Inside JULY/AUGUST 2020
Throughout his production lifetime, SOMNA’s always been in his element when working in synergy with singers and songwriters. That “beside you” connection that can bring voice, message and extra dimensions to his studio creations. That dynamic’s reached a new apex through his debut album(“Beside You”) that - almost without exception - is built around the producer/singer simpatico. Right on time to dig in and discuss is Tim Stark, who gets SOMNA detailing the release’s meaning, personally and musically.

nSports Entertainment Group (SEG) and The
Media Nanny have announced that they will join forces and continue their business activities as one company. As a result of the merger, a new SEG division will launch, SEG Artists in addition to the existing branches Football, Cycling and Esports. The Media Nanny will continue to operate as an international PR management agency, but will add sports athletes to its current client base, which consists mainly of international music artists. SEG Artists will focus on artist management as well as bookings, providing PR and marketing services and creating brand partnerships. The new division within SEG will be set up and run by José Woldring, CEO and founder of The Media Nanny. “There are many reasons why I am excited about SEG’s collaboration with The Media Nanny, but it is mostly because of the entrepreneurial talent and spirit of José and her team”, says Kees Vos, CEO and founder
of SEG. “The entertainment company José has built over the past decade fits perfectly into SEG’s growth strategy. The PR and marketing expertise of The Media Nanny team will add value to SEG’s array of services. I can’t wait for us to jointly continue creating new opportunities for all of our clients, both athletes and artists.” “About a year ago, the idea of further growing the company started playing in my head and it has been on my mind ever since. From the initial conversations I had with Kees and the team at SEG, I knew: this is going to work. SEG is working with an experienced team of agents and staff, with extraordinary expertise on every level. Their unique way of managing talents appeals to me greatly. When it comes to talent management, we share the same vision. From the start I felt such a positive energy flowing between Kees and myself, which is important for me to make this collaboration succeed. I’m really looking forward to the next chapter in my career and the new challenges it will bring,” says José Woldring.

nTracklib (www.tracklib.com), the world’s first and
only service for quickly finding and legally clearing original music for sampling, announced on June 15, 2020, it has raised $4.5M investment from a host of new investors including Eelko van Kooten, Founder of international dance label Spinnin’ Records’s— which he sold to WMG in 2017 for north of $100M EUR—as well as previous investors including Sony Innovation Fund. Tracklib most recently raised $1.7M from Sony Innovation Fund and WndrCo in May 2019. racklib will use these funds to increase its music catalog and user base following a major update of the service last month, which included a completely revamped user interface and an upgrade to a subscription model. Tracklib’s extensive 100k+ catalog of sample-friendly original music ranges from 1928 to 2020 and consists of everything from

Mozart to Isaac Hayes. Many artists have released songs with Tracklib samples—including Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Phantogram, Mary J. Blige—and J. Cole’s 5x Platinum single “Middle Child” which was built around a sample from Tracklib. “To have closed this incredible round right on the heels of fully rebuilding and relaunching our service--when we haven’t been in the same room together for months -is as thrilling and exhausting as you can imagine during such a tumultuous time in the world,” said Pär Almqvist, founder and CEO of Tracklib. “None of this could have been achieved without a stellar and tireless team, the outspoken support from the global music community, and the continued confidence of Sony Innovation Fund, Jörg Mohaupt and other supportive investors. We could not be prouder to add Eelko’s experience, strategic insights and expertise to our company.”
“As a former music publisher and label founder, I have witnessed first-hand both the artistic benefits and business challenges of sampling, and long admired Tracklib as they have made automated sample clearance affordable, accessible, legal, and lucrative on a global scale,” said Spinnin’ Records’s Founder Eelko van Kooten. “I am pleased to join Pär and the team at this exciting time in their journey. Tracklib is the perfect place for creatives to get inspired and have samples cleared.” Tracklib is the world’s first and only digital platform for legally clearing samples, solving a big problem in the music industry: a vast majority of all sampling is done illegally because of the complexities and high cost usually involved with sample clearance. Tracklib’s library consists of over 100,000 original recordings—everything from Mozart to Isaac Hayes—and can be licensed for sampling for as little as $50. Tracklib’s revolutionary solution has been embraced by artistic and industry giants such as Ludacris, Questlove, Jazzy Jeff, and Zaytoven, who have publicly praised the company. Artists who have released songs with samples from Tracklib include DJ Khaled, Mary J. Blige, Lil Wayne, BROCKHAMPTON, Phantogram, and J. Cole also used a Tracklib sample for his 5x Platinum single “Middle Child”. Tracklib launched in 2018 and is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, with representation in New York City and London. After years making his way through the scene with a steady stream of delicate, soulful releases on some of D+B’s most formidable labels, such as Shogun Audio, SGN:LTD, and MTA, Mitekiss returns to Hospital Records with a brand new four track EP titled “Objects To Push.” Since the release of his debut album “Crate Six Seven,” that received support from liquid pioneers Technimatic, Makoto, Etherwood and BCee, Mitekiss has been cooking up his latest venture with Hospital Records, the “Objects To Push” EP. Consisting of four sublime tracks that explore the soulful, deeper domains of drum & bass. The musicality and versatility of Mitekiss’ production are brought to light once more, drawing for his love of jazz, disco and 174 beats. “Matter (feat. Vonné)” eases in with elegant melodies, soothing piano flourishes and the eloquent vocal hooks of London based singer-songwriter Vonné. Named after dark matter, “which represents the lyrics ‘gravity pulling me under’”, explains Mitekiss. Smooth liquid-jazz bubbler “Tonic” follows, as hypnotizing pads and sophisticated piano licks rest delicately upon a blues-style upright bassline and rolling breakbeats. Teaming up with Bristol’s Ruth Royall, “Magic” adds a touch of undeniable euphoria to the EP. A classic feelgood drum & bass anthem that pays homage to Mitekiss’ love for all things uplifting and heartfelt. Last but certainly not least, “Charter” brings the EP to a close. Darker, spellbinding atmospherics and hard hitting bass stabs are a clear demonstration of the depths of the EP. Back in 2019, Maya Jane Coles and her alter-ego, Nocturnal Sunshine, unleashed “Full Circle,” Nocturnal Sunshine’s sophomore LP. Taking the alias in a new direction and diving into hip-hop influences, Maya also invited a mix of collaborators on board from Peaches and Catnapp to Three Six Mafia’s Gangsta Boo and Young M.A. Coming together with Australian singer-songwriter, Ry X on the brooding ‘Gravity’, the single now finds new forms with three club-centred remixes from the shapeshifting French-Canadian production talent, Jacques Greene, UK drum and bass heavy-weight, Calibre and Berlin-based Cocoon affiliate, Emanuel Satie. The package stands as yet another moment in the Nocturnal Sunshine journey, following their contribution to the prestigious BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix back in March; the first time for Maya under the Nocturnal Sunshine cloak. Grabbing the attention of Maya with his ethereal vocals, Ry X partnered with Coles to create a bubbling and deeply emotive cut in “Gravity;” centred around Nocturnal Sunshine’s synonymous downtempo breakbeats and Ry X’s haunting yet mildly soulful vocals. The swirling and visceral tone set by the original is carried forward in the rework of Jacques Greene. An artist whose career has presented a myriad of moments, his latest also came in 2019 with the arrival of his own sophomore album “Dawn Chorus” on LuckyMe. Taking up the tempo with a bumping kick, Greene allows the vocals of both Ry X and Nocturnal Sunshine to take center stage among added rave grit and flecks of his wellknown ethereal sound. Jumping into warming drum and bass sensibilities, Calibre switches up the arrangement with heart-tugging strings and keys, all met with body shifting D’n’B wizadry. Meanwhile, Berlin’s Emanuel Satie provides yet another differing take from the hypnotic techno space. An animalistic feel takes hold with the unrelenting 4x4, jagged iterances and ominous droning bass.

