Deadly Eaton Canyon fire’s advance slows, but still no containment

Some evacuation orders were lifted Thursday as fire crews worked to establish containment around a 10,000-acre brush fire in the Eaton Canyon area that has left at least five people dead and destroyed or damaged about 1,000 structures.

The Eaton Fire was reported at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive in the hills above Altadena amid hurricaneforce Santa Ana winds, according to Cal Fire.

By 11 p.m. Wednesday, Cal Fire reported the fire had grown to 10,600 acres and was 0% contained.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said Thursday morning the spread of the fire had been significantly slowed thanks to efforts of firefighters and diminishing winds.

He noted that there have been numerous injuries, although no specific numbers were provided, and he said more than 1,000 structures were damaged or destroyed in the fire.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said Wednesday between 200 and 500 structures had been destroyed, and another 13,000 structures were at risk. More than 32,500 residents were placed under evacuation orders in the nearby regions including Pasadena and Altadena, she said.

Among the structures destroyed in the fire was the Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center.

The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation reported that the Eaton Canyon Nature Center, Farnsworth Park’s Davies Community Center, which is listed on the National Register of Historic

Places, the Altadena Golf Course Club House and adjacent buildings were destroyed.

Marrone told reporters Wednesday morning that two people -- described only as civilians -- died in the fire, but the circumstances of the deaths were unknown.

County Sheriff Robert Luna said Wednesday afternoon that the death toll had risen to five.

Luna on Thursday declined to give an update on possible fatalities, saying he was “not satisfied with some of the information” he was receiving. He said the sheriff’s department was working with the county medical examiner, and investigators will eventually make a more thorough search of the Eaton Fire and other fire areas, noting that “some of them look

like a bomb was dropped on them.”

There were also few specifics on injuries. Marrone said earlier there were “a number of significant injuries” due to the fire, adding that many injuries that occurred in the various fires occurred among people who failed to heed evacuation orders.

Initially dubbed the Close Fire but later changed to the Eaton Fire, the blaze quickly exploded in size after it began Tuesday night, driven by the same Santa Ana winds that sparked numerous other wildfires in the L.A. area. The erratic winds grounded aerial firefighting assets Tuesday night, and ground crews were unable to keep pace with the flames’ advance overnight.

Firefighting aircraft were able to resume flights Wednesday morning.

Lisa Brounstein and her husband lost their 100-yearold Altadena home on West Harriet Street. They evacuated on Tuesday night after grabbing a handful of items, including some clothes, their computers and the contents of their safe.

“We left behind so much, including all the tools and materials for my small business. We were sure we were going back this morning when the winds died down and the fire danger was over,” she said. “Instead, early this morning we got a notification from our alarm system that a smoke detector detected fire. Then one by one, all the

Palisades Fire turns deadly; more than 5,300 structures believed destroyed

So far 20 people have been arrested in the multiple Los Angeles County fire zones for allegedly looting, authorities said Thursday as they pledged a crackdown on any crimes connected with the disaster that has claimed at least two lives, destroyed hundreds of structures and forced evacuations.

“This is simply unacceptable,” Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger said of the looting. She vowed accountability for “those who are preying on our residents at this time of crisis.”

Sheriff Robert Luna said approximately 400 department personnel have been deployed in the fire zones and are on the lookout for looters. He told reporters it is a misdemeanor for unauthorized individuals to be in an evacuation area, and committing a crime in a disaster area is a felony. The sheriff said he is instructing deputies to aggressively enforce those restrictions and arrest people found in the burn areas.

“I’m going to make this crystal clear to everybody out there,” Luna said. “Over last night and this morning, we are up to 20 individuals who chose to go into our areas and deprive these poor people who have been through so much of their property. Absolutely unacceptable. ...

“If you are in one of these areas and you do not belong there, you are going to be subject to arrest,” Luna said. “I hope that is as clear as I can make it.”

District Attorney Nathan Hochman said “these criminals need to hear ... an unmistakably clear message that if you want to ahead and loot, if you want to commit burglary, if you want to commit grand theft ... you will be arrested, you will be prosecuted and you will be punished to the full extent of the law.”

“These acts are despicable,” Hochman said.

In a statement Tuesday, Hochman said, “Let me be clear: if you think about exploiting this crisis to steal from our residents, you will be caught, arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We will not tolerate criminal behavior that further harms our community during this difficult time.”

The county’s five active wildfires have burned roughly 29,000 acres total since they began during Tuesday’s windstorm.

OC grand jury praises election integrity in Orange County

Last year’s election in Orange County was free of any evidence of fraud, according to a grand jury report issued Tuesday.

Prompted by complaints from residents questioning the integrity of the voting, the grand jury investigated the election process from observing how votes were collected to how they were counted and how reviews of the tabulations were done.

The grand jury found “no evidence of fraud or election interference” in the 2024 general election in the county and that voting in the county “is fair, secure and transparent.”

The grand jury praised the Orange County Registrar of Voters for its various outreach programs to educate the public about voting. And, in a rare instance, the grand jury offered no recommendations.

