Sierra Madre City to hold informational water meeting

ierra Madre residents will get the chance to ask questions and share their opinions about the city’s water operations and potential rate increase rates at a special City Council Meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

While there will be additional opportunities to comment, “the Oct. 19 meeting is being held at an important juncture in the City Council’s deliberation process” according to a city mailer.

City officials launched an “education and public outreach program” this summer after it opted to table a proposed water rate hike that would have raised rates between about 33 percent and 37.5 percent over five years.

A total of 1,719 valid protests were received against the proposed rate hike, which is 129 short of the 1,848 needed for a majority to defeat the proposal. However, council members said the number of protests received was a reason re-examine the proposal and increase dialogue with water customers.The Oct. 19 City Council meeting will be held at 232 W. Sierra Madre Boulevard.

oday’s information explosion is making computer-aholics out of many computer users. People are spending increasing amounts of time interacting with information technology.

More and more people are being drawn to the internet sending and receiving e-mail, visiting social networking sites, viewing current news or just surfing the Web to satisfy their curiosity. Sociologists are concerned that the potential for addiction is increasing as the time set aside for socializing personally with family members and other interests is rapidly decreasing.

One day not long ago my computer crashed and would not turn on! My first anxious reaction was the thought of the one hundred dollar an hour home computer service call. Then there was the traumatic effect on my daily routine, as I had to wait until the next day for the computer technician to arrive. The one-day interval waiting for the service person to arrive was my longest day in

history. I could not read my electronic newspaper, check stock market activity, conduct banking needs nor was I able to send and receive daily e-mails. Important personal information was no longer in my memory, instead it was now locked up somewhere in the computer universe.

As the trauma of the day endlessly drug on, I kept wondering what to do to pass the time.

The next day, the arrival of the computer technician brought even more anxiety. His revelation after the one hundred dollar an hour computer evaluation, was that my computer must go to the computer hospital for further analysis. The financial anxiety and the absence of my computer for possibly a week had now become even more traumatic. It was evident that the computer had taken over my life. It was like having a second wife, as I had become so dependant upon my electronic information assistant.

Now, well into the third day of waiting, I received a most pleasing repair report. The computer

tech’s inspection revealed that the problem was the computer memory chip.

His search of their sales records revealed that six years prior, when I purchased my Apple computer that I had updated the memory chip and that it was covered with a lifetime user warranty, therefore the repair service was free.

I learned a great lesson from this experience. Personal communication with family, and friends and the need to set aside quiet time to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful world around us must be given top priority for our free time. The computer and the Internet are great assets to enjoy ... but they should not dictate our lives.

It was so encouraging to find that there are still very honest repair people that demonstrate that old fashion caring integrity.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor: During nearly three years out-of-network with Anthem Blue Cross, Methodist Hospital has worked diligently to reestablish a contract. With the efforts of local Anthem CEO Leslie Margolin to bring Wellpoint’s contract negotiators to the table, Methodist and Anthem Blue Cross nearly finalized rates for a new agreement earlier this year. Wellpoint/Anthem then threw up a new roadblock. Anthem has refused to pay tens of millions of dollars in patient benefits for care we provided since we’ve been out-of-network. Anthem then conditioned a new contract based on Methodist Hospital dropping this dispute over patient benefits. According to the LA Times, Wellpoint “told Margolin that her services were no longer needed” in July after rejecting her reform efforts.

Methodist Hospital has since been unable to resolve the claim dispute, and Anthem continues to keep us out of its network.

work with Anthem, Anthem has improperly paid unreasonably low patient benefits in its attempt to shift the costs of the care to patients. We believe that Anthem’s method for calculating the patient benefits and not covering some hospital charges is illegal. Rather than attempting to collect hospital charges from the patients, Methodist Hospital has filed a lawsuit seeking to recover such payments from Anthem.

Our efforts with Anthem began in 2006 and 2007 when we tried to negotiate a new contract.

We made our best effort, extending the old contract a full year beyond its renewal date with no rate increase. Anthem responded with threats to lock us out of its network for a minimum of two years. The Department of Managed Health Care finally ordered Anthem to “stop unfair negotiating practices” and issued a separate ruling protecting patient access at Methodist Hospital. While Methodist Hospital went without a rate increase for two years, Anthem imposed

substantial premium increases on many customers during that same period. Negotiations never progressed, and the contract terminated in January 2008.

