Turning Rotten Dorothy's Place

By Dorothy Denne How long does it take for a day to change from good to rotten? It really depends on your sense of humor. Or lack of one for that matter. Probably more on your lack of one. If you have one that is good, your day is less likely to turn bad.

It isn’t really fair to call a day bad. Bad things may happen during the day but the day itself should be considered a gift. We are on our own to enjoy our gift or not. Sometimes outside forces make it difficult.

I’m not talking about the really tragic outside forces that cause real pain, either emotional or physical. I believe there are different ways of dealing with them too but for today I’m just concerned with the everyday little rotten things that seem like big rotten things.

Like today, I decided the only things as dangerous as old ladies with shopping carts are young ladies with strollers. They both gawk when they walk.

They don’t steer. They just gawk and push. You know what happens then.

What about the drivers who don’t know where they are going. Every driveway they slow to a near stop then shoot on to the next one before you can pass. Then they spot their target, pull way over to the left and then turn right, into their desired driveway.

You’ve survived to arrive at the parking lot entrance you want. Oncoming traffic is clear so you follow the guy in front of you across the lane and into the entrance. He stops right inside to decide which way he wants to go. Your rear end is still sticking out into the streeet. If you’re lucky he moves before you get moved.

You have to go to the post office. You don’t need any stamps or anything. You just have to mail a couple of bills so the drive-through will do just fine. There is a line of cars but they usually move quickly. That’s part of the idea. A couple of the cars go through just fine.

You’re getting closer.

The guy who just arrived at the boxes can’t

decide which one to put his mail in so he reads the pickup time on each of them.

He discovers they are all the same.

Then he has to check that he put a stamp on each envelope. All appears to be well so he pulls out and nicks the edge of the cement platform. His car swerves and the pedestrian coming along side has to jump out of the way.

This unnerves the old gal in front of you. She doesn’t want to hit the platform so she pulls over a bit.

Now she can’t reach the slot. She opens the door, careful not to hit the mailbox with it. She puts one leg out then reaches with all her might. She gives a thrust and her mail slips into the slot. Except one envelope. It falls under the mailbox.

She can’t get the door open far enough to get out of the car. You’re no spring chicken but you’re younger than she, so you feel obligated to help. You unfasten your seatbelt, get out and retrieve her letter.

She really is grateful. So is everyone behind you.

You’re finally on your way. Your shopping is done, your mail is mailed.

You’re half way through your day. It is a gift. It doesn’t have to turn rotten.

It depends on your sense of humor, or lack of one.

I know that you have done stories in the past about how residents should always keep an eye on kids and pets, that leaving out food and keeping outside cats is a bad idea, but it always bears repeating.

Schiff Receives Boost in Efforts to Improve Hearing Capabilities of Vets Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced that the Defense Appropriations bill includes $1 million he has requested for the House Ear Institute to conduct inner ear research to improve the hearing capabilities of combat veterans. Specifically, the funding will be used to advance research to inform a regenerative medicine approach to curing sensory deficits of the inner ear using unique technologies and DNA sequencing to develop gene expression libraries and develop cures for sensory hearing loss.

“Loss of hearing has profound effects for military operational readiness and quality of life,” Rep. Schiff said. “This project will support research that holds the promise of helping veterans suffering from hearing loss to regain their hearing.”

Hearing loss and tinnitus are the two most prevalent service-connect-

ed disabilities for veterans, especially for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. To date, no therapies for certain forms of hearing loss are available, but the research done by the House Ear Institute may provide critical answers and new therapies.

“A very significant percentage of the disability payments from the VA go to veterans who have lost their hearing; in addition to helping us enhance the quality of life for combat veterans by improving their hearing, this funding will also help to reduce overall VA payments,” said House Ear Institute President Dr. John House.

“Although the bill still has a few more legislative hurdles to clear, we are excited about the inclusion of funding in the bill and look forward to its passage so we can use it to ameliorate and prevent hearing loss for our veterans.”

Huntington Hospital Receives “Afghans for Angels,” Helping Parents who Suffer the Loss of a Newborn or Infant The death of a child whether by miscarriage, still birth or infant death is a devastating event in a parent’s life. Afghans for Angels, California Chapter, is an organization made of volunteers who make and distribute baby afghans to parents who have suffered the loss of their baby. The organization has been active throughout the United States since 1996, although the California Chapter is just two months old.

Huntington Memorial Hospital is one of five California hospitals that have recently begun receiving the beautiful baby blankets. The afghans are placed around the infants when they are held by their families for the brief time in which “hellos” and “goodbyes” are said. The parents are then allowed to keep the afghans as a token of remembrance.

hospitals throughout California, and is hoping to receive permission to deliver afghans to as many hospitals as possible. Afghans for Angels is seeking volunteers who have the time and talent to knit, crochet or quilt these special baby blankets.

The group also needs donations of yarn. The afghans are generally small, just 15” square to about 24” square, and therefore do not require much in the way of time and materials.

