During ADE, Amsterdam becomes the center of the global electronic music scene for five days and thus is a breeding ground for cultural and technological innovation. For the past three years, live music has had an important position within the ADE festival program through ADE LIVE. Paradiso, Melkweg and Sugar Factory joined forces again this year during the two-day program, allowing visitors to discover the latest electronic live acts and honour established names. Last year, renowned artists like Fatima Yamaha, Hercules & Love Affair and Marian Hill played next to (then) emerging acts such as Nambyar, Phlake and Témé Tan and showed that electronic live music deserves a prominent place within ADE's offering. This year's program will leave an even bigger mark on our festival program, thanks to the queen of nu-disco: Róisín Murphy. Ever since her Moloko days, the Irish vocalist has been able to innovate and surprise us with her unusual pop music. Together with the synth-heavy electro music of Agar Agar, the punky techno of Red Axes [live] and the dreamscapes of Eefje de Visser, the third edition of ADE LIVE promises yet again to offer a wide range of musical talent. [NEW MUSIC: PREVIEWS] songs penned and delivered by Norwegian singer/ songwriter Ane Brun and the incredible Alison May respectively. An artistic statement and a perfectly considered body of work, "In My Last Life" owes very little to the dancefloor that Andrew is often associated with - instead drawing its inspirations from influences as far and wide as Kate Bush, Atoms For Peace, Aphex Twin and Talk Talk. Through its 8 songs, the LP plots an enchanting, carefully spun tale of love and loss - explored through the narrative prisms of reincarnation and immortality. Alison May swims in the overwhelming sensations of love in the ethereal electronic washes of "Tidal Wave," looks at love through reincarnation on the dreamy "In My Last Life" and whispers of stalking ex-lovers from beyond the grave on the shuffling, Timbalandesque beats of "Immortal Lover." Every visionary artist has a defining work - their personal magnus opus. For the polymath Andrew Bayer, "In My Last Life" might be just that. Grammy nominated through his production work with Above & Beyond, the D.C. native co-produced their #3 US album "Common Ground" and is also a writer and producer on Lo Moon’s indie electronica hit "Loveless." As a DJ, the Anjunabeats star has graced the stages of tastemaker electronic festivals such as EDC Vegas, Electric Zoo and Creamfields, and headlined clubs from LA to London. But it is as an album artist that Andrew Bayer has sculpted his reputation as a true innovator - an artist in the classic sense of the word. It’s a journey that began with his 2011 debut LP "It’s Artificial" - described by Mixmag as “an incredible album of sophisticated electronica." It’s 2013 followup, "If It Were You, We’d Never Leave" took an even bolder creative direction. Ditching the 4/4 beats completely, Andrew instead conjured a 16-track sampladelic odyssey featuring Sufjan Stevens, Ane Brun and Des-ree - earning comparisons to DJ Shadow, Moby and Flying Lotus by XLR8R. Five years in the making, this third LP "In My Last Life" represents a humanising of the enigmatic producer’s sound - comprising of 8 heartfelt and emotional

Ane Brun’s three turns, meanwhile, are as diverse as they are majestic. Nodding back to classics 80s ballads from Kate Bush and Sade, "Love You More" is a slow-building indie-pop beauty loaded with joy and musicality. Somewhere between Aphex Twin and The XX, "Hold On To You" is a string-laden, bittersweet ode to the recently departed, whilst the psychedelic synth-pop of "Your Eyes" that could easily be filed next to the best work of MGMT, Passion Pit et al. And then there’s closer "End of All Things," an anthemic, arm-waving electronica excursion, where Alison May sings in ode to a recently lost love - capturing all the celebration, uncertainty and emotion at the end of a beautiful road. A perfect closer, but "In My Last Life" is also an album that needs to be taken in its entirety. Taken as one cohesive and beautifully constructed whole, the 8-track LP represents an journey that will surprise, stun and overwhelm those that submit to its charms -a truly personal masterpiece with all the musicality and detail that Andrew’s fans know and love him for. [NEW MUSIC: PREVIEWS] will be embarking on a world tour which kicks off this September. With stops in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Denver, and European and Australian dates to be announced soon on the itinerary, fans all over the world will get the opportunity to get a sneak preview of the "Evasion" album. The LP is a culmination of CloZee’s experience traveling the world, without barriers. “It invites the listeners to discover the richness of their own imagination thanks to the very different influences: a night in the streets of Tokyo, a dancer, a beach of Les Landes, a stormy evening in the mountains, the jungle of Costa Rica, the #MeToo movement, the Nevada desert…” French indie-electronic composer and producer CloZee has carved out an unmistakable signature sound in dance music, and now she’s gearing up to share her glitchy, worldly beats with fans everywhere in the form of her debut album and an incredibly packed world tour. Comparable to live electronic acts like Bonobo, The Glitch Mob, and Gramatik – CloZee embraces sounds that aren’t familiar to all ears and blends them into sonic perfection. With seven North American tours already under her belt, along with stops all over her native France, India, and performances at esteemed festivals including the Do LaB’s stage at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Electric Forest and Okeechobee, CloZee is a world-class traveler and her global perspective seeps deeply into her ethereal sound. Now, the rising composer has a debut full length album up her sleeve that she’ll unveil for fans later this year. For those who can’t wait, CloZee

Since the beginning, Global Underground has heavily invested in new talent - the lifeblood of the electronic music scene - as exemplified by the benchmark Nubreed album series that’s counted Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg, Lee Burridge, and Satoshi Tomiie, amongst its ranks. Recent releases include Habischman (#9), Oliver Schories (#10) and Theo Kottis (#11). And, while these albums have made stars of the DJs who’ve mixed them, GU has provided an outlet for thousands of up and coming producers, many of whom have debuted their work on the label’s series, for over twenty years. This year has been equally exciting with Denney recording tracks for Nic Fanciulli’s seminal Saved Records and Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound. He also took on a South and North American tour, has played key gigs at Elrow, Ibiza, Miami Music Week with Green Velvet, Mark Knight, Crosstown Rebels and Roger Sanchez, as well as festival dates at Gottwood, Hideout, and Snowbombing. However, he took a break from his 2-year global touring schedule to curate his Nubreed album and considered over six thousand tracks from his iTunes database as well as rooting through his vinyl collection and inboxed new promos. Denney said, “This 3-month labour of love has resulted in the most personal and emotive selection of music I’ve ever made. I thought the Essential Mix was tough, this was another level again." [NEW MUSIC: PREVIEWS] To realize "Invictus" in its entirety, it was necessary for Juraj to co-opt talent from both inside the trance realm and out. Over its course, co-producers working alongside him came to include Giuseppe Ottaviani, Eco and The Thrillseekers, as well as studio contemporaries like Robert Nickson, Ferry Tayle and Exis. He also drew on a wealth of singing talent to add additional shades to its story. "Invictus" has lyrical and vocal contributions from Julie Thompson, Merethe Soltvedt and others - their songs frequently metaphoric parallels echoing its unfolding plot.
In 2016, Juraj 'Driftmoon' Klička released "(R) Evolution" - his first artist album. Its arrival provoked a warm reception from DJs, big love from fans and positive noises from press. This past July, less than 24 months on, his sophomore release lands. It is a follow-up really in name only. Between the two pieces lies a gulf, striking in both size and nature. With "Invictus," in pretty much every way imaginable, Juraj has raised aim, game and ultimately the Driftmoon name. "Invictus’"started life not as sounds, but as words and pictures, in graphic novel form. With a mediationon-loss its central theme, it deals with “a story told from the perspective of a father who is recording his memoirs, before going to the funeral of his two children who’ve died far away, and in circumstances unknown.” An extraordinary subject to author on, as Juraj is not yet a father himself. Lending more insight to this, the Slovakian continues: “I am a firm believer that strong and emotional life experiences can change a human being in their entirety. I wrote the story to try and gain an understanding of how a parent must feel when they lose something they’ve given life to. There’s a lot of my own experiences bedded into the story but he clarifies they are figurative in its overall scheme.”
46 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14
Playing a key role in the album’s extraordinary makeup are its spoken interludes, which relate the story of "Invictus." Driftmoon became reacquainted with voiceover artist Robert Polo, who plays the central part of the father. Polo, in turn, connected him with an American couple living in Prague who voiced the story’s siblings. Commencing in the summer of 2017, storyboarding and writing the screenplay for ‘Invictus’ took 6 months. The germ of every new track produced for album took seed through an idea on that started life on Juraj’s storyboard. The music mirrors the arc and mood of the tale. From the melancholic & lamenting to the hopeful & uplifting, it ebbs and flows, engaging the listener with the plot in a multidimensional manner. “Apart from the very ending I wrote the whole storyline myself," says Driftmoon. "As I do not have kids yet, Robert told me he would write the final monologue, where the father is recording the very last message, talking about his children." It was, he says, "one of the most emotional moments in my life when he, a professional recording artist, broke down during the recording session, imagining himself in the same shoes as his character.” A project epic in scope and boundless in imagination, one ripe with ambition and "nothing’s impossible" attitude, "Inviticus" is a “production” in the truest senses of the words. A release unlike any other from electronic music’s quarter! Buy it here.