I want to remind you that Methodist Hospital is contracted with every other major insurance carrier except Anthem. Our employees have been satisfied with the HMO and self-funded PPO Blue Shield benefit plans that we switched to after our contract with Anthem ended in 2008. We have heard from other employers that they have switched their insurance coverage from Anthem or are offering additional health plan choices. Employers are also working with Methodist Hospital to settle claims, and some may contract directly with Methodist Hospital for in-network patient access to care. With or without Anthem’s support, we will continue to honor our commitment to provide quality care to this community.

Victory Jory was Jonas Wilkerson, in Gone with the Wind and played Lamont Cranston, aka ‘The Shadow’ in the 1942 serial film The Shadow.

Jory also portrayed Oberon in Max Reinhardt’s 1935 film adaptation of Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Tuskegee: Journey to Flight- Exhibit Comes to PCC on October 16 Pasadena City College will be hosting the “Tuskegee: Journey to Flight” exhibit beginning Oct. 16 in the African American Heritage Room on the second floor of the Shatford Library. The exhibit is an abridged version of the original presentation that was conceived and curated by the California African Open 7 days a week

American Museum.

“Tuskegee: Journey to Flight” tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, squadrons of African-American pilots and support staff who fought during World War II and were trained at Tuskegee Institute, a historically black college in Tuskegee, Ala. The exhibit will run through Jan.

A

s news of our roller coaster economy keeps us equally fascinated and confused, a new link to our waistlines and our wallets has been discovered. There are so many health benefits to keeping our weight under control but if we were told that it could actually save us money, would we be more motivated to do so?

A new study from George Washington University reports that being over-weight or obese can actually cost us extra money. In a study that compared people who were considered to be at their healthy weights to those who were considered clinically obese, researchers found that on average, being obese cost men $2,600 and women a staggering $4,800 more dollars per year compared to their thinner counterparts. Just being over-weight cost men $432 and women $524.

One of the largest costs is long term health care.

Obesity has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, some cancers and a myriad of other health threatening symptoms. Obese people tend to fall more, have hormone and bone density issues and tend to strain muscles more easily, therefore, requiring more medical attention.

In the work place, the study showed that obese people take more sick days and that thinner women earned more money than obese women. Interestingly, there was no such salary disparity between obese and thinner men. In general, obese people tend to require more ‘office support’ such as back supports, special chairs and foot rests and companies, afraid of law suits, often pander to these needs, hiking up business costs and straining an already fragile employment situation.

The study also showed that this test group spent more money on gasoline as not only did they walk

less, more load in the car uses more fuel. This could be expanded to extra wear and tear on a car and the costs that accumulate.

Travel, one aspect that was not addressed in the afore mentioned study, is also more expensive for the obese. Many airlines are requiring people to purchase an extra seat if they do not fit comfortably in one seat, doubling travel costs.

2nd Annual Pasadena Wine Festival Draws Thousands to Arboretum

H

ot weather, long lines for wine and food didn’t seem to deter thousands of people from enjoying the second annual Pasadena Wine Festival assisted by Pasadena Entertainment and Red White and Bluezz jazz club in Pasadena.

The annual extravaganza was a little different this year with the addition of the ever-growing popularity of the food trucks ( loving known as Roach Coaches) and in particular the Grilled Cheese Truck which has garned a great deal of attention in the Los Angels area in

recent months.

Some guests waited over two hours, however, for a sample of their wares and others simply left as the wait was far too long during the mid day heat.

However, the majority of the attendees seemsed to enjoy the Arboretum’s natural beauty and savor a fine wine at the same time.

Organizers said that this year’s event was the best yet and plan on even more music and other entertainment for next year’s soiree.

Sizzling Drama in Cigar Factory Offers Pulitzer Winner “Anna In The Tropics” at Sierra Madre Playhouse

I

t’s 1929, and we’re in a Cuban/American cigar factory in a small town outside Tampa, Florida. Passions are running high.

Eliades, Santiago and Cheche are cheering and betting wildly on a nearby cockfight.