Afghans for Angels plans to reach out to residents in local senior facilities who would be interested in using the yarn to knit or crochet afghans. Only a phone is necessary for hospitals and volunteers to become active in the organization.

The Pro-Ride surface was very safe and it performed beautifully this past meet, except for the fact that we continue to have drainage issues through the (home) stretch and in particular, in the area near the finish line. “We’re in the process of repairing this area now. We’ve gone down to the base and we’re going to try and address the drainage problem as best we can. Again, the only time we had a problem with the main track this past meet was when we received significant rainfall and during those periods of rain, we were closed.

We’re hoping this procedure will enhance the track’s ability to drain.”

Haines also noted that Santa Anita, which opened in 1934, is a facility in continual need of regular maintenance.

“This is the first time in two years that we’ve had an opportunity to get into the stable area and address some of our maintenance issues in a comprehensive way.

We’re going to be doing work on some of the stalls and tack rooms, and we’re going to re-grade all of the roads back there, including those that run between shed

rows. We’ve been here for 76 years now and with regular maintenance, this plant will continue to be the most beautiful racing facility in America.”

Santa Anita will reopen for training at the conclusion of the Del Mar race meeting on Sept. 8. Following the Oak Tree meet, which ends on Oct. 31, Santa Anita will be open for training in advance of its traditional winter/spring meeting, which begins Dec. 26.

Santa Anita Park began making necessary repairs on its synthetic racetrack in

Staying with the topic of illegal immigration Judicial Watch has launched a nationwide campaign to enforce our nation’s immigration laws. So while they push forward with critical litigation in Arizona, they also keeping our eye on other illegal immigration hotspots around the country, like Pasadena according to their website.

Judicial Watch filed an open records lawsuit against the Pasadena Police Department (PPD) and acting PPD Police Chief Christopher Vicino to obtain documents related to the department’s alleged illegal alien sanctuary policy.

The watchdog group has requested the documents under the California Public Records Act: “Any and all records of PPD’s policies, procedures, or directives concerning, regarding, or re-

changes are still necessary and there’s always room for improvement according to Leon San Blas who faces obstacles every day of his life in a wheelchair.

The anniversary is a poignant reminder not only that government can work but also that, once upon a time, many Republicans were willing to welcome it.

Lobbyists for the business community, including the Chamber of Commerce had predicted that the requirements would cripple employers. However, a large bipartisan majority passed the bill, a Republican president, George H.W. Bush, signed and implemented it.

The critics were not entirely wrong. Some businesses suffered and lawyers profited. But what might happen if the ADA were up for a vote today?

Final Plea for Host Families for Foreign Teens

Foreign high school students are scheduled to arrive soon for academic semester and year homestay programs, and the sponsoring organization needs a few more local host families. The students are anxiously awaiting news of their new families.

This is the last chance for these young ambassadors to fulfill their life-long dreams, and their placement deadlines are rapidly approaching.

According to Pacific Intercultural Exchange (P.I.E.) President, John Doty, the students are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years, are English-speaking, have their own spending money, carry accident and health insurance, and are anxious to share their cultural experiences with their new American families. P.I.E. currently has programs to match almost every family's needs, ranging in length from one semester to a full academic year, where the students attend local public and private high schools.

Families who host for P.I.E. are also eligible to claim a monthly charitable contribution deduction on their itemized tax returns for each month they host a sponsored student.

Doty encourages families to contact the program immediately, as it will allow the proper time for the students and hosts to get to know one another before they actually meet for the first time.

Of all the fascinating places I’ve visited on my travels, Cuevas del Drach or Caves of the Dragon stands, with the very best as far as beauty and uniqueness.

Located on the east coast of the Spanish island of Mallorca, the caves are a geologic masterpiece, hidden 50 feet below the surface of the earth and stretching for more than a mile. They are highlighted by dramatic hanging limestone formations of stalagmites and stalactites, and one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world, Lago Martel (Lake Martel).

To get to the caverns visitors descend 120 steps down misty, twisting tunnels. The journey is worth it though because waiting at the bottom is a pristine and mysterious world reminiscent of a land from a “Lord of the Rings” or “Harry Potter” movie.

At the bottom of the stairs is a giant cathedral-like hall, glowing in amber light, with cool breezes and the sounds of dripping water.

This is where guests are put in groups and led through

the caverns by tour guides who explain everything in three languages: Spanish, English and German.

When the tour ends, everyone is seated in a 500-seat concert area, right in front of the lake. For me it was a surreal moment, to be sitting underground in a bandstand, beside a giant lake. Once everybody is settled into their seats, the mood was enhanced when three tiny, candle-lit canoes full of violinwielding minstrels floated by playing the beautiful strains of Chopin, Mozart, Caballero and more. The music is available on CD. The live concert lasts 10 minutes and is followed by a light show of recreating the sun the sunrise over the lake.

