Adam Schiff takes oath as California's newest US senator
By Joe Taglieri joet@beaconmedianews.com

Adam Schiff, California's newest U.S. senator, took the oath of office Monday.
Schiff, a Democrat, replaces Sen. Laphonza Butler, who was appointed after longtime Sen. Diane Feinstein's death on Sept. 29, 2023.
Schiff defeated Republican Steve Garvey in the November election, and Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed the former longtime congressman from Burbank to serve the remaining few weeks of the Feinstein-Butler term in office. Schiff, 64, served nearly 25 years in the House of Representatives and won more than 65% of the vote in the Senate race.
"I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve all Californians as their next United States Senator," Schiff said in a statement. "My
family came to the Golden State when I was a child in the hope of finding a strong economy, safe neighborhoods and good schools. And we found all that we could hope for in each of these respects.
"I will be a tireless advocate for Californians in every part of the state and work across the aisle to deliver on day one," Schiff said.
Alex Padilla, California's senior U.S. senator, escorted Schiff across the Senate floor to where Vice President Kamala Harris administered the oath.
“Throughout his career, Adam has been a tireless champion for middle-class families, working to lower the cost of housing and health care while protecting our fundamental freedoms,"
Padilla said in a statement.
"As California and the nation prepare for the challenges ahead, I’m glad to have Adam Schiff as a trusted partner in the Senate."
In a Jan. 3 ceremony, Schiff will be sworn in again for his full six-year term.
"The work ahead of us will not be easy — nothing worth doing ever is," Schiff said. "But my promise is to work every day to deliver results, and make California's future brighter for all of us in this Golden State."
"I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of giants," Schiff said in his statement. "Former Sen. Dianne Feinstein leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of courage and effectiveness. Nobody can ever fill her
immense shoes, but I will continue to be inspired by her example."
Newsom appointed Butler in October 2023 to Feinstein's seat and on Sunday the governor announced that Schiff would take the office Monday "to ensure Californians have their duly elected representative seated as soon as possible."
Butler resigned from the Senate effective Sunday, according to Newsom's office.
Laura Friedman, a former assemblywoman and Glendale City Council member, will succeed Schiff representing the 30th Congressional District. She soundly defeated Republican Alex Balekian in November.
Also on Monday, Schiff said he did not want President Joe
LA County probation chief backs off retirement plans amid juvey hall issues

Los Angeles County's Probation Department chief, who last week announced plans to retire by the end of the year, intends to stay on the job with plans Wednesday to address ongoing issues plaguing the agency's juvenile detention facilities.
"We face significant challenges, but I believe we are building a strong foundation, and there is more to be done," county Probation Chief Guillermo Viera Rosa said in a statement released Tuesday.
"I remain fully committed to working with my staff, partners, county and State leaders to ensure we turn the tide on challenges the department has faced."
Los Angeles County issued a statement supporting Viera Rosa's decision to stay on the job.
"Los Angeles County's Probation Department faces long-running challenges that it is working diligently to address," according to the county statement. "Recognizing the importance of the work now underway, Los Angeles
County is encouraged that Chief Probation Officer Guillermo Viera Rosa has decided to remain in his position and provide the leadership, skills and innovative approaches needed to turn the corner on significant issues, including meeting our continued commitment to achieving full compliance with the Board of State and Community Corrections."
The development came just days ahead of a Thursday deadline imposed by the BSCC to correct persistent substandard conditions and understaffing at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey. As it has done in the past, the BSCC recently deemed the facility unsuitable to house youth detainees, and it gave the county until Thursday to correct deficiencies or move the youth out of the facility. The county, however, has no alternative locations for housing them.
County probation officials are pushing BSCC staff to re-inspect the facility in hopes of winning reversal of the closure order. But a formal

