'I

would never quit on my city,' says mayor amid recall effort over Palisades Fire

Facing mounting criticism and a recall effort Wednesday over her handling to the Palisades Fire, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared, "I would never quit on my city."

The recall campaign is led by Nicole Shanahan, the former running mate of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. According to the recall website, the effort is also supported by some Palisades residents.

On Tuesday, during an interview with KNX News, the mayor reaffirmed she is "here now, and I'm running."

"I would never quit on my city. This is where I was born and raised," Bass told the radio station. "Did I know that it was a difficult job? Absolutely. Am I ready for the job? Most definitely."

The mayor, who is up for reelection in 2026, has already launched her campaign.

"I mean, anybody that runs for office — if you're not emotionally ready to accept that — then you're in the wrong business," Bass told KNX.

The recall effort will require 330,000 ballot signatures to progress, which will need to be obtained within a span of four months.

Douglas Herman, a political strategist for Bass'

campaign, told City News Service on March 4, that the recall committee's filing was "nothing more than another extreme right-wing political stunt designed to divide Los Angeles when we need to move forward."

He added that spending millions of dollars on a recall election should be better spent on rebuilding. Since the wildfires in January, Bass has faced growing criticism over her response and leadership.

The Palisades fire broke out on Jan. 7, and residents have faulted her for being out of the country in its early days.

Concerns have also mounted over fire hydrant issues, low

water pressure in the Palisades and limited resources within the Fire Department.

Former Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, which is the union representing LA firefighters, and LA City Controller Kenneth Mejia highlighted that the fire department's operational budget was reduced by $17 million in the fiscal year 2024-25 adopted budget.

Bass and City Council members have refuted that figure, noting the LAFD received an increase in $50 million due to a new contract with the firefighters union.

The Los Angeles Times has also reported on tensions

between Bass, her recovery czar Steve Soboroff and county leaders.

According to a survey from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, co-sponsored by The LA Times, slightly over 40% of registered voters in the city thought Bass did a "poor or very poor job in responding to the fires," while another 19% of respondents thought her response was "excellent or good."

A little more than 1 in 5 city residents, or about 22%, thought she was doing a fair job, and the remainder had no opinion.

"The mayor is focused on recovery, which right now is months ahead of expectations, and she is going to continue pushing it forward," Zach Seidl, spokesman for Bass, said in response to the poll.

Bass entered office in 2022 after defeating her opponent, billionaire Rick Caruso. She's the first woman and second Black mayor of Los Angeles.

In recent weeks, Caruso has made headlines with the launch of Steadfast LA, a private-sector-led recovery effort, sparking speculation about a possible mayoral run. He has yet to make an official announcement.

Crews remove 50% of hazardous materials from fire areas

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has removed hazardous waste from half of the 4,499 properties deferred to it by the Environmental Protection Agency during Phase 1 of the household hazardous materials removal operation from the deadly January wildfires, officials said Monday.

The 50% benchmark comes seven days after the U.S. EPA's deadline for completing Phase 1 work in wildfireaffected parts of Altadena, Pasadena, Pacific Palisades and Malibu.

The EPA initially conducted HHM removal on approximately 9,000 properties damaged in the Eaton and Palisades fires, but some sites posed safety risks such as structurally compromised buildings, unstable terrain or limited access. EPA officials deferred those properties to the Corps of Engineers to implement safety measures before removal could start.

As of Saturday, the corps had finished removing hazardous materials from 2,269 properties.

Newsom extends housing protections for wildfire victims

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday issued an executive order to continue protections for renters and homeowners recovering from the Los Angeles wildfires.

The order extends state price gouging restrictions for rental housing, hotels and short-term accommodations, extends support for survivors sheltering in hotels and short-term housing and gives priority to fire survivors experiencing homelessness for statefunded housing.

"As the Los Angeles community continues to recover and rebuild, the state remains steadfast in its commitment to providing targeted relief and assistance," Newsom said in a statement. "Today I am issuing an executive order to further ensure that survivors are protected from exploitation and can access housing they need."

housing as tenants after 30 days of residency. Officials said this gives people more time to find alternative housing.

Friday's action extends several executive orders that were about to expire. The order's aim is to encourage immediate access to housing and protect tenants from exploitation, officials said.