With more ladylike passions, Marita, Conchita and Ofelia await with unbridled excitement the arrival of their new Lector. Their old Lector was beloved and good enough in his day. But he was old, and the romance in his reading had faded with time.

In cigar factories,

workers hired a Lector to help pass the hours as they rolled cigars by hand. As he read, new worlds opened to them.

It helped if his voice was melodic, especially when he chose romantic novels. And it was mandatory that he read not only with his voice, but also his heart.

Now Marita, Ofelia and Conchita can scarcely contain themselves, for this is the day Juan Julian is to come. Will he be handsome? Will his reading touch them?

Their menfolk are less enchanted, some even suggesting that a Lector is not needed, that he distracts the workers.

If “Anna in the Tropics” is about anything, it’s about passions. They run the gamut—jealousy, love, scorn, pride, rage, frustration…. It’s a strong plot, afire with emotions.

And the actors on the Sierra Madre Playhouse stage have been flawlessly chosen for each of their roles.

Juan Julio arrives when tall, handsome, appealing Eric Neil Gutierrez strides onstage. He has

chosen “Anna Karenina” as the book he’ll read.

Tolstoy’s tumultuous drama sparks unexpected new passions among the workers, and we’re privileged to watch the dramas unfold.

As Merela, Vanessa Marquez is ever the romantic, a gentle soul who seems to live in the dreamy world she creates for herself. Claudia Vazquez, by contrast, evokes an earthy, steamy Conchita, whether relating to her hapless husband Palomo (Serafin Falcon) or the Lector.

Minerva Garcia as Ofelia is the matriarch of the family, and also of the cigar factory, and lets her authority be known. All three women’s facial expressions convey every nuance of their feelings.

Santiago’s moods ranging from belligerent macho to tender are well-captured by Gerry Del Sol. Brash Eliades and smoldering Cheche are given definition by William Franco Vasquez and Arturo Medina, respectively. Vasquez and April Ibarra make double contributions, he as Peppino and she as not only Manola, but also the assistant director. In a couple of scenes, Santiago and Cheche hover in shadows just offstage, spying on the central action—don’t miss their dramatic glowerings!

With all these seething undertones, isn’t it surprising that “Anna” offers comedic touches that bring gales of laughter?

But it does, both as relief from tenser moments and for just plain fun.

Corky Dominguez brings his passion for “Anna in the Tropics,” Nilo Cruz’s 2003 Pulitzerprize winner, to his Playhouse directorial debut.

In the playbill foreword, Dominguez likens the entrance of the Lector “to that of a hurricane with its anticipation, force, and devastation.” An apt foreboding….

Plaudits to Ed Haynes for his set design.

The stark wooden walls, shutters, and beams are an authentic background for the cigar factory with its barrels, tables and chairs, and the Lector’s platform. The Playhouse programme features a description of the stage construction, which was

in the capable hands of Don Bergmann, assisted

by Ward Calaway and John Dimitri.

Authentic cigar paraphernalia is provided by Oscar Mursuli from his Temple City firm. Special mention should go to Megan Gurdine for the ‘20s costume designs.

Complementing the ladies’ retro clothing were their wonderful wigs, for which Christine Stiencamp can claim credit.

And it’s so definitive of the era to see the men wearing hats!

Producers Christine Helppie Soldate and Estelle Campbell wear two hats, with Soldate designing the program and Campbell the poster art, along with Rick Taylor. Eugene J. Hutchins is stage manager. Stephanette Isabel Smith designed the lighting, and Barry Schwam the sound. The background music unobtrusively lends atmospheric color.

Deborah Ross-Sullivan is dialect coach. Light tech is Nathan Lancaster, and sound tech is Steve Shaw. Claudia Vazquez handled social media contacts, Donald Songster production photography, and Philip Sokoloff publicity.

This being a drama rife with Latin passions, it should come as no surprise that we recommend “Anna” for mature audiences, with its explicit sexuality and more subtle, but still unmistakable, innuendos.

“Anna in the Tropics” will continue at the Sierra Madre Playhouse weekends through Nov. 13. Curtain time is 8 p.m.

Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. for Sunday matinees. Admission is $20 general, $17 for seniors (65+) and students (13-17), and $12 for children 12 and under.

