Adam Schiff takes oath as California's newest US senator

Adam Schiff, California's newest U.S. senator, took the oath of office Monday. Schiff, a Democrat, replaces Sen. Laphonza Butler, who was appointed after longtime Sen. Diane Feinstein's death on Sept. 29, 2023.

Schiff defeated Republican Steve Garvey in the November election, and Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed the former longtime congressman from Burbank to serve the remaining few weeks of the Feinstein-Butler term in office. Schiff, 64, served nearly 25 years in the House of Representatives and won more than 65% of the vote in the Senate race.

"I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve all Californians as their next United States Senator," Schiff said in a statement. "My

family came to the Golden State when I was a child in the hope of finding a strong economy, safe neighborhoods and good schools. And we found all that we could hope for in each of these respects.

"I will be a tireless advocate for Californians in every part of the state and work across the aisle to deliver on day one," Schiff said.

Alex Padilla, California's senior U.S. senator, escorted Schiff across the Senate floor to where Vice President Kamala Harris administered the oath.

“Throughout his career, Adam has been a tireless champion for middle-class families, working to lower the cost of housing and health care while protecting our fundamental freedoms,"

Padilla said in a statement. "As California and the nation prepare for the challenges ahead, I’m glad to have Adam Schiff as a trusted partner in the Senate."

In a Jan. 3 ceremony, Schiff will be sworn in again for his full six-year term.

"The work ahead of us will not be easy — nothing worth doing ever is," Schiff said. "But my promise is to work every day to deliver results, and make California's future brighter for all of us in this Golden State."

"I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of giants," Schiff said in his statement. "Former Sen. Dianne Feinstein leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of courage and effectiveness. Nobody can ever fill her

immense shoes, but I will continue to be inspired by her example."

Newsom appointed Butler in October 2023 to Feinstein's seat and on Sunday the governor announced that Schiff would take the office Monday "to ensure Californians have their duly elected representative seated as soon as possible."

Butler resigned from the Senate effective Sunday, according to Newsom's office.

Laura Friedman, a former assemblywoman and Glendale City Council member, will succeed Schiff representing the 30th Congressional District. She soundly defeated Republican Alex Balekian in November.

Also on Monday, Schiff said he did not want President Joe

APalm Springs Police Department officer who crashed his motorcycle into a crowd of people during a weekend holiday parade, injuring himself and nearly a dozen other people, remained hospitalized Monday, while the agency's fleet of motorcycles was taken out of service pending an investigation of the crash.

Volunteers to place wreaths at Riverside National Cemetery in annual tribute

ivil Air Patrol cadets, joined by current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, volunteers from nonprofit organizations and families throughout Riverside County, will fan out across Riverside National Cemetery on Saturday to place Christmas wreaths at graves in an annual salute to the fallen.

The cemetery walk will coincide with nearly 4,700 similar deployments nationwide in recognition of "National Wreaths Across America Day," in which the Civil Air Patrol, also known as the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, takes a leading role.

"National Wreaths Across America Day is an event held every December in which millions of volunteers unite to place sponsored veterans' wreaths at the final resting place of millions of service members in thousands of participating locations across the U.S. and abroad," according to the nonprofit Wreaths Across America. "These wreaths are delivered through the generosity of hundreds of volunteer truck drivers and their companies and are sponsored by individuals and businesses."

CAP Squadron 45, based at March Air Reserve Base and composed of cadets ages 12 to 19 years old, has spearheaded the Wreaths Across

WAA began, informally, in 1992, when the owners of the Harrington, Mainebased Worcester Wreath Co. wanted to do something positive with their surplus holiday wreaths, offering them to Arlington National Cemetery for graveside placements.

The gesture turned into a yearly tradition, eventually expanding to multiple states, where members of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts became involved, placing wreaths.

In 2006, the ceremonies were formalized and scheduled for specific days in December, according to wreathsacrossamerica.org.

"Our mission to

`Remember, Honor and Teach' is carried out throughout the year," according to wreathsacrossamerica.org.

"Wreaths Across America's mission touches the lives of thousands of school, scout, civic and religious groups across the country."

CAP officials said some of the wreaths are sponsored, often by relatives of individuals laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery, and those garlands are taken to specific plots. Otherwise, volunteers try to canvass different segments of the cemetery, where wreaths are placed in orderly arrangements.

Reaching the nearly 250,000 graves at the cemetery has never been possible, so volunteers focus on certain spaces.