The anti-price gouging order extends to July 1 and applies to rental rates for residences, hotels and motels. It also prohibits evictions of tenants so that the landlord can relist the unit at a higher rate, "while retaining exemptions for large homes in zip codes with high fair market values which have not recently been on the rental market to help ensure they are available for rental during recovery efforts," according to the governor's office. The order exempts newly built housing in an effort to increase the housing supply with pricing flexibility for new buildings subject to higher financing costs.

Newsom's order also suspends state laws that classify guests at hotels, motels and temporary

Fire survivors experiencing homelessness will receive priority placement on waiting lists for statefunded housing, and the order supports restoring two Altadena commercial corridors to their pre-fire character.

"Two thriving commercial corridors in Altadena were destroyed by the fires, and to ensure these culturally significant corridors can be rebuilt to their pre-fire character and contribute to a walkable, resource-rich community, state laws that might otherwise limit the ability to maintain the same pedestrian character and ground floor commercial space should be suspended in these areas," according to the executive order.

LA County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger, whose 5th District includes areas devastated in the Eaton Fire, welcomed the extended protections and noted the order's "key provision affecting future development in Altadena’s commercial corridors" on Lake and Fair Oaks avenues.

“I commend Governor

Newsom for taking decisive action to preserve commercial space along these two critical corridors," Barger said in a statement. "Altadena’s local economy may be small, but it is powered by resilient, hardworking small businesses. As these businesses continue to recover and rebuild — or, for those that remain open, strive to survive despite the challenges of a displaced customer base — this executive order will serve as an important safeguard to preserve commercial space and the local economy.

"By preventing the permanent loss of commercial sites in our business corridors, the governor’s action ensures that our small businesses can continue to serve the community without the looming threat of redevelopment pressures pushing them out," Barger said. "Recovery isn’t just about residents returning to their homes — it’s about ensuring that the restaurants, coffee shops, dry cleaners, and other essential services they rely on remain in place to help them rebuild their daily lives."

Barger added that the order "also ensures that future development

enhances — rather than undermines — the community’s pedestrian-friendly design and vibrant business environment. This balanced approach is key to preserving Altadena’s unique character while also expanding much-needed housing opportunities.

"I encourage our local stakeholders to seize this opportunity to collaborate on smart, sustainable development solutions that serve our residents. Together, we can shape a future for Altadena that protects its charm while thoughtfully addressing its housing needs,” she said.

The Eaton Fire claimed 17 lives and destroyed or damaged over 10,000 structures in Altadena and Pasadena. It's cause was still under investigation, but numerous lawsuits have been filed against Southern California Edison alleging the utility's equipment sparked the firestorm.

The Palisades Fire caused 12 deaths and destroyed or damaged nearly 8,000 buildings in Pacific Palisades and Malibu. Both blazes erupted Jan. 7 amid fierce Santa Ana winds.

The executive order is available for viewing online at gov.ca.gov.

Choosing the Perfect Summer Camp: Day or Overnight?

Summer camp season is upon us, and parents are faced with the choice of whether to send their children to day camps or overnight camps. According to experts and camp directors, the decision largely depends on the child's personality, age, and comfort with independence. Day camps function much like school, operating during the day and allowing children to return home at night. These camps are often more affordable, providing structured activities such as sports and arts without the stress of overnight stays, which makes them ideal for younger children or first-time campers. Additionally, the flexible options of enrolling daily or weekly can cater to busy family schedules.

Overnight camps, on the other hand, offer a more immersive experience. They allow children to develop independence, make deep friendships, and participate in adventurous activities like campfires and overnight trips. This full immersion can be both a pro and a con; while it fosters self-

reliance, it can also lead to homesickness, particularly in younger children. However, the experience can be invaluable for older children ready to embrace self-sufficiency and responsibility. Choosing the right camp involves considering factors such as the child's age, maturity, and personality. It’s crucial to match the camp's focus with the child’s interests, whether they lean towards STEM, sports, or nature exploration. Yet, the cost factor plays a significant role, with overnight camps generally being more expensive than day camps due to accommodations and extended activities. "Camp selection is fundamentally about fit," says camp consultant Kim Smith. "Finding a camp that resonates with your child’s interests and comfort zones can make all the difference in their summer experience." Whether opting for the comfort of day camps or the adventure of overnight camps, both options promise an enriching and beneficial experience for children, aiding their growth in various life skills.