After the show, I took a ride in one of the canoes. While drifting across the glassy water I thought about the island and its other treasures.

Mallorca is the largest of the three Spanish Balearic Islands. The other islands are Menorca and Ibiza. All three lie in the Mediterranean Sea off the south east coast of mainland Spain.

My trip began in Palma de Mallorca, the island capital and main port. While here I admired ancient gothic architecture, a harbor full of luxury yachts, and large hotels on the famous drag, Paseo Marítimo.

Outside of town, I drove through rustic countryside, where thousands of idyllic windmills, broken stone

structures, and almond trees speckle the landscape. Before reaching the caves I stopped in Manacor and explored a Mallorcan pearl factory.

Instead of diving for the real thing, which can take years to cultivate, islanders make the gems by hand, using wire and a fish-scalebased coating. The end product is a “pearl” with a luster any oyster would be proud of.

Service Changes To Pasadena Arts Buses Begin Aug. 1 Effective August 1, Pasadena Area Rapid Transit System (ARTS) will implement several changes to bus services, including the elimination of Sunday service on all six routes.

People who ride Pasadena ARTS buses on Sundays are encouraged to try Metro and Foothill Transit buses.

riendship Day is August 2, 2010. It is a time to recognize your friends and your friendships. It can be a special time for your friends as you let them know that they are truly appreciated. What would our lives be without friends? The more friends you make the more joyous your life can be. Friendship day is celebrated as a day to dedicate to your friends, to show how much you care and love them. A “Specialty” of this day is that people forgets their troubles and sorrows and celebrate the day by making each other happy and most of all making each other feel worthy.

It is common knowledge that close friendships feel good, but did you know just how much of a health factor they could be? According to a 10-year study of older people they have found that satisfying friendships promote longevity better than even close family ties. They can help protect against obesity, depression, heart disease, and many other health problems.

Friendships are very important. We can do things with our friends that make us laugh and feel special and accepted. Having a good friend whom you can share your feelings and your problems with, will make your world happier.

Loyal friendships are not restricted to people!

Several years ago my wife received a dog as a birthday gift from our son. He had read that pets promote healthy and happy lives for retired people and therefore he thought that it would be

great therapy for my wife who is a recovering cancer patient. Immediately the German shepherd “Prince” became her dog. He followed my wife everywhere throughout the house and yard. Though Prince was a very sweet natured dog and great around children he would stand in front of Pat and give a quiet growl at strangers if they came near her without her approval.

But her beautiful German shepherd companion was very mischievous. Anytime the dog saw something personal of Pat’s lying around he would take it and hide it.

Soon Pat was missing socks, shoes, tennis balls, books and a host of other miscellaneous items. Their friendship was touching. Prince would come into the bedroom around 6 A.M. each morning to check and see if his master was OK, and then wag his tale against the bed until she acknowledged him.

One day Pat had to check into the hospital, as her cancer had become a serious problem. The dog went into complete seclusion waiting at the door for the next two weeks for my wife’s return. He would hardly eat and would not respond to a call from me.

When Pat returned home from the hospital she was very weak and could not respond to the dogs unbelievable happiness. But Prince would not leave her side. Pat was hardly able to reach down from the bed to pet her faithful dog. Soon Pat in her weekend condi-

I’d like to give you a brief background on my associations with newspapers and why I’m so passionate about the printed page.

As many of you know, I’m a British subject. My family immigrated to the United States in the mid-1960s. We boarded the RMS Queen Mary at Southampton in May of 1965. From there we sailed to Cherbourg and ultimately docked in New York 5 days later. My father had just been promoted to Foreign Correspondent from the London desk of a major British daily newspaper, The Daily Telegraph to the New York bureau - hence the reason we were sailing off to this brave new and exciting world.

This was, without question, the single most incredible journey of my life.

In the middle of the 19th century, people began referring to the press as a fourth estate, referencing the fact that most parliaments and other houses of government had an area set aside specifically for the use of the press, and pointing out that the press was a distinct group within the larger framework of the realm. Edmund Burke is said to have referenced the fourth estate when discussing the French Revolution, and Thomas Carlyle, a 19th century writer helped the term become a common term.

s I sauntered into the restaurant and gazed to my right, there against the wall, sat two tall black cowboy hats, with ornate gaucho (cowboy) shirts and pointed toe boots.

I did not want to stare them down before I had my supper. Besides, they wore their black hats with a slight tilt upward and I took that as a proclamation of peace. I knew I was lucky, for they were not wearing their holsters and their horses were nowhere in sight. I was certain that this Gene Autry fan should have been wearing his white hat. I had not found myself in a Hollywood set or Texas saloon, I was in a churrascaria in Burbank, a Brazilian Steak House. The Brazilians must love the idea of bountiful dining, because the Brazilian restaurants that I come across are almost always, all you can eat.

For this grub rustle, I traveled to Picanha in Burbank.