Flag walks at the cemetery

in honor of Memorial Day and Veterans Day involve CAP cadets, Boy Scouts, police Explorers and other groups, who generally are able to erect miniature American flags at every grave.

Unlike the wreaths, which are heavier, more expensive and have to be carefully preserved for one-time use, the flags are compact, cost less than a dollar apiece and can be reused.

Squadron 45 and other nonprofit entities seek donations year-round to support the WAA cause.

Before the deployment begins Saturday, there will be a formal ceremony at the cemetery Amphitheater highlighting the meaning of the occasion.

College of the Desert launches paramedic certificate program

College of the Desert announced the launch of its upcoming paramedic certificate program Tuesday.

Aimed at addressing a positional shortage in the Coachella Valley, the EMS Paramedic Academy will launch during the spring semester, according to a statement from the institu-

tion.

"It is our goal, at College of the Desert, to provide programs that benefit students and the broader community," Public Safety Academy director Walt Meyer said in a statement. "This program caters to the needs of our neighbors and allows students to enter a position that is in high demand."

An internal assessment and recommendation suggested a "shortage of paramedic candidates" in the area, causing many organizations to de-restrict staffing requirements to fill roles. Combined factors, such as an increasingly aging population and paramedic training facilities shutting down during the coronavirus

pandemic, contributed to these shortcomings.

The analysis determined that jobs in the field would increase by 8% through 2027, according to the statement. Applications for the program, which has a capacity of 30 students, are open for current and recently graduated EMT students through Jan. 5.

The Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday held a celebration at Dignity Health Sports Park's Legends Plaza after winning their sixth MLS Cup.

Players, coaches and staff gathered for the celebration in Carson. Team broadcaster Joe Tutino was the emcee and DJ Vick One provided musical entertainment.

"This whole team will go down in the history as a one of the great teams I think of the Galaxy, not just because of today, but all year," coach Greg Vanney said after Saturday's 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls increased their record and gave it the cup for the first time since 2014.

"They broke all kinds of records all year in a club that has set a lot of records in the league over the years. They should be remembered for it, and I believe they will, because of the way they finished it off today."

The Galaxy's 18 goals in five playoff games were a record as was their plus-14 goal differential. They were the first team to have four players with at least three goals during the playoffs — six from Dejan Joveljic, four each from Riqui Puig and Joseph Paintsil and three from Gabriel Pec.

The Galaxy were 17-0-4 in all competitions at Dignity Health Sports Park in 2024. The 17 victories at home equals the MLS record for the most wins in a single venue within a season, regular season and playoffs.

D.C. United set the record in 1998 with 17 victories at RFK Stadium. It was tied by the Chicago Fire in 2000 with 17 victories at Soldier Field and the Galaxy in 2014 with 17 victories at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Playing in the MLS Cup for a record 10th time and first since 2014, Paintsil and Joveljic scored in the opening 13 minutes and John McCarthy made four saves, including stopping Cameron Harper's shot in the 85th minute and Elias Manoel's header five minutes

into second-half stoppage time to preserve the lead.

Paintsil sprinted past the New York defense to collect a through ball from Gastón Brugman and rolled a shot from about 10 yards out past goalkeeper Carlos Coronel in the ninth minute. Edwin Cerrillo was also credited with an assist.

Joveljic controlled a header from Mark Delgado about eight yards past the half-way line, drove to near the penalty spot and put a left-footed shot past Coronel.

The scoring sequence on the Red Bulls' goal began with Emil Forsberg's corner kick which was headed away by Galaxy defender Maya Yoshida. After the Galaxy was unable to clear the ball, it went to Nealis, who put a shot from near the penalty spot inside the right goalpost.

Brugman was selected as the MVP in his first start since Oct. 5 after being used as a substitute for the final regular-season game and each of the first four playoff games.

Vanney said he chose Brugman to start to "win the middle of the park ... especially early in the game, when they usually like to have it really like fast and pressing and disruptive."

"To me, they came out a little bit slower than I was expecting them to come

out," Vanney said. "But we came out fast, like we were prepared for that game, and Gaston was able to step in (and) win balls. He played an incredible pass through the lines. He was a warrior in both directions."

Both teams took 12 shots. The Galaxy led 6-5 in shots on goal. New York took six corner kicks to the Galaxy's four before a sold-out crowd at Dignity Health Sports Park announced at 26,812.

Coronel made four saves.