ENational Cancer Institute employees can’t publish information on these topics without special approval

was

mployeesatthe

National Cancer Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, received internal guidance last week to flag manuscripts, presentations or other communications for scrutiny if they addressed “controversial, high profile, or sensitive” topics. Among the 23 hot-button issues, according to internal records reviewed by ProPublica: vaccines, fluoride, peanut allergies, autism.

While it’s not uncommon for the cancer institute to outline a couple of administration priorities, the scope and scale of the list is unprecedented and highly unusual, said six employees who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly. All materials must be reviewed by an institute “clearance team,” according to the records, and could be examined by officials at the NIH or its umbrella agency, the U.S. Department

of Health and Human Services.

Staffers and experts worried that the directive would delay or halt the publication of research.

“This is micromanagement at the highest level,” said Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association.

The list touches on the personal priorities of HHS

Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime anti-vaccine activist who has repeatedly promoted medical conspiracy theories and false claims. He has advanced the idea that rising rates of autism are linked to vaccines, a claim that has been debunked by hundreds of scientific studies.

He has also suggested that aluminum in vaccines is responsible for childhood allergies (his son reportedly is severely allergic to peanuts).

And he has claimed that water fluoridation — which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called “one of the 10 greatest public

When you are impacted by a layoff, it can legitimately feel worse than you had even imagined. It can be hard for friends or family to relate to what you're going through unless they've been through it.

In confirmation hearings in January, Kennedy said that he was not “anti-vaccine,” and that as secretary, he would not discourage people from getting immunized

intended for the program to cut the nation’s cancer death rate by at least half and prevent more than 4 million deaths.

The list is “an unusual mix of words that are tied to activities that this administration has been at war with — like

for measles or polio, but he dodged questions about the link between autism and vaccines.

Another term on the list, “cancer moonshot,” refers to a programlaunched by President Barack Obama in 2016. It was a priority of the Biden administration, which

OPINION

The guidance states that staffers “do not need to share content describing the routine conduct of science if it will not get major media attention, is not controversial or sensitive, and does not touch on an administration priority.”

A longtime senior employee at the institute said that the directive was circulated by the institute’s communications team, and the content was not discussed at the leadership level. It is not clear in which exact office the directive originated. The NCI, NIH and HHS did not respond to ProPublica’s emailed questions. (The existence of the list was first revealed in social media posts on Friday.)

Health and research experts told ProPublica they feared the chilling effect of the new guidance. Not only might it lead to a lengthier and more complex clearance process, it may also cause researchers to censor their work out of fear or deference to the administration’s priorities.

“This is real interference in the scientific process,” said Linda Birnbaum, a former director of the National

uncommon for an employer to lay off workers with no notice and no severance. It's like a breakup, except there may also be an immediate loss of income, healthcare, and other benefits. On top of the financial loss, there is often a loss of identity. Until it happens, many people don't think about how much of their identity is tied up in work. But, if you've worked at your company for fifteen years, for example, you may be used to introducing yourself with your job title. It's who you

are, and what you do every day. It's where your friends are.

A sudden lack of purpose and structure can get anyone down. Even those who are the most resilient may find themselves in a slump. And, it's an easy thing to have happen. When applying for jobs, it may feel like there are countless applicants for very few jobs openings.

In an effort to be supportive, a friend or family member will often offer advice. Sometimes, that advice is that you should consider becoming

self-employed. You could make your own hours, and earn way more money. And, it would be easier than finding a job, right? Think again. Being self-employed is a tremendous amount of work. This is especially true early on in your entrepreneurial journey. Sure, other business owners make it look easy. This is because they don't want to be perceived as a failure. They want their business to appear to be on solid ground. The reality is that being an entrepreneur is hard work. Rarely can you get by with just one

Institute of Environmental Health Sciences who served as a federal scientist for four decades. The list, she said, “just seems like Big Brother intimidation.”

During the first two months of Donald Trump’s second presidency, his administration has slashed funding for research institutions and stalled the NIH’s grant application process.

Kennedy has suggested that hundreds of NIH staffers should be fired and said that the institute should deprioritize infectious diseases like COVID-19 and shift its focus to chronic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity.

Obesity is on the NCI’s new list, as are infectious diseases including COVID-19, bird flu and measles.

The “focus on bird flu and covid is concerning,” Woodruff wrote, because “not being transparent with the public about infectious diseases will not stop them or make them go away and could make them worse.”

client. Typically, you need at least five clients at any given time.