“The entire (Registrar of Voters) staff is highly commended for their excel-

lent performance in the coordination and management of the 2024 presidential election,” the grand jury reported. “Their commitment to best practices supporting voting integrity, meticulous planning and rigorous security measures ensured that the voting process was fair, secure and transparent. The ROV upheld the highest standards of electoral integrity, thereby reinforcing public trust in this critical institution and setting an example for all government entities to follow in performing their public duties.”

Multiple critics of the voting system in place in California have been regularly complaining for the past four years to Orange County supervisors about fraud.

Many of the complaints revolve around debunked conspiracy theories about online vote switching and the length of time in which

it takes to tabulate ballots.

The grand jury noted that under state law, voting results are not due until Dec. 5 and that it takes time to count the mailed-in ballots that come into the Registrar of Voters following Election Day. In several cases, candidates ahead on the night of the election can find themselves on the losing end weeks later as mailed-in ballots trickle in, prompting cries of fraud from supporters of the losing candidates.

“Orange County is the seventh-largest voting district in the nation and its population exceeds that of 21 states,” the grand jury reported. “As a result, there are a significant number of votes to count.”

Voters are given until Dec. 1 to fix a ballot that may be marked up in a way that is confusing to the Registrar of Voters. Also, mailed-in ballots postmarked on Election Day must be counted within

seven days, and “thousands of ballots were received in this manner,” the grand jury reported.

“Every vote-by-mail ballot undergoes a signature verification process to ensure it matches the voter’s registration signature,” the grand jury

reported. “This step is time intensive, but essential for election integrity.”

In many cases “ballots are submitted in which the intent of the voter is clear, but the ballot cannot be read by the machine,” so a duplicate must be made for the machine to read it

Containment of Hurst Fire in Sylmar grows to 37%

Mandatory evacuations were lifted in the area impacted by the wind-driven Hurst Fire burning Friday in the Sylmar area as containment increased to 37%.

The Hurst Fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 5900 block of Yarnell Street, near Foothill Boulevard, and within a halfhour had burned more than 100 acres, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.

As of Thursday afternoon, the fire was mapped at 671 acres with 10% containment, according to Cal Fire. It grew to 771 acres by 9:10

p.m. with 37% containment. Evacuations were ordered for the area north of the Foothill (210) Freeway from Roxford Street to the Golden State (5) and Antelope Valley (14) Freeway split, but those orders were lifted on Thursday.

According to the LAFD, an evacuation warning remained in place for an area west of Interstate 5, Sunshine Canyon Landfill, Oak Tree Gun Club, north of Orcutt Lease Trail Road, south of East Canyon Mountainway, the Golden State Freeway east of East Canyon Mountainway, Sunshine Canyon Mountainway and west of

Ridge Fire Road. The Foothill Freeway was temporarily closed between Roxford and the Golden State Freeway on Wednesday, but eastbound lanes and mainline westbound lanes were reopened Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. Evacuation centers were set up in Pacoima, Northridge and Panorama City. They are at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center, 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd. in Pacoima; Northridge Park, 10120 Reseda Blvd. in Northridge; and Sepulveda Recreation Center, 8825 Kester Ave. in Panorama City.

For the evacuation of large animals, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center at 480 Riverside Drive in Burbank is available, according to the LAFD.

The Governor’s Office of Emergency Service estimated that more than 44,000 people in the area had been under evacuation orders, with 40,000 structures threatened.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded the state a Fire Management Assistance Grant to help fund the fight against the Hurst Fire, as it also did for the Palisades and Eaton fires, according to the governor’s office.

Awildfire that burned 395 acres in Acton was 75% contained Friday, and evacuation orders were lifted, according to authorities.

correctly, the grand jury reported.

The Registrar of Voters must also handle provisional ballots, which are allowed to be cast on Election Day but must be verified to ensure the voter is eligible to participate, the grand jury noted.

Lidia Fire in Acton burns 395 acres, 75% contained

After overnight operations

The Lidia Fire started around 2 p.m. Wednesday in the 5700 block of Soledad Canyon and grew quickly to cover hundreds of acres, prompting evacuation orders and warnings and the closure of Angeles National Forest — adding to the string of fires burning around the Southland.

Wednesday, fire crews were able to contain 60% of the fire by Thursday around noon, and were working to knock down the fire within its perimeter. Between Thursday and Friday, the fire increased from 348 acres to 395 acres, Cal Fire reported.

Soledad Canyon Road between Agua Dulce Canyon and Crown Valley Road were closed. Evacuation orders and warnings were in effect for those in the area of the fire.

There were no reports of injuries or damage.

Animal evacuation centers

have been set up at Castaic Animal Care Center, 31044 Charlie Canyon; Lancaster Animal Care Center, 5210 W. Ave., Lancaster; and Palmdale Animal Care Center, 38550 Sierra Highway, Palmdale. Metrolink suspended service on its Antelope Valley line between Vista Canyon and Lancaster due to the fire. The cause of the fire was unknown, but it broke out amid continuing Santa Ana wind conditions that were fueling major brush fires across the region.

DRams playoff game moved to Arizona due to fire concerns

ue to the continuing wildfire crisis in the Southland, Monday night’s Los Angeles Rams playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings was moved from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

According to a statement from the NFL, “the decision was made in consultation with public officials, the participating clubs and the (National Football League Players’ Association).”