Measles cases reported in Los Angeles, Orange counties

By Joe Taglieri joet@beaconmedianews.com

ocal health officials warned the public last week about recent measles cases in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
A person infected with measles who recently traveled through Los Angeles International Airport prompted a warning from the county Department of Public Health. The individual, who is not an LA County resident, was at the airport while infectious Nov. 27 after arriving on Qatar Airways flight QR 0739 at the Tom Bradley International Airport Terminal B, Gate 155.
Individuals who were at the airport terminal from approximately 12:30-6 p.m. may risk developing measles due to exposure to the infected traveler. Health officials were working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify and notify passengers assigned to specific seats who may have been exposed during the Nov. 27 flight.
“Measles spreads easily through the air and on surfaces and easily between people who are not already protected from it,” LA County Health Officer Muntu Davis said in a Dec. 5 statement. “A person can spread the illness to others before they have symptoms, and it can take seven to 21 days for symptoms to show up after being exposed. Measles can lead to severe disease in young children
and vulnerable adults. The best way to protect yourself and your family from infection is with the highly effective measle vaccine."
Exposed individuals should confirm if they have received a measles vaccine, officials said. People who have not had measles in the past or have not received the vaccine risk of contracting the virus if they have been exposed. Exposed individuals who have been free of symptoms for more than 21 days — in this case Dec. 18 — no longer risk developing measles.
If symptoms develop, health officials advised staying at home and avoiding school, work and large gatherings.
"Call a healthcare provider immediately," according to the health department. "Do not enter a health care facility before calling them and making them aware of your measles exposure and symptoms."
Measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes, health officials said. The virus can remain airborne and on surfaces for many hours after an infected person has left an area. An infected person can spread the virus up to four days before a rash appears and up to four days after its appearance. Breathing contaminated air or contacting
an infected surface, then touching eyes, noses or mouths can lead to a measles infection
Common measles symptoms include high fever above 101 degrees, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, tiny white spots that may appear inside the mouth two or three days after symptoms start and rash three to five days following other signs of illness. The measles rash usually starts at the face and spreads downward to the remainder of the body.
More information from the county is online at ph.lacounty.gov/measles.
Nationwide as of Nov. 21, 280 measles cases have been reported in 2024 — more than double the number of cases reported in all of last year. Additionally, 40% of this year's cases required hospitalization to manage complications or for isolation. Most of the cases were in unimmunized individuals.
In LA County this year, one other case of measles was reported in February.
Infant with measles visits OC Children's Hospital ER Orange County health officials last week said an infant infected with measles returned to the county following international travel.
The infant made three visits to Children's Hospital of Orange County Emergen-
cy Department from noon-5 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2-10 p.m. Dec. 2 and 5:30-9 p.m. Dec. 3, according to the OC Health Care Agency.
"With recent and upcoming holiday travel there are potential areas of exposure," Orange County Health Officer Regina Chinsio-Kwong said in a statement Dec. 5. "If you are planning to travel and have not been immunized, talk to a provider to consider getting a vaccine. It is important for those returning from travel to monitor for symptoms. If a rash develops, call your medical provider before arriving at the medical office, to avoid exposing others to the measles virus. Immunization provides the best protection."
County and hospital personnel were working to identify and contact "anyone who may have been exposed to this case and who are at increased risk of severe outcomes, such as infants, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems," according to an OCHCA statement.
Potentially exposed people were urged to confirm their vaccination status or possible immunization through prior infection.

The Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday held a celebration at Dignity Health Sports Park's Legends Plaza after winning their sixth MLS Cup.
Players, coaches and staff gathered for the celebration in Carson. Team broadcaster Joe Tutino was the emcee and DJ Vick One provided musical entertainment.
"This whole team will go down in the history as a one of the great teams I think of the Galaxy, not just because of today, but all year," coach Greg Vanney said after Saturday's 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls increased their record and gave it the cup for the first time since 2014.
"They broke all kinds of records all year in a club that has set a lot of records in the league over the years. They should be remembered for it, and I believe they will, because of the way they finished it off today."
The Galaxy's 18 goals in five playoff games were a record as was their plus-14 goal differential. They were the first team to have four players with at least three goals during the playoffs — six from Dejan Joveljic, four each from Riqui Puig and Joseph Paintsil and three from Gabriel Pec.
The Galaxy were 17-0-4 in all competitions at Dignity Health Sports Park in 2024. The 17 victories at home equals the MLS record for the most wins in a single venue within a season, regular season and playoffs.
D.C. United set the record in 1998 with 17 victories at RFK Stadium. It was tied by the Chicago Fire in 2000 with 17 victories at Soldier Field and the Galaxy in 2014 with 17 victories at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Playing in the MLS Cup for a record 10th time and first since 2014, Paintsil and Joveljic scored in the opening 13 minutes and John McCarthy made four saves, including stopping Cameron Harper's shot in the 85th minute and Elias Manoel's header five minutes

into second-half stoppage time to preserve the lead.
Paintsil sprinted past the New York defense to collect a through ball from Gastón Brugman and rolled a shot from about 10 yards out past goalkeeper Carlos Coronel in the ninth minute. Edwin Cerrillo was also credited with an assist.
Joveljic controlled a header from Mark Delgado about eight yards past the half-way line, drove to near the penalty spot and put a left-footed shot past Coronel.
The scoring sequence on the Red Bulls' goal began with Emil Forsberg's corner kick which was headed away by Galaxy defender Maya Yoshida. After the Galaxy was unable to clear the ball, it went to Nealis, who put a shot from near the penalty spot inside the right goalpost.
Brugman was selected as the MVP in his first start since Oct. 5 after being used as a substitute for the final regular-season game and each of the first four playoff games.
Vanney said he chose Brugman to start to "win the middle of the park ... especially early in the game, when they usually like to have it really like fast and pressing and disruptive."
"To me, they came out a little bit slower than I was expecting them to come