Imagine how hard it is to find one job. Then, multiply that times five. And, subtract out things like business expenses. Plus, there will also be times that you may make no money at all, such as over holidays.

Don't get me wrong. For some people, entrepreneurship is in their bones. If that's you, you probably already know it.

For everyone else, keep applying to job openings.

Keep revising your resume. Keep updating your LinkedIn profile. Keep scheduling networking meetings. I know it's hard. But, eventually you will find one job. And, that one job will likely provide more stability and more money in the long run than being self-employed. I know it's hard. Starting over always is. But, the only way is to go through it. Katie Porter announces she is running for governor

Katie Porter, the former Democratic congresswoman from Irvine who ran for U.S. Senate and lost in the primary in 2024, is running for governor of California, she announced in a video Tuesday.

Porter joins an already crowded field for the 2026 election to succeed the termed-out Gavin Newsom.

"What California needs now is a little bit of hope and a whole lot of grit, fresh blood and new ideas, leaders with the backbone to fight for what's right," Porter said in a video announcing her campaign. "That's why I am running for governor."

She also said she wants to protect California from policies set by President Donald Trump, who has threatened to withhold disaster relief and, Porter said, imperiled "working families to benefit himself and his cronies."

Porter is the latest prominent candidate to join the race.

Other hopefuls include Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis; former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; state Controller Betty Yee; state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond; former state Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins; and businessman Stephen Cloobeck — all Democrats — as well as Republican Chad Bianco, the Riverside County sheriff.

One potential candidate who has not yet entered the race is former Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. She has said she would make her decision at the end of the summer. Her name recognition and fundraising success could make her a favorite.

"If Vice President Harris were to choose to run, I am certain that that would have a near field-clearing effect on the Democratic side," Porter said.

Porter, 51, served three terms in the House but did not seek re- election in 2024. Instead, she ran for the U.S. Senate seat eventually won by Adam Schiff, finishing third in the primary. Porter then returned to teaching at UC Irvine's law school.

Bianco released a statement Tuesday attacking Porter shortly after she announced her candidacy.

"Katie Porter is a failed progressive Democrat with a history of supporting policies that increased inflation, grocery, gas and energy prices," Bianco said in a statement released by his campaign.

"She is cut from the same

Porter said in December, at a post-election conference at UC Irvine, that if Harris joined the race, it would prompt some Democrats to drop out.

cloth of the failed career politicians who created California's cost-of-living crisis. We cannot expect the same people who created this mess to get us out of it. Californians deserve so much better."

Will O'Neill, chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County, also criticized Porter, posting on X, "We finally get to turn the page on Governor Newsom's disastrous run as Governor, but former Representative Katie Porter looks like she's using the same tired playbook. I debated her on real policy solutions at U.C. Irvine in December and was surprised by how dismissive she was of concrete successes for certain cities' homelessness reductions here in Orange County. Porter is simply not the right candidate at a time when Californians want real solutions to real problems."

Survey: Almost 60% of California Black women report discrimination at work

New research finds Black working women still face rampant discrimination in the Golden State. The California Black Women's Collective Empowerment Institute commissioned a survey of 452 Black women. Almost 60% reported

experiencing workplace racism or gender discrimination in the past year.

Shakari Byerly, managing partner of EVITARUS Research, conducted the survey.

"Nearly half feel marginalized, excluded from or passed over for work oppor-

tunities," Byerly reported. "Only 16% strongly agree that opportunities for leadership and or advancement in their workplace are available to them."

Among respondents, 59% reported being somewhat satisfied in their job but 38% said they are

unsatisfied, with company leadership and work culture to blame. They also cited microaggressions, wage disparities and lack of mentoring or access to leadership roles.

Byerly noted one-third of those surveyed said they do not feel supported by

their supervisor at work.

"They were subjected to stereotypes, were talked down to, or subjected to disrespectful communication at work," Byerly explained. "And 38% say they were accused or thought of as an angry Black woman."

The report called on the state to enforce pay equity, expand antidiscrimination protections and ensure workplace accountability. They called on companies to invest in Black women's leadership development and eliminate bias in workplace culture.