[NEW MUSIC: PREVIEWS] could still be felt with their tracks being sampled by The Notorious B.I.G, NWA, A Tribe Called Quest, Dr.Dre and Snoop Dogg. The inauguration of Donald Trump as US President in 2016 inspired Hassan and Oyewole to resurrect the group to create a brand new record, modern and edgy, and deeply relevant and reflective of our times.
On the 50th anniversary of the band's inception at an event in Harlem, NY to commemorate Malcolm X's birthday on 19 May 1968, influential spoken word artists, poets and commentators The Last Poets are set to make a glorious and relevant return with their first album in over 20 years, "Understand What Black Is." Produced by Ben Lamdin (Nostaglia 77) and Brighton legend Prince Fatty, whose speciality is traditional reggae and dub production's, "Understand What Black Is" is a ten-track album which speaks of a revolutionary struggle defined by both race and identity, that has never sounded more relevant. Released on Studio Rockers, there will also be an accompanying single featuring remixes of the title track "Understand What Black Is" by Mala (South London collective Digital Mystikz) and UK Dance music innovators Dego and Kaidi. Since the initial line-up of Dahveed Nelson, Gylan Kain and Felipe Luciano formed in East Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park, The Last Poets have produced under various guises over the subsequent years. However, it was their seminal output, namely 1970's "The Last Poets" under both Umar bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyewole that secured their legacy, becoming one of the most important influences in early hip hop. Throughout the last 20 years, the band have remained largely on hiatus. But their influence

Tracks on "Understand What Black Is" include "How Many Bullets," which bridles with defiance as Oyewole works through a litany of injustices suffered by black people in the US: "You’ve Tried To Blow My Brains Out With Bigotry, Chopped Off My Wings, So I Couldn’t Fly Free, And Dared Me To Be Me, Took My Drum, Broke My Hands, Yanked My Roots Right Up Out Of The Land, And Riddled My Soul With Jesus." "What I Want To See" describes a utopia - a refuge from hurt and those who’d make "our vision blurred, and our faith obscure," whilst the title track "Understand What Black Is" aims to transcend ethnicity: "understand what black is... It's the source from which all things come... black is a hero, not a villain." The album even takes reference from Prince's 2003 album of instrumentals, "News," which Hassan drew comparisons from with his own childhood experiences: "That poem took me about a year to write... I just kept writing and writing but not getting too far and then I heard that album and the musicianship was amazing. I loved Prince in that movie Purple Rain because my father was a talented musician but he was into brutalising Mama at times and in the movie there's a Jerome and my name is Jerome, so it was like he was telling my life story as well." The album acts as a body of work between individual members each speaking of their own personal journeys, but feeding into the much larger narrative of struggle and oppression, alongside a fervent hunger for social change. These are struggles and tests of personal resolve that have directly shaped and moulded the bands' unique sound over the course of an impressive 50 years, and their powerful and influential commentary remains as relevant as ever. [NEW MUSIC: PREVIEWS] To that end, Alex Di Stefano, Ciaran McAuley, Amir Hussain, Casey Rasch and Leroy Moreno are just some of those who’s latest studio wares have found their way into #22’s system. You’ll also find music from classic trance operators like Misja Helsloot, Andain and Talla 2XLC, whilst Menno himself contributes two tracks to 2018’s order. Mixed to the exacting standards De Jong fans have come to know, expect and love, ITWT22 weighs anchor in a Psy-ish state of mind. Liquid Soul & Zyce’s splice of Paul Oakenfold’s "Full Moon Party," Metronome’s take on GMO’s "FortyTwo" and Tyas’ take on Menno’s own "Ananda" all pile on the frontend pressure.
As venerable an institution as exists in trance, IN TRANCE WE TRUST unleashed the latest edition in their mix collection series this past July.
Exclusively, "Victra" from Skylex comes hot on the heels of the US producer’s 2018 treatment of Andain’s "Beautiful Things."
Having assumed its reins back in 2014, chairman Menno de Jong has A&R’d the label into a new era and through its annual ADE showcase, brought it a live aspect.
"My Shadow" by Alex Di Stefano,"‘If I Survive" from Robbie Van Doe, "Mana’"courtesy of Amir Hussain and Ciaran McAuley’s "The Titanic" supply a shifting, compelling blend of harmonic vibes, mixed with tougher edged sounds.
Alongside Sneijder and Mike Saint Jules, the Dutchman mixed a disc of its commemorative 20th Anniversary Triple CD, but given his longstanding ITWT relationship, surprisingly hasn’t previously gone solo on his own edition.
As the mix moves into its second phase, "uplifting’" becomes its prime directive. In title and tone, "Flying High" from Casey Rasch, Misja Helsloot’s "See The Sun Again" and Talla 2XLC "Uprising" each elevate its trajectory by degrees.
That’s rectified now, as he takes the mix helm to put his vision for the label into the sharpest possible focus.
With the pH-pow of John O’Callaghan’s acidic "Next Stop Muddy Waters" still ringing in the ears, Menno drops his 2018 Outro Edit of "Set To Sail," giving ITWT22 a fittingly anthemic conclusion.
Across its sixteen tracks (ten of which feature exclusively), Menno balances productions by scene greats (Paul Oakenfold, John O’Callaghan among them) with those making waves more recent in nature.
A summer essential for IN TRANCE WE TRUST collect-avists and newcomers alike, you can order the album here .

Scorching times demand scorching tracks. Hardcore temperatures sizzle sweetly with hardcore beats – and maybe a bit of acid squelch. Who better, then, to roar in out of the sun and soundtrack summer ’18 than the original electronic music trailblazers? Presenting "Need Some1," the pounding first single from The Prodigy’s forthcoming album. It is, if you like, vintage futurism, a banger that features a classic house diva vocal sample from Loleatta Holloway (the original “voice” of Black Box’s "Ride On Time"). “I wanted to write something that had downtempo swagger, but still felt dangerous,” says the band’s Liam Howlett, introducing the single alongside an explosive video shot in Manila by Paco Raterta. “After being sent loads of pedestrian video director showreels,” says Liam, “Paco’s style stood out and punched me in the face: just so raw and original-looking, I knew he was the man for us. The finished video has such violent edge and style and looks like nothing else we have seen – to us it’s only worth doing a video if you can make something original and exciting, which this is.” “Need Some1’ is the perfect opening salvo from

The Prodigy’s newly-announced album "No Tourists," which has been written, produced and mixed over the last year by main man Howlett in his studio in London’s Kings Cross. Though this is – Liam notes – “very much a band album”. Yes, there are one or two collaborators, but fundamentally this is the sound of the central Prodigy three, bringing their riotous sound to audiences old and new, two decades since they changed the face and sound of electronic music with epochal album"The Fat Of The Land." For a band who’ve sold 30 million records and won multiple honours (two Brits, two Kerrang! awards, five MTV awards, two Grammy nominations), this is next-chapter and next-level Prodigy. “Need Some1 demonstrates the thing about our band that I love: it’s multi-sided,” says Howlett. "We have the freedom to drop a tune like this alongside tracks led by Keef and Maxim, and still represent what we are about in the same way." Referring to the Holloway sample, Liam adds that “there’s always one element in our tunes that looks back to where we came from. When asked what the new album sounds like, my response is: Evil Rave. We own that sound.“ With production completed, the band have broken cover from the studio to shed further light on ‘No Tourists’. Expanding on the general shape of the project, Liam says: “this album is equally aggressive as the last records – but in a different way." A musician, songwriter and studio maestro, Howlett is as rigorous and righteously up for it as he was when he formed his 28-years-young band. He explains that, as ever, the new songs “are built to play live. To us, ‘No Tourists’ is ultimately about escapism and the want and need to be derailed. Don’t be a tourist - there is always more danger and excitement to be found if you stray from the set path.” Buy it here.

During the summer of 1988 and 1989, a new cultural movement (known culturally as Second Summer of Love) was born out of a desire to dance to the uplifting house sound of Chicago as enjoyed on the buzzing Balearic club scene of Ibiza, where a new type of all-night party lifestyle had been met with enthusiasm by UK clubbers. Upon their return to the UK, a new style of raving emanated from the underground club scenes of London and Manchester known as acid house, creating a mania referred to as the Summer of Love. The fervent demand to dance to electronic music spread like wildfire across the fields and disused warehouses of the UK, Europe and beyond, evolving into the global rave scene enjoyed today.

Kedves and company are an award-winning Hungarian export, drawing
on experiences of travel and adventures abroad as the driving source of inspiration for their cheerful, sunshiny, relaxing and peaceful songs and videos. Belau debuted 3 years ago with a song titled "Island of Promise," which won the Hungarian Video Music Award’s Special Prize, listed among Deezer’s top hits of 2015 and featured in the HBO series Aranyélet (Golden Life). In 2016, the transformation and evolution to a working band took place when Krisztián Buzás joined in. Belau would notch more than 40 live dates including gigs at major festivals such as Sziget, Untold and Balaton Sound. Late in 2016 the band released a 12-song debut album titled "The Odyssey" featuring several guest vocalists from Hungary’s underground scene winning Hungary’s "Best Electronic Album of the Year" honors and to top off 2016, Pepsi International featured Belau’s music in commercials across 33 nations. 2017 saw Kedves and co release a remix EP of selected tracks from their debut LP and an increase in bookings all across Europe. It appears that Belau is not showing any signs of slowing down their break neck pace of activity. This year, they’ve broadened their footprint in Europe and broke in to the U.S. with dates at SXSW and in New York City. In July, "Breathe" was unleashed. It is a stunning visual work featuring the vocals of Sophie Lindinger perfectly accentuating the summertime feels and vibes of the Caribbean. Belau’s rise as one of the most interesting electronica bands in Europe will continue to grow as they bring their conceptual sounds to audiences all across Europe and beyond. Look for Belau to continue their chill-wave journey with a new LP coming in Spring 2019.

[BUZZ WORTHY] FERNANDA MARTINS
Written by LEO WEAVER
T
echno and HardTechno DJ/Producer Fernanda Martins, aka Dot Chandler, has been cranking out her explosive sets in clubs and at festivals all around the world for the last ten years, feeding her crowds frenzied Techno selections with great charisma and skill. It’s been noted that she has a love for incorporating new and innovative textures and elements while integrating her wild cuts, scratches and all kinds of effects into her mixes. From an early age while growing up in Brazil, her music exposure leans towards 80s-90s Rock, Pop and New Wave. The music coming out during this period attracted and influenced her towards a career in making electronic music. In the beginning, she sought out the works of Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Mauro Piccoto and Adam Beyer, among others and the educational process began. Through hours upon hours of listening experiences it became quite apparent to Fernanda which genre of electronic music she would pursue. That would be Techno. Fernanda found herself immersed and under the influence of London’s Underground Techno scene, which fueled her desire to master her mixing skills. Over the course of her career, Funk and Acid Techno were primary selections of early live sets that evolved through careful selection to include heavier hard-core and pure techno. These days, when Fernanda is not in the studio or in the DJ booth, she can be found co-managing Devotion Records and Audiocode Records with Lucas Freire. Home based in Barcelona, both labels have grown and gained a healthy reputation for releasing dozens of quality Techno and HardTechno recordings. Dedication, continual periods of growth and experience, learning Techno’s sub-genres such as classic, acid, melodic and hard, combined with a very high energy stage presence, masterful mixing skills and a deep discography dating back to 2009, all prove one thing—when it come to the international conversation on up-and-coming female DJs/producers to watch out for, Fernanda Martins deserves inclusion. Prediction: Fernanda Martins continues to evolve as a DJ/producer, lands more high profile performance opportunities and ends up in that international conversation I mentioned earlier on. One day, Fernanda. One day.