Born and raised in El Paso, TX, Riot Ten exploded into the world of EDM at the young age of 22. Joining the Dim Mak Records family in 2017, with additional music out on Never Say Die, Insomniac, Bassrush and Excision’s “Rottun Records”, Riot Ten blasted off with four #1 top 100 dubstep singles and his music can be heard around the world from the likes of DJ Snake, Zeds Dead, The Chainsmokers, Excision and many more. Bass heavyweight Riot Ten flexes his versatility on the 7-track EP, “Hype or Die: Emergence.” Featuring a VIP mix of festival anthem “Rail Breaker” and collaborations alongside DIESEL (aka Shaquille O’Neal), Whales, and Bok Nero, the EP presents a mature palette of sounds, blending future bass, hardstyle and Latin instrumentation amongst his signature dubstep drops. The Emergence EP is Riot Ten’s first multi-track release since his successful “Hype or Die: Nightmares” studio album and the subsequent deluxe package, which followed last year. It arrives off the heels of his recent performance at one of the first car raves in North America last month in Houston, TX. New tracks “Bring It Back” with DirtySnatcha and “Buck” featuring Bok Nero each integrate elements of dubstep and trap, complete with grimy, heavy bass, and serrating mechanical synths. “Ultimate” is a heavy-hitting collaboration with basketball legend DIESEL (aka Shaquille O’Neal) and viral Houston rapper T-Wayne. “Narcos” with Madreckless contains the pulsating tempo of psytrance fused with bass elements. “Save You” sees Riot Ten team up with Whales and his cousin Megan Stokes for a rich, future bass original, showcasing a softer side to his sound. As a special treat, he closes the EP with VIP renditions of “Save You” and “Rail Breaker,” the latter of which remains a fan favorite around the world, boasting over 7 million on-demand streams. Wielding plenty of chaotic bass nuances, the EP lives in the same “Hype or Die” underworld, but with a heightened sense of urgency. “I wanted to create something that was different from my previous bodies of work, yet still embodied that “Hype Or Die” aura. I named my EP ‘Emergence,’ due to the chaos in the world now coming to light. It is symbolic of how many have felt for some time now..and so we have risen. I stand in solidarity with those fighting injustice.” - Riot Ten

Tricky announces his 14th studio album, Fall To Pieces, out September 4th on his own label False Idols, and shares its lead single, ‘Fall Please.’ The legendary producer might be over three decades deep into his music career but he’s currently on an especially prolific run. In the last year, he dropped the enchanting ‘20,20’ EP and put out an acclaimed autobiography, ‘Hell Is Round The Corner.’ ‘Fall Please’, a song which Tricky likens to Washington DC Go-go, has a strange and twisted accessibility that surprised even the man who wrote it. “With most of my stuff, there’s nothing else like it around”, he says. “But with ‘Fall Please’ I’ve managed to do something I’ve never been able to before, which is that everyone can feel it - even people who don’t know my music. It’s my version of pop music, the closest I’ve got to making pop.” ‘Fall To Pieces’ was recorded in Tricky’s Berlin studio in late 2019. Tricky is keen to point out that the tracks on the record can be deceptive; often short, ending abruptly and moving on to the next without warning. Although instrumentation varies from bursts of tense synths, distorted dial tones, and samples, the song’s lyrics can be dark and dense. Tricky’s music has always enlisted female vocalists to carry his ideas: the majority of tracks on ‘Fall To Pieces’, including ‘Fall Please’ rely on Marta Złakowska, the singer he discovered during a European tour when he was left without a vocalist on the opening night. She saved the tour from disaster. “I can tell when someone is humble and down to earth,” says Tricky. “Marta doesn’t care about being famous, she just wants to sing.” The past year in creative flurry has no doubt been a distraction for Tricky, but it’s also been a period of reflection and reassessment. Struck down with grief, he had to ask himself a question: do I fight, or go down with the ship? “You’ve gotta fucking get up and fight,” he concludes. “Right now I’m in fight mode. And I feel really good. I do.” “Fall To Pieces” releases on September 4, 2020 via False Idols.

