Audiofly, Pelagic Life And Rolex Titan Black Collaborate To Safeguard Our Oceans Globally we are producing nearly 800 million tons of plastic every year, and disposing 8 million tons of that into the oceans. More than 70% of our planet is covered by ocean, and yet only around 4% is protected. There is a growing urgency that things need to change.

Championing this movement is electronic duo Audiofly aka Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito. Having established a creative empire with two record labels and their Flying Circus global party brand, they are now collaborating with bespoke watch specialist Titan Black and the non-profit charity Pelagic Life to help protect the oceans. “This project has been over two years in the making and we are ecstatic it’s finally seeing the light of day. It means everything to work on a project that puts the safeguarding of our oceans at the forefront and might ultimately inspire other people to be more environmentally conscious. We live in an age where picking a cause that resonates with you has become of paramount importance. More importantly the process has made us much richer people with a wider perspective. Knowledge empowers you and we have experienced it first hand. We would love this project to have the same effect on the people we are presenting it to and ultimately cause a chain reaction across the scene.”— Audiofly Working together to create a limited edition watch, Audiofly and Titan Black will be donating 50% of the profit from each sale to the Pelagic Life Trust. Based in Mexico, Pelagic Life is a non-profit marine conservation trust set up to protect the biodiversity of the ocean. In 2011 they introduced The Open Ocean Safari, a safe and sustainable shark dive operation with the goal of preventing the local fisherman from killing the fauna of the deep blue, and enticing them with potentially higher income from sustainable shark diving tourism. They are also developing a special Sea Food app, which will help Mexican consumers choose sustainable and healthy seafood with local names and information. Launching their creation in style, the duo partnered with the Miami Edition Hotel hosting a dinner for thirty people during Miami Music Week and are at the forefront of tackling the plastic epidemic with their Stay Plastic Free campaign. IMS Legends Award 2018 Honors Visionary Electronic Music Act Underworld On May 23rd, the International Music Summit (IMS) recognised and paid tribute to an electronic music act that have helped write British dance music history and propelled the global electronic music scene; Underworld, true pioneers who have made an outstanding contribution to the genre. Previous recipients of this tribute include, Nile Rodgers, Fatboy Slim, Pete Tong, Sven Väth, Carl Cox, Space Ibiza founder Pepe Rosello and Ricardo Urgell founder of Pacha Ibiza and the worldwide Pacha Group. Underworld are a true one-off, at home headlining the world's biggest festivals and events, playing underground techno clubs and warehouses, sound-tracking theatre productions or taking over art galleries, disused shoe shops and Japanese department stores. Having cemented their place in the '90s underground techno scene, the group's definitive breakthrough came in 1996 when their timeless anthem "Born Slippy (Nuxx)" became the soundtrack of a generation after it was featured in the film Trainspotting. The success of that single catapulted the band from the underground into the heart of the mainstream. The following two decades saw them build on that success while never compromising; selling millions of albums, performing countless sold-out shows, providing scores to productions by Academy Award winning directors Anthony Minghella and Danny Boyle, exhibiting in galleries, and sound-tracking the Opening Ceremony to the London 2012 Olympic Games. The critical and commercial success of the band's Grammy nominated 2016 album "Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future" saw them headline stages at Coachella, Glastonbury and Summer Sonic. Fusing together elements of techno, dub, trance, Krautrock, drum 'n' bass, ambient house and even blues, the rave inspired and acid glazed duo are known for their prolific creativity and appetite for breaking fresh artistic ground at every opportunity.

[NEW MUSIC: PREVIEWS]

Crosstown Rebels celebrate their fifteenth year with their monumental 200th release. American DJ and producer Arthur Baker reunites with Rockers Revenge for the first time in thirty years. To complete the package, dance music heavyweights Francois K and Michael Mayer take on the remix duties. "On A Mission" is exactly that, "a mission of love, a mission of peace." The positive vocals hark back to those of early 90s house tracks, which created unity through music and clubbing. The rhythmic beat of the drum is determined, as percussive layers build and the vocals bleed into the synths. Francois K provides two variations of the track. His remix features more prominent drum beats driven by a growling bassline. On his rockers dub version, the bass is pulsating complimented by otherworldly synths. Up next is the Michael Mayer remix- a calmer take on the original with gentler synths and a whirring, throbbing bassline. “To be able to reconnect and rekindle the special collaborative connection I had with rockers revenge after a 30 year hiatus has been a incredibly inspiring experience. The song conveys that peace and love can still be obtained through music.” — Arthur Baker Created in 1982, Rockers Revenge was the brainchild of Arthur Baker and Donnie Calvin. Donnie provided lead vocals with Baker’s wife, Tina B, Dwight Hawkes and Adrienne Dupree Johnson on backing vocals. Their most prominent track, Walking On Sunshine, was a post-disco hit reaching #1 in the US dance charts and #4 in the UK charts. Three years ago Baker and Hawkes reconnected through social media with Baker sending through his original Mission idea. Baker is known for his work with hip hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Planet Patrol, and New Order whilst also remixing the Pet Shop Boys’ 1986 hit "In The Night ." Fast forward to 2018, the group performed a monumental live show at Get Lost Miami, and are currently in the studio working on new material. This Summer they will shoot a new documentary and perform live at various events. Stream it here.

DADA LIFE, the acclaimed Swedish headlining DJ duo of Olle Cornéer and Stefan Engblom, have released "OUR NATION," their first full-length album in six years on a wave of praise. The new 11-track LP has something to offer fans on the full-dance music spectrum; from hard-edged bangers like the album lead-off "Our Nation," to the softer, slightly orchestral accented album closer "Falling Backwards In Time," or the album’s first single, the uplifting and good-vibed electro-house "Higher Than The Sunday," mixed by Daft Punk collaborator Mick Guzauski. Naturally, the Press has embraced this new album and here's just a couple media outlets that have provided commentary on the LP. “Dada Life Soars ‘Higher Than the Sun’ With Positive, Feel-Good Groove…Dada Life have always loved to create their own world, and their latest track ‘Higher Than The Sun’ might be the duo’s grooviest universe yet. It’s a fun, uplifting electro-house tune that invites you to sip on some champagne rather than spray it in the air. It’s a cool, laid-back beat that will have you smiling in no time.” –Kat Bein, Billboard.com “Dada Life are enjoying a return to the front page of music outlets everywhere…’Do It Till Your Face Hurts’ is pure unadulterated electro, and man does it do the soul right. As the electro-house genre continues to blur with that of big room and progressive house, it is rare to hear a cut that is pure full-on electro. Luckily Dada Life have proven to be masters of the sound and have once again shown that they have their ear to the ground when it comes to knowing what fans want."–Erik Mahal, EDMSauce.com Stream it here.

Dutch DJ and producer Dannic has been in a rich vein of form recently, demonstrated by a standout start to 2018 with his reimagining of Silvio Ecomo’s classic track "In No Dip." This time he’s back, teaming up with Romanian superstar INNA, who provides upbeat vocals on "Stay." The timing is perfect for the track, as it provides a bright backdrop to the spring sunshine and banish the last of winter’s bite. After working with the techno-influenced Silvio Ecomo, Dannic again displays his diversity and open-mindedness to sound by enlisting the pop influences of INNA, best known for her worldwide chart-topping track "Hot," and the combination is a match made in heaven. Showing a lighter side, with tropical influences fused with his trademark groove and with vocals that are instantly memorable and supported by a luscious sound bed of piano in the breakdown, ensures this track is as suited to radio airplay as it is to Dannic’s longstanding club support. Already supported by the world’s biggest DJ’s, including Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and R3hab, and with fans clamoring for the release, it’s certain that "Stay" is destined to be heard across airwaves the world over, and is the ultimate soundtrack to usher in warmer climes. Harrison has been a name rising as a bonafide British artist, concocting music propelled by a cocktail of dance, electronica and radio-ready pop. After the huge inaugural release on his newly-minted Outlaw Records label, "Blinding My Vision" was described as "another true showcase of Harrison’s talents, both vocally and in production, and prove that he will continue to be an unstoppable force in the scene" by industry-leading outlets. The label head honcho and previous collaborator with some of the world’s greatest artists (Steve Aoki, David Guetta, Laidback Luke) shows that he is no one-trick pony. For his sophomore release on the imprint, Harrison welcomes back previous collaborator Dutch producer Kill The Buzz, after the success of "Once Upon A Time" on Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings that gained over 5.5 million streams and counting, he also ushers in up-andcoming independent British vocalist Leon Mallet, a name familiar as first cutting his teeth on the UK’s X Factor TV show watched by millions, as the collective trio each bringing together flair, unbridled talent and individuality on "2 White Lies." With a rising tropical drum beat, soaring vocals flecked with sunshine melodies and toplines that build before an edgy, distorted delivery, "2 White Lies" ushers in the Summer with a smorgasbord of infectious flavors; the track showcases that Harrison, and Outlaw along with its shining recruits no less, has true diversity as a brand that continues to build. The opening months of 2017 brought the release of Solarstone’s ". - - - -" album. Widely praised as a standalone item, its ultimate purpose was (and is) yet to be fully clarified. With one less dash, but an extra Morse dot, one album becomes two and with it another sizeable clue to its end game. From shocking pink, we go into the blue: so what’s changed and what’s maintained between the albums? One constant is that "2" is again made up of eight pieces of music, trading between instrumental compositions and vocal ones. As with all musical series worth their salt, continuity and balance is key. In regard to its overarching feel, "2" interlocks seamlessly with "1." That aspect in fact goes farther still - threads from Solarstone’s wider canon are picked up, with track arcs continued and open single loops resolved. The mark of a true artist, Rich progresses album matters in many ways, while ring-fencing the core elements of his musical culture. And yes, the ability to surprise and catch the listener unawares is still one of them. Thematic strands are drawn from numerous time periods, influences and disciplines - both musical and otherwise. Each is woven, with differing degrees of presence into the album’s fabric. Some stand totem tall. Others become apparent only over time. Each though provides micro-clues to what is undoubtedly now an album sequence. Tonally, the release also pushes the needle into what Rich classifies as “the second half of a Solarstone club night." The tempo receives a kick, prog-trance elements ebb, while uplift – both vocally, musically and spiritually – flows. Tracks of note include: Midsummer Nights, Shards, Thank You, I Want You Here and (Pt II). The dots are starting to get joined: one album has become two, 8 tracks, now 16 - a potential magnum opus is afoot. Buy it here.