[BUZZ WORTHY] HENRI PFR

enri Peiffer aka Henri PFR is the latest rising star coming out of Belgium’s electronic music scene. He has already racked up millions of video views, attracted hundreds of thousands of fans and followers on social media, landed a major label distribution deal with Sony Music and has had multiple singles charting in
the top 5, earning support from the likes of Armin van Buuren, Robin Schulz, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Lost Frequencies, among others. All of this and he is not even 25 years old yet. Henri’s musical path began with classical piano and music theory training at age six. By the time he was 16, he would be discovered by Armin Van Buuren who signed Henri to his Armada label, releasing his first two singles, one of which, "Tarida," peaked at #2 in the Belgian charts. A remix of German producer Robin Schulz’s 2015 album title track "Sugar" and a co-production credit for "Wave Goodbye" would be followed by having three original Henri PFR tracks released through Sony Music. By 2016, he would notch his first multi-monthly charting and Platinum status single with "Until The End." 2017 represents awards and acknowledgements. Beginning with winning Belgium Radio’s"Pure Newcomer Award" at the D6bels Music Awards, followed by winning an "Orchid" in the Culture category at Walloon Brabant’s Orchid Ceremony and topping it off, being named winner of the "International Newcomer of the Year Award" by Fun Radio DJ Awards during last year’s Amsterdam Dance Event. 2018 has continued to be fruitful for the young musician. Most notable is a recent single release "Catching Butterflies." For the track, Henri brought in super producer HIDDN (credits include: Yves V, MATTN, RIVERO) to work out the disco inflected tropical summer festival anthem. Bottomlining it, "Catching Butterflies" is the perfect soundtrack to sunny days and sunset moments. Additionally, Team Henri PFR has launched a campaign to be included in this year’s DJ Mag’s famous Top 100 DJ Poll. Will he enter the top 100? There’s a good chance that he will. Wouldn’t that be quite the accomplishment.

[BUZZ WORTHY] SYSTEM OF SURVIVAL
Written by JOSEPH ARTHUR
F
or almost 30 years, Peter De Lisi and Alex Carpentieri, two guys making disco, house and techno music under the stage name System of Survival. S.O.S. are just as fresh and innovative now with their live sets and music as they were way back in 1989. Both have a deep, long knowledge of house and techno traditions, expertise
in creating set lists and producing party inducing music, earning them the dubious title as "a DJ’s DJ." Over the years, Peter and Alex have entertained thousands as part of the DC10 crew at the iconic Circoloco, as well as spinning for sold out crowds at Berlin’s Panorama Bar & Watergate, NYC’s Verboten and Output, Tokyo’s Womb and London’s Fabric, just to name a few high profile venues. The duo share a common commitment to style beyond what’s trendy and ease in mixing the old with the new. Alex explains, "Our sets have never really fit to one particular style or type, Peter has a Soul and Funk background whereas mine is more Detroit or Chicago techno inspired, so when we play it's a real blend of the styles, making something completely different, something new." Peter and Alex have created an extensive and impressive back catalogue of music crossing many styles and genres. LPs, EPs, Singles and remixes, numbering in the dozens, have been released on big indie labels like Get Physical, BPitch Control, IRecords and Rebirth to name a few. Additionally, you can find System of Survival music through their label imprints I71 and Fventi. On the last Thursday of each month at Barcelona’s famed Macarena Club, plays venue host for a special event thrown by Peter and Alex. "SOundScape" is a curated music program placing the spotlight on sounds, inspirations, rhythms and concepts that are generally outside the dance floor norm by bringing in internationally known DJs to share their own unique mixture of sounds, beats and styles. This monthly event has recently been picked up as a weekly show broadcasted by Ibiza Sonica Radio.

MELÉ IS IN THE HOUSE Written and Interviewed by Catherine Strickland Photography by Sam Neill In 2015 Melé had a watershed moment — a breakthrough track titled "Ambience" that industry media and leading publications named as "one to watch in 2016." Today, Melé is reaping the rewards of dedicating years to perfecting his production skills and sound. And speaking of his sound, Melé is high on Brazilian percussion beats and rhythms, mixing hip-hop and classic house ingredients resulting in euphoric high-octane dance music. In just a short couple of years, he has earned all kinds of support from the industry’s most influential tastemakers and radio personalities including Annie Mac and Pete Tong to fellow producers and DJs Tiga, Jackmaster, Patrick Topping and Eats Everything. On Friday, August 31, Melé and Defected Records will drop a 2 CD set "Defected Presents Melé In The House." Compiled and recorded in a live setting, the project represents a giant step forward for the young producer to showcase his mixing talents, techniques and musical tastes as heard on 35 choice cuts. In this Q&A, Melé shares what life has been like (post "Ambience"), his burgeoning live event series- Club Bad, the future, and of course, the new compilation.

Since the release of "Ambience" in 2015, you’ve been deemed "one to watch," received major press coverage from the likes of The Guardian, Mixmag and FACT among others. How has your life changed? For the better? For the worse? Of course for the better. It's been pretty crazy, but I love it. There's times when you feel really tired with the travelling, but I wouldn't change it for the world. It’s been written that you have a deep reverence for Brazilian beats, transatlantic Hip-hop and classic house music, with all three being solid foundations within your musical repertoire. Do you recall the first time you heard music from these three inspirations? What were the songs and who were the artists? I think it was a gradual thing. When I was listening to early essential mixes by Eric Morillo, Carl Cox, etc...The tracks they were playing that caught my ear were always the big tribal house tracks. Through that I discovered producers like Danny Tenaglia, Kenny Dope, etc...I've just always been drawn to percussion driven music. What project to date—i.e. a milestone, an album, an event, a tour—are you most proud of and why? I think my new Defected In The House compilation. I put a lot of time and effort into it, just getting the tracks right, producing new exclusive tracks etc...So, I can't wait for people to hear it. Tell us about your event series Club Bad. What is it and why is it important to you? I just wanted an event where I could invite DJs that I really liked and respected to have a fun party where people could come down and hear some great music. It really started as a place where myself and my friends could get together, but it's turning into something I'm really proud of. How did your latest release, “Defected Presents Melé In The House” come about and what can fans expect to hear?

I wanted it to represent me as a DJ first and foremost. I've always been quite eclectic, so having The Stone Roses and Primal Scream next to Luciano and the Martinez Brothers, for example, was really important to me. I also produced some new and exclsuive tracks which really tie the mix together. Tell us about the methods used in determining which tracks to include on “In The House and did you have personal conflicts regarding your choices? I had a few hundred tracks in the initial pool of music to choose from. I can be quite indecisive, so it was quite difficult for the first few months. Both CDs completely changed a few times. It's easy to over complicate things when creating a mix, but I think I got the balance really well. In your opinion, what makes a mix compilation successful or not? Is it the choices of musical selections, technical skills, audience participation and enthusiasm? Something else? I think it's all about just representing yourself as a DJ and staying true to your style and the music you really like. That is what's going to stand the test of time. Great selection and placement Is always the most important thing to me when putting a mix together. How is the rest of 2018 shaping up for you and what are you most looking forward to? Busy! I'm going to be launching a label at some point, putting more music out and just continuing to tour. Where do you see yourself in 2019? Are there plans for more music releases and more high profile performance opportunities? Definitley, this year has always been about taking it to the next level for me. So, 2019 will be more of the same. If there was one thing on your career journey that you could go back in time and re-do, what would that be? Why? I think probably the first year that I started playing at festivals. It was so new to me and something that I always wanted to do my whole life. I still get a huge buzz out playing festivals and clubs. It's the best thing in the world.

NEW RELEASE
SIDEBAR
Describing working on the mixes as "like putting together a really hard jigsaw puzzle." Melé’s In The House was mixed live, charting his obsession with deconstructing tracks and echoing his DJing technique using three or four decks, looping percussion and piano parts over each other for a uniquely layered effect. The mix draws on almost 25 years of house music, focussing on the Latin, tribal and percussive, along with a couple of slick curveballs. Also in the mix are three exclusive productions from Melé himself plus "Dancing Mist" from Joe Corti, an up-and-comer from the UK. Following epic rolling house moments from David Mayer's "Movement," Jimpster's "Step By Step" and the jacking wonkiness of Joeski's "Acid Disco" to kick things off, approaching the end of Mix 1 comes a bombshell moment in the form of The Stone Roses' "Fools Gold," a regular pinnacle of Melé’s explosive sets and an elevating moment within the mix. Finally for Mix 1 is a standout brand new release from Melé himself. With live percussion from drum warrior Shovell, the cover of "Pasilda" pumps up the track’s unmistakeable rhythms and piano melody with an irresistibly hefty bassline and vocal loops. A long-time highlight of Melé’s sets but until now unreleased, "Pasilda" is an exclusive and suitably high-octane ending to part one of the compilation. Part two of "Melé In The House" kicks off with the explosive Armand Van Helden production "Loves Ecstasy" (Peak Hour Mix) bringing the carnival vibes, matched with its energy by another exclusive new Melé production. The aptly named "Brooklyn Bounce" is Melé’s ode to Danny Tenaglia, a key influence whose sought-after percussive spirit is apparent throughout the whole mix. A sophisticated pumping house cut with plenty of signature layered percussion, Mix 2 continues to build into the final Melé production "Tribal Harmonix," the darker, more melodic and tech-inclined of the three. Primal Scream’s "Don’t Fight It, Feel It (Scat Mix)" provides another curveball moment that has played a key role in Melé’s sets for a hot minute, while further highlights include Romanthony's "Bring U Up" (Jasper James Remix), Seven Davis Jr.'s "Friends’ (Eats Everything Rework)" and Apollo 440's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Dub (Armand van Helden Snake Style Remix)" showing Melé’s acute knack for a club-storming direction. With his "In The House" contribution, Melé shows his passion for dismantling seriously heavyweight house, engineering these mixes with impressive flair, taste, and plenty of percussive flavor. Insanely Peachy Over
Kristin Velvet is one the most exciting up-and-coming music talents busting out of the Berlin Electronic music scene. When she's not wearing the “administrator hat” running Arms & Legs Records with Daniel Steinberg and Nils Ohrmann, she's releasing killer new music projects and hitting the international club and festival circuits. Velvet is also becoming a tour de force known for rocking her broad musical tastes behind the decks, feeding off the vibes generated by her energetic mixes and selections.
We catch Kristin in a moment when her recent releases "Cats Love Velvet" with Felix da Housecat, "Insane" and "Peach" are creating quite the buzz. In the interview, she elaborates on the Pros and Cons of being on the administrative and promotional side of the business, who she has her eyes and ears on, how she spends her free time (go ahead and take a guess what that may be), and her favorite decade of music.

