LOOK WHO’S TOURQUING Jason Bartsch A big presidential welcome to this edition of rex driver. I wish to thank the club for electing me as President for another year. I'll be doing my best to keep this club moving in the exciting direction it is. We have big plans for next year as well as maintaining our current mantra of being an active and social club.
Our Reynella Subaru Collingrove event was an outstanding success. A lot of newcomers came out to give it a go and a lot of PBs we broken. It was great to see what our club is capable of achieving in terms of organisation and running of such an event. I'd like to personally thank Matty Knighton and Damian Hirst for everything they did to make it possible. As well as the rest of the committee who helped out on the day.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who put their hands up to be a part of the committee at the recent AGM. There are some essential old faces whom we can't do without. As That's all from me for now, hope to see you all out well as some new faces which is great for new ideas at our family friendly Christmas party. Keep an eye and fresh energy. on the forum and Facebook for the event details. The motorsport club championship is getting towards the business end with only a few more point scoring rounds left. This years championship has been the most active and hotly contested in all the years I know of. It will surely end in a nail-biting finish.

Member Profile: Damian McGinn I would have been 11 or so. Standing trackside at the Adelaide Formula 1 track in 1990. Wow... those things are loud and fast... Immediately peaking my interest in everything motorsport. The year after I began my motorsport career in Superkarts, at only 12. It was such an experience. Learning vehicle control, being exposed to other drivers all around me, how to brake, how to take a corner and keep maximum speed and then being exposed to such tracks as Mallala, Phillip Island, Calder, Eastern Creek and Winton. I guess it was a bit of an advantage, because by the time I was 16 to get my learners permit, I already had quite the confidence in how to drive. It was just the finer details like indicating and parking. I had driving well and truly sorted. My first car was a 1976 Toyota Crown. I think it cost me $500 and it looked like it - I to this day almost deny owning it. Not long after that I owned a mini, now that car was fun to drive. Had the original old massive steering wheel. No synchros in the gearbox. I had that whole car given to me, and the engine was in parts.. That’s where I started getting interested in the mechanical aspect of cars also. I put the engine back together, from reading and learning from the limited dial-up internet I had my interest peaked further from that.
I had various cars from then, until I ended up buying a 1997 EL Falcon V8, and within 3 months of owning it. I had built an engine for it. I think the price tag came to around $16k back then, and it dyno’d around 260Kw. Which was decent for back then on pump gas. That didn’t last long, and the car actually caught fire. After that, I purchased my first WRX, a MY00 GC8 in white. Pretty clean and tidy. I remember fitting half the STI gear into it, tracked it once or twice with a 1:25 or so around Mallala. Which I think was actually the first time I had tracked a car there, and been on the track in about 7 years. Well that sparked my interest some more, and began my love for the boxer. I ended up trading that car in about 4 years ago for my current love, and believe one of our other members Wayne Brauer has it now. Now I own a MY06 Hawkeye that has had many hours of work put into it. It has my blood, sweat, and definitely plenty of tears... It’s a built S&J 2.5Ltr motor. Has all the good bits. Carillo Pistons and Rods. STI Crank, EJ257 that’s been closed decked. Tony Knight Heads, standard valve train and cams. And puts down a lazy 285Kw at the wheels, and much to peoples disbelief, behind a standard WRX 5 speed gearbox and drivetrain. I’ve upgraded the brakes to some 356mm floating rotors, with 6 piston calipers at the front, and 4 piston at the rear, so safe to say it stops very, very well . Adjustable Coilovers round out the suspension setup. It has done a 1:18.1 around Mallala on some old tyres, so I know a low 17 is there on some fresh Semi Slicks.
Wanting to spend more time on the track, and to get a cams license, it was only natural to join an affiliated club. So WRXSA it was. My first club event was the time attack back in 2015. 3 laps in… I destroyed the motor. I remember also being sick on the day, so that was the cherry on the cake. I think from then, I built such a relationship with some of the members, definitely Sean from S&J that spent so much time helping me sort out the engine, and car, and even returned calls on the weekend and after hours. I know a lot of workshops wouldn’t have that kind of commitment or back up their service like Sean has, so if he’s reading this - Thankyou mate. Where to from here? Well definitely more track days, I popped my hillclimb cherry this year, and that’s been a fun interesting experience. Something I’ve yet to master, and find that ‘groove’ that works with my setup. My big plan for the car, once funds become available, and I can convince the missus it’s a good idea… a STI 6 speed sequential gearbox. I can’t really see myself upgrading from this car. I’ve certainly sunk a ridiculous amount of money and effort into the car, but I wouldn’t change it once I get behind the wheel, and I hear that turbo spool up. I never was a car nut growing up, I did like a few growing up but they weren’t Subaru's, they were cars like Astons and Alpha’s etc. the usual flashy (and way too expensive) cars. I got my full licence in September 2014 and have had a few cars since then.