The Galaxy won despite the absence of Puig, their best player, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the second half of the Western Conference Final Nov. 30. He continued to play for more than 30 minutes and provided the gamewinning assist on Joveljic's 85th-minute goal in the 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC.

Puig was selected for the MLS Best XI after scoring 13 goals and leading the team with 15 assists in 29 regularseason games. He was among four players in the league with at least 13 goals scored and 15 assists.

He also led the league in touches (2,847), passes attempted (2,847), passes completed (2,497), fouls suffered (83) and multiassist performances (6).

In the playoffs, Puig had four goals and three assists. After missing the playoffs three of the past four seasons, including finishing 13th in the 14-team Western Conference in 2023, the Galaxy tied Los Angeles FC for first with a 19-8-7 record, but were seeded second because their plus-19 goal differential was one less than LAFC's.

The Galaxy then defeated

This was the second time the Red Bulls reached the MLS Cup. They lost to the Columbus Crew, 3-1, in 2008 at the then-Home Depot Center, now Dignity Health Sports Park, when the game was played at neutral sites. New York was 11-9-14 in the regular season and seeded seventh in the Eastern Conference. They defeated second-seeded Columbus, two games to none, in the first round, sixth-seeded New York City FC, 2-0, in an Eastern Conference semifinal and fourthseeded Orlando City, 1-0, in the Eastern Conference final to become the lowest seeded team to reach the MLS Cup.

wildfire prevention

Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District (RivCoParks) has been awarded $1.7 million in grant funding from the CAL Fire California Climates Investments (CCI) Wildfire Prevention Program. Through the program, CAL Fire provides funding for local projects and activities that address the risk of wildfire and reduce wildfire potential to forested and forest adjacent communities. Funded activities include hazardous fuel reduction, fire prevention planning and fire prevention education with an emphasis on improving public health and safety while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality for the region. The grant award is crucial to decreasing the frequency and potential of wildfires in the Santa Ana River bottom by controlling invasive non-native plants with on-going long term vegetation management. Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) was recently recognized for excellence in communications for its efforts to make rebate and other forms more accessible to blind and visually-impaired customers by converting them into Braille and largetype formats. RPU recognized the need for these products, given that almost 13 percent of Riverside’s

population is above the age of 65, and an estimated 2.3 percent are vision disabled. RPU developed Braille materials to support blind residents and learned along the way that customers who are not blind but find it difficult to read standard-print sized materials would benefit from large-type format printing. To assist both groups of customers, RPU decided to produce a selection of materials in both Braille and large-type format. The large-type materials were printed in both English and Spanish and are much easier to read by those with diminished vision.

San Bernardino County sells surplus flood control land

More than 1,200 acres of vacant surplus flood control land in north Rancho Cucamonga has been converted into what could eventually be well over $110 million in revenue for future flood control projects. The Board of Supervisors, acting as the governing body of the San Bernardino County Flood Control District, on Dec. 3 agreed to sell approximately 1,252 acres of land it had declared surplus in 2009 to Rancho Etiwanda LLC for up to $93 million plus interest and potentially as much as $20 million in profit-sharing revenue. The board approved a purchase agreement for the valuable acreage, much of which is expected to be developed into muchneeded housing, guaranteeing a maximum amount of return for the Flood Control District. The land includes a 159-acre open

space easement that will remain on the property. San Bernardino County marks 9th anniversary of 2015 terrorist attack

Dec. 2 marked the ninth anniversary of the 2015 San Bernardino terrorist attack, which took the lives of 14 people, including 13 county employees. Dozens of other county employees suffered serious physical and emotional injuries. The county hosted a private memorial service on Dec. 2 for survivors and the families of the deceased at the Curtain of Courage Memorial at the County Government Center in San Bernardino. The county also conducted a virtual moment of remembrance on the county’s social media channels and lowered flags to half-staff.

San Bernardino County Board adopts new county flag

For the first time in 40 years a new flag will fly in front of San Bernardino County government buildings. The Board of Supervisors on Dec. 3 adopted a new county flag, the third in the county’s 171-year history and the first since the current flag was adopted in 1984. The new flag was designed by the County Administrative Office Design Team with input from county leadership. The banner incorporates five stars representing the county’s five supervisorial districts, the county’s arrowhead logo, the 1853 date of the county’s establishment, a silhouette of mountains representing the county’s mountain communities, and gold and blue stripes representing the county’s desert and valley communities.