If convicted,they face a maximum sentence of nine years and eightmonths in state prison.

Abraham and Louis Fernandez have $500,000 warrants for their arrest.

Nicholas is being held on $500,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. at the North Justice Center, Fullerton. The department is to be determined. Linda Fernandez, age 29 from Monrovia, is charged with four felony counts of accessory after the fact and faces a maximum sentence of three years and eight months in state

prison if convicted. She is being held on $500,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. at the North Justice Center, Fullerton. The department is to be determined.

Abraham Fernandez has these two sons with his former live-in girlfriend, from whom he is estranged. Approximately one year ago, Abraham Fernandez’s former girlfriend moved to Anaheim from Texas with the two boys. At approximately 7:45 p.m. on October7, 2010, the two victims were in an alley with their mother near their apartment. Abraham Fernandez and hisfather Louis Fernandez are accused of driving into the alley in a silver Dodge Caravan and quickly stoppingthe car. Louis Fernandez, who had been driving, is accused of getting out of the vehicle and grabbing one of the children who was standing next to his mother. Louis Fernandez is accused of putting the victim in the back of the van using the sliding side door.

Abraham Fernandez is accused of then getting out of the van and taking the other child from his screaming mother’s arms.

The defendants are accused of getting back into the vehicle and speeding in reverse out of the alley as they fled the scene.

Witnesses called 911 and the Anaheim Police Department responded to the scene. An AMBER Alert was immediately issued for the silver van.

After the kidnapping, the defendants are accused of driving to Monrovia to hide at a relative’s home. Nicholas and his wife Linda Fernandez, Abraham Fernandez’s cousin, are accused of harboring the defendants at their Monrovia home knowing that the children had been illegally abduct-

ed and were being sought by police. Nicholas is also accused of assisting in the child abduction by renting the van for Abraham and Louis Fernandez to use in the kidnapping.

Early on the morning of Oct. 8, 2010, Nicholas is accused of returning the rented van to Ontario InternationalAirport. Anaheim police officers contacted Nicholas that day after receiving information that the defendants and victims may be at his Monrovia home. Officers learned that the van had been returned and was no longer being used by the defendants.

Nicholas was arrested at his home on Oct. 10, 2010, for his role in the kidnapping. Linda Fernandez was arrested Oct. 11, 2010, at the home she shared with Nicholas for assisting the defendants after the abduction.

A $500,000 arrest warrant was issued today, Oct. 12, 2010, for Abraham and Louis Fernan-

The defendants may possibly be heading to Texas and the investigation is ongoing.

During his keynote address, Howser quipped that Akila Gibbs, Executive Director of the Pasadena Senior Center pigeonholed

Howser at El Portal, where Abel Ramirez was hosting a Tequila tasting a few months back.

Ramirez wanted Howser to meet Akila. It was here that Akila Gibbs asked Howser to host the Zest party for the Senior Center’s 50th Anniversay party.

Amazingly enough,

Howser agreed, and the rest is history.

Obituary Notices Caltech Professor Emeritus Thad Vreeland,85 Thad Vreeland Jr., emeritus professor of materials science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), passed away August 9 in San Gabriel, California. He was 85 years old.

In the 1960s and ‘70s, Fultz says, Vreeland performed challenging experiments to measure how fast dislocations move in metal crystals; in the ‘80s, he studied how defects in thin layers of semiconductor materials are generated by ion bombardment or stresses.

Vreeland’s work in the 1990s included studies of how powders can be consolidated into bulk materials by subjecting them to strong mechanical shocks.

“Thad Vreeland took pride in laboratory technique and had both skill

and style in building his own equipment, often frugally,” says Fultz. “With the University of Pennsylvania’s David Pope—then a Caltech graduate student—Vreeland designed and built a device for subjecting large crystals to pulsed torsional loads, and he built several x-ray diffractometers of unique design. Thad Vreeland’s shock wave consolidation facility used the barrel of a field gun that he reinforced for even higher velocities.”

Thad was a great scientist and he interacted well with various researchers and engineers across campus,” says Ares Rosakis, the Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics, professor of mechanical engineering, and chair of the Division

of Engineering and Applied Science, “particularly with the solid mechanics group associated both with aeronautics and mechanical engineering.”