Fresh for 2018 the ever pioneering Octave One bring us some brand new music for the new year. Using their much loved Random Noise Generation alias the duo dropped a double A-side on April 6th with the album release on April 27th. The first Random Noise Generation release was 'Falling In Dub' in 1991 and sounding just as fresh 27 years later "N2 The Enfinate" is a double A-side featuring a new single and a remake of "Rock My Soul" in the form of the "Reborn Vocal Remix." A retro energy has been explored in the title track "The EnFinate," running parallel to a more contemporary groove and rolling, marauding bassline. The second track on the package, "Rock My Soul" (Reborn Vocal Remix) starts with a strong intent and a weighty bassline paving the way for precise and bright chord stabs. The single is taken from the new album "Endustry," a full body of work encompassing 7 full length cuts. Something of a new take on their creative process the Burden brothers made most of this music on the road while they toured over the past year, using the country they were in at each time they recorded to influence and inspire each track. “We were tucked away in so many hotel rooms that we decided to make sure we brought enough extra equipment so that we could set up a true lab to create from country to country and make the grooves that we wanted to experiment with on the dance floor.” comments Lawrence. “'Alkaylze', more than any of tracks on this project, embraced the original spirit of Random Noise Generation in so much as the “machine” seemed to really guide the creative process.” Adds Lenny “Much of the foundation of the composition was very accidental, but inspirational, with various musical devices interpreting data in a very unexpected results. It actually came together quite quickly but things just fell into place so naturally.” After touring and making music for decades the spirit and essential energy of the craft is what keeps them eternally inspired to keep creating and touring the globe… ”Once it takes hold of you you can’t stop even if you wanted to” says the pair, and so "Endustry" is born. Extraordinary pieces of music have long stood in direct correlation to the physical surroundings that inspire them. When Oliver Koletzki and Niko Schwind packed up their Berlin studios last April to spend a month locked away in a cottage nestled in the stunning nature of Cape Town's Noordhoek area before heading to AfrikaBurn, little did they know that its long beaches, dramatic mountain views and the heritage of its indigenous people would have such a profound effect on the club-ready sound they had championed with a string of EPs and live-performances since 2015. The result of four weeks of geo-cultural stimuli and creative experimentation culminated in the album Noordhoek, released in May 2018 on Stil vor Talent. "Niko and I travelled to South Africa with our studio for a month last year to write music – and we had the time of our lives. Listening to the album, I think you'll be able to hear just how incredible an experience the trip was for us" says Oliver Koletzki. While the productions on "Noordhoek" display the same on-point sound design of previous Oliver Koletzki and Niko Schwind releases, the impressive emotional depth and electronic floor-focus of its twelve tracks effortlessly merge with complex rhythmic textures to form a contemporary narrative on ancient dance rituals. "Early Pearl," the album's opener, unfolds with a disorienting build-up of vocal loops and synth swooshes, eventually dropping into a swinging groove that leads to "Subati." Here, clanking percussion is interspersed with polyrhythmic bongo rolls, before a chugging beat drives the arrangement towards a climax of African chants. "Olura" then presents itself as a tripped-out, cinematic ride through a nightmarish landscape until its metallic march is lit up by a crystalclear melody. Stream it here.

Jules & Jim is a creative gang made of DJs, performers, and producers gathered together by the godfathers of Electro Swing, Bart & Baker. Dedicated to quality House, they represent the “Nouvelle Vague” of House Music, a genre born before they came into this world. The reference to the François Truffaut movie "Jules&Jim" is obvious, the movie set around the time of World War I, and describing a tragic and daring love triangle involving a French bohemian and a shy Austrian who share their love with a free spirited French girl. So... freedom, creativity and love of good House music are the three pillars that underpin Jules & Jim's works. Having already released 3 EPs, propelled the duo to worlwide critical acclaim through massive support from fellow DJs Claptone, Après, Dennis Ferrer, Cassius, Carl Craig, Sonny Fodera, Martin Solveig, Lost Frequencies, Gregor Salto, Vanilla Ace and Sam Feldt. Their latest track "BAG" was master-mixed by Nervous Records rising star Mark Lower, and has already hit the Top 5 of Traxsource. They have also mixed the latest FG Radio 100 hits selection with an inspired selection of remixed classics and future house tracks. Jules & Jim debut album "YESTODAY " is out now via Wagram Music. Mercury KX have announced the release of Floex & Tom Hodge’s collaborative album "A Portrait Of John Doe." Due on June 29th, the album will be preceded by a series of EPs, the first of which – the "Wednesday (Is The New Friday)" EP – was released on April 20th. "A Portrait Of John Doe" sees Floex (aka Tomas Dvorak, the Czech clarinetist, composer, producer and multimedia artist from Prague), and London-based Hodge (the British composer, pianist, and clarinetist, who recently scored McMafia), bring together classical and radical “avant-garde” electronic music. The pair, who’ve previously worked with Max Cooper (Remnants), began work on the album after meeting at the Berlin festival in 2014, the project has taken three years to complete and saw the pair work together with the Prague Radio Symphonic Orchestra (PRSO) to bring the music and their arrangements to life. "Wednesday (Is The New Friday)" is the first piece of music to be revealed from the album. The original is accompanied by a remix from Hidden Orchestra (who Floex recently remixed), which further explores the electronic music dynamic created by Floex and Hodge. Floex & Tom Hodge said: “We are looking for universal human stories, things that connect us. This is neither an apocalyptic or wildly optimistic vision, the album subject for ‘A Portrait Of John Doe’ is rather a search for modern human values. The theme of the album turns our attention to everyday moments of our lives, as a certain counterbalance to the unceasing pursuit of efficiency, singularity and uniqueness that is so characteristic of today's times. “ "A Portrait Of John Doe." will be available on June 29th.

^L_ (Luis Fernando) released his debut album "Love Is Hell" on Antime in 2014 and he now returns with a more dance floor-originating offering on the Berlinbased imprint titled "The Outsider." From the slamming 90s-style Techno belter "She Only Loves Me Because She Does Not Live With Me" to the eerie Techno/House hybrid "I'm Richard Clayderman" along with the hard-hitting break beats on "Phil Spector" and the locked-in "Syndrom," the allusions to 2-step heyday on the EP's closer "Too Weird To Live Too High To Die," and last but not least the uncanny title track "The Outsider" sample-heavy aesthetics are distinctive as they are cohesive. While "Love Is Hell" reflected an emotional low point for Luis Fernando, "The Outsider" was informed mainly by nihilism, expressing both Fernando's disgust with religion and the deeply rooted social inequalities which came with it. However, like "Love Is Hell," "The Outsider" takes its cues not only from music, but also from external reference points, notably literature. The underlying topic forms the narrative of "The Outsider" which knits the already consistent EP even more tightly together and expresso is by no other than the late David Foster Wallace. While the excerpt brief from Wallace's ground-breaking speech "This Is Water" is literally outspoken about the EP's concept, other tracks also hint at the underlying theme of social and personal alienation by referring to famous misfits like Phil Spector and Richard Clayderman. Wait, Richard Clayderman? "Yup", says Fernando dryly. "It must be pretty hard being Richard Clayderman, after all." Buy it here.

Seven years in the waiting, nearly three in the making and a testament to music’s spiritual capacity to heal, "No Boundaries" arrives this May. Musically, its creator Roger Shah is a man with a considerable amount to say and a tireless amount of studio energy to do it with. Albumwise however it’s not often he does it under his own name. Given the wealth of his output, "No Boundaries" - surprisingly perhaps - is the first Roger Shah long-player to see the light since "Openminded?!" back in 2011. Even for studioholics like Roger, albums don’t happen overnight. "No Boundaries" process came together at a more measured pace than any of his projects before it. Though its production took place during a period of personal loss for Roger (with the passing of his mother), this was as much down to the album’s range & scope. It took the better part of 3 years for its 30 tracks on 2 Discs to be completed and drawn together. A frankly massive contingent by any longplaying standards, "No Boundaries" features a comparably impressive ensemble of singers, songwriters and other artistic partnerships. Moya Brennan, JES, Carla Werner, Natalie Gioia, Jennifer Rene and Susana are just some of the names marshaled to its starry vocal cast. Alongside them Roger’s rejoined by singers whose tones have become all-but synonymous with his work. "No Boundaries" sees the return of regular Shah players such as Yoav, LeiLani, Inger Hansen, Zara Taylor and Adrina Thorpe. As singers, so producer team-ups abound. Aly & Fila, Sied van Riel, Stoneface & Terminal, RAM and Feel are just some of the fellow studio-heads who’ve rallied to "No Boundaries" creation. On it’s road to release, Roger said of the new album “my idea was to create a unique journey for the listener to take. Its production has certainly been that for me. Working on it over the longer time period has been an experience as different as it’s been hindsight revealing. When I listen to each individual song, I can really hear what I was going through whilst making it. It’s wonderful to now be able to experience them all together, collected in this album form. I have dedicated this album to my beloved mom, who very sadly never got to hear it in its final form. I’ll always be grateful though that she had the chance to listen to it at least in part." [BUZZ WORTHY] FRANCISCO ALLENDES