SHAY DE CASTRO !"
W
ith the sheer oversaturation of DJs and producers today, it’s rare to see a new artist who is something unique. Shay de Castro isn’t just a breath of fresh air, but rather one of those gusts of wind that knocks you off your feet. The young producer and DJ grew up
in the United States, living in some of the best cities for techno music. Playing the guitar and listening to grunge rock since she was a child had a huge influence on her sound today, always making sure to have that “dark” ingredient thrown into the mix. However, it was during her time in the culture-rich Los Angeles, California and Guadalajara, Mexico that took her productions to the next level, mixing her booming, driving aesthetic with deep melodies. 2018 was a big year for Shay, signing to some of the biggest techno labels in the world, such as Funk’N Deep, Unity Records, Frequenza, and Renesanz. As a performer, she’ll take you on a journey you didn’t even know you wanted to go on. Swelling melodies contrast deep kicks, creating a soundscape made to transport you into a different dimension. No set is ever the same, but each is made up of mostly unreleased tracks, combined with older, more obscure selections to create a unique experience each time she performs. Combine that with her infectious energy and ear-to-ear smiles, and you have the Shay de Castro experience. Shay De Castro makes her label debut on Spartaque’s CODEX Recordings, with her ‘Assembly’ EP set for release on June 5th. The talented techno upstart has seen exponential success as of late, receiving support from the upper echelon of touring DJs including Amelie Lens, Enrico Sangiuliano, UMEK, POPOF & more. Shay De Castro has made her mark on a variety of discerning labels, with monumental releases on Napoli’s Prospect Records, Amsterdam’s Bitten, Treviso’s Frequenza Records, and now Barcelona’s CODEX Recordings. Having toured the world prior to our current collective catastrophe, the US native shared the stage with the likes of Deborah De Luca and Spektre, igniting crowds with her unique brand of trance-laced techno. With a penchant for uplifting builds and punishing breakdowns, the ‘Assembly’ EP showcases De Castro’s versatility. Opening with the ominous titular track, ‘Assembly’, the listener is taken on a soaring journey, peaking with ‘Incendium’, an unapologetically synth-heavy number, and closing with the pulsating track, ‘She Reigns.’ Fellow DJs can order the extended edits on Beatport. Fans can expect to hear much more from Shay De Castro, with a slew of releases slated for the upcoming months across an ever-diversifying array of labels. Follow her on her socials to stay up to date with her latest productions and eventual tour dates! —E.D. Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2020 | 35

APOSTOLOS ANGELIS"
A
postolos Angelis is an ElectronicClassical-Orchestral music composer, engineer and producer. His compositions are based in classical music but his sound is mainly electronic with organic feeling. When he was still in high school, Apostolos realized that music is a universal language and music creation for him was a unique, true and creative way to express imagination, thoughts and feelings. His passion for music led him to become an autodidact composer who doesn’t compose and orchestrate music on paper but in his mind without keeping notes. He has learned the art of music by hearing and even today he doesn’t know music notation. The composer was born in the province of Trikala in central Greece , close to the well known “Meteora” geological formations and “Theopetra Cave” (where one of the oldest known man-made structures on earth was recently discovered). When he finished school, he moved to Thessaloniki Northern Greece where he studied Environmental Engineering at Aristotle University. During these years he didn’t stay away from music and kept experimenting with composition and sound. After finishing his studies, he conceived and created his debut album “Hologram” which was a fusion of electronic and downtempo ambient music. In 2009, Apostolos and his brother Vasilis, who is also a composer and producer, launched the independent record label Apoapsis Records in order to release their own material including Apostolos’ debut album “Hologram” in October 2009. SInce then, he has released four (4) full length albums: “Phophecy of Heavens (2012);” “The Mad Genius (2013);” “Kinesis (2014)” and his most recent release “Coloring of Life (2020).” —E.D.

COSMO’S MIDNIGHT !"
C
osmo’s Midnight continues their sensational ride into the new decade, with their recent and glistening single “Yesteryear,” out via Black Butter Records. The track is infused with 70s pop and a drop of psychedelia, “Yesteryear” lends insight into the burgeoning confidence and trajectory of the twin duo as they continue to evolve from their roots as online-production powerhouses to world-class, multi-skilled live artists. Uplifting lyrics embrace a firm funk bass line and intelligent sonic designs, amplifying falsettos from Pat in his first lead vocal appearance since 2018’s “Polarised.” Laced with complexities and all the sweets from their unmatched style, the track steps forth as their most self-affirming release yet, all the while basking in a moment of nostalgia. “‘Yesteryear’ is a song reflecting back on the years past, the unchanging feelings of youth, growing up and contemplating the future. We tried to blend these feelings into the production by drawing inspiration from older pop records as well some more progressive records. Although it seems a lot of thought went into it, ‘Yesteryear’ came about really quickly and naturally.” Cosmo’s Midnight kicked off 2020 by making their debut in triple j’s highly coveted Hottest 100 countdown with the floor-shaking “C.U.D.I (Can U Dig It)”. The release of “Down For You” with global pop phenomenon Ruel shortly followed, which has since seen over 11 million streams/views to date, strong global playlisting support, a premiere and addition on triple j. 2019 was equally monumental for the duo, with performances at Splendour in the Grass, Australia wide festival tours of St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival and Listen Out, and soldout headline shows in the US, Asia and major Australian venues on a national tour. —E.D. agdalena’s eyes were opened to the world of electronic music when she was just 15 years old, when her older brother snuck her into a club for the very first time. Having grown up with the musical influences of her native rural Yugoslavia as a child and later, as a teen, metropolitan Hamburg, the field of electronic music was an exciting discovery for her. Being a perfectionist, she waited until 2016 to release her debut track – “Should I Stay” on the 10 Years Diynamic Anniversary compilation – and until 2017 to release her first full length EP, “Morphosfalter” on Anja Schneider’s Leena Music imprint. Following a number of remixes (most notably Moby’s “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad”) Magdalena released her first EP on Diynamic, “Elementum’” in the spring of 2018. The lead track “Mountains of Es Cubells” would go on to define Magdalena’s landmark Ibiza 2018 season; after having played on the island and hosted her own show on Ibiza Sonica, she was able to launch her very own branded weekly residency (SHADOWS) in Ibiza. With releases spanning a host of esteemed labels from Anjunadeep, Diynamic, Knee Deep In Sound and many more, Magdalena continues to re-affirm herself as one of the underground’s most innovative names. From working alongside Solomun and Adriano Trolio to open the Hamburg venue EGO, to inviting industry heavy-weights Miss Kittin, Anja Schneider, Nicole Moudaber just to name a few, to her SHADOWS event series at Ibiza’s Cova Santa and with the unveiling her brand new remix of Brlee’s “Visions,” Magdalena will continue her unstoppable trajectory across the new decade. —E.D.

