ou can see the fastest land animal in the world right here in Arizona at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium & Safari Park.

These majestic felines have evolved solely for the chase, and it’s hard to appreciate their grace and beauty without seeing them in real life.

Cheetahs are built for speed and are capable of accelerating up to 65 mph in just a few seconds! Starting from a standstill, a cheetah can do a 100-meter sprint in under 6 seconds!

But it can’t maintain that speed for long—thus, the cheetah must trip up and subdue its prey quickly. Although it will hunt birds and hares, it expecially likes to bring down hoofed animals.

Unlike most other cats, cheetahs can only partially retract their claws, which helps with traction. Given their slender bodies, cheetahs are less able to defend themselves from large predators like hyenas and lions. Such competition combined with a high cub mortality rate of about 60 percent, a natural “bottleneck” that has severely limited genetic variation among the entire population and conflict with humans has made the species vulnerable to extinction. Its former range extended across much of Africa

and Asia. Today it is restricted to shrinking and increasingly isolated dry grassland and savanna habitats in Africa and is nearly gone from Asia.

Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park is committed to working with fellow accredited zoos from the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) and other professional associations to promote the preservation of cheetahs living in human care and the wild through financial contributions and public education.

The expanded Safari Park offers shaded viewing locations that provide guests with wonderful views of some of Africa’s most recognizable species. An all-new African lion habitat and a state-of-the-art rhino facility allows visitors to come face-to-face with three white rhinos. Giant ‘Extinct’ Tortoise Dramatically Reappears!

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, Ecuador—These Pacific islands are famous for their wildlife, especially the giant Galapagos tortoises.

When Charles Darwin first visited the islands in 1835, biologists believe there were around 15 different species of Galapagos tortoise. Some species of these slow-moving, plant-eating reptiles can live more than 150 years. One in captivity lived at least 170 years. The largest of them can grow to 5 feet long and weigh up to 550 pounds!

Believe it or not, sailors in these seas used to collect Galapagos tortoises for meat and oil, causing the population of tortoises to plummet from more than a quarter million around the 16th century to just 3,000 by the 1970s. Just 10 species were thought to remain after Lonesome George, the last of his species, died in captivity of old age in 2012.

The largest island of the Galapagos is Isabela, which sort of cradles the island of Fernandina just west of it. The Fernandina tortoise (Chelonoidis phantasticus) lived there, but the last one found was a male in 1906, and scientists either killed it or discovered its remains. CONSEQUENTLY, the species was considered extinct. On a couple of occasions, bite marks on prickly pear cactus on

Fernandina were discovered, along with tortoise SCAT (droppings).

So Animal Planet paid for an expedition on Fernandina for its show “Extinct or Alive.” The trekking was GRUELING, especially up around Host Forrest Galan te with his big its volcano. discovery with Anim al Planet.

Amazingly, the show’s host made the find of his lifetime—a very old female Fernandina tortoise hiding beneath some brush!

Host Forrest Galante announced the discovery in a Feb. 20 tweet. In a statement, he says, “As a biologist and someone who has dedicated my life to the pursuit of animals believed extinct, this is by far my greatest scientific accomplishment and proudest moment.”

The 100-year-old tortoise was collected and taken to the breeding center on Santa Cruz Island.

Could Great Whites Help Fight Cancer?

Scary teeth. Huge size. Top predator. That’s what most people think of when they think of the great white shark. However, there is a newly discovered aspect to these notorious creatures that should be added to that list: their DNA. Scientists have mapped great white sharks’ DNA and found that there are MUTATIONS which protect them against cancer and other illnesses. The scientists hope that this information may be translated so it can help humans.

Mahmood Shivji, the co-leader of the study, told the BBC that genome instability is important in many diseases that affect humans, such as some forms of cancer. The great white shark has developed a strategy to repair its own DNA and maintain the stability of its genomes. Great white shark DNA is one-and-a-half times bigger than human DNA, which means that there are things that their DNA can do that human DNA cannot yet do.

Sharks have been swimming in the seas for at least 16 million years and have life spans of approximately 70 years. This means they are confronted with

aging issues just like humans and that they have had time to evolve in their habitat.