Written by CATHERINE STRICKLAND

F

rancisco Allendes has music in his DNA. At the age of 9, his parents bought him a violin and for 8 years he trained and perfected his craft leading him to performing in Chamber Orchestras and Folk groups in his homeland of Chile. By the time he reached early adulthood, he discovered Progressive Rock and synthesizers and it did not take long for the aspiring musician to begin producing his own music and embark on the skilled art of DJing. By 2005, Allendes made the journey to Zaragoza, Spain and immediately formed a friendship with the prolific DJ and producer Iñigo Oruézabal. Shortly thereafter, he began releasing projects for the labels Immigrant, Catwash and Paradigm among others in addition to immersing himself in the local club scene. Returning to Chile in 2007, a new chapter opened for the developing producer. Working with his longtime friend Marcelo Rosselot, Andes Records was born not only as a outlet for his own music, but also a platform to launch the careers of many South American Djs and producers. Shortly thereafter, a breakthrough single in collaboration with Alexi Delano titled "El Coleccionista de Piedras" on Matthew Dear’s Spectral Sound label established him as a major player within the flourishing tech house scene. It did not take long for Allendes to fully realize his true identity as a producer. He made his mark by developing a unique style of tech house and vigorous dance with Afro-Latin influences. He wrote multiple successful tracks that caught the attention of many international and iconic DJs and in 2009 Allendes was booked on the Fiebre Amarilla World Tour, playing clubs in Japan, the Netherlands, USA, Spain, France, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay. This tour opportunity placed him in the spotlight of the international industry. In 2010, Francisco made the move to Ibiza and landed a residency at Ushuaia Beach Club, released a smash hit with “Esa Nena Quiere” which led to future residencies for Sven Vath’s Cocoon label at Tipic Club, and multiple bookings with the collective known as ANTS. Now, his catalogue of releases include projects for Desolat, Mood, Be As One, Crosstown Rebels, Underground Music and Snatch. Never one to rest on his laurels, and In Francisco’s own words “music has always been part of my life – I have never done or wanted to do anything but music, and I can´t imagine a day when I wasn´t doing something music related.”

[BUZZ WORTHY] LYDMOR

Written by JOSEPH ARTHUR

J

enny Rossander, also known as Lydmor, is a Copenhagen based producer, composer, singer, writer and according to her official Biography One Sheet, a "general troublemaker." Lydmor is also known as being an eccentric and fearless artist building her reputation through high-energy performances, songs about sex, drugs, romance and emotions, all of which are brilliantly displayed upon a musical canvas of powerful vocals, pumping beats and dreamy synth soundscapes. To date, Lydmor has released two albums—2012’s "A Pile Of Empty Tapes" and 2015’s "Y" both released only in Denmark and a recent single "Helium High" with her duo project Lydmor & Bon Homme. Now the stage is set for her upcoming internationally released album "I Told You I’d Tell Them Our Story" scheduled for a late September 2018 release via HFN Music. The back-story goes Lydmor spent several months living in Shanghai with the city serving as the driving force of inspiration for the new LP. This new album is hyped as electronic pop based on experiences while living in the super modern metropolis. The first single from "I Told You I’d Tell Them Our Story" is "Money Towers." Released in late February 2018, the track gives clear insight into the concept of the new album. It features club vibes, reflective introspection, melodically captivating synth-stabs, exotic drum programming and Lydmor's descriptive lyrics, all of which capture the song's ambiguous nature. Lydmor explains, “In the song I describe the feeling of roaming about in Shanghai and observing, and to some degree, being blinded by the material wealth symbolized in the imposing skyscrapers. The song also has a more sinister tone, considering that it deals with meeting new people while you're in a state of disillusion.” Leading up to the release of "I Told You I’d Tell Them Our Story," Lydmor is currently working with International Talent Booking on setting up a tour. Watch for her to stop in a city near you and be sure to pick up the new LP as well.

[BUZZ WORTHY] MARC ROMBOY

aving a well-rounded listening experience enhances the creative process. German DJ and producer Marc Romboy is a prime example of such a person. If you delve into his Facebook profile, you’ll see a wide range of musical influences ranging from Kiss, The Sisters of Mercy and the Stray Cats to

Stanley Clarke, Jan Gabarek, Level 42, The Pogues, Chic, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, Kraftwerk, New Order, Whodini and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. Just imagine sitting down with Marc and having a conversation about these iconic bands and artists and how each has played a part in the music he produces in today’s EDM scene. As a music lover, I could see it going on for hours. For twenty plus years, Romboy has been making soulful electronic music for just a handful of select labels such as Ovum, Kompakt 20:20 Vision and his own Systematic Recordings, his home for the last 14 years and his brand label Hyperharmonic. Debuting in 2006 with the seminal record “Gemini” and evolving musically over several more releases to 2017’s pure electronica and classical hybrid LP "Voyage de la Planète," solidly showcases his deep respect for all music styles and genres. Over the last year, we’ve seen a trend of electronic music being backed by symphony orchestras with the groundbreaking releases from deadmau5, Alex Christensen and here I must include Romboy’s 2017 live recording “Reconstructing Debussy” with the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra in collaboration with Boiler Room. Where has Marc performed? Virtually everywhere. From Fabric to Berghain, Tokyo’s Womb to NYC’s Output and Paris’ Rex are just a few of high profile venues he has performed in, and let’s not forget his dates at the world’s biggest festivals over the last twenty years. Marc Romboy’s deep knowledge of music makes it clear why this artist is able to take electronic music to new and exciting directions. Even so, the artist admits, “I feel like there are still a couple of beautiful sounds to create.” Marc, we are looking forward to what you come up with.

[BUZZ WORTHY] NICOLAS HAELG

Written by CATHERINE STRICKLAND

S

ix years of formal piano education, self-taught on guitar, the purchase of his first digital audio Workstation through a redeemed coupon. These are the first rungs on the ladder of success that Swedish DJ and producer Nicolas Haelg has surpassed. Early on, he became a master of sampling and broken beats, which provided an easy transition to full composition production. By 2015 Nicolas began releasing his music through Holland’s The Bearded Man, France’s Crosswalk and a few other small independent labels. Two years forward, Nicolas has amassed a huge international following in the millions thanks to his original tracks, remix projects for Izzy Bizu, Sway, Blossoms, Gareth Emery and Honne plus podcasts, including his recently launched online radio program Good Vibrations. Relying on his sharp and keen ear for Deep House and Dance oriented detail and melodies driven by high energy rhythms have resulted in past and present projects for the big 3 Music Distribution companies of Universal, Sony and Warner, as well as producing music for major indie labels Ultra and Armada. He burst on to the scene with the release of “Something Good” which would go on to be named as an “Essential Tune” by the renowned tastemaker Pete Tong, as well as the BBC Radio One’s “Song of the Day” pick. What followed next was the announcement as Swiss Night Life’s "Best Newcomer" recipient. Nicolas has supported David Guetta, Alan Walker and Alle Farben on the international tour circuit presenting his music and DJ skills to countless dance music fans. Most recently, musically speaking, a big time collaboration production with Israel’s rising talent Sam Halabi and Singer Songwriter Ezee “Fight For Your Love,” “We Get High Together” featuring Tyler Sjöström “Mind Games,” “Something Good,” “Gone” and “From The Stars To You” are must hear tracks that demand your attention. Traits that include ambition, determination, boundless talent and a likeable, cosmopolitan personality make Nicolas an authentic “Buzz Worthy” artist to watch out for.

[BUZZ WORTHY] NØLAH

Written by JOSEPH ARTHUR

N

ølah’s beginnings in music started at age of 7, studying classical music then moving in to the rock idiom as a guitarist and composer. These experiences have served her well as core learning lessons in the development of the music she produces today, albiet in an entirely different genre. Originally from Lleida

in the northern region of Catalonia, Nølah now calls Barcelona home and is ground zero where she conceives and composes her electronic musical gems. Hypnotic and warm melodies, booming bass lines and kick ass beats are the core ingredients that you’ll find on her recordings and are a reflection of her newly found love for uplifting techno. Year 2017 marked a “breaking out” of sorts for Nølah with upwards of a dozen releases across multiple genres including Techno, Progressive House, Deep House, Tech House, Electronica and Downtempo. This demonstrates her remarkable ability to create songs that are designed to reach a wide range of electronic music enthusiasts. Remarkably, her very first track “Fedra” on Parquet Recordings peaked at #30 on Beatport’s Top 100 Progressive Chart, which one can easily assume opened the doors to releases and projects for Click Records, Tulipa Recordings, Hopeless/ Submarine Vibes, Ante Records and Wasabi Recordings. Not limiting herself to simply composing original songs, she has also reworked tracks with her stellar remixes with and for Shosho, Peppou, Mark Brainford, Apollo’s Messengers and EKDK. A key moment in her budding career came byway a live performance, seen by 500,000 viewers, for Pont Du Gard broadcast through the French TV Channel Cercle. With bookings at some of Europe’s best known clubs and venues such as Wanderlust (Paris), Ritter Butzke (Berlin), Hypnos Hall (Istanbul), Kite (Ankara), Ibiza Beach Festival (Belgium), La Terrrazza (Barcelona), and City Hall (Barcelona) to mention a few, coupled with her short list of releases, Nølah has attracted the attention of electronic dance music fans as well as industry insiders and power players. As 2017 proved to be a fruitful year, will 2018 be a continuation of more great musical productions and a busier performance schedule? One can hope so.

[LABEL WATCH]

Founded towards the end of 2011, Kaiserdisco’s KD Music imprint came to life after three years of increasing dancefloor dominance through the partnership of Patrick Buck and Frederic Berger. For this issue's Label Watch Column, we layout 10 topics for a Q&A back and forth with Patrick and Frederic, shining more light on their inner workings, their labels' missions and more.