State Farm Stadium is the home of the Arizona Cardinals. The playoff game will be televised at 5 p.m. Monday on ESPN, ABC, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes.

Rams season ticket holders were able to purchase tickets for the relocated game starting at 10 a.m. Friday through Seatgeek.com. Tickets for the general public went on sale at noon Friday.

Ticket holders for the game at SoFi Stadium received either a refund or a credit toward their season tickets next season, according to the Rams.

On Friday, the Rams announced support for the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the American Red Cross during the unprecedented series of devastating wildfires.

The Kroenke family, owners of the Rams, is making a $1 million donation to benefit the LAFD Foundation through the Kroenke Family Foundation. The LAFD Foundation helps both the Los Angeles county and city fire depart-

ments.

“On behalf of our family and the Los Angeles Rams, our thoughts are with everyone affected by the unfathomable fires and destruction,” the Kroenke family said in a statement. “We are beyond grateful for the tireless efforts of our first responders who continue to protect our community as well as individuals who continue to help our neighbors in need. We know there are both immediate and long-term needs and our family and the Rams are committed to doing our part to support

recovery efforts now and into the months and years ahead.”

In addition to the Kroenke’s donation, the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings and the NFL Foundation will join the Rams in each donating $1 million to help deliver vital resources to local organizations supporting those affected by the wildfires.

On Monday night, Rams players, coaches and staff will wear custom LAFD hats and shirts with the Rams monogram on them.

Game-worn jerseys and

select game-used footballs will be auctioned off on NFL Auction with proceeds going to the support American Red Cross, the team said Friday. Rams LAFD shirts are available for sale at RamsFanShop.com with all profits from the sales going to support the LAFD Foundation and American Red Cross, according to the team.

Fans looking to join the Rams in supporting the fire relief efforts may also donate to American Red Cross directly or to LAFD Foundation at supportlafd.kindful. com/?campaign=1040812.

Ex-FBI informant who lied about Bidens sentenced to six years in prison

An ex-FBI informant who once lived in Calabasas was sentenced Wednesday to six years behind bars for fabricating a story that President Joe Biden and son Hunter each took $5 million bribes from the owner of a Ukrainian energy company. Alexander Smirnov, 44, most recently a resident of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty last month to federal charges of creating a false record in a federal investigation and three counts of tax evasion for failing to

pay taxes and penalties on $2.1 million in income for 2020 through 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Smirnov, a dual U.S.Israeli citizen, was accused in a 37-page, two-count indictment of making false statements to FBI agents in June 2020, when he told them about meetings with an executive from Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company that employed Hunter Biden as an attorney and later as a member of its

corporate board.

The defendant also told agents that Burisma executives made $5 million payments to both Joe and Hunter Biden when Joe Biden was vice president, papers filed in LA federal court show.

No evidence emerged that the allegations against the Bidens were true, but the story was taken up by some Republicans, who made the unverified claims part of their effort to impeach President Biden.

According to his plea deal, Smirnov must pay $675,502 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service for the tax charges. U.S. District Judge Otis Wright II also ordered a special assessment of $400, the judgment order shows. Upon release from prison, Smirnov will be placed on supervised release for a term of one year, Wright ordered. Smirnov’s attorneys had asked for no more than four years imprisonment.

Fierce winds nix Biden’s Chuckwalla National Monument announcement

Ahistoricallyfierce windstorm Tuesday in Southern California that has caused destructive wildfires prompted President Joe Biden to cancel a trip from Los Angeles to the Coachella Valley, where he was to announce two national monuments in the state, including Chuckwalla in Riverside County.

The president and first lady Jill Biden arrived at LA International Airport aboard Air Force One on Monday morning from New Orleans, where they met with families and community members affected by the New Year’s Day terror attack on Bourbon Street that left 15 people dead and dozens injured, according to the White House.

Biden had been scheduled to travel to Thermal in Riverside County early Tuesday afternoon to officially announce the Chuckwalla National Monument near just south of Joshua Tree National Park and also the Sáttítla National Monument in Northern California. The two monuments will protect 848,000 acres of land that are of “scientific, cultural, ecological and historical importance,” according to the White House.

After considering having Biden make the monument announcement from the LA area, White House officials said later that the event would take place next week “so that key stakeholders can attend.” Details of the rescheduled event were not immediately available.

Instead, Biden remained at his hotel in the Santa Monica/West LA area, where he received briefings on the Palisades Fire and other active wildfires in the region.

According to the White House, the president and first lady left their hotel Wednesday morning to travel to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where his 31-year-old granddaughter Naomi gave birth to a daughter via Cesarean section. The Bidens arrived at the hospital at about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday and spent roughly 40 minutes there.

Biden’s son Hunter, Naomi’s father, arrived at the hospital with his wife Melissa and son Beau. Biden said later Naomi had given birth to a 10-pound baby girl, his first great-grandchild. He has seven grandchildren.

The Bidens left the hospital shortly before 11

a.m. Wednesday en route to Santa Monica Fire Station 5 near Santa Monica Airport to receive the wildfire briefing.