Vreeland was born in 1924 and was a lifelong member of the Caltech community, receiving his BS in 1949, his MS in 1950, and his PhD in 1952. He joined the Caltech faculty in 1954 as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering.

Vreeland was a professor of materials science from 1968 until his retirement in 1991, whereupon he was named emeritus professor.

In addition to Mary, Vreeland is survived by his children—Michael, Terry, and Janet—and two grandchildren, Theresa and Johanna.

Anna in the Tropics Opens at Sierra Madre Playhouse Oct. 8 Anna in the Tropics is set in a Cuban-American cigar factory in 1929.

The local is Ybor City, a small town adjacent to Tampa, Florida. In those days, cigars were rolled by hand. Then, as now, a Cuban seed hand-rolled cigar is a sought-after sensual delight.

The factory employs a lector to educate and entertain workers as they engage day after day in their repetitive tasks. The lector is a man with a wonderful speaking voice who reads to the workers from books, making their labor bearable. The factory’s old lector has died, so a new one is hired to take his place. The new man is Juan Julian, young, handsome and silken voiced.

sen to read is Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina.”

The Russian classic novel deals with, among its many concerns, a great romance, passion and a married woman’s succumbing to illicit desires.

Julian’s skilled, soulful delivery of the narrative ignites certain feelings and emotions in the female workers. Some of the men become jealous.

Steamy southern heat, lust, the sensuality of fine tobacco – these are the ingredients for the fierce tropical storm that is surely brewing.

MHS All-Class Reunion Raises Funds for Band Trip to Carnegie Hall On Sunday, October 10th, there was a Monrovia High School all-class reunion at Santa Anita Park.

More than one hundred people from several classes turned out to catch up with their old friends, with the class of ’78 having the most in attendance.

One of the highlights of the day was the appearance of the MHS Wildcat Marching Band. The band has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in

2012, and was appearing at the reunion as a fundraiser, with half the money from the 50/50 raffle that took place at the reunion to be donated to the Band.

To the band’s good fortune, the winner of the 50/50 raffle was Tom Radu.

Radu (Class of ’77) was a member of the Marching Band during all four years of high school, and he elected to give his winnings to the band, doubling their take for the day.

There will be another All-Class Reunion on April 3rd, 2011. The April reunion will again feature the band, and be a fundraiser for their Carnegie Hall trip.

The 99 low-income children received much-needed dental care at no cost through this remakable Foothill Unity Center collaboration Here’s how it happened: When the University of Southern California School of Dentistry conducted free screenings at Foothill Unity Center’s 2009 annual Back to School event at Santa Anita race track. USC Doctors found 87% of the children had visible decay.

15% had urgent care conditions that included abscesses and accompanying pain.

Dental problems are the primary reason children miss school. Foothill Unity Center, the USC Mobile Dental Clinic team, and the Monrovia Unified School District worked together to help find a partial solution.

On October 9-15, the USC team presented a weeklong mobile clinic for local low-income families whose children had serious dental conditions. The event, held at Plymouth Elementary School in Monrovia, began Friday and Saturday with care and evalua¬tion for all children including X-rays, cleaning, sealants, and a plan of treat¬ment. Children returned during the week as many times as needed complete the treatments from USC dental students and faculty, supervised by li-

censed pediatric and general dentists. The work was done in a fleet of converted RVs equipped with full dental equipment and furnishings.

While the USC Mobile Clinic is a model of organization, its visit to Plymouth Elementary demanded a separate set of complex logistics. They were masterminded by Foothill Unity Center Health Services Director Cathy Klose, RN., in collaboration with Loretta Whitson, Director of Student Support Services for MUSD. Center volunteers were positioned throughout the program area to provide directions, handle sign-ins, and help keep the process running smoothly.

