allegation of targeting

multiple individuals in an embezzlement scheme. He pleaded guilty to all four charges.

According to a bailsetting affidavit filed in July by sheriff's Investigator Lance Colmer, Smith came under investigation in April following complaints by the adult daughter of 71-yearold Nuevo resident Cynthia Cadena, who had written a series of checks to the defendant beginning in May 2022.

Colmer alleged Smith convinced Cadena, with whom he attended church, that he could generate windfall profits from an investment vehicle operated by his company,

Reserve Strategies, which was determined to be fake.

Smith made the same claims to other fellow churchgoers, Frank and Stacy Maqueros of Nuevo, and they

agreed to commit funds to Reserve Strategies, the affidavit stated.

According to the narrative, Cadena wrote a total of five checks amounting to

$742,936, while the other victims committed close to $200,000.

"Toby Smith systematically transferred, depleted, spent and laundered nearly all of the money via personal spending at restaurants, travel, bills and retail purchases," Colmer wrote. "He was laundering the money by transferring funds to 10-plus banks and financial platforms. He transferred at least $60,000 of ... (the victims') money to two crypto-currency companies, Coinbase and Binance."

At the outset of the investigation, the detective said he served warrants to freeze assets in the accounts, but

virtually all of the funds were gone.

The affidavit said after Smith was taken into custody, he waived his right to remain silent and agreed to be questioned, admitting "his fiduciary relationship with the victims ... and that he embezzled and spent the victims' money on personal expenses."

"Smith admitted he has little to no outside income and no reliable or consistent income," according to court documents.

Smith has no documented prior felony or misdemeanor convictions in Riverside County.

Palm Springs City Council OKs design, installation money for AIDS memorial

APalm Springs AIDS Memorialproject is moving forward Friday after the City Council unanimously approved the design and funding for its installation.

All four council members at Thursday's meeting voted in favor of the project, allocating $65,000 for its installation, which increased the city's total contribution to $125,000

The memorial, donated to the city by the Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Task Force, was designed by Phillip K. Smith III beginning in 2020, with its conceptual roots tracing back over a decade.

After the City Council approved a prior design in 2021, community feedback contributed to a redesign process earlier this year.

Installation is planned for Downtown Park.

T'Mary Poppins' premieres at Palm Canyon Theatre

hePalmCanyon Theatre premiered its production of "Mary Poppins" Friday.

Adapted from P.L. Travers' original work and the 1964 Disney film, the musical tells the story of the Banks family and their magical nanny.

Se Layne stars in the titular role of the Disney and Cameron Mackintosh musical, with Luke Rainey as Bert, and Eric Stein-Steele, Jenne Carey, Lawrence Hatch and Reagan Kaminsky playing members of the Banks family.

Palm Canyon Theatre's production also features Amanda Burr, Adam Hieter, Terry Huber, Nicole Kennedy, Norma Marcus, Olga Morales, Timothy Rathkey, Tim Steele, Noah Wahlberg and Alden West, in addition to at least 15 other performers.

"We are thrilled that the Palm Springs City Council acted on the recommendation of the Public Arts Commission and approved the Memorial," Task Force spokesperson Dan Spencer said in a statement. "Many visitors and residents of this city will now have an opportunity to appreciate the significance of the AIDS crisis and its tremendous impact on our community."

Mission Inn Hotel & Spa owner Duane Roberts, members of the Riverside City Council and other guests.

Prior to 2023, the ceremonies were traditionally held the day after Thanksgiving, but according to organizers, there's now an emphasis on getting a head start on the season's activities.

Last year's switch-on drew thousands of spectators. Organizers said this year's event will include a free concert, featuring Matt Mauser & The Tijuana Dogs, as well as Richard Goodall, winner of the 2024 "America's Got Talent" contest.

This will be the fest's 32nd anniversary.

Roberts, who inaugu-

rated the tradition in 1992, said in 2023 that the festival consistently draws up to 500,000 visitors over a onemonth span, "all thrilled to watch the display come to life through the Holidays."

Switch-on events were rescinded in November 2020 and November 2021. The 2020 event was prohibited because of the COVID lockdowns, and the city council decided to forgo the 2021 switch-on as a precautionary measure. The ceremony got back on track in 2022.

The nightly fest features the century-old inn bathed in multi-colored hues, with hundreds of animated characters, including elves, toy soldiers, nutcrackers and angels visible on banisters, balconies and ledges.

The musical is directed by Derik Shopinski, with choreography by Nathan Wilson and Derik Shopinski, and music direction by Tim Reed.

Lights Festival

Towering Christmas trees and wooden soldiers traditionally line the way outside and into the hotel, where visitors also encounter a mistletoe measuring 12-by-8 feet.

Ice skating is slated to be available on the Main Street pedestrian mall, and at the corner of Mission Inn Avenue and Lime Street, a Ferris wheel will be in operation. Carolers sometimes make appearances around the hotel.

There will be live musical entertainment weekly, photos with Santa Claus, as well as artisan booths and food vendors up and down the mall. The city festoons light standards and other municipal property with displays and lights.

Jennifer Lopez to get Legend & Groundbreaker Award at Palm Springs fest

Jennifer Lopez will receive the Legend & Groundbreaker Award at Variety's Creative Impact Awards during the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival, the entertainment publication announced Monday.

The actress and singer's recognition comes off the back of her recent performance in "Unstoppable" as Judy Robles, the mother of a collegiate wrestler born with one leg. "Unstoppable" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and is set for a limited theatrical release on Dec. 6.

She will be honored alongside Variety's annual class of 10 Directors to Watch, which this year includes names such as Malcolm Washington ("The Piano Lesson") and Coralie Fargeat ("The Substance").

"Jennifer Lopez is more than a multi-threat talent, first breaking through decades ago as a dancer, then establishing herself as one of the music world's top artists and one of the film world's most popular and acclaimed actors," Steve Gaydos, Variety's executive vice president of content, said in a statement. "This year, she again reminds film fans of her acting prowess and range in the powerful, inspiring awards contender, 'Unstoppable.'"

Lopez's music career started with four consecutive RIAA-certified Platinum albums and the breakout

No. 1 hit "If You Had My Love." Since then, she has garnered 15 billion streams across multiple platforms and co-headlined the Super Bowl halftime show in 2020.

Her Hollywood legacy includes starring roles in "Out of Sight" and "Maid in Manhattan." For the 2019 crime-comedy movie "Hustlers," she garnered Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, in addition to receiving the Spotlight Award at PSIFF the following year.

Lopez made a name for herself on Keenen Ivory Wayans' early 1990s sketch comedy series "In Living Color" before serving as a judge on "American Idol" for five seasons and playing an NYPD detective in "Shades of Blue." She has been an executive producer on multiple shows and co-founded the company Nuyorican Productions, in addition to several other business ventures.

After the ceremony on PSIFF 2025's third day, the film festival will continue through Jan. 13.

Festival of Trees Holiday Fair scheduled to kick off this weekend in Riverside

The Festival of Trees Holiday Fair is scheduled to begin this weekend in Riverside, the Riverside University Health System Foundation announced Monday. The free-admission fair, which benefits the RUHSF, will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Riverside Convention Center, 3637 Fifth St.

More than 40 vendors are expected to attend, selling items such as jewelry, leather goods and holiday decor. Holiday snacks will also be available and nearly 60 uniquely adorned holiday trees will be on display.

The fair also includes activities for kids, including holiday crafts, face painting and photos with Santa.