Have you ever heard thatcompanies don't hire over the holidays? Me too. I've heard it more times than I can count. Many job seekers make the decision to pause their job search around Thanksgiving. They wait to restart it after the New Year, because they assume that the search is a waste of time.

These job seekers could be right. On average, there is less hiring during the holiday season. There are definitely more layoffs as we get closer to the end of the year.

But, there may be another side to consider.

As a job seeker, over the years, I have received more job offers in November and December than any other time of the year. It has truly

surprised me each time it has happened.

Here's my theory on why this has happened. First, employers are hiring throughout the year. Yes, there may be fewer job postings near the end of the year, but I suspect that jobs posted at the end of the year are roles that the company definitely wants to fill. Because many job seekers put their job searches on hold during the holidays, I suspect the competition may be less intense. In other words, you may find yourself competing with fewer resumes during December.

In addition, if a company is going to the trouble to post a job and to interview for it during the holidays, the company really want

Career corner: Keep hope this holiday season

to fill the role. They aren't posting just to see what's out there. They aren't trying to waste your time.

Speaking of timing, companies who are hiring near the end of the year are often looking for the next year to start out strong. They hope that the candidate they hire will start their new job in January. So, interviews are less likely to be delayed or to go on for months.

We are all busy during the holiday season. But, if you are in need of a job, I would encourage you to keep an eye on the latest job postings. Don't assume companies won't hire during December. They do it every day. Think of it like going to work out at the gym during December. In December, the gym is empty. There's peace

and quiet. There's little competition for the equipment. The gym is yours.

But, the minute January first rolls around, the gym is packed. Everyone has a new goal. You have to wait in line. It's an entirely different experience.

The same thing is true

for job searching. Get out there while everyone else is distracted. Show your next company that you're serious, and that you are ready to start off the New Year strong. A little work this year can go a long way at laying your foundation for a successful 2025.

Monrovia Old Town Report: Santa baby...

What’s happening in Old Town these days? Well, Tito’s finally opened! After a lengthy period of who knows what was happening behind those papered windows, Tito’s opened to the very excited public last week.

If you are from the area, you may have visited their original location in El Monte. Their sandwiches are delicious! Welcome to Monrovia, Tito’s! We have been anxiously awaiting this for a long time now and we wish you nothing but success!

We have some changes coming soon — now, this is not written in stone, but the hammer and chisel are poised to strike.

Steve Kwan, the owner of Copper Still Grill, apparently has his fingers in all the pies. He is set to open The Crimson at 625 S. Myrtle Ave.

in the next few months. It will be a restaurant, serving the typical fare one can now expect on Myrtle and an entertainment venue, stage and all. The Crimson plans to feature two shows a night, highlighting a variety of music genres.

Steve has also leased the abandoned Bella Sera. After a bit of interior remodeling, he plans to open a steak and seafood restaurant. To all of you holding recently purchased gift cards to Bella Sera, no, they will not be accepted. Since Butcher Block is also closed, all cards may now be considered garbage.

But wait, there’s more!

Steve has also purchased 38 Degrees, which was listed for sale earlier this year. From what I hear, Mr. Kwan plans to reopen as a Blues and BBQ joint, complete with its very own pitmaster

(I’m excited about that part).

Four restaurants within spitting distance of each other? If Steve Baker weren’t our forever Mr. Monopoly, Steve Kwan would certainly be in the running for that title. Love the vitality these new restaurants will poten-

tially bring to Old Town. I’m crossing my fingers that the menus are diverse and fresh enough to stand up to what is already available in town. I’m sure Steve has a solid business plan. I mean, you would have to with so many

irons in the fire. Good luck, Steve! We’re rooting for ya.

Can we all just pause for a moment? I’m not sure why everything is so hectic and why my house isn’t even decorated yet for the holidays. I cannot be the only one who feels like Thanksgiving was just a few days ago.

It's time to revise your resume, update your LinkedIn, and begin to attend networking events. Keep hope about your job search this holiday season! Angela Copeland, a leadership and career expert, can be reached at www. angelacopeland.com.

During this time of running around like crazy people, I want us all to pause for a second and thank our city staff, who are too numerous to name, and all of our community members who participated in the Christmas Parade, or Holiday Parade if you prefer. It was such a fun night and an epic parade. The entries were all fabulous and the kiddos were extra cute! It was cold enough to feel Christmas-y but warm enough to be comfortable. Did you know that the horses have glitter on their hooves?