30 YEAR JOURNEY THE
JOHN MURPH OF AN ACCLAIMED INDIE BEAT WRITER
John Murph has been called a “tastemaker’s tastemaker,” “a cultural custodian” and “one of the most creative minds working today in music journalism.” “Murph,” as he is affectionately known by his friends and colleagues, began to chase his journalism dream while attending Mississippi State University in the early 1990’s. Since then, his first-rate takes and words on culture and music reach an international audience via influential and national media outlets such as The Washington City Paper, The Atlantic Monthly, NPR Music, The Washington Post, JazzTimes, Downbeat and Tidal among others. Over the years, my path and John’s path has crossed more than once. In my early days working in record stores, John was a frequent shopper in the store I managed. A couple of years later, our paths crossed again, this time at the offices of JazzTimes Magazine. Then I saw and read a piece he contributed to Tidal.com about Larry Heard and the iconic discotheque Paradise Garage. Seemed like the perfect opportunity to reconnect with John. Happy that I did. Written & Interviewed by Joseph Wensell Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2020 | 47
Where, when, and how did you begin your career as a music journalist? JM: I started my writing career as a music journalist during my sophomore year at Mississippi State University. I started writing LP reviews (mostly jazz) for the school’s weekly newspaper, The Reflector. Later in college, I started writing for the campus’ monthly magazine, The Prism. I made my way from Mississippi to Washington, D.C. through two consecutive paid internships at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. I was working on the Duke Ellington collection during the summers of 1989 and 1990. After finishing my bachelors, I decided to stay in Washington, D.C. to pursue a career in the arts. Thank God, I had strong mentors, who looked like me (meaning black) – Willard Jenkins, Rueben Jackson, Suzan Jenkins, Fitzroy Thomas, Spencer Crew, Anthony Brown and Marquette Folley – to help me navigate the worlds of the non-profit arts sector and jazz journalism. It took me a while to recognize that there weren’t too many young black people in jazz journalism. Eventually, I found a stronger voice as a journalist in the late 1990s when I started writing for The Washington City Paper (the arts editor, Brad McKee and managing editor David Carr were truly amazing and very supportive of my work), The Washington Blade (the editor Greg Varner, again, amazing). That led me to becoming a stringer for The Washington Post and contributor to more national outlets such as JazzTimes, Down Beat, VIBE, NPR Music, The Root, The Atlantic Monthly, and most recently, TIDAL. What is favorite music genre to cover and write about and why? JM: Well, many people associate my music journalism with jazz. And I will always take that as a badge of honor because I do love the music and how it’s continues to absorb other genres, remain contemporary and inform other idioms. The jazz world also contains many fascinating stories. For a long time, much of my writing is narrative focus. I love for strong, compelling, and possibly untold stories within the art forms to both highlight the art, itself, and bring out the human elements. That said, I grew up on funk and R&B; and I love writing about that music too as well as deep house, broken beat, and electronic music. I even enjoy writing about contemporary classical music, which is sometimes called new music. Are you listening to any electronic music these days? JM: Wow. Such a big question. I just got Ron Trent’s new single, “The Coming.” I’ve been re-exploring Kraftwerk. I’m loving the new Moodymann album, Taken Away. Other new electronic stuff I’m checking out includes Space Captain, Nikitch and Kuna Maze, Kamaal Williams,

Mark de Clive-Lowe, Jamael Dean, Sam Gendel, Emma Jean Thackray, and Likwid Continual Space Motion. With your love of Jazz music, do you hear any correlation or blending of styles with today’s contemporary electronic music scene? JM: Most certainly, everyone I’ve mentioned above exhibits strong jazz influences. They are either blending their electronic sounds with analog instrumentation, collaborating with jazz musicians, or channeling the rich history of jazz sonic explorers such as Sun Ra, Herbie Hancock, Patrice Rushen, the Mizell Brothers, Weather Report, Chick Corea, Azymuth, and Larry Young. Then you look at what some of the younger jazz musicians such as Shabaka Hutchins and his groups Son of Kemet are doing or Nubya Garcia, Joe ArmonJones, Angel Bat Dawid, Makaya McCraven, Ben Lamar Gay, Jaimie Branch, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Melanie Charles, Mausiki Scales, and Thundercat are doing. They are all negotiating with electronic music in serious fashions. And that’s just a few names I’m rolling off the top of my head. There are plenty more. Tell us about your side gig as a DJ and what is in your “crate?” JM: I started spinning as a radio DJ first – in the early 1990s on WPFW-FM (Pacifica) in Washington, D.C. There I had a Friday night weekly show between 7-9 p.m., where I would connect the dots between jazz and other musics such as hip-hop, soul, funk, drum-nbass, pop, etc. That became a boilerplate for how I DJ. I’m much more effective as a selector than say, a party rocker. And that’s the format I have when I host my radio shows at Eaton Hotel DC. In terms of club DJing, my first was in the late-90s in Washington, D.C. at Escandalo, which was this Latin gay club. There I played a lot of Afro-Latin jazz music. Much later I started spinning briefly at Marvin (also in Washington, D.C.) at some special gigs then briefly every Tuesday night. I would say that I was a reluctant DJ. I had peers such as Sam Burns, Adrian Loving, Jamil Hamilton, Rhome Anderson and Nabani Banks – all much better DJs than