EL Monte City Notices

Book 'Los Angeles Before the Freeways' captures images of lost architectural gems

In Los Angeles County, freeways are a ubiquitous part of our surroundings. It’s hard to imagine a time when we traveled the expanse of the region on city streets. As population increased and more cars traversed the roads, freeways were constructed to make driving safer for people and areas more accessible.

Several hundred buildings were demolished to make way for the construction of these freeways. The book “Los Angeles Before the Freeways: Images of An Era 1850-1950” gives a lush, visual tour of a Los Angeles that no longer exists — one of elegant office buildings and stately mansions that were razed in the name of “progress.” Originally published by Dawson’s Book Shop in 1981, it has become a cult classic among LA’s architectural historians.

Gorgeous black-and-white photos from Arnold Hylen that capture a forgotten era are showcased in the book. It has an original essay by the photographer that provides historical background and context for the time period. This new edition from Angel City Press, to be released on March 25, contains additional, never-before-seen photographs from Hylen and newly unearthed information from historian Nathan Marsak on these lost architectural treasures.

Marsak discussed via email how he became an LA historian — despite not being

a native Angeleno — and the upcoming book “Los Angeles Before the Freeways” and why it’s important to get it republished.

“I was born and raised in Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles was like a weird, distant backyard,” he began.

“Our television stations were all out of LA so I became obsessed with, for example, commercials for Zachary All and Cal Worthington. Then we’d go to LA and it was so different from the pictureperfect neighborhoods of Santa Barbara; in the 1970s Los Angeles was pretty treeless, covered in billboards, blanketed in smog. Like a dying civilization, but with so many insane neon signs, so much bizarre architecture.”

The career choice, however, was preordained. Marsak explained, “My father was a historian and I follow in his footsteps. While other parents took their kids to baseball games, I was being led through Florentine museums or the cathedrals of France. I would have been destined to become a historian no matter where I landed, but I’m very glad my home became Los Angeles.”

Taking up roots in LA, though, was happenstance.

“In the early 1990s, I was out in Wisconsin, going to graduate school and doing architectural history," Marsak disclosed. "But the lure of Southern California pulled me back, especially after I saw

the ’92 riots on TV. I packed my things, and read Raymond Chandler and James Ellroy to acquaint myself with my new home, and moved to East Hollywood and began looking for ‘Old LA.’

“Sometime in the mid-90s, I was in a downtown bar talking up the old timers about lost Los Angeles and one of them referred to Hylen and two books he published that contained the photos he took around here back in the fifties, and I immediately began combing the bookstores until I found Hylen’s 1976 ‘Bunker Hill’ book, and his 1981 ‘Los Angeles Before the Freeways.’”

And reading them became the impetus to discover the architectural history of his adopted home.

“I loved Hylen’s Freeways book, and used to drive around with it on my lap like a Thomas Guide of phantom Los Angeles,” said Marsak. “And because so few copies existed — Dawson’s Book Shop only printed 600 of them in 1981 — I made it my mission to reprint it.

“But for all of Hylen’s groundbreaking research, as included in his indispensable essay, there were unanswered questions,” Marsak continued. “I wanted to flesh out the buildings with the addition of their architects and construction dates. Naturally, as well, I wanted the images to be

Alma is a sweet and gentle 7-year-old Staffie with a heart full of love to give! This affectionate girl enjoys the simple things in life—leisurely walks, gentle exploration, and, most of all, cuddle time with her favorite humans. She walks beautifully on a leash, taking her time to sniff and enjoy her surroundings. Alma is likely housetrained and has a calm, easygoing nature that makes her a joy to have around. Whether you’re out for a relaxing stroll or curled up on the couch, she’ll happily be by your side. She thrives on love and companionship and would do best in a home where she can be part of the family. This sweet girl is very petite- she's just over 40 pounds- perfect size for most laps! Because of Alma’s age, she is eligible for Pasadena Humane’s Seniors for Seniors program. This means her adoption fee is waived for any adopter over 60 years young! If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion, Alma might just be your perfect match! Come meet her and see if she’s the missing piece to your heart and home.

