Bears Magazine

August 2013

Welcome guys, this is your first newsletter for a while. Hopefully you will enjoy and maybe finds photos of yourself and friends. The newsletter has been a while in the making as we have struggled to find people with the skills and time to be the editors, as well as trying to get content. I bet you know where we are heading – yup you’re right – we are looking for a magazine editor and some great articles or even not so great articles - even some pictures, funnies anything! Even though we had a lot of enthusiasm (in bursts) and a few stops and starts we have finally got something together. It may not be the highest quality and more than likely has a few typos, but we thought it was more important to get something out without losing another few months. If you can help us out by becoming the editor or a helper then that would be fantastic. If you can help (I’m sure you can!) could you please contact Glenn or Owen we would be very grateful. As to the content – I’m afraid it’s mainly pictures sprinkled with the odd words and articles. We have the mandatory words from the President and the financials from the treasurer (boring!) But it did fill another page.

Contact us :

I would like to thanks the contributors and various editors and helpers for helping getting the mag back on the road. – Alexei, Gary, Isaac, Glenn, and Steve.

Bear Essential Reading (the boring stuff)

The President’s Report Hi

Guys, hope this finds you all

well. I was elected as your president at April’s AGM this year, My vision is to see this club return to it’s former strength of a few years ago. I alone cannot do this, our club needs the support of yourselves, and any more encouragement you can give to your friends etc. to come and join us would be great. Your committee, has organized the year of events ahead and would like you all to look at what is planned and mark them on your calendar as not to forget what's coming up. We’ll also be returning to a mail out of a newsletter as well more frequent flyers, to help inform

and remind people of what's happening. The committee this year is at full strength with the highest number of volunteers helping. So, please guys do show them a little bit of thanks and encouragement. We’re all donating our time and effort so that you can enjoy a place to meet other similar guys in a safe, enjoyable venue as well as a comfortable socializing environment. Hope to see you all soon. Hugs Glenn

Events - Bears at Attennn-shun! Uniform Night - Lest We Forget In homage of Anzac Day, Bears Perth held its annual “Uniform Den night” on the 26th April. There were around 50 guys who attended this event in remembrance; it was great to see so many familiar faces plus some new faces. It was great to see so many “bears” in uniform in remembrance of our diggers who had fallen, gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. On the night, Alexei won “Chase the Bear” ($200) and Brian D. won best dressed. This was the first event organized by the new Committee. We were proud that it ran so well—great food, great music, but best of all the “Bears” had a great time. I like to take this time to thank the Committee for their time and effort in making this event such a success. Glenn Dale

Village People Den Night

Bears Perth held a ‘Village People Themed’ event for your Friday Den Night, May 24th 2013 @ Loton Park Club House. Doors were open at 9pm. Great turn out with many members arriving in costume, not surprisingly the most popular character was the LeatherMan. We had around 45 people turn up throughout the night... The Best Costume was won by Graeme, for his superb impersonation of the Leather-man. His efforts won him a cool bottle of wine “Nice one mate”. Chase The Bear was won by Paul Curran, although it was only a huge $25, as Alexei Romanov had won it previously and scored $225... *CONGRATULATIONS* to all the lucky winners! Thanks again for all of those who attended this event. As well, a huge thank you to your committee members for supplying the merchandise including the raffle prize.

Around 22 people attended With the help of Jeff we produced four different styles of soups for the meal. Pea and Ham, Tomato, Potato & Leak and Pumpkin, with the help of a few loaves of crusty bread everyone had their fill. A right regular “Bear Fest” or should that be “Bear Feast”. But wait there was more…Dessert! Pavlova and two cheesecakes from Jeff and a gorgeous apple crumble supplied by both C.J. and Jeff. Many thanks to all the guys who were able to help out, and make the event a great success.. Glenn Dale & Steven

Events - Bears kicking arse at Hibearnation Kevin Davies Represents BPI at Vic Bears Southern Hibearnation

Kevin Davies currently holds the title of Mr. West Oz Bear 2013. This event was held at the Connections Night Club in Northbridge earlier this year on Saturday 23rd of February. He wishes to thank everyone at Connection’s and the promoters of Mr. West Oz Bear for this amazing award. More recently though Kevin was able to attend Mr. Australasia Bear 2013 in Victoria. His partner Peter supported him during this national competition held at the Laird Hotel in Abbotsford Melbourne, on Saturday the 15th of June. “Leading up to Mr. Australasia Bear there were loads of social events and we were lucky enough to meet heaps of amazing people, plus we made many new friends as well. Every opportunity I got while competing in Victoria I was more than proud to promote Western Australia & Mr. West Oz Bear. The night of the competition was totally exhilarating. All the contestants were very supportive of each other. What a great bunch of guys! Kevin The first prize & title of Mr. Australasia Bear went to Lucian who happens to be from New Zealand, which is also my home country. I was glad about this, though even more surprised and overjoyed to be awarded the first ever title of ‘Mr. Congeniality 2013’ at the Southern Hibearnation/Mr. Australasia Bear Competition! This new award came from all of the competitors via a proxy, thanks guys you all rock! The competition was hard work, but so much fun. At one event all the competitors had to raise money for two different charitable organizations, selling raffle tickets any we felt necessary, this led to lots of flirtation and other suggestive moves. A lot of fun had by all. Photos taken at all the Hibearnation events are on the VicBears web site, great viewing J. This experience has to be one of the biggest highlights of my life to date. I wish to thank VicBears, The Laird Hotel and all the Southern Hibearnation Promoters for an amazing event. I will be attending future Southern Hibearnation events and if any of you get the chance to go, I fully recommend you do.” Kevin Davies

Congratulation from the Committee and Members to Kevin for winning Mr Congeniality at HiBearnation

Bears Playing Around?

Had a lot of play this season? We can all have our on and off seasons. Sometimes we end up sitting on the sidelines while other times we are busy playing the field and barely have a chance to rest. But the more we play, the more we need to maintain our equipment; and in this context that means testing. For many guys, how often we should test may not be something we are very familiar with!. More often than not, testing may be one of those things that we can easily forget about or just put off for a while. We may go for an HIV and STI test when we have a symptom like discharge or an itch, or some uncertainty from an encounter. But when things “seem” alright it’s not that uncommon to just simply forget or put off testing. Regardless of why we may or may not test, there are some pretty straight forward points to keep in mind to help us figure out how often we should test. These are level of risk, what we did, number of sexual partners, and other events such as entering into a relationship, Depending on these factors, the general rule of thumb is that guys will fall into one of three testing periods; once a year, twice a year or every three months. Of course the greater the risk and higher number of partners means the more often we test. Guys that have ten or more casual partners in 6 months should aim to test every 3 months. If you have between 2 and 9 partners in a 6 month period test twice a year, and if you have had one partner it is still advisable to test yearly. Regardless of the kind of sex we have, if condoms are not used, there can always be some level of risk of HIV or STI’s. If we have a few casual partners, but engage in higher risk activities, we may want to test more frequently. While it is excellent practice to get into a testing routine, things happen. If you feel you have put yourself at risk or notice symptoms such as discharge, rashes, bumps etc., you don’t need to wait for your next routine test, just make an appointment to get tested. So remember if you want to stay on your game then take care of your equipment. For information on where you can go for an HIV and STI test go to itest.org.au or call 9482 0000. Or call the M Clinic (for men who have sex with men) at 9227 0734 - Tony Bober