I am – nudging me behind the decks. But I learned how to find my voice among them in the sense that they were looking for me to bring me to the decks instead of me trying to mimic what they did. In terms of “what’s in my crates?” That’s interchangeable. Tonight, I need to prepare for a livestreaming vinyl-only DJ gig at Bump N’ Grind, this fantastic coffeeshop and record store in Silver Spring, Maryland. It’ll be a mixture of jazz, rare groove, disco, funk, etc. I start with one record at time. But at this moment, I have no idea what’s going to be in that crate until I start digging my own massive vinyl collection. What was the first electronic music album you purchased and why did you buy it? JM: Hmm, that’s such a fascinating question. I was –and still am – a huge Parliament-Funkadelic fan. And the stuff that Bernie Worrell and Junie Morrison were doing on keyboards was so far-out and advanced. I think they deserve their places when it comes to talking about electronic music – the same goes for Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Patrice Rushen, Prince, Andre Cymone, Gene Harris, and others. But back to your question, I bought Zapp’s debut LP before I purchased Kraftwerk’s Computer World. Zapp was an extension of P-Funk. And again, it had its own innovations with Roger Troutman’s work on the talkbox. But it wasn’t considered electronic music in the same fashion as say Kraftwerk or the Yellow Magic Orchestra. I’ve always had a “what if” fantasy of Roger Troutman collaborating with Kraftwerk. So, Computer World would be considered my first “electronic” album. “Numbers/Computer World” was a huge hit in the black community, especially the backand-forth cultural exchanges the band had with hip-hop pioneers such as Afrika Bambaataa, Newcleus, and Twilight 22. If you were to choose five (5) albums deserving of a remix for the EDM community, which would those be, who would be you choices for producers and remixers? JM: Hmmm.
Mandré’s M3000 remixed by Moodymann, Herbie Hancock’s Manchild remixed by I.G. Culture, Joe Zawinul’s Harvest remixed by Ron Trent, Julian Preister’s Love, Love remixed by Mark de CliveLowe. What is the one piece of music journalism you are most proud of and why? JM: Hmmm. That’s a tough question. I tend to like the ones that spurred conversation and were quite scary to write --- in 2010 JazzTimes published my feature, “Rhapsody in Rainbow,” which explored how LGBTQ jazz artists were articulating themes of their sexual orientation through the music. I had people originally hating me for asking the question or exploring the realm. But a few years later, Philadelphia hosted the first – and sadly only – jazz festival that spotlighted LGBTQ jazz musicians. In your opinion, have the integrity of music journalism evolved or devolved with the advance of technology? JM: That’s a hard question. I think you can still find quality, thoughtful, and insightful music journalism today on various platforms. Also, you can read old articles from decades past and they seem quite lackluster. What are you most looking forward to when global events change for the better? JM: Hugging the shit out my friends. Dancing and sweating and not feeling worried about brushing against someone’s sweaty body. There’s something very sensual and visceral about touch that no virtual party can replace. I also miss traveling. I’m usually out of the country at least four times a year. Do you have any words of wisdom to share? JM: Words of wisdom? Be kind to yourself.

ON THE SLEEVE:
INTERVIEW BY LEO WEAVER
WESKA ON MUSIC, FOOD, EXTREME SPORTS AND MENTAL HEALTH Growing up in midtown Toronto, Weska was first attracted to what he and his friends called electronic music after hearing it used in the bike, skate, and ski/snowboard movies they watched. Artists like Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, and M83 buzzed through his speakers as Weska, then a talented mountain biker, snowboarder, and skater, watched the professionals stomp tricks to those enticing sounds. From there, his musical journey quickly brought him past extreme sports (though he still shreds from time to time) and into the more rarefied — and refined world — of what he later discovered as progressive house. By the time he was 16, Weska was focused on the music. His desire to create underlined his discovery, producing sounds through university and onward. He drew inspiration from the melodies from the likes of John Digweed, Steve Angello, and Eric Prydz. Although his sound hasn’t always remained the same, his mission has: to make people dance. First, for his friends at house parties, then in small clubs in the university town of Kingston, Ontario, and on to big rooms in Toronto, and then around the world. Fast forward to 2015, Weska saw his first support from Adam Beyer Live from Space Ibiza on his legendary Drumcode Radio. This was a breaking point for his career, his mindset completely switched, and nothing else mattered but making music. And it paid off - in early 2017 Weska received massive support from the legend himself Eric Prydz, leading him to open for Eric in Toronto, followed by an extended offer to join him at his Creamfields Steel Yard Epic 5.0. show in London later that year. A strong set generated an even bigger honor to play at Prydz’s Hi Ibiza Residency that summer. This proved to be only the beginning of his success in 2017 with releases on Suara, Kraftek, Odd Recordings and Tronic Records to name a few. A strong 2017 laid the groundwork for his 2018 debut on Sven Väth’s Cocoon Recordings with Kevin De Vries, and the most widely recognized techno compilation to date, Beyer’s A-Sides on Drumcode Records. Determined to cap off 2019 on a high note, Weska committed his “Polarize EP” with longtime friend and mentor Bart Skils to the techno juggernaut, Drumcode Records. He remains focused, ambitious, and humble on his journey through music, and looks to prove why he’s a name to watch as the next generation of electronic artists.

LW: Tell us a little bit about yourself and what drove you to making music your career choice. WESKA: I’ve been super into music ever since I could walk, from screaming The Lion King theme song at the TV to playing the piano through my adolescent life. Music is my ultimate passion and it wouldn’t feel right to me not making music my life. Even though it’s my passion, I love how it always provides new challenges and obstacles, and ways to improve. It’s never ending really, and that’s awesome. LW: Who are your musical influences and what do they mean to you? WESKA: I have a lot of influences because I love a lot of different types of music, and it’s ever changing. It’s really hard to choose just a couple but right now I would say one of them is Röyksopp. I’ve been rinsing Melody AM from 2001. The album is full of so many amazing songs, some just instrumentals, some beautiful vocals. It’s got everything. I’m also a huge fan of Kevin Parker of Tame Impala. His music really speaks to me, I really connected with Currents, and I love his new and unique take on the classic psychedelic rock sound. Of course, Eric Prydz - he’s been a motivator and influence to me since before I started making music. His genre crossing music never ceases to amaze me and he’s a super nice guy. Finally, I can’t forget Daft Punk, I feel that’s self-explanatory though. LW: With previous releases on iconic labels such as Cocoon, Drumcode, Odd Recordings and Suara, among several others, why did you decide to self release your latest EP? WESKA: I have a lot of music and I simply just wanted to

share it with the world. My ‘Wave’ series of releases is not a label, it’s just simply a platform that allows me to put my music out when I want to. It’s super fun and I’m stoked with all the feedback so far. LW: Back in February 2020, you shared with ChangeUnderground.com a very personal affliction with ADHD. Why was it important to you to express your experience dealing, coping, and turning it into a positive, creatively speaking? WESKA: I think it’s important to express your true colors from time to time. Some things are personal, of course, but I wanted to hopefully influence other people with something similar to not be afraid or ashamed of it. ADHD has been with me my entire life and it’s a part of me every day, and I just wanted to shed some light on it and maybe help other people deal with it too. LW: Early on prior to beginning your career as a music maker, your were listening to Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers and M83, among others. Choose one track from each of those acts that had the greatest impact on you and how their music makes you feel. WESKA: Daft Punk - Alive. One of my favorite tracks of all time. The mix and style still holds up to this day, and the most beautiful part about it is how simple it is. They are truly musical genius’ and were way ahead of their time. The entire Homework album is monumental for me, and I think dance music as a whole.
The Chemical Brothers - Enjoyed. When I was in my early teens I would listen to this song on my first