The night started well as I was easily able to locate street parking, but if you go on a weekend night, I suggest going to one of many city-parking structures around town. The restaurant was about half full, which is good for a Sunday night. Picanha’s room is divided in two by an oval-shaped salad bar with the cook in the middle of the station watching the tender meats slowly turning upon the fire.

If they are busy and rushed and did not get a chance to ask you if this is your first time, you may find them come out and slice some piece of gorgeous meat at the table next to you and come out again and give them another selection of meat with your plate sits barren of meat. He then makes a cut along this deliciously looking piece of meat with a sharp knife until it is ready to tumble off the meat, but you come to its rescue with your tongs and snatch the freshly cut meat from the air.

Some of the selections that are offered in their parade of meats are: Pork Loin, Skirt Steak, a very tasty chicken drumstick, leg of lamb, and my favorite the petit filet mignon. I was full within twenty minutes, but you can also go back to the salad bar and get more side items, including dessert, and of course the meats will continue to come to your table as long as the green side of the block is up. Of all the meats that are offered, the garlic chicken offered the most abundance of flavors. The food checks in at ($27.50) for all you can eat. I think that this is great deal. They aren’t going to let you eat all you can eat at The Arroyo Chop House for that kind of price. Of course it is not the same cut of beef,

The Telarc recording star is a premier singer with a deep sense of swing.

Korb will be accompanied at the piano by Pamela York.

Saturday’s Art Walk to be an Interactive Experience Monrovia’s Myrtle Avenue will be the scene for art this Saturday, July 31, from 7 to 10 p.m. The Monrovia Association of Fine Arts sponsors these events on the last Saturday of every summer month.

This week Monrovia High School ceramics students will be demonstrating the firing of Raku pottery in

the 400 block of Myrtle Avenue. The block will also play host live music from the Dollmakers while Paint and Play will have post cards for children to decorate for the troops in Afghanistan.

In addition, the first 50 youngsters (12 and under) who appear at Paint-N-Play will be able to paint a ceramic piece at the studio for

Nancy Walsh, like many in the community, wanted some clarification on how the letters were counted and what the actual humbers were.

Now, according to Shollenberger there were 274 invalid protests or duplicates, she said.

A recent heated public hearing was held in which the majority of speakers protested the proposed hike criticized the amount of the increases; with some saying the hikes would particularly hurt those on fixed incomes.

Under the rate hike structure, the maximum rate increase would be about 37.5 percent over five years; others would see increases of just over 36 percent to 33 percent depending on the amount of water used and size of meter.

The city will now attempt a public relations water awareness program for residents to help customers understand why the increases are important with a seriously aging infrastructure.

The City Council received a report regarding the numbers from Shollenberger at Tuesday’s regular meeting. The report seemed to confuse many residents and pose more questions than give any answers or clarity to the process.

Whether or not any rate hike is implemented remains to be seen. It seems that there are still more questions than answers and the numbers seemed to confuse even the mayor.

One School, Two Campuses: Immaculate Conception and Annunciation

By Susan Motander Immaculate Conception and Annunciation Catholic Churches both have had parochial schools for many years. Recently both schools were facing increasing financial difficulties. Neither school wanted to close. The solution was to combine the best of each in a unified school with two campuses.

According to Monrovia’s City Manager Scott Ochoa who has been a member of the consolida-

For several years both schools have faced declining enrollment and increased operating costs. While having one school absorb the other was briefly considered that plan was rejected according the a press release on the subject. The continued presence of a school at both was felt to be important to the churches.

The task force which is implementing the merging is still working to resolve all the issues from the difficult task of selecting a principal to the seemingly mundane (but vital to the respective schools) of the choice of uniforms, decisions have been made regarding the faculty.

According to a statement released by both churches, “the respective pastors and a pair of campus administrators will make executive decisions regarding day-to-day decisions at the school.”

He was on the PD’s historical committee - developing lobby displays depicting the history of the Arcadia Police Department. He developed the Department’s first web site.

Mike liked to say that one should “do the right thing for the right reason” He was a supportive

and nurturing father and best friend to his wife Marilyn - enjoying short road trips, quiet times on the patio, reading books or going out for an ice cream.

Devoted to his family, this February the entire family vacationed together on the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. He and his wife Marilyn, son Tim and daughter-in-law Tiffany were members of the Arcadia School District’s bowling league and got a kick out of being the Daleo “Bowleos”Mike is survived by his loving family: wife Marilyn, their son Tim and daughter-in-law Tiffany, daughter Jennifer and husband TJ Forman, step-grandchildren Lindy and Colton, and grandson Nolan Michael.

Funeral services will be held at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA 90601 (Enter Gate 1). Friends of Foster Children Celebrates Christmas in July

By Candyce Columbus Friends of Foster Children (FOFC) Sugar Plum (SP) has a remarkable track record. Since the program began 34 years ago they have collected over 160,000 holiday gifts for children in the San Gabriel Valley foster care system and the facilities that support them.