out," Vanney said. "But we came out fast, like we were prepared for that game, and Gaston was able to step in (and) win balls. He played an incredible pass through the lines. He was a warrior in both directions."
Both teams took 12 shots. The Galaxy led 6-5 in shots on goal. New York took six corner kicks to the Galaxy's four before a sold-out crowd at Dignity Health Sports Park announced at 26,812.
Coronel made four saves.
The Galaxy won despite the absence of Puig, their best player, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the second half of the Western Conference Final Nov. 30. He continued to play for more than 30 minutes and provided the gamewinning assist on Joveljic's 85th-minute goal in the 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC.
Puig was selected for the MLS Best XI after scoring 13 goals and leading the team with 15 assists in 29 regularseason games. He was among four players in the league with at least 13 goals scored and 15 assists.
He also led the league in touches (2,847), passes attempted (2,847), passes completed (2,497), fouls suffered (83) and multiassist performances (6).
In the playoffs, Puig had four goals and three assists. After missing the playoffs three of the past four seasons, including finishing 13th in the 14-team Western Conference in 2023, the Galaxy tied Los Angeles FC for first with a 19-8-7 record, but were seeded second because their plus-19 goal differential was one less than LAFC's.
The Galaxy then defeated
This was the second time the Red Bulls reached the MLS Cup. They lost to the Columbus Crew, 3-1, in 2008 at the then-Home Depot Center, now Dignity Health Sports Park, when the game was played at neutral sites. New York was 11-9-14 in the regular season and seeded seventh in the Eastern Conference. They defeated second-seeded Columbus, two games to none, in the first round, sixth-seeded New York City FC, 2-0, in an Eastern Conference semifinal and fourthseeded Orlando City, 1-0, in the Eastern Conference final to become the lowest seeded team to reach the MLS Cup.

Through the program, CAL Fire provides funding for local projects and activities that address the risk of wildfire and reduce wildfire potential to forested and forest adjacent communities. Funded activities include hazardous fuel reduction, fire prevention planning and fire prevention education with an emphasis on improving public health and safety while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality for the region. The grant award is crucial to decreasing the frequency and potential of wildfires in the Santa Ana River bottom by controlling invasive non-native plants with on-going long term vegetation management. These efforts will reduce fuel load and minimize the impacts of future wildfires, while also protecting and restoring sensitive natural resources.

Riverside Public Utilities recognized for excellence in communications
Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) was recently recognized for excellence in communications for its efforts to make rebate and other forms more accessible to blind and visually-impaired customers by converting them into Braille and largetype formats. RPU recognized the need for these products, given that almost 13 percent of Riverside’s
population is above the age of 65, and an estimated 2.3 percent are vision disabled. RPU developed Braille materials to support blind residents and learned along the way that customers who are not blind but find it difficult to read standard-print sized materials would benefit from large-type format printing. To assist both groups of customers, RPU decided to produce a selection of materials in both Braille and large-type format. The large-type materials were printed in both English and Spanish and are much easier to read by those with diminished vision.

San Bernardino County sells surplus flood control land
More than 1,200 acres of vacant surplus flood control land in north Rancho Cucamonga has been converted into what could eventually be well over $110 million in revenue for future flood control projects. The Board of Supervisors, acting as the governing body of the San Bernardino County Flood Control District, on Dec. 3 agreed to sell approximately 1,252 acres of land it had declared surplus in 2009 to Rancho Etiwanda LLC for up to $93 million plus interest and potentially as much as $20 million in profit-sharing revenue. The board approved a purchase agreement for the valuable acreage, much of which is expected to be developed into muchneeded housing, guaranteeing a maximum amount of return for the Flood Control District. The land includes a 159-acre open
space easement that will remain on the property. San Bernardino County marks 9th anniversary of 2015 terrorist attack
Dec. 2 marked the ninth anniversary of the 2015 San Bernardino terrorist attack, which took the lives of 14 people, including 13 county employees. Dozens of other county employees suffered serious physical and emotional injuries. The county hosted a private memorial service on Dec. 2 for survivors and the families of the deceased at the Curtain of Courage Memorial at the County Government Center in San Bernardino. The county also conducted a virtual moment of remembrance on the county’s social media channels and lowered flags to half-staff.
San Bernardino County Board adopts new county flag
For the first time in 40 years a new flag will fly in front of San Bernardino County government buildings. The Board of Supervisors on Dec. 3 adopted a new county flag, the third in the county’s 171-year history and the first since the current flag was adopted in 1984. The new flag was designed by the County Administrative Office Design Team with input from county leadership. The banner incorporates five stars representing the county’s five supervisorial districts, the county’s arrowhead logo, the 1853 date of the county’s establishment, a silhouette of mountains representing the county’s mountain communities, and gold and blue stripes representing the county’s desert and valley communities.

