Illusion of Safety: 3 Hidden Risks RONALD S. PHILLIPS Author of two books, teacher & trusted columnist

Y

ou might think you’re investing or saving into low risk, or even risk-free, investments but you may be taking on some hidden dangers. Certificates of deposit (CDs), Treasury bills and bonds, and guaranteed fixed annuities all have some covert threats. Of course, with low-risk instruments you get many benefits. It could be low volatility or no volatility, guaranteed by the U.S. government or insurance, and possibly even a guaranteed return or no downside price risk. These are pretty darned impressive features. But everything has a price…

OPPORTUNITY COST The #1 hidden risk is “opportunity cost.” What did you miss out on? Did you forego stock investments for low return fixed investments? Over one month or one year a fixed return can look pretty great. Especially now that interest rates are higher than the recent past. But over a decade or two you can really see the lost opportunity add up. For example, according to Blackrock, the last decade U.S. stocks performed at 11.8% per year. Investment-grade bonds were at just 1.7%, barely beating cash returns. To be fair, a stock investor gets

on a figurative rollercoaster ride. The market zips up fast, and then drops on fickle news, then might do nothing significant for 5 months. It really is a crapshoot. In the short term. The long-term growth of stocks and other risk assets like real estate (and even gold) is simply stellar. Historically, they’re the best assets to own for high total returns.

INFLATION RISK Talk about a whopper in the last few years! Money printing, and inflation, was up around 40% the last two or three years. Interest from CDs, Treasury bills or bonds, and similar investments didn’t match inflation. There was a guaranteed loss of purchasing power in most cases. We don’t receive a single bill for this loss, or get a statement showing this dismal result, but we all know it’s very real. Go to the store, pay your property tax, and various insurances…you get the picture. Risk #2 is very real. REALITY OF BANK LENDING There’s a Chinese curse that goes something like “May you live in interesting times.” For banking, we’ve certainly had some interesting years, from the ’08 crash to the recent bank failures this year. Part of the problem (part!) of the 2008 financial crisis was the too-creative use of finance. Lenders threw money at bad risk, got the upfront profits, and sold the loans. Then the loans were packaged together, the ratings agencies waved a magic “good credit” wand and, voila, risk and responsibility was pushed further away. Now, you do realize that money you put in the bank was part of that process, right? And here you thought it was safe and secure in a low-yield checking account. That is the miracle (or curse) of banking. From shucking-off risk to fractional-reserve banking there are many ways modern banking is full of unreasonable risk. For a primer on how fractional-reserve banking works just remember George, from It’s A Wonderful Life, explaining that a little bit of money was deposited and then spread around to many loans. One dollar turns into ten. Again, it sounds miraculous, doesn’t it? But it comes with risk side effects, to be sure. If you have your money in an insurance contract, they’re doing similar things as well and probably keeping more investment returns in exchange for giving you a guarantee. Some one, somewhere, seems to always be taking a risk behind the scenes. A GAME PLAN This little article is not meant to discourage you from these solid, safe assets but just to let you know things are

more complex. Right now, I’m encouraging clients and investors to buy CDs and fixed annuities. Rates are finally high enough and it might be wise to “ladder” these assets to help ensure higher interest rates in your pocket (laddering is staggering fixed maturities out several years). But don’t forget that you might be better off with some risk assets along with the safety.

rom a dear friend on the internet: So now cocaine is legal in Oregon, but straws aren’t. That must be frustrating. Still trying to get my head around the fact that ‘Take Out’ can mean food, dating, or murder. Being popular on Facebook is like sitting at the ‘cool table’ in the cafeteria of a mental hospital. You know you’re over 50 when you have ‘upstairs ibuprofen’ and ‘downstairs ibuprofen’. How did doctors come to the conclusion that exercise prolongs life, when… the rabbit is always jumping but only lives for around two years, and… the

