Dal Zotto Pucino Prosecco NV Region: King Valley, VIC Variety: Glera Notes: It’s fitting that Australia’s tastiest example of Prosecco comes from the first plantings of Glera, the traditional grape for Prosecco planted back in 1999 by Otto Dal Zotto. Nowadays, his son, Christian does the heavy lifting but is still making wines that stack up with the best of them from ‘back home’. Candied lemon, pears and white flowers open the show, and a creamy, generously fruit driven palate, creating the perfect summer sparkler. PE

Bisol Vaparetto Prosecco NV Region: Veneto, Italy Variety: Glera Notes: This is a wine that transports you, metaphorically as it's named after the steam powered water taxis that once powered through Venice’s canals and physically, away from sobriety as it's so easy to drink! This is a simple yet delicious example of one of the world's most recognisable wine styles. Full flavours of citrus, pears, and jasmine flowers, Glera’s natural acidity retains a lovely crisp line of acidity throughout making you reach for another glass!

Paul Louis Brut Blanc de Blancs NV Region: Loire Valley, France Variety: Chardonnay Notes: With a name like Paul Louis one would expect a regal Champagne house, and you would be forgiven that thinking this was Champagne when tasting it. Based in the Loire Valley, you’d be right 8 times out of 10 if you were to think this was Chenin Blanc but instead you have the noble Chardonnay jumping from the glass. Toasty rich notes of almond, slight hints of vanilla and a delicious lemon curd tang to wind things up. A great all-rounder, whether that be a post work drink or a dinner party with friends. PE

42o South Premier Cuvee NV Region: Coal River Valley, TAS Variety: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir Notes: The second sparkling from Tasmania in this year’s book, 42° South is a completely different beast. While drawing from some similar parallels, the 42° boasts a brighter nose of florals and citrus and trades the creamy palate for something more aperitif in style. Clean, zippy and direct with some lovely fresh apple character!

They also produce some of the best cool climate wines this fine country has to offer. Stefano Lubiana is one of the leading lights, and his sparklings are second to none. Daosa Natural Reserve NV Region: Adelaide Hills, SA Variety: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir Notes: When the source of your grapes is from a vineyard originally planted by a family member of the Bollinger Champagne house, you know you’re onto something! The Natural Reserve is Daosa’s newest family member. 85% vintage wine (in this case, 2016) and 15% ‘reserve’ wine. Pears, apples and baking spices dominate the nose, while the fine bead and driving acidity shape this up as being one of South Australia’s best!

Ayala Blanc de Blancs Vintage Region: Champagne, France Variety: Chardonnay Notes: We’re all suckers for a Blanc de Blancs here in the shop, and this release is one of Ayala’s finest yet. More on the mid-weight side of Apricot, chamomile and some slightly tropical fruits, rather than the traditional lemon pith and citrus style that we’re used to! The 6 years on lees build a creamy palate to go with the fine chalky texture that Chardonnay from Champagne always brings to the table! A great little celebratory bubbles. PE

Although being one of the big boys on the Champagne block, Bollinger have always been at the top of the tree with everything they release, and the Rosé is no exception. It’s always going to be good with 85% Grand and Premier Cru vineyards making up the base. Dried roses, white peaches, almond cream and some baking spice and pasty really sing from the glass.

With a base comprised of Shiraz, this is everything a sparkling red should be. whites FRESH, SILKY, TEXTURED, FRUITS, CREAMY, WOODY — WE’VE GOT THEM ALL COVERED The one thing we’ll bang on about until our dying breath is how great Riesling is! This year sees a fresh batch of Grigio’s challenge for the title of ‘Most Drunk White Wine’, attempting to swipe the title from Sauvignon Blanc. But as ever, we have a host of brilliant, local and imported drops, and we have made an emphatic attempt to squeeze all the value we can into this year’s book.

Heggies Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling 2017 Region: Eden Valley, SA Variety: Riesling Notes: Essentially the little sister to one of Australia’s most well known and loved brands, Pewsey Vale. Heggies Vineyard sits practically on the other side of the hill, offering another pretty face of Riesling from the Eden! Comparing the two, I would say that Heggies is more of a ballet dancer with its delicate and graceful approach, while Pewsey would be a fencer with its piercing acidity. Lemon and tangerine dominate the nose while a softer acidity takes hold on the palate! Brilliant summer drinking. PE