Have you ever heard thatcompanies don't hire over the holidays? Me too. I've heard it more times than I can count. Many job seekers make the decision to pause their job search around Thanksgiving. They wait to restart it after the New Year, because they assume that the search is a waste of time.
These job seekers could be right. On average, there is less hiring during the holiday season. There are definitely more layoffs as we get closer to the end of the year.
But, there may be another side to consider.
As a job seeker, over the years, I have received more job offers in November and December than any other time of the year. It has truly
surprised me each time it has happened.
Here's my theory on why this has happened. First, employers are hiring throughout the year. Yes, there may be fewer job postings near the end of the year, but I suspect that jobs posted at the end of the year are roles that the company definitely wants to fill. Because many job seekers put their job searches on hold during the holidays, I suspect the competition may be less intense. In other words, you may find yourself competing with fewer resumes during December.
In addition, if a company is going to the trouble to post a job and to interview for it during the holidays, the company really want
Career corner: Keep hope this holiday season
By Angela Copeland angela@copelandcoaching.com
to fill the role. They aren't posting just to see what's out there. They aren't trying to waste your time.
Speaking of timing, companies who are hiring near the end of the year are often looking for the next year to start out strong. They hope that the candidate they hire will start their new job in January. So, interviews are less likely to be delayed or to go on for months.
We are all busy during the holiday season. But, if you are in need of a job, I would encourage you to keep an eye on the latest job postings. Don't assume companies won't hire during December. They do it every day. Think of it like going to work out at the gym during December. In December, the gym is empty. There's peace

and quiet. There's little competition for the equipment. The gym is yours.
But, the minute January first rolls around, the gym is packed. Everyone has a new goal. You have to wait in line. It's an entirely different experience.
The same thing is true
for job searching. Get out there while everyone else is distracted. Show your next company that you're serious, and that you are ready to start off the New Year strong. A little work this year can go a long way at laying your foundation for a successful 2025.
Monrovia Old Town Report: Santa baby...
By Shawn Spencer shawn@girlfridaysolutions.net
What’s happening in Old Town these days? Well, Tito’s finally opened! After a lengthy period of who knows what was happening behind those papered windows, Tito’s opened to the very excited public last week.
If you are from the area, you may have visited their original location in El Monte. Their sandwiches are delicious! Welcome to Monrovia, Tito’s! We have been anxiously awaiting this for a long time now and we wish you nothing but success!
We have some changes coming soon — now, this is not written in stone, but the hammer and chisel are poised to strike.
Steve Kwan, the owner of Copper Still Grill, apparently has his fingers in all the pies. He is set to open The Crimson at 625 S. Myrtle Ave.
in the next few months. It will be a restaurant, serving the typical fare one can now expect on Myrtle and an entertainment venue, stage and all. The Crimson plans to feature two shows a night, highlighting a variety of music genres.
Steve has also leased the abandoned Bella Sera. After a bit of interior remodeling, he plans to open a steak and seafood restaurant. To all of you holding recently purchased gift cards to Bella Sera, no, they will not be accepted. Since Butcher Block is also closed, all cards may now be considered garbage.
But wait, there’s more!
Steve has also purchased 38 Degrees, which was listed for sale earlier this year. From what I hear, Mr. Kwan plans to reopen as a Blues and BBQ joint, complete with its very own pitmaster
(I’m excited about that part).

Four restaurants within spitting distance of each other? If Steve Baker weren’t our forever Mr. Monopoly, Steve Kwan would certainly be in the running for that title. Love the vitality these new restaurants will poten-
tially bring to Old Town. I’m crossing my fingers that the menus are diverse and fresh enough to stand up to what is already available in town. I’m sure Steve has a solid business plan. I mean, you would have to with so many
irons in the fire. Good luck, Steve! We’re rooting for ya.
Can we all just pause for a moment? I’m not sure why everything is so hectic and why my house isn’t even decorated yet for the holidays. I cannot be the only one who feels like Thanksgiving was just a few days ago.
It's time to revise your resume, update your LinkedIn, and begin to attend networking events. Keep hope about your job search this holiday season! Angela Copeland, a leadership and career expert, can be reached at www. angelacopeland.com.
During this time of running around like crazy people, I want us all to pause for a second and thank our city staff, who are too numerous to name, and all of our community members who participated in the Christmas Parade, or Holiday Parade if you prefer. It was such a fun night and an epic parade. The entries were all fabulous and the kiddos were extra cute! It was cold enough to feel Christmas-y but warm enough to be comfortable. Did you know that the horses have glitter on their hooves?
Stellar event, I tell you! Thank you to all who made it possible and all who attended.
Speaking of which, you’ve all heard of the Mediterranean Diet, Keto, Low Carb, blah blah blah and etc. What you may not have heard of is the Santa Diet. I hear it is pretty easy to follow. Walk a bit in our lovely Wilderness Preserve, eat three to four times a week at Sena and have a beautiful Mrs. Claus to keep you in check! Do all of these things and then you may look as fly as our Santa does. I’m quite sure I saw a couple of ladies faint when Santa closed out the parade. “Silver Fox” may have been mentioned. Our Santa is certainly jolly, but there is no jelly in that belly. Thanks Santa! Now, can I please get back on your Good List!!??