By LEO WEAVER

76 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13

Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13 | 77

What is your “mantra/mission” for both labels? We always ask ourselves the same question when we are listening to demos. I guess it would be: Would we play it and would we buy it? What are the differences between the two labels? When we started KD Music end of 2011, we wanted to present a mixture of cool tech house and groovy techno, which was that kind of sound that we played at the time. But our sound has changed a bit over the last 4 years and became a bit harder and raw. That’s why we decided to start KD RAW. So today, we are looking for cool Tech-House with a touch of Techno for our label KD Music and some raw twisted techno for KD RAW. What would you say are the difficulties or obstacles in operating an independent label in today’s electronic dance music environment? There are many obstacles. You need to know a lot of people in the business. You need to spend money for press agencies and promotion platforms that can help get you the content you need for each release, so that the distributors like Beatport, Traxsource and so on give you the feature on their websites. The difficulties is that everyone is doing the same, it's a bit like playing the lottery in a way, as you are never sure of whether a release that you might really love is going to be successful, no matter how much time, energy or money you put into it. How to does Kaiser Music and Kaiser Raw select it’s artists to release? Usually we check all the demos that artists send to us, and when we find a good one we like, we’ll reach out to the artist and talk about which label we think it fits best for a release. Once all in order and both parties are happy, we sent out the contract and get to work. We also ask artists that we really like to send us their new stuff they are working on, so we can pick out anything that we like. It's nice to be able to offer a platform for new artists and help them release some of their music. So, as you can see its more about selecting good music, instead of specific artists. “Pirated” music is at an all-time high. How are you, as label owners and recording artists, combating this? We have hired an agency that are trying to take down all the illegal links but at the end of the day, you can only really look to find a way of working with them, as unfortunately it’s not always that easy to put an end to it.

78 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13

Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13 | 79

80 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13

How do you support the artists on your roster(s) to ensure success in sales, terrestrial and digital radio airplay and performance opportunities? Of course, we play the tracks in our sets when on the road, and also chart support is a must for us, as it helps spread the word on a new release. We also have a monthly radio show which is broadcast on over 60 radio stations all over the world, so that's a good way to introduce new music to a larger market. Both labels also have a proper DJ promotion service which includes a lot of radio stations and clubs too. Feedback on these is important and useful for both label and artists. We push a lot of media platforms and socials, sometimes with the help of our PR agency. How to see the music label business model evolving, currently and into the future? The whole business is changing at the moment. When we started everything was about selling music and now it is more and more about streaming music. Especially with younger people not being interested in owning music these days, and they are more willing to pay a monthly fee to have access to stream music wherever they are online. So now and in the future, is it getting more and more important to be more visible and available via all streaming platforms, not forgetting the playlists too – they can bring huge potential to a release when featured on the right ones. Typically, how many releases do you project to put out in the marketplace annually? We do try to have one release out every month on KD Raw and then another on KD Music, but that's not always the case. Sometimes we have a break and there maybe a month when we do not release anything, due to not having the right tracks. In our opinion it's a better decision to have nothing out instead of something you don't really believe in. What are you most excited about for your label(s) in 2018 and beyond? We signed a couple of really nice tracks for 2018 already and after our own EP, ‘Hybrid Animals,’ which came out in March, we just released a great three-track EP by an artist called Fractious. We also decided to release out own productions primarily on our own imprints, again to push the label a little more but to also reach out goal and to tour and organise our own label branded showcases in the future. What advice would you give to an artist/producer with aspirations of starting an independent record label, based on your experiences, successes and failures? Our advice is to not get into this for the money, because you probably won’t be earning a lot at all, especially in the beginning. Do it because you love it and have a passion for music. Keep in mind too that it will cost a lot of time, money and energy to make it work if you want to do this professionally. I think a lot of people outside of the industry think this is an easy job and they can walk right into it. But that said, if you really want to do it, do it with all your blood, sweat and tears and then you’ll be OK. And yes, there will be a lot of all 3.

I am an unconditional perfectionist and I always want to produce the best quality possible. That’s also advice I would recommend to everyone, to work more on quality productions rather than quantity."

How has being raised in a musical household shaped your career path and when did you realize that Electronic music would be the genre that you would pursue? As early as my teenage years I knew I would become a professional musician and make a career in Music. However, the passion for producing electronic music came later on when I met a guy who was a producer in my hometown of Brussels. We became friends and after a while, he installed DAW (now Cubase), and I was like a child in front of the best ever video game. The magic happened that day and I knew, from that point, I would become a Producer. With your pedigree and education in music theory, composition, improvisation, and the ability to play multiple instruments, do you feel that these accomplished skills place a higher degree of pressure to produce high quality dance music? Yes, I am an unconditional perfectionist and I always want to produce the best quality possible. That’s also advice I would recommend to everyone, to work more on quality productions rather than quantity. Tell us about the process of making your new EP "Out Of The Shadows" and what your fans can expect to hear? I have many different genres represented in my EP. I spent 2 months in the studio and I produced all

the songs. I wanted to produce some very melodic songs and I collaborated with many beautiful talented singers. I still plan to work with Armada Music in 2018 and will continue to release some more music through that imprint. Your first few releases under the HIDDN identity“Polaroid” with Juicy M, “Shadow” with RIVERO and your “Crazy” remix project for Lost Frequencieshave without a doubt placed you on the list of artists to watch. How has each of these projects changed your life personally, musically and professionally? These projects were very important as they helped me to get my name out there in the dance music industry. To sign with Spinnin' Records, Musical Freedom and Armada for these 3 projects helped me to get more exposure and also to get traction on Socials and Spotify. Your fan base includes superstars Tiësto and Hardwell, both of whom have included your original compositions in their sets. How does it feel to have influential artists of that stature support and play your music to mass audiences? Being played by these two living legends is the dream of many producers/Dj’s. For me, it's the best recognition I could ever have wished for and I am simply grateful for this. Also, as a new talent, it's easier for me to reach a larger audience when my music is played by the upper eschalance of today's top global Djs.

Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13 | 87

Do you have a “wish list” of artists that you would like to work with in the future that you previously haven’t in the past? There are so many artists I would love to collaborate with. But, it’s really hard for me to create a top 5 list. You have just completed a tour in Asia. What did you learn from the experience from a musical and cultural perspective? My Asia Tour was unbelievable. I have always dreamed about traveling and meeting other people and experiencing different cultures. As Djs, we have opportunities to see the beauty of all kinds of different cultures and travel to countries all around the world. I feel blessed for this and I will always be grateful for these kinds of opportunities. How is 2018 shaping up for you in regards to new music releases and performances? Will you be coming to the U.S.A. in 2018?

88 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13

I have many new music projects on the way. I can tell you that my next single is a collaboration with the talented MATTN and the song will be released on Smash The House soon. No plans for the U.S. yet, but I'm working on it and hope to have some gigs Stateside soon. What advice would you give an aspiring producer entering today’s dance music space? Work hard every day, believe in yourself and your dreams, and, of course, enjoy making music. What are the 5 most influential albums (of any genre) that are included in your personal collection? DAFT PUNK- Homework Michael Jackson - Dangerous David Guetta - Nothing But The Beat Swedish House Mafia - Until One Dj Snake - Encore

"THIS GUY"

From the clubs of France to the festivals of America, the infectious beats of 21-year-old DJ Kungs have aroused the world into a fast-tempoed frenzy that never ceases to amaze his listeners and ascend the charts. "This Girl" first propelled the ambitious French artist to renown with its addictive rhythm, but more importantly, it was the initial showcase of Kungs’ unique talent of blending diverse genres into a single sensational track. From funk to soul, rock to pop, and countless instruments in between, Kungs masters the breadth of the music spectrum like an artist with a palette of paint, and each song a masterpiece of creative design.

They say authors "read like a writer;"when did you begin to listen to music like a musician? I like that [smiles]. I have always been surrounded by music, listening to rock music with my Dad and messing around with instruments that I couldn’t even play or understand yet. I think I really began to understand music when I began playing around with production software, and even earlier, taking an interest in different genres. I began noticing the structures of tracks in my teenage years and how different tracks can take on different forms and interpretations, which is probably why before producing original tracks of my own that where fully formed, I was playing around with remixing before I was noticed to remix some official tracks earlier on in my career. How has your creative process for creating unique melodies with your own instruments changed since you first began? I have grown in how I create. At first, I was messing around with instruments and finding my own way, just learning and getting used to ideas. But now, I can purposely use select instruments for sounds that I know more about, or that I want to experiment with but with more of a clear idea. My favorite is a MIDI

94 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13

performance Keyboard with a USB input that is super simple to use, in my studio at the moment. There is a range of instruments, including horns and more, in your songs. How many instruments do you yourself play, and which others do you hope to master?  I can play a bit of guitar, I took some lessons when I was a kid. I would love to master the piano, it’s for me the most beautiful instrument. Many musicians, myself included, remember distinctly those first few sessions alone with a cracked download of Fruity Loops. What was it like for you to have digital production software to learn from and grow with? It was like I discovered a gold mine. At that moment, I just discovered that you can re-create a band only with a computer and software - I have used Ableton since the beginning, it is, for me, an unlimited source of inspiration. Cutting samples is for me the funnest thing and I think Ableton is the best software for this. Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13 | 95

"

I never feel restricted by genre. I mentioned before some bands that I listened to growing up, and being able to collaborate them, was something I never thought would happen. I like the artists I collaborate with, or with "This Girl" being an older, soulful sample, it was important for me to keep that original character and essence of the tracks, or an essence of the artists I work with. I want to be able to blend these different styles together because I also listen to a lot of different genres. Who wants to be stuck in one sound? I think the future of music is very exciting and I want to hear as much of that music as I can and just keep creating!