iPod, and I remember feeling intergalactic - like I was literally travelling through space. The synthesizer / club sound was new to me, and I love the huge filtered breakdown. I didn’t know it at the time, but this song was an early gateway for me to the long path of techno. M83 - Outro. It’s hard to choose one, Outro is a truly epic tune for me though and an entrance to the genius mind of Anthony Gonzalez. It’s incredibly overwhelming but magnificently ethereal at the same time. It’s hard not to cry some sort of tear, joyfully or sad, or feel some sort of butterfly somewhere. A true masterpiece. LW: When did you first realize that you were on the fast track for success with your music? WESKA: I’m not sure I’ve ever realized this but if I had to pick a moment it was probably when Adam Beyer first played my music and I heard it on Drumcode Radio. That was a big turning point for me mentally. LW: How did you end up in Berlin? Was it a career move that drove that decision? WESKA: I visited Berlin a few months before and thought it would be a sick place to live, so I moved a few months later ha ha. It was a pretty simple and quick decision and I’m happy I made the move. It’s not home forever but it’s a nice place for now. It was definitely career oriented, it’s a nice place to go out and it’s central Europe. I had just signed with a booking agency here and most of my gigs were in Europe, so it made sense to move. Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2020 | 57
LW: We understand that you are vegan. How long and do you prepare your meals from ‘scratch’ or do you follow recipes from cook books and what is your favorite meal? WESKA: One of my favorite things about being a vegan is how many delicious meals you can cook. I follow cookbooks to change it up sometimes but if you have a few different veggies, a protein, a grain, and a sauce, you can pretty much make anything! Favorite meal? Oooooof...probably protein pancakes or tacos. LW: Are you still active in extreme sporting? Who are your heroes and why? WESKA: Very active. I’ve been wakeboarding more recently just outside of Berlin and I try to skate all the time. When I can, I’ll snowboard in the winter, and I hope to move to Portugal for part of the year to surf as much as possible! These sports composed my life before music came around, except for surfing. Surfing was a more recent discovery. I don’t really have any sports heroes at the moment, I looked up to different snowboarders and skaters when I was younger, but if I had to pick one now maybe Kelly Slater? That might sound cliché but he’s so dialed in, determined, and driven, and there’s a reason why he’s still one of the best surfers in the world. His attitude and mentality can be admired from all ways of life, not just surfing. LW: What does the rest of 2020 look like for you, musically and personally? WESKA: Lots of music making, some camping, hopefully a bit of travelling, and lots of pancakes.

SOMNA, one of Canada’s leading Trance artists, has released music on the biggest trance labels in the world including Armada Music, Coldharbour Recordings, Garuda Music, Future Sound Of Egypt, AVA Recordings, Black Hole Recordings and Perfecto. He’s also a prolific multi-genre producer, engineer, and co-owner /A&R head of AVA Recordings, has a monthly radio show entitled “Reanimate Music” which broadcasts every second Monday on Afterhours.fm, the #1 trance radio station in the world. Right on time to dig in and discuss is Tim Stark who gets SOMNA detailing the release’s meaning, personally and musically.

“My sincere wish is darkest times and a co TS: Thanks for joining us Ben – we’re actually talking to you on ‘Beside You’s release day, so, naturally, congrats and guessing there’s no small amount of excitement in the air! How does it feel to have it out? SOMNA: “Hi guys! I’m doing well and just so excited for my first album that’s out today! It’s been a long journey to get here and I’m so happy it’s finally out! Also a bit nervous and hoping everyone loves it!” TS: You must be starting to get a first reaction from fans as to which tracks are standing out quickest. What vibes are you picking up there? SOMNA: “Hmm I think one of the most popular ones is the title track “Beside You” with Noire Lee. It appears to be one of the most popular ones from the album but what’s nice is seeing the love for each of the other tracks too. There isn’t a huge shift towards a certain song so I’m happy that there’s a track for everyone.” TS: You’ve been production-active for the better part of a decade now. Why have you bided time until now to release a long-player? SOMNA: “I suppose one of the biggest challenges (and something I’m still working on) was making sure my artist profile gained enough traction to warrant an album. It’d be a hard sell to get people to listen if they didn’t know who I was and to this day I’m still wondering if I’ve got a big enough profile to really propel the album to where it deserves. I did feel like it was the right time for my first album though after spending many years building up my name and I’m so grateful Black Hole Recordings felt the same way.”

s that this album can be like a light in your onstant companion that is always beside you.” —SOMNA
TS: How much of a challenge was it, both to get into the swing with it and to complete? SOMNA: “Surprisingly easy actually. I pretty much live and breathe “studio” so I just committed myself to working on the album and threw myself into it. In the endthere was 21 tracks for the album and one of the hardest tasks I had to do was figuring out which ones would make the cut.”
to be like but there are certainly many I hold in high regard and look up to as songwriters / producers and I’ll draw inspiration from. Andy Moor for example, his vocal manipulation techniques are legendary and I grew up as a producer inspired by what he did in tracks like “Faces” and “Fake Awake”.
TS: Which tracks from it did you find came together quickest and which one’s took the longer time to nail?
TS: Aside from producing music you’re also co-owner and A&R head for AVA, so we guess that a good deal of demo music finds its way to your ears. Does this additional role assist (perhaps perspective-wise) in anyway when working on your own music?
SOMNA: “I think all the tracks came together within a reasonable time, the vocalists and collaborators I worked with are amazing people and we get along so well. The ideas just flowed organically and aside from maybe “Moon & Back” which is a style that is different to what I normally make, the songs all formed pretty quickly. Mixing it down and doing the little tweaks took awhile though but the writing process was pretty fast!.”
SOMNA: “I certainly think having an inside look at how fans respond to certain releases and music helps me as a producer. It allows me to gain insight on what people seem to gravitate towards. There’s also good and bad in going through demos and while I don’t do as much A&R work these days (we have someone helping with that now), listening to so much fresh demo submissions can be an inspiring experience... but also sometimes a grueling process.”
TS: In your words, how – in general - would you describe the tone or feel of the album?
TS: How did you decide which tracks to singles-preface the release of the album with?
SOMNA: “I guess this is up to everyone’s interpretation, but the feeling I really want to create is a collection of music that evokes feelings and memories. Something that could be with you during the highs & lows and to comfort in tough times. That’s why it’s called “Beside You” and hopefully listeners will feel like the music is a “warm blanket” around you.”
SOMNA: “Many of the singles were picked because I was working with a well-known vocalist and the combined marketing efforts and strength of the track would contribute strongly to it being a single. Also keeping in mind which ones might be the most suited for a club environment.”
TS: Do you have an LP from an artist contemporary within the trance scene that you regard as peerless or faultless? One whose perfection you might seek to emulate with ‘Beside You’ perhaps? SOMNA: “There isn’t a single producer that I strive
TS: ‘Beside You’ is noticeably vocal-centric with next to no instrumentals on there. When artists go this route it tends to be for specific reasons. What are yours though? SOMNA: “Honestly I just love vocals and working with vocalists. It hits me right in the feels. Vocal trance is definitely my favorite!” Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2020 | 63
TS: What lies behind ‘Beside You’s title? Is this a reference to its producer / vocalist dynamic maybe? SOMNA: “I chose “Beside You” as the title for my album because I wanted the music to be something you could take around with you, comfort you and be next to you sharing in the highs and lows of life. I remember feeling lifted in sad times by music and I wanted my album to do the same for others. The title “Beside
You” felt fitting to convey that and I hope the listeners agree.” TS: Jennifer Rene is someone you’ve worked with over the longer time (the pair first recorded together in 2014 and have now have five co-productions on their shared discography). What is it in particular about her voice and songwriting skills that make the partnership so successful? SOMNA: “Jennifer is such a wonderful