The all-volunteer organization has 80 active members 29 of whom met on Saturday, July 24 in the Altadena home of Charleen Albee to kick off Sugar Plum 2010 by preparing the gift wish tags that will adorn the Christmas trees this year beginning the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 26.

The trees will be located in the Nordstrom’s wing of Westfield Santa Anita mall and volunteers will sit at the trees during the hours the mall is open November 26 through December 15.

Generous shoppers choose tags off the trees, purchase one or more of the gifts listed and return them unwrapped before December 15.

“We’re hoping to fulfill 5,300 gift wishes this year,” explains SP Chair Gigi Andrew. She adds, “The facilities we will help this year include Bienvenidos Childrens Center, Ettie Lee Youth and Family Services, LeRoy Haynes Center, Hillsides, Rosemary Children’s Services, Trinity Children & Family Services, Youth Moving

On, Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services, Pasadena Alumni Support Center, Hope House for the Handicapped and Helen Evans Home.”

FOFC President Susan Wittmer says, “A project the size of Sugar Plum, which provides Christmas gifts to foster children and emancipated teens, takes months of planning and preparation. It starts in June when the Sugar Plum Chair assembles her team and begins the initial planning. It continues through the summer and fall as wishes are collected and tags are prepared. And it doesn’t conclude till January when the last thank you is written and the wrap up meeting is held.

The next step will be writing the children’s and facility wishes on the tags after they are received.

“SP Chair Gigi Andrew has gotten our 35th Sugar Plum project off to a great start,” continues Wittmer. “Our FOFC members are doing their part, working towards the day when the trees open and our friends in the community join in the effort to bring holiday happiness to local foster children.”

Those friends include organizations such as National Charity League, Los Angeles Dept. of Water and Power Employees, Wells Fargo, Arcadia Real Estate Professionals, Sara Lee and Theta Chi Epsilon

“A couple of years ago a friend introduced me to FOFC at their annual fund raising luncheon,” comments La Cañada resident Carole Kolla, a relatively new member. “I was very impressed with the members and their eagerness and excitement to assist kids who needed encouragement and a helping hand - by their good works and volunteering the kids knew that someone cared.

The annual Sugar Plum Tree event was the deciding factor.”

Members of FOFC hail from cities throughout the San Gabriel Valley including El Monte, Altadena, Arcadia, Temple City, Duarte, Monrovia, San Gabriel, South Pasadena, La Cañada and even Los Angeles. New members are always welcome and Andrew says she would be happy to have their help with Sugar Plum.

The next general membership meeting will be held on Saturday, October 9 at the centrallylocated Arcadia Community Center (365 Campus Drive). Anyone interested in becoming a part of this vital organization is welcome to attend.

Solar-Powered Trash Compactors Added In Pasadena With 40 new Big Belly solar-powered trash compactors installed in Pasadena’s most traveled pedestrian areas, everyone can dispose of their incidental waste conveniently while helping the city save energy.

By crushing discarded materials into a solid mass, each receptacle is able to hold about 200 gallons of

trash – five times as much waste as a standard public trash receptacle.

While a standard receptacle requires daily pickup, Big Belly compactors need only weekly pickup, resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

The portable compactors, now 50 in total, are cordless, self-charging,

solar-powered and energyefficient.

The high-tech trash compactors were installed in public rights of way by the Street Maintenance and Integrated Waste Management Division of the Pasadena Public Works Department and mark another effort to bring sustainable practices to the city.

Zewail pioneered femtochemistry, the study of ultrafast chemical processes on the femtosecond timescale using special lasers. A femtosecond is one quadrillionth of a second, or one millionth of one billionth of a second. Some have described his pioneering laser technique as the world’s fastest camera. It can capture frames of the ultrafast motion of atoms and molecules as they undergo the reactions that produce gasoline, plastics, medicines and the processes that make life possible. Just as “slow motion” replays in football and other sports capture the details of fast-paced motion, Zewail’s “ultrafast camera” captures the complex details of reactions as they occur.

For hundreds of years, scientists believed it was impossible to view the ultrafast motion of chemical reactions. But Zewail thought otherwise. In the late 1980s,

he performed a series of experiments that provided the first detailed glimpses of chemical reactions in motion. He did this using a high-speed “camera,” based on laser technology, with flashes of light that each lasted only some millionth of a billionth of a second. This allowed him to “freeze” the motion of molecules as they reacted with each other, much like rapid flashes of light freeze the motion of a spinning fan blade. For the first time, scientists could actually see chemical reactions as they unfolded.

Since the Nobel Prize, he and his group have developed a new field dubbed four-dimensional (4D) electron microscopy. The methodology enables visualization of materials and biological cells with unprecedented resolutions in both space and time. In recent Science and Nature papers, Zewail and colleagues reported the achievement of 4D tomography and nearfield imaging and demonstrated the methodology for visualization of “nanoma-

chines” at work and evanescent bacterium cells. The development is termed by scientists in the field as revolutionary for materials and biological sciences.