“We’re doing anything and everything and as long as it takes to contain these fires ... to make sure you get back to normal,” Biden said after hearing from local officials. “It’s going to be a hell of a long way. It’s going to take time.”

The Bidens then flew via helicopter from Santa Monica Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, where they boarded Air Force One for a flight back to Washington, D.C.

It was unclear if Biden would return to the Southland next week for the national monument announcement.

The Chuckwalla National Monument will preserve more than 624,000 acres of public land and is Biden’s “capstone action to create the largest corridor of protected lands in the continental United States, covering nearly 18 million acres stretching approximately 600 miles,” according to the White House. “This new Moab to Mojave Conservation Corridor protects wildlife habitat and a wide range of natural and cultural resources along the Colorado River, across the Colorado Plateau, and into the deserts of California. It is a vitally important cultural and spiritual landscape that has been inhabited and traveled by Tribal Nations and Indigenous peoples since time

immemorial.”

Biden was also set to officially announce Tuesday the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument in Northern California, which will encompass more than 224,000 acres of varied habitat that includes areas of the Modoc, Shasta-Trinity and Klamath national forests.

The Moab to Mojave Conservation Corridor stretches from Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southwestern Utah, to which Biden restored protections in 2021, through Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni — Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument in Arizona and Avi Kwa Ame National Monument in Nevada, which received federal protection in 2023, officials said. The corridor reaches the deserts and mountains of Southern California with the designation of the Chuckwalla National Monument.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, who was scheduled to attend Biden’s event in Riverside County said in a statement Tuesday, “California is now home to two new national monuments that honor the tribes that have stewarded these lands since time immemorial. Thanks to President Biden and the leadership of California tribes and local communities, we’re protecting 840,000 acres of some of our state’s most culturally significant lands. This is a huge boost for our efforts to

protect 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters.”

The monument designation outlaws energyrelated drilling or mining and protects the ancestral homelands and cultural landscapes of the Cahuilla, Chemehuevi, Mojave, Quechan and Serrano nations and other Indigenous peoples, according to the White House. The new monument has five distinct areas that encompass sacred sites, ancient trails, historic properties, cultural areas, religious sites, petroglyphs, geoglyphs and pictographs.

Tribal nations and Indigenous peoples in the region lived and traveled through the areas now protected by the monument. One such location is the southern edge of a travel route that stretched north and east through what are now the Avi Kwa Ame and Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni, known as the Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monuments.

Leaders from Southern California tribes went to the nation’s capital last year to advocate for protecting the homelands of local Indigenous cultures.

“Since time immemorial, we have called the lands in the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument home,” Secretary Altrena Santillanes of the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians said in an August statement.

“These lands contain thousands of cultural places and objects of vital importance to the history and identity of

and animals, including the desert bighorn sheep, Agassiz’s desert tortoise, and the iconic Chuckwalla lizard, from which the monument gets its name.”

Officials said the monument will improve wildlife’s access habitats and safeguard clean water for over 40 million people via protections for the Colorado River region. The monument will also offer outdoor recreation opportunities for historically underserved communities in the Coachella Valley.

Officials also noted the monument’s synergy with clean energy.

the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla

Interior Department Secretary Deb Haaland said in a statement Tuesday, “The stunning canyons and winding paths of the Chuckwalla National Monument represent a true unmatched beauty. It was my honor to visit this area to explore and meet with federal, state, Tribal and local leaders to hear about the need to protect and conserve this sacred area. President Biden’s action today will protect important spiritual and cultural values tied to the land and wildlife. I am so grateful that future generations will have the opportunity to experience what makes this area so unique.”

The Chuckwalla National Monument is just south of Joshua Tree National Park in southeastern Riverside County and is located at the confluence of the Mojave and Colorado deserts.

The area’s natural features include “mountain ranges, canyons and washes, dramatic rock formations, palm oases and desert-wash woodlands.

“Its natural wonders include the Painted Canyon of Mecca Hills, where visitors can wind through towering rock walls and marvel at the landscape’s dramatic geologic history, and Alligator Rock, a ridge that has served as a milestone for travelers for millennia,” according tot the White House. “The region is also home to more than 50 rare species of plants

“The monument upholds the balance of natural and cultural resource protection and renewable energy development that a wide range of stakeholders forged for the region through the Department of the Interior’s 2016 Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan,” according to the White House. “The new national monument will allow the construction and expansion of electric transmission and distribution within the monument to transport clean energy to western cities. Additionally, the designation is consistent with the continued development of renewable energy projects sited in the DRECP’s Development Focus Areas, many of which are near or adjacent to the monument.”

In 2024 at least 24 members of Congress from California, including Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Indio, and U.S. Sens. Alex Padilla and Laphonza Butler, called for a Presidential Proclamation under the 1906 Antiquities Act to officially establish the national monument.

The Chuckwalla monument also drew support from a number of tribal leaders and representatives, at least eight city councils in the Coachella Valley and more than 225 area businesses and organizations.

“For the Quechan people, a national monument designation status for the land means preserving the lifeways, culture, stories and teachings that connect us to our past, present and future,” Donald Medart Jr. of the Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe Council said in a statement.