Dr. Loosen ‘Dr. L’ Riesling 2016 Region: Mosel, Germany Variety: Riesling Notes: Ask anyone who makes the best German Rieslings and you would be given three names consistently. Egon Muller, K.P Keller and Ernst Loosen. “Ernie” who heads up the family estate at Dr. Loosen is mostly known for producing slightly richer and sweeter wines, but the latest release of his dry “Dr. L” is off the charts! Essentially the little brother to Adelaide Hills' powerhouse, Shaw & Smith, The Other Wine Co. gives the team the ability to play around with grapes that don’t fit the S+S mould. With both feet firmly planted in the Gris camp, it's nice to see an example that does justice to the style! Marcel Deiss ‘Alsace’ Field Blend 2015 Region: Alsace, France Variety: Pinot Gris & the Dirty Dozen (Riesling, Gewurtz, Sylvaner, Pinot Noir + + +) Notes: Pinot Gris and Grigio are the same grape so it would only be fair to compare them. Think of Asterix and Obelix, Grigio taking the role of Asterix, lithe and athletic while Gris would be more like Obelix, weighty and obvious but with a sharp wit. Marcel Deiss is the king of the field blend and this comprises of thirteen different grape varieties, expressing what ‘Alsace’ should taste like. Peaches, white flowers and pineapple make you take notice, while the palate has an incredible fruity drive with an almost saline finish. Decadent stuff.

This is the ‘Altar wine’ produced by Stift Goettweig in Austria’s Kremstal, the home of Gruner! Gruner is one of the most well know exports out of Austria, only second to Arnold Schwarzenegger, but fortunately that’s where the comparison ends. Inama ‘Vin Soave’ Soave Classico 2017 Region: Veneto, Italy Variety: Garganega Notes: Soave is considered to be Italy’s most ‘important’ white wine. Made predominantly from Garganega, these two words together can be difficult to pronounce. Think Gar-Gan-Ega and Swah-Vey and you’ll sound like you’re straight from Venice! Soave is traditionally rounder and richer and Inama carries this with ease while retaining the line and focus that we all love. Guthrie ‘Mondo Project’ Sauvignon Blanc 2018 Region: Adelaide Hills, SA Variety: Sauvignon Blanc Notes: Of all the Sauvignon Blanc’s we tried in this year’s tasting, this was the one that stood up and made us take notice. Less of the green vegetal snow pea/asparagus tones and more heavy citrus flavours with gooseberry and a flintiness rarely seen with Savvy! Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier 2017 Region: Eden Valley, SA Variety: Viognier Notes: Ah Viognier, the grape we love to hate, and hate to love. It’s always so difficult to find a well-balanced drop that doesn’t have the texture of a BP oil spill. HOWEVER, the one producer who nails it every time is Yalumba, the grape's pioneer and champion here in Australia. Viognier has a natural oiliness, and the crew at Yalumba tame this texture and use it like salt and pepper to bring out the best in the grape, this alongside its natural fruit set of apricots, nectarines and a little toast and orange oil make for a luscious yet refined wine, perfect for a balmy afternoon. Yangarra Estate Blanc 2018 Region: McLaren Vale, SA Variety: Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussane, Picpoul and Bourblanc Notes: This is no ordinary white wine… Based on Chateauneuf du Pape, a region famous for robust reds and powerful blended whites with unusual grape varieties. Grenache Blanc, the white mutation of McLaren Vale's first love ‘Grenache’, holds court, adding layers of apple and white peaches, while the others, Roussane Clairette, Picpoul and Bourblanc add either a robust palate weight, or pristine linear acidity. reds VARIETY, VALUE, AND INDIVIDUALITY WERE THE GOALS THIS YEAR, ALONGSIDE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR: DRINKABILITY With a big tilt in wine styles over the last couple of years, we’ve attempted to wrangle some interesting drops together for this year’s red selection. Light and dry Rosés kick things off, followed by some lighter and crunchier alternate grape varieties. We’re hoping to introduce you to some of our new favourite Italian immigrants, Negroamaro, Sangiovese and Nero d’Avola, whose flavour and uniqueness have completely won us over. In typical South Australian fashion, we’ve snuck a couple of chunky, fuller-bodied reds into the mix. All this patriotic talk of local wines has got all our imported wines feeling left out, but there’s plenty of love for them in the pages that follow!

Roberto Voerzio Dolcetto d’Alba 2016 Region: Piedmont, Italy Variety: Dolcetto Notes: When your name translates directly from Italian into ‘little sweet one’ you know you’re in for a good time. Dolcetto is ‘slurpyness’ encapsulated, chock full of fruit and some rustic, slightly leathery tannins, this is what we would call a serious-fun wine. Brooding blueberry fruit, plums and a snippet of violets with Christmas spice. If there’s one Dolcetto to try, it’s the Dolcetto ace, Roberto Voerzio.