turtle that doesn’t exercise at all lives over 200 years. I too was once a male trapped in a female body…but then my mother gave birth. If only vegetables smelled as good as bacon. The biggest joke on mankind is that computers have begun asking humans to prove they aren’t a robot. When a kid says “Daddy, I want mommy” that’s the kid version of “I’d like to speak to your supervisor”. It’s weird being the same age as old people. Just once, I want a username and password prompt to respond CLOSE ENOUGH. If Adam and Eve were Cajuns they would have eaten the snake instead of the apple and saved us all a lot of trouble. We celebrated last night with a couple of adult beverages …… Metamucil and Ensure. You know you are getting old when friends with benefits means knowing someone who can drive at night. Weight loss goal: To be able to clip my toenails and breathe at the same time. Some of my friends exercise every day. Meanwhile I am watching a show I don’t like because the remote fell on the floor. Now that Covid has everyone washing their hands correctly… next week…Turn Signals. Someone said, “Nothing rhymes with orange.” I said, “No, it doesn’t.” The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The realist adjusts his sails. There’s a fine line between a numerator and a denominator. Only a fraction of people will find this funny. Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are. I have many hidden talents. I just wish I could remember where I hid them. My idea of a Super Bowl is a toilet that cleans itself. Exercise helps you with decision-making. It’s true. I went for a run this morning and decided I’m never going again. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!! Yep, I said it. There would be no

Christmas without Him. You can add or subtract all you want to Christmas. He was a Jew; a rabbi even. He ruffled many a feather and told everyone what the Creator wanted and expected of us. If we would just follow two simply understood rules, we could enjoy heaven with Him for eternity. It was too hard for many people. Especially people from his birth home in Nazareth, who were ready to kill Him because he preached that He was the Messiah and that from this point on everyone should follow Him. Oh, the two rules? The first, Love the Father (His) completely and the second, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Pretty simple, but too complicated for too many people. It upended too many centuries of religious history. Many would have lost prestige and their jobs. So, He had to be dispatched. But first He had to be born. That is why we call it the Christmas season. It's tradition really. Looking back at the accounts of the census being taken, etc. there is ample evidence that Jesus was probably born in April or in the springtime because that's when the census was taken traditionally. But, for some reason December 25th was used as His birth date. So, every time I hear or see the words the Holiday Season or Happy Holidays I want to scream out to the heavens and say it's the Christmas Season! By not saying those words to be simplistic at best and degrading at worst, He once again gets shunned like He was in His own hometown. I do know that the Christmas Season is not fun for much of our world. Some because they are alone, some that are impoverished and sttill others because they choose not to believe. So, to those who do not believe. To those that have to tag along with the "reason for the season" He would ask you to follow Him. Remember, "Love

the Father with your whole being" and "Love your neighbor as yourself!" Nothing could be easier. Oh, and be generous to those who need it. Panhandlers can be risky. Try to find a good, wholesome place to give your time, money and energy (there are so many of them that are on the up and up). Not just now, mind you, but throughout the year. Tell them Jesus Christ sent you. While I'm on the subject remember I have the key to a simple way to get in His favor. It's called The Chaplet of Divine Mercy. As Jesus told a young, unassuming nun in Poland Maria Faustina Kowalska, right at the start of WWII as her country was being annexed by Hitler's henchmen robots that she would be responsible for getting His Divine Mercy Chaplet out to the world. If she did and she did, His words now, "Through the chaplet...... if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy." We could ask for anything and receive it...... "through the chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will." I have the Divine Mercy Chaplet pamphlet and it is free. Just send me at Beacon Publishing P.O.Box 7215, Pueblo West, CO 81007-0215 or email me at SRbeacon@gmail.com. Just give me your name and address. Once I send out the pamphlet, I will delete your information just like I have all the others who have sent for the free pamphlet throughout the last couple years. No Gimmicks! Godspeed to you and yours and Merry Christmas and hope your New Year is filled with much peace and happiness.

‘LIGHT FOR THE JOURNEY’

JAN MCLAUGHLIN

Columnist & founder of an international prison ministry

"ON WHOM HIS FAVOR RESTS?"