Scientists still have a lot of research to do and they have not yet determined whether they can apply what they’ve learned about the sharks to people. However, the researchers are hopeful that the information will provide clues on cancer treatment, wound-healing and blood-clotting.

The research was done by scientists at the Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Research Centre at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. Great white sharks are the largest predatory fish in the world and have been known to grow to more than 20 feet in length and up to 5,000 pounds! Their powerful tails can help them reach speeds of up to 15 miles per hour in the water.

These features, combined with their rows of triangular teeth, have given them a fearsome reputation. Here’s hoping that scientists can find some helpful information through these amazing creatures of the sea.

North Pole Takes a Stroll What do you think of when you hear about the North Pole? For most of us, images of Santa Claus, reindeer and the greatest toy workshop ever all spring to mind.

There is actually a lot more to the term than most of us realize. True north, or the geographic north pole, is the northern end of the AXIS on which Earth turns and the rumored home of Santa and his elves. The magnetic north pole is different than true north—and this is the pole that’s been making headlines lately.

Magnetic north is what your compass locates and it’s defined as the point at which magnetic field lines point vertically downwards. Magnetic north has always been on the move, so scientists and experts created the World Magnetic Model. This model is the mathematical system that establishes the basis for modern navigation on everything

Every five years, scientists and experts produce an update for the World Magnetic Model. The last routine update was done in 2015. In recent years, magnetic north has picked up its pace of change. The changes have happened so quickly that scientists released an emergency update of the model in February.

So why is magnetic north changing so rapidly? Scientists know that magnetic north is affected by the surges and flows in the swirl of liquid iron in Earth’s core, some 1,800 miles beneath our planet’s surface.

However, scientists have theories about why the shift has sped up in recent years but haven’t determined the specific reason.

While the World Magnetic Model affects many mapping systems, most of us won’t notice much of a difference. Rocks provide a geologic map of the movements of the magnetic poles and suggest that there have previously been significant changes to magnetic north. One thing experts know for sure: the only thing predictable about magnetic north is how unpredictable it can be.

Karate Teaches Discipline & Respect

by Reporter Savannah Slaugh, Porter Elementary Do your parents say you need to improve your communication, discipline, honesty, respect, belief or self-esteem? Then listen to them. If you go to Victory Martial Arts in Mesa, you can improve a lot. You can even earn your black belt. Victory can help you with discipline, honesty and respect. You can learn cool new tricks, you learn to respect others and yourself, and there is a class for everyone of every age.

My favorite trick to do is the reverse roundhouse/wheel kick.

It’s hard to explain how you do it, that’s why I like it. You can also learn the other kicks like the axe, crescent, butterfly, calf, flying, scissor, vertical and showtime. My instructors will only teach you these kicks if you are in Leadership, a class that kids and adults take when they are invited. To be invited to Leadership, you need to show your best in every class you take.

the person know you are listening. If you don’t say that, they would think you are not listening, which would get you in trouble. Trouble is a bad thing. You should never cross your arms while an instructor is talking. They would think you believe you’re better than them and are challenging them.

There is a class for everyone at any age. Toddlers can take the Tigers class. You learn awesome nunchuck moves. If you are a kid, you take Action class.

From Action, you could earn the privilege of going to leadership. Leadership is when you use a special weapon to make a form and show it off in testing.

Black belt class is for purple belts and above. You would learn a form you need to memorize for testing.

For people 13 and older, there are three classes—adult class, Krav Maga (a hard-core class for adults who want a challenge) or kickboxing, an exercise class. Kickboxing is a medium exercise class, while Krav Maga is a hard class. The last class is Competition, and you need permission from one of the instructors. My favorite class is Leadership because you get to perform a cool form with an awesome weapon.

Since you can learn cool tricks, get help with respect to others, and there is a class for everyone, you can see why I am impressed with Victory Martial Arts. I want to be strong and know that I can defend myself. I am currently a brown belt.

