SUSQUEHANA FINANCIAL CENTER
Hagerstown, MD USA
Program: 3-story, 55,000 square foot speculative office building, developed using Revit BIM technology, designed to LEED silver standards for core and shell buildings, on a 3.95 acre site. Design Narrative: A glass curtain wall extends around the entire perimiter of the building allowing natural light to enter into all office spaces through full floor to ceiling double-glazed low-emission windows. However, the monotony of a corporate glass box office building is avoided through the use of angular building footprint and variety in the glazing colors, window sizing, and patterning of horizontal and vertical mullion caps. Activities: I was involved in the design development, construction documents drawings, permitting phase, and in the coordination of engineering consultants for the project.

Program: 17-story, 46 unit residential tower on an 18,000 SF site, with pool, gym, and other amenities on 7th floor deck, on top of 6 levels of parking. Design Narrative: For this urban infill tower project, the tower footprint ws kept to a minimum in order to maximize the tower height. This allows for a superior unit layout, with only four corner units per tower floor. Additional loft units are provided fronting the street, to conceal the garage from view and improve the building’s urban connectivity. A supergrid, frames, colors and movement in the facade were utilized as aesthetic features of the building. UNIKA RESIDENCES
Miami, FL USA
Program: 15-story, 124-unit residential tower on an 80,000 SF site, including the renovation of an existing office building, and the provision for amenity deck with swimming pool and amenities. Design Narrative: The major design challenge of this project was to design this new condominium tower around an existing two-story office building to remain and be renovated on the site. This led to the L-shaped design of the tower, with garage levels included on lower floors, and an open 5-story height atrium space above a dropoff space on the west side of the project. The building’s contemporary design is highlighted by its varied massing, framing and color pallette. Activities: I was involved in the coordination of the project with consultants, the generation of construction documents, and the permitting process.

City of Miami New Development Perspective View
CITY PLANNING DEPARTMENT
Miami, FL USA
Description and Activities: As a Land Development Technician, I assisted in the design review of new large-scale development proposals within the City of Miami. Our department produced graphic illustrations and written anlalyses of projects applying for development approval, and we met with developers and architects to clarify code requirements and design guidelines. We also produced written material and renderings illustrating developments consistent with good planning principles. There was a large development boom during my tenure at the City, and we were able to enforce positive urban design concepts into many of the large-scale development projects. Principles of New Urbanism were applied, including requiring buildings to line garage and service functions with active habitable space, and create a projectw with appropriate scale and massing for the site.

JUMERIAH LAKE TOWERS EXTENSION
Dubai, UAE
Program: Development of Design Control Regulations for a master plan for 6 parcels of land totaling approximately 31,182 m2, which were part of a master development in Dubai, UAE. Design Narrative: The intention of the plan was to regulate the massing and location of the towers and building podiums in order to create an urban harmony among the buildings, while allowing the towers to have a freedom in their forms. The code required the buildings to have 3 levels of basement parking, 3 levels of podium parking and 44 levels maximum for towers, with mandatory ground level retail and a minimum 7 m promenade mandated on the lake side. Activties: I was involved in the site planning process, preparation of project graphic images and the drafting of the Design Control Regulations document.

Conceputal Massing Under Proposed Zoning Code
BRICKELL ZONING STUDY
Miami, FL USA
Description: For this planning exercise, our team conducted an analysis for property owners in the West Brickell neighborhood in downtown Miami to determine the effect of a new city zoning code on their development rights. Through this analysis, we created conceptual development schemes for several sites in the West Brickell area and worked with a team of consultants to review the financial, planning, transportation and legal aspects of the proposed regulatory changes. We presented our findings at a series of public hearings with City Boards which were reviewing the proposed updated zoning ordinance as it went through the adoption process. Activities: I was involved in the analysis of the existing and proposed zoning codes, the generation of graphic models in CAD and Photoshop, creating the presentation materials, and coordinating the consultant team involved in the study.