"A

nd there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests” (Luke 2:8-14 NIV). These precious verses from the book of Luke capture my imagination as I consider what the shepherds must have thought when their lives were forever disrupted on that calm evening as they tended their sheep. Imagine the fear they experienced and their

reaction. Imagine! A quiet night on a hillside with sheep around you, tiny glimmers of light from a small town in the distance. An angel appears and the glory of the Lord lights up the night. Imagine! They were, as the Bible records, terrified. As I ponder the imagery and beauty of this moment in history, one word in the Biblical account particularly grabs my attention. Favor. Not the single word alone but its context. “. . . and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.” Wait a minute. Isn’t God’s peace supposed to be to all men on earth? These words jump off the page, penetrate my heart and probe the question. Who are these, on whom His favor rests? What is His Favor? What is rest? Am I one of those on whom His favor rests? Are you? Questions explode in my mind prompting more research. Favor, from a Biblical perspective means – God stepping into one's situation – to make a worthwhile difference! Favor is not a feeling and it's not something to earn! It's a gift, a blessing from the Lord! God’s favor is His grace which He gives to His children to do something that otherwise would be humanly impossible for us to do. For instance, it’s only by God’s undeserved favor can we experience eternal life and only by His Grace do we have the ability to live for Him. God’s favor, like His grace, cannot be earned, or purchased by us. Nothing we can do will earn or merit His favor. If God chooses to show favor, it does not make us exempt from the tribulation and trials of the world. That is not what His favor does. The greatest act of God’s favor is that of eternal life, by grace we have been saved. And it is only by His grace we are able to live for the Lord in this dark world. The word “favor” means to show kindness or to be gracious toward someone. Can you imagine any higher kindness than to be chosen as the mother of Jesus, the Son of God? Why was Mary highly favored and chosen by the Father for this incredible mission? Everything we read about Mary speaks of her humble obedience to God. “And Mary said, 'Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word'” (Luke 1:38 ESV). Blessed and highly favored means that God has His hands on us for His purposes! God’s list of obedient servants from Scripture is long and includes Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David and

many more. God had His hands on each of these for His purpose. “. . . and without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6 NIV). I observe the lives of church fathers, notables and even friends and know for certain, these people were chosen by God and His hands are upon them for His purposes. As I look back over 37 years of prison ministry, I remember clearly how God disrupted my life one night with a clear message. I was on my way to hell because I didn’t have a relationship with His Son. That night, my life was totally transformed, and I believe God’s hands were on me for His purposes. I cannot imagine anything more satisfying or fulfilling than living confident of these two things. First, the assurance of my salvation through Christ’s shed blood. Second, knowing I am walking in the works God prepared in advance for me. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph. 2:10 NLT). Has God disrupted your life? Another word the angel said to the shepherds provokes another question to investigate. The simple word - rest. How does God’s favor rest on someone? What does that mean? What is rest? Rest is peace, ease or

refreshment. We see another Hebrew word for rest, which can be understood as to abide or rest in. I believe that rest begins for a Christian when they cease striving, knowing they cannot earn salvation and totally and confidently put everything into God’s hands, knowing He will do the work needed in us, to accomplish His will. Philippians clearly states that God will complete the work He has begun in us since He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. God’s favor and His amazing grace are the same! We don’t deserve either one. May God’s favor rest upon you and give you peace during this Christmas season and throughout the coming year. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV). © 2023 Jan McLaughlin - All rights reserved. Jan can be contacted at 719275-6971 or by e-mail Jansmail@reagan. com. NYAD: A BIG DREAM BETTY JO TUCKER Pueblo award winning film critic

BECAUSE ANNETTE BENING ATTENDED SAN DIEGO Mesa College where I served as Dean of Humanities back in the 1980s, I asked her to return and conduct an acting workshop for our current drama students. Her enthusiasm for acting delighted everyone. “My goal is to become a very old woman playing all sorts of character parts,” she told the students. And now one of her most interesting characters is Diana Nyad, a swimmer who failed to complete a 110 mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida in 1978 This compelling movie focuses on Diana at age 60 when she decides to try this long dangerous swim again. Diana Nyad has a big dream. “She will fail!,” many doubters scream. But Nyad persists all the way with a team that’s more than okay.