Wildfire devastation: How to help

Asmajorwildfires raged unchecked and destroyed hundreds of structures in the Southland, driven by the worst Santa Ana winds to hit the region in more than a decade, organizations and residents stepped up to the plate Wednesday to help those affected.

The winds were fueling multiple brush fires in the LA area, the largest being a more than 20,000-acre blaze in Pacific Palisades. Another massive brush fire in the Eaton Canyon area above Altadena claimed five lives, while other blazes raged in Sylmar and Acton.

Hundreds of structures were damaged or destroyed in the blazes, with more than 1,000 buildings believed to have been lost in the Palisades Fire alone.

National Weather Service forecasters said the wind-

storm was the worst to hit the region since 2011. Here is a list of places to help:

-- Screen Actors Guild: To support impacted members of the SAG community, donations can be made to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, which operates a natural disaster relief fund, members. sagfoundation.org/donate

DGA announces nominees for coveted feature film directing honor

Golden Globe-winning director Brady Corbet was among five people nominated Wednesday for the coveted Directors Guild of America Award for feature films, an honor that typically foretells success on Oscar night.

Corbet was nominated for directing “The Brutalist.” Also nominated were Jacques Audiard for “Emilia Pérez,” Sean Baker for “Anora,” Edward Berger for “Conclave” and James Mangold for “A Complete Unknown.”

Since 1948, there have only been eight times that the winner of the DGA award for feature film directing has not gone on to win the Oscar for best director. The most recent time was in 2020,

when Sam Mendes won the DGA Award for “1917,” but the Oscar went to Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite.” Christopher Nolan won the DGA Award and the Oscar last year for “Oppenheimer.”

Nominations for the DGA’s Award for first-time

theatrical films went to Payal Kapadia for “All We Imagine as Light,” Megan Park for “My Old Ass,” Ramell Ross for “Nickel Boys,” Halfdan Ullmann Tondel for “Armand” and Sean Wang for “Didi.”

Winners will be announced Feb. 8 during ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Ang Lee, best known for helming films including “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “Life of Pi,” will receive the DGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the organization announced in December.

Nominees in the television, commercial and documentary categories were announced Tuesday.

‘Wicked,’ ‘Shogun’ lead SAG award nominations with 5 apiece

“ Wicked” garnered a leading five nominations in the movie categories Wednesday for the 31st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards — including one for cast performance, SAG’s equivalent of best picture — while “Shogun” matched it with five nods to top television contenders.

Wednesday morning’s announcements came via a news release rather than the originally planned live event that had been set to air on Netflix’s YouTube channel, in light of the wildfires and treacherous winds threatening much of the Southland.

SAG officials cited “an abundance of caution for the safety of our presenters, guests, and staff” in announcing the live announcement’s cancellation — while opening Wednesday’s news release by saying, “We want to take a moment to acknowledge the devastating fires affecting Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted — the residents, first responders, and all those working tirelessly to protect the community.”

Joining “Wicked” among nominees for cast performance in a motion

picture were “A Complete Unknown”;“Anora”; “Conclave” and the Golden Globe dominator “Emilia Pérez.”

Besides its best cast nomination, “Wicked,” an adaptation of the Broadway musical, delivered nods to Cynthia Erivo for female actor in a leading role; Jonathan Bailey for male actor in a supporting role; Ariana Grande for female actor in a supporting role; and stunt ensemble in a motion picture.

Following “Wicked” among multiple nominees was “A Complete Unknown,” the story of Bob Dylan’s controversial switch to electric music at a 1965 folk concert, which snagged four film nominations, followed by “Emilia Pérez” and “Anora” with three nods each, and “Conclave” and “The Last Showgirl” with two apiece.

“Emilia Pérez” was coming off a leading 10 nominations in Sunday’s Golden Globes, where it captured four wins, including best motion picture/ musical or comedy.

Nominations for male actor in a leading role went to Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist”; Timothée

Report: Tax break for big oil costs CA

Anew report from nonprofit The Climate Center has unearthed historical documents that show the big oil companies orchestrated a tax break that allows them to avoid paying an estimated $75 million to $146 million a year.

The California Legislature adopted the so-called “Water’s Edge” tax policy in 1986.

Barry Vesser, chief operating officer with The Climate Center, said it allows companies to decide which of their earnings are taxable in California, and exclude those linked to operations elsewhere, thus dramatically

Fiennes for “Conclave.”

For female actor in a leading role, nods went to Pamela Anderson for “The Last Showgirl”; Cynthia Erivo for “Wicked”; Karla Sofía Gascón for “Emilia Pérez”; Mikey Madison for “Anora” and Golden Globe winner Demi Moore for “The Substance.”

On the TV side, awardseason regular “The Bear” picked up four nods, including cast in a comedy series, followed by “The Diplomat” with three and 10 projects with two each.

HiroyukiSanada and Tadanobu Asano of “Shogun” each garnered a nomination for male actor in a drama series, and were joined by Jeff Bridges for “The Old Man”; Gary Oldman for “Slow Horses”; and Eddie Redmayne for “The Day of the Jackal.”