Velázquez’s ‘Portrait of a Queen’ from the Prado opens at Norton Simon Friday
By Staff

TheNortonSimon Museumpresents “Mariana: Velázquez’s Portrait of a Queen” from the Museo Nacional del Prado. On view from Friday through March 24, 2025, the exhibition is centered on the nearly life-size portrait “Queen Mariana of Austria” (1652–53) by 17th-century Spanish painter Diego Velázquez (1599 –1660). One of the highlights of the Prado’s collection of works by the artist, this masterpiece has never before been exhibited on the West Coast, and its presentation at the Norton Simon Museum offers visitors a rare opportunity to see this work in person.
Velázquez's “Queen Mariana of Austria” is one of the artist’s most accomplished portraits, depicting the 18-year-old monarch in full splendor. She is clad in quintessential Spanish fashion, wearing a luxurious black and silver dress over the rigid support structure known as the guardainfante—which is so-called because its dramatically wide hips could mask pregnancy. The young queen, who had recently recovered from the birth of her first child with King Philip IV, gazes out with a somber,
almost inscrutable expression, somewhat at odds with the spirited flamboyance of her beribboned wig and colossal feathered headpiece. Mariana was Velázquez's first major composition after returning to Madrid from several years in Rome, and it ushered in a distinctive and final chapter of the artist's storied career.
For the first time, the artist focused primarily on images of women and children, which he depicted with great sensitivity and a new flair for color.
At the Norton Simon Museum, the portrait of the young queen will be surrounded by an international group of artists whose works were collected by the Habsburg court. Paintings by Nicolas Poussin, Guido Reni and Peter Paul Rubens, all highlights of the Museum’s collections, will be displayed side by side to evoke Mariana’s quotidian access to remarkable works of art and to invite comparisons between Velázquez and artists he knew and admired. The Velázquez portrait will also be shown in relationship to the museum's paintings by Jusepe de Ribera, Bartolomé-Esteban Murillo and Francisco de

Casper (A517225)
Zurbarán, displayed in an adjacent gallery, providing a unique chance to experience this essential quartet of 17th-century Spanish painters under one roof.
The loan of ‘Queen Mariana of Austria’ continues a new exchange partnership between the Norton Simon Museum and the Museo Nacional del Prado, which was launched with the loan of Francisco de Zurbarán's “Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose,” on view in Madrid from March 18 to June 30, 2024. Signed works by Velázquez are exceedingly rare and appear in only a handful of American institutions. The Prado possesses a remarkable 48 paintings by Velázquez— nearly 40 percent of the artist's extant body of work—including many of his most iconic compositions.
“Queen Mariana of Austria” was exhibited in the United States only once before, when it was lent to The Metropolitan Museum of Art for a 1989 retrospective.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a range of special events, including a lecture series and musical performance co-organized with Spain Arts + Culture. Information will be available at nortonsimon.org.
This gentle 4-year-old husky is a sweet soul with a shy side, but with a little patience, his warm personality shines through. Casper may be a bit nervous at first in new environments and meeting new people, but he eventually begins to settle and even enjoys a cozy nap. On a leash, Casper is a dream—he’s easy to handle, doesn’t pull, and is easily redirected from distractions like squirrels or other dogs. During a walk in the park, another off-leash husky ran up to him, and Casper handled it like a pro. His body was relaxed, tail wagging, and he was friendly. They even shared a polite sniff before moving along calmly. Casper loves gentle attention and will come up for pets and affection once he’s comfortable. He’s curious yet cautious around new people, sometimes taking a step back before warming up. Once he’s familiar, though, he’s affectionate, friendly, and even easy to manage. Casper will thrive in a calm, understanding home that gives him the space and time to open up at his own pace. With his gentle nature and love for quiet companionship, he’ll make a loyal, loving friend.
Martinella (A517891)
This adorable 6-month-old Pit Bull Terrier mix (or so we think—she’s likely a mix of breeds) is as sweet as they come. Martinella may be a bit shy at first, but once she feels comfortable, she warms up quickly and loves gentle pets and neck scratches. This precious pup is also missing one eye, but that doesn’t slow her down! Martinella has a curious, wiggly side and enjoys being close to people, often leaning in for cuddles. She’s still learning how to explore her surroundings at her own pace, and while toys remain a bit of a mystery, she’s sure to bring endless joy and companionship to her future family. At 30 pounds and growing, Martinella would thrive in a patient, loving home that can help her build confidence and continue to blossom. If you’re looking for a snuggle buddy with a soft, gentle spirit, Martinella would love to meet you!
The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines. Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 2:00 – 5:00. West Covina seeks dismissal of former fire captain's discrimination suit
By City News Service
Arguing there are no triable issues, the city of West Covina is seeking dismissal of a former Fire Department captain's lawsuit that alleges he was forced to resign in 2022 in the face of possibly losing his retirement medical benefits for complaining that the fire chief was not following coronavirus safety measures.
Curtis McCart's Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit allegations include disability and age discrimination as well as retaliation. He seeks reinstatement along with unspecified compensatory damages.
But in court papers filed Thursday with Judge Peter A. Hernandez, attorneys for the city dispute McCart's allegations, saying the plaintiff was placed on paid administrative leave for legitimate reasons because of worrisome statements he made to colleagues. The same lawyers also say the plaintiff did not file a griev-
ance or complaint about alleged COVID-19 regulation violations during his employment.
McCart also was unable to state any specific coronavirus regulation violated by Fire Chief Vincent Capelle or others, the West Covina lawyers further maintain in their pleadings.
McCart was put on paid administrative leave in July 2022, in part for allegedly stating in a conversation with colleagues that he blamed a deadly shooting at a Los Angeles County fire station on management there and also for making remarks about "hitting, punching and/or laying out" Capelle or others, according to the city's attorneys court papers, which further state that McCart denied making the statements.
McCart, now 58, worked with the WCFD for more than 32 years and prior to his alleged forced retirement was the city's most senior fire captain. Starting