Stellar event, I tell you! Thank you to all who made it possible and all who attended.

Speaking of which, you’ve all heard of the Mediterranean Diet, Keto, Low Carb, blah blah blah and etc. What you may not have heard of is the Santa Diet. I hear it is pretty easy to follow. Walk a bit in our lovely Wilderness Preserve, eat three to four times a week at Sena and have a beautiful Mrs. Claus to keep you in check! Do all of these things and then you may look as fly as our Santa does. I’m quite sure I saw a couple of ladies faint when Santa closed out the parade. “Silver Fox” may have been mentioned. Our Santa is certainly jolly, but there is no jelly in that belly. Thanks Santa! Now, can I please get back on your Good List!!??

Santa to travel aboard fire engine for nightly trips to spread cheer

Santa Claus joined Riverside Fire Department crews Monday evening to spread cheer throughout neighborhoodscitywide, riding aboard a fire engine and making periodic stops to take photos with kids and distribute candy canes.

The 27th annual "Santa Ride-A-Long" got underway around 6 p.m. and ran for two hours. It will continue nightly during the same hours through Thursday, then resume from Dec. 16 to 18, ending at a different park each night.

Firefighters Association Local 1067 organizes the events every December, with the goal of taking Old St. Nick to every corner of the city.

"The fire engine will travel slowly through the neighborhoods with lights and intermittent siren sounding and stopping in specific areas along the route," Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst said in a statement. "Fire engines will remain in service, and 'Santa' will respond with

the unit if they get an emergency call for service."

Occasionally, Santa will be in the engineer's seat, and other times atop the fire engine, waving as he and the crews make their rounds in the decorated fire apparatus.

Sheriff

2025, and the final 5% hike will be added to members' paychecks beginning Dec. 11, 2026, according to the agreement.

The county General Fund will cover roughly half the contract costs, while the sheriff's departmental budget will cover the other half.

More than 1,600 employees are covered under the compact, which is specifically with RSA's Law Enforcement Unit, encompassing patrol deputies, school resource officers, aviation personnel, basic-level investigators and District Attorney's Office investigators who are below the executive level.

The Law Enforcement Unit's prior five-year collective bargaining agreement expired this week. Nego-

tiations on the new one got underway in August.

Members have different schedules, some assigned to the standard five-day, 40-hour work week, while others are assigned to 4/10 schedules — four 10-hour days — and others are on 3/12 schedules, or three 12-hour days.

The new compact makes allowances for extra duty pay assignments and overtime. There is also a pay allowance for "standby duty," during which an employee can be designated as ready for deployment but may never actually be summoned. For each eight hours in standby mode, the law enforcement officer will receive one-hour of regular pay, according to the terms.

Casper (A517225)

A complete list of the parks at which Kris Kringle will be stopping can be found at riversideca.gov/ fire.

Organizers said Santa is expected to hand out about 4,000 candy canes.

There is additionally extra pay for bilingual capabilities and education incentives compensation, as well as premiums for SWAT, the bomb squad and canine management.

Increased pay will further be provided patrol personnel who are "permanently assigned" to the Palm Desert and Thermal stations.

Only retiring Supervisor Kevin Jeffries has questioned the sustainability of doubledigit percentage pay hikes for public safety personnel, along with general escalating costs tied to pensions for all county employees. Tuesday was his second-tolast meeting on the board, and he opted not to make any comments regarding the new compact.

This gentle 4-year-old husky is a sweet soul with a shy side, but with a little patience, his warm personality shines through. Casper may be a bit nervous at first in new environments and meeting new people, but he eventually begins to settle and even enjoys a cozy nap. On a leash, Casper is a dream—he’s easy to handle, doesn’t pull, and is easily redirected from distractions like squirrels or other dogs. During a walk in the park, another off-leash husky ran up to him, and Casper handled it like a pro. His body was relaxed, tail wagging, and he was friendly. They even shared a polite sniff before moving along calmly. Casper loves gentle attention and will come up for pets and affection once he’s comfortable. He’s curious yet cautious around new people, sometimes taking a step back before warming up. Once he’s familiar, though, he’s affectionate, friendly, and even easy to manage. Casper will thrive in a calm, understanding home that gives him the space and time to open up at his own pace. With his gentle nature and love for quiet companionship, he’ll make a loyal, loving friend.

