ierra Madre residents will get the chance to ask questions and share their opinions about the city’s water operations and potential rate increase rates at a special City Council Meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. While there will be additional opportunities to comment, “the Oct. 19 meeting is being held at an important juncture in the City Council’s deliberation process” according to a city mailer. City officials launched an “education and public outreach program” this summer after it opted to table a proposed water rate hike that would have raised rates between about 33 percent and 37.5 percent over five years. A total of 1,719 valid protests were received against the proposed rate hike, which is 129 short of the 1,848 needed for a majority to defeat the proposal. However, council members said the number of protests received was a reason re-examine the proposal and increase dialogue with water customers. The Oct. 19 City Council meeting will be held at 232 W. Sierra Madre Boulevard.