in March 2020 and continuing through 2022, McCart complained that Capelle refused to wear coronavirus masks and socially distance when indoors, the suit brought in June 2023 states.
"Fire Chief Capelle led by example in breaking COVID-19 safety regula-
tions," according to the suit, which further alleges that in doing so, Capelle "created a culture at the department that permitted employees to openly flout without consequence COVID-19 safety regulations."
McCart also spoke out about other workplace issues, including what he
believed to be the mistreatment of homeless persons by department members, the suit states.
In early 2022, Capelle asked McCart if he had retirement plans, to which the plaintiff replied that he would consider that issue in the future, according to the suit. But in May of that year, Capelle sent McCart a memo stating that if the plaintiff did not retire, Capelle would transfer him to a busier and less desirable post despite the tradition of allowing employees with the most seniority to choose their assignments, the suit states.
McCart subsequently relayed his concerns about coronavirus safety protocol to his supervisor, Assistant Fire Chief Jim Rudroff, as well as City Councilman Tony Wu and City Manager David Carmany, according to the complaint.
In July 2022, the city notified McCart of a job relocation and shift change
Thousands attend Azusa's Festival of Lights
Morethan3,000 peopleattended the Azusa Festival of Lights on Saturday for an evening of holiday cheer, a toy giveaway and tree lighting ceremony.
The Community Resources Department organized the festival at the Azusa Civic Center from 4 to 8 p.m., according to a city statement. The toy giveaway featured more than 1,000 toys that went to local children.
“The Festival of Lights is an Azusa tradition that truly unites the community in the spirit of the holidays,” Mayor Robert Gonzales said in a statement. “We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this event’s success, and we thank our residents for their enthusiastic support. This year was particularly
special, as we expanded the festivities to encompass the entire Civic Center, offering even more fun and activities for everyone to enjoy.”
Several themed zones at the festival included the

"There was even a sighting of the Grinch, causing problems with Santa," city officials said. "But the Azusa Police Department quickly took the Grinch away!"
that put him in a much busier station that had more calls and required him to work on most holidays, the suit states. In their court papers, city attorneys state that McCart's services were needed at the other station and had nothing to do with his age.
McCart complained to his superiors and co-workers that Capelle allegedly was trying to force him to retire and renewed his concerns about the coronavirus safety protocol, the suit states.
The city notified the plaintiff in September 2022 of its intent to terminate him "based on McCart's complaints and reports of noncompliance with regulations and unlawful conduct," according to the suit, which further states that officials told McCart that if he did not resign, he would lose his retiree medical benefits, forcing the plaintiff to decide to retire the next month.
Highlights of the holiday festival Included:
- North Pole: photos with Santa, toy giveaways, and reindeer races;
- Santa’s Workshop: kids'
holiday crafts, face painting and information booths;
- Nutcracker Stage & Courtyard: performances by local groups and artists;
- Whoville: "a meet-andgreet with the one and only Mr. Grinch," officials said;
- Winter Wonderland: snow play and train rides on the Polar Express; and
- Ice Village: ice skating, food and a chance to meet characters from the Disney musical "Frozen."
The children’s gift giveaway was supported by donations from Cruising Back 2 Route 66 with Louie Gomez and Lavonne Moralez, local organizations and sports teams, the Azusa Rotary Club and the Azusa Police Department, officials said.