How’s the new "Insane" EP doing? Are you getting good press and good response from your fan base? And "Peach," what’s happening with that one? The response has been super encouraging. One Berlin techno legend told me that "Peach" took him back to his E-Werk days. E-Werk was a 90s Berlin clubbing institution long before Berghain.I was pretty chuffed to hear that.
The positive press is nice too, but I’m mainly concerned how they work in the club, it’s been unreal watching people’s reactions on the dancefloor when I play these songs. That’s what makes me really happy. You’ve recently announced through social media that you’ve teamed up and collaborated with one of your idols, Felix Da Housecat. Is this a project long pursued? How did it

is no "typical day" but my creative process is a constant back and forth between the dancefloor, the studio and the DJ booth. As soon as I finish a track, if I don’t play it at the first opportunity, I know it’s not good enough… if I’m not hot to play it why would anyone else be.
Without a doubt my inspiration comes from the club. If I’m not playing, I’m raving! There

Our first EP "Cats Love Velvet" will be out via Arms & Legs, the label I run together with Daniel Steinberg & Nils Ohrmann on August 17th. Then we have another track "Uneducated Thief" coming out via Felix’s label Founders of Filth on September 7th. It's so dope that a legendary artist like Felix is up for collaborating and shining his light on someone relatively unknown like
That’s what makes me really happy." skills, knowledge and experiences enhanced your career as a producer and DJ? Pros? Cons? Pros – The skills I learned as a label manager and promoter have enabled me to be really independent as an artist; as with many producer/DJs, I have a label home and still do my own parties, so I don’t rely on others to make things happen. I can just do it myself. Cons – Although necessary, all the admin
around releasing and promoting music takes up a huge amount of headspace and precious time away from the studio. The ideal scenario is to have a full team - manager, agent, PR agent, social media manager and label manager, so you can just focus on the music. What a dream! Tell us about Arms & Legs Records and your role with the Berlin based label. Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14 | 87
88 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14
Arms & Legs is a house and techno label founded by Daniel Steinberg & Nils Ohrmann in 2011. I was initially just releasing with the label and helping Daniel & Nils out on the side, but then came onboard in a more official capacity around 2014. It’s primarily a platform for us to release our own music but we’ve also featured releases and remixes from artists like Nick Holder, 808 State, Paul Johnson, Oliver Dollar, DJ W!LD and Crazy P. In your opinion, who are the most exciting male and female DJs/producers on the scene today? Why? Without a doubt it’s Harry Axt, the techno alias of Daniel Steinberg. Everything he’s producing right now is completely on point, absolutely timeless and class tunes; he’s a huge inspiration. Also the super talented Vonda7 is about to launch her own label called art/werk. I just had a listen to the first EP, which is sounding excellent. Describe the similarities and differences between the electronic music scenes in your homeland Australia, Tokyo and Berlin? Do you prefer one over another? It’s been over 10 years since I lived in Tokyo, so I can’t really comment or make comparisons there. I’d say the main difference between Australia and Berlin comes down to the size of the scene. In Australia, you’ve got a pretty small electronic music audience and a very limited number of venues and promoters, which makes it very cozy. By comparison, in Berlin there are apparently something like 300 clubs. Most of which are open 5 nights a week with no official closing time. There’s also a constant stream of techno tourists who bring their fresh excitement and energy each week. I quite enjoy this transient nature of Berlin, it means it never gets too scene-y or stale. Or maybe it does in certain circles, but I haven’t noticed. When you are not on the road, in the studio, or in the office, how do you spend your free time? I go clubbing. I must dance! What is your favorite era of dance music, the ‘70s, ’80 or ‘90s? Why? Who were your favorites from the period? The 90s. What a great decade for music! Favorites of this period were Joey Beltram, Speedy J, Underworld, Armand Van Helden, 2 Unlimited, Black Box, La Bouche, Planet Soul, Baby D, Moby, The Bucketheads, Snap!, Technotronic, Daft Punk, Bizarre Inc, Robin S, Crystal Waters, Dee-Lite, Cece Peniston with a special mention to TLC. Why? The great hooks and the emotion! Tell us something most people do not know about you? I have no secrets left. Too many after parties talking rubbish.

Written & Interviewed
Daniel Litman and Paige Lopynski are the duo known as BONNIE X CLYDE. Both Spotify and Apple Music has tapped them as an act to watch out for 2018. The reasons for this acknowledgement are many, but mostly due to hard work, perseverance, the right connections and kicking out choice cuts that consistently premiere on popular play-lists like Crate Diggers, Fresh Electronic, New Music Friday, Best of the Week and A-List Dance. Since embarking on their professional career in 2016, Daniel and Paige have released 2 EPS, the most recent being “While We’re Young” and 10 singles with the stomper "Bass Jam" reigning at #1 on Spotify for seven weeks. Positioning themselves for a monumental year in 2018, and being highly driven to taking over new markets, adding more people their fan base —“The Rosegang” and exceeding expecatations, Dan and Paige open up about how they intend to keep the momentum going, achieving their early and ongoing success, working with major label Interscope and Insomniac Records, Popup concepts and the international fan club known as the “Rosegang.”
Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14 | 91
In one sentence, sum up what the extraordinary and rapid rise of Bonnie X Clyde means to you. Being able to create, perform, and share our music with the world is a beautiful gift that we are forever grateful for. It means that people are actually listening to our music and we hope to inspire others through our music and movement to follow their passions as well. In 3 years time, you’ve busted the out of local club and party scenes in Washington DC and Miami to become a hot commodity on the international festival and club circuit, multiple hit records, and a deal with major label Interscope Records. Did you imagine the level of success you are now enjoying in such a short period of time? What do you attribute the successes to? We both are the type of people that do everything we can to achieve something we want. At the beginning of our project, we promised each other that when we had a goal, we would do everything in our power to attack that goal. So, we definitely imagined the level of success and hope to just keep building on it. We attribute our successes to our management team, us as individuals working hard day in and day out whether its in the studio or on tour performing/ networking and to our parents for raising us to be hard working strong individuals. If it weren’t for all these things working together, we wouldn’t be where we are. Your new five song EP "While We’re Young" was recently released through Interscope Records. Did the two singles —"The Unknown" (released in May) and "Do It All Over" (released in June)— build the radio and stream buzz you were looking for leading up to the EP’s release date? How so? We didn’t sign our recent “While We’re Young” EP with Interscope Records. That was our first "WANTED" EP. Our "While We’re Young" EP is actually COMPLETELY independent. The "Unknown" and "Do It All Over" were the perfect two songs to prepare our audience for our new EP which has a very clear pop-edm crossover. In a recent interview with another media outlet, you describe tracks on the new EP as a reflection of life’s routines, memories, experiences, self-belief and trust. What is the ultimate message that you want listeners to take away from the new songs? What do expect in regards to crowd acceptance and engagement when the songs are performed live? What feelings comes to your mind? To follow their passion, live in the moment, and not be afraid to take chances. When the songs are performed, we expect there to be more "sing along" experiences than ever before. Feelings of nostaligia and happiness should come to mind in every song. How has working with Interscope Records and Insomniac elevated your profiles as DJs and as music producers? Has it opened doors to future projects? Working with Insomniac has done so much to help us. They have given us the opportunity to perform in front of large crowds at the beginning of our career, opening us up to new areas and new audiences all over the world. They opened the door with Interscope and helped our EP do as well as it did! Which tremendously helped our career.

It’s out there that you both had a hand in creating the identity of rising bass music DJ and producer Nitti Gritti. How did your paths cross and re-live that moment for us. We both started our careers in Miami where we both connected with our now manager Paul Campbell. We played shows in Miami together and our great friends. One day hanging out in the studio, Bonnie came up with the name Nitti Gritti and he ran with it. Aside from his name, Nitti Gritti has created his own identity for his name through his media and his really awesome bass driven music. He is a wonderful, extremely talented artist that inspires us everyday. Did your BXC Pop Up concept arise from your multiple impromptu house parties caused by Sunset Music Festival cancellation? Is there a particular model that you follow or is it more of a spur of the moment opportunity? Seems like there would have to be some planning involved, permits, etc…or is it more like an underground event spurred on by social media and the web per se? Yes! After we traveled around and played several pop up shows and a house party, we loved the impact it had on people and more and more people told us they wanted to experience it. Therefore, everytime we travel to a city and can make a house after party possible, we try and set it up! It currently is more of an underground, spur of the moment kind of thing to keep it exciting and to keep people wondering if it’ll go down or not. We have plans for future events that will be much more legit, but along the same carefree, house party vibe. Why is your fanbase known as “The Rosegang?” Who coined that phrase and what is its significance? At the beginning of our career as Bonnie X Clyde, Bonnie received roses at a show one night and instead of keeping the roses for herself, she decided to pass them out to the audience members throughout the show. After that night, through social media posts and online engagement, we noticed how positive the impact was when people were so excited to receive that rose. We then decided to continue doing it and it has become a staple to our brand and has created a very loving, loyal fanbase aka The Rosegang. What have been the high points of 2018 so far? Any low points? Creating the "While We’re Young" Ep and releasing it, getting lots of positive feedback and performing it live and hearing people sing it back to us. Performing at large festivals such as EDC Mexico and having our EP heard already by 1.3 million listeners on it’s second week since its release are also high points. There aren’t many low points, aside from traveling on airplanes and being away from our families for long periods of time. We tend to stay very motivated and positive on a regular basis setting a good example for our fans and friends. What does the rest of the year look like for you? More touring? Some more new music and collaborations? We will be releasing some collaborations ( we can’t currently name) and have more tour dates that will be announced very soon!

ctave One is the brainchild of core members Lenny and Lawrence Burden. Both Lenny and Lawrence are trained musicians, who took an early interest in DJing, programming and inventing their own sound equipment. Busting out of Detroit with their debut "I Believe" in
1990, the Burden brothers, over the years and under the guise of different aliases including: Octave One, Random Noise Generation, Never On Sunday and Metro D with Terrell Langston, have been and continue to be trailblazers across Techno and Electronic Music landscapes, as can be heard on dozens of recordings through their own imprint 430 West Records, as well as Tresor, Transmat, Low Spirit, and Concept Music. To our good fortune, we took an opportunity to interview Lenny and Lawrence, right in time and on the heels of their brand new release, "Endustry" and in between stops of a heavy tour schedule across Europe and beyond.