News Stories Written by Kids— for Kids Teen Books Are Entertaining Reads

by Reporter Meredith Schlecht Apache Elementary Two Young Adult books by Kasie West, “By Your Side” and “Lucky in Love,” entertained me. In “By Your Side” the main character, Autumn, becomes stuck in a library for three days. Then she realizes Dax, “the trouble maker,” is stuck in the library, too. They learn secrets about each other that no one else knows. All of Autumn’s friends had gone to camp and thought Autumn had come with them, also. Instead, Autumn has a couple days to think about her life, and she becomes closer to Dax. In my opinion, this book was amazing. I really, really hope she writes a sequel. This book taught me that just because someone heard something (a rumor), it doesn’t mean it’s true.

So, don’t assume. I loved this book.

In West’s other book, “Lucky in Love,” the main character’s life changes when she wins $50,000,000! Having money doesn’t magically make her life better, in fact, it made things worse for her. I think that the overall message of the book is to not show off, but to be grateful for things in life. I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend this book to kids in sixth grade and older.

Einstein Known for Science Legacy

Albert Einstein is known for his work and influence on the philosophy of science. Einstein is best known to the general public for his mass–energy equivalence formula E=mc2, which has been dubbed “the world’s most famous equation.”

According to nobelprize.org, Einstein was born at Ulm, in Wurttemberg, Germany, on March 14, 1879. According to Wikipedia, Einstein had an IQ of 160. A perfect score is 162 on the Mensa Quizzes.

Einstein was married to Mileva Maric from 1903 until 1919. He was then married to Elsa from 1919 through 1936. He had two sons and a daughter.

Einstein invented and discovered many things. As a physicist, he discovered the Theory of Relativity and the equation E=mc2.

According to nobelprize.org, Einstein received honorary doctorate degrees in science, medicine and philosophy from many European and American universities. During the 1920s, Einstein lectured in Europe, America and the Far East. He was awarded fellowships or memberships in all the leading scientific academies throughout the world.

Einstein died on April 18, 1955, in Princeton, New Jersey at the age of 76.

1Getting Started

Young Reporters choose the stories that they cover, which means your first job is to come up with a story idea. A good writer keeps his or her readers in mind. So ask yourself, will Bear readers be interested in this story?

As a reporter, you are the eyes and ears of the newspaper. You can cover news that’s happening around you—at school, on your sports team or club, or in your community. Some of your best stories will come from things that really interest you.

When Being Nosy Isn’t a Bad Thing!

When it comes to digging up facts, being nosy is a good thing. Reporters can ask those in the know questions to get the facts they need. And they don’t back down from asking the tough question that’s on everyone’s mind.

As a Young Reporter, you’ll develop your “nose for news.” Like a bloodhound, you’ll be able to sniff out a news story from a mile away!

And if you really love a challenge, consider becoming an investigative reporter. These tough journalists use their sources and good old-fashioned research to break important stories. Remember, a good reporter doesn’t give up just because a story might be hard to get!

3 Keep Up with the News

Many story ideas come from the news, so read the newspaper, watch TV news, listen to news on the radio and go online for ideas. Maybe your favorite singing sensation is coming to town, so set up an interview! Most news is written for adults, but keep an eye or an ear out for something you can turn into a story for young readers who are around your age!

In journalism, you gather the same facts every time—the 5 W’s & H, which stands for WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW. Unlike fiction writing or creative writing, top reporters always stick to the facts for their news stories. You can gather the 5 W’s and H through research, by interviewing someone who’s in the know (like an expert in the field) or by covering an event firsthand (that means going where the action is).

Bear’s First Cub Reporters A cub reporter is someone who’s new to journalism.

Bear Essential first published news stories written by kid reporters back in September 1981, when the Tucsonbased newspaper expanded to schools in Phoenix!

This first batch of aspiring young writers covered all sorts of news. They shared stories about interesting school projects and events. They wrote about happenings in the community. Some enjoyed covering subjects like science, space or the environment.

5 Writing the News

After you’ve gathered the 5W’s & H of your story, it’s time get writing! Keep your news writing simple and straightforward.

Remember that young readers can have short attention spans, so you need to keep your words interesting and get to the point.

The first paragraph of a news story is called the “lead,” which is where a good reporter grabs the reader’s attention.

Play up the most exciting or hard-hitting facts in your lead. Or start with a question to intrigue your reader. Using humor can be a good hook, too!