Asecond death was reported Monday from Los Alamitos' weekend race card, bringing the number horses to die from racing or training injuries at the Cypress track this year to 18.
Lady Derby, who finished in either sixth or seventh place in all six of her career races, collapsed and died after Friday's seventh race.
"The 6-year-old mare collapsed while cooling out after the race. Termed

a sudden death," California Horse Racing Board spokesman Mike Marten told City News Service on Monday.
The official race chart says she "broke in and bumped, raced in range three to four wide on the first turn, chased between the two wide on the second bend and tired."
Over the weekend, state horse racing officials also reported the death of Give Me the Lute.
"The 8-year-old gelding
decision to rescind the unsuitability designation for the facility couldn't be made until the BSCC's next meeting on Dec. 18.
According to the Los Angeles Times last week, Viera Rosa would retire by the end of the year after 20 months as department chief.
Viera Rosa sent a memo to the LA County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 4 indicating his plans to retire as chief probation officer, the Times reported Dec. 7, citing several sources who requested anonymity to discuss a sensitive personnel matter.
Problems at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey have led to the board's decision to close the facility, which Viera Rosa is responsible for overseeing.
"We have a lot of challenges in the probation department and I thank him for taking on this job during some difficult times," Supervisor Janice Hahn, whose district includes the Los Padrinos
facility, said in a statement to The Times.
The Board of Supervisors scheduled a closed-door meeting with Viera Rosa at Tuesday's regularly scheduled board meeting. According to the meeting agenda, the board was to conduct a performance review for Viera Rosa and consider candidates to replace him.
There have been 66 probation officers in the department placed on leave since the beginning of the year for various issues relating to conduct on and off duty, The Times previously reported.
In February, the California Board of State and Community Corrections stopped short of closing Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall and the Barry J. Nidorf Secure Youth Treatment Facility in Sylmar.
The state board ruled that the two facilities were "unsuitable" to house youth detainees. Its decision found the Sylmar site to be out of compliance with regulations

Give Me the Lute was injured while competing in the third race Saturday at Los Alamitos, requiring euthanasia," Marten told CNS on Sunday.
The official race chart says he "tracked from inside, went wrong past the nine-sixteenths pole, pulled up and came to a stop near the sevensixteenths pole and was transported off the track via equine ambulance."

Give Me the Lute had 11 victories in his 40 career races.

pertaining to staffing levels, training, use of force training, disciplinary procedures and youth access to programs and recreation.
Los Padrinos was found to have significantly more problems, with noncompliance found in staffing levels, fire safety plans, safety checks, room confinement procedures, use of force training, searches, education programs, youth access to programs and recreation and disciplinary procedures.
According to the department, of the 66 officers placed on leave, 39 were for issues of general misconduct, which includes suspected use of excessive force, child endangerment or abuse, possession of contraband, and negligent supervision, the Times reported. In addition, 18 were placed on leave for suspected sexual misconduct and nine for arrests unrelated to employment.
In October, the state board found Viera Rosa was
unable to get a handle on the staffing crisis at Los Padrinos and that the facility was no longer safe for youths. The board gave the department until Thursday, Dec. 12 to relocate more than 200 youths from Los Padrinos, the Times reported.
Los Padrinos houses predisposition youth detainees awaiting resolution of their court cases, while the Nidorf facility holds post-disposition youth offenders who have been convicted.
The county reopened Los Padrinos last year and transferred all pre-disposition youth to the facility, moving them away from Nidorf Hall in Sylmar and Central Juvenile Hall in Lincoln Heights, which were both declared unsuitable and ordered to close by the state corrections board.
At that time, the state board did not have jurisdiction over the Nidorf Secure Youth Treatment Facility for post-disposition youth, but it was granted that authority by
the state later in the year.
County Supervisor Kathryn Barger praised the Dec. 7 decision, but pointed out that more work needs to be done to improve the juvenile facilities.
"Today's suitability finding is a testament to the hard work that our county's Probation Department, under new leadership, has put in to improve the care youth are receiving at two challenging sites," Barger said in a statement. "The work is far from over, but we are headed in the right direction.
"I will continue closely tracking our Probation Department's focus on sustaining and enhancing this progress and implementation. I fully support a continued focus on staffing at the appropriate levels — this is the heart of what will make improvements permanent. Keeping the youth in our care and staff safe is my top priority for the department."