What were your expectations for those first few unofficial remixes that you shared online? Do you think your style would have deviated at all had the response been different? There was no expectations with my unofficial remixes, I just wanted a chance to create music and learn through what I was releasing. The fact that people enjoyed those first remixes was a blessing and completely unexpected – I really liked Bob Marley’s music but there are so many remixes of him out there, because he is such an inspiration to a lot of people, that I didn’t think people would take notice but they did! I don’t think my style would have been majorly different because I still played varied live sets but my productions are tropical and happy – I won’t be making dark dance music any time soon. How do you plan for live sets? How do the crowd, fellow acts and setting affect your live performance? It really depends. Like for my ULTRA mainstage set recently (that was also streamed all around the world), it was important to keep everyone hyped. I played a lot of well-known tracks with a fresh twist, for example, Bruno Mars ‘Versace On The Floor.’” People know that track and the lyrics, but because I played the CID remix, it made people think but also, it made people think but also enjoy themselves and dance. But if I’m playing more intimate headline shows, like my recent club tour in South America, fans expect me to play my biggest hits and I can really focus on more underground tracks too, rather than thinking about playing to a larger audience. Not every great studio musician is an equally successful live performer, but you do both exceptionally well. What do you believe contributes to your ability to be such a force on stage? Thank you! I think it is confidence in my work, I’m proud of everything I release and I am very much a perfectionist. Maybe that is why I get nervous, but I do not feel a “pressure” to perform a certain way. As an artist, what was your goal with LAYERS, and how did you craft the album to achieve that goal? My goal was to create tracks to show my versatility and also the music I like to create. Like I said earlier,

98 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13

I like to make positive music and happy tracks but it was also important to me to work with a number of different collaborators. Ephemerals are one of my favorite bands, so to work with members of the group, and guys like Luke from UK indie band The Kooks, I grew up listening to those guys, so to have them feature was a dream. I didn’t want any two tracks to sound the same, and I’m proud of what I created. I’m already working on album number two. I’ve been to LA and Sweden working with collaborators, other artists, and just working on ideas. I’m excited already! According to your press kit, you’re due for studio sessions in Los Angeles, Paris and London. What’s it like going from producing on early digital software to working in international studios? Do you have a preferred process for recording? How does being in different studios affect your work? Haha! I answered that already. It is great working in international studios, it is completely different having to let go a little in terms of studio teams and working on ideas coming together but it’s important, and great fun, working with other people can teach an artist a lot of things - but I don’t have a preferred process. There seems to be a lot of genre-blending in your songs; i.e., "Don’t You Know" blends soul with pop; "Melody" features classic rock guitar melodies but an upbeat pop tempo; "Wild Church" is driven by exotic flute sounds and chants. What is your opinion on genre? Do you feel constrained by being defined by any certain genre? Does it affect your perspective on the future of music? I never feel restricted by genre. I mentioned before some bands that I listened to growing up, and being able to collaborate them, was something I never thought would happen. I like the artists I collaborate with, or with "This Girl" being an older, soulful sample, it was important for me to keep that original character and essence of the tracks, or an essence of the artists I work with. I want to be able to blend these different styles together because I also listen to a lot of different genres. Who wants to be stuck in one sound? I think the future of music is very exciting and I want to hear as much of that music as I can and just keep creating!

Your latest single “Are You Randy?” with Bali Bandits is a juggernaut track. Elaborate on the hilarious gamers in the video? Where did the inspiration for the idea come from and from whom? We loved the stuff from Bali Bandits for quite a while and finally we got in the studio together. It is a perfect match because their clubby melodic style mixed with the bassjackers energy created a dancefloor banger perfect for clubs and festivals. The video came along by brainstorming with the guys and the creators of the video, we thought it was a cool idea and fit the vibe of the music very well. Give us a snapshot of what your stage productions will look like for this year. We have super high energy and signature visuals that fit our music perfectly which we bring to almost every show. In between gigs across the world, how will you spend your free time? Workout, eat, sleep and trying to be a tourist once in a while. Are there any “young lions” in House music that you’d like to give a shout out to? SHOUT OUTS to Bali Bandits and Crossnaders. What’s in store for the rest of 2018? Lots of shows and music. Our next release will be “The Riddle” on Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike's label Smash The House. Also, we will play the mainstage of Tomorrowland again this year which will be HUGE!!!

[BOOKS IN REVIEW]

James Arena’s introduction to Disco has a fantastic back-story. It goes like this and I’m going to take the liberty of quoting the man directly. James explains it as it actually happened. “On a very late Saturday night in 1977, I was watching TV and waiting for my favorite horror film show, Fright Night (on New York’s WOR-TV), to start. It was hard enough to stay awake at that hour, but I soon discovered I’d have to wait an additional 30 minutes for my beloved show to begin. The station had added a surprise program to their lineup. My first reaction was ‘Oh, what the hell is this?!’ Then it happened. Over the thumping beat, the program’s announcer said, ‘From Miami Beach and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida…the disco capitol of the world… Disco’77!’ Taking the stage (in a small but flashylooking club called Pete ‘n’ Lenny’s) was singer Andrea

True, wearing a sparkling burgundy sequined dress and lip-synching her guts out about the joys of dancing the night away in the Big Apple. The song was ‘N.Y.. You Got Me Dancing’ and from that moment on, I was hypnotized—instantly addicted to a sound I had never heard and an energy that absolutely made my heart leap! ‘Holy cow,’ I thought, ‘this is great!’ If you know James, you know how much disco music means to him. It has been a passion and true love that has remained with him for decades. I now wonder if James ever gave thought to wishing one day, further down the road of life, what it would be like interviewing the leading talented ladies that were trailblazing their way across the USA and the globe for that matter. What questions he would ask

in conversations and would he turn them into published books? If he did not have the inclination way back in his youth, he ultimately did later on. The proof comes in these two books— “First Ladies of Disco” and the follow up “Legends of Disco.”

VH1's 100 Greatest Dance Songs of All-Time? These are just a few questions to entice you to learn more about this woman, a true talent who had a dream and the determination to do just about anything to achive it.

Collectively, 72 legendary singers, musicians and industry movers-and-shakers look back in time and talk about their exciting careers, taking you back to a period of decadence and musical magic.

Debbie Jacobs-Rock is another artist in this book that disco music fans need to know about. The vocalist had four of disco's biggest hits: "Don't You Want My Love," "Hot, Hot (Give It All You Got)," "Undercover Lover" and "High on Your Love." In her conversation with Arena, she shares a memory that goes like this. "To get on a stage —like Studio 54, The Saint, or remember the White Party—oh my god! Imagine being able to go up a scaffold at Studio 54, not being able to see or hear anything and have the curtains open up. Suddenly, I'm in front of 4,000 screaming individuals that are not only out there for me, they are out there having fun, living the life!" Plus, she talks a bit about her experiences working in jazz clubs and some great "one-liners" from Grace Jones!

“First Ladies of Disco” begins with forewords provided by the legendary Gloria Gaynor and Claudja Barry and ends with Harry Wayne Casey (KC of The Sunshine Band). Having these 3 icons provide commentary exhibits the historical importance of these conversations conducted by Arena. Among the interviewees are household names including Linda Clifford, Yvonne Elliman, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Martha Wash, Maxine Nightingale, Anita Ward and Norma Jean Wright. While it makes perfect sense that Arena would want to engage in conversations with these iconic women for this book, it is however, the inclusion of lesser-known artists who contributed timeless classics with their music that make this book uniquely special. Those acts include: The Andrea True Connection; Pattie Brooks; Miquel Brown; Carol Douglas and Audrey Landers among many others. This represents Arena’s genuine love and deep knowledge of the genre and keeps all the women responsible for the worldwide explosion of disco music alive within these pages through wonderful and insightful story telling. While I was familiar with the very famous disco queens included in this book, I was unaware of many of the artists represented in F.L.O.D.. The music they created was just as magical, and their stories and experiences of varying degrees are truly enlightening. For instance, did you know that Andrea True was a successful adult-movie star? Are you aware that her smash hit "More, More, More" landed at #45 on

Also interviewed in F.L.O.D. are George "Iz" Correia, Hazell Dean, Rick Gianatos, Tom Hayden, Tom Moulton, Felipe Rose, James "Tip" Wirrick and Michael Zager, all of whom were major players behind the scenes. Arena asks the relevent questions— female versus male singers, the significance of disco and whether the genre has received its due recognition, how the business side of the industry treated and handled the talent, and how the Gay community connected with disco, in particular, the connection to female singers. The answers provided are insightful, entertaining and real. And Arena does not forget the pioneering women that are no longer with us. He gives us brief historical profiles on Laura Branigan, Loleatta Holloway, Vicki Sue Robinson and Donna Summer. Once again, F.L.O.D is a time traveling, in-depth history lesson. The personalized manner of posing questions and getting the artists to open up without reservation results in a fun, informative and easy read, a polished skill that Arena has ultimately mastered. [REVIEWS: BOOKS] "Legends of Disco" features conversations with the crème de la crème of the disco era. Names like Alfa Anderson (formally of Chic), Ed Cermanski and Robert Upchurch of The Trammps, Janice Marie Johnson of A Taste of Honey, Randy Jones of The Village People, Rob Parissi of Wild Cherry and Debbie, Joni and Kim Sledge of Sister Sledge. Following the same formula as dictated in his previous book, "First Ladies of Disco," Arena opens "Legends of Disco" with his introduction expressing what disco has meant to him and goes on to wax poetic on the genre reaching it's 40th Birthday (in 2014). I imagine most people who will be turning the pages of this book will mark passages from Alfa Anderson's interview. She describes with great clarity pre-show jitters before a stadium gig in San Diego as such. "My knees were shaking so badly I just knew everyone could hear them." They were so rubbery that that I didn't think I could stand." Imagine that for a moment. It was that moment when Anderson realized just how popular their had become. As a child, she once broke her Daddy's collapsible ruler and when confronted, denied it, denied it, denied it. Needing an outlet to release the guilt, she banged on the piano and sang this lyric— "I broke it." Bang bang! "Yes, I broke it." Bang bang, bang! "And I'm glad I broke it!" Now, that is a hilarious story! She also shares who it was that introduced her to the NYC music community, and that would be Luther Vandross, and from there her career began. Her stories are many, i.e difficulties with "Le Freak," Chic's litigation involving the Sugarhill Gang and "Rapper's Delight," and life changing career moves outside of Chic. Remember Saturday Night Fever? Dumb question, right? Ed Cermanski and Robert Upchurch and The Trammps earned a Grammy for their contribution to the OST with "Disco Inferno." In their interview they share how all that came about and their reactions to John Travolta's dance abilities. Here's the passage. "From what I was told, our attorney at

