Department of
Woodworking & Dept. of Woodworking & Furniture Design The Department of Woodworking and Furniture Design, offering the highest quality of furniture design education in Korea, aims to educate the ones of futuristic design and manufacturing abilities into creative furniture designers. Today the furniture industry has taken its places one of the leading industries for everyday life since our various living spaces needs a range of different furniture. It now requires academic and scientific knowledge. The department strives to maintain a high quality education via eminent professionals and scholars in the area of furniture design and by providing first class workshops with rich facilities. To lead the field globally, the department has concluded official relations with foreign universities of high reputation-University of Art and Design in Helsinki(Finland) and Rhode Island School of Design(USA)- to meet academic interests through exchanging students and professors. Also, opportunities to participate in Denmark International Study Program, International Furniture Design Workshop, and other various valuable experiences. Moreover, an interior design course is introduced for prepare for social participation. The department endeavors cultivate active and creative furniture designers who can design futuristic furniture for tomorrow. Furthermore for the advanced studying, program offers the master of fine arts degree for a two-year-course, and doctor of fine arts degree for a two-year-course-study.

furniture design 홍익대학교 미술대학 목조형가구학과 본교 목조형가구학과는 국내 가구디자인 교육의 최고 학과로서 창의적이고 실질적인 가구디자인 및 제작능력을 배양하여 미래의 디자인 문화를 선도할 수 있는 인재를 양 성하는데 교육 목표를 두고 있다. 오늘날, 21세기의 공간은 가구문화의 다양화를 요구 하게 되었다. 이에 따라 가구산업은 생활문화를 선도하는 산업으로 자리 잡으면서 체 계적인 학문적 뒷받침을 필요로 하게 되었다. 이에 본 학과는 세계적인 수준의 기계작 업실 등 최고의 교육시설을 갖추고 가구디자인 분야에서 작가, 디자이너, 이론가로도 활동하고 있는 훌륭한 전문가들을 교수진으로 확보하여 최상의 가구디자인 교육을 유 지하도록 노력하고 있다. 국제화에 앞장서고 있는 본 학과는 외국의 가구디자인 명문 대학 - 헬싱키 미술디자인대학(핀란드), 로드아일랜드 디자인대학(미국)-등과 자매결 연을 맺고 학생 교환을 통한 학문적 교류, 하계 방학을 이용한 덴마크 가구디자인 연수 프로그램 참가, 해외 유명 디자이너 초청 국제가구디자인 워크샵 개최, 국내외 가구디 자인 페어 참가 등을 통해 국제화 시대에 부응하는 다각적인 교육을 적극적으로 임함 으로써 세계 디자인의 변화에 능동적으로 대처하고 있다. 또한, 공간에 대한 이해를 돕 기 위해 실내디자인 과목을 개설하고 있으며 산학협동을 통한 실질적인 교육체제를 갖 추고 미래의 새로운 가구문화를 창출할 수 있는 능동적이고 창조적인 가구 디자이너 양성에 힘쓰고 있다. 본 학과는 학사과정 4년을 비롯하여 석사과정 2년, 박사과정 2년 을 두고 있어 가구디자인 분야에 학문적인 교육연계 체계를 갖추고 있다.

Seoul Living Design Fair 2010 2010 서울리빙디자인페어 | 2010년 3월 25일(목) ~ 3월 29일(월), COEX 홍익대학교 목조형가구학과 재학생 5명은 2010년 3월 25일부터 3월 29일까지 서울 코엑스 전시장에서 열린 2010 서울리빙디자인페어에 5작품을 출품하였다. 리빙디자인페어에 매년 참가하고 있는 본교의 프로그램은 산학협동으로 진행되고 있다. 본교는 국내 가구 박람회 중 가장 큰 규모를 자랑하는 기 행 사의 참여를 학과 커리큘럼을 통해 익혔던 지식을 현장에 직접 적용하고 있으며, 신인 가구디자이너로 서의 역량을 선보일 수 있는 기회로 삼고 있다.
5 students of the Dept.of Woodworking & Furniture Design at Hong-ik Univ. Exhibited 5 pieces of work at the ‘2010 Seoul Living Design Fair’ that took place at the Seoul COEX Exhibition Hall on March 25th of the year 2010 to the 29th. The program of the ‘Seoul Living Design Fair’ in which the school is yearly taking part in, is ran through academic-industrial cooperation. Our school has been applying knowledge taught through the school’s curriculum and has been taking it as an opportunity to display abilities as new furniture designers.
KOFURN 2010 2010 한국국제가구 및 인테리어산업대전 | 2010년 8월 26일(목) ~ 8월 30일(월), KINTEX
목조형가구학과는 ‘한국국제가구 및 인테리어 대전(KOFURN)’에 11회에 걸쳐 참가하여 혁신적이고 참신한 가구소재 및 디자인을 선보임으로써 디자인 실무와 전시 현장에 대한 경험을 축적하고 있다. 2010 KOFURN에 참가한 9명의 재학생들은 국내외 가구 및 인테리어 산업의 현주소를 이해하고 이를 바탕으로 가구 및 인테리어의 새로운 비전을 제시할 수 있는 능력을 선보였다.
The Dept. of Woodworking & Furniture Design has been accumulating experiences in exhibition fields by taking part in ‘KOFURN’ eleven times, displaying innovative and original furniture materials and designs. 9 of the students who took part in the 2010 KOFURN comprehended the state of home and abroad’s interior and furniture’s industry. And with this in the background, competence of presenting new vision in this field was shown.
Seoul Design Fair 2010 서울 디자인 한마당 2010 | 2010년 9월 17일(금) ~ 10월 7일(목), 서울 잠실 종합운동장
본 학과 12명은 2010년 9월 17일부터 10월 7일까지 잠실 주 경기장에서 개최한 서울 디자인 한마당 에 13작품을 출품하였다. 서울 디자인 한마당은 서울시에서 주최하는 큰 행사로 참가한 재학생은 Design For All이라는 주제에 발맞추어 국내 및 해외 디자인과 함께 더불어 가구 디자인의 새로운 방향성을 제시하였다.
12 students of the Dept. of Woodworking and Furniture Design at Hongik University exhibited design furniture pieces at “Seoul Design Fair 2010”. Each pieces showed to share design of consideration and communication with the world under the theme of “Design for All”. The Seoul Design Fair is the world’s comprehensive design festival and is organized by Seoul to celebrate its designation as the World Design Capital (WDC) and to develop as a world design culture hub.