Program: Competition entry for an urban university campus on a 6 acre site, to include aproximately 300,000 SF of space for university functions, including classrooms, administrative functions, library, auditorium and student centre, as well as an office building component with an additional 220,000 SF of gross floor area. Design Narrative: Concepts of openness and sustainability drove the design of the project. The academic block massing is broken up to allow natural ventilation and light to permeate through to the interior open atrium, and the large overhanging roof of the central academic block creates a shaded area for student activities as well as protecting the glass facade from solar hear gain. An accsessible green roof serves as an additional amenity and sustainable featue of the proposal. Activities: I was involved in site planning and analysis, floor plan layouts and preparation of presentation materials.

Program: Invited competition for 6 luxury residential towers on a new development site in Dubai. There were two tower types, a 40-floor beach tower and a 44-floor marina tower. Our design was the runner-up entry in the competition. Design Narrative: The project aimed to break up the massing of the towers through the insertion of elements such as frames and screens throughout the towers. These elements also contributed to the sustainable features of the towers, as the screening assisted with shading of the tower glazing, and the frames contained landscaped planters spaced throughout the towers. Green roofs were also proposed at the tops of the towers. Activties: I was involved in the preparation of drawings, floor plans, sheet layouts, graphic exhibits and analysis of the project’s sustainability issues. Beach Tower Typical Plan

Program: Scheme for a development company in the Middle East, comprising two 11-story towers on a 16,000 m2 site, with retail, restaurants and a banquet hall on the ground floor. The hotel tower contains 190-keys, and the office tower holds 17,000 m2 of office space. Design Narrative: The concept for this signature destination development was to develop distinct architectural appearances for the two towers, which are unified through a large enclosed garden lobby at the ground level and a sky amenity bridge at the tenth level. The office tower features orthagonal lines with a strong emphasis on horizontalilty, while the hotel tower floors are designed with alternating, undulating walls. Activities: I was involved in the preparation of all floor plans, sections and building tabulations.

ACADEMIC WORK
Thesis Project, Spring 2003

Rome Semester, Fall 2002: During this semester living and studying in Rome, the focus of the semester was on drawing and learning from the existing historic architectural precedents. The class final project was to recreate a drawing from the artist and architect Giovanni Piranesi, starting with one of his perspectival “vedutas, but transforming this view into an architectural elevation drawing. My group chose the Piazza Navona view, and created an oblique elevation through sketches, research, photographs and measurements in the piazza.
MASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE
University of Miami, Florida
Program Description and Activities: I completed my Masters of Architecture degree from Fall 2000 to Spring 2003. The University of Miami Architecture program places a large emphasis on study of historical and traditional architectural typologies, as well as the skill of hand drawing. The school is also a large advocate of contextual urban planning and the New Urbanism movement, and each of our design studios began with an analysis of the existing surrounding context, and our design projects were conceived of in a manner appropriate in scale and architectural design fitting for the site. The program also encouraged architecture studios abroad, and I participated in a semster in Rome, a summer studio in Tokyo, and a class visit to Berlin during an urban housing studio. These travel studios were useful in informing us of best practices of urban design and architecture, and, in addition to creating a fantastic series of drawings, the students gained knowledge and understanding of the overall design and details of important buildings, monuments and public spaces.
Sketches, Rome Semester, Fall 2002
Spring 2001: The focus of this architecture studio was the design of a wood research center and museum in downtown Miami. The three proposed buildings reference historic wood frame structures: a long heavy-timber frame building, reminiscent of New England mill factories, an education building with a long double-height loggia, similar to typologies found in New Orleans and Key West, and a third smaller building, containing offices and restrooms, designed using a vernacular board and baten construction technique.
ACADEMIC WORK
Japan Studio, Summer 2001: During this summer course, our studio spent 5 weeks in Japan and China, studying Asian culture, art, architecture and city planning. The subject of my documentary drawing was the historic 1935 Asakura Choso House. The house exemplifies many elments of traditional domestic Japanese architecture, such as post-and beam wood-frame construction, sliding doors and windows, integration with nature, and tatame mats covering the floor.