108 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13

the time, David Steinberg, was having lunch with [Saturday Night Fever producer] Bob Stigwood. The soundtrack came up in the course of conversation and the suggestion of putting the Trammps on it was discussed. The 2001 club was like a home for the group. We could work there when we couldn't work anywhere else. That club was a hotbed for disco acts at the time and also R&B acts out of Philadelphia, like Blue Magic and artists like that." Further in they continue with "Well that was just a giant boost for us! The group had been doing well before. I believe they would have continued on an upward trajectory, but when the movie came out it just changed everything! The soundtrack was the biggest selling of its time, so that was a great thing for us. The movie and the soundtrack brought disco music out of the big cities and into suburbia. It spread it out to areas that were'nt as exposed to the music as New York was." Robert comments "I was surprised John Travolta could dance. To see him dancing to our music in the film was fantastic. It was actually a rush! The cause and effect of being included on the monumental Original Soundtrack is going from working 4-5 nights a week to touring 30 cities in 31 days, playing Madison Square Garden, the Superdome, and sharing billing with KC and The Sunshine Band, Crown Heights Affair and Gloria Gaynor. Also in the conversation, Ed and Robert remember their band mates Norman Harris, Ron Kersey and Jimmy Ellis. Ed's closing comments "We're proud of 'Disco Inferno' of course, but we're also proud of all the other material we did. Right back to the first albums, with 'Love Epidemic,' 'Sixty Minute Man,' 'Where Do We Go From Here'—they were melodic, pretty songs with a lot of soul. I hope people will remember that work too. We have always been a party group though, and that's a great legacy. I think the whole group would love it if people look back and say we put on a really great show! That they were really happy when they came to see us! That they didn't ever sit down like at a formal concert—they partied and danced. That they forgot about the nine-to five or whatever else may

have been on their minds. If you think of it that way, maybe the Trammps did a really good thing!" Agreed? Agreed! Here's one more interview to mention to grab your attention and it is with Randy Jones (the Cowboy) of the Village People. Jones tells his story with humility, humor and affection. Notably, he tells one that includes Grace Jones upon first arriving to New York City. "Two lessons I learned from Grace—don't work without fog and don't work without a good light. I remember she entered on a motorcycle. At one point, when she did the song 'I Need A Man', about all I was wearing was a leather pouch over my family jewels and a chain up the crack of my ass and around my waist. The chain was cold! That's how I got started," he laughs. "I didn't go to Broadway, but I was lucky enough to work with Grace as an early pioneer of disco performance art." Jones joined The Village People in 1977 and after being approached, clad in that famous leather pouch and chain g-string, by French producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, he convinced them to have a formal meeting in daylight and in a real office, dressed in his normal attire—cowboy

boots, jeans and a western hat and The Cowboy was born. Jones and the rest of The Village People had a phenominal wave of successful albums and singles, everyone knows what those are. By 1981, Jones had decided to leave The Village People, and would go on to pursue other musical projects, working with Dan Hartman on a track for the Rocky IV OST. The song was "Living In America" sung by James Brown. Shortly thereafter, Jones would reunite The Village People, set up a corporation for the band, leave the band once again, get married to his lifelong partner, continue to produce club hits, and even publish a book Macho Man. While I've only highlighted 3 interviews, which are such fun reads, the others inside "Legends of Disco" are just as great. I encourage all who love disco music and its personailities to pick up this book. It is the perfect record of note giving you a first rate education on the lives, past and present, of some of the greatest entertainers in the music's history. Disco is not dead, it's been immotalized within the pages of Legends of Disco, and we all should be thankful and grateful to James Arena. I am.

Point Of View Magik Muzik

 John Andersson, better known as Zoo Brazil, resides in Stockholm, Sweden. He's enjoyed multi-platinum status, Grammy nominations as a record producer and songwriter. As a DJ, he has performed all over the world at clubs including Ministry of Sound, Space and Pacha, plus numerous underground clubs and festivals all over the world— from Australia to Europe to North and South America and beyond. Additionally, Andersson has written music for various Hollywood movies and TV shows such as Nip/Tuck and for channels such as BBC, Discovery, MTV and HBO. He also composed music for the 2012 London para-olympics and was behind the music featured in Dermablend's "Go Beyond The Cover" video, viewed over 30 million times on YouTube leading to 2 Cannes Silver Lions awards.

[REVIEWS: ALBUMS] Andersson does not release full-length albums very often. The last one came to us in 2012 in the form of “Any Moment Now.” So, when this prolific producer decides to make and release a new album, we all can anticipate many things. For one, you can expect that there will be select tracks that will have high potential and probabilty of becoming instant classics, and at the very least, in general critical terms, the music will be heard and perceived as pieces of electronic art. This is an undeniable truth. This latest album, “Point Of View,” has a lot of those qualities. It is built with the classic, deep and tech house leanings effectively communicating the inner-goings on in John’s mind, musically speaking that is. Drawing on 40 years spanning many different musical influences lend inspiration in the creation of the song’s themes, and pushes you along to keep an open mind in allowing the possibilities to flow forth. The music on this album, its expressions and presentations demand it. Throughout the 10 tracks, you’ll be exposed to dreamy folk inspired compositions, tracks deep with bass, relentless grooves, and spectacular vocal performances from Wolf & Moon and Ursula Rucker, among others, plus variances in tempo, moods, and feels. Highlights include the following tracks. “From A Distance” featuring vocals from Wolf & Moon. The track displays folk strands against a prominent groove, strings, and throbbing low-bottomed bass. “Never Had” takes on a clubby house feel, especially with its tight bass line and bright melodic hook. However, it is the spiritual lyrics brought on by the soulful voice of Niara that makes this track memorable. A definitive must listen track! Another powerful vocal performance, this time by Mama, is on full display against a backdrop of gothic styled synthesizers, timbales creating a meditative sense of being. Looking for something a bit more moodier?

112 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 13

Well then, Wolf & Moon’s second appearance via “Careful” delivers the goods. For those that want edgier sounds, look no further than the track “Shadow.” The track features “Heart’s A Legend” frontman Philip, along with a masterfully written hook and awesome guitar licks. Ursula Rucker’s emotional half spoken word, half sung vocal performance shines with high brilliance within the house leaning track “In My Time.” The last three tracks that demand listens are “It Takes Two,” “Waiting” and “Empty Minds.” These tracks stray into the magical realms of Andersson's vision of tech house and beyond. Bars are raised and the ante is upped in terms of tempo and tones, giving way to very dramatic soundscapes with lots of strings and bombastic drops. “Point Of View,”once again and without a doubt, showcases Andersson's expertise and ability to compose and compile a brilliant collection of songs in to a cohesive musical narrative. This time around, dipped in spirituality and placed for optimum effect, the music throughout is thoughtful, imaginative, brainy and adventurous. The vocal tracks add a dimension of sheer beauty that is complimented with thought provoking moments of evocative and emotive words that are, at times, esoteric in nature. Andersson has allowed us to take a peek inside his musical mind with the making and release of this new album—taking all who will listen on a very enjoyable musical journey full of electronic wizardy and song writing expertise. Will we have to wait years for the next one? Well, ultimately, that is up to John, but I can tell you, anticipating new music, whether it's in the same vein or something entirely diffferent, we should all agree that it will be a top shelf musical production. Let's hope the next one comes sooner than later. What do you say John? Don't keep us hanging!

It is apparent that each and every artist on this compilation had some kind of impact on Curtis otherwise they would obviously not be on this collection. “Colin Curtis Presents Jazz Dance Fusion” 2 CD set acts as a history lesson for what was happening in the U.K. music scene contrary to the records being played i.e. Northern Soul, Funk and Disco during that time period. For 50 years, Colin Curtis has been spinning records as a professional DJ in night clubs all over the U.K and beyond. In the mid 70s, Curtis started to experiment with jazzy dance productions from artists like Patrice Rushen, Donald Byrd, and Charles Earland, among many others and developed a special interest of what was coming out on the legendary labels Blue Note Records, Prestige, Fantasy and Mercury. As his curiosity increased, the music fueled his desire to begin collecting LPs to satisfy his love of the music. “Colin Curtis Presents Jazz Dance Fusion” available on Joey Negro’s Z Records, is his way of sharing what he feels are the coolest and most prolific jazz dance releases from the 70s and it covers the sub-genres from Bebop to Fusion to Vocal Jazz. 20 choice tracks is what you get featuring some famous names you may recognize such as Richie Cole, Mark Murphy, Ron

beautiful soul jazz-version sets the bar high for the rest of compilation. Further in, you’ll come across the track “Zamba” essential cut that defines the artist, the fusion genre and includes a touch of Latin rhythms and sounds. From the Latin Jazz, Soul Jazz and Fusion represented on Harold Ousley’s “El Exi-Hente” a dance-floor filler in any era to the innovative Dave Matthews’ Big Band’s radical incorporation of jazz and funk as heard on “Vera Cruz,” an under-theradar song that redefined what the Big Band sound could conceive. These are just a sampling of the great musicianship throughout the collection to peak your interest. Now, do not be fooled. This compilation really has nothing to do with electronic dance music. However, like I wrote further up, it is a history lesson on the compiler, Colin Curtis, and his contributions to the U.K. DJ scene, which makes this coverage a no brainer. Jump in and start swinging! [REVIEWS: ALBUMS] The ultimate goal for "Future," according to Don, was to put out an album pushing things forward, sonically and musically into the future, hence the title. It’s been overheard that some fans are disappointed in the new direction Don has taken, his stepping away from his signature sound of future house. Look at it this way; change is not necessarily a bad thing. Why not do something new, interesting and thought provoking? I say bravo Don Diablo for stepping outside your comfort zone and giving us something unexpected. Of the 16 tracks on Future, the aforementioned singles listed previously are true highlights, but there are others that deserve to be written about as

DON DIABLO FUTURE HEXAGON

 "Future" is the second studio album by Dutch DJ Don Diablo. It was released in February 2018 through his Hexagon label. "Future" marks the follow up to 2008's “Life is A Festival” and to get people talking and spread the buzz factor, Don unleashed four tracks— "People Say," "You Can't Change Me," "Take Her Place" and "Don't Let Go"—to show how he has developed and evolved as a producer and songwriter. Lending his voice on three of the sixteen songs and the recruitment of highly skilled singers in Ansel Elgort, Nina Nesbit, Calum Scott, Betty Who, James Newman, Miles Graham, Holly Winter, Dave Thomas Junior, Paile and ARIZONA, showcase an album that is chock full of positive vibes, that communicates inner-reflection and a sense of brightness for the sunshiny days of the Summer season.

well. I'll start with the track “Everybody’s Somebody” featuring BullySongs. The song is a message of yearning to belong and love against a soundtrack of deep tones and chords, finger snaps, climatic choruses, rolling drums and slightly distorted keys. “Give Me Love” features a slick vocal performance from Calum Scott, acoustic piano chords and rhythmic percussion beats and a mid-section of a melancholic nature. “Higher,” with singer Betty Who, represents a “new” take on the proverbial “love song.” Slightly mellow, yet upbeat and colorful, nicely done. And one more for your consideration is “Head Up” with James Newman. The message is positive not only through its lyrics, but the songwriting is deep in emotion, dance oriented and filled with glorious electro goodness. Don Diablo’s "Future" is a solid piece of work. Enjoyable, light and heavy in the “feels” with lyrics that demand self-introspection and inspiring selflove. With Future and all of it’s ingredients, you cant’ go wrong. Once again, bravo Don Diablo.