Anna Sawai picked up a female actor in a drama series nomination for her role on “Shogun,” and was joined in that category by Kathy Bates in “Matlock”; Nicola Coughlan in “Bridgerton”; and Allison Janney and Keri Russell in “The Diplomat.”

For male actor in a comedy series, award magnet Jeremy Allen White

of “The Bear” took another nomination, following up his win Sunday at the Golden Globes. Joining him in that category were Adam Brody for “Nobody Wants This”; Ted Danson for “A Man on the Inside”; Harrison Ford for “Shrinking”; and Martin Short for “Only Murders in the Building.”

“The Bear” also grabbed a pair of nods for female actor in a comedy series — to Liza Colón-Zayas and Ayo Edebiri. They were joined by Kristen Bell in “Nobody Wants This”; Quinta Brunson in “Abbott Elementary” and Sunday’s Golden Globe winner Jean Smart in “Hacks.”

The SAG Awards are often considered the most cherishedHollywood honors among performers because they are voted upon exclusively by other actors. They are also historically strong predictors of who will win on Oscar night. Winners will be announced Feb. 25 from the Shrine Auditorium during a 5 p.m. telecast that will stream live on Netflix. A complete list of nomineesannounced Wednesday is available online at sagawards.org.

$75M to $146M a year

reducing what they owe in taxes.

“The report shows is that companies like Chevron and Shell and Exxon, back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, worked really hard to get this exemption into the tax code, in spite of the fact that lots of advocates and many people in government were saying that this is a bad idea, including the head of the Franchise Tax Board at the time,” Vesser explained.

The report estimates that “Water’s Edge” costs California about $4 billion a year across all industries. The oil companies argue that it is unfair for a state to tax their global earnings. However,

oil-rich Alaska prohibits this type of tax exemption.

Climate advocates are pressing California lawmakers to end all subsidies for these companies in budget negotiations this spring. Vesser noted that last year, California’s budget cut billions from climate programs to help fill a $46 billion deficit. Meanwhile, Chevron, Shell and Exxon reported $83 billion in profits in 2023.

“Oil and gas companies spent $31.4 million in 2024,” he continued. “They broke a record even in the first three-quarters of all-time spending at the California

State Legislature. So, these companies are working to undermine sensible public policy outcomes.”

Assemblymember Damon Conolly, D-San Rafael, said in a statement that eliminating the Water’s Edge tax break for multinational oil and gas corporations is a commonsense solution to make polluting industries pay their fair share to fix the environmental and health problems they helped create.

Palisades Fire turns deadly; more than 5,300 structures believed destroyed

The nearly 20,000-acre wildfire that leveled much of Pacific Palisades and left at least two dead, including one body that was removed from the rubble of a home along Pacific Coast Highway, was 6% contained Friday.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said during a late-afternoon briefing Thursday that two people had died in the fire, although no details were provided.

Earlier Thursday, however, representatives of the county Medical Examiner’s Office removed human remains from the ruins of a home in the vicinity of Duke’s restaurant in Malibu. Officials from the sheriff’s department told reporters at the scene that deputies received a missing person report, prompting them to conduct a welfare check at the burnedout home, where the remains were discovered.

No other details were immediately available. Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart issued a statement saying the “tragic news weighs heavily on our hearts.”

“This is a painful reminder of the profound impact this fire is having on our community,” Stewart said. “Malibu is more than a city — we are neighbors, friends, and family. Even when we don’t know someone’s name, their loss is felt by all of us. In times like this, we must come together, support one another, and show the resilience that defines our community.”

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said another death occurred at a home in the 15300 block of Friends Street in Pacific Palisades. He said police and the medical examiner responded to the scene, and determined the death was “fire-related.” No other details were released.

Speaking to reporters Thursday morning, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna declined to give any specific updates on deaths that have occurred in the various fires burning in the region. He previously announced five deaths tied to the Eaton Fire burning in the Altadena and Pasadena area, but said he wanted to verify details about other possible fatalities before releasing additional information.

The Palisades Fire was reported around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Piedra Morada and Monte Hermoso drives, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman David

Ortiz. It continued to grow exponentially Tuesday and Wednesday thanks to heavy fuel loads and powerful Santa Ana winds.

By 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, the fire was mapped at 17,234 acres, with 0% containment, according to Cal Fire. On Thursday afternoon, however, Cal Fire released a statement saying a new aerial assessment put the size of the fire at 19,978 acres.

Early Thursday evening, Cal Fire reported that the crews had finally begun establishing a line around the fire, with containment listed at 6%.

The aerial survey also determined that about 5,316 structures may have been destroyed by the fire. Those “structures” could include residential and commercial properties and smaller structures such as RVs, sheds or other “minor buildings.”

“It is safe to say the Palisades Fire is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of Los Angeles,” Crowley said during a Thursday morning briefing. Video from the fire zone painted pictures of total devastation, with flames jumping from home to home, structure to structure throughout the Palisades area.

The cause of the fire was

all grounded at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday due to escalating winds. Some aircraft returned to the firefight on Wednesday.