Zewail was born in 1946 in Egypt. He studied at the University of Alexandria and earned a Ph.D. in 1974 from the University of Pennsylvania. After two years at the University of California at Berkeley, he was employed at Caltech, where he currently is a chair professor and director of the Physical Biology Center.

He also serves as a dedicated spokesman for science education. He is a member of President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science & Technology. Zewail travels the world lecturing on what he describes as “the beauty and critical role of science in our lives.”

The Priestley Medal is an annual award named for Joseph Preistley, who reported the discovery of oxygen in 1774. Since 1923, the ACS has recognized groundbreaking chemists with the award.

A Titanic Day for Science at La Salle During the Cardboard Regatta

On May 25, 2010, La Salle High School’s Cardboard Boat Regatta II set off to sea once again. Under the guidance of physics teachers Chija Bauer, Kjersti Housman, Brian Miller ’79 and geometry teacher Susie Harrison, junior physics students, in teams of three, were paired with a freshman or sophomore Honors Geometry student to create an unsinkable boat. These teams were giv-

en an assignment to utilize the principles of geometry and physics that pertain to Archimedes Principle and the Laws of Buoyancy.

The task was to design and produce a cardboard boat using only packing tape (no duct tape) that was capable of traversing the Sierra Madre Pool, back and forth, approximately 40 meters each way, with two people onboard.

As always the laws of

physics apply as the day saw numerous successful voyages with an occasional capsizing and some slow Titanic-like sinkings.

Teams were encouraged to create themes for their boats and dress accordingly. Parents, students and teachers all had a wonderful day of sun and fun while gaining more knowledge of the physics that rule our world.

David Dreier to Host “Road to Employment” Job Fair Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) will host a “Road to Employment” Job Fair next Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in Monrovia, California.

POLICE BLOTTERS Arcadia PD For the period of Sunday, July 18, through Saturday, July 24, the Police Department responded to 978 calls for service of which 128 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, July 18: Shortly after 11:30 p.m., units responded to the 400 block of California in reference to a suicidal subject.

Officers determined that the 51-year-old male Caucasian was a danger to himself and was transported to a hospital for a 72-hour evaluation.

Between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 00 block of East Floral. A neighbor saw a damaged open door to the house and notified police. Unknown suspect(s) had apparently kicked open the door and stole a television set, a replica sword, a hunting knife, and miscellaneous jewelry.

Monday, July 19: Units responded to the County Park swimming pool around 11:22 a.m. regarding a hazardous materials exposure incident. The malfunction of a filtration system led to the discharge of a large amount of chlorine into the pool during a swim lesson. Thirty-two victims were evacuated and 17 were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

A 49-year-old male Caucasian was arrested from Burlington Coat Factory around 7:19 p.m. for attempting to use a credit card that was not in his name, and he had personal identifying information belonging to the credit cardholder.

The arrestee also provided officers with a false name and had a $50,000 outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

Tuesday, July 20: Between 12:30 p.m. on July 19 and 11:30 a.m. on July 20, a residential burglary occurred in the 400 block of West Palm.

While the house was tented for fumigation, unknown suspect(s) entered the home through a rear window and stole unknown property.

A residential burglary

was reported in the 300 block of Fairview. An elderly resident was approached around 2:00 p.m. by a male suspect claiming to be from the Department of Water and Power. The suspect, wearing a Water and Power identification tag, advised that there was an accident at a construction site and needed to check and see if the water at the location was contaminated. While the victim was distracted by the suspect, another suspect entered the home and removed a large amount of jewelry.

Wednesday, July 21: A robbery occurred in the 100 block of Huntington around 2:30 a.m. Two male African-American suspects, in their 20’s, displayed a knife at the victim. Fearing for his safety, the victim tossed his wallet at the suspects and they fled the scene on foot.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m., units responded to the racetrack regarding a battery investigation. During an altercation, a 55-year-old male Caucasian choked and punched his girlfriend.

The suspect was arrested for inflicting corporal injury to cohabitant.

Thursday, July 22: Around 2:20 a.m., officers followed a reckless driver to a 7-Eleven located at 1003 South Baldwin. An intoxicated 35-year-old male Asian driver was arrested for DUI. Loss prevention personnel from JC Penney advised that they had detained a woman for theft around 2:20 p.m. The suspect removed sensor tags in a fitting room and then concealed the merchandise in shopping bags. Additional stolen property from Macy’s and Claire’s were also recovered. A private person’s arrest was made, and a 27-year-old Hispanic was taken into custody for commercial burglary.

Friday, July 23: An auto burglary occurred at 24-Hour Fitness, 125 North First, between 1:15 p.m. and 2:27 p.m. Unknown suspect(s) smashed a car window and stole a $450 GPS unit.

Between 4:30 p.m. and 10:12 p.m., a 1991 gold Honda Accord was stolen

from the Westfield Mall parking lot.