Octave One, Random Noise Generation and Never on Sunday are "stage names" that you have used over the years. Why the three different names? Well, the three different names represented are not just names, but also represent different ideas, moods and concepts. Sometimes we might feel a more aggressive style, maybe even utilizing samples that we twist and and mangle, that type of mood usually makes its way into the Random Noise Generation. Deeper melodic, smooth and possibly somewhat housey, falls into the chain of thought and vibe of Octave One. And just straight out experimental, and not necessarily dance floor, but thought provoking, makes its way under the Never On Sunday concept of thoughts. As creative musical minds and as brothers, what is
98 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14
it like in the studio making music as a team? Does sibling rivalry ever make an appearance during your creative processes? Do you have any "in the studio" stories to share? Well, a lot of people may not realize that there are actually five of us that create music from time to time under the Octave One monarchy, so the studio experience usually consists of more than just the two of us (Lawrence and Lenny). Being in the studio can be more interesting and fun, especially when things are happening right, but it can also be a rough way to go when you don’t seem to see things eye-to-eye. But we understand that we all have the same goal in mind and that is the success of the project as a whole and not so much our individual success. That’s one of the cool things about being in a band with your peeps, that we strive as a team! One "in the studio"
story that we like to share is that of our younger brothers Lance and Lorne. Literally, those guys grew up in the studio hearing and making music from an early age. They used to hang out on the floor underneath the mixing console as we banged out tunes! They would play with their toys and then when we would leave, they would start playing with the gear. They must have watched us really close too, because we never taught those guys how to work Protools, but they found their way around it quite well nonetheless. If we would have been Hip-hop producers or even RnB producers, we’re sure that their love would have been for those genres, but we’re glad that they developed an ear and passion for Techno. Speaking of brothers, what are your three other brothers: Lome; Lynell and Lance up to these
days? Are they working in the music industry or are they doing something entirely different? All three of our other brothers still produce music, but mainly just for fun and in their leisure. Lynell and Lance both are married with children, who surprisingly, also excel musically. They love to create on occasion, maybe not Techno, but as long as they enjoy whatever they like musically, we don’t care about the genre, its all good! And Lorne does work solely in the music industry with us and also producing Hip-hop and RnB with other producers. If you were "Pitchmen," how would you sell “Endustry” to someone that is not familiar with your history and discography? Shhh…just listen.
...THIS PROJECT 'ENDUSTRY' SEEMS TO BRING ALL THE ROWDY, AGGRESSIVE PEOPLE TO THE FRONT OF EVERY SHOW. IT’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE PULSE ON THIS LATEST ALBUM THAT HAVE PEOPLE REALLY IN THE GROOVE AND PUMPING THOSE FISTS WITH THEIR HANDS IN THE AIR… WE LOVE IT!
Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14 | 99
Among the 7 tracks featured on the new album, which song would you say resonates the most with the crowds during your recent string of dates? What was the energy and response like? "Alkalyze," has to be one of the crowd favorites. The crowds really get caught up in the synth lines and aggressive revolving drums. We love to see the floor swell from this tune…str8 fire!!! For a year now, you’ve been traveling and performing all over Europe with a couple stops in the U.S. If you look back at all those performances, do any stand out as "monumental moments" that remain fresh in your memory? Yeah, our touring schedule can be pretty intense for a live band performing, but honestly it has been a blast hitting the cities, states and countries we’ve been touring in and around. All of our fans have been amazing, as always, but this project "Endustry" seems to bring all the rowdy, aggressive people to the front of every show. It’s something about the pulse on this latest album that have people really in the groove and pumping those fists with their hands in the air…we love it! Representing the 2nd Generation of Techno out of Detroit, and trend setters in your own right, do you feel there is a certain amount of responsibility and pressure placed on you to continue creating music that is forward thinking, progressively fresh and yet completely independent and unique to current and past incarnations? It might seem a bit hardcore to some, but no, we don’t feel a certain responsibility and/or pressure to create music a certain way. When we entered into the creation of "Endustry" our goal was to produce a release that we needed for ourselves, so there was no pressure to fit into any kind of mode. And guess what? We’ve always kept that approach to our thinking creatively, but our saying has
CM 100 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14
always been to speak when you have something truly to say, musically. We don’t really care about trends, although like anyone, we can be influenced by certain things musically, but we don’t set out to follow anything but our creative spirit. That’s what this music has always been about for us and that’s our relationship to it. Being Detroit ex-residents, what has you most excited coming out of your local Techno and Electronic Music scenes? We haven’t lived in Detroit for over 10 years now, but in our hearts and minds Detroit will forever be our hometown and instilled into the very fabric and musically DNA of who we are. So, to answer your question, unfortunately we don’t have a bead on the local Detroit market as to what is coming up new. But surely the scene is, and will always be, exciting and amazing, so expect something special coming round the corner. We will wait with anticipation with you! What do you have planned for the rest of 2018? More tour dates in the U.S.A and abroad? Relaxation? Perhaps a well deserved vacation? Well, yeah, we do have quite a few shows left hitting the schedule for 2018 here in the States and abroad, so we know we’ll be performing, performing and performing for many dates to come. But while we’re in the midst of all of this jamming out live, we’re also in the studio creating new material for an long overdue project under our "Never On Sunday" banner. It’s quite a departure from our usual dance floor bangers because we really wanted to challenge ourselves to do something out of our comfort zone and see how it would turn out. So, we guess you can kind of say that we are getting some relaxation of sorts, just beyond our 4-to-thefloor bits. Then maybe, just maybe, we’ll sneak in a brief, well deserved and overdue vacation when its all completed!
...OUR SAYING HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO SPEAK WHEN YOU HAVE SOMETHING TRULY TO SAY, MUSICALLY.

Obscurity? NO LONGER! The Ascension of a Mega-Producer
also known as Chris Knight has ascended from obscurity by shaking up the dance music industry with multiple "big room" and fire powered releases on Axtone, Size Records, Spinnin’ and Subliminal. Remarkably, he’s achieved his mega producer status by impressing and gaining major support from the likes of Pete Tong, Fat Boy Slim, Steve Angello, Axwell, Bob Sinclair, Erick Morillo and Basement Jaxx. Recent high profile projects include an international headlining tour, collaborating with Erick Morillo, composing the 2017 "Sensation Chile Anthem" and the launching of his Kryteria Records with his debut single with Steve Angello. In this feature interview, you get an up close and personal look at Kryder’s visions for Kryteria Records and Kryteria Radio, how he finds his balance while touring, his Swedish House Mafia connection and a few more intriguing nuggets.

"I’VE ALWAYS LOVED BEING INVOLVED IN THE SCENE. I’VE MET SO MANY G AND I THINK THAT HAS HAD A MASSIVE IMPACT ON MY CAREER. TO BE ABL HAS REALLY HELPED MY CAREER AND GAVE ME OPPORTUNITIES I DON’T TH Will the launching your new label Kryteria Records with the Steve Angello collaboration “Romani” single define the direction that Kryteria Records will undergo with future releases? I think it will give a good idea of the kind of path the label wants to take. I am always open to new music and love different sounds, as long as the music is unique and innovative. That’s the main thing for me. I have developed a sound over the years, so the label will push that forward. Can you share with us what’s next in the release schedule for Kryteria Records? How many projects do you plan to release and how will you go about growing the label’s artist roster moving forward? I have a track dropping soon called "La Cumbiambera" with Cato Anaya, a hugely talented Colombian producer, which I am really looking forward to people hearing. I am always

on the lookout for new music and the next steps, so beyond that, I already have music in the pipeline ready to drop at the right moment. With Kryteria Records being positioned as a brand extension of your syndicated Kryteria Radio show and in partnership with Spinnin’ Records, tell us about the path forward and how working with Spinnin’ equates to success for your newly launched label? I think first and foremost, the music speaks volumes. Regardless of the team behind it, the music has to be right, so that was important for me to take my time to ensure that that was spot on and how I envisioned the label moving forward. I have had a lot of success with the Kryteria radio show and gained a loyal following, so the label was the logical next step. Obviously working with Spinnin’ is a great move, to have their backing and access to the network they have is a solid start and enables me to get my
GREAT PEOPLE AND TALENTED ARTISTS THROUGH JUST BEING AT PARTIES LE TO FORGE THESE RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH A COMMON CONNECTION HINK I WOULD HAVE HAD IF I HADN’T PUT MYSELF IN THOSE SITUATIONS. " music in the right hands right from the start. Speaking of your radio show, you’ve managed to gain a large listening base and land syndication on more than 100 FM stations across the globe. How did that develop and what is the concept behind the programming for show? I launched the radio station with the idea of building a community and showcasing the new music I have to my fans and build on it from there. I chose to go weekly as I am touring so heavily. I always have new music, from myself, established artists and new artists alike, so I thought it was important to share that with my fans on a weekly basis. By having it so consistent, it helped to build a network of fans who return every week to listen to the new music. I broadcast live on Facebook, which enables me to interact in real time with fans and provide an engaging platform which is really well received.
Your 2018 Summer Tour took you to Asia, the U.S. and several countries across Europe. Which stop was your favorite and why? Being honest with you, I couldn’t choose. I like to experience different culture, and that is one of my favorite aspects of getting to tour the world. Each stop is different, different people, different setting, different vibe, so I feel really grateful to soak up all the different ways of life. The U.S. has always been hugely supportive of my music. How do you mentally and physically prepare yourself for a vigorous tour schedule? I think it’s very important to try and maintain some balance in life and also as much routine as is possible. This can be difficult with so much travelling, performing at different times and in different locations as every day is different, but if you try and stick with the things you can control – a healthy diet, daily routines and trying to get as much sleep as you can, then that makes it a lot Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14 | 105
easier. Being on tour for long periods of time also means you are away from loved ones, which can be hard, so I try and keep in touch via video call and messages as often as possible to make that easier. Here’s an obvious question for you now. Naturally, one can dream up all kinds of scenarios of what a reunited Swedish House Mafia tour would look like. Seeing that your label’s first release "Romani" features Steve Angello, were there any discussions regarding special appearances, should SHM hit the road? It feels like a perfect fit and it would obviously give the new track a tremendous reach and shelf life. Do you have anything to share? The guys have always been really supportive of me as an artist and my music. They often play my releases and it’s been great to build that relationships through Axtone shows and other events they are involved in. I would love to be involved in their reunion. In the years you’ve been producing music, it really is impressive how you were able to gain high profile remix projects with many of the world’s internationally known DJs. What was/ were the trick(s) you employed to get these "right out the gate?" Was it being around influential people? Being in "the right place, right time" scenario as the saying goes? Something else? I’ve always loved being involved in the scene. I’ve met so many great people and talented artists at parties and I think that has had a massive impact on my career. To be able to forge these relationships through a common connection has really helped my career and gave me opportunities I don’t think
106 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14
I would have had if I hadn’t put myself in those situations. One defining moment of your career is your 2013 track "Aphrodite" on Axtone Records. Reaching the number one position on Beatport’s Top 100 must have opened doors to future projects. And not to forget another #1 Beatport Top 100 release, a remix of Kölsch featuring Troels Abrahamsen "All That Matters." With these two number ones, how did it feel when the proverbial flood gates opened with proposals to work on projects for Nicky Romero & Krewella, Armin van Buuren and David Guetta, among several other big names? Obviously, it has resulted as a positive impact on the trajectory of your career. Would you agree? Of course! Having the success on Beatport back then was really a yardstick for producers, and opened up a lot of doors for me in regards to future projects. I’ve been producing a long time and as I have achieved each accolade, it has exposed me to other opportunities which I’m very grateful for. And lastly, what are you most looking forward to, personally and professionally, within the next twelve months? The thing I am most looking forward to in the next 12 months is pushing forward with Kryteria. The radio show has built a solid foundation and framework to work with and the response from fans for the first release has been insane. I have lots of plans in the pipeline, plenty of releases lined up and other aspects such as label showcases, merchandise etc… which I can’t wait to share with you, watch this space!