본 학과는 급변하는 가구디자인 문화에 다각적으로 대처할 수 있는 인재를 양성하기 위하여 해외 유명 디자이너 및 교수를 초청하여 국제 가구디자인 워크샵을 개최하여 왔다. ‘ 2009, 2010 국제 가구디자 인워크샵’은 네덜란드 크리스 카벨 교수와 일본 ISAO HOSOE디자이너를 초청하여 학생 30명으로 이 루어진 참가자와 함께 ‘X10’과 ‘Neomadic Seating’이라는 주제를 가지고 진행되었다.
Our Dept. has been opening international furniture design workshops by inviting noted foreign designers and professors in order to bring up competent beings with the ability to cope with the rapidly changing culture of furniture design. The 2009, 2010 international workshop on furniture design’was held on the topic ‘X10’ and ‘neomadic seating’ with the participation of professor Chris Kabel, Isao Hosoe invited by the organizer of the workshop and about 30 students of Hongik University.

목조형가구학과는 2000년 ABITARE IL TEMPO(베로나, 이태리)를 필두로 2004년 밀라노 국제가구 박람회(밀라노,이태리), 도쿄 디자이너스 위크(도쿄-교토,일본), DECOSIT(브뤼셀,벨기에), 2006년 파 리 국제박람회(파리, 프랑스), 쾰른 국제가구박람회(쾰른, 독일)등 해외전시에 꾸준한 참여를 해왔고, 2009년에도 쾰른 국제가구박람회(쾰른, 독일)를 참가하는 등 목조형가구학과의 위상 제고와 더불어 한국 디자인의 세계성을 부각시키기 위해 노력하고 있다.
The Dept. of Woodworking and Furniture Design took part in the 2000 Abitare IL Tempo(Verona, Italy) to start with, Milano international Furniture Fair(Milan, Italy) in the year 2004, Tokyo Designer’s Week(Tokyo, Japan), followed by the 2005 Cologne International Furniture fair(Cologne, Germany), Tokyo Designer’s Week(Tokyo-Kyoto, Japan)and Decosit(Brussels, Belgium), Also, through consistent participation in leading exhibitions overseas such as the 2006 Paris International Fair(Paris, France). In 2009, Cologne International furniture Fair, the Dept. of Woodworking & Furniture design is striving to bring the globalization along with improvement of a phase into relief.

Almost transparent blue 우연히 길을 걷다 버려진 유리병을 보고 빛과 공기가 머물고 있는 것을 느꼈다. 평범한 병속에 담겨진 무형의 것들을 이용하여 무엇인가를 만들고 싶었다. 그래서 사용 후에 비워진 파란 병들을 이용하여 새벽의 투명에 가까운 푸른 기운을 표현해 보았다.
When I was walking down the street I found a blue bottle by chance. It looked so beautiful when the light goes through the bottle. 모습을 형상화 하고 있는 人이라는 한자처럼, 우리 주변의 사람을 나의 일부

라고 생각해 보는 것은 어떨까? 人의 모습을 가장 잘 살리고 있다고 생각하는 샴쌍둥이의 형상과 한자의 유기적인 모양을 빌려 스툴을 제작하였다.
I am anxious that the individualism is rampant in this society. Suppose that others as one part of your soul just like the Chinese letter ‘人’. Let’s look nostalgically back to the history of chairs. Chair’s legs and its sits were always provided a solid foundation for the chair. Do not skip this foundation, because design is always developed from the basic form.

At the first glance, it seems to have simple shape. However, it is not simply at all in that it is based on my empathy. As the poet describes, the writer tries to hide his emotion but he expects somebody to know the emotion at the same time. Therefore, the poet can be said that it is contradictory because these two emotions are conflicting. The emotion talked about before is the author’s sadness and there will be no more extra explanation; furthermore the readers can have their own interpretations. We never know if anyone would change the sad emotion into happiness

I believe that all objects should be based on an ideology, or have a connotative language, without which they will be flat and superficial. Designs may be well executed, but they will never be expressive, or rise to the poetic. This work could be the first experiment for that. Each shape came from a part of poem which is about the raindrops and would be my obsession with starting invention and a desire for new experiences.