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued across a wide area generally stretching from Kenter Avenue on the east, Mulholland Drive on the north, Topanga Canyon Boulevard on the west and

ordered:

-- north of Pacific Coast Highway, south of Rambla Pacifio Street, east of Carbon Beach Terrace and west of Las Flores Mesa Drive;

-- north of Pacific Coast Highway, south of Budwood Matway, east of Las Flores Mesa Drive and west of Old Malibu Road; and

bound Sunset Boulevard then to southbound Pacific Coast Highway. However, the evacuation routes quickly filled with vehicles Tuesday afternoon, prompting some people to simply pull over near Palisades and Sunset, exit their cars and walk out of the area on foot.

LAFD officials said about

the Pacific Ocean on the south.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Anthony Marrone said there were a “high number of significant injuries to residents who did not evacuate, in addition to

-- north of Rambla Pacifico Street, south of Pauma Road, Las Flores Canyon Road and Rambla Pacifico, east of Carbon Canyon Road and west of Gorge Road.

Other areas in Malibu were placed under evacuation

unknown. It erupted amid fierce Santa Ana winds that forecasters called the worst windstorm in the Southland in a decade. The peak gusts of the wind event slammed the fire area between 10 p.m. Tuesday and early Wednesday morning, though red flag warnings of critical fire danger were expected to be in place until Friday evening.

Air tankers and waterdropping helicopters made drops throughout daylight hours Tuesday as firefighters from across the region rushed to the scene, but they were

first responders who were on the fire lines.”

With the fire expanding to the east, Santa Monica issued a mandatory evacuation order for all residents north of Montana Avenue from the ocean to 11th Street, and north of San Vicente Boulevard between Ocean Boulevard and 26th Street. An evacuation warning was issued for all other residents north of Montana Avenue.

The Malibu also issued evacuation orders as the flames advanced into that city. Evacuations were

warnings.

Evacuation centers were established at the Westwood Recreation Center, Pasadena Convention Center and at El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills.

Large animals can be taken to Pierce College in Woodland Hills or the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank. Small animals can be taken to the Agoura Animal Care Center and Pasadena Humane Society.

Evacuees were initially instructed to travel south on Palisades Drive to west-

Several other people were treated for burn injuries in the area of Duke’s restaurant along Pacific Coast Highway, Scott said. It was also unclear how those injuries occurred, or how many people were affected.

Video from the fire line earlier in the week showed structures burning on the campus of Palisades Charter High School, which was closed this week. Theatre Palisades on Temescal Canyon Road — near the high school — was completely engulfed in flames. At least two elementary schools were also believed to have burned.

Iconic eateries in the area such as the Reel Inn and Cholada Thai were also destroyed.

30 vehicles were abandoned at the location, and a bulldozer was used to push some of the vehicles out of the intersection to prevent them from blocking traffic in and out of the area.

Pacific Coast Highway remains closed north of the McClure Tunnel and through the fire area. The westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway remains closed at Lincoln Boulevard.

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger signed an emergency proclamation in response to the fire, and the city of Los Angeles also issued an emergency declaration. Gov. Gavin Newsom later signed a state of emergency proclamation.

Newsom, noting that President Joe Biden was in the Los Angeles area when the fire erupted, said Biden had given immediate approval to federal funding to help cover costs of the firefighting effort. Biden announced Thursday that the emergency funding, which normally covers 75% of costs relating to firefighting and recovery efforts, will cover 100% of the costs for 180 days.

On Tuesday night, LAFD Capt. Erik Scott said a 25-year-old female firefighter suffered a serious head injury while fighting the Palisades Fire and was taken to a hospital. The circumstances of the injury were unknown.

The Getty Villa museum in Pacific Palisades was not damaged, and it will remain closed until at least Monday. Katherine Fleming, president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, issued a statement Tuesday evening saying that the staff and art collection at the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades “remain safe,” although “some trees and vegetation on site have burned.”

The Villa, which houses a treasured collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, is normally closed to the public on Tuesdays.

“Fortunately, Getty had made extensive efforts to clear brush from the surrounding area as part of its fire mitigation efforts throughout the year,” Fleming said. “Some trees and vegetation on site have burned, but staff and the collection remain safe.

“Additional fire prevention measures in place at the Villa include water storage on-site. Irrigation was immediately deployed throughout the grounds Tuesday morning. Museum galleries and library archives were sealed off from smoke by state-of-the-art air handling systems. The double-walled construction of the galleries also provides significant protection for the collections.”

Getty officials also said their Brentwood museum near the San Diego (405) Freeway would be closed until at least Sunday, Jan. 12 “out of caution and to help alleviate traffic in the area.”

SoCalGas shut off natural gas service to the Malibu community from Brentwood Country Club to Pepperdine University. As a result, about 15,000 customers in the impacted communities were experiencing temporary service outages, according to SoCalGas’ Chris Gilbride.

LAHSA touts improvements on outreach, permanent housing performance

More people were moved into permanent and interim housing during the 2023-24 fiscal year, signifying improved performance for the county’s rehousing system, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority announced.

According to the agency, data showed a 45% increase in homeless people moving from the street to permanent housing, a 32% increase for temporary housing and a 29% increase of homeless people moving from temporary to permanent housing.

The improvements reflect a recent announcement from U.S. Housing and Urban Development, which noted that homelessness increased by 18% nationwide, but Los Angeles was among a few jurisdictions that experienced a decrease.

