Arcadia’s Matt Denny’s Ale House Hosts Largest Childhood Cancer Fundraiser to Date

- Students and - Approximately $50,000 Raised in One night with the help of 130 Parents Wear People who Shaved their Heads in Solidarity with Children with Cancer Pink to Support Those Who Received Pink Slips Concerned students and parents protested (in pink) the pink slips at Arcadia schools to express their concern over the state budget crisis and its effect on AUSD local schools. Each school in Arcadia Unified School District will feel the effects of the budget crisis as 105 teachers and staff received notification that their positions may be cut for in the 2011-2012 school year. Parents and students participated in “Wear Pink Day” on March 15, by passing out flyers and holding signs on the sidewalks during drop off and pickup at area middle and elementary schools. The goal is to educate more parents and community members about the crisis Arcadia schools face as a direct result of budget cuts and how parents can show their support of Arcadia schools by donating to the Arcadia Educational Foundation (AEF). San Gabriel City Shuts down Maternity Home On March 8, 2011, the Neighborhood Improvement Services Division (NIS), the Building Division, and the San Gabriel Police Department investigated an illegal maternity house operating in five (5) attached townhouse units in south San Gabriel. Beacon Media spoke with NIS Officer Jorge Arellano Friday afternoon who said this is the second time this particular building owner has been cited. His office was alerted to the problem by a concerned citizen. According to NIS Officer Jorge Arellano, young women travel from areas such as Taiwan on “vacation” visas and are illegally housed in situations like this while they go through pregnancy and birth.