human being and songwriter. I honestly got so lucky getting to work with her back in 2014. I think she was just coming out of a hiatus and I was introduced to her by her manager at the time (Shane Halcon) and it became the start of this wonderful collaborative partnership. As you say we’ve done 5 songs now and I absolutely adore working with her.” TS: You’ve also worked with some local, fellow Canadian talent on the album. Tell us
a little about them and how you connected with them to collaborate on it? SOMNA: “There are three vocalists on the album who are Canadian, Noire Lee, Michele C and Aloma Steele. They all live in Vancouver and are local to me and while I have worked with Noire and Michele on many occasions, I had the pleasure of working with Aloma for the first time. I wasn’t unfamiliar with Aloma’s work as she’s done some stuff on AVA

before and she’s super talented. Her vocal idea “Moon & Back” inspired me to try something a little bit different with the style and it’s become one of my favorites from the album. With Noire Lee and Michele C, I record them both in my studio so there’s also that wonderful dynamic of being able to collaborate in person with them, something that’s often missed when most collaborative pieces are done over the internet these days.” TS: HALIENE is someone whose profile has risen significantly of late. How did the two of you approach your first collab together? Was it for example a question of music or lyrics/song first? “I had been really wishing to work with HALIENE for some time now. She’s insanely talented and same with her husband Matthew Steeper (who I also did a track with on Armada). I finally plucked up the courage to ask her manager about doing something together and after discussing ideas and plans, “Secret” was born. In this case, they provided me with a piano and vocal topline they had written already so from there I wrote the instrumental to go around it”. TS: Completing the music for an album is of course only a way-marker on its road to ultimate release. How has the COVID-19 epidemic impacted the months between its completion and you putting it out?
66 | Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2020
“As far as Covid-19’s impact goes on the album release, it didn’t change anything about the release schedule or music plans. However what it did wreck havoc on was my album tour and show plans. That was very sad and disappointing to have to cancel as it was very much an important part of the album plan but at the end of the day, I’m healthy and able to continue making music and that’s what matters most. There are far more important things to worry about these days than not being on tour and I’m grateful to be able to work on music in these times. Hopefully someday I’ll be back on tour and can showcase some of this music around the world!” TS: Finally Ben, what does your gut tell you in terms of ‘the tricky second album’. Should we expect it in the short, medium or long term!!? “Truth be told, with the whole quarantine life happening right now, I’m actually a good 3/4 way finished a second album. I don’t know when is the best time to go forward with that and it’s definitely a discussion I plan on having with my manager but for now I’m focusing my energy as much as possible on my first album.” TS: Many thanks for talking to us and the very best for the album’s onwards journey! “Thank you for taking the time to chat with me and your support!”