Viberti ‘Dolba’ Langhe Rosso 2014 Region: Piedmont, Italy Variety: Dolcetto Barbera Notes: Two Piedmontese staples like truffles and hazelnuts teaming up for something that should be done more often. Barbera’s fresh juicy nature and Dolcetto's dense opulence seem to go hand in hand! Pretty scents of wild strawberries and dark cherries lead the party while an inky liquorice and earthiness give a nice juxtaposition the way Barbera and Dolcetto should do. This is a personal favourite. PE

Bruno Rocca Langhe Nebbiolo 2016 Region: Piedmont, Italy Variety: Nebbiolo Notes: If you know wine, you might know Nebbiolo, but if you’re unfamiliar with Nebbiolo a good analogy would be to liken Neb to Connor McGregor, light on colour and as fierce as they come. Every now and then a vintage comes around that lets the winemakers tame the tannins that strangle your tongue and elevate the nose to another level. This possesses the staple Neb smells of tar and roses, but fennel, leather and fresh red cherries steal the show here. Quite possibly our wine of the year…

Murdoch Hill Vis a Vis Cabernet Franc 2018 Region: Adelaide Hills, SA Variety: Cabernet Franc Notes: Cabernet Franc has finally been released on parole after being convicted of being Cabernet Sauvignon’s dad, so we’re finally seeing it strutting its stuff solo rather than being blended away. Like many grapes, Franc can have many faces, but this takes the form of something lighter and more ethereal. The entire spectrum of light red berries jump out the glass, and the slight grassy or leafy profile, native to Franc, weaves its magic in the background. A scintillating first release. PE

Terre á Terre Cabernet Franc 2015 Region: Wratonbully, SA Variety: Cabernet Franc Notes: No, it’s not a glitch in the matrix, we are actually including TWO single variety Cabernet Francs in this year’s book. The two are polar opposite in terms of style, with Wrattonbully’s best example taking on more of a decidedly Bordelaise feel. Dark and dense with perfume and bramble leading the charge and a faint lick of cedar hanging in the background. The palate provides refreshing raspberry-like acidity with a rich core of minerality driving the palate. Superb stuff from the southeast!

Mitchell Wines Clare Valley Cabernet 2010 Region: Clare Valley, SA Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon Notes: The Mitchell’s have been a stalwart of the Clare Valley for the longest of times and one thing they still do that few others do is release their wines with age! The additional age of Clare Valley’s second most well know grape has melted the edges away to reveal a seamless palate loaded with dark berries, bramble, chocolate, cinnamon and the age-old Clare Valley Cabernet’s mint. The Clare might be a cut lunch and a water bottle away for us Adelaideans, but this brings some of the Clare to us! PE

Domaine Clarendon BDX 2016 Region: McLaren Vale, SA Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Notes: You could well be fooled thinking this was something straight out of an impressive Chateau in Bordeaux, from the packaging, right the way through to the classy tipple inside, Domaine Clarendon have knocked this out of the park! Cassis, dark chocolate, olive tapenade, cedar and polished mahogany make this look like the real deal, straight from the Baron’s cellar. Maybe it’s time we add Domaine Clarendon to the 1855 Classification…

Maxwell Silver Hammer Shiraz 2016 Region: McLaren Vale, SA Variety: Shiraz Notes: Every Little Book has a dad wine, and this year Maxwell have provided the goods! This is timeless McLaren Vale Shiraz. Powerful and plump with an abundance of fruit and smoky wood and vanilla beans and the ever present slightly salty finish that the Vale provides every year. Terrific stuff! Maybe if the Beatles had a couple of bottles of this before recording the song of the same name it wouldn’t have been so dark? PE

Langmeil Prime Cut Shiraz 2016 Region: Barossa Valley, SA Variety: Shiraz Notes: Put a blind line-up of Shiraz on the table, stick a Langmeil in there, watch the people flock to it. It’s a simple recipe, but it always works. The Langmeil style is just so friendly and approachable and the Prime Cut is just another feather in their cap! Oozing that supple Barossan texture and bountiful array of sweet berry fruit, liquorice and sweet spice, this is one for throwing back with your choice of prime cut!

Kalleske ‘Zeitgeist’ Shiraz 2018 Region: Barossa Valley, SA Variety: Shiraz Notes: This one isn’t your usual suspect. The words look familiar, but the content seems different? Kalleske? Tick. Barossa? Tick. Shiraz? Tick. What’s the catch I hear you say? Preservative free and no oak! This is as close as you’ll get to drinking freshly crushed alcoholic grape juice! As dark and vibrant as the label suggests with stewed fruits, milk chocolate and kirsch. As every vintage is different, each release is a Zeitgeist, a memory encapsulated in wine. PE

Chateau de Campuget ‘1753’ Syrah 2015 Region: Rhone Valley, France Variety: Syrah Notes: As unexpected as seeing a bullfight in France rather than Spain, seeing a single variety Syrah this far south in the Rhone Valley is somewhat of a rarity! Campuget sits on the cusp of the Languedoc, which is traditionally a place with a reputation somewhat akin to our very own Riverland… This kicks off with violets, cocoa, blueberries and a slightly minty character all backed up with the spice and smoke that you’d comfortably bet on a richly priced Northern Rhone to carry! A steal for the price.