An estimated $1,500 to $2,000 worth of free dental services was provided to each child. Much of the amount was covered by donations from the community. “We’re very grateful to our sponsors for making this event possible,” said the Center’s Executive Director, Joan Whitenack. “Key funders of the $51,000 USC Dental Project include the San Marino Women’s Club ($25,000), Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park ($15,000) and a host of individual contributors. Dentistry Mobile Clinic came into being in 1968, serving migrant farm workers in Central and Southern California at clinics set up in school gymnasiums and recreation centers. Early on, it depended on the ingenuity and passion of student volunteers, who devised such innovative methods as using a paint compressor to power air-turbine handpieces to provide service to isolated and underserved populations In 1969, USC alumnus Walter Kiefer, president of Condor Coach Company, donated a coach to the program. It was outfitted for mobile dentistry through a grant from the Doris Duke Foundation. A year later, faculty member Charles Goldstein became advisor to the program he would spearhead for over three decades.

In 1971, to meet increased demand for services, dental students from UCLA joined the program To date, the Mobile Clinic has served more than 80,000 children in need.

Each year, the program holds more than a dozen week-long clinics in both rural and urban Southern and Central California. It now has five vehicles, including a sterilization van and modern, portable dental equipment. Since 1994 the Mobile Clinic has been a required clinical rotation for all doctoral dental students.

Santa Anita track work is well underway to remove the controversial synthetic Pro Ride track

C

onstruction to replace Santa Anita’s synthetic main track with a natural dirt surface began on Monday and it is anticipated work on the project will continue into early December. Horses are projected to return to training over the one mile oval on Dec. 6, roughly three weeks in advance of Santa Anita’s traditional winter/spring meeting opener on Dec. 26.

“This marks the beginning of a very important chapter in our history here at Santa Anita,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “There is a great deal of anticipation from all corners of the Thoroughbred industry and we’re very excited to get this project underway and to return to live racing.”

Santa Anita was required by mandate from the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) to install a synthetic main track in the fall of 2007. In order to remain in compliance with CHRB regulations, Santa Anita recently petitioned the CHRB to issue a waiver to this mandate.

Haines noted that in order for the waiver to be granted, the top layer of the new track surface will

need to undergo a variety of tests which will be overseen by the CHRB. “We are currently working with both the California Thoroughbred Trainers (CTT) and the CHRB, and together, we’re developing a consensus with regard to the composition of the various soils that we’ll be using,” said Haines.

MI Developments (MID), Santa Anita’s parent company, has dispatched Ted Malloy, who has been involved with the installation of several tracks around the country and who has been involved in track maintenance for more than 38 years, to oversee the project.

“We just started to take the synthetic material off today,” said Malloy on Monday. “We’ve had skip loaders out on the track, piling it up and we’ll start hauling it off tomorrow. We anticipate it’ll take about two weeks to remove all of the synthetic material.

“We hope to clear the rocks underneath, which are part of the drainage system, the following week (Oct. 24-30).”

Malloy said following the removal of the current drainage system, work will

begin on installing an organic base.

“After the rocks are completely removed, the new base material will be applied and we anticipate that will take about two weeks (Oct. 31-Nov. 13).

After the base is in place and compacted to proper density, we’ll start to apply the cushion mix, which is what we run on.”

Malloy noted that the cushion will be mixed by Vulcan Materials in nearby Irwindale.

“The soils will be coming from several different places and Vulcan will make the cushion mix out of a conglomeration of several types of sands and clay, to our specifications.

“After the cushion is in place, we will harrow and water it until the material is stabilized and this should take at least one week.”

Santa Anita is currently closed for training but is open for simulcast wagering on tracks around the country, including Hollywood Park.

For the period of Sunday, October 3 through Saturday, October 9, the Police Department responded to 1,007 calls for service of which 112 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

An auto burglary occurred in the 900 block of West Huntington Dr. between, 6:30 p.m. on October 4, 2010, and 8:30 a.m. on October 5, 2010. Unknown suspect(s) smashed the front right-side window with an unknown blunt object and stole the victims GPS.

Sunday, October 3: Officer’s responded to the 900 block of West Duarte Road regarding a vehicle burglary. At approximately 7:30 p.m. the victim parked his car in his detached garage, secured the windows but left the doors unlocked, did not set the car alarm and did not close the rolling garage door. Taken was a GPS, a bottle of cologne, a pair of sunglasses and an I phone charger.

Officers responded to the 100 block of West Leroy Ave. regarding a grand theft.

The victim’s vehicle was parked in the driveway and was left unlocked. Stolen was a digital camera, a GPS and an Apple Ipod. The total loss was $900.00.