[MUSIC REVIEWS] Masterpiece Excellent Good Fair Poor
THOMAS FEHLMANN
Los Lagos Kompakt
Thomas Fehlmann was born 1957 in Zürich, Switzerland. At age 22 in 1979, he founded the avant garde band Palais Schaumburg together with Holger Hiller. In the late 80s he teamed up with Dr. Alex Paterson and KLF’s Jimmy Cauty to form the seminal act The Orb. In the 90s he was a resident at the legendary Tresor Berlin. After Palais Shaumberg split in1985, he dedicated himself to his home studio and the sampler, releasing records as Ready Made. In 1988 he founded the Teutonic Beats label, whose compilations featured early contributions from artists like Jörg Burger, Wolfgang Voigt, Moritz von Oswald, Sun Electric and Westbam.

[REVIEWS: ALBUMS] Together with Moritz von Oswald and Juan Atkins he formed 3MB, helping to cement the Berlin-Detroit connection. Since 1995 he has been involved with the Berlin based Ocean Club, which has been broadcasting a radio show since 1998 that now has a worldwide audience, has been responsible for countless remixes and productions for a eclectic selection of artists ranging from Erasure to Einstürzende Neubauten. Fehlmann soon became friends with Dr. Alex Paterson of The Orb and as their friendship grew, Fehlmann was invited to contribute to many Orb releases, becoming a part-time member of the group. "Los Lagos" marks Thomas Fehlmann's seventh solo full-length album, and his 4th for Kompakt. This new collection of songs is a a follow up to his Berlin inspired 2010 full-length LP "Gute Luft." In the Thomas' own words it's about "checking the juice." Establishing a picture of his current artistic condition, as suggested by the title Los Lagos/die lage/the situation, it also translates to "the lakes," but taking the meaning of "wassup" in the context of a relaxed discussion between friends. The new album refers to Fehlmann's musical motivation, dreams and wishes through the language of music exclusively—"a way to allow myself to techno" he says, "to techno as a means to deconstruct and rebuild again. Set up an area of tension, loose it in the flow of the grooves. Magnifying some detail out of proportion, regroup around that and slowly knit a texture. Expand. It was time to take a bend and head where the sun rises or sets, wherever my heart drives me." This is pretty much the kind of decision Thomas Fehlmann has made. 61 and shining, longstanding member of The Orb, multitalented composer and boundless experimentalist, had to make in the twilight of his collaboration with Alex Paterson, eager to taste the flavours of the unknown on his own again. "It was the moment
122 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 14
when flexibility would have become compromise". Far from being the demise of their joint dream, this was bound to split it in two distinct, parallel fantasies— rich of their own singularity. "Los Lagos" connects Art, disco, minimalism, jazz and funk. As he likes to say, Fehlmann's head functions as a sampler, capturing elements and re-assembling them under his own embracing perspective. It becomes quite apparent that he is not afraid to leap from a deep, dubbed-out hypnotism and with one listen to the tracks "Window," "Morrislouis" and “Freiluft,” you will understand where he is coming from. Mixing it up with the playfulness of 90s style bleepy schaffel "Tempelhof" featuring Max Loderbauer to the muscle-flexing dancefloor cut of "Triggerism" and the serene calmness presented on "Geworden" shows Fehlmann is in his element. With "Los Lagos," Fehlmann focused on finding "the structure that's surprising, disturbing and rewarding" and he has succeeded. The artwork for the record, courtesy of contemporary artist and friend Albert Oehlen whom he shares lots of artistic ambitions with, echoes the producer's funky use of shape and space, sludge and clarity like a second skin. In need to keep his inner balance in check, Fehlmann committed himself to switch off the control and follow his intuition, which isn't so much of an easy process as he also wanted to incorporate the side disturbances experienced: "it's a complex process of search and destroy to bring out a new beauty trying to expand my vocabulary." With "Los Lagos," Fehlmann looked at finding the structure that's surprising, disturbing and rewarding. A search for light and harmony that Fehlmann sums up eloquently: Does your inner musical voice respond? That is the question. Then doors open up in unexpected corners, rays of light appear; you follow through and you're in - in your oasis.

ARNAUD LE TEXIER GRANULAR THERAPY CHILDERN OF TOMORROW
Techno label Children of Tomorrow will soon celebrate 10 years of producing, releasing and growing its impressive roster to include names like Terrence Dixon, Zadig, Tensal, Antigone, Oscar Mulero, Jonas Kopp, Sauli Kemppi and Arnaud Le Texier. And speaking of Arnaud Le Texier, he’s been part of the Chidren of Tomorrow family since 2011. Arnaud is one of the true veterans of the London underground music scene, having been associated or playing at virtually every major techno party over the last decade. For years, Arnaud has kept himself at the very forefront of the scene, 30 years of DJ slinging and 20 years of signing, developing and producing artists behind the scenes. Now, he’s finally releasing a full-length album of his own titled "Granular Therapy." For his first album, Arnaud tells a story and expresses his deep production processes through a myriad of different styles of Techno ranging from
the ambient and hypnotic to broken beat and raw Techno dressed up with subtle grooves, wondrous atmospheres and sonic textures. The album opens with "Dusk" and features ambient atmospheres, mid-tempo pacing, and sonic sounds. "Pattern 2" is an intriguing composition. The track is full of blip sounds, broken beats, pads and modular clicks. Next up is the album title cut "Granular Therapy," a deep techno track with modular bass line and melancholic pads. "Black Nympheas" brings in a darker and modern side of techno with simple beats, a grinding bass line and magic drones. "Blade Pass Frequency" features plenty of kick, acid styled bass lines, and otherworldly pads, building a powerfully deep Techno cut. Jazzy ambience, accompanied by dark atmospheric layering, is what you get on "Binary Sun Dawn." The track provides a calming effect just before transitioning to the minimal and mind bending "Mono Driver." "Snapper" brings the percussion, bells, and a grinding modular bass line leading in to the broken beats and dark atmospheres that is "Virgo Consortium." Mixing groovy broken beats and spacey and angelic ambient sounds, "Midi overdub" comes in as an absolute beauty. As the album comes to close, Arnaud drops in "Hideous Engine," a dance oriented track featuring bass and sonic pads. In epic fashion, "Dawn’s" ambience, created with drones, blip sounds and an acid bass line ends the album in pristine perfection. After decades of being entrenched in Djing and producing Techno from behind the boards, this first album, "Granular Therapy," by Arnaud Le Texier is a great debut. Chock full of different moods created by ambient atmospheric sounds, dance grooves, lots of pads, broken beats and modality communicates his story magnificently through this music. Look for it September 15, 2018.

BIRD PETERSON INFINITY MOLASSES TEENAGE RIOT RECORDS
You may know Bird Peterson under a different moniker—Drankenstein, which just happens to be a worldwide phenom and major contributor to the birth and evolution of Trap music. Incidently, Bird Peterson/Drankenstein is Andrew 'There Will Be Booty' Hoke and according to his Facebook biography, 'The Elegant Gentleman King of Hot Jams.' He’s rocked the decks with Tiësto, Wolfgang Gartner, The Bloody Beetroots, Chase & Status, Lil Wayne and Diplo, among many others and his original music can be found on leading labels such as Warner Brothers, Sony, Ed Banger, Mad Decent and most recently Teenage Riot. Recently nicknamed 'Wizard Of The Dance Scene,' Bird Peterson has a brand new record out. Titled "Infinity Molasses" (Teenage Riot), the LP lists 13 tracks of tribal, disco, electronica drum and bass, hip-hop, Reggae and Techno featuring special guest appearances from Protextor, Anastasia,

Astronautalis, Saxophone Robot, Shack, Bleubird and Jabrjaw. "Infinite Molasses" jumps off with "Disco Is The Devil." Protextor and Anastasia guest on this wild electro ride with hip-hop rhymes and island inspired vocals. Right from the get go, the song grabs your attention and really gets going when Protextor comes in and drops one of hell of a rap line that will get your head shaking. Absolute dope! "Big Festive Motherfucker" has brilliant intro looping vocal samples metamorphosing in to a mixture of slick late 70s inspired flavors and grooves. "Conflict Resolution," one of the three singles released prior to the drop of the LP, features Bleubird and Jabrjaw, spitting out 18+ lyrics, while drum and bass elements lay down the beats. "Love Shit" is simply glorious electro pop, ‘nuff said. "Floor Shaker" is just that, a thunderous floor shaker. Shack compliments the bouncy beats and syncopated blasts with his raw and suggestive lyrics on "Floor Shaker." Does he mean Rump Shaker? Yep. The next four tracks"Talk Less, Do More," "Heartache," "Coming To Terms With My Really Good Looks" and "Hold Out" keep the party going, which brings us to the wrapping up the LP. "The New Sexy National Anthem" drives you to movement with rapid drumbeats and funky horn samples and loops. "Erectile Dysfunction" features thumping beats, whirling and escalating electronics. Next up is "Drunks In Love." Laden with tight rhythmic grooves, pulsating drums, muted horns, electro piano and some vocals, make this track sparkle. Closing "Infinite Molasses" is "I Think You Know." It has darker layers of sound, heavier low-end drum kicks and evokes a sense of winding down in its mellow and melancholic melody. "Infinite Molasses" is a fantastic collection of songs from start to finish that will appeal to Bird Peterson’s fans of old and new. All you have to do is press play. Amazement will surely follow.