“This data shows that

our changes to LAHSA and the rehousing system are working,” Va Lecia Adams Kellum, CEO of LAHSA, said in a statement Jan. 3. “We are getting more people off the street and into a permanent home.”

LAHSA cited new initiatives for the improved numbers. In 2023, the agency implemented its encampment resolution efforts to address tents and other makeshift housing through Mayor Karen Bass’ Inside Safe initiative and the county’s Pathway Home program.

Additionally, LAHSA established a dedicated group called the Active System Management Strike Team to address bottlenecks in the rehousing system. The agency also touted its batch matching approach and a master leasing initiative.

Batch matching allows the

agency to identify multiple individuals for supportive housing through a universal housing application. According to the agency, once someone moves into supportive housing, other applicants are eligible the next time there are building openings in the same area.

Through master leasing, LAHSA leases entire apartment buildings, which can save time for people to enter housing in just a few weeks compared to months.

Among other improvements, the agency has updated its data dashboards for better tracking of beds.

“The new LAHSA is about change, better data, faster payments, and creating the innovations and partnerships that get results,” Adams Kellum said. “We are on the right path to improving the system and bringing

more people home in L.A. County.”

In November 2024, the County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to explore the creation of a department to centralize homeless services. The motion came in response to

Adding to an already brutalfirestorm, another brush fire erupted in the West Hills area, consuming nearly 1,000 acres of terrain and forcing mandatory evacuations that were later lifted as the fire burned into Ventura County Friday.

Meanwhile, a person was detained for questioning Thursday in the nearby Woodland Hills area shortly after the fire started, although it was unclear if the person had any connection to the Kenneth Fire.

As of 11 p.m. Thursday, the fire was about 1,000 acres

and 35% contained, according to Cal Fire.

The Kenneth Fire was reported around 3:30 p.m. in an area north of the Ventura (101) Freeway near Valley Circle Boulevard. Initially reported at 20 acres, it quickly expanded to 50 acres, and within 90 minutes it exploded to 791 acres, pushed by continuing Santa Ana winds.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued for the people between Vanowen and Burbank Boulevard, from County Lane Road east to Valley Circle Boulevard, but shortly before 5:30 p.m., that mandatory order was

window monitors went off, letting us know the windows were open. That was when we knew our house was gone. It was later confirmed by two neighbors. ... We loved our little house. It was perfect! It had just turned 100 in 2024. This feels surreal.”

Residents of La Cañada Flintridge were ordered to evacuate by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Mandatory evacua-

tion orders were issued Tuesday for the area north of New York Drive, east of Altadena Drive and west of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, U.S. Forest Service officials reported.

As the fire grew, other evacuations were mandated in the area, including all Arcadia residents north of Orange Grove Avenue. Evacuation orders were also issued by Glendale city officials in Chevy Chase and Glenoaks canyons on Wednesday morning, those

a county Auditor-Controller Department report that cited several concerns about LAHSA’s management of homeless funding.

LAHSA leadership contended that several issues identified in the report were attributed to past practices during the coronavirus pandemic, much of which has changed.

Similarly, the Los Angeles City Council is also exploring the creation of a Homelessness Department citing longstanding concerns related to transparency.

reduced to an evacuation warning as the fire burned its way primarily into Ventura County.

All evacuation orders and warnings were lifted as of 8 p.m. Thursday and deputies were checking the ID’s of people moving through the area to be sure they were residents.

Police said they detained a man around 4:30 p.m. in the 21700 block of Ybarra Road after receiving reports of a possible arson suspect.

KTLA5 reported that residents in the area spotted the man and held him until police arrived.

Eaton Canyon fire

orders were lifted early Thursday.

An evacuation center was established at the Arcadia Community Center at 375 Campus Drive. Pasadena officials ordered evacuations for residents north of Orange Grove/ Rosemead Boulevard, east of Lake Avenue and west of Michilinda Avenue. An evacuation center for those residents was established at the Pasadena Civic Center, 300 E. Green St. Residents along Kinneloa

Canyon Road, Outpost Lane, Glen Springs Road, Coolidge Avenue, Roosevelt Avenue, Veranada Avenue, Kinclair Drive, Fox Ridge Drive, Canyon Close Road and Grand Oaks Avenue were all told to evacuate on Tuesday.

An evacuation center was also established at El Camino Real Charter High School, 5440 Valley Circle Blvd. in Woodland Hills for people impacted by the various fires in the Southland.

On Tuesday night, buses and ambulances were brought in to evacuate dozens of people from a senior center in the path of the fire. Staff at the center were seen on camera pushing residents down a street in wheelchairs to get them out of the area.

Crews from the U.S. Forest Service, Los Angeles County and Pasadena were working to slow the flames.

As he did earlier with the Palisades Fire, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced late

Tuesday that the state had secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cover costs of battling the Eaton Fire. As a result of the fire, the Glendale, Pasadena and Burbank unified school districts have canceled classes for the remainder of the week. Classes were also canceled Thursday in the Alhambra, South Pasadena, San Marino, La Cañada, Arcadia and Monrovia districts.