Martinella (A517891)

This adorable 6-month-old Pit Bull Terrier mix (or so we think—she’s likely a mix of breeds) is as sweet as they come. Martinella may be a bit shy at first, but once she feels comfortable, she warms up quickly and loves gentle pets and neck scratches. This precious pup is also missing one eye, but that doesn’t slow her down! Martinella has a curious, wiggly side and enjoys being close to people, often leaning in for cuddles. She’s still learning how to explore her surroundings at her own pace, and while toys remain a bit of a mystery, she’s sure to bring endless joy and companionship to her future family. At 30 pounds and growing, Martinella would thrive in a patient, loving home that can help her build confidence and continue to blossom. If you’re looking for a snuggle buddy with a soft, gentle spirit, Martinella would love to meet you!

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines. Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 2:00 – 5:00. For those who prefer, adoption appointments are available daily from 10:30 – 1:30 and can be scheduled online. View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org. Riverside County supervisors approve cost-sharing plan tied to Airport Fire

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a cost-sharing agreement between the Riverside County Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service and Orange County Fire Authority to mitigate expenses tied to the 23,526-acre Airport Fire, which was contained in October.

In a 5-0 vote without comment, the board signed off on the agreement, under which Riverside County will pick up about one-third, or $2.6 million, of the nearly $8 million in costs stemming from the roughly monthlong battle to stop the brusher.

"The result of the cost apportionment process is a cost share agreement identifying the percentage of the costs of the fire for which the agencies involved will fund," according to a county fire statement posted to the board's agenda.

Documents showed the Riverside County Fire Department deployed engine crews, strike teams and mobile communications units over

the duration of the Airport Fire, which began on the afternoon of Sept. 9 along Trabuco Canyon Road, next to recreational space used by remote-controlled airplane

enthusiasts, according to the OCFA.

At the height of the blaze, an estimated 2,000 personnel were on the fire lines, and hundreds of properties were

evacuated in both Orange and Riverside counties. The fire expanded into Riverside County through the Cleveland National Forest, approaching the Temescal

Valley and residential areas along the Ortega (74) Highway, as well as in the vicinity of Lake Elsinore.

Almost 200 commercial, residential and other structures were damaged or destroyed, according to officials. A total 22 people, mostly firefighters, were injured, and multiple roads, including the Ortega, were impacted for several weeks.

The fire was 100% contained on Oct. 5. The cause was reportedly sparks thrown from heavy equipment being operated by Orange County Department of Public Works employees.

The Riverside County Fire Department is seeking reimbursement for the lion's share of its expenses through the governor's Office of Emergency Services, specifically a Fire Management Assistance Grant, which could cover 75% of costs.

Desert X organizers announce unveiling of 'The Living Pyramid' sculpture

Organizers of the Coachella Valley art exhibition Desert X Tuesday announced the unveiling of artist and philosopher Agnes Denes' new environmental sculpture, "The Living Pyramid."

Denes' work will be part of the fifth iteration of Desert X, which will occur between March 8 and May 11, although the pyramid is now on display at Sunnylands Center & Gardens before the event starts.

"The Living Pyramid is the most iconic and recurring expression of the pioneer of environmental art Agnes Denes' commitment to the creation of works that speak in equal parts to the

ancient structures of architecture and knowledge that shape our world view, and the endless cycles of life and death that are the transformative powers of nature," Neville Wakefield, Desert X's artistic director, said in a statement.

Born in Budapest in 1931, Denes lived in New York since the 1950s, establishing herself on the international concept art stage in the following two decades. She describes her artistic process as ever-evolving, recognizing that concepts are always subject to change.

"The Living Pyramid" is similarly changing, featuring native vegetation that will transform over the

plants' growth cycles across a six-month stretch. Denes describes the pyramids in her work as stand-ins for social structures "in the form of visual philosophy conveying ecological, social and cultural issues."

In this way, the tiers of the pyramid become "a social construct that cultivates a micro-society of people responsible for its construction, planting, and ongoing care," according to organizers.

Co-curated by Wakefield and Kaitlin Garcia-Maestas, Desert X will be free for attendees. Visitors can find pictures of the structure and more information on the exhibition at desertx.org.

San Bernardino council OKs $13.8M Seccombe Lake Park revamp

The San Bernardino City Council has approved nearly $13.8 million to renovate Seccombe Lake Park, officials announced Monday.