My first car was a black 2005 Suzuki Swift; it was a good car, fuel efficient, nimble and easy to park. Unfortunately in 2012 when I was still on my P’s, I hit a guard rail and wrote it off. I was going too quick along Greenhill and came around a sharp hairpin on Greenhill Rd, I misjudged the corner (and probably slid slightly) and hit the guardrail on the driver’s side. I was also unexperienced, assuming the car (and I) could handle the speed even if the road was slightly wet, an unintelligent decision since prior I did a slight fishtail when I came off the road slightly and touched the dirt. The car was later decided to be a write-off due to some minor damage to the back and some more extensive damage to the front left which included damage to the radiator and steering (the crash wasn’t bad enough for the air bags to trigger). Fortunately I was fine with only a few small scratches, I learnt a few lessons too; slow down in wet conditions and around sharp corners and that parents are more worried about your safety and that you’re alright and to call them anytime even if you crashed your car, and it was due to your own fault.
So with the insurance company transferring the money, I was looking for a new car. I was looking for something that I could use to tow if needed and something with a big boot to carry gear or to sleep in. I finally settled on a 2002 Outback, It had only about 140,000k’s and was in good condition. It was a great car, plenty of power (even without a Turbo) and had plenty of room to carry stuff. It was at that point I began to love Subaru’s. A few years later I decided it was time for an upgrade, the Outback was getting old and close to 200,000ks, which will start to get costly with repairs and the paint work was looking terrible due to me attempting to respray it. The body work had a few small dents and scratches and one largish dent thanks to my friend driving, coming around a corner that had moss on it and, yep, hitting a guard rail on the passenger side (What is it with these guard rails?).
I joined Subaru Scene SA and enjoyed the many cruises even though I wasn’t too happy taking my crappy looking Outback with all the nice WRXs and foresters there, I usually hid at the back of the cruise and didn’t park to close all the other cars. So time for an upgrade again, I wanted something that had a turbo and something that was a Subie so that put it down to a WRX. I looked at a few and settled on a Silver 2005 MY06 Impreza WRX from Reynella Subaru and sold the Outback. As soon as I test drove the WRX, it was love at first sight; I loved the power, the looks, and the sound of it. It was in immaculate condition and only had 137,000 Ks. It was already staged one tuned with an XA kit that had an ECUtek Race Rom, and twin exhaust with a nice tone to it, all tuned and installed by S&J. I later installed a DVD head unit and sub, rear view camera, dash cam and some LED strips under the front seat and dash ( I think that should rack up some JDM points!). I was now happy going on cruises with SSSA; later on I joined SOCSA and I attended more cruises since I didn’t have to hide my terrible looking car. A month or so I later I found out about WRXSA. Now I am now enjoying cruising with all three clubs (SSSA, SOCSA and WRXSA).
At a later point I hope to get it tuned to be more fuel efficient and do a few other mods like strut braces and upgrade the stock top mount radiator to a larger one. I hope to try out a few club events soon like hills climbs and some racing. I’m new to these events so I’m not looking for any placings, just to have some fun. Although I’ll be paying off the car for a few years, and it uses a lot of fuel, it’s defiantly worth it! Look forward to seeing and meeting you all at the next cruise or event. Justin
Member Profile: Sam Baker Hi Everyone, my name is Samantha and I’ve always had an interest in cars, I’d play Gran Turismo and Need for Speed for hours at a time, but it really began when I first saw a picture of an R34 GTR and watched Gone in 60 Seconds and of course Fast and the Furious! Going to Autosalon in 2003 for the first time definitely cemented my love of all car types, I knew I wanted something that would turn heads one day too. I’ve had a few different cars over the years but only one other than Lola that was extra special, don’t laugh… I was 18 when I bought it but it was a bright red 1994 Nissan Pulsar. I spent more money on doing it up over the years than what I originally paid for it. Think giant body kit (front and rear bar and side skirts), rims, x2 12” sub’s in the boot and decent sound system to match and of course an exhaust. That car had loads of personality, it didn’t go fast by any means but I loved it. It was different to anything else out there and that's what made it special, the day I traded it in for a family car when my first son was on his way I cried at the dealership, maybe blame pregnancy hormones but I was genuinely sad to see it go. I never thought I’d own another car like it until now. My previous car to this was a Nissan Pathfinder, great for family stuff, but slow and boring, I’d take any chance I got to take my husbands R34 out for a spin just for that adrenaline rush. When discussing car options with friends I was sent a link to the Liberty GT, I wanted a sports wagon and this was perfect. So without even seeing the car or test driving it I put a deposit on the car, flew to Sydney with my husband and drove it back to Adelaide.
I joined WRXSA as my family and I love adventures, doing car type things and generally meeting new people. So my affectionately named Lola is a 2013 Liberty GT Premium (BR9). We have been camping a few times and attempted our first WRXSA cruise that was cut short by our youngest being ill throughout the backseat (thank goodness for leather seats!). Mostly its just trips to school and soccer games on the weekends, she is my daily, my husbands car lives in the garage (mostly because it always needs fixing!). I’d love a 2017 WRX STI (who wouldn’t!) or to be super ridiculous an R34 GTR M Spec NUR… but that's for when my kids are a lot older and I don’t have a mortgage to pay!!!