NYAD the movie got to me. It’s a terrific film to see. Bening deserves more than one cheer. Jodie Foster as coach is dear. Undersea music works so well. Cinematography? It’s swell. This biopic awards should win. if not, my head might start to spin! Bening and Foster seem perfect in their roles as old friends here. They play them with gusto and heart. One of my surprises involves the way this biopic doesn’t flinch to show Diana Nyad’s negatives in her character. And Bening makes sure to demonstrate Diana’s un-

I must also mention Rhys Ifans who portrays Diana’s sympathetic boat man. How far will this character go to help Nyad achieve her big dream? Tucker’s rhyming treatment. This book is a fun resource for fans of both movies and poetry. It won Second Place in the E-book Poetry category at the prestigious 2019 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards. In the book’s Foreword film critic and author Phil Hall writes that Tucker has a flair for light comic poetry in the style of Ogden Nash. “This distinctive touch enhances her reviews, providing a delightful way to consider films,” he says. Tucker also explains how she got involved in mixing films and poetry. “I blame it on a famous director and to tap dancing,” she admits and then gives readers all the important details. She also includes comments received about her approach of combining film reviews and poetry. Below are three examples. Love the Poem-Review, Betty Jo! The bottomline is that Velma is home with the family that got her as an early Christmas gift. Home, safe an sound. Maybe I just want it to be a miracle because it is the Christmas season. After all, Christmas is all about miracles. The miracle of a virgin having a son in a cattle stable. The miracle of angels telling shepherds the Messiah had been born and a star directing Maji to the place of His birth; the miracle of King Herod trying to kill Him and failing. The miracle of Jesus, a man, living a perfect life, dying for our sins and raising from the dead, to defeat even death. The promise of the miracle of his eventual return when he will defeat everything ugly in the universe forever. Even Velma could never match that miracle.

"Preventing Falls," by Local Senior Expert "Help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up." Seeing these words can put a smile on our faces as we recall that iconic commercial that made these words an unforgettable catchphrase. Although humor is brought to our mind when thinking about these words, we also understand how devastating falls can be for persons of any age. As we know, the aging process brings consequences of falls that can be significantly more devastating than those in a younger person. Falls for elderly persons can have various dangers, impacting their physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. Some of these dangers associated with falling in the elderly can include things such as physical injury, reduced mobility, loss of independence, devastating psychological impact, increase in healthcare costs and healthcare needs, higher mortality rates, and complications that have longterm effects. Falls can result in injuries ranging from minor bruises and cuts to more serious consequences like fractures (particularly hip fractures), head injuries, and sprains. These injuries can lead to hospitalizations, surgeries, or long-term rehabilitation. After experiencing a fall, many individuals may become more cautious and fearful of falling again. This can lead to reduced physical activities and mobility. This decrease in mobility can further weaken muscles, reducing balance, and increasing the risk of future falls. Serious fall -related injuries can limit an individual’s ability to perform daily activities independently. Additionally, complications from fall related injuries such as pneumonia or blood clots, can arise during hospitalization or recoveries leading to further health issues with an ultimate decline in the person’s overall well-being. So how can we prevent falls? Here are some strategies and tips to help prevent falls and reduce the risk of not only falling, but also improving the outcome if a fall does in fact happen. Regular exercise and physical activity can improve strength, balance and flexibility thus reducing the risk of falls. Activities like walking, tai chi, and yoga can be very beneficial. Exercise has long been known for its overall benefits to an individual’s health and well-being by improving muscular strength and balance that will greatly minimize the risk of a potential fall. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D helps maintain bone health which can reduce the risk of fracture if the fall does occur. Home safety modification is an area that we would frequently overlook as a fall prevention technique. We become very comfortable with our physical