Wednesday, October 6: Officers responded to 12 N. First Street, The Frame House, regarding a vandalism investigation. Unknown suspect(s) inscribed several words on the victim’s business windows using an unknown hard object and white paint. Officers at the scene noticed five other businesses on the same block had also been vandalized.

A grand theft occurred between September 29, 2010, and October 5, 2010, in the 1100 block of Louis Street. Unknown suspect(s) entered the house by unknown means and stole several items of jewelry from the bathroom. The total amount of property stolen was in excess of $10,000.

Monday, October 4: The victim came to the station around 12:42 p.m. to report a battery. The victim observed a suspect by his vehicle and approached the suspect, which was known to him. The suspect was the victim’s former employer.

The two engaged in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical fight.

Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Colorado Blvd. regarding a check written with insufficient funds complaint. Between August 3, 2010 and September 9, 2010, the victim worked for JKC Productions LLC. On September 2, 2010, the victim was given a Bank of America check for $1,200.00 for his services.

On September 3, 2010, the victim attempted to cash the check but could not due to insufficient funds. He later finds out that the account has been closed and the company is no longer in business.

Thursday, October 7: On October 7, 2010, around 9:40 a.m. the First Bank branch manager came to the station to file a fraud report. On September 21, 2010, a known suspect came to the bank and deposited a check in the amount of $2,953.20. The check later returned as an altered/fictitious check. First Bank has attempted to reach the suspect regarding the fraudulent check but has been unsuccessful.

Officers respond to an audible alarm in the 100 block of El Dorado Street.

Upon arrival the officers saw that the front door had been forced open and the master bedroom had been ransacked. An unknown amount of property had been taken.

Tuesday, October 5: Officers were dispatched to 40 N. First Avenue, Yvonne’s Hair Studio, regarding a vandalism investigation. The victim arrived at her hair studio around 9:00 a.m. and found that her business sign next to the main entrance had been vandalized with some type

Friday, October 8: Officers responded to 11621 Clark Street, Total Office Solutions, Inc., regarding a commercial burglary.

The unknown suspect(s) entered the business through the front door by unknown means, since there was no damage or signs of forced entry. The suspect took various specialty computer tools, a vacuum cleaner and a portable stereo.

A traffic stop for an equipment violation was

made on Camino Real Avenue around 11:43 p.m.

When contact was made with the driver, the officer noticed the driver’s eyes were bloodshot and red and he also noticed the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. During a consensual search of the vehicle, the officer found a green plastic bottle on the front passenger floorboard. Inside the bottle was a green leafy substance.

The driver was cited and released at the scene.

Saturday, October 9: Officers were dispatched to Westfield Shopping Center where JcPenny Loss Prevention Officers were holding a female adult in custody for theft. The suspect was seen and caught on video surveillance cameras selecting numerous items from the sales rack and concealing them in her purse and pants pockets then walking out of the store without paying for the items. The total amount of stolen items was $472.99. The suspect was taken into custody and booked for grand theft.

Officers were dispatched to the Westfield Shopping Center parking lot around 10:21 p.m. in reference to a battery report.

The victim stated he was approached by an acquaintance who said he needed to talk to him. The victim followed the suspect into an elevator. Once inside the elevator, the suspect began hitting the victim with a closed fist in the head and face.

Monrovia PD

During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 526 service events, resulting in 123 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events:

Robbery September 23 at 6:27 a.m., an officer responded to Duarte and Myrtle regarding a robbery that had just occurred. A female victim reported that a male subject in his early 20s, thin build, buzzed haircut, no facial hair, and wearing a baggie gray sweatshirt exited a vehicle and punched her. The suspect grabbed her purse

and got back into a black, four-door vehicle, possibly a Nissan Maxima, and fled southbound on Myrtle. The victim sustained a cut above her right eye. Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft September 23 at 12:54 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of West Duarte regarding a theft. The victim parked his motorized bicycle in front of his door in the evening, but failed to secure it. The next day, he went outside to go to work and found his bicycle was missing. He did not hear anything suspicious during the night.

Possession of a Controlled Substance - Suspects Arrested September 24 at 2:18 a.m., an officer observed a suspicious vehicle near a business in the 3000 block of Peck Road. As the officer approached the vehicle, the female passenger tossed a folded one dollar bill out the window.