William (A519736)

He’s a loyal, affectionate companion who thrives on human interaction and will happily spend his days by your side, whether you're relaxing at home or out exploring the great outdoors. William is fully housetrained and has great manners, making him an easy addition to the right home. While he adores people, he prefers to be the only pet in the household—he’s not a fan of other dogs and would do best as the sole canine king of his castle. If you’re looking for a devoted friend who will greet you with a wagging tail every day, William is your guy! One of William’s absolute favorite activities is playing in the water. Whether it’s a lake, a kiddie pool, or even a hose in the backyard, he’s happiest when splashing around. If you enjoy spending time near the water, William will be the perfect adventure buddy! If you think you could give William the loving, dog-free home he deserves, come meet him—he’s ready to be your best friend for life!

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines. Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 10:00 –5:00. View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org. New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet. Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.

Wildfire victims get extension to apply for FEMA, unemployment aid

Los Angeles County wildfire victims now have until March 31 to apply for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday.

Monday was the previous deadline.

"Thank you to FEMA and the Trump administration for granting California's request to extend the individual assistance program as our communities in Los Angeles continue to rebuild and recover," Newsom said in a statement. "I urge Angelenos impacted by the Eaton and Palisades to apply for federal assistance to help get back on their feet."

FEMA aid can go toward rent, temporary housing, home repairs, replacing lost personal property and other disaster-related needs not covered by insurance, according to the governor's office. FEMA grants do not have to

be repaid, are nontaxable and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid or other federal benefits.

To apply, go to disasterassistance.gov, call 800-6213362 or visit a Disaster Recovery Center in Altadena at 540 W. Woodbury Road or in West LA at UCLA Research Park West, 10850 West Pico Blvd.

"Survivors who have insurance are encouraged to file a claim for disaster-caused damage with your insurance company before they apply for FEMA assistance," according to the governor's office.

"Survivors do not need to wait for an insurance settlement to apply for FEMA assistance. FEMA may provide financial assistance to eligible survivors who are uninsured or underinsured."

A new March 31 application deadline is also now in place for disaster unemployment assistance, which assists workers ineligible for regular unemployment benefits who lost jobs or had hours cut as a result of the wildfires. The California Employment Development Department is accepting applications.

larger, and clearer, and that would require being in possession of the original negatives, which I finally managed to purchase in 2016.

“This is not a book about buildings that were only lost to freeways,” Marsak clarified. “It also includes some structures that were demolished when the Hollywood Freeway made its easterly path through Fort Moore hill, and of course there are some images of the Harbor Freeway as it was constructed west of Bunker Hill. But most of the structures contained herein were lost to parking lots, or the expansion of the Civic Center. An accurate number for how many structures were razed because of freeway construction would be difficult to gauge, but a safe bet is about 1,000.”

Marsak added, “I hope readers take away that there were first-rate domestic and commercial structures by top-flight architects in the 19th century. Naturally, the fact that the majority of the structures featured have been wiped away, I also hope causes

readers to become active with preservation in their communities.”

Through this book, Marsak would also like us to have a better appreciation for the city.

“There’s more to Victorian LA than just the Queen Anne houses on Carroll Avenue or at Heritage Square, but we once had an incredible collection of Romanesque Revival, Italianate, and other styles blanketing the city in general, downtown in particular,” Marsak emphasized.

Unfortunately, these magnificent edifices didn’t survive the wrecking ball and

— but for the images in the book — no trace of their past existence remains.

“Very few people in postwar America were interested in architectural salvage from Victorian buildings,” Marsak lamented. “The Magic Castle, though, utilized parts of structures for its fanciful interior. And of course, most famously, two houses from Bunker Hill were moved to Montecito Heights as the first structures in the Heritage Square project. But they were sadly burned to the ground not long after their relocation.”

It’s a disgrace that the inspired works of eminent architects had to be sacrificed in the service of building something as pedestrian as a parking lot. Fortunately, we’re now repurposing the ruins of significant structures. Many home decorators and designers are sourcing demolished materials to integrate into new construction to imbue character and a distinctive look. It’s one way to ensure that torn down buildings are given a second life.

Supervisor Barger seeks health update on Chiquita Canyon Landfill

Los Angeles County SupervisorKathryn Bargerisseeking answers from local researchers on possible cancer risk and other adverse impacts from by the Chiquita Canyon Landfill.

In a letter sent Friday addressed to Dr. Amy Hwang, epidemiologist with the USC Cancer Surveillance Program, Barger repeated an October request for a cancer-cluster analysis in neighborhoods near the landfill.

The supervisor also asked researchers provide an update at the next meeting of the landfill's Community Advisory Committee scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday. Cancer surveillance program researchers agreed to present a briefing at the CAC's April 8 meeting, Barger spokeswoman Helen Chavez said.