For the funksters out there, “Typecast” has the jazzy elements you’d expect, complete with slick guitar playing, saxophone and horn parts that are deep in the groove and in the pocket. For those with a taste for more of a house feel, there is plenty of that as well. Now the real “Gold” among the 11 tracks, in my opinion, is “Party Rockin’.” Immediately you may think, oh, this is a Daft Punk rip-off. Maybe so, but it’s more than that. Just like title implies, it is a party rockin’ tasty track that undoubtedly gives nods to Daft Punk, with a touch of vocal distortion and a greasy dance groove. With the dropping of “Typecast” The Funk Hunters are even more poised for success than ever before. Track by track, the music is uplifting, upbeat, highly infectious and diverse in style. I urge and encourage you to get this LP now! You’ll love it.

Plus there’s a great remix of one of the tracks by Thomas Schumacher. I’ll get to that track further down in the review. AKOV’s first installment in the realm of concept albums: “The Initiation” paints a haunting vision of the future where dystopian society has embraced a one-world religion in the form of Virtual Reality. This is the opening line to the official Press Release. “The Initiation” EP serves a musical crystal ball that foretells the creative direction this artist is destined to take. Drum and Bass enthusiasts take note. “The Initiation” features four tracks: “Initiation,” “Talk To Me,” “Schnitzelklopfer” and “Space Between Us.” The music reflects AKOV’s imaginings of a better world minus humanity’s pitfalls of decadence, chaos and war. Interesting ideas since D’n’B, in general, is often decadent, chaotic and war like with its heavy assaulting sounds and rhythms. What AKOV has achieved here with his concept album is DnB that engages in superb fashion and the unbelievable weirdness and cutting edge electronic usage will leave the listener in total and complete amazement as each track concludes. Are you the adventurous type? Then it's time to get initiated!

Will Magid is an accomplished trumpet player, producer and ethnomusicologist recognized for his amazing ability to fuse live instruments, world influences and lush electronic productions. Out now, “Balkan Bump” features “Irfan” with Paul Berlin, “Ayamo” with Talib Kweli and includes twoadditional unreleased tracks in "Judaeo Slang" and "Wonderland." Magid shows once again how to express multi-cultures through new and fresh musical interpretations by using traditional and modern technology and compositional methods. “Ifran” and “Ayamo” are the results and they are true beauties placing the spotlight on a multitude of brass instruments, heavy bass and keys. As for the previously unreleased tracks, "Judaeo Slang" features traditional sounds of south-eastern Europe with hip-hop instrumental elements. Closing out the EP, "Wonderland" remains true to form in the vein of multi-cultural influence and composition with a bit more glitch-oriented electronic feel with killer trumpet and piano instrumentation. This EP is unique as is its composer.

Bruno Garca aka Brunetto returns from a 4-year hiatus with his new EP “Humanity” on the Sincopat label. Since the release of his last project, “Sheroine” via Irregular back in 2014, Garca has been focusing his energies promoting and pushing out new and exciting talent through his Miracle Management and Freelastica entities. Now, happily, he has returned under the Brunetto identity and has recuited contemporaries AFFKT, Fernando Lagreca and Marco Biagini aka Kellerkind to take on the remix duties. “Humanity” features Garca’s signature sounds of electronica in a deep and cinematic fashion creating a beautiful backdrop in a soulful pop manner for vocalist Bearoid to shine. As an added listening treat, the remixes range from energy and vibrational healing courtesy of AFFKT to the analog synths expertise envisioned by Fernando Lagreca and Kellerkind. All are different and varied, keeping inline with the original, keeping the spotlight on the unique sounds and production genius taking their remixes of the original to new and exciting heights.

Charlotte de Witte is on fire! Musically speaking that is. Seemingly everywhere in the Press, Social Media feeds and elsewhere, this rising star out of Belgium is quickly becoming a major player in the world of Techno. In March of this year, she released two awesome original cuts and a bonus remix by Lewis Fautzi via Spain’s famed Suara. Both of the originals, “Heart Of Mine” and “This,” are designed for big rooms and warehouses and other large spaces. “Heart Of Mine”- a definitive dance-floor filler features powerful drums, cool hi-hat cymbal programming, vocals and synths that all coalesce into a cohesive driving and dynamic soundtrack guaranteed to get you moving. Then Charlotte ratchets up the intensity to level 10 and brings the heat via drums against a tapestry of darker sounds on the red-hot burner “This.” So, strap in, be prepared to have your aural senses assaulted and experience why Charlotte is a darling among her peers, critics and fans.



Andre Frauenstein aka Lostly had a pretty good 2017. Most likely you’ve heard tracks such as “By Morning You’ll Be Gone,” “Nothing Left,” “Came Here To Forget” and “One Last Look” in clubs around the globe. Coming back strong this Spring with a two track EP for Vandit, Lostly delivers “Any Given Sunday” and “When It Ends,” demonstrating that Trance music can exhibit depth and soul. “Any Given Sunday” features an exquisite intro drawing you into an atmosphere full of color and uplifting rhythms playing one against the other that creates a feeling of happiness thanks to Frauenstein’s shiny songwriting brilliance and production technical skills. “When It Ends,” also uplifting in its composition, has deeper drumming and a brighter sense of euphoric sounds to entice the listener. Both of these tracks deserve to be heard, played and replayed. Goosebumps? Perhaps. But one thing is certain, Lostly has vision of where he wants to take Trance music. Directly to depths of one’s musical soul. Mission accomplished.

Luca Gaeta’s latest Techno creations are brought to you through the label Tronic. “Self Control” finds the Italian DJ in fine form with three original tracks displaying expert programming, rolling melodies and thumping beats to get you moving. The title track, 7 minutes long, begins with muted kick drums and click patterns that brings in the melody to a full frenzied climatic point, eventually transitioning into a darkly tinged array of distorted electronic chords and sounds. Next up is “Trader.” Muted kick drums once again gets it started followed by faster paced percussion rhythms and a keyboard melody that reminds oneself of the Who’s introduction of the classic “Eminence Front.” Closing out the EP is “Octave.” Slightly more dance oriented, the thumping kick drums continues to dominate amongst the vocal samples and quickly paced electronics and ryhthms. “Self Control” is spread out over 21 minutes and represents a solid offering from Luca Gaeta and should appeal to all Techno fans.

PIG & DAN THE EARTH ELEVATE





Lucy Monkman aka MONKI is versatile, passionate and dedicated. These are three golden rules of pursuing a career path in producing music. Considering her wealth of experiences such as interning at Rinse FM to hosting a weekly show on BBC’s Radio1, it makes sense for Monkman to launch a label (&Friends) to release not only her own productions, of which “MONKI” is one, but also those who share like-minded musical ideas. On “MONKI” you get two distinct tracks, “Voices” and “Love Magic” On “Voices” Monkman lays out a steady beat with deep-bottomed bass and a vocal treatment that perpetuates body movement with its groove and electronics that are equally enticing and intoxicating. “Love Magic” brings in the disco inflected rhythms and sounds of kick drums, shakers and claps, all rolled up into a hip modern take on the genre. With this new two track EP, Monkman further solidifies her place as one of the most exciting DJs/ producers coming out of the U.K. and that’s saying something.

Pig&Dan is a duo that is becoming more popular amongst the world's Techno generators. A new 4 track EP, out now and released through their label Elevate. Titled “The Earth” you get “synthetic” textures to darker tones to high energy and eurphoric sound-scapes. The opening title track versus the remix provided by Shall Ocin, provide two entirely different listening experiences. While the original builds on eerie sounds and draws the listener inwards, the remix takes it down a darker road with its deeper tones and bolder textures. The other two tracks: “Take Me” is a fierce, Techno burner that incorporates electro style patterns and breakdown transitions, brought on by acid inspired beats. Then you have “Cryptic.” The music is quickly paced with its high energy and a female vocal part that resides high above the electronics. This track is hot fire as far as Techno is concerned. So, Techno and Pig&Dan fans, these 4 tracks that build out “The Earth” are to behold. Do it.

WILLIE GRAFF & DARIN EBOLI TRIBECA TAPES MUSIC FOR DREAMS





London based DJ, producer and Warehouse Music honcho Ryan Aitchison, aka Mella Dee, is known in certain circles as one who is not afraid to try new things and experiment when it comes to his music productions. Historically, he’s blended fast paced Techno with elements of House, Hardcore and Jungle on previous releases, evolving to a new creative high. His latest self-titled EP is a prime example of his willingness to step outside the box of electronic music’s norms and deliver to his fans something brand new. This time around he has decided to release under his given name Ryan Aitchison and give his fans this new project that is more focused on experimental and darker sounds than what one may have previous heard. It is brimming with exciting heavy and pounding percussion, moments of heavy funk and electro tinges, all of which feature brilliantly on the EP, and really showcases the young DJ/producer’s growth in creativity and risk taking all the while staying true to evolving his sound identity.