The officer retrieved the bill and found cocaine inside. Both female subjects were taken into custody, one for an outstanding warrant and the other for the possession of a controlled substance.

Assault September 24 at 2:41 p.m., an officer met with the victim of an assault who had come to the police station to file a report. The victim was in a wheelchair and was accompanied by a friend. The victim reported that he had been at a bar in 300 block of West Huntington on Friday, September 17. He said he had been drinking and that two subjects had assaulted him. He was driven to a hospital and admitted for injuries. The victim did not have much information to provide about the incident.

Investigation continuing.

Residential Burglary On September 24 at 10:41 p.m., an officer responded to the 500 block of East Foothill regarding a residential burglary. Unknown suspects had entered the victim’s residence and the victim’s rear house through open bathroom windows.

Once inside, the locations the suspects stole a television set and power tools. The investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence - Suspect Arrested September 25 at 2:34 a.m., an officer stopped a motorist at Evergreen and Mayflower for an unsafe turning movement. A subsequent investigation revealed the driver was intoxicated.

The driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

Grand Theft September 25 at 10:41 a.m., an officer responded to the parking lot of a business in the 100 block of West Foothill regarding a theft. The female victim had pushed her shopping cart to her vehicle. As she opened the door of her car, a vehicle pulled up next to the shopping cart and a subject grabbed her purse from the cart and fled in the vehicle.

Investigation continuing.

Burglary September 25 at 3:56 p.m., a business in the 500 block of West Huntington reported a theft. An officer responded and determined a subject had walked into the store, grabbed a mesh shopping bag, selected three men’s electric shavers and exited the store without paying. As the loss prevention officers exited the store, they saw the suspect getting into a burgundy Toyota Camry that fled the scene. Investigation continuing.

Possession of a Controlled Substance - Suspect Arrested September 26 at 3:55 a.m., an officer was on patrol and saw a suspicious vehicle parked on Ivy, south of Huntington. As he made contact with the occupant, he noticed the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The suspect admitted to having marijuana and ecstasy pills in his vehicle and consented to a search of the vehicle. The officer located a small amount of marijuana and 16 tablets of Ecstasy that were concealed in the door panel of the vehicle. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Grand Theft Auto Recovery / Mental Evaluation September 27 at 8:52 p.m., dispatch received a call reporting that a mentally unstable, male subject had left a facility in Pasadena and

was possibly in the Monrovia area, as his mother lives in Monrovia. He had gone to his grandparent’s home in Arcadia, where he stole his grandfather’s truck. His grandfather reported the truck stolen with Arcadia Police Department. Officers located the subject and detained him. They confirmed he had taken the truck without permission. He stated voices in his head told him to take the truck. The subject was taken to a hospital and held for mental evaluation.

The truck was recovered and returned to the grandparents.

Sierra Madre PD

During the week of Sunday, October 3rd, to Saturday October 9th, the Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 302 calls for service.

Sunday, October 3rd: 3:00 PM- Battery, 100 block N. Mountain Trail Ave. A resident reported a domestic fight call. Upon officers’ arrival, neither party was interested in prosecution.

Thursday October 7th: 5:21 PM- Use Another’s Personal Identification to Obtain Credit/Etc, 600 block Camillo St. No additional information available.

Friday October 8th: 9:47 AM- Grand Theft Exceeding $400.00, 100 blk.

N Baldwin Ave. Suspect(s) entered an unlocked parked car and took a Dell 15” laptop computer valued at $1800.00, two external hard drives valued at $400.00 and a checkbook valued at $35.00. Item were later found at a Pasadena golf course.

1:58 PM- Inflicting Corporal Injury on Spouse, 600 blk. Oakcrest Dr. Officers responded to a call of an argument between a boyfriend and girlfriend. Officers determined that the man was a danger to himself and others. He was detained for a 72 hour psychiatric evaluation.

2:33PM- Grand Theft Exceeding $400.00, Baldwin Ave and Laurel Ave. A suspect entered an unlocked and parked car and stole a Blackberry cell phone, $7.00 in cash, and a wallet containing credit cards.