The California Department of Public Health oversees the cancer monitoring program, which researches cancer trends in LA County.

“My constituents in the impacted communities have shared their frustration, anxiety, and uncertainty — I hear them loud and clear,” Barger said in a statement Monday. “They deserve straightforward answers, and I am committed to ensuring they get them. My priority is to push for transparency and

clear information.”

County officials commissioned an independent health study that found elevated levels of benzene and carbon tetrachloride, which pose health risks such as cancer and reproductive harm under prolonged exposure. The county is conducting an internetbased health survey for area residents, and officials have also been assessing resident claims the landfill has led to a cluster of cancer cases in the area.

As of Feb. 5, roughly half of respondents reported smelling offensive or highly offensive odors, and about 70% said they notice the odor daily.

"Residents of the Santa Clarita Valley continue to express significant concerns regarding the health impacts of the landfill, and the perceived increase in cancer cases," Barger wrote in her letter.

She acknowledged "that conducting a thorough analysis of cancer clusters can be a complex and timeconsuming process," but also noted "the health and well-being of our constituents is paramount, and the community deserves clarity on this important matter."

In January, the landfill's owners ceased operations but agreed to work to control

noxious odors that have been emanating from the facility, which they have attributed to an underground chemical reaction.

The Board of Supervisors instructed the Public Works Department to assess the closure's implications.

At the time, a group of residents from surrounding areas such as Val Verde and Castaic voiced the effect of the frequent odors. They called a local emergency declaration, which could provide immediate resources such as relocation assistance.

The county filed a federal lawsuit in December against Chiquita Canyon LLC over the continued noxious emissions.

A group of local residents sued the landfill's owners in October, alleging the company failed to properly manage the facility's gas capture, control systems and leachate systems. Leachate is a polluted liquid that materializes when rainwater filters through solid waste.

The alleged failures caused the emission of elevated and harmful levels of carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic gases, creating unsafe living conditions for thousands of residents, according to the residents' lawsuit.

In 2024, residents filed 13,000 odor complaints

regarding the landfill, according to the lawsuit.

Area residents have suffered headaches, nausea, respiratory issues and the inability to enjoy use of their properties because of the landfill's noxious odors, the suit states.

Landfill representatives said bad smells are from "an

Hazardous materials

abnormal biotic or abiotic process, also known as a landfill reaction, taking place deep within a lined but older and inactive portion of the landfill waste mess."

The county contends that residents have been forced to stay indoors, run air conditioning and heat during all times of the day

and have been unable to enjoy outdoor activities or even use their yards, further impacting mental health and well-being, especially for children.

The Chiquita Canyon Landfill's parent company is Waste Connections Inc. based in The Woodlands, Texas.

of urgency to help them move forward," Col. Eric Swenson, commander of the Corps of Engineers Los Angeles Wildfires Recovery Field Office, said in a statement. "Safely removing household hazardous materials is a critical first step, and we are pushing forward to complete Phase 1 as quickly as possible.

"At the same time, we are making steady progress in Phase 2 debris removal, with more than 125 properties completed and returned to the County, and over 400

parcels in various stages of hydromulch application, erosion control, and final sign-off," Swenson said.

"Every cleared property is a step closer to rebuilding, and we remain committed to working as safely and quickly as possible."

Before removing hazardous materials, the corps takes steps to stabilize conditions for safe access that include removing structurally unstable debris to prevent collapse risks, clearing hazardous materials that obstruct safe entry

and stabilizing terrain to protect workers, officials said.

"The Corps of Engineers is authorized to use heavy equipment and demolition if needed to safely complete these operations," according to the agency. "Once a property is secured, hazardous materials are removed following the same process used by the EPA."

On Feb. 22 in Malibu, officials marked the first wildfire-damaged property cleared by the Corps of

Engineers after Phase 2 of the debris removal process began. The agency expects all eligible properties enrolled in the government's debris removal program by the March 31 deadline will be cleared for rebuilding work by January. Residents affected by the wildfires were urged to submit the Right of Entry forms that authorize debris removal from their properties. Forms are available at recovery.lacounty.gov or in person at a Disaster Recovery Center.

Altadena park damaged in Eaton Fire to reopen in May

Altadena's Loma Alta Park, which was damaged in the Eaton Fire, will reopen in May, the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday.