Saturday, July 24: Units responded to the 400 block of West Duarte around 12:47 a.m. to investigate a solo traffic collision.

An intoxicated 17-year-old male Asian driver collided into a parked car and suffered minor injuries. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Shortly before 10:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to Nordstrom in reference to a woman detained for theft. Investigation revealed that the suspect stole a necklace and a belt and left them inside her 2010 Mercedes. She then re-entered Nordstrom and stole a bathing suit. A private person’s arrest was made, and the 35-year-old Asian was taken into custody for commercial burglary.

The stolen items were recovered from her car.

Monrovia PD During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 621 service events, resulting in 123 investigations. Following are the last week's highlighted issues and events:

Mental Evaluation On July 15 at 11:03 p.m., police received a call from a female subject reporting a possible suicide attempt. Her boyfriend stated he was going to a local park to jump off a cliff because he was feeling depressed.

Officers arrived in the 500 block of East Olive and detained the male subject, who became combative.

The subject was transported to a hospital and held for a 72-hour mental evaluation.

Driving Under the Influence / Suspect Arrested On July 16, at 4:35 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle traveling over the speed limit on Foothill. He stopped the vehicle on Canyon and determined the driver was under the influence. A small amount of marijuana was discovered in the vehicle. The driver was arrested and taken into custody.

Suspicious Subjects / Out-of-State Warrant Suspect Arrested On July 16 at 4:37 a.m.,

a police agent noticed two subjects riding bicycles in the 100 block of North Canyon in the early hours. The subjects were stopped and determined to be on parole.

One of the subjects had an out-of-state warrant and was arrested. The second subject was interviewed and released.

Vandalism - Suspect Arrested On July 16 at 5:30 a.m., police received a call reporting three male juveniles in the 1600 block of South Mayflower smashing mailboxes. Officers responded and determined six mailboxes had been vandalized.

The officers conducted an area check for the suspects, but were unable to locate the juveniles. Investigation continuing.

Petty Theft / Gang Injunction Service - Suspect Arrested On July 16 at 7:36 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of West Huntington regarding a shoplifting suspect who fled in a vehicle west on Huntington. Officers observed the vehicle and stopped the driver. The reporting party positively identified the suspect. Further investigation revealed the suspect is a gang member and needed service per the Gang Injunction. The suspect was served at the police station after being arrested.

Driving Under the Influence - Suspect Arrested On July 17 at 12:10 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle traveling south on Alta Vista that failed to stop for the stop sign at Foothill.

The driver was stopped and determined to be under the

influence. The driver was arrested.

Driving Under the Influence - Suspect Arrested On July 17 at 3:23 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle in the intersection of Fifth and Foothill blocking traffic. Upon further investigation, it was determined the driver was under the influence. The driver was arrested.

Driving Under the Influence - Suspect Arrested On July 17 at 3:36 a.m., an officer was traveling south on Myrtle at Foothill and noticed a vehicle traveling north which almost collided into his patrol vehicle.

The driver was stopped and determined to be under the influence. The driver was arrested.

Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested On July 18 at 8:18 a.m., a female subject in custody for public intoxication was released in the morning before 8 a.m. She walked home to her residence in the 100 block of North Heliotrope and got into an argument with her husband.

She struck him on the left side of his head with her fist and kicked him in the groin.

The husband sustained a minor visible injury. The female was not home when a detective arrived; however, a short time later, she returned. The female was arrested and a temporary restraining order was obtained for the husband.

Grand Theft Auto On July 18 at 11:19 a.m., an officer went to a residence in the 500 block of West Duarte Road re-

garding a stolen vehicle.

The victim stated the vehicle was stolen sometime in the morning. It is a blue, 1987 Honda Accord. Investigation continuing.

Death Report On July 18 at 12:04 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of South Mayflower on the report of a death. A 58-yearold male subject, who had been released from prison a week prior, was staying in a motor home at his family's residence until he could find a place to live.

He was found deceased in the motor home by family members. It appears to be of natural causes.

Vandalism On July 18 at 4:02 p.m., an officer went to Sherman and East Los Angeles regarding a report of four adult male subjects in a tan Cherokee with license plate number 3TLZ619 tagging in the area. A passenger, an adult male subject wearing a blue t-shirt and tan shorts, was the tagger. The vehicle was gone when officers arrived. An area search was conducted, but the subjects were not located. The tagging is gang related. Investigation continuing.

Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested On July 18 at 7:51 p.m., an officer contacted a female victim in the Police Department lobby regarding a domestic violence report. The victim had bruising and an abrasion on her forearms. The suspect was arrested at his home.

POLICE BLOTTERS an officer stopped a driver for making an illegal u-turn and failing to stop for a red signal. A field evaluation revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The driver was arrested.

Vehicle Burglary On July 19 at 6:57 a.m., an officer went to a hotel in the 900 block of West Huntington regarding the report of a vehicle burglary. A guest's vehicle had been broken into and a GPS, briefcase, and keys to an RV were taken from the vehicle. Investigation continuing.