Willie Graff and frequent collaborator Daren Eboli have given the world a fantastic new EP “The Tribeca Tapes.” Released in March through Music For Dreams, Graff who splits his time between New York City and Ibiza, along with Eboli have conceived this new EP in a stunning collection themed around the Big Apple. The two’s explorative nature in dance music is presented across four distinct tracks: “Love Flight,” “First Light,” “Second Sun” and “Moon Tan.” You will experience lush strings, Baeleric influences, cascading layers of synthesizers, disco styled guitar licks ala Nile Rodgers, keys and bass in Dub flavors, and various organic percussion instrumentations. As you take all this in, you’ll be grooving hard to the melodic hooks, taken aback to the sweaty magical nights of 80s new wave and even experience a dose of high quality trance. Rejoice and embrace this gift that Graff and Eboli have put forth. Great music like this doesn’t come around too often.

ALECEO TAKE MY LOVE MUSIC FOR DREAMS





Al McKay is the former guitarist of the American funk band Earth, Wind & Fire, and a recipient of multiple Grammy Awards. McKay now leads his own group Al McKay's L.A. All Stars, with former EWF members Johnny Graham, Fred White along with Rahmlee Michael Davis and Michael Harris of the former Phenix Horns and Andrew Woolfolk. I often think to myself how cool it would be to sit down and have a conversation with Dave Lee aka Joey Negro about a subject that he’s obviously so passionate about, 70s disco and R&B classics, rarities, and under-heard gems. Maybe one day. Al McKay Allstar’s “Heed The Message” is another Joey Negro “gold standard” remix. Funk rules the day on the original and on the three different versions created by Lee. All three-feature “chicken-necking”/ walking-esche bass-lines, classic disco rhythm guitar licks, awesome vocal harmonies and horn sections representing the best of the era. Disco/Old School R&Band funk is not dead, it’s alive and well, thanks to Joey Negro!

The Danish label Music For Dreams has diversified its catalogue with the signing of Siberian, yes Siberian, Aleceo. “Take My Love” is a downtempo ballad of a song that is mesmerizing, mellow and beautifully composed. Drawing on nostalgic sounds, “Take My Love” provides the listener a piece of music that rarely heard and that is what makes the track so intriguing. The BIG surprise on the track is the voice that is heard. It shines of mysticism and the efemeral and is the true essence of the feeling that one gets when listening. You’ll do a double take, guaranteed, as it the voice of Aleceo himself. He delivers a remarkable upper register prowess with softness that brilliantly compliments the sheer beauty created and displayed in the song’s musical composition. Be on the lookout for Aleceo to release his debut EP “Teletrip,” a project five years in the making, written in locations including India, Georgia, and Indonesia later this year.

ALEX M.O.R.P.H. & MARK SHERRY MAGNETAR VANDIT

COPENEMA DEIXA A MUSICA TOCAR MUSIC FOR DREAMS





“Magnetar” is the triumphant result of two Trance giants: Alex M.O.R.P.H and Mark Sherry. The magic comes in the forms of fast paced drums, atmospheric layers of various colors and a space themed melody, countered by booming sounds, slight distortion and dramatic drop. Technically, the mastery of the machines shown by both, Alex and Mark, showcase a bold new vision and direction for Trance music in general. Cosmic and experimental in the compostion's nature, “Magnetar” delivers another solid cut for Vandit. Be prepared to be uplifted and transported through a new door within the house of Trance music. The track demands multiple listens and the more you partake, the more you’ll hear the underlying electronic wizardy that these two talented producers have conjured up. It’s been said “you’ll wonder why this didn’t happen ten years ago.” The short answer could be the genre was just not ready for such a progressive forward thinking production. Now it is.

“Deixa A Musica Tocar” is defined as “Let The Music Play.” The architects behind this blend of Bossa Nova and Baeleric influence is Kenneth Bager, Rodrigo Sha, Troels Hammer and Thomas Shultz collectively known as Copenema (Copenhagen vs. Ipanema). “Deixa A Musica Tocar” is the second single from a forthcoming debut LP due out later this year and as in the previous single “Te Faz Bem,” the music sets the anticipation high for the arrival date. The newly released cut features funk infused guitars, a low bottomed bass line, improvised sax playing, various percussion sounds and the Bossa Nova stylized vocals by Rodrigo Sha. Spread out over five and half minutes, “Dexia A Musica Tocar” is a tune, not only for beach goers, Ibiza residents and Baeleric fans, but for also for those that are looking for new inventive ways that Bossa Nova and Baeleric styles fused into new sounds. What else can I say? “Let the music play!”

KAREN HARDING & TOM FERRY RUNAWAY BMKLTSCH RCRDS

LULLEAUX SOBER DIRTY SOUL





Singer songwriter Karen Harding’s short but budding career includes accomplishments such as appearances on U.K. TV programs Eurovision: Your Country Needs You and X Factor. She was discovered by Disclosure’s manager MNEK after her cover of “Latch” and soon thereafter signed with the label Method. MNEK produced Karen’s 2016 debut single “Say Something” which would stay on the U.K. Charts for 26 weeks peaking at #7 and eventually achieving Gold and Platinum status. Jumping forward to Spring 2018, Harding has released a brand new song, “Runaway,” a collaboration with Tom Ferry, who's also an upcoming U.K. producer with recordings on Armada and Ultra. This new song is deeply steeped in the house tradition. Like “Say Something,” on “Runaway,” Harding displays once again great songwriting, infectious singalong chorus lines, personal lyrics backed by energetic beats and a brightly polished melody, all showcasing her talents in a very bright spotlight that should ensure her longevity as a rising star on the U.K. dance scene.

Lulleaux holds a Master Degree, has run a successful business and is now a rising Dance music producer coming out of the Netherlands. He has worked with Rita Ora and Benny Benassi, contributed to major movie soundtracks and has recordings on Epic Amsterdam and Dirty Soul. His previous single releases, “Contact,” “All The Kids” and “Fade Into The Sun” have accrued upwards millions Spotify streams collectively among his 1.9 million monthly listeners. On May 10th, Lulleaux released two new tracks: “Sober” and “Missing You” through Be Yourself. I’ll start with digging in to the “Sober” track. Featuring sexy vocals, brightly colored instrumentation and a deep grooving bass-line in the House music, the track sets the bar high and majestically ushers in the Summer season. One listen to “Sober,” with its “Hot” suggestive narrative and bright sound design, you’ll get the message! Inhibitions off, confidence on, and potential hookups abound for the Summer, especially on the Festival circuit.

OFENBACH VS. LACK OF AFRO PARTY BIG WORLD PUBLISHING

PAUL VAN DYK & JAMES COTTLE VORTEX VANDIT





Parisian duo OFENBACH (Dorian Lo and César de Rummel) are a favorite of mine, joining countless others that have had the pleasure of hearing their musical productions. They’ve already blazed a trail in their homeland of France and other European territories and now, I’m writing to inform you readers in the U.S.A. and elsewhere, it’s time to get on board the OFENBACH “Party” train. Just like their previous hits “Be Mine” and the super-dope “Katchi,” the latter of which ranks as one of the most innovative dance cuts I’ve heard in last 12 months, comes another tasty cut. This time around working with Lack of Afro, they’ve ratcheted up the tempo and added hip-hop vocal flavors to their already successful formula of electro and rock designed dance music. “Party” features Herbal T and Wax on the vocals and with this new track, OFENBACH’s creative process is evolving to new exciting heights. Again, get onboard the OFENBACH “Party” train!

Paul Van Dyk and James Cottle’s “Votrex” stands tall on its own. It is one hell of a spaced out, thumping and driving climatic piece of music with magnificent drops that is perfectly designed for filling up sweaty nightclub dance floors. How could it get any better? Enter remix extraodinaire, Jardin. Given the opportunity from Vandit Records to pick one track from Paul’s latest release “From Then On”, it is said that Jardin made a “bee-line” straight to the James Cottle collab “Vortex.” The Jardin Remix stays true to the original idea, quickens the pace and incorporates heavier kick drums as the track progresses, the melody gives way to frenzied snare drum programming taking “Vortex” and the listener into the stratosphere. Spread out over 6 minutes and 50 seconds, the remix adds subtle, yet dynamic elements to the original, accenting the overall beauty of PVD’s composition. Simply put, it is aurally spectacular.

THE NIGHT DIFFERENT STORY MONSTERCAT

VICETONE WAY BACK MONSTERCAT





By now, you should know that Dan Stephens and Alana Watson of NERO have embarked on new project under the name The Night. Debuting on Monstercat, they’ve unleashed their track “Different Story” which is painted with Funk, Pop and R&B and gives nods to Prince among others. “Different Story” is “ripe for the picking” with a great sense of “sugary sweetness,” a radio friendly piece Pop music that “kind of sorta” harks back to the late 80s and early 90s. A distinct departure from productions of NERO’s past, “Different Story” solidly offers up a fresh new direction for the newly married couple with their new and exciting musical vision path for an upcoming EP and a brand new live production. Take note, Dan and Alana, while going in a more Pop oriented direction, continues their superb songwriting, musicianship, melody-making and vocal prowess, and if this debut single is a sign of what’s next, it should be hot and fresh!

Hailing from Nashville, Tennesee, byway of the Netherlands, Vicetone have penned several charting hits for Spinnin’ Records and Monstercat and has had two tracks- “United We Dance” and “Follow Me” feature as the Official song for Ultra Music Festival’s aftermovie in 2014 and 2015. In just three years, Vicetone have chalked up some heavy numbers in realm of streams. 300 million to date with 50 million being attributed to their smash single“Nevada,” the 2016 track that featured singer Cozi Zuehisdorff. Returning to Monstercat, the label that released their 2013 breakout track “Heartbeat,” with a brand new anthem titled “Way Back.” They have brought back Cozi for the vocal duties giving her a composition of sweeping strings, guitars, a groovy bass line, rapid fire drums that coalesce into a brightly colored, beautiful and dramatic melody. Will “Way Back” enjoy the success as their previous collaboration tracks? I’d have to say yes, and it should also be a summer festival favorite as well.