DAMIAN LAZARUS & THE ANCIENT MOONS HEART OF SKY CROSSTOWN REBELS
The follow up to 2015’s "Message From The Other Side," an album The Fader said is "a journey into techno’s dreamiest recesses” is out now. Released on July 20 through Lazarus’ label Crosstown Rebels and BMG, Damian Lazarus and the Ancient Moons’ "Heart of Sky" is an album that leans more towards alternative pop and club land rather than being created for techno purists. However, that does not mean Lazarus has abandoned his techno purists. I think fans of Damian’s previous works, will like this new direction. "Heart of Sky" was recorded at Lazarus’ Monastic Studios in Tuscany, Italy. The players joining Lazarus and making up the Ancient
Moons are London based singer Jesse Appiah, session musician Ben Chetwood, who also happens to be a medical doctor, and Heritage Orchestra’s Rob Gentry. Special guest vocalist Chela also makes an appearance on the track "Five Moons." This album was also self-produced by Lazarus with the writing contributions coming from the entire band. The music has exotic instrumentation, soulful vocals and an ambitious broad scope for the dance floor and your head. 80s vocals in the soul style, a touch of funk, obscure, unique and traditional Middle-eastern instrumentation and a big flair for the cinematic, all resonate throughout when it comes to the musical styles influencing the songs on the new album. There are several trippy moments with psychedelic guitars, cinematic strings, shuffling, pulsing and driving beats and some of the grooviest and exotic rhythms you’ve ever heard, on or off the dance floor. Of the 11 tracks on the album, these are the best, in my opinion: "Five Moons;" "Help Me Find A Way;" "Cancello" and "Tomorrow We Can Start Again." The diversity and styles range from the body moving exotic to heady psychedelics as well as being down-tempo and chill. Damian Lazarus, has for years, put forth a mysterious and magical persona and has a brilliant discography to match, including this new glowing addition, "Heart of Sky." His goal for this the album was to find a way to connect heart and soul to a positive, trippy, psychedelic sound. I say he has accomplished his mission.

DARLYN VLYS PRINCE IN THE RAIN (REMIXED) SINCOPAT
AFFKT’s Sincopat is one EDM label that places a high degree of emphasis on developing new songwriters, producers and DJs. France’s Darlyn Vlys happens to be one of those artists. His first exposure to electronic music stems from an education stay in Montpellier. Then taking off for Valencia, Spain a spike in his developmental timeline becomes evident as he starts making tech house music splashed with jazz and Latin percussion. Not too long thereafter, John Digweed, Maceo Plex, Sasha, Loco Dice, Dubfire and Monika Kruse were spinning his music creations. Darlyn is also a busy and respected producer. His credits can be found on projects for labels such as Get Physical, Suara Music, Kling Kong, and Terminal among others. Darlyn’s new release, "Prince in the Rain-
REMIXED" features AFFKT, Chaim, Lauer, Third Son, Mattia Pompeo, HearThuG, Marc DePulse, YEUZ, Mundo D. & Roglar, Northern Lite, RARI, Haptic, and Kid Bucle. Track one, "Sun In Hell" featuring the German band Northern Lite and remixed by AFFKT, has great beats, dark and low-end bass pulses, and atmospheric guitar licks. "Tears in Rain" with Kid Bucle and remixed by Marc DePulse gets a spacey re-imagination, complimented with bottomed out, slightly distorted bass, frantic keyboard work and soft atmospheric layers. Third Son’s remix of "Paradoxal" featuring RARI is a blend of techno beats and glorious dreamy and bright electronica above soft angelic vocals. Next up is "Surface" featuring Haptic. HearThuG steps up for the remix duties and gives you plenty of kicks drums and hi-hat cymbal beats, lots of bounce, overlapping submelodies, and some killer special electronic effects. Techno beats, thumping bass, syncopated keys and crashes, rule the day on YEUX’s take on "Mustang." Coming to the end, "Map to the Stars" remixed by Mattia Pompeo is a rolling track with reverb, echo and space on a sci-fi tip. Closing up the album, "Decadencia" comes in majestically with heavy kick drums, driving rhythms and gorgeous layers of electronic keyboard work. "Prince in the Rain-REMIXED" is an uplifting, diverse and dynamic soundtrack, transitioning back and forth from melodic house to indie dance to techno-disco and electronica, all the while keeping it engaging and interesting.

It’s a pretty safe bet, that over the course of the last twenty years, you’ve heard the music productions of David Forbes. Staying behind the scenes for decades and working with labels such as Subliminal, Vandit, Spinnin’, Coldharbour, Anjunabeats and many others, the elite producer has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience working across many different styles and genres. Well, his list of production credits and the labels and artists he is affiliated with certainly proves it. Producing hits for others, again for twenty years, one would say it is about time for Forbes to breakout on his own. For the last year, Forbe’s has been creating an album consisting of deep

electronic themes. Going in to the project, Forbes had a plan-not to get bogged down with writing dance songs with the intent to blow away the listener. This attitude appears to have given him the freedom to write what he wants and to express his compositions, naturally and unhindered. So now let’s get at it. The opening track "Celeste" comes in at just over nine and half minutes, so strap in. Five minutes soothing voice and repetitive synth lines evolve into quicker dance beats and brighter keyboard melodies and before you know it it’s back to the trancy and trippy intro. Epic! Next up is the whopping eleven-minute "Chaos Bowl." Like the title kind of implies, it has a touch of the orient, steady rhythms, trippy guitar effects and a brief line of spoken word. "Fairlights"comes in with brighter tones and happier sounds, soft angelic vocals and a real nice dance groove. Skipping down to around the halfway point is the track "Retrace" featuring Elidh Hadden. This is one stands out a bit more on the dance side. Hadden’s bright vocals sit on top of layers of great beats, keys and synths, The track also gets an edit –"Retrace Sunrise Edit" to close up the album. "123"—an instrumental in fine trance form, "Walking Over Fire" featuring vocalist Emma Gillespie, the stadium filling worthy "Colloseum," distorted and electronic sounds, vocal samples, hypnotic leanings on "Disillusioned" and "Stars" futuristic music feels takes you on a long enjoyable musical journey all the way to the end. In brief, the common used descriptions like "atmosphere," "ether," "mood" and "journey" are all represented and apply to songs such as "Rubix," "Monlith," "Conjour" and "Chimes," among others. There you have it. An unshackled body of exquisite work, in all its glory, and known as "Electronic Excursions."

JBDXR WAVE TALK SPRINGSTOFF
Jörn Bielfeldt aka JBXDR is an innovative electronic music producer and jazz drummer residing in Berlin, Germany. He’s also a graduate of the famed Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachussetts and has worked with some of the biggest music producers in the world, including Daniel Lanois, Neil Young, Belle and Sebastian, Teri Lyne Carrington, Diana Krall and Esperanza Spalding. Often compared to Shigeto, Teebs and Flying Lotus, JBXDR sources of inspiration can be traced back to the late J Dilla and Deantoni Parks—an avant-garde producer with credits including The Mars Volta, Bosnian Rainbows, Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group and Kudu. JBXDR is known for combining electronic sounds textures with improvised and provocative drum beats and percussion.
"Wave Talk" is a collection of 12 songs. By far, this album is unlike anything you’ve probably heard all year or perhaps ever. This innovative underground musician has infused his jazz and improvisational skills on each and every track. Crunchy beats, lots of fills, and vivid rhythmic patterns rising above the electronic sounds is what you can expect. It’s aggressive and progressive, yet there are moments where Jörn shows incredible touch and sensitivity, not to overcompensate the song with heavy drum and percussion. This is not an easy thing to accomplish, especially if you are a drummer. Once you hit the play button, you’ll be hearing music like no other. It mystifies, and amazes. Highlights include the album's opener "Mass Adoption/Direct Opposition" featuring beat-driven patterns, dark, deep, atmospheres and oriental sounds. "Refusal" demonstrates and showcases Jörn’s ability to write sophisticated chord progressions to compliment his precision drumming while keeping the track playful and somewhat loungy. "Single Slice Of Time" features great vocal samples, experimental percussive techniques and splices. "Accelerate Everything" is a bass heavy, heartbeat soaked, toe-tapping, synth rollercoaster ride underscored by JBXDR's innovative, yet always pleasing set of skills behind a drum kit. The saying goes "Wave Talk" is very colorful, precise in song construction and potent with high levels of energy illustrating JBXDR’s love, life and everything in between. For those looking for something different, exciting, and really on the electronic music underground’s cutting edge, this album is definitely one to check out.

KINOBE GOLDEN AGE NEW STATE MUSIC
Kinobe is a British music act. It was founded in west London in 1998 by childhood friends Mark Blackburn and Julius Waters. Blackburn departed in 2004, replaced by Dave Pemberton. Chuck Norman replaces Pemberton for their 2017 releases. Kinobe became world famous for their track "Slip Into Something More Comfortable," sampling Engelbert Humperdinck's "From Here to Eternity" during the late 90s/early 00's boom for chilled electronic music, alongside Lemon Jelly, Bonobo and Bent. The track was featured in a Kronenbourg beer commercial, watched by millions, played and danced to in countless clubs, as well as appearing on compilations including Café Del Mar. Kinobe followed up the success of the single with a series of albums that featured continued use of sampling and live instruments, while also
introducing guest vocalists. In May 2017, they released "The Firebird" EP. The title track was accompanied by a vintage skateboarding video, featuring legendary Seventies downhill speed champ, Guy 'Grundy' Spagnoli. These days, Julius Waters and Chuck Norman make up the current formation and sit right next to contemporaries Air, Groove Armada, Röyksopp and Zero 7. Now, with a new deal with New State Music, Kinobe are back with the announcement of their fifth full length album. "Golden Age" will be released worldwide on August 31 and come via a Double CD, Heavyweight Vinyl and of course, digital formats. Julius brought in Chuck Norman, a multiinstrumentalist, programmer and producer who’s credits include work with The Pet Shop Boys, Peter Gabriel and Robbie Williams. The album’s lead single "Little Words" conjures up thoughts of soul legend Donny Hathaway with a slice of too-slow-to disco that points towards the West Coast surf sound. Over three and half minutes longthe track has an irresitable and memorable hook and once it gets in you, it will not be forgotten. Elsewhere the Stephen Hague mixed "End Of The Road" is a huge gospel-tinged ballad destined to create waves at radio, "Skyhigh" is a gorgeously haunting sundowner, "Heartstring" is all cosmic soundtrack strings while "Sunray" is Kinobe at their very best, with its irresistible hooks and washes of melody. "Golden Age" is one of the most anticipated downtempo albums to be released this year; a thirteen-track soundscape of sparkling songs and idiosyncratic instrumentals that’s vintage Kinobe.