5-year-old child killed in attack by 2 dogs
By City News Service
A5-year-old girl who was mauled on the head and torso as her father tried to protect her from two large family dogs in their backyard in unincorporated Covina was identified by authorities Tuesday. The attack occurred around noon Sunday in the 2500 block of Palomino Drive, sheriff's homicide Lt. Steven De Jong told City News Service. The girl, Amelia Yu, was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
"The child had been around the dogs her entire life," De Jong said. Amelia's father told detectives she was walking behind him in the backyard when he realized two dogs were attacking her and jumped on his daughter to protect her, the lieutenant said.
of Supervisors expressed concern about the youth who will be displaced when Los Padrinos closes.
"There is no effort at this time to make any sort of plan to relocate the young people detained in Los Padrinos," said Angeles Zaragoza, a board member and alternate public defender, at a Nov. 21 meeting where she rebuked the county, accusing it of "blatant disregard" of the oversight board. "I'm just at a loss to how we have gotten here."
Attorneys for the board said at the meeting they would consider legal action against the agency if the relocation deadline came and went without movement from the county, The Times reported.
"Everyone on this board is concerned about Dec. 12 and what will occur after Dec. 12," board Chair Linda Penner said.
Viera Rosa declined to comment to The Times through a Probation Department spokesperson.
The attacking dogs were a 10-year-old Rottweiler and a 6-year-old RottweilerWeimaraner mix, De Jong said. All four of the dogs who lived at the home were taken into custody by Los Angeles County Animal Control officers.
Detectives were investigating the child's death as "a very unfortunate, tragic accident," De Jong said.

Biden to issue a preemptive pardon to protect possible targets from prosecution by President-elect Donald Trump's Justice Department.
Trump had said members of Congress — one of whom was Schiff — who investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot involving Trump supporters should be imprisoned. The presidentelect said he would leave decisions up to incoming Attorney General Pam Bondi, a Trump appointee.
Schiff said a preemptive pardon would set a partisan precedent and was unnecessary.
On Friday, Schiff cast his final House vote and thanked his constituents in Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Hollywood and nearby areas.
"I'm really looking forward to serving you in the U.S. Senate, and I want to thank the people all over California for that opportunity," Schiff posted on social media. "We have so much to do."

He noted meetings with Senate Republicans and Democrats and his observation of a "real culture" of finding common ground.
Butler is a longtime adviser to Harris and was California's first openly LGBTQ person in the U.S. Senate, the first Black lesbian to openly serve in Congress and the third Black female senator.
"As I end this journey as the junior senator representing 40 million Californians, it is a day that I want to thank them and thank Governor Newsom for giving me the honor and privilege of serving our great state," Butler said in a 14-minute departing speech on the Senate floor.
She said it was a "remarkable honor" to follow in Feinstein's footsteps and walk the same hallways as former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, the first Black woman to serve as assistant majority leader, and Harris.
"As policymakers, it is up to us to plant seeds that will inspire future generations to understand and imagine what is possible," Butler posted on social media. "While my time in the Senate is over, my work to plant those seeds will continue on."
In a statement Sunday, Newsom said, "When Senator Laphonza Butler took her seat in the Senate a year ago, she brought with her a lifetime of lessons learned from organizing and advocating for opportunity and justice. In just a short time, she has left an indelible mark — proving that true leadership isn't measured by the length of service, but by the depth of impact."
Newsom's office added that while in the Senate, Butler advocated for policies to bolster worker protections, increase wages, expand affordable housing and create economic opportunities for all state residents.

Pasadena seeks volunteers for annual Homeless Count
By Staff

Pasadena officials this week called for volunteers to help with the upcoming annual homeless count.
The survey of city residents experiencing homelessness is scheduled to take place on the evening of Jan. 22 and the morning of Jan. 23.
The 2025 Pasadena Homeless Count "sets in motion a year full of education, engagement and action for the Pasadena Partnership," which administers homeless services in the city, according to a city statement.
Every year volunteers work to tally the number of people experiencing homelessness living on Pasadena
streets of for one night and a morning during the final 10 days of January. The count provides data to the state on homelessness in Pasadena, "helps advocate for vital community resources, and engages directly with our neighbors experiencing homelessness through a survey," officials said.
Volunteers take to the streets in three- or fourmember teams to assigned zones on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 8-10 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 23 from 6-8 a.m. The same teams work during the evening and morning shifts.
Volunteers who register to participate must be at least 18 years old and attend an internet-based orienta-
tion session to prepare for the count on Jan. 15. The deadline for volunteers to register is Jan. 5. Registration is online at PasadenaPartnership.org.
"Volunteers are the foundation of ensuring the count is a success and is carried out effectively and comprehensively," city officials said. For questions, email info@pasadenapartnership. org.
In 2024, people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Pasadena totaled 321. The total homeless population was 556 people, the same number as in 2023, according to the Pasadena Partnership. In 2022, 512 people experiencing homelessness were counted.