The spending includes a $10.5 million construction contract with North Hollywood-based Landscape Support Services, according to the city. The project's goal is to revitalize the park with new amenities while restoring and improving existing infrastructure.

“The planning and funding of the improvements at Seccombe Lake Park have been several years in the making,” Mayor Helen Tran said in a statement. “We are excited that the Park’s transformation is about to begin.”

Other new additions will include conduits for EV charging stations, ADA upgrades, new fishing stations around the lake, upgraded drinking fountains and trash enclosures, and the installation of palm tree solar lighting.

Riverside-based RHA

Major upgrades planned for the 44-acre recreation facility include restoration of park's the signature lake and the island in the middle of the lake, new landscaping and irrigation, gazebo renovation and upgrades to restrooms and basketball courts, new lighting throughout the park, new concrete walking paths, new playground equipment and large shade sails, dog park improvements and fresh pavement for the parking lot, officials said.

Landscape Architects prepared the plans for the renovation.

Officials expected work on the renovation project to start in late February or early March and take about a year to complete. CSG Consultants is contracted to provide the project's construction management and inspection services.

Project funding is from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, as well as a $1 million donation in 2022 from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, officials said.

Seccombe Lake Park, located east of downtown at 160 E. Fifth St., is the second-largest park in San Bernardino.

Another large-scale park project — the $8.8 million ARPA-funded renovation of

February or March.

Trial begins for man accused of selling friend fatal dose of fentanyl

Prosecutiontestimony got underway Monday in the trial of a man accused of supplying the fentanyl-laced pills that caused the death of his 29-year-old friend in Norco.

Jacob Austin Parr, 45, is charged with second-degree murder for the 2022 death of Isaak Quintin Ruiz.

Following several weeks of jury selection at the Riverside Hall of Justice, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Timothy Hollenhorst swore in a panel on Monday to hear the case, after which the prosecution and defense delivered opening statements, and prosecutors summoned their first witnesses.

Parr is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center.

According to a defense brief filed in April, Parr and Ruiz had been friends for several years, but Parr had only sold narcotics to the victim periodically in the four months prior to his death.

Testimony by sheriff's investigators during the defendant's 2023 preliminary hearing indicated Ruiz had attempted to kick his drug habit, even trying to detox in a rehabilitation program, but he continued to "struggle with opiates."

"The decedent's girlfriend ... told police that he struggled with addiction and went from using heroin to fentanyl," the defense brief stated. "She said that it was difficult for him to resist smoking whatever substance he had in his possession."

Court papers said that Parr was endeavoring to put his life on track and quit using or selling drugs, but when Ruiz couldn't acquire substances from other sources, he turned to the defendant.

"(Ruiz) rejected offers for less lethal opiates and said he would save his money for 'fetty,'" the brief said.

In a text exchange

between the victim and defendant in February 2022, Parr warned, "You gotta be careful, bro'. This (expletive) will kill you if you haven't used in a while," according to the narrative.

At one point, before allegedly selling fentanyl to Ruiz, the defendant offered him Narcan, an opioid antagonist that can arrest the effects of fentanyl and save victims who have taken a potentially lethal amount, the brief said. However, Ruiz evidently did not accept it.

"Fentanyl users seek it because it is stronger than heroin," according to the brief. "Many users know the risks involved with fentanyl, but prefer it over heroin because it is cheaper and stronger. Most people who use fentanyl understand that it is dangerous."

On the night of April 22, 2022, Parr met Ruiz at a Norco restaurant, allegedly selling him an undetermined amount of fentanyl, then the two left in Parr's car and

drove to a nearby 76 Station on Sixth Street, where Ruiz stepped into the small men's room and locked the door, according to investigators.

Parr drove away.

The victim consumed the fentanyl he'd purchased and passed out on the floor. He was in there for two hours before the clerk finally unlocked the door to check on him, discovering him dead, according to preliminary hearing testimony.

Detectives ultimately identified Parr as the person who allegedly sold the fentanyl to the victim, culminating in his arrest on July 12, 2022. The defendant has a prior conviction for misdemeanor DUI.

Since February 2021, the District Attorney's Office has charged over 30 people countywide in connection with fentanyl poisonings.

Last November, prosecutors closed the books on the county's first fentanyl murder case to go before a jury, culminating in the

conviction of 34-year-old Vicente David Romero, who was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the 2020 death of a Temecula woman.

According to public health statistics, there were 550 known fentanyl-related fatalities countywide in 2023, a 9% increase from 2022, when there were 503.