In addition to rebuilding what was lost, plans are to enhance and expand current facilities and install new amenities.

“Under normal circumstances, for LA County Parks to build a new park, it takes roughly 18 months, but due to the expedient measures taken by both the state of California, County of Los Angeles, and the tireless efforts of countless LA County staff, our partners, and volunteers, that timeline has shrunk to merely 2 months,” Parks and Recreation Director Norma E.García-González, said in a statement. “The people devastated by the Eaton Fire need their community back, and LA County will heed the call. I am heartened to see how much support we’ve already received.”

Officials said financial support for the park repairs and upgrades came from:

-Fire Aid, the Jan. 30 benefit concerts in Los Angeles, announced a $2.4 million grant to rebuild the park's fire-damaged playgrounds and also expand playground features and accessibility.

-"With neighborhoods devastated by the fire, and families displaced, Altadena residents needed a place to congregate with their

community," according to LA County Parks. "Identifying this need for social connections, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger announced she would fund Alta Chat — a new meeting place and ‘hub’ for the community to relax and connect." This new space at the park will feature comfortable Adirondack chairs and other amenities intended "to inspire a much needed lost neighborhood connection."

-Dodgers Foundation CEO Nichol Whiteman announced funding for two Dodgers Dream Fields as well as baseball and softball programming, to help ensure that the Central Altadena Little League will play their last games at home in Loma Alta Park.

"All profits from the Dodgers opening day and World Series Ring Ceremony games

will go toward funding these projects and will be heavily advertised for those games," officials said.

- The Los Angeles Clippers' Community Clippers Court program will fund a makeover of the gymnasium and its sports courts and will offer the Junior Clippers Basketball Program for Altadena youth.

Loma Alta will be the first of Altadena’s county parks to reopen following the devastating wildfire that caused 17 deaths and destroyed or damaged over 10,000 structures. It will be a “super park” with these additional new services:

-After Altadena’s senior center burned in the fire, the parks department will work with the LA County Department of Aging and Disabilities to create a satellite senior center at Loma Alta.

-In another partnership with the county health

department's Office for Advancement of Early Care and Education, parks officials will provide 100 afterschool slots for children ages 5 to 12, and in the summer the program will run all day. The OAECE will also provide the 25-slot Tiny Tots program for children ages 3 to 4. The Eaton Fire caused the loss of 2,802 early childhood education licensed spaces, 34 early childhood education licensed facilities and four facilities that were damaged. "Supporting families and children after the Eaton Fire with child care continues to be a priority for LA County Parks after the department ran its Care Camps," officials said.

-In collaboration with county Department of Economic Opportunity, parks officials will provide 25 Altadena youth with jobs

through the Youth@Work program.

-The Altadena Library District will host a satellite library at the park with an variety of programming for children, families and seniors.

-The Altadena Rotary Club is moving their concert series to Loma Alta Park. The club previously held its annual summer concert series at Farnsworth Park which was damaged extensively — especially the Davies Building, a structure on the National Register of Historic Places.

García-González also said that the community has the opportunity to play a key role in reopening the park by volunteering every Saturday in April to replant, clean and repaint the park.

Tree People and the Los Angeles Conservation Corps will help organize the effort.

"Instead of 'Earth Day' April will be 'Earth Month' to focus on the rejuvenation of Loma Alta Park, and rebuilding of the Altadena Community Garden," according to the Parks and Recreation Department.

Officials said Metabolic Studio will provide new, clean soil for the community garden following the removal of 6 inches of topsoil. Rotary Clubs from throughout Southern California have pledged $10,000 for volunteer meals during the Saturday repair and rehabilitation work in April.

The park's rebirth will also feature local artists and muralists. The county has commissioned works by Victor Ving and Eric Junker to "commemorate the resilience of Altadena and its people," officials said.

“Reopening by May 10 is ambitious, but to effectively serve the community in its time of need, LA County Parks and its partners realize the need to be bold”, García-González said.

“Local leaders, philanthropic and community partners, and LA County Parks are inspired by the residents of the greater Altadena area to do more and go big. Reopening Loma Alta Park can help strengthen the community as it also seeks to rebuild."

The park is located at 3330 N. Lincoln Ave. The senior center lost in the Eaton Fire was located at 560 E. Mariposa St.