For subsequent paragraphs, go into other, finer details that are important to your story. Journalists call this the “inverted pyramid” style of writing, where the most important facts are up at the top of the story, and the less important details follow.

1Getting Started

Young Reporters choose the stories that they cover, which means your first job is to come up with a story idea. A good writer keeps his or her readers in mind. So ask yourself, will Bear readers be interested in this story?

As a reporter, you are the eyes and ears of the newspaper. You can cover news that’s happening around you—at school, on your sports team or club, or in your community. Some of your best stories will come from things that really interest you.

When Being Nosy Isn’t a Bad Thing!

When it comes to digging up facts, being nosy is a good thing. Reporters can ask those in the know questions to get the facts they need. And they don’t back down from asking the tough question that’s on everyone’s mind.

As a Young Reporter, you’ll develop your “nose for news.” Like a bloodhound, you’ll be able to sniff out a news story from a mile away!

And if you really love a challenge, consider becoming an investigative reporter. These tough journalists use their sources and good old-fashioned research to break important stories. Remember, a good reporter doesn’t give up just because a story might be hard to get!

3 Keep Up with the News

Many story ideas come from the news, so read the newspaper, watch TV news, listen to news on the radio and go online for ideas. Maybe your favorite singing sensation is coming to town, so set up an interview! Most news is written for adults, but keep an eye or an ear out for something you can turn into a story for young readers who are around your age!

In journalism, you gather the same facts every time—the 5 W’s & H, which stands for WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW. Unlike fiction writing or creative writing, top reporters always stick to the facts for their news stories. You can gather the 5 W’s and H through research, by interviewing someone who’s in the know (like an expert in the field) or by covering an event firsthand (that means going where the action is).

Bear’s First Cub Reporters A cub reporter is someone who’s new to journalism.

Bear Essential first published news stories written by kid reporters back in September 1981, when the Tucsonbased newspaper expanded to schools in Phoenix!

This first batch of aspiring young writers covered all sorts of news. They shared stories about interesting school projects and events. They wrote about happenings in the community. Some enjoyed covering subjects like science, space or the environment.

5 Writing the News

After you’ve gathered the 5W’s & H of your story, it’s time get writing! Keep your news writing simple and straightforward.

Remember that young readers can have short attention spans, so you need to keep your words interesting and get to the point.

The first paragraph of a news story is called the “lead,” which is where a good reporter grabs the reader’s attention.

Play up the most exciting or hard-hitting facts in your lead. Or start with a question to intrigue your reader. Using humor can be a good hook, too!

For subsequent paragraphs, go into other, finer details that are important to your story. Journalists call this the “inverted pyramid” style of writing, where the most important facts are up at the top of the story, and the less important details follow.

Warmer weather and the end of school are just around the corner—it's time to think about summer camps! In fact, now is a great time to start researching and planning so that you can have the best summer ever, with a little help from Bear.

It’s hard to believe that it was just last month when Arizona saw record-setting snowfall. There was snow on the ground in many places around the state— spots that rarely see the chilly white stuff. Maybe you had the chance to build a snowman or throw a snowball at your siblings or friends. Despite the delight many desert dwellers took in the once-in-a-decade winter wonderland, now temperatures are pretty much back to normal and, hard to believe, but summer is just around the corner!

What are your plans for the summer months? How will you occupy your time, keep your mind sharp and keep your cool when the temperatures really start to rise? One way to stay active and engaged is to attend one or more fabulous summer camps!

Aspiring thespians can go to a summer camp that will immerse you in the theater and make you a star on the summer stage. Several camps let kids can participate in a musical, a straight play, or even improvisation. Singing sensations and twinkle toes tappers and twirlers can find their spotlight, too, at a camp near you. Sing and dance to your heart’s content!

You can hone your sports skills, whatever they may be, at summer camp.

What’s your ball game? Betcha you can find it at camp. Batter up! Make it a super summer with baseball or softball. Spike it over the volleyball net. Go for the smash on the tennis court. Dribble it down the soccer field. Sink it from the free-throw line. Hit the bulls-eye at the archery range. Stick the landing in the gym.

If you don’t have one sport that’s close to your heart, summer camp is a great place to try a number of different sports and activities.