environment and may not recognize that items such as throw rugs, oxygen cords, wet surfaces, and clutter can be significant problems as it relates to a person’s risk of falling. Additionally, improving light availability and installing grab bars and non-slip mats in the bathroom can also be safety features that are inexpensive and hold great value in maintaining safety in the home. Also, using assistive devices like canes or walkers can provide stability and support while moving around in the home. Statistically speaking, more persons have serious falls in the bathroom while showering or bathing so it is a good idea whenever possible to perform these hygiene tasks when others are around in the event that a slip or fall may happen. Also, poor eyesight and improper fitting footwear can contribute to the risk of falling. Having regular visits with your healthcare provider can help monitor any health conditions that might increase a fall risk, such as low blood pressure or neurological issues. Some medications can cause dizziness or drowsiness, increasing the risk of falls. Proper medication reviews and discussion with the healthcare professional is good to manage medications that might put an individual at greater risk for falling. While visiting your healthcare professional they can conduct a fall risk assessment which can identify specific risks and develop a tailored prevention plan that would consider the individuals healthcare challenges, medications and overall physical status. In some cases where there is a high risk for falls, fall detection alarms or alert systems can quickly notify caregivers or emergency workers of a fall. By utilizing these panic buttons, a person can summons help much quickly and hopefully avoiding further fall complications from being on the floor for long periods of time without the appropriate medical assistance. It is important that we educate both ourselves and our caregivers about the risk of falls and preventative measures to establish an effective fall prevention plan. It is also important to know that individual circumstances very, and a personalized approach is often necessary. Consulting with the healthcare professional including physicians, physical therapists, and occupational therapist, can provide tailored strategies for fall prevention based on individual need and circumstances. Be safe and good health to all.

MORE THAN 71 MILLION AMERICANS will see a 3.2% in-

crease in their Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in 2024. On average, Social Security retirement benefits will increase by more than $50 per month starting in January. Federal benefit rates increase when the cost-of-living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI-W). The CPI-W rises when inflation increases, leading to a higher cost-of-living. This change means prices for goods and services, on average, are higher. The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) helps to offset these costs. We will mail COLA notices throughout the month of December to retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries, SSI recipients, and representative payees. INTRODUCTION OF BILL TO BLOCK BIDEN'S 1.6 MILLION ACRE COLORADO LAND GRAB CONGRESSWOMAN LAUREN BOEBERT INTRODUCED H.R. 6547,

legislation that prohibits the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from locking up 1.6 million acres of land in Colorado from responsible oil and gas production. Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (CO03) said, “Joe Biden and his agency minions are making a concerted effort to undermine our energy production, particularly in Colorado. As gas prices soar to unprecedented levels nationwide, inflation crushes working families, and our national debt skyrockets at an alarming pace, the time for effective solutions is now. Instead of championing an all-of-the-above energy production to stimulate the economy and lower energy prices, Joe Biden is hellbent on trying to eliminate the oil and gas industry, as evidenced by tyrannical actions like this concerning land grab.” Chelsie Miera, Executive Director of the West Slope Colorado Oil & Gas Association, said, “The hardworking women and men in Western Colorado's oil and natural gas industry take pride in producing reliable, affordable, and safe natural gas and oil for our neighbors, Americans, and allies. It is crucial to consider the taxes and revenues paid by our industry, which fund important rural fire protection districts, library districts, rural schools,

tourism projects, and much more. As a primary employer, creating 2 or 3 jobs in the economy for every job in our industry, we are thankful to contribute to a diversified economy for Western Colorado. Despite BLM's alternatives presenting a false choice, suggesting that either recreation or oil and gas are mutually exclusive on public lands, the Western Slope has shown that we can utilize our public lands with all multiple uses thriving together for the betterment of our communities.” Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources, Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-5) said, “As Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources, I am pleased to join my Colorado colleague Congresswoman Boebert in pushing back against the Biden administration’s overreach. Removing 1.6 million acres of land in Colorado from energy production will raise the cost of Americans’ energy bills. We must have an “all-of-the-above” energy approach to ensure effective and reliable energy production.” Garfield County Commissioner Tom Jankovskysaid, “Garfield County, CO is home to the Piceance Basin, which has the second largest natural gas reserves in the U.S. I appreciate Rep. Boebert’s attention to oil & gas drilling on federal lands. The natural gas reserves from our region are an important resource for our country and geopolitically.” Congressman Andy Ogles (TN-5) said, “The Biden Administration has been honest about its opposition to affordable energy and good-paying American jobs. Biden’s BLM has gone out of its way to punish the oil and gas industry, and we’ll all be paying the price unless we put a stop to it. I applaud Congresswoman Boebert’s leadership on this bill to block Biden’s latest land grab.” Background: Congresswoman Lauren Boebert introduced H.R. 6547 to prohibit the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from implementing a plan to end new oil leases on 1.6 million acres in Colorado. If the BLM’s proposal is finalized, the United States would lose access to vital energy resources while Americans are feeling the sting of increased gas and