Subinats 2017 was amazing event and so many awesome Subaru's everywhere! All our members did the club proud: Brenton Bailey was our fastest member, cracking the 40s with a time of 1.49.7. Jordan Rohrlach did very well for his first trip to Philip Island, clocking an impressive 1.52.3. Club president Jason Bartsch 1.54.0 may have been a little distracted, not getting a PB, but still finished the day with a win on one knee! Nigel McGaffin was the fastest of the McGaffins with a time of 1.56.77. Gordon Christie took his Volvo out in the Saturday session and achieved a very impressive time of 1.58.85. Jacob Richards just missed out on a sub-two minute time with 2.00.89. Tania Langcake ran out of time for the flat two she was chasing but achieved a PB of 2.01.75. Colin McGaffin and his EVO joined Gordan in the Saturday session achieving a time of 2.05.64. Jarrad McGaffin unfortunately had turbo issues but did set a time of 2.12.33 before they struck. Dan Day from S&J achieved the fastest lap for the weekend in the Saturday session with a time of 1.40.99. However as he did not compete on Sunday the time didn’t count to SubiNats. Other SA drivers were Phillip Bunker and Martin Donnon both 2mins flat and Kurt Wilson with his show car 25BB, 1.58.68

As far as weekends go this is one of my most memorable yet. My proposal to Zoe was months in the planning with only a select few in on the secret. I'm not sure how I managed to concentrate for a whole day of racing knowing what I was planning. I couldn't think of a better setting for the big question. A world class race track after a full days racing with some of our closest friends. Zoe and I made the trip to Philip Island for the first time back in 2014. This was where I started to fall in love with her. I realised her passion for cars and racing was genuine and knew we would share this interest for years to come. Big thank you to Ben for making the beautiful one of a kind ring. Brendan for being my secret messenger to Ben. Also a special thanks to Gordon for capturing the moment on camera. Jason Bartsch

Collingrove Hillclimb continues to be very popular among WRXSA club members and a handful decided to see how they stacked up against the best in the State at the 2017 SA State Hillclimb Championship (held on the 9-10th September). Three club members walked away with trophies, and two made it into the Top 10 shootout at the end! 2nd Place Rally Cars 4WD Michael Arnold with a fastest time of 34.21. 1st Place Road Reg 4WD over 4001cc Damien Hirst with a fastest time of 34.24. 2nd Place Fastest Female Tania Langcake with a fastest time of 36.73. Damien & Michael’s results saw them advance to the Top 10 shootout were their shootout time is compared to their fastest time for the weekend. This allows the various classes to compete against each other. Michael got closest to his PB giving him 5th place outright, and Damien finished 8th outright! Well done everyone, you are doing WRXSA proud!

It was great to see so many people with a common interest in Subaru's finest enjoying themselves all in one place. Making an event such as this run so smoothly takes much effort from a great group. Damien's vision, planning and successful schmoozing of sponsors really brought everyone together - but he's too modest to say anything, so I'll do it for him. And what a job Andrew our Clerk of Course did on executing the day so very well. His professionalism, experience and skills just kept everything humming along so well. Military precision doesn't begin to cover it. So many smiles were solely due to you two guys. Well done men.
Speaking of retail, Jess and Daniel had us covered for Merch for the day and did a great job of it. And when talking of great jobs, how was Jacob not only picking up and delivering the BBQ and eskies, running his own car for himself and his sister Sarah, but also helping Alana run her first time. Top effort.
The power couple, our Pres and Sechatary Jason and Zoe did a great job supporting everyone. It's hard doing the PA duties but Jase did a great job of announcing the winners, and Zoe handled everyone's paperwork so calmly and was the glue that filled in the gaps during the day on a million other things. Thanks guys.
There were many others also - Mathew had those playing at home covered on the social media side, Nigel has been paying the bills and Eddy had us Big ups to Tania for doing all the shopping and making covered in the tow truck (Which I am so grateful we sure we were well catered for. The food was so good. didn't need). Jordan printed up a storm in quick Also to Gary and Gareth for applying the heat on the fashion to get our membership cards to us on the BBQ and cooking up a storm at both brekky and day! This is no mean feat, trust me. Mark kept us all lunch, along with the great team from Reynella keen, all day, with his commentary prowess and Subaru who not only supported the event with cash endless Collingrove knowledge - it was great to have and lunch but by teasing us all with the gorgeous new you on board Mark! WRX STi. Thanks guys, your support is very much appreciated. Mark caught everyone's attention with the SA Motorsport Tyres display and transporter. Thanks for your support of the club Mark, we all appreciate it. And want your truck. Bad.