Vandalism On July 19 at 7:50 a.m., an officer was heading eastbound on Central from California and saw gang graffiti on a retainer wall on the south side of the street. The writing was spray painted in large letters over approximately 85 feet. Investigation continuing.

Residential Burglary On July 19 at 9:22 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of Valley View, which is being renovated. The contractor arrived and noted the front door knob was smashed and pulled away from the door. He entered the residence and realized some of his tools were missing.

Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft Auto On July 19 at 11:19 a.m., an officer went to a business in the 1800 block of South Peck regarding a stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle is a 1993, navy blue Saturn. The crime appears to have been captured on surveillance video. It shows a male subject about 30 years old, approximately six feet tall, stocky build, wearing a light colored baseball hat and dark shorts. A possible vehicle seen is a 1998 Dodge Van with tinted windows. Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft On July 20 at 6:48 a.m., an officer went to a residence in the 800 block of West Duarte Road regarding a grand theft. When he arrived, the victim reported someone had keyed his truck on both doors and stolen pool cleaning equipment and supplies from his truck. The truck was parked

in its assigned space in an open carport. Investigation continuing.

Burglary On July 20 at 2:31 p.m., loss prevention from a business in the 500 block of West Huntington reported a male and female shoplifters heading toward the exit door. An officer arrived and found loss prevention had detained the suspects. The male was very cooperative.

He stated the female subject had stolen some perfume and later returned to the store to exchange it for cash. The female denied any wrongdoing and kept changing her statements.

Both subjects were arrested for burglary.

Vehicle Burglary On July 20 at 8:42 p.m., police responded to a smash-and-grab vehicle burglary which occurred in a lot in the 100 block of South Myrtle. A GPS and a cell phone that were left in the vehicle were stolen.

Driving Under the Influence / Hit and Run Traffic Collision - Suspect Arrested On July 20 at 10:09 p.m., a vehicle traveling north on Mountain failed to stop for the red light at Royal Oaks and collided into another vehicle. The uninjured victim pulled over, but the suspect vehicle drove away. Witnesses followed the suspect and called police. The suspect drove to Mountain and Valley View, paused momentarily, then drove south on Mountain and was subsequently stopped at Olive.

He was found to be driving under the influence and was arrested.

Residential Burglary On July 20 at 10:20 p.m., police responded to a residence in the 200 block of South Fifth. A female subject who lives at the residence reported her residence had been burglarized sometime during the day.

The suspect broke the glass on a rear door to gain entry.

A television was stolen. Investigation continuing.

Theft - Suspects Arrested On July 21 at 2:29 a.m., a witness reported seeing a male subject stealing items from a church in the 600 block of West Foothill. The church had numerous items

that were for sale secured within a fenced area. The 15-year-old suspect jumped the fence to steal the items.

Officers arrived and detained the suspect, who admitted to stealing the items.

He was arrested without incident.

Monrovia FD

Personnel responded to 85 emergency calls from 0800 hours July 20 to 0800 hours July 27. Significant incidents include:

Haz-Mat Response On Monday afternoon, Firefighters responded to Arcadia County Park on a report of several people feeling ill in the pool. Firefighters determined that the pool had been over chlorinated, causing eye irritation and difficulty breathing.

A total of seventeen adults and children were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and several other patients were treated at the scene and released.

A faulty sensor that regulates the amount of chlorine released into the pool was determined to be the cause of the incident.

Odor of Natural Gas On Tuesday afternoon, firefighters responded to the 1400 block of south Shamrock on a report of a strong odor of natural gas in the area. Firefighters received additional calls of the same odor just south of the initial reported location. After several minutes the odor began to dissipate and the exact location source was not located. The source of the odor was most likely from a leak outside of the city that

had drifted over by the afternoon winds.

Sierra Madre PD During the week of Sunday, July 18th, to Saturday July 24th, the Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 332 calls for service.

Monday, July 19th: 6:25 AM – Commercial Burglary, Vandalism, Cruelty to Animals, Sierra Madre Middle School, 160 North Canon Ave. Suspects smashed a window, then gained entry to the classroom. The suspects vandalized the room, causing extensive damage.

The suspects also killed fish in a tank. The loss included a small rocket, and a telescope, which was recovered. The investigating officers followed leads and identified and arrested five suspects, all minors.

Four of the minors are Sierra Madre residents; one is from Altadena. The crime occurred between 2:30 pm, Friday, 7/16/2010 and 6:05 am, Saturday 7/19/2010.

The teacher estimated his loss was at $280.00. No estimated loss from the school was available.

6:50 PM – Auto Burglary, 31 West Sierra Madre Blvd. Unknown suspect(s) smashed the driver’s door window and stole a purse from the floorboard. The crime occurred Monday, 7/19/2010 between 6:30 pm and 6:45 pm. The loss included cash, a driver’s license, personal checks, and a charge card. The total loss was estimated at $1,050.00.