‘Secret’,‘Long Way Down’,‘Stars Collide’and its limitlessly touching Noire Lee-sung HYPERLINK “https:// magikmuzik.complete.me/beside” released-today title single have all blazed a trail for it. The overture’s well and truly over though and it’s main event time: May 8 sees ‘Beside You’ - Somna’s first longplayer - make its big bid for 2020 glory. The first block-release collection from the DJ, producer & AVA Recordings co-owner has been one long sought by fans. Throughout his production lifetime, Somna’s always been in his element when working in synergy with singers and songwriters. That ‘beside you’ connection that can bring voice, message and extra dimensions to his studio creations. That dynamic’s reached a new apex through his debut album that - almost without exception - is built around the producer/singer simpatico. In pursuit of it Ben’s tapped the talents of many a remarkable songstress. Some he’s worked with previously (and one, notably, to an almost muselike degree), whereas others mark first time artist/ singer unions. There are those who Ben is essentially introducing to the electronic music scene, whilst others will already be known-names to ‘Beside You’s audience. Their single common denominator however is the ability to articulate Ben’s music into words and vocalise his innermost. Amongst the album’s coproduction coterie you’ll find the inimitable likes of
HALIENE, Jennifer Rene and Roxanne Emery – singers whose renown is already foundation deep in dance music. Newer-to-most names that Ben’s engaged for the album include gifted local talent like (fellow Canadians) Noire Lee and Emoiryah, and from those from further afield, including Sally Oh and BLÜ EYES. While trance runs true through ‘Beside You’s veins, stylistically it explores the genre to its furthest reaches. Indeed if the album had one hash above all others, it’d be #contrast. Through the likes of ‘Rebels’, ‘White Noise’, HALIENE collab ‘Secret’ and ‘Constant Fire’, high altitude uplifters arrive thick & fast. Offering a sharp distinction are those of a more melancholic beauty, not least the album’s title track and its former single ‘Long Way Down.’ Equally there’s also more pumping floor-minded fare - ‘Morse Code’, ‘Stars Collide’ and the LTN-paired ‘Dreamcatcher’ to pinpoint just three. On occasion the album also becomes simply more trance channelling, with cooler, more downtempo creations like ‘More’, ‘The First Year’ and ‘Moon & Back’ adding context. Of his motivations to write his first longplayer, Ben commented: “Beside You are two simple words that speak volumes. When I set out to write this, I really wanted to capture the emotions and feelings that encompass trance music to me - the warmth of that beautiful melody at the right time. Transporting us to a moment in our lives where you can remember
every little detail, the feelings, location and even the sights and smells. I remember, having moved across the world from Canada to the UK, travelling on the train between Bournemouth and Manchester on my own and feeling very alone. I would listen to a certain Oceanlab song and in that moment, everything would melt away and I felt peaceful. My sincere wish is that this album can be like a light in your darkest times and a constant companion that is always beside you.” To celebrate Somna’s ‘Beside You’ May 8 album release you can win an exclusive all-expenses-paid trip to a Somna event of choice. EASY McCOY RENEGADE POSITION MUSIC
For a over a decade, Seattle born rap artist Easy McCoy has been releasing some of the freshest hip-hop track in recent years. In my opinion good music is just good music. For me personally, it is all about how I feel when I hear a good song, no matter the classification or the genre. Case in point, the first time I listened to The Stone Roses self titled
across the world, being resigned to Work From Home, takes self-discipline. That’s a fact. We all, I’m certain, have had momentary lapses and have caught ourselves 6 hours deep into our favorite Netflix or Hulu program, me included. It was during one of those days on Hulu where I first learned about Easy McCoy. You see, his recent single
debut way back in 1989, it was music that instantly stuck and impactfully so. There were many other records that left similar impressions and I won’t go in to those, I’d rather focus on a recent discovery, “Renegade” by Easy McCoy. Just like many of you
“Rule The World” is featured in an Old Navy TV commercial that is running on the airwaves. Upon learning about the song and doing the proverbial Google search, the song’s official Youtube video link popped up. Checking it out a couple of days

REVIEWS ALBUMS later on Spotify, I was instantly hooked (again). The entire album.”Renegade” features eleven crafty songs of positivity, spiritual and selfempowerment. Kicking it all off is “Do You Know My Name.” The music is garguantuan, booming and climatic. “Legend Is Born” continues with massive sonic backgrounds leading to the third track in, “Overcome,” which spills over with a personal story of rising up, overcoming, and surviving, complimented by piano, strings, booming beats and a powerful chorus featuring vocalist Dita. Next up is “Born For This.” A real surprise! Harmonica, blues styled guitars, and spitting lyrics make this particular track completely unique and showcases Easy McCoy’s musical diversity. The lyrics rock too! Now we’re about at the half point. Slowing the pace a bit, “Wanted Man” reverts back to the opening tracks feel and theme. Track six, “Justice” is a song with a message that is certainly appropriate for the times we currently live in. Music wise, like the other tracks, simply put, powerful. Track seven, “Rule The World” is an instant attention grabber with a simple piano riff, a subtle bouncy bass beat, hot drums, electronics and perfectly placed percussion are the musical ingredients. The real highlights are the effortless and remarkably smooth vocals and a glorious chorus. As soon as the piano bit comes in, you are hooked and then the silky smooth vocals drop leading to a glorious sing-a-long chorus completing a recipe for an international smash hit! Easily, the best track on the LP. “I Am Legend” kicks in a with a epic piano melody, harmonious vocals, and marching drums delivered you in an anthemic style. Coming to the close of

“Renegade’ begins with climatic vesre and singing on “What’s my Name.” The track “Renegade” spells the meaning of the title all out, “revolution, evolution, make way, for renegade.” Awesome! The closing track is similar to “Born For This” in that it is a track that uniquely stands out, stylistically wise. Fast paced, exploding with great electronics and spit-fire vocals. “Renegade’” is 11 tracks deep that will leave you hitting repeat more than once. Throughout the songs flow with great melody hooks, high caliber musicianship, versitility and diversity. While the messages expressed in th songs are words of strength, positivity, social and poltical slants, the music is just as powerful. The entire album is rock solid with great songwriting, which is well thought out and composed with pristine and highly polished production values. Like I mentioned in the beginning of this review, I was first turned on to Easy McCoy through the licensing deal of “Rule The World’ for an Old Navy commercial. I was hooked right then, even if it was only a 30 second clip of the track. It had an immediate impact on my determination to search for the creator. It took a little time, but alas, I did find Easy McCoy, “Renegade” needs to be heard. Easy McCoy deserves to be recognized with a greater reach. With this new album, it just may happen. I for one am a new fan. I encourage you to take a moment and look him up. Learn and hear his music. REVIEWS ALBUMS He’s taken the “groundbreaking” term to new heights with stellar guest performances by JMan, Polly Yates, Pendulum’s Ben Verse. Highlights include the tracks: “All Seeing Eye” and“Junction.” The music crafting by Seven on “R-Evolution” is unparalled in the unique way he presents dubstep that is contemporary and cutting edge at the same time. Powerful, artistic, expansive, and low rumbling are just a few descriptives, but know that there is a lot of activity and expert song making going on behind the scenes.

Now, Eddy Seven has released his latest long-player, “R-Evolution” (Hatched). Get it? He’s decided to revert back to his groundbreaking formula that resulted in the LP that broke him out, “Evolution.”
76 | Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2020
It’s one thing to write a song, it’s entirely a different skill set that brings it to completion, which showcases and displays Eddy Seven’s mastery of the technology and instrumentation throughout the album. One thing is consistent with Eddy Seven and the music he creates. Quality and outside the mainstream imagination of what the dubstep sound can encapsulate and ultimately realizing that sound. It appears that while “R-Evolution” is a re-visit of sorts to Seven’s debut, it really is a bit more than that. It’s an album that showcases the artist’s natural progression in musical advancement and growth. Those that know his music will surely agree. With this release, Eddy Seven has unleashed his biggest body of work to date on one of the leading dubstep record labels, which has time and time again presented the very best of what the genre has to offer and this latest LP into its catalogue will reinforce this fact. —Leo Weaver

Mixed with driving and polished percussion that provides the fuel, making each track all the more powerful, generates an irresistible album of exciting textures. “ —Leo Weaver