The Bend Motorsport Park
Excitement is continuing to build as we get even closer to the opening of The Bend Motorsport Park. SA Time Attack have locked in a date of April 29th and bookings have already been taken for the first Hyperdrive Track Day on the 7th of May. Supercars and Shannons Nationals events have also been confirmed for 2018. While you can’t currently make bookings, you can register there interest to stay at the 4 star Pit Lane Hotel, the new Rydges Hotel located in the main pit building. With the majority of rooms overlooking the tack you can bet the prices will be eye watering, especially when big events are on! The viewing platforms at the top of the pit building should hopefully be a lot more accessible and offer a spectacular panoramic view of the entire racing circuit, unlike anything else in the country.
With 4 main circuit configurations there are lots or new records up for grabs!
Cars 3 Drive in Social Night Photos by Damien Hirst A round of applause please for Damien Hirst who was the driving force behind the Cars 3 Dive in social night, the event was a smashing success, especially for all the families that attended. As we have come to expect from Pixar, the movie delivered high quality mix of kids entertainment that also includes enough mature story elements to get adults invested as well. On top of this the free pre-movie entertainment provided by Mainline was a great surprise, and hit with the kids! Face painting, balloon animals and a petting zoo kept them busy while we waited for darkness to fall and the movie to start. A great night was had by all! Seth Coultas

Round 12 is the Old Willunga Hillclimb, on December 10th and it's shaping up to be another fantastic event.
Going into last years Willunga event you may remember the close results between Damien Hirst and Jacob Richards. The final Grand Champion would be determined by the results of the Willunga event. This year the exciting battle is up for Runner up Grand Champion. The Challenge is set for Jason Sears (154) Adam Hobbs (151) and Jacob Richards (145). All 3 contenders are on the start list and with just 9 points separating them, it's going to be an exciting run to the finish line. Celebrating over 15 years of Rex Driver! Mallala Debutante: Karen Kutsche Beep, Beep, Beep. That was the alarm going off early on the Saturday morning of Mallala in June. We had decided that I would be driving this time at Mallala. Keeping in mind that I had never driven the car in anger in the hills or on roads I’m not familiar with, I was feeling apprehensive all week.. Despite the threat of rain and some pretty shite weather coming there was no excuse to pike out. This was my chance to get to know the car and my capabilities. I still wasn’t sure whether I would pike out at he last minute and let Frank have today’s session at Mallala. I noticed some other chicks were driving today so it made the chance to have a go a bit easier, despite knowing the guys might be waiting to make comments on woman's driving etc. Remembering that Frank had spun twice before at the notorious Corner 1, I couldn’t be any worse, could I?
the car around, first of all because the track was still a bit wet and I was still a bit worried. It was quite nerve racking to have experienced drivers in my group pass me so often. Then the “last lap” board was already out and it was time to come in. I hadn’t spun the car around, partly from lack of trying too hard; and it was better than sitting in the cold wind in the stands videoing. Watch out session 2 this is going to be fun.
Session 2 and the track had dried out and it made a hell of a difference as I wasn’t passed so often as I got my confidence up. Second to last lap and the rain started, bugger. Over lunch the rain got even heavier, damn. Session 3 and the track was pretty wet, it seemed that everyone was taking it easier, but there were still a few spinners around. I didn’t go out in session 4 because of the wet track, as I had had enough of wet tracks for one day. One thing that I did notice was that with each lap the confidence grew and I can’t wait until next time to learn more about my ability and the cars, if I can wrestle the keys from Franks hand.
It was obvious from the start that this was not going I encourage other chicks to have a go and get more to be a drive in the park, so to speak. The track was involved with some of the clubs activities, you learn in still quite moist, was this why Frank gave up the keys? a safe environment and you can have fun as well!