ALEX STEIN HOSTAGE TRONIC
BASTIAN BUX SOMIA SUARA MUSIC
For more than a decade, Alex Stein has been hard at work building a catalogue of high caliber releases on labels such as Suara Music, Sincopat, Senso Records and Hydroza, among others. Through study and trial and error methods, Stein has grown in to a very respected DJ and producer and he has the performance credentials to match, having played in Canada, South Africa, Australia, all over Europe and his home nation Brazil. Alex’s latest slice of techno goodness comes by way of Christian Smith’s label Tronic. Titled "Hostage," the EP features three tracks: "Hostage," "Blackbird" and "Catalyst" spanning over 22 plus minutes. The first two tracks "Hostage" and "Blackbird" deliver rolling beats, cringing high pitch sounds against dark undertones, builds distorted and intense crescendos and drops to very tightly grooved dance rhythms. "Catalyst" has all elements of the first two tracks, however, the brighter sounding melody is front and center.
Bastian Bux is a well known DJ and producer who’s body of work is full of deep textures, powerful harmonies, heavy beats and fat bass lines; where everything is assembled with soul and sensibility, with the mastery of a craftsman and surgeon's precision. Bastian returns to Suara Music with five new tracks written with Orwellian undertones and feeling. The EP, "Somia" was primarily inspired by global political environments, corruption, anxiety, and hope. "Somia" kicks off with "The Game"— a greasy slice of psychotic sounds, rhythms and beats and solidly sets the tone to the back story. The title track "Somia" follows, which ends up on the opposite side of the feeling spectrum, brighter, dancier and lighter. "Edenvale" features spoken word vocals from singer songwriter Hxnter amidst heavy driving beats and rhythms. Track four, "Glauben," is a masterful blending of house and minimal techno techniques and wrapping it all up, "Legal Impunity" shows Bastian flexing some diversity with some crafty electronica and downtempo.

CHESHIRE TAKE THE CAKE LOWTEMP
DR. FRESCH NO INTRODUCTION INSOMNIAC RECORDS
Cheshire burst on to the scene with his experimental dubstep, EP "Punk" back in 2008. The debut stirred up lots of hype as the EP sat on top of the charts for weeks. 3 years later he would release "The Funk’d Up EP." This release was a complete reversal in musical direction, heavy on the Glitch-hop tip and of course his trademark Latin Funk leanings. Staying true to the Glitch Hop style, last year he released a 10 track LP, "Smokescreens & Somersaults" on Westwood Records. With strong releases come the respect, admiration, and opportunities. And the latest opportunity was to record for Gramatic’s Lowtemp imprint. Cheshire once again delivers the goods on the new five-track EP "Take Some Cake." From open to close, you get plenty of funked-up, disco tinged Latin rhythms and beats with lots of improvised sax and harmonic horns. Shout out to singers Brittney Jayy and Megan Hamilton. Standout tracks include: ALL!
Discovered by Insomniac in 2013 and receiving its Discovery Project Award, along with previous recordings on OWSLA and Ministry of Sound, lay the foundations and represent the early beginnings of his "Future Ghetto" concoction. Now, comes the release of "No Introduction," a modern mix of hip-hop, rap, house and trap, coined as "Future Ghetto." DJ Fresch’s latest EP for Insomniac Records masterfully blends Hip-hop, Electro and cutting edge sounds changing between analog and digital formats. "No Introduction" shines a light on the darker side of DJ Fresch. Throughout the four new tracks, pulsating rhythms, repetitive melodies and beats are constructed, running wild and bold. Tracks 1 and 2 set the tones and textures and are equally great, but track 3, "Feedback" featuring Mina, and to put it in the simplest of terms, is dope! Mina’s chiseled yet smooth vocals are perfectly aligned with the sounds that DJ Fresch lays down. Best track on the EP IMO. —LEO WEAVER

MEAUX GREEN ATLAS SHRUGGED CIRCUS RECORDS
Eli Noble and Jennifer Skillman, also known as Eli & Fur started out as teenage songwriters, writing lyrics for some of the biggest names in pop music. "Night Blooming Jasmine" features four tracks: "Night Blooming Jasmine;" "Something Was Real;" "Parfume" and "Honest." The new EP, released on Anjunadeep is a most welcome return to their early days as songwriters and storytellers. The title track, a nod to Los Angeles, features an infectious vocal hook and a crisp percussive groove. Contemplative words, slower paced melodies and intense bass rule on "Something Was Real." Eli & Fur draw upon their trademark club sound on "Parfume," with delicate vocals, low-end layers, thumping kick drums, and closes with delightful melodies on "Honest."
Meaux Green’s contributions in dance music are incontrovertible. NORMAN WEBER DEEP VISION CACAO
PHLEGMATIC DOGS NO CATS NIGHT BASS
Norman Weber, one half of Luna City Express, has stepped out on his own with an exotic and upbeat EP titled "Deep Vision." For the project, Weber features Ken on the title track with Mathias Kaden and Aaaron handling the remixes. Deep house and tech house shine bright on "Deep Vision" featuring dreamy and melodic synths, lush vocals and killer groovy beats. The remix by Aaaron goes in the minimal direction with expertise use of pads and energetic pacing. Mathias Kaden’s take on the track is a bit more moody and darker in texture and rhythm. "U.F.O.," the EP’s second song, hypnotizes with trippy distorted vocals, loops, swirling synths showing a different side to Weber’s creative side. As the official Press Release states: "Powerful, yet deeply harmonious, this EP creates an environment in which the groove moves fluidly, making it a perfect dance floor weapon. That’s exactly what you get with "Deep Vision!"
"No Cats," the new EP from Moscow’s Phlegmatic Dog’s may just be the crown jewel for AC Slater’s fledgling label Night Bass Records. "No Cats" follows the 2017 release of "Keepmastik," which appeared on over 130 playlists and was named a "Best of 2017"by Skrillex’s NEST HQ. "No Cats" sees the Phlegmatic Dogs return to Bass Night with lots of new twists on blending Bass music with house music. The EP opens with the heavy drum and bass leaning "Cuatrocats" featuring vocal samples that are placed with perfect precision and is "No Cats" finest moment. The 2nd track, "Bounce," gets deep, down and dirty with ominous bass and bouncy rhythmic patterns. If you were lucky enough to see the Phlegmatic Dogs on their recent U.S. tour, there’s no doubt you were left amazed and pumped up from their performances. For those that have not, check out the new music on "No Cats." It doesn’t disappoint.

ALEX RYAN CALA CONTA VANDIT
ATLIENS EXILE SELF RELEASED
Cala Comte is a picturesque slice of paradise on the island of Ibiza. The crystal clear, turquoise waters, small coves, and majestic views of the surrounding islands lays the inspiration for Alex Ryan’s latest single for Vandit titled, wait for it, “Cala Conta.” Alex Ryan is a Dublin, Ireland and Ibiza based Trance DJ, producer and promoter. Over the last ten years, Alex has been kicking out his A-list Trance music, throwing parties and performing side by side with today’s biggest Trance music makers. Back in the middle of July, the Dublin Trance DJ and producer delivered to Vandit Records the follow up track to the dancefloor stomper "Atlantis." The new track, "Cala Conta" has plenty of thumping kick drums, percussion, pads, grooving bass and ethereal electronics, all creating multi-layered melodies and rhythms that give you a feeling of sunshiny and breezy tropical beach days. "Cala Conta" is just not a song for daytime listening though,it is also primed for sweaty nightclub dance floors.
Earlier this year, Atlanta’s own ATLiens released a spectacular six track EP "Invasion." Full of heavy bass lines and futuristic sound design, "Invasion" set the stage for what was to come in the future. In June, just prior to embarking on a US tour, the duo released a new track-"Exile." For those familiar with ATLiens’ music, you can expect another heavy-duty dose of precisely organized electronic noise, wild effects, grinding rhythms, trademark vocal samples and incredible drops. Armed with apocalyptic overtones, "Exile" was made to "mark the second phase of ATLiens’ universal infiltration." ATLiens show us just how fearless they are in making wild and experimental electronic music with a slant toward Sci-fi. Listeners will feel the message, which is, in a sense, a feeling of being outside society and shut off from humanity. While this may be the case, each listener will most likely have different outlooks and attitudes towards the track. I for one, loved it.

COSMIC GATE YEAH! WAKE YOUR MIND RECORDS
EELKE KLEIJN PUNTA CANA DAYS LIKE NIGHTS
Cosmic Gate, titans in the Trance scene have had a pretty busy summer so far. Playing huge gigs at EDC Vegas, Ultra Europe, SAMF and bringing their sounds to nightclubs as well, but how did they find the time to get in to the studio to kick out a brand new song? No matter, we are certainly thankful. "Yeah!" opens with an epic tension rising intro leading to lots of reverb, sub melodies and beautiful harmonies. The track also has moments of euphoric atmosphere, layering and building dramatic drops and mid sections. I’ll say it. Nic and Bossi are on fire. "YEAH!" is triumphant and sterling addition to their existing repertoire. It's also a powerful testament to their incredible songwriting and technical skills. You’ll likely be hearing the song for the rest of the festival season, and most likely on the club circuit for that matter. Epic Cosmic Gate, folks.
Eelke Kleijin is a globally recognized Dutch producer and deep house music maker. Freshly off recent high profile appearances at Tomorrowland 2018, Burning Man, and stops in major market locales like NYC, Los Angeles, Houston, San Francisco and Mexico City, comes Kleijin’s latest release, "Punta Cana." Released through his imprint DAYS like NIGHTS, this latest track is the second single from his new forthcoming project named "Moments of Clarity." "Punta Cana" was conceived in 2016 while on a trip to the Dominican Republic. The song is built on prominent kick drums, percussion and bass, along with beautiful layers of hypnotic synthesizers and soft voice samples. The track is energetic, melodic and hypnotic—three universal pre-requisites for filling nightclub dance-floors everywhere. According to Kleijin, "Punta Cana" went through many incarnations during the creative process, always returning to one commonality, the main lead melody, which remained the constant by which to masterfully build on.

VCATION’s "Lay Low," is the debut single release from the songwriters behind Swedish House Mafia’s hits "Don’t You Worry" and "Save The World." They’ve also worked with Martin Garrix, Tiësto and David Guetta among other high profile acts. The guys behind the VCATION moniker, John Martin and Michel Zitron, are longtime friends and music making partners stretching back years. They’ve toured all over the world, and rumor has it, after having shared many shots of tequila, came to a decision to focus on happiness and doing what they want, musically speaking, as well as in life. "Lay Low," epitomizes that mindset—a “devil-maycare” attitude, which often goes hand in hand with vacation or holidays. The music is overflowing with a hip groovy pop instrumental melody accompanied by dreamy vocals. The song instantly puts you into a happy mindset, allowing you to put the world’s troubles aside and escape, if only for a moment.

Yotto is known for writing and producing compsoitions that blends dark and brooding atmospheres with light, uplifting eurphoria to melancholic melodies. On "Hear Me Out," Yotto constructs said such atmospheres, building a tension that increases as the song progresses with an awesome groove on top of his classic melody making, before taking it to the stratosphere with a dramatic vocal crescendo. "Hear Me Out" is an excellent prelude to what is coming in the very near future.