Fentanyl is manufactured in overseas labs, principally in China, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement

Administration, which says the drug is smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border by cartels. It's 80-100 times more potent than morphine and can be mixed into any number of street narcotics and prescription drugs, without a user knowing what he or she is consuming. Ingestion of only two milligrams can be fatal. Fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans between 18 and 45 years old.

Biden to issue a preemptive pardon to protect possible targets from prosecution by President-elect Donald Trump's Justice Department.

Trump had said members of Congress — one of whom was Schiff — who investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot involving Trump supporters should be imprisoned. The presidentelect said he would leave decisions up to incoming Attorney General Pam Bondi, a Trump appointee.

Schiff said a preemptive pardon would set a partisan precedent and was unnecessary.

On Friday, Schiff cast his final House vote and thanked his constituents in Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Hollywood and nearby areas.

"I'm really looking forward to serving you in the U.S. Senate, and I want to thank the people all over California for that opportunity," Schiff posted on social media. "We have so much to do."

Adam Schiff

He noted meetings with Senate Republicans and Democrats and his observation of a "real culture" of finding common ground.

Butler is a longtime adviser to Harris and was California's first openly LGBTQ person in the U.S. Senate, the first Black lesbian to openly serve in Congress and the third Black female senator.

"As I end this journey as the junior senator representing 40 million Californians, it is a day that I want to thank them and thank Governor Newsom for giving me the honor and privilege of serving our great state," Butler said in a 14-minute departing speech on the Senate floor.

She said it was a "remarkable honor" to follow in Feinstein's footsteps and walk the same hallways as former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, the first Black woman to serve as assistant majority leader, and Harris.

"As policymakers, it is up to us to plant seeds that will inspire future generations to understand and imagine what is possible," Butler posted on social media. "While my time in the Senate is over, my work to plant those seeds will continue on."

In a statement Sunday, Newsom said, "When Senator Laphonza Butler took her seat in the Senate a year ago, she brought with her a lifetime of lessons learned from organizing and advocating for opportunity and justice. In just a short time, she has left an indelible mark — proving that true leadership isn't measured by the length of service, but by the depth of impact."

Newsom's office added that while in the Senate, Butler advocated for policies to bolster worker protections, increase wages, expand affordable housing and create economic opportunities for all state residents.

"doing crowd control as well as some demonstrations. When he turned around the back side of a car, he lost his balance on the bike. His foot slipped off the peg and it caused him to have to grip the handlebars, which caused the bike to accelerate at a rapid speed."

The chief has vowed to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the crash, acknowledging video posted online and reports that the officer may have popped the clutch of the bike and been performing wheelies.

Mills told KESQ on Monday that "wheelies or clutch pops" would be prohibited in future demonstrations. His words came two days after Palm Springs public information officer Kitty Alvarado released a statement referring to "rumors about the officer doing tricks on his motorcycle," calling those claims "inaccurate."

In a statement Sunday, Mills said he is "aware of social media accounts containing video of the accident. There is

also video of officers demonstrating traffic control maneuvers. All of the video available to us will be analyzed and included in the investigation conducted by the California Highway Patrol. Once I have a full understanding of what took place, what caused the accident, and what we could have done differently, I will report back to the community our findings. I appreciate the overwhelming support from Palm Springs."

The chief said he visited the injured officer Sunday along with Mayor Jeffery Bernstein and City Manager Scott Stiles, and Merenda "was alert and conversant. The doctors at Desert Regional are amazing and I am happy to report he will likely recover mobility in his hand. Kenney expressed deep concern for all of those injured and wishes them a full and speedy recovery. Of the 11 others transported for care, two were kept by the hospital for further treatment."

Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein also promised to get to the bottom of what caused the

accident.

"As mayor, I take this very seriously. I also know that Palm Springs is unique. We have the community that can and will join in unison to overcome the most difficult of circumstances," Bernstein said on social media Saturday.

The CHP asked that anyone who has video or images showing the accident send them to PSCityGovernmentMedia@palmspringsca. gov.

The annual celebration was held at 401 S. Pavilion Way from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Saturday and featured floats, dance performances, giant balloons and a variety of special guests.

Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum was the celebrity grand marshal and Madchen Amick, known for her role in the CW show "Riverdale," was honorary grand marshal. Miss California Kimberly Vernon and Nancy Sinatra were also featured in the parade, which continued after authorities cleared the scene of the accident.
